MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com You can’t plan for everything, Toronto officials say, and the past year saw the city hit with weather more extreme than they thought possible. First, a July storm brought record rainfall, tore up river valleys and left 5,000 Etobicoke residents in the dark for two or three days. Then the December ice storm brought the city to a standstill, cut power for a million residents, and damaged or destroyed perhaps 20 per cent of Toronto’s trees. “You lived it,” City Manager Joe Pennachetti told people at a meeting Monday, May 12, at Scarborough Civic Centre. “No one could have dreamt we could have had such an ice storm.” Continuing tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Etobicoke Civic Centre on The West Mall, the meetings are meant to gather criticisms on how well the city reacted to any type of emergency, and suggestions for the future. Pennachetti said he wanted to hear specifics from everyone involved, including residents who use the city website and feedback form at www.toronto. ca/weatherprooftoronto >>>NEIGHBOURS, page 18

Federal byelection in Scarborough-Agincourt set for June 30 MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Federal Liberals in Scarborough-Agincourt chose their first new standard bearer in 25 years last Thursday, a lawyer and political aide named Arnold Chan. And it was just in time for him to start campaigning after a byelection for the open federal riding was called for June 30 over the weekend by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Chan bested rival Nikolaos (Nikos) Mantas at a nomination battle attended by 600
people at a McNicoll Avenue convention centre. Rival Liberals had been drumming up support in the riding since Jim Karygiannis, its MP since 1988, announced April 1 he had resigned to run for the city councillor’s position in Ward 39. Karygiannis supported Mantas, who had served as his constituency assistant and “right hand” in the riding, but Chan won. Emotions can sometimes run high in “a battle within the family,” Chan said on Friday, but added the 430 or so members who cast votes

replace him as the party’s candidate. “Until someone gets nominated, I’m not going to get involved,” he said. Karygiannis later endorsed Mantas, and in a letter to local Liberals, the former MP praised Mantas as a diligent worker and “the only candidate that lives in our riding.” “It’s a free country. I guess as an individual, I’m entitled to my opinion,” he said on Wednesday, adding he “stepped away” from the internal campaigning in the riding and “didn’t go out signing people” up to vote at the
Former MP Earlier, Chan said he will work hard to keep the riding Liberal. “I take nothing for granted in byelections.” The day he stepped down as MP, Karygiannis said he didn’t know who should
meeting. “Arnold was not a member of this riding until he decided to run.” Though living in Willowdale, Chan - who served as executive assistant to former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty and later as chief of staff to a Markham MPP, Michael Chan – said he spent nearly 20 years in the riding, and his parents and most of his extended family remain in Agincourt. “I still consider myself at heart a Scarborough boy.” Some Liberal hopefuls for the nomination had
already dropped out before Thursday’s vote. One, Muraly Srinarayanathas, invited supporters to open his campaign office Sunday on Kennedy Road, then sent them a message hours later saying he was withdrawing from the race. Local Conservatives nominated Trevor Ellis as their candidate on May 3. Federal New Democrats in the riding have not yet set a nomination date.

Look to us for your provincial election news A provincial election campaign comes and goes quickly. It will all be over on election day June 12. We thought we’d give you an idea of the preelection campaign coverage you can expect from The Scarborough Mirror. First, while we believe in democracy – and that political parties are necessary in a parliamentary democracy – we will always encourage candidates to represent their constituents first and their party second. With major questions such as economic issues and of course the transit puzzle, we’d like to see how courageous candidates are in accepting or denouncing a specific party’s platform if necessary to reflect the expressed view of constituents within a riding. In a city with such diverse transit needs, citizens in different our view neighbourhoods have different on transit priorities. Transit, health opinions We’re going to be eager to see provincial candidates baland OMB key how ance the needs of the people and issues for city the needs of their party leader. At The Mirror, we’re going to key our pre-planned coverage in coming weeks to three specific areas: transit, health care and whether Toronto should have special exemption from Ontario Municipal Board governance that, in practice, has a perception of delaying or preventing proper growth. During the final weeks of the campaign, you will see features comparing the platforms of key candidates in a riding. You’ll see longer feature stories explaining the issues and calling candidates to action. Our website has its place, too. The scarboroughmirror.com website and sub-sites specific to the provincial election will feature an archived view of everything written during the short campaign. It’s a good opportunity to reflect back at any time on discussions, platforms and on individual candidates. Value your vote. Take the time to quiz candidates when they come knocking on your door. Take time to study what’s been said during the campaign through our pages, our website and what you can imagine will be comprehensive live election night online coverage. There’s no shortage of provincial election issues in the neighbourhoods of Toronto. We want to be a guide for the ones that have a direct impact on your daily life. We welcome your issues and your views. We hope candidates listen when you speak through our pages.

