No fewer than five sitting Scarborough MPPs (two of them provincial ministers) will take part in the conference on Saturday, Oct. 19, the 27th annual attempt to find solutions for topics of concern through “an open exchange of ideas.” John Tory, former Ontario Progressive Conservative Party

leader and chairperson of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, is the keynote speaker. The conference turns its attention this year to life in urban centres, tackling transportation congestion, youth unemployment and protection for home owners. Besides MPPs Bas Balkissoon, Brad Duguid, Mitzie Hunter, Tracy MacCharles and Soo Wong, participants include Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig and Shaun Chen, a Scarborough

Toronto households will be paying an average of $41 a year for the next 30 years, to build a subway in Scarborough. That’s just one of the impacts being felt, after Toronto Council voted Tuesday night to go ahead with the $3.2 billion replacement for the Scarborough RT despite a shortfall in provincial dollars and a slew of unanswered questions, laid out in a report from City Manager Joe Pennachetti. In his report, Pennachetti said that the conditions for Toronto Council’s approval of a subway as opposed to an LRT hadn’t been met. In particular, the provincial government hadn’t agreed to the $1.8 billion the city needs to balance the books. As well, Pennachetti said it was unclear what the impact of the increased ridership on the Bloor-Danforth line would be, and that likely it would mean that the downtown relief line, a currently unfunded project, would need to be built sooner. After an at-times intense debate, council decided to go ahead anyway, approving a 1.6 per cent property tax hike over

Although that number is considerably higher than the 0.25 per cent property tax hike that Mayor Rob Ford had said he was comfortable imposing, the mayor took the 24-20 vote in favour of the plan as a major victory. “I’m ecstatic,” Ford told reporters at the end of the daylong debate. “I don’t know if I can do a backflip – if I could, I would. This is a huge victory for the people of Scarborough. Expand work in priority neighbourhoods MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s “priority neighbourhoods” were born in 2005, a time of significant gun violence when the city’s politicians wanted, most of all, to help marginalized youth and improve community safety. Eight years after the Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy started shifting resources to Toronto’s inner suburbs, the strategy and where it spends money are about to change, though how much isn’t clear. Choosing which neighbourhoods should be the next set of “priorities” is no easy task, Chris Brillinger, executive director of social development, told people at a meeting in Scarborough. Strong Neighbourhoods concentrated on 13 “priority” areas inside Scarborough (Steeles-L’Amoureaux,

In eight years, more than 1,200 city and United Waybacked initiatives reached 50,000 youth and 38,000 other residents in those neighbourhoods, which were top-of-list in 2005 for violence, lower incomes, or lack of investment in community services, said Brillinger. The update, Strong Neighbourhoods 2020, will also reflect what residents, agencies and councillors said hasn’t worked, and “people were very mixed on the term ‘priority neighbourhood,’” including youth from those neighbourhoods, Brillinger said at the first “community conversation” on the strategy Oct. 3 at Cedarbrook Community Centre. The city, he said, also needs to measure progress in neighbourhoods chosen for investment – soon to be called neighbourhood improvement areas, or NIAs – in a way its

politicians and public can understand. The old list of “priority” neighbourhoods is expected to overlap with a new list of NIAs Toronto Council approves next year, but if a neighbourhood “is in a different place than in 2005” the city’s work there won’t suddenly stop, Brillinger assured participants at Cedarbrook. At one discussion table, Lee Soda, whose agency, the Agincourt Community Services Association, is involved in neighbourhood hubs the strategy built in Scarborough, was making an argument work needs to continue with residents in those neighbourhoods to break down their isolation and teach them why social acts such as voting are important. The city should expand the current work, not start from scratch, Soda said. Brillinger said city staff con-

sulted more than 80 researchers and planners before settling with the United Way on Urban HEART @Toronto, a checklist of neighbourhood health organized under Economic Opportunities, Social Development, Healthy Lives, Par ticipation in Decision Making and Physical Surroundings. Presented with this complex system, people were encouraged to rank one or more of these five “keys” as less important than the others. Abeer Ali, active in the neighbourhood association for Dorset Park, one of the 13, said a survey of 170 residents showed their number one issue is public safety, though food security (affordable groceries), employment and transportation are near the top.

