Investments made in Scarborough health programs MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough residents will be able to treat their addictions closer to home, thanks to the first local expansion of the Durham Region-based Pinewood Centre program. The $560,000 a year in funding announced by the area health authority Tuesday also includes focused help for addicts who frequent emergency rooms in Scarborough hospitals. Scarborough has been “underserviced” for years in local addiction treatment. The Central East Local Health Integration Network announced in 2008 it was studying resources for addictions across its vast area so it could fill gaps in services.
At the Scarborough Civic Centre this week, the LHIN and Pinewood, a unit of Lakeridge Health with six locations in Durham, said it would open an Eglinton Avenue outpatient clinic in Scarborough by midDecember to manage withdrawl for a variety of addictions. Pinewood hopes to open another Scarborough location soon, added Director Paul McGary, who said Scarborough residents are already 10 per cent of Pinewood’s patients. McGary said he expects to welcome 150 people a year to the first Scarborough centre, which will offer one-week intensive program followed by support groups and contining care – including health restoration and symptom management – helping people work through >>>PROGRAMS, page 16
Variety Village fundraiser Scarborough’s Variety Village has friends at Toronto City Hall – and this Saturday four of them will share a stage. Councillors Gary Crawford, Paula Fletcher, Maria Augimeri and Mike Layton are part of Clamshell Quintet, a band performing at a benefit to help Variety pay for flood damage to its building on Danforth Avenue near Birchmount Road. Crawford, the facility’s local councillor, is also on the bill with his regular rock band, Gently Bent. Older parts of Variety’s recreational complex flooded three times this year, with the worst damage
sustained in the July 15 storm that swamped many homes and businesses in the southwest Scarborough area. Insurance will cover most of the repairs but the charity is short $70,000 and has no reserves to make up the difference. The Variety Village Flood Relief Fundraiser Saturday at the Tara Inn on Kingston Road starts at 7 p.m. with an hour-long Get To Know Variety Village V.I.P. reception. Scarborough Remembrance Day service set for cenotaph Sunday ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Canadian veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice will be honoured and remembered during ceremonies in Scarborough this Sunday, Nov. 11. At 10:45 a.m., a Remembrance Day ceremony takes place at the Scarborough Cenotaph at Kingston Road and Danforth Avenue. School children will read poems and sing hymns as part of the service.
Local politicians are also expected to be on hand. Also, the Toronto Zoo’s 27th annual Remembrance Day ceremony begins 10:55 a.m. at Waterside Theatre. There will be free zoo admission from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for anyone attending the event. The zoo is located on Meadowvale Road north of Sheppard Avenue. Also on Sunday, there will be a wreath laying ceremony remembering a Scarborough soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Kathy Smith, mother of Pte.
Demetrios Diplaros who was killed in Afghanistan with two other Canadian soldiers when the vehicle they were in was struck by a roadside bomb in December of 2008, will place a wreath at the base of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 345 cenotaph in memory of her son and all others who lost their lives in the service of their country during a ceremony slated for midafternoon. Gerry Diplaros, father of Pte. Diplaros, will also place a wreath. Branch 345 is located 81 Peard Rd.
Two men, woman suffer critical injuries in house fire ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A woman who alerted her family to a fire in their Scarborough home early Tuesday is fighting for her life. Toronto Fire Services division commander Bob O’Halloran said the woman pounded on her son’s door and woke him up around 1 a.m. Seven people were in the house at the time. The fire marshal’s office is probing the cause of the two-alarm blaze on Canlish Road near Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue. Five people, including a toddler, were injured. O’Halloran said the blaze appeared to have started in a cube van in the driveway and spread into the house. Four people got out on their own and informed arriving fire crews
that some family members were still inside. Firefighters pulled three people from the home. One man was found in a bathroom, which had towels under the door to keep the smoke out. “He had probably been in the basement, came up the side stairs from the basement and tried to go out the side door but there was too much fire so he decided to go out the front door,” O’Halloran said. “Then when he found that heavily filled with smoke or impassable, he went into the bathroom and put some towels under the door.” The woman who alerted her son to fire had no vital signs when rescued. She was revived by firefighters and paramedics and taken to The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus where she was in critical condition.
A man was taken to the same hospital in critical condition. Another man was taken to Toronto General Hospital, also in critical condition. Another woman and her 22-month-old daughter were taken to Toronto East General Hospital in stable condition. The woman was later transferred to Sunnybrook hospital; the toddler was transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children. O’Halloran said the home had working smoke detectors. “I personally saw three, and the crews reported that the smoke alarms were sounding when they arrived.” Capt. Mike Strapko, also of Toronto Fire, said the fire also spread to a second home. There were 19 fire trucks dispatched to the scene. Damage is estimated at $300,000.

