The Scarborough man was treated by and served alongside an American imposter posing as a Canadian doctor aboard the Royal Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Cayuga. The imposter was Ferdinand Waldo Demara, who took the identity of New Brunswick doctor Joseph Cyr. Demara would later be known as The Great Imposter and would be the subject of a Hollywood movie, in which Tony Curtis played him. “He just seemed like a really down-to-earth, nice man. He used to come down into our mess deck the odd time, just to talk,” Wells said Demara. “He did that several times on the ship, which was quite unusual. An officer didn’t usually do that. I was just a seaman.” On one occasion, the ship’s captain, James Plomer, had an abscessed wisdom tooth and told the doctor he wanted the tooth extracted the next morning. “The doctor said: ‘OK, well I’ve got a book on dentistry, I’ll study it up overnight,’ which he did,” Wells said. “He did take out the captain’s tooth, and the captain said he never had one done better, so he was pleased.” Wells himself was a patient when >>> WELLS, page 3

Police have charged a man with two counts of first degree murder in the July shooting on Danzig Street, which left two people dead and 23 wounded, investigators announced yesterday. Shaquan “Bam Bam” Mesquito, 18, was charged Wednesday, Nov. 7. He has been in custody since July on charges for uttering threats the day before the July 17 neighbourhood barbecue on Danzig Street in the Morningside and Lawrence avenues area. In addition to first degree murder charges, Mesquito was also charged Wednesday with one count of attempted murder, 24 charges of

Police are looking to identify two persons of interest in the shooting and have released composite sketches, Homicide Squad St. Insp. Wells recalled when three badly wounded South Korean fighters were brought onboard the ship for medical treatment. (He snapped a photo of one of the wounded on a stretcher.) The imposter, with help from the sick bay attendant, operated on the gunshot victims, saving their lives. “They used the captain’s table to operate,” Wells said. “I saw the doctor come out of the captain’s cabin. ... What I remember the most was he was just bathed in sweat, you could see beads of sweat on his face because he’d been through an ordeal in working on these people, especially now that we know he wasn’t a real doctor.” A press release was issued on the life-saving surgeries, and it became nation-wide news in Canada. The real Dr. Cyr saw the story and contacted naval headquarters. “The captain just couldn’t believe it when he got the secret signal from Ottawa,” Wells said. Denara, Wells said, was called into the captain’s cabin where he confessed. “We were all pretty well shocked,” Wells said. Demara was sent to Ottawa and discharged from the navy. He would later take on other false identities to get various positions, including a deputy warden at a Texas prison and a teacher in a Maine village. Wells met Demara again in 1979 at a Cayuga crew reunion. Demara, who at the time held a legitimate job as a hospital chaplain in California, was warmly greeted by his former shipmates, Wells said. Demara died of a heart attack three years later. For Wells, the imposter wasn’t the only intriguing memory from the Cayuga. While fueling in July 1950, leading

seaman George Johnson rescued a puppy that was part of a litter being drowned. The captain allowed the dog to be kept onboard as long as she was trained. The canine, named Alice, served two tours of duty to Korea and was the ship’s mascot. Wells said the dog raised the morale of the crew. “When we were eating, it would make the rounds of all the different messes,” he said. “It was nice to have someone other than a human around.” But one day Alice went missing. It turned out, she had fallen between the Cayuga and the ship it was tied next to. “Over the loudspeaker came ‘Alice is between the ships,’” Wells said. “Every sailor that was able rushed up there, and we virtually held the ships apart somehow until they rescued the dog.” Joined at age 17

Wells joined the navy at age 17 in May 1948 and was transferred to the Cayuga in June 1950 when the Korean War started. The Cayuga, joined by the Athabaskan and Sioux, sailed for Korea on July 5, 1950. The Cayuga became the first Canadian ship to fire in anger since the Second World War, bombarding the port city of Yosu. Wells served as a signalman. On Sept. 15, 1950, the Cayuga took part in the invasion at Inchon, which resulted in a rapid advance by Allied troops up to the Yalu River. “We pulled into this body of water, dropped our anchor,” Wells said. “A small naval vessel took a bunch of provisions ashore for these guerrillas, and the next thing you know about 50 yards in front of the forecastle of the ship two great huge geysers of water shoot up as the shells started landing because there were gunners on the land, two or three miles away.