Impact of Eglinton Crosstown LRT on community discussed at meeting Scarborough residents voiced the hope that the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit project will bring about better employment opportunities and stronger community ties at a recent meeting. Organized by The Scarborough Mirror and Toronto Public Librar y (TPL), the event held Oct. 3 at Kennedy/Eglinton Library gave residents the opportunity to discuss the $4.9 billion project currently under construction, which will eventually span 19-kilometres both under and along Eglinton Avenue when it is completed around 2020. Metrolinx is now working on the Crosstown’s western alignment portion and con-

struction will eventually start in Scarborough where the line will travel at street level east of Laird Avenue to Kennedy station via a dedicated median lane. The decision to build the Crosstown at-grade into Scarborough has created concerns for residents worried the project will tear up their streets and create congestion. But the introduction of light rail into an area historically planned for the automobile also creates opportunities for community-building said the Mirror’s editor-in-chief Peter Haggert. “This is a huge project across the city, but really it’s about the community and how a good transportation service can help grow it,” said Haggert, who also moderated

a panel discussion during the meeting. Community activist Victor Beausoleil was part of the three-person panel which included social services worker Luanne Rayvals and Metroland Media Toronto’s city hall reporter David Nickle. Beausoleil said it was crucial to ensure the Crosstown creates jobs in Scarborough, particularly for chronically under-served youth. “How do you leverage development projects like this to create economic opportunity for local residents?” asked Beausoleil. “What’s important for me is having residents engaged and making sure developers hire youth to boost local employment development.” Rayvals said the Crosstown

was an opportunity not just for creating a reliable connection between Scarborough and the rest of the city but also a way to encourage visitors to explore the community’s various cultural touchstones. “Our communities can become a destination, not just somewhere you go to pick up groceries, but a place where people come to see our festivals or to check out the beautiful landscapes,” said Rayvals, manager of the Working Women Community Centre’s Victoria Park hub and a resident of southwest Scarborough. Nickle said he had observed a growing sense of isolation particularly in under-served areas of Scarborough, which could be alleviated by having access to reliable transit. “This huge amalgamation

of the city that took place some 14 years ago is finally going to happen,” said Nickle. “Scarborough will be connected to Black Creek and North York in a way never seen before.” But Hart Avenue resident Masko Lai was skeptical the project would ever be completed as planned, having seen other Scarborough transit plans tossed around like so many political footballs. “What good comes to the community if someone comes in with a political agenda and says this is what will happen, and all the consultation and planning goes out the window?” said Lai. “There is no regard for transit plans which have been looked at for years. What have we gotten? The last station in Scarborough was built more

than 30 years ago.” Jim Richardson said he heard some interesting ideas during the meeting, which also involved a brainstorming session on community building involving the audience. “I think the event went very well and hopefully some of the pertinent points can be incorporated for the planning of the Crosstown so that Scarborough develops and creates jobs,” said Richardson. Building stronger neighbourhoods