To the editor: In my opinion, it would be a bad idea to move the elephants living at the Toronto Zoo to a new location in California. The Toronto Zoo’s elephants are old and they have been in the Canadian climate and in this location a long time.
I
s recognition of our veterans a case of “out of sight, out of mind?” It shouldn’t be, but it’s a question worth asking. When it comes to Remembrance Day observance, there has been a noticeable shift in recent years. And it’s an inevitable one. Fewer and fewer veterans from earlier conflicts such as the Second World War and the Korean War are with us. Given the passage of time, there is always a risk of the importance of such obserour view vances being diluted for the next generation. This can’t happen. Too Support for much has been sacrificed. But with the ongoing conflict in our veterans Afghanistan, in which Canadians are playing and have played a still strong significant role, we have fresh, contemporary examples of the struggles our veterans endure – both during and after they serve. There is greater public awareness of post-battlefield conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that our veterans must cope with. The good news is Canadians have strong opinions on these issues. A recent Nanos survey says 94 per cent of Canadians believe we have an obligation to ensure modern veterans find meaningful employment after they’ve finished their service. Another 88.9 per cent believe all veterans, whenever and wherever they served, should be honoured on Remembrance Day, even though 82.1 per cent of Canadians think primarily of veterans of the First World War and the Second World War on Remembrance Day. And, 51.8 per cent believe the support veterans receive for conditions such as PTSD is inadequate. The survey was released by Commissionaires, an organization dedicated to ensuring “meaningful employment opportunities” for former members of the Canadian Forces and other organizations dedicated to safety and security. Issues such as employment opportunities for veterans aren’t necessarily front of mind in our collective consciousness. But they must be part of a growing realization that any investment in our country’s defence budget must take into greater consideration the effects – physical, mental, psychological – on those who serve our country. The survey results suggest we value the contributions of our veterans and believe more should be done for them. That’s good. Getting our voices heard to enable meaningful change for our modern veterans is the next step. Reach out to your Member of Parliament to make it known how you feel. Would they be able to survive the long move to a sanctuary located in California? Would they be able to handle a larger space that they are not familiar with? Would they be able to adjust to new people looking after them? ‘Dead Money’ needs to be invested in economy I have more than 40 years of accounting and finance experience, having served in Asia, the MiddleEast, South Africa and North America. I have been waiting for comments from financial experts since Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of Canada, said “Dead Money” kept by companies totals $526 billion Canadian. First, my congratulations to Carney for noting the existence of this accumulated wealth. But it’s a misnomer to call this corporate wealth “Dead Money”. These funds are kept by companies for different reasons, mostly contingency purposes. The heads of these organizations have to decide how to utilize these funds. The company directors are the representatives of the share holders and they have to make the company policy decisions.
My contention is the state authorities have to give appropriate incentives to motivate these companies to invest in various fields. These companies can diversify their activities too. Tax holidays The government needs to give tax holidays for new ventures if they start from these funds. For example, if they chose to invest in tourist industry like building hotels in a particular area, the government can give tax holiday of three to five years. These companies can also invest in manufacturing. If these companies invest in an industry with a foreign collaboration and if they can bring in investments from companies from overseas, the federal government can give incentives. If a joint venture is
formed along with another company from another country, then an incentive can be considered. The government may think giving tax holidays is not beneficial, but they have to consider other benefits connected to the new ventures such as employment. Government may lose in corporate taxes but they can benefit from the income taxes from employees who work in these companies. Work together To succeed, all three levels of government have to work hand in hand. The federal government should take the lead and work with the provincial governments who can select the cities where the prospective industries will be most beneficial. Banks also can play a major role. Every quarter
almost all banks make millions of dollars as profits and they can share in these ventures. There are some countries, if they find ‘Dead Money’, they will forcibly freeze the funds and try to use them for government purposes. Mostly, this is done in non-democratic countries. It cannot happen in countries like Canada. All authorities in all three levels of government should work together in selecting the projects and motivate or allure these companies to invest in attractive projects. The benefit will be for each and every one and the country will prosper as a whole. Without any hesitation, these organizations will convert their ‘Dead Money’ to ‘Live Money”. Warren V. Kanagaratnam

Ford may have to drop football
I
SO WHY ISN’T YOUR INTERNET?
s it fair to say that we’re into a crisis of confidence in big municipal government in eastern Canada? Or if not government, then mayors? Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay lent some truth to this this week when he quit his job over allegations of corruption within his party — allegations he firmly denies. And here in Toronto ... well, Rob Ford’s not resigning over corruption allegations. But there are a couple of bus-loads of commuters – who stood out in the rain last Thursday after their Finch Avenue buses were rerouted to provide shelter to Ford’s football team – who probably wish he would step down. The question for Mayor Ford is just what job he should quit. And really, the best thing that he could do is follow Tremblay’s example – and quit coaching football. As absurd as it sounds, really the gridiron has been the root of much of Mayor Ford’s undoing.