We had jobs to do. ... The fright came after when you started thinking about it, how close it had come.” Wells served two tours of duty during the Korean War. He was discharged in May 1953 after five years of service. “It was an honour to serve,” he said. “The South Korean people are so thankful for what we did they can’t treat you well enough, and they’ve been like that ever since we came back right up to today.”

>>>from page 1 But Mistry said “there is a fear” in the surrounding streets that just the use of the name Malvern could lower home prices. “Every time you mention the word Malvern, the prices drop.” Councillors seemed to concede this impression of Malvern, a citydesignated priority neighbourhood. Norm Kelly asked MFRC officials if they would consider changing the United Way-backed agency’s name because it has grown “beyond Malvern,” a community he said was “built for a distinct purpose” and which “hasn’t had the highest reputation.” Glenn De Baeremaeker, another councillor, proposed a motion asking MFRC to consider naming the proposed two-story building the “Rouge River” Centre or using another name “that emphasizes the Rouge community” after the neighbourhood is consulted on this. The motion passed, narrowly. Executive director Girmalla Persaud said she would take the name-changing request to the MFRC board and membership, but said the agency is proud of helping Malvern improve as a community. “We would be giving up a lot of our reputation,” if the name Malvern were removed, she said. The non-profit group, however, maintained it already had a history of serving the area around its proposed new location. Sheridan Cyrus. a board member, said MFRC had enroled 198 families from the immediate neighbourhood in programs. “Basically the people that we’re serving are the residents,” he said.

Cyrus and Persaud said the new centre would house Ontario Early Years programs, MFRC’s Women’s Place and senior’s programs. Youth and other seniors’ programs will continue at a Nielson Road location, and after-school programs will also stay where they are, they said. The building would be evenly split between program space, a gymnasium (open to neighbours who sign up) and office space for 25 staff. As a neighbourhood amenity, it will bring property values up and its activities will strengthen families and make the neighbourhood safer, said Cyrus. MFRC representatives said they had looked unsuccessfully for any alternative site and that a $800,000 provincial grant for the building, which could cost $4 million, must be used by March 21, 2013. “I don’t think there will be a lot of people coming from outside the community,” Persaud said to some audience laughter. Residents stuck to the argument the proposed building would be in the wrong place. Mistry said there are fears for safety in the area after MFRC moves in. Raymond Cho, the local councillor, said he faced a difficult decision because the MFRC “has done excellent work.” Cho, however, said he opposed the application because of the community’s opposition, his feeling the location was wrong and concerns the resource centre would contribute to the risk of local flooding. Later, he was one of only two councillors voting against the application.

Building height limit of four storeys set for Highland Creek MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Lowrise heights and “country character” appear to be the future Scarborough councillors want for Highland Creek Village. For two years, planners, property owners and residents of surrounding neighbourhoods studied the 24-acre village, where vacant lands had drawn interest from developers. The resulting Highland Creek Village Study proposed midrise mixed-use buildings, ranging up to 11 storeys on two corner parcels on Kingston Road, or Highway 2A. After most residents rejected it in April, planners pared down maximums on the village main street to three storeys, eight storeys in the “south village” area to six and six-

storey maximums to four. They also lowered the parcels with 11-storey maximums to eight storeys. It wasn’t enough at a second meeting last month to satisfy most village neighbours, who chanted in favour of a four-storey maximum anywhere in the village. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser agreed, and this week, a special evening session of Scarborough Community Council passed “what was wanted by the community” by amending the study to Moeser’s specifications. “We’re there to listen to our community,” the councillor said later, adding he and his staff called 80 people who attended the April meeting to understand what they felt. “Overwhelmingly, people said,