he next chapter of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhood Strategy is about to be written and the city needs your input. The project saw the creation of 13 priority neighbourhoods – “hot spots of high need and low infrastructure” – and over eight years worked with the province and the United Way to try to improve the lives of residents through targeted investment. The program is now being re-evaluated and new Neighbourhood Improvement Area (NIA) designations may be in the works. A host of public meetings are being held across the city this month to help shape the program’s future. In particular, city staff wants your ideas on criteria used to select NIAs, what goals should be established, and how the city should track its success. We’ve always touted the importance of local engagement and this instance is no our view exception. If you live in one of the currently designated areas or live in an area you believe needs Residents’ concentrated investment, your input needed input will be the most valuable. It’s your experience that will help for strategy answer some of the most critical questions. For instance, are the previously designated priority neighbourhoods ready to stand on their own? It’s not clear yet whether any of these areas will remain on the NIA list. Community hubs, drop-in centres, youth programming and partnerships have been established, but is that enough to ensure self-sustainability? Residents need to speak up about the results they’ve seen – or not seen – at the grassroots level. As well, the groups that have been involved in transforming these neighbourhoods need to declare whether they feel they can continue their work on their own. If it happens that these neighbourhoods do remain on the list, it’ll beg the question as to why. The city should be transparent in explaining why certain communities may still need focused help, even after eight years of investment. Would that be evidence of a failure? A need to modify expectations? Redistribute funding? Besides garnering opinion and experiential data from the people the program is meant to help, the city also needs to learn from lessons of the past. Without a critical self-evaluation of the project’s previous eight years, the story of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhoods will be a short one with an ending that disappoints. Have your say. Work on Toronto’s Expo 2025 bid will benefit city

ost in the debate about Toronto Pan Am Games executives claiming trivial expenses, outrage over high salaries and potential cost over-runs, is the basic question of why we bid on these events in the first place. It’s a debate that the federal government wants to limit, since it plans to withdraw Canada from the organizing body for Expos. On the other hand, advocacy groups readily spring up and attract sponsors across the spectrum. Few public issues are more passionately debated as to whether Toronto ought to participate at all. If they ever existed, days are long gone when a city bid for an event solely on principle or by a love of amateur sport. Instead, cities see these spectacles as a means to attract tourists, differentiate themselves and obtain infrastructure. Toronto’s history of

david soknacki beyond the headlines five failures to win the Olympics is instructive. At the time of our first bid in 1960, cities were not the economic centres they have now become. Toronto has become a powerhouse, representing 40 per cent of provincial and 20 per cent of national economic output. At the same time it sends the vast majority of its tax income outside its borders, yet is called upon to expand its services. Like other cities, Toronto sees the huge revenues surrounding these events as an opportunity to claw back some of its taxes. But so does everyone else. That’s why organizers usually require senior governments to guarantee deficits. It’s why the provincial government is vigilant. And probably why the federal government

wants Canada to leave the group that could select Toronto as host for the 2025 Expo. At present, Toronto has quite an effort underway to seek the bid. Our mayor has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as have dozens of stakeholder groups, across the political spectrum. They point out that the event will have a positive economic impact for Toronto, and their responsibility for costs. It might not matter. The federal government probably sees Toronto’s bid in terms of political and financial downsides, without the benefit of winning seats. But even though our bid organizers have the double obstacles of our federal government, and then the body which awards the site, we ought not to stop in our efforts. Part of working through a bid is an incredibly detailed review of our strengths and challenges.

It was during the bid for the 2008 Olympics that the organizing committee observed how much better we could be using our waterfront. Although we lost the bid, Torontonians recognized the need for greater investment in our shoreline, and created Waterfront Toronto, which has guided development since. Other cities have taken the same approach. Amsterdam, for example, is creating a bid for the Olympics in which the crowning achievement might be the games. If not, the preparations are useful as a valuable assessment of the city. So wish those volunteers well who are trying to achieve Expo 2025 for Toronto. Their work is important, even if in the end they cannot deliver the Expo itself.

A tribute to MPPs need to set priorities a special lady To the editor: My dear friend and former work colleague passed away recently. Kathy Scott was an amazing woman. She worked at the food bank in West Hill for more than 20 years. Her background was fashion design and in her spare time she made beautiful wedding dresses and all make of clothing. She had so many very special skills. She could make a great roti or cheese cake. She could do flower arranging. She would sway gracefully around the floor when she danced at the office Christmas party, but most of all she was a people person with an amazing ability to understand, relate to and help anyone in need. I will never forget how she communicated with a woman who spoke no