While in interviews, he’s claimed that the biggest problems in his first two years have to do with reading and talking on the phone while driving — the biggest problem has been what also seems to be his greatest love. Pending a judge’s ruling, the mayor could lose his job over the way he comported himself around his football charity. In the meantime, it’s made him into a truant at council, as he leaves to coach his team at Etobicoke’s Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School while council and his committee deal with key city business. And now, this business with the TTC buses that were re-routed. As I write this, it’s unclear how exactly passengers ended up being
ordered off the buses so they could be re-routed. Ford says he didn’t do it. But it becomes a matter of appearances. Ford has shown in all sorts of ways that his team is a priority for him. At times, it seems as though it’s a bigger priority than his constituents. It may well be that this isn’t so. But it also shouldn’t appear so. That is something that Tremblay understood as he resigned from office. Mayor Ford shouldn’t resign from office over his love of football. But he should recognize that it has become more than a distraction from his day job. It has destroyed confidence in his office. Football has been a demanding mistress for Mayor Ford, and he needs to call it off – and renew his vows with the Torontonians who elected him. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. Scarborough Music Theatre stages spirited, magical production of Oz Scarecrow were amazing. Their characters are funny for kids, but with their double entendres, great for adults as well. Their costumes were wonderful and they are a talented and entertaining trio. Stanwick is amazingly wicked as the Witch of the West and not only is she believable and fun to watch, but you can see she is having a lot of fun with her role. Watch out for her “melting” scene, you won’t be disappointed! This cast, and the people who helped to bring this hugely ambitious show to life, are too many to mention, but hats off to all for a job well done. Whether you know and love this show, or have never seen it, take your whole family and enjoy the amazing journey. carborough Music Theatre garnered a much-deserved standing ovation for its spirited and magical performance of The Wizard of Oz. This show is a true visual extravaganza, with a multitude of whimsical costumes, moveable set pieces, great lighting and creative audio visual effects. Written by L. Frank Baum with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, The Wizard of Oz is an ambitious musical to stage with so many scene changes, characters, costumes and details to be portrayed. But Scarborough Music Theatre does a fantastic job of bringing Kansas, Munchkinland and Oz to life; and all the fun characters that inhabit them. Much of the cast played multiple characters and donned several costumes each to accomplish this task. This story, for those who may not know, is about a little girl named Dorothy (Sarah Davis) who lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em (Kerri Henman), Uncle Henry (Jim Hyslop and her little dog Toto (played by a real dog named Toto). After a fight with her aunt and uncle, Dorothy runs away with Toto and gets swept away in a storm, landing in Munchkinland. Here, Dorothy encounters all kinds of new friends,
foes and adventure. But despite enjoying this magical land she wants to go home and must embark on a dangerous quest to see the Wizard of Oz to get there. On her way she meets the Scarecrow (Craig Estrella), the Tin Woodman (Chris White), and the Cowardly Lion (Jason Silzer). They want a brain, a heart and courage respectively, so they decide to accompany Dorothy on her journey to Oz. With the help of the Good Witch of the East (Jan Harvey) and each other, the foursome tackle all their fears and the obstacles thrown their way by the Wicked Witch of the West (Lorene Stanwick), to see the Wizard of Oz (Chris Hardess). Fr o m t h e m o m e n t the show begins there’s never a shortage of things to engage the audience. There are munchkins and winkies, snow fairies and elves, fighting trees and winged monkeys, exactly like an fairytale. Many of these characters are played by adorable kids, too many to mention, but individually and as an ensemble, this cast is wellpolished and thoroughly entertaining. Davis plays her role of Dorothy with the perfect combination of talent and cuteness. It’s too bad microphone problems made it so you couldn’t hear her clearly some of the time, because she has a beautiful singing voice. The comic trio of the Lion, Tin Man and