‘It’s a village. We want you to help maintain its character,’” he said. Moeser said that though there was a range of opinion “90 per cent” said they wanted no buildings taller than four storeys. Moeser included one exception, a parcel at Military Trail and Highway 2A the amended study says could be as tall as six storeys, “because it’s somewhat isolated from the village” and many local seniors believe condominium housing for seniors could be built there, the councillor said. Planners who wrote the study had warned lower heights may not be defensible if developers appealed proposals to the Ontario Municipal Board, and benefits that could from development - a village park, for example, and new street signs and

light standards - would be impossible without a certain level of density. Moeser said he hopes most benefits foreseen in the study will come anyway. Some residents and business owners had argued the village needs development to reverse years of decline. A letter written last week by Stephen Miles, president of the Highland Creek Commuity Association, described the village’s main street as “pitiful” and urged councillors to pass the area study as it was, arguing “the lack of a clear document outlining the requirements for building in our area works to our disadvantage.” While changes to the village may be scary to some residents, “I would argue that allowing our village to continue to stagnate and fall to

pieces is equally as scary and detrimental for us all,” Miles said. In contrast, a letter from Jeff Forsyth, president of the Centennial Community and Recreation Association south of the village objected to eight-storey maximums for buildings nearest his community as being contrary to Highland Creek’s “country feel.” Because the village is close to the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, “the proposed plan could lead to an oversaturation of student housing,” Forsyth added. The study will go to Toronto Council for approval later this month, and a transportation study will soon begin to examine possible changes in the village’s road network. It is expected to take more than a year to complete.

Tie transit to casino plan D

iscussions swirling around a potential Toronto casino have focused mostly on location, social ills and potential revenue-sharing in the multi-millions of dollars. All valid talking points; however, the business of transit when it comes to a casino in the city – downtown or elsewhere – is a discussion that must be had. And now is the time to do it. Think outside the proour view verbial box and consider all options, and how to stimulate Casino proposals economic growth. raise concerns In March, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming about congestion Corporation (OLG) announced two opportunities for casinos in Toronto – one in OLG’s C1 zone, which encompasses downtown Toronto, and another in a C2 zone, which encompasses parts of north Etobicoke. Most of the talk has been on the downtown option, including locating a casino at Exhibition Place or revamping the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Congestion would be a major issue at either of these locations, making life for anyone travelling in and out of the city core, most notably residents in both areas, even harder than it is today. Talk of a downtown relief line or expediting light rail construction becomes essential if the downtown core – and all ways in – are further congested with potentially hundreds of buses and thousands of cars. The other option in north Etobicoke could be at Woodbine Racetrack, expanding Woodbine’s operations into a full-service casino on its 680-acre site at Hwy. 27 and Rexdale Blvd., as expressed by Jane Holmes, vice-president of corporate affairs at Woodbine Entertainment Group, during a recent meeting of Etobicoke-York Community Council. But a location in north Etobicoke, where public transit is limited, raises congestion concerns as well as other transit issues – in particular, how to extend public transit to service those wanting to visit the casino, and the Rexdale community as a whole. It’s only through a strong transit plan that an Etobicoke location could hope to provide a revenue stream that could come close to a downtown site. This discussion shows how important to economic development – beyond commuter needs – a comprehensive transit plan is to Toronto. With GO Transit’s Georgetown South and Union Pearson Rail Link expansion, the idea that transit can flow to a proposed casino becomes far more possible. A multi-pronged approach to transit – considering economic benefits as well as expanding the viability of areas of the city now segregated – should be part of the city’s transit vision. To the editor: My daughter Jackie lives in Hamilton County, Ohio, and campaigned diligently for President Barack Obama. My daughter was born and raised in Scarborough and attended Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute. She began taking an interest in politics under my influence, since much was wrong in U.S.A. and I wanted her to care about her future and my grandsons’ future in that country. I ensured my grandsons were entered in the Canadian embassy, that they have dual citizenship and that they are aware of their Canadian heritage. Both my grandsons are active in junior hockey in U.S. as well. It was indeed gratifying to see Obama win, knowing my daughter had a small part in his achieving that win. don’t want to brag, but I feel like I’ve got the world by the tail. Well, maybe not the world exactly. The tail I’ve got a hold of is kind of kind of furry for the world. It could belong to my brother and sister-in-law’s basset hound, Spot, for all I know. But I digress. The point is, I couldn’t be better. Ever since November began, everybody keeps tossing compliments my way. Hey Jamie, looking good. Did you just get back from a long vacation? Hey Jamie, what’s that swagger all about? Are you seeing somebody? Hey Jamie, what’s up with that extra bounce in your step? Have you been working out? Are you eating better? Are you getting more beauty sleep? Did you spring for a new wardrobe? Did you switch barbers? Did you join Hair Club For Men? Have you called Jenny? Have you emailed Jenny? Have you