English or the time she made a special corsage for a graduating teenager who otherwise would not have had one for her new dress. She was always there to help anyone who needed a bowl of soup or a place to live. The last few years have been really tough for her due to illness but she is finally at rest. Thank you for all your hard work. You are now at peace dear friend. You have it well earned. They’re special instruments used in surgeries at the hospital. Toronto tops Austin for weird

ne thing that Mayor Rob Ford’s trip to Austin should have confirmed to our Lone Star cousins last week: when it comes to keeping a town weird, the musicallyinclined Texans are a few steps behind Toronto. No doubt, as the mayor left the city limits with his entourage of music-industry leaders and councillors, Austin breathed a sigh of relief. Because when they say “Keep Austin Weird,” they mean a nice kind of weird. Toronto and the saga of Mayor Rob Ford has reached a level of weird that is rather more terrifying. News broke just before he left town for Austin that a close friend of Mayor Ford, Sandro Lisi, was arrested and charged with possession and trafficking of marijuana. The mayor addressed the matter at a news conference at a filling station near his home, in which he described Lisi as “a good guy” and a friend, before heading off to the

david nickle the city airport. While the mayor was gone, a story came out suggesting Toronto police have been following Mayor Ford and his associates using a leased Cessna. His brother, Doug Ford, told a Toronto Sun columnist that he had spoken to two Toronto police superintendents, who’d confirmed that there was aerial surveillance going on. Doug Ford then recanted the next day and suspected that the mayor’s enemies were behind it all. I worry about commenting on all this in a column filed early, for fear that something even weirder turns up in the interim. Because that’s how things have been going for the Ford brothers. This time last year, the mayor’s biggest problems were football, looming conflict of interest charges, and issues of reading while

driving, and all that seemed weird enough. Now, it’s substance abuse allegations, alleged family connections to the westend drug trade, and that alleged video where the mayor was seen appearing to smoke crack cocaine. Men photographed with the mayor have been stabbed and murdered. Weirder still are the many among us who believe that all of this is simply a conspiracy of downtown elite, police and big media, to bring down a Conservative, millionaire mayor who is at the core, just an average guy. It’s hard to imagine a trade mission from the delusional Wonderland that Toronto has become, exciting anything in its hosts beyond a desire to back away slowly without making any sudden movements. With weirdos like us, you can’t be too careful.

Owner Gisela, who shopped at Agincourt Mall as a child, is proud to offer the community personal, attentive care which keeps customers coming back year after year — even those who have moved outside of the city. The expanding selection of organic and gluten free products like nuts, seeds, flours as well as sugar free candies are meeting the needs of today’s consumers, as are the special orders. “If a customer can’t find something like a special herb we try to locate it and order it in for them,” says Gisela. New fleet of articulated buses unveiled by TTC RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC has officially introduced the first of its new fleet of articulated buses. The new 60-foot “artic” seats 77 and can hold a maximum of 112 passengers, which represents a 45 per cent increase in capacity compared to the regular fleet of 40-foot buses. It is also fully accessible with a ramp and offers three-door boarding. The Nova-manufactured buses also have a built-in safety feature to cap turning speeds automatically. The articulated buses will first be deployed on the 7 Bathurst route during peak-travel times as of December 2013, followed by 29 Dufferin in the New Year, said TTC CEO Andy Byford. “We will roll the buses out one-by-one by the end of year first onto Bathurst and 29 Dufferin, and then some more of our busiest streets, and I think customers will notice the difference,” said

during mid-day and evening peak travel times. That represents a reduction in the number of buses currently on the route, which will mean longer wait times. TTC service planning manager Bill Donovan said it was necessary to run less of the articulated buses due to their immense size. Besides Bathurst and Dufferin, the articulated buses are scheduled for deployment

on five additional bus routes in 2014. They are 36 Finch West, 63 Ossington, 6 Bay, 85 Sheppard East and the 53 Steeles Express. A total of 153 artics were ordered by the TTC and all of them are expected to be in service by January 2015. A memorial bicycle installed in Riverside in honour of Jack Layton won’t be removed any time soon. A online petition circulated after a city notice of removal was spotted on the white painted bicycle in front of the NDP’s leader’s former Broadview Avenue constituency office towards the end of September. But after consulting with city staff, local councillor Paula Fletcher announced the bike will remain at the site until plans for a permanent memorial are finalized. The bicycle, inscribed with messages from the community, was installed following Layton’s death from cancer in 2011.