Birchmount’s Hayfron wins OFSAA cross country gold Edward Hayfron has earned Birchmount Park Collegiate’s first ever individual provincial cross country title. He won the midget boys 5K run, in a time of 16:15, at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial cross country championship meet at Heart Lake
Conservation Area in Brampton on Saturday. He was one of two medallists from Toronto, the other being Gabriela Stafford from Toronto French School who also won gold – in the senior girls 5K event in a time of 17:25. Coach Glenn Duncan, in an email, termed it “an out-
standing feat considering the school’s long tradition of excellence in the sport.” The only Scarborough high school student to record a top-10 finish, Hayfron helped lead his midget boys team to third place overall. Other team members are William Calverley (49th - 18:05), Jack Kelly (72nd
- 18:20), Nikola Stakic (123rd - 19:00) and Liam Cox (185th - 19:40). Birchmount Park also recorded Scarborough’s only other top-five team finish, with the junior boys earning a bronze medal. Team members included Luke Mackrell (15th - 22:16), Carter Wood (53rd -
23:11), Ramy Mohamed (96th - 24:12), Daniel Wilson (103rd - 24:20) and Neil McCann (249th - 28:17). Birchmount Park missed the overall boys title for a second year in a row by a very slim margin to McLaughlin Secondary School from Oshawa. That’s not surprising as the Scarborough school swept the boys events (midget, junior and senior) at their earlier Toronto District School Board (TDSB) qualifying event. Hayfron, meanwhile, will try to complete a perfect season Sunday, Nov. 11, when he races for the Phoenix Athletics Club in the Athletics Ontario Provincial Club Championships in Kingston. He’s won every high school cross country race he has entered this season, including the sophmore boys’ race at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, New York in September.

Toronto once led North America in subway construction
Surplus fare revenue during war years funded transit growth RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com For the three decades following World War Two, Toronto led all of North America when it came to subway expansion, says an urban historian. Virtually all of Toronto’s existing subway infrastructure – over 50-kilometres of track – was built between the late 1940s and 1970s, including the Yonge, BloorDanforth, University and Spadina lines, says Jay Young who has extensively studied the subway system. “Toronto was not the only city building subway infrastructure, but it certainly was leading the pack during this time,” said Young. Young, who did his dissertation at York University on the history of the TTC subway, presented his findings to a group of transit aficionados at the Spadina House museum near Casa Loma late last month.
For his presentation, entitled Subway Life and Transit Expansion during Toronto’s Automobile Age, the historian and co-founding editor of Activehistory.ca detailed the subway network’s evolution making use of archival documents and illustrations. The talk was part of an ongoing discussion series in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. SUBWAY CARS According to Young, Queen Elizabeth herself inspected the city’s first subway cars in 1953, the year before the inaugural line below Yonge Street – spanning southwards to Union Station from Eglinton – opened. And at some point, there was some consideration to name what became known as Osgoode station after Queen Elizabeth. Building the Yonge line might never have taken place had the TTC not enjoyed a
surplus in fare revenue which had risen dramatically over the war years, said Young. “If not for saved revenue during war it’s really unlikely the Yonge subway would have been built soon after, if at all,” said Young during his hourplus presentation. “Especially considering the resistance of city to help pay for it.” Fr o m t h e 1 9 5 0 s a n d onwards, however, Toronto governments became more supportive of new transit as a way to relieve traffic congestion as well as provide connections for those migrating to the outer suburbs of Scarborough and Etobicoke, which had resulted, according to Young, in a coverage area six times larger than before. To finance the majority of the costs for the BloorDanforth and University subways the city’s Metro council opted to impose in 1958 a property tax for all residents which marked the first time taxpayer revenues would pay for expansion and not fares. Young said the first metro council chair Frank Gardiner – for whom the expressway is named – should be recog-

nized for spearheading this shift which was often opposed by irate rate-payer associations. One such group from Southern Etobicoke, concerned the transit improvements would only benefit the City of Toronto, unsuccessfully opposed the property tax levy all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. “Gardiner played a key role in the policy shift because he realized the limits of automobiles,” said Young. “Transit was a more economical and efficient way to move mass
numbers of people.” In the 1970s the appetite for transit funding neared its peak and with the 1971 cancellation of the Spadina Expressway, Ontario premier Bill Davis promised more money for subway construction – which also included paying for station costs for the first time. But since the opening of the Spadina line in 1978, less than 15-kilometres have been added. Meanwhile the city’s existing lines face capacity issues
and disgruntled commuters grow more frustrated over delays and overcrowding. And, just like in the past, the question remains who will pay for new projects. But Young, who first became enamoured with the Toronto subway system after moving from the Niagara area seven years ago, said he believes today’s advocates can take inspiration from the past’s “legacy of success”. “Hopefully the history will continue to inspire people to fight for better transit,”

The question of whether to invite casino operators to set up one or more gambling halls in Toronto will be going to public consultations – but Toronto’s executive committee has voted to ask for a better sense of what the city will get out of the deal as those consultations occur. The motion came from Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee after a day of deputations on a report by Toronto’s City Manager Joe Pennachetti, and an accompanying report from Ernst & Young. The report extolled general economic benefits for Toronto, and laid out a tantalizing proposal for revenue sharing that could garner as much as $168 million a year for Toronto, or as little as $18 million. At the top end, Pennachetti told the committee that could mean an end to the city’s perennial financial woes. But when it came turn

wrong with that model, we’ll make less money.” Willowdale Councillor and committee-member David Shiner said he needed a clearer picture of the finances before supporting it. “I want to know what the OLG is prepared to put on the table, and the casino operators as well because without that you can’t vote on anything,” he said. “I think we have to understand that.” Nearly 50 deputations came to talk to the committee – a good many of them workers and management from the Woodbine racetrack in northern Etobicoke. While the OLG has made it clear it would prefer a downtown location, management at Woodbine said removing slot machines from the racetrack and putting them in Toronto would destroy the racetrack. Nick Eaves, President of Woodbine Entertainment Group, told the committee at least one of the two casinos planned for the GTA should be integrated with the racetrack.