The springtime weather is here, finally
T
he coldest, snowiest and longest winter we’ve had in these parts in quite some time delayed the onset of spring, but a gorgeous, sunny weekend finally got things back on schedule. Hurray! Cue the applause track. And for those so inclined, please feel free to do the Ickey Shuffle. Take your time, too. I’m not going anywhere. I’m sure glad the weather finally picked up. People have been downright grumpy around here since December. Hopefully this warming trend will get everyone to snap out of it. signs of spring Anyhow, to officially christen the belated season, I went out for a stroll through the neighbourhood and am delighted to announce that the usual signs of spring were everywhere.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Take the towers. They were all blooming as they do this time of year. What’s more, the newest varieties were sprouting higher than any of their predecessors. There were also buds on all the scaffoldings and perched above them were enormous cranes, which were of the whooping variety, as you might expect. Sigh. For those who love spring, if that scene doesn’t bring a tear to you eye you should pay a visit to the Wizard Oz and see if he can give you a new heart. And that’s just for starters, folks. The entire neighbourhood was coming to life visibly and audibly as it does this time of year. All the cafes were buzzing.
The patios were humming. The laptops were chirping. The tablets were tweeting. The phablets were warbling. The iPods were chiming in, too. I tell ya, it was a veritable symphony out there. And when the cellphones started streaming away like a flowing river, a gaggle of geeks waddled over to check out the action. If that doesn’t say springtime in Toronto, nothing does. flora and fauna absent Yep, no doubt about it, the warm weather had indeed officially arrived, alright. Sadly, there was one formerly familiar spring sight that was conspicuous by its absence during my walk: the once ubiquitous Flora and
Fauna. Ah, but not to worry. They’ll be back. Turns out the two longtime fixtures in the neighborhood were both stuck inside their townhouses suffering from their annual spring allergies to the usual culprits: the tow trucks, cement mixers and the orange cones popping up around seemingly every corner. But both Flora and Fauna promised they would be good to go by the holiday weekend and would join me for their belated initial spring jaunt on Victoria Day. I’ll be counting down the days. Feel free to tag along if you’re in the neighbourhood. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Setting rules for councillor-candidates
G
ood on Adam Vaughan for packing up his office. The former journalist and now former city councillor up and quit this past week, after the writ dropped on the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan will be running for the federal Liberals, to try and take the riding from the New Democratic Party following Olivia Chow’s departure to run for mayor. Leaving aside whether Vaughan is the best person to go to Ottawa for the riding of Trinity-Spadina, his decision regarding his seat has made for one of the best departures from city hall in recent memory. Unlike representatives at other levels of government, Toronto councillors and mayors are under no obligation to vacate their seats when they choose to run, mid-term, for MP or MPP. They can even, during the campaign period, continue to collect their full pay. If they lose, their old job is waiting for them.
david nickle the city Councillor-candidates don’t have a great record on resisting those perks. Raymond Cho, just now serving the residents of Scarborough-Rouge River while running for the provincial Progressive Conservatives, says he’ll be donating his councillor salary to charity for the length of the campaign, but is still collecting it. Long list Doug Holyday, the city’s former deputy mayor, did forgo his salary when he ran in last summer’s EtobicokeLakeshore byelection for the Progressive Conservatives, but he didn’t stop being a councillor until he won. Peter Milczyn came back to Toronto Council after having lost to Holyday, and is now getting ready to run again for the Liberals there. We could go on: Olivia
Chow, Brad Duguid, Judy Sgro, Michael Prue, Bas Balkissoon, Jack Layton... they all took advantage of a system allowing ambitious politicians to maintain both their base and safety net as they make the jump to federal and provincial politics. The question that Vaughan’s decision raises is: should the rules be changed? Federal and provincial representatives seem to get by fine with more severe restrictions on their ambitions. When Olivia Chow decided to run for mayor of Toronto, she quit her job in Ottawa, as did Jim Karygiannis, when he decided to run for a seat on council in ScarboroughAgincourt. That is something we should expect from any politician with ambitions. Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.