Transactions rise by a third over 2012 residential sales Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 7,411 residential sales through the TorontoMLS system in September 2013, representing a 30 per cent increase compared to 5,687 transactions reported in September 2012. Year-to-date, total residential sales reported through TorontoMLS amounted to 68,907 during the first nine months of 2013 – down by one per cent compared to the same period in 2012. “It’s great news that households have found that the costs of home ownership, including mortgage payments, remain affordable. This is why the third quarter was characterized by renewed growth in home sales in the GTA,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher. “We expect to see sales up for the remainder of 2013, as the pent-up demand that resulted from stricter mortgage lending guidelines continues to be satisfied.” The average selling price for September

transactions was $533,797 – up by 6.5 per cent year-over-year. Through the first three quarters of 2013, the average selling price was $520,118 – up by over four per cent compared to the first nine months of 2012. The MLS Home Price Index composite benchmark for September was up by four per cent year-over-year. The annual rate of growth for the composite benchmark has been accelerating since the spring of 2013. “The price growth story in September continued to be about strong demand for low-rise home types, coupled with a short supply of listings,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “Even with slower price growth and month-to-month volatility in the condo apartment market, overall annual price growth has been well above the rate of inflation this year. This scenario will continue to play out through the remainder of 2013.” – TREB

Students work to improve safety for teenage drivers Grade 12 students Colin Goad and Melissa Tigert are well aware great strides need to be made to improve teen driver safety. For that reason, the students are serving as student ambassadors for a new campaign by not-for-profit safety organization Parachute and State Farm insurance to create a national Teen Driver Safety Week.

G oad and Tiger t are among a small number of teen ambassadors for the campaign under Parachute’s nation-wide Project Gearshift initiative. “We want to address youth driving safety because (unsafe driving) is the No. 1 killer of youth right now in Canada,” Goad said. “Here in Toronto, because it’s such an urban centre, we want to focus spe-

cifically on pedestrian safety and try to avoid pedestrian collisions.” The Northern Secondary School students, in collaboration with Northern’s SMARTRISK team, have been conducting pedestrian blitzes and other events to address safety on and around the streets of Toronto. One such event, dubbed Pause for Applause, saw

students actually go out and cheer pedestrians who used crosswalks instead of crossing at unsafe points. “Jaywalking’s one of the most prevalent issues, especially in Toronto, but we also want to talk to people about distracted driving – texting or calling people while you drive,” Tigert said. The push for a Teen Driver Safety Week is also well

underway in Alberta and New Brunswick, with Goad and Tigert carrying the torch for Ontario as two of six national ambassadors. State Farm is looking to get more schools involved in the project through Celebrate My Drive (www.celebratemydrive.com), with participating schools eligible to win cash prizes. In Toronto, Goad and Tigert

are looking to spread the word among not only their high school but others as well. Tigert noted the key is to get the word out to as many people as possible, adding the feedback they have received has been promising so far.