CANADIAN MOSIAC PROJECT: Tim Van Horn asks Sharanya Mohan and Sajeevan Yoges if they would like to be photographed as part of his Canadian Mosaic Project at Scarborough Town Centre. Van Horn is four years into a nine-year project to photograph 36,000 portraits of people across Canada. When the project is complete Van Horn, who is from Alberta, plans to use all of the photographs to make a mosaic of images forming a giant Canadian flag. He was at Scarborough Town Centre last Thursday and Friday taking photos of local resident for the project.

Carefirst said it will be establishing a “community hub” to deliver its assistedliving services to clusters of high-risk Asian seniors in the Steeles, L’Amoreaux and Agincourt areas of Scarborough. Pickering-Scarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles said these investments were combined with $9 million in additional funding to Central East Community Care Action Centre, the agency responsible for assigning home care to seniors. “This is all great news for the Scarborough community,” she said.

Officials from the area health authority got some unexpected jabs Tuesday when they explained the group’s purpose and plans to Scarborough Community Council. The Central East Local Health Integration Network doles out $2.1 billion in provincial funds each year to 140 organizations serving an area including Scarborough and points as far east as Peterborough. James Meloche, a senior LHIN director who was at Scarborough Civic Centre to make an announcement, faced probing questions later from councillors. Mike Del Grande, who has served on the board of The Scarborough Hospital, pressed Meloche
on when the hospital’s General campus might get money from the province to remake its operating rooms. TSH says the surgical suites at the Lawrence Avenue building, finished around 1956, are among the oldest in Ontario. “How can we continue to have operating rooms so outdated that they’re an embarrassment?” Del Grande asked Meloche. Meloche acknowledged the hospital faces “challenges” with the surgical suites and there is a need to refurbish them, but said decisions committing capital funds from the province are made through Infrastructure Ontario. – Mike Adler

Police hope to persuade pedestrians not to talk on
cellphones or text while crossing the street as part of a week-long safety campaign launched this week. “Even though it’s not
against the law, it’s a real huge safety risk,” Sgt. Jack West said on Monday. Police usually see a spike in the number of pedestri-
ans struck by vehicles in November. The Step Up and Be Safe campaign, which ends Sunday, Nov. 11, aims to prevent that. “When one pedestrian gets killed, there’s a human devastation that’s carried on,” West said. “There’s a ripple effect into the trauma room. You have families, you have friends, children. Everybody feels the hurt, not just the deceased.”
Nineteen pedestrians have died in collisions in Toronto so far this year, representing about half of all traffic fatalities. West suggested pedestrians wear bright clothing and cross at signalized intersections. The fine for jaywalking is $50. “I think if pedestrians can have a better understanding of driver behaviour that will keep them safer,” said West. “Drivers at intersections
quite often are anxious: they want to make a left turn, they’re watching for the oncoming traffic, they want to beat that vehicle. “They make their turn and for the very first time they see the pedestrian crossing and it’s too late.” Pedestrians, West said, should “put the cellphone down, stop texting” and instead scan the intersection, watching for turning vehicles, while crossing the street. Pair of teenagers facing charges after stabbing at Cedarbrae library Two teenage males face attempted murder charges in connection with a double stabbing outside a Scarborough library. The violence happened outside Cedarbrae library at 545 Markham Rd. at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 1. One man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Hassan Baig, 19, was arrested Friday, Nov.
2. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of robbery. A 17-year-old male, arrested Sunday, Nov. 4, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. He can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Maintain sufficient carrier waiting (prospect) lists or establish new ones. • Maintain all records concerning carriers and routes including financial records and complaints • Address customer concerns in a professional and timely manner while ensuring the concerns are resolved and the carriers are aware of the concerns • Investigate and resolve delivery issues where required • Drop off supplies to carriers including elastics and carrier bags as required. • Maintain records as directed by our policies and procedures Competencies/Skills and Experience: • Strong customer service skills • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Ability to work within a fast-paced, team oriented environment • Previous experience in a newspaper environment an asset • Physical activity - walking, lifting up to 10Ibs • Reliable vehicle and valid drivers license required • CPIC(Canadian Police Information Centre) clearance certificate required prior to approval on applicant