the mirror visits with the scarborough seniors slo-pitch league
our exclusive look
Celebrating 30 years on the diamond Scarborough Seniors Slo-pitch League has eight teams, more than 100 players
DAVID GROSSMAN scm@insidetoronto.com
K
en Harris feels the elation, perfects the emotion and has this contagious smile when asked about the day he belted his first home run. For the Scarborough native, dinger No. 1 in his life happened last summer at L’Amoreaux Park and just before his 80th birthday. Later in the season, he celebrated another milestone - his first league championship. Harris is part of a huge success story – the Scarborough Seniors Slopitch League. The league started 30 years ago at Thomson Park, and 81-year old Doug Duff – who is the only one to have played every year – said there were some reservations back in 1984 that the league may flop. “The sport was new back then and we weren’t so sure,” recalled Duff. “Our second year, we received a $1,000 grant from the Ontario government for equipment and then the league kept growing.” The Scarborough league has some stringent rules requiring that players can only be between the ages of
55 and 85 and must be able to run to first base without assistance. “This is our time in the spotlight, fun and camaraderie, win or lose there is no arguing and many of our wives show up for support,” said Harris, who plays every Tuesday and Thursday. As a teen, Harris had polio but was fortunate to avoid paralysis and remembers being quarantined at the age of 17. Fast forward and for the past 21 years, slo-pitch has taken over his life. His home run got him a congratulatory kiss from Shirley, his wife of 54 years. “I can’t explain how much I look forward to these games and the friendship,” he said. “I just go out and do my best, hope to get a hit and am thankful to be healthy enough to play.” Harris, who retired 16 years ago after four decades of working in various technical jobs for Consumers Gas, suffered a heart attack while playing hockey in his mid-60s. He had triple-by-pass surgery at Scarborough General six years ago and was medically given the green light to play. “As you get older, there’s more to do than going for a walk in the shopping mall,”

Above left, Tom Hague makes a catch during Scarborough Seniors Slo-pitch League action last week. Above right, Dean Metcalf hits during play at L’Amoreaux Park. Below left, league president Gord Holmes, left, and Carl Spencer, 93. Spencer was one of the founding players in the league back in 1984.
said Harris. “One day, I saw the guys playing, someone asked if I was interested in joining and haven’t looked back.” The organization has a defibrillator on site, people trained on how it works – but never has had to use it. Gord Holmes, president of the league the past five years, said players are not required to get medicals, but they must be able to run the bases. According to Holmes, there’s never a shortage of individuals – and Ken Massena, at 85, is the oldest active player. “It’s got to be in my genes and I enjoy the game – put those together and it keeps me going, “ said Massena, a Malvern Collegiate grad. “My legs aren’t what they used to be which is why I play catcher and avoid the running. I also don’t have to bend down.” Massena, now in his 21st
year in the Scarborough league, said he’s hoping to three-peat and become the first player to be on the team that claims the championship in three consecutive years. “We are at capacity, have 104 players, eight teams and even have guys on a waiting list,” added the 77-year old Holmes, who had open-heart surgery three years ago and also has a knee problem. “No reminders, the guys are out playing and having fun.” Despite a registration fee of $130, that goes towards the costs to play on the City of Toronto field, jersey, hat, equipment, lunches and a season-ending banquet, Holmes said he gets inquiries from people, who live outside of Scarborough, wanting to join. “Sadly we lose someone each year, but they are never forgotten as we
have plaques, trophies and always have a minute of silence to show our respect,” said Holmes, who is already working on the gala party at a banquet hall in October that will mark three decades of the league. As for Harris, who drives from his Bellamy and Lawrence area home 20 minutes from the park, he‘ll never forget that memorable in-the-park dinger. “I couldn’t believe that hit, and the ball rolling to the fence in right field,” recalled Harris. “I remember saying “this is going to be good”, thought positive and cleared the bases – my first home run and it was a feeling that I had never experienced before in my life.” Holmes said the league also has indoor training during the winter months and about 25 players attend.
Holmes is also responsible for co-ordinating a 16-team tournament, this year set for July 18 that is named in honor of 93-year old Carl Spencer one of the handful who helped form the league. The tourney attracts teams from across southern Ontario. “He’s terrific and one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet,” praised Holmes. Spencer, who is 93 and a Second World War veteran, hung up his cleats nine years ago but still has a sense of humour. “I really miss playing, but try to get to every game,” he said. “It’s nice to see that they’ve named a tournament after me – and I’m still around to enjoy it and watch everyone wearing a shirt with my name on it.”