Stormwater ponds full of sediment mIKE AdlER madler@insidetoronto.com Many stormwater ponds in Toronto are so full of sediment they are nearly useless in controlling floods and keeping pollution out of city waterways, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority was told recently. The City of Toronto has 63 ponds collecting storm runoff but their management is a growing concern, since many “have never been maintained or dredged, and many are nearing or have reached their maximum sediment capacity,” said a staff report to the Authority’s board. Seeking the TRCA’s expertise, the city has formed a partnership which should see the Authority clean out seven “priority” stormwater ponds identified in Scarborough and High Park. Two ponds “currently at capacity for sediment volume” in Scarborough – Sisters of St. Joseph Pond, northwest of St. Clair and Warden avenues, and Lansing Pond, off William Kitchen Road southeast of Kennedy Road and Hwy. 401 – are expected to be drained, dredged and restored before the end of this year. The city’s cost for just these two cleanouts could be $740,000, but the report said actual prices “may vary greatly, because disposal costs depend heavily on the levels of contamination found within each pond.” Dredged sediment is expected to be dried on each site before being trucked away. Public consultations are expected next year on cleaning out three High Park ponds which are on the priority list, the Upper and Lower Spring Creek Ponds, Lower Duck Pond and Wendigo Pond. The other priority ponds in Scarborough are Centennial Pond, and Upper L’Amoureaux Pond. Apart from the projects at Sisters of St. Joseph and Lansing, the Authority said it may consider alternatives to mechanical dredging if they are suitable.

When he finally rose to speak, Councillor Ford was similarly blunt. “Well folks, it really comes down to this. Either you’re planning transportation for just 30 years and we’re going to destroy the city like we destroyed St. Clair, or you’re going to be visionaries,” he said, referring to the St. Clair streetcar project, which went dramatically over budget and the Fords believe to be a transportation failure. Budget chief Frank Di Giorgio also tried to convince council to spread the property tax increase out over more years, pushing the larger increases into the next term of council. But councillors didn’t support that, instead going with the property tax increase that Pennachetti recommended. Mayor Ford maintained that it might still be possible to reduce that property tax increase, if the city is able to attract private sector partnerships. The decision will also mean that Toronto will use up much of its debt capacity. Opponents of the plan pointed out doing so will make it difficult if not impossible for the city to look after other infrastructure needs over the next 30 years. “We’ve found ourselves borrowing a billion dollars, paying $40 million of interest annually for 30 years, to buy a subway that didn’t need to be built,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis. We won’t have to take the SRT out of service, we’ll have continuous service from Kennedy (for the course of construction).” As well, she said, it would help build a network of transit more effectively in Scarborough.

Poverty reduction work far from complete, local meeting told MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Seeking to renew its Poverty Reduction Strategy, Ontario’s government has been asking Scarborough residents picked by local agencies what it has done right and what should change. So far, those discussions have been behind closed doors.

After one such session at the Immigration Resource Centre on Midland Avenue on Oct. 4, though, ScarboroughGuildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter said there was acknowledgement progress has been made but also that the government must do more. “We know that we can’t solve the whole thing. It’s a complex challenge,” said

Hunter, elected in August and now parliamentary secretary to Community and Social Services Minister John Sweeney. People in the room, which included other Scarborough MPPs and city councillors, had shown a “tremendous willingness to work together” on ways to reduce poverty, Hunter added. “ What’s important is we see the path

forward.” The Liberal government Hunter just joined passed the Poverty Reduction Act in 2009 intending to reduce the number of Ontario children in poverty by 25 per cent in five years. Its consultation booklet admits it is now “unlikely” to meet this goal, “in large part because of the global recession,” but the govern-

ment claims 15.9 per cent of children would have been poor without the strategy in 2011, compared to 13.6 per cent who actually were. The government is now asking if the focus of its antipoverty effort – based on the Ontario Child Tax Benefit, all-day kindergarten and more grants and loans for post-secondary students – should change. A Scarborough MPP has introduced a private member’s bill to get tougher on distracted drivers following

a fatal crash in his riding this summer. Bas Balkissoon (Scarborough-Rouge River) said he wants to change the Highway Traffic Act by increasing the fine for dis-

tracted driving from the current $155 to $300 to $700 and assign three demerit points to the offence. The Manoranjana Kanagasabapathy Act will be debated in the legislature on