You may believe that you’re doing the best for your vehicle by allowing it to ‘warm up’ in the cold weather with a few minutes of idling. In fact, more than just the engine needs to be warmed up and this can only happen if the vehicle is moving. For an average vehicle, it takes about five kilometers of driving to warm up the engine as well as the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires.
Shutting the engine down One of the false arguments made to justify idling is that it costs money to shut the engine down. That is a complete misnomer. Ten seconds of idling consumes the same amount of fuel as starting the engine after shutting it down. As
for the wear and tear factor on the battery and starter, it adds up to about 10 dollars per year, compared to saving an average of 66-litres of gasoline a year by simply reducing idle time from five minutes to 30 seconds.
Idling and engine wear Prolonged idling is also one of the worst things the owner can do to an engine. Aside from being a complete waste of fuel (you are traveling zero kilometres for the fuel consumed), excessive idling can contaminate the engine oil, which will lead to premature, and very costly, engine wear down the road.
Keeping the tank topped-up The practice of idling with a low fuel level not only stirs up any dirt in the tank, but it also promotes the build-up of condensation in the tank, especially in colder temperatures. Keeping the tank topped up minimizes both risks.

The rear of the refreshed Hyundai Genesis Coupe shows off new LED taillights. The interior of the 2013 Genesis Coupe is attractively laid out, with a nice mix of soft-touch materials, textures and metallic accents, along with electroluminescent instruments.
The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is an affordable performance car aimed at the driving enthusiast. The big news is a boost in power from 306 to 348 hp for the 3.8-litre engine and 210 to 274 hp for the 2.0T. The GT comes with 19-inch alloy wheels and a bright red Brembo brake package.
This V6 makes 348 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. The refreshed Genesis Coupe sports a more menacing demeanour with an aggressively redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights, LED daytime running lights, fog lights, and hood.
■411 ON THE GENESIS: Hyundai’s re-do of the Genesis Coupe for 2013 is much more than the nip here and a tuck there. To start with, the 2013 Genesis Coupe gets a serious power boost. Thanks in part to direct injection technology, the 3.8-litre Lambda DOHC V6 engine in the GT gains 42 horsepower to 348 and 29 lb/ft of torque to 295 that will propel the car from 0-100 km in the low five-second range. Add to that a more aggressive exterior design with new front fascia, grille, headlights, fog lights and hood design and you end up with a Genesis Coupe that has significant improvements for 2013. Other new features are retuned, low-velocity control suspension dampers, electroluminescent gauge cluster with information display, telescopic steering wheel added to the tilt function, power lumber adjustments for the driver’s seat and redesigned centre stack. The base 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine is also significantly more powerful with a new twin-scroll turbocharger and a larger, more thermally efficient intercooler. Among the new trim features is a stitched seam on the dashboard, while soft touch materials have a lower sheen for a more luxurious look. On the centre stack is a multigauge cluster with instant fuel economy, torque level (3.8 GT models) or turbocharged booster pressure (2.0T models) and oil temperature. The sport front seats have deep side bolsters for improved lateral support. Outside, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels on the Genesis Coupe are all new for this year as are LED taillights. Even with the more muscular look, the car’s proportions are unchanged with short front and rear overhangs, creating a wedge-like profile with broad shoulders and a wide stance. Spring, damper and bushing ratings have all been recalibrated this time around for better road feel, more precise body motion control and best of all, more ride comfort. The 3.8 GT has a track-tuned suspension that offers firmer front and rear spring rates, and even with the firmer suspension, ride comfort shows a huge improvement. I have driven a MX-5 every year since the first one bowed in 1989 and it still provides tons of driving enjoyment, as it did the very first time I got behind the wheel. The Mazda got it right the first time. In fact, besides dropping the name Miata in favour of MX-5, little has changed over the past 23 years. There is still a smalldisplacement inline four-cylinder engine mounted longitudinally with rear-drive. When it debuted, the engine was a 116 hp, 1.6-litre. Then it was bumped up to 1.8litres in 2000 with 140 hp. Today it is 2.0-litres and 167 hp. Imagine, just 400cc in more than two decades and this, coupled with the low weight, still gives the MX-5 enough power to have fun but not enough to get yourself in trouble. And that’s the beauty of it. Which brings me to another thing that surprisingly has not changed over the years and that’s the price. Tested here is a box-stock base GX model with five-speed manual transmission priced at $29,145. I tested the same car in the year 2000 with the five-speed and it was priced at $27,145. And when you consider the 2013 MX-5 comes standard with expensive items such as traction control, stability control plus front and side airbags, the price comes out just about even. Now you can add a lot. The GX is the only model with the five-speed manual. The GS and GT have a six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic with paddle shifters but that, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. If you go higher up the Miata feeding chain, there is an optional metal folding top. But the cloth top of the current car has evolved. Now it has glass rear window, not vinyl. The glass rear window has an electric defogger which is far better than the plastic one that would go opaque and tear over time. There is a trunk with 150 litres of cargo volume. You could shoehorn two golf bags if you took the clubs out first, but two-three overnight bags is more like it. On most of the highways I travelled, the speed limit was 80 km/h so passing is just a snick down into fourth and you’re by. The overriding sensation of the 2012 MX-5 is its lightness – not just on the controls but the whole car. Part of this is due to the engine being as far back
as the engineers could place it. Couple that to the drive being just behind your behind, the mass is well in the centre of the four wheels. This translates to the nexus of the mass being just about between the seats, letting the driver get maximum directional stability by feeling he/she is at the fulcrum of any turn. Not only does this make you feel in full control but, with the top down eliminating any blind spots, the little MX-5 just screams “let’s enjoy ourselves�. Which is exactly what I did. Mindful that it was a perfect fall day and the provincial police were out in force, just rolling along taking in the sights, colours and sounds of that surprisingly quiet 2.0-litre engine made for a memorable day. I have to confess I love walking up to the MX-5 with the top down and just plunking myself down fighter pilot style. The steering wheel was and remains perfectly placed with all the information you need contained in the tight instrument package directly in the line of sight. It is the kind of car you feel a connection with – something impossible with a CUV or hybrid. As this is being written, Mazda is working in concert with AlfaRomeo on a new small sportscar probably to replace the MX-5. Will it be better? On Nov. 5, employees at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) in Cambridge celebrated the building of TMMC’s five millionth vehicle, a red Lexus RX350.