transit seeks construction bids wMetrolinx Metrolinx is inviting bids for constructing a series of sound barriers along the GO Georgetown South rail corridor. A tendering notice was published online this week by the provincial transit planning agency, which is seeking contractors to install the walls plus security fences, as well as see to landscaping along the corridor between the Strachan Underpass and the Humber River Bridge. Earlier this year Metrolinx announced it was going ahead with a controversial plan to erect 10 kilometres of five-metrehigh noise walls at a cost of $20 million for design and building. The walls are intended to reduce noise and vibration from the Union-Pearson (UP) Express air rail link service currently under construction. Critics say the walls are not supported by the community and are intended to delay electrification of the
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT service, which will substantially increase the amount of diesel train traffic in the corridor when UP goes into service, scheduled for 2015. Weekend trips to Falls on GO wNiagara
For the first time this season, GO Transit will begin offering weekend trips to Niagara Falls and Barrie this holiday weekend. The service will launch as of Friday evening, May 16, with Niagara-bound trains departing Union Station at 6:20 p.m. and making five stops before reaching the Falls at approximately 8:24 p.m. The service continues into Victoria Day, with the final train for Toronto leaving Niagara Monday night at 10:30 p.m. A similar schedule is planned for the Barrie service. Following the holiday, the weekend service will resume in late June and run
throughout the summer. Visit www.gotransit.com closure updates wBloor-Danforth
More weekend Bloor-Danforth subway closures are planned as the TTC repairs subway track between Victoria Park and Kennedy Stations. The poor condition of the outdoor tracks between the stations has caused the TTC to restrict speeds of subway trains passing through until at least the end of June. The result for commuters has been longer than usual trips caused by the backing up of trains at opposite sides of Victoria Park. As it did last weekend, the TTC plans to close the subway on the weekend of May 24 between Woodbine and Kennedy stations so work crews can continue replacing the tracks, with another future closure planned for June. ACORN protests conditions at TCHC buildings in area MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com There’s no plan to tackle the long list of needed repairs in Toronto Community Housing Corporation buildings, which means tenants such as Kelly Lalande have been living with cracked walls, vermin and even holes in their elevator floor. “We are frustrated. We’ve not been heard,” Lalande said after she and some other members of the advocacy group ACORN Canada staged a noon-hour protest last week outside at the TCHC office in Greenwood Towers on Danforth Avenue. Provincial and city politicians alike “haven’t been holding their end up,” said Lalande, a spokesperson for ACORN in East York. “Some apartments don’t have hot water; some don’t have heat,” she added in an interview, accusing the city’s housing authority of treating
its tenants as second-class citizens. “We’ve living with bedbugs. We’ve living with roaches. We just have had enough of it.” For more than a decade now, there’s been a gap between the cost of repairs needed in the city buildings, most of which once belonged to the provincial government, and what the city is willing to spend on maintaining them. A city report in 2012 estimated the backlog at $751 million and said the TCHC, just to keep pace in caring for its aging buildings, would need to spend $150 million more on repairs each year from 2013 to 2017. The news prompted debates on whether to sell off the smaller, scattered TCHC properties to address part of the backlog with the proceeds; ACORN members want the problem treated as an important issue in both the municipal election and
B E AT T A TH E H E
the current provincial campaign. They note Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne served as the province’s housing minister, and that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford promised he’d improve the conditions at TCHC properties. Since TCHC boss Gene Jones was recently fired, members of ACORN have asked the authority’s interim CEO to meet with them in order to discuss what life is like in their buildings, said Lalande, who has lived in a TCHC apartment on Lumsden Avenue in East York for 15 years. ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) also wants landlords in Toronto, including TCHC, to be licensed by the city in order to compel them to do repairs.