Oct. 31. Kanagasabapathy, 52, died on Aug. 13 when the TTC bus she had just boarded was struck by a commercial truck on Steeles Avenue at Middlefield Road. A dozen others were hurt. The truck driver was charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation causing death, two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and one count of dangerous operation. “At the time the driver of the truck was believed to be on the cellphone,” Balkissoon alleged during a news confer-

ence at Queen’s Park yesterday. “It is clear that stricter penalties are required to deter this. As Ontarians we must stand together to protect other victims and families from this preventable devastation.” Balkissoon said a driver using a cellphone is four times more likely to be in a crash than one who is focussed on the road. He added that distracted driving is cited as a causal factor in more than 30 per cent of collisions in the province. Kanagasabapathy’s brother Kandiah Kanagarajah said Balkissoon’s legislation is overdue and called on more

enforcement on the roads. “Right now, the fines are not significant...not able to change people’s behaviour,” he said. “We can’t afford to lose any more lives to this epidemic.” Kanagarajah described his sister as a kind and lovable person. She left behind two grown children and a granddaughter. “She was holding the whole family together like glue,” Kanagarajah said. Balkissoon said he hopes his non-partisan bill will receive all-party support.

Man, 83, killed crossing Steeles An 83-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car while crossing Steeles Avenue at Turff Avenue, east of Kennedy Road, Tuesday, night. Police said the pedestrian

was crossing mid-block when a westbound Toyota Corolla struck him around 9:15 p.m. The senior was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Steeles was closed for several hours as police investigated. Anyone with information is asked to call the Toronto police traffic services unit at 416-808-1900.

Carr sets sights on world baseball championships SEAN DURACK active@insidetoronto.com Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts Grade 10 student Emma Carr has just wrapped up a remarkable baseball season, competing first for Team Alberta at the national bantam championships then representing Canada in a friendly series against Japan. Carr stood in for Alberta at the nationals after the Team Ontario II squad she was initially named to was prohibited from playing in the tournament. Team Ontario “was hoping to send a second Ontario team which Emma would have been on, but there was a conflict with Baseball Canada and the Ontario Baseball Association, so the team couldn’t play,” explained her father, Murray Carr. “There were spaces on EMILY CARR the Alberta team so the coach contacted Emma and asked her if she would play.” Carr, who played mostly with the boys over the years with Wexford-Agincourt Baseball League, helped Alberta win a bronze medal at the Senior Women’s Invitational Championships in Granby, QC, this summer. Also in Granby, Baseball Canada was putting the finishing touches on naming two Canadian Senior Women’s teams competing in the Canada-Japan Women’s Baseball Series, a friendly series. The squad was short players and asked if Carr would consider remaining in Granby for the following week. Her team performed better than the second Canadian entry, going on to win the silver medal with Carr batting in three runs on three hits in the nine-games series. “(She was) thrilled, awe-struck, dumbfounded, all the above,” said Murray on his daughter’s thoughts initially on being asked to play in the Japan series. “We definitely weren’t expecting it. She was home for a week before it finally sunk in.” Carr then went on to represent Ontario at thenational championships in Bedford, NS, where the 15 year old accumulated another eight runs in seven games. She also tallied six RBIs. Carr has made the bantam national team cut three years in a row and was the youngest player on all three squads this summer. Her father can take some credit for her baseball

prowess. No, there is no baseball in the Carr bloodline, but he does remember often entertaining the then four year old during her older brother’s baseball games. The two would play catch along the sidelines. Carr, a left fielder who started playing T-ball at age five in Scarborough, has fond memories of those early days playing catch with her dad. “I really got interested in the sport because my brother was playing and I wanted to play too,” she said. That she had to play with the boys at WexfordAgincourt Baseball League was, in retrospect, another positive. “Being the only girl on my team, going to tryouts was always hard. I was the outcast, but I loved the sport so I didn’t really pay attention to it. I just said I’m here to play the game I love.” Last summer has put into perspective Carr’s future with the sport. “It kind of sets up the next few years of my life,” she said, noting because women’s baseball isn’t recognized at the collegiate level at U.S. schools she would, at some point, have to consider shifting to softball if she’s hoping for a scholarship.