(TMMC) built its five millionth car in Canada on Nov. 5, a red Lexus RX350. “From humble beginnings, today TMMC is a globally respected manufacturing operation that can produce more than 500,000 vehicles per year,� says TMMC Chairman Ray Tanguay. “Our success has allowed us to create more good jobs for Canadians and become a better corporate citizen for our community.� TMMC began operations in Cambridge, Ontario in 1988 in a plant designed to build just 50,000 vehicles per year, approximately the same number of vehicles
Toyota sold in Canada at that time. Today, TMMC has the capacity to build more than 500,000 vehicles annually at plants in Cambridge, Ontario and Woodstock, Ontario. Toyota now builds more than two vehicles in Canada for every vehicle Toyota sells in Canada. Sentra grows in size, still sips fuel
Classified as a compact sedan, this photo shows the 2013 Nissan Sentra is really mid-size especially in terms of passenger volume, but with a starting price of $14,848.

The CVT used on the Sentra is equipped with a sub-planetary gear that contributes to improved fuel efficiency at high speeds and better response at lower speeds. Fuel economy with the CVT is rated at 6.6 L/100 km city, 4.9L/100 km highway and a claimed class-leading 5.8L/100 km combined all on regular. The manual is rated at 7.5/5.5L/100 km city/highway. allows Streaming Audio via Bluetooth and a largish 5.8-inch touch-screen monitor. I never text anytime to anybody, but I did use the Navi system extensively. I know the highways and byways of Napa/ Sonoma pretty well and this was a chance to go down a number of roads I’d seen before but was afraid of getting lost on, as the rolling hills in this area look relatively the same in all directions. Acquisition in real time between where I was on the road and where it showed I was on the screen is almost instantaneous, which shows just how far these systems have progressed even on economy cars. At one point I got turned around in the Town of Petaluma, home of the World Arm-Wresting Championship, which put it on the map. Zooming in and out with the system, I found the right road out of town as simple as that. With a cloudless sky and temperatures at 73 degrees F, there was no need to try the available dual zone air conditioning which is still a rarity in this segment. At the end of the day, I came away impressed by not just the mileage but the ease of handling on a wide range of road surfaces and speed limits. Nissan starting phasing out automatics 20 years ago and to date has installed more than nine million CVTs in their vehicles. Another factor is weight, which is reduced by 150 lb over the outgoing model plus a rather slippery 0.29 drag coefficient, which is surprising due to its largish size for a compact. With the CVT you can select either “Eco� or “Sport� or just leave it in “Normal� using rocker switches on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Select Eco and it changes the valve timing and transmission mapping for improved fuel economy. Go to Sport and the reverse is true with a noticeable pickup in power. I was lucky enough to have a Sentra to myself for a day with no restriction on