Neighbours, churches, mosques offered shelter during ice storm >>>from page 1 “What exactly was the problem, and where can we get better?” On Monday, everybody seemed convinced the city needed to do a much better job of communicating with the public during the next Toronto emergency. “If you didn’t have power, you couldn’t see the news conferences,” said Brenda Mignardi of Scarborough, who wondered why the city didn’t use roving sound trucks or send employees door to door to reach residents after the ice storm, particularly seniors and people with disabilities. “You couldn’t call the (phone) lines because they’re all busy.” Others at the city forum thought TTC buses or library branches could have kept people warm. Several said the best source of help in disasters would be volunteers, perhaps organized through community groups
or a pre-arranged plan similar to what might have been used in the U.S. for civil defence. ‘tools’ “We don’t have these tools, and we should have these tools to have the community come together,” said Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, who said volunteer duties in emergencies could include directing traffic and checking on the elderly or people on dialysis. emergency kits Del Grande also suggested the city should buy home emergency kits and distribute them to residents at cost. Torontonians, including members of churches and mosques, did manage to shelter neighbours after the December storm. “It came down to the street level of neighbours helping neighbours,” said Ronn
Stevenson, who said more can be accomplished at the community level through a model called Creating Resilience for Extreme Weather (CREW). The city - which declared six extreme heat alerts in 2013 and 36 cold weather alerts over the winter - tries to learn from any emergency, including the 2008 Sunrise Propane explosion in North York, Pennachetti said, conceding extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. Some at the meeting, including John Riddell of the group East End Against Line 9 wanted Toronto to be ready for new emergencies, including pipeline damage during storms and a Lac-Megantictype rail disaster involving toxic fuel. Pennachetti said a report on the disaster preparation suggestions will go to Toronto council in July, shortly after another set of recommendations on Toronto Hydro’s handling on of the ice storm from an independent panel.

Greater Toronto Scouts host annual Haliburton Club Breakfast The 43rd annual Haliburton Club Breakfast set for next Thursday, May 22, in Toronto helps send young people to summer camp. Hosted by Scouts Canada Greater Toronto Council, this year’s breakfast takes place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the Canadian Room, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The breakfast helps to raise funds to provide safe, well-
maintained facilities for thousands of youth to enjoy at the Haliburton Scout Reserve, or at the Woodland Trails facility, which provide summer activities for Scouts. Included in these programs are canoeing, boating, fishing, orienteering and nature study at the 5,000-acre Haliburton Scout Reserve. Scouts Canada strives to prevent having any youth
turned away due to financial hardship. Thanks to funds raised at the breakfast, every Scouting youth has a chance to visit these camps where dreams and memories are made. Guest speaker at the breakfast will be Brian Price, Olympic gold medal winner in 2008 as coxswain of the Canadian men’s eight rowing team.
There are a variety of ticket options from entire tables to individual tickets. For more information on tickets, please visit www. greatertoronto.scouts.ca/ca/ haliburton-breakfast hosts fundraising gala wTropicana

Fallingbrook Heights Baptist Church at the Centre (93 Birchmount Rd.) recently honoured Rose Madden, the church organist, pianist and key board player for more than 66 years. Madden retired from playing at the church at the end of last year. A celebration for her was recently held at the Birchmount Community Centre. She first began playing the piano at Calvary Baptist Church on Main Street in Toronto before the Second World War. After the war, a small group left Calvary Baptist and joined Victoria Park Baptist, then at Victoria Park and Kingston Road to start a new church. They purchased a property at the corner of Blantyre Avenue and Clonmore Drive and became known as Fallingbrook Heights Baptist Church.