tweeted Jenny? Did Justin Bieber just make you his Facebook friend? I’ve heard ’em all. Truth be told, there’s no mystery as to why November has gotten off on the right foot for me. I’m doing one thing differently these days than I used to do at this time of year. For the first time, I’m wearing Remembrance Day poppies that don’t fall off. When I put a poppy on now it stays put. Last year at this time I wrote a column about how frustrated I was about losing poppies all the time. It seemed as soon as I affixed one, it vanished into thin air. That has always troubled me. Not that I minded

buying new poppies, mind you. I know the money goes to a good cause. But I wanted the poppies to remain in place so I could show my support to veterans, their families and the families of fallen soldiers; to let them know just how much I appreciated the sacrifices they made for me and the rest of the country. I mentioned in that piece the many pointers I’d received from friends about how to keep poppies stationary and a lot of you out there kindly took the time to write me offering your advice. The tip you mentioned most often was replacing the poppy stick pin with a Canadian flag lapel pin. That was my fave, so that’s the one I chose. For all those who suggested it, I am truly grateful. It has worked like a charm. My poppy doesn’t miraculously disappear anymore after I hang up my jacket

in the closet. My poppy doesn’t dematerialize when I bump into somebody on a crowded bus, streetcar or subway. My poppy doesn’t automatically evaporate the moment the wind picks up. And it’s still on my hockey jersey after a little jostling in the corners. It even remains motionless on my T-shirt after I stand on my head doing yoga. My poppy can handle anything now, no sweat. It’s one tough cookie. And I couldn’t be happier. So world, basset hounds or whatever it is I thought I had by the tail – don’t feel bad. I still love you. CBSO concert to feature works by Johannes Brahms The Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) presents a concert featuring music by Johannes Brahms this Saturday night in Scarborough. The performance is the first subscription concert of the CBSO’s 2012-2013 season. Guest soloist for the evening will be Canadian pianist, Peter Longworth. The orchestra will accompany him in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto. Based in Toronto, Longworth is an acclaimed solo virtuoso performer, chamber musician and teacher in Canada and abroad. He has performed in North America and Europe including New York, Chicago, London, Montreal, and Nice, France. After intermission, the orchestra will perform Brahms’ Third Symphony. There will also be a Pre-Concert Talk by the CBSO’s Maestro Norman Reintamm about the evening’s music, composer and pianist. It begins at 7:15 p.m. The concert starts at 8 p.m., and takes place at the PC Ho Theatre in the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto on Sheppard Avenue just east of Markham Road. Sea Cadets specialize in sailing, seamanship, shipboard life, naval communications, power boat handling, boat repair, and marine engineering. I was honoured to present the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to Major Robert B. Firlotte (Retired) at his home on Friday, September 7, 2012. Nominated by the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Association via the National Council of Veterans Associations (NCVA), Mr. Firlotte was recognized for his service in the Second World War, the Korean War, and with the Battalion Association executive after retirement. Mr. Firlotte’s story is truly inspiring, and I was captivated by his account of parachuting into Germany in March of 1945. It is easy to understand why he was also an active member of the Living History Speakers Bureau at the Royal Canadian Legion, Highland Creek Branch 258. Mr. Firlotte also celebrated his 95th birthday on August 30, 2012. Congratulations Bob!