Always a stable seller, Nissan’s Sentra has trailed the likes of Civic, Mazda3 and Corolla but that’s about to change. Nissan is currently in the midst of launching a whole slew of new products starting with the Pathfinder reviewed on these pages and now the seventh-generation, 2013 Sentra. Nissan makes it easy for buyers to choose with one engine, two transmissions and four trim levels. The power plant is Nissan’s familiar 1.8litre inline four-cylinder driving the front wheels producing 130 hp and 128 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed manual (on the base S and SV) or “next generation� Xtronic CVT. Pricing on the four trims starts with the entry-level S M6/CVT at $14,848/$17,548,

where to go. I grabbed a SV CVT (which will probably be the volume model) and headed west towards the coast from my hotel at the north end of Napa Valley in California. On the high-speed Highway 101, I went to Sport to get on the freeway and the engine responded well and without the “rubber banding� that so dogged early CVTs. On the highway at the posted 65 mph limit, I pushed the Eco button and the engine immediately dropped 300 rpm like I had put on the brakes slightly. Throttle response was sluggish compared to Sport but the tach proved less fuel was being consumed. Over more than 300 miles and some five hours of driving my average fuel consumption in a US-spec car was (US) 39.7 mpg or 5.9L/100 km. Now I did most of the driving in Eco on roads that were primarily 35-55 mph but the fuel number, considering this was real world, impressed me. The 2013 Sentra is slightly longer and lower than the 2012 model, but looks bigger. It has been restyled with the twin arrow grille treatment now being used by both Nissan and Infiniti, overall it is a pleasant design but not bold. Inside it’s another story with available leather and maple wood trim but it’s the instruments that stand out for their clarity and simplicity. The main gauges are Nissan’s Fine Vision electroluminescent design that are backlit even in daylight, providing a high-quality look that is also easy to read thanks also to the large numbers for aging eyes. But it is in the back seat where the Sentra shines with legroom of 949.96 mm and that’s with the front seats all the way back. The rear seat is a standard 60/40 split folding design, offering versatile access to the 428 litres (15.1 cu ft) of trunk space, which is 57 litres larger than the 2012 Sentra. The SV model I drove was fitted with the NissanConnect system with Navigation that includes a Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant. It not only reads incoming text messages and allows drivers to reply without taking their hands off of the steering wheel, but also gives real-time fuel prices, flight times and weather updates. Hybrid powers up 2013 VW Jetta Not content with offering affordable low consumption gasoline and diesel cars, Volkswagen has added a third option with the 2013 Jetta Hybrid. You would think a small displacement diesel and gas vehicle would be enough for the fuel efficiency conscious, but Volkswagen is convinced increasing numbers of buyers feel some form of hybrid should be their next choice. A 1.4-litre inline four-cylinder turbo direct injection gasoline engine producing 150 hp and 184 lb/ft of torque powers the Jetta Hybrid. According to VW, the Jetta Hybrid uses about 20 per cent less fuel than an equivalently sized sedan with a gasoline engine. In city stop/go driving that goes up to about 30 per cent. In pure electric mode that Jetta Hybrid can hit up to 6070 km/h and travel up to 2.0 km depending on driving conditions. The hybrid system borrows technology from the Touareg Hybrid CUV using a clutch that decouples the gasoline engine when in electric mode or “coasting�. Besides regenerative power being routed back the battery when braking, when the driver lifts off the accelerator at speeds up to 100 km/h and coasts, this also serves to provide power to the lithium-ion battery. The 220-volt lithium-ion battery is located under the rear seat and weighs 163 lb. By watching the weight, the Jetta Hybrid comes in at just 221 lb more than the standard sedan. Even the seven-speed dual clutch transmission is trimmed down in size and weight. There are about three separate ways of monitoring your fuel conservation. When driving, it is hard to take you eyes off the ePower meter that is part of the overall hybrid energy flow display integrated into the multi-info readout found in the main instrument cluster. Here’s where it gets cool. The Power Meter is an additional mul-
tifunctional display that replaces the tach on the left side of the instrument cluster. It informs the driver of the momentary operating state of the Jetta Hybrid. You can watch the tach needle swing up and down as the engine kicks in or when regenerative power is replenishing the battery. Lastly, when you give it the gas and the battery adds its thrust, the needle swings all the way to the right in the boost mode. But wait, there’s more. Part of the audio system also helps coach the driver with messages on the audio display.
For instance, the audio display’s Zero Emissions menu offers a graphic of the car’s zero emissions driving time. The zero emissions values are shown in the form of percentages in a bar diagram, where the measurement interval of one bar represents one minute of driving. A value of 100 per cent means that the car was driven with zero emissions throughout the driving minute, i.e., with the TSI engine shut off. The effective time period for this is 30 minutes. Lastly the audio monitor can also give an instantaneous depiction of the flow of energy back in forth between
the engine and battery. The Jetta still boasts the biggest interior passenger volume in the compact segment and, despite the battery back intruding into the trunk, cargo volume is still adequate at 11.3 cu ft. There is no doubt electrification of the automobile is no longer a novelty but part of the route to greener, cleaner transportation. With the Hybrid added to the gasoline and diesel Jetta lineup, Volkswagen is on the right road to that goal.