Fallingbrook church pianist Rose Madden honoured for 66 years
A publication of ®
Madden played a small organ at a special outdoor service to commemorate the laying of the church cornerstone in the fall of 1947. The church opened in October of 1948 with more than 350 people attending including dignitaries from the Baptist Convention and local politicians. Madden was the organist that day. She began to play when suddenly the power went out. After a short delay the service continued without the organ. The power was only restored in time for the evening service with a smaller attendance and no dignities. Thus was the beginning of her tenure as Fallingbrook’s organist. Madden later would also take on the choir
director role. The church would give her a $100 honorarium at the end of each year which she quickly signed back to the church to help with expenses. She led a number of church choirs over the years and talks fondly of the people in those choirs and recalls the kibitzing and great times they enjoyed together. During her playing days, Madden has worked alongside nine pastors, three youth leaders, several interim pastors and two student pastors. In addition to her music responsibilities, she has also served in many areas and capacities in the church. Just over 16 years ago, the church building at Clonmore Drive and Blantyre Avenue was sold and the congregation has since met at the Birchmount Community Centre where it is still active and known as the Church at the Centre. Madden demonstrated great flexibility and grace during this move. She went from playing the organ and piano in the old building to playing an electronic key board. Madden has been married to her husband John for 66 years. Congregation members could not pay tribute to one without acknowledging the other. Together they served the church and community and are considered great mentors and example to many. They couple has three children, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Duchess of York helps Scarborough World Gala raise $2M for hospital The Scarborough Hospital Foundation second annual Scarborough World Gala helped raise $2 million for the hospital’s Cancer Care program. The event took place Saturday at the Sheraton Centre downtown and featured a number of special guests including the Duchess of York Lady Sarah Ferguson and musician Lawrence Gowan. “On behalf of everyone at The Scarborough Hospital, we extend our gratitude to all of those who supported this year’s gala,” said Robert Biron, president and CEO, of The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) in a press release. The hospital’s Cancer Care program provides holistic care for cancer patients – from diagnosis, to surgery, through treatment, and recovery. Saturday’s gala included a Lifetime Achievement Award
presentation to Dr. Dhun Noria, Chief of Laboratory Med i ci ne a nd Me di c al Director of Laboratories at TSH, for her commitment and dedication to the hospital and Scarborough. survivor She is a two-time breast cancer survivor and knows first-hand about the fear, uncertainty and anxiety that follows a diagnosis. “I am humbled to be honoured as the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient,” said Dr. Noria. “As both a physician and patient of The Scarborough Hospital, I know too well the horror of this disease called cancer, but I also know very well the excellent care provided by our hospital. I am committed to ensuring that members of our Scarborough community who are fighting this disease
receive the same outstanding care close to home.” The Duchess of York provided the keynote speech. Lawrence Gowan, whose wife Janice received chemotherapy treatment at TSH in 2012 following breast cancer surgery, performed. Janice shared her story at the gala. “Like Dr. Noria, I am also a two-time cancer survivor,” said Janice. “For me, the chemotherapy was terrible and I was admitted to the hospital on numerous occasions. The compassionate and talented health care team at The Scarborough Hospital made all the difference to me and gave me a faith in myself that I could survive my second battle with cancer.”

Soccer players can make Dutch Connections at local camp
“
SEAN DURACK active@insidetoronto.com Scarborough native Andrew Ornoch may have retired from pro soccer, forced into it early after a career-ending injury a couple of years ago, but he isn’t leaving the game in pursuit of other adventures. Ornoch, a Blessed Pope Jo h n Pa u l I I C a t h o l i c Secondary School graduate and product of the North Scarborough Soccer Club, has been channelling his energy these days into a local soccer school that teaches the popular and battle-proven Dutch style of the game. And he’s not going on this Scarborough soccer school mission alone. Pro career Ornoch, who led a successful pro soccer career in Holland, has combined forces with another successful soccer local, Jonathon de Guzman, in addition to some of Holland’s top trainers
With Brazil playing at home, there will be a lot of pressue on them to win, but I like Holland. They have a very strong team and could quite possiblly win. – Andrew Ornoch
Andrew Ornoch, in photo, and Jorg van Nieuwenhuyjzen will be running the Dutch Connections soccer skills camp in Scarborough this summer. The pair are also offering their insights into the Dutch team for The Mirror’s World Cup 2014 coverage. You see what they have to say about this year’s tournament in Brazil by visiting us at www.insidetoronto. com/worldcupto
from its elite level Feyenoord Rotterdam of the top level Eredivisie, to bring even more credibility to the GTA-based Dutch Connections FC soccer school. The school, which caters to
the U8 to U17 ages, currently has three locations that will be operating two Feyenoord camps this summer – in Scarborough, Mississauga and Oakville. As opposed to an acad-
emy which focuses on “the team” the Dutch Connections concept focuses on providing extra technique training and improving “the individual”. “There are many styles of play and there’s no defined right way to play the game, but Holland is all about developing the individual player. And they play a very aggressive, attack-minded, possession based system,” said Ornoch, who moved on to play NCAA Division I soccer at the University of Detroit
Mercy after high school in Scarborough before playing pro in Hungary, Denmark and Holland. “Whereas the Italian style, for example, is a more defensive mindset. There’s no right way, just different.” Experience Ornoch runs Dutch Connections with co-founder and former Dutch pro Jörg van Nieuwenhuyjzen, and the camp’s popularity is growing. “I think it comes down to our professional experience,” said Ornoch about the interest locally in the supplementary training program. “For us it’s a big deal to have them (Dutch trainers) come to our backyard. These guys aren’t just wearing the shirt. “Day in and day out they are working with the top players in the world. It’s a great opportunity for our kids to work with the top professionals – and that’s what we’re all
about.” Dutch Connections isn’t the only reason for Ornoch and local soccer fans to get excited this summer. World Cup From June 12 to July 13, Brazil will be hosting the World Cup. Of course with Holland in the tournament, Ornoch is a bit biased with respect to who he favours to win this year. “With Brazil playing at home, there will be a lot of pressure on them to win, but I like Holland. “They have a very strong team and could quite possibly win. I also like Spain, but they are a bit past their prime. Germany will be strong too.” The Scarborough training camp, which is still open for registration, runs from July 7 to 11.

Battle of Scarborough takes place in Kings/Ducks series The Anaheim Ducks were in a position to clinch their bestof-seven, second-round series against the Los Angeles Kings last night, thanks to an unexpected source – Scarborough’s Devante Smith-Pelly, a former student at Birchmount Park Collegiate. He helped Anaheim win their third straight game Monday night 4-3 with a pair of goals 83 seconds apart in
the second period. For his efforts, Smith-Pelly was selected first star of the game. It was Anaheim’s third straight win in the series to give them a 3-2 series lead heading into last night’s game. For a report on how that game went, visit us online today at www.scarboroughmirror. com In the previous game, on
Saturday, Smith-Pelly scored the winning goal in Anaheim’s 2-0 win (which tied the series at 2-2). His recent scoring splurge has given him five goals for the post season – the most among Anaheim players. He has yet to add an assist. During the regular season he was only called up for 19 games, contributing two goals and eight assists.

“We’re just having a lot of fun,” 21-year-old Smith-Pelly said in an interview posted on NHL.com. “It’s fun to play in the playoffs. This is what you dream about when you grow up. We’re just trying to enjoy it, and so far, it’s gone pretty well.” So far he’s winning the battle of former Birchmount Park Collegiate students with fellow Scarborough resident
22-year-old Tyler Toffoli quiet so far in the series with an assist in Game 2. Thanks to a productive first-round series, however, Toffoli is sitting at six points in the post season (three goals, three assists). Me a n w h i l e, a n o t h e r Scarborough player Joel Ward, who had a career year with the Washington Capitals (24 goals, 25 assists in 82 games),

helped Canada get back on track at the world championships in Belarus. Ward contributed a goal and an assist in Canada’s 4-3 win over the Czech Republic on Monday. Canada was stunned in its opener by France 3-2 in a shootout last Friday. Next up for Ward and Team Canada is a game against Denmark today.

Park vandalism concerns councillor >>>from page 1 the project, supported by the TV Ontario show Giver and neighbours of the green space east of Kennedy Road, which included a plywood cabinet containing donated children’s books. The cabinet, which the councillor praised in an interview last week as an “innovate approach,” had to be removed a few days earlier due to vandalism. Phil Howe, Scarborough director of the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, which has offices nearby, called the cabinet a charming feature of the playground he said was often used by parents visiting children in the society’s care. “If you’ve got three or four hours with your child, it’s nice to be doing different things,” said Howe. “The park has been a key piece of that.” Thompson said he want people in the community to be watchful in order to prevent more damage to the Treverton playground. Cam Macpherson, a retired high school English teacher who lives nearby and helped put the cabinet together, said he was concerned from the start the feature might be too easily damaged and might not survive a storm.

Novenas/ Card of Thanks HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. E.N.
