The recipients honoured Monday night are “some pretty amazing Scarborough residents,” said Sheila Clark, The Mirror’s manager of digital properties, adding she was thrilled to find “no shortage of community members who deserve to have their stories of dedication told.” General Manager Marg Middleton said the annual awards dinner, “an uplifting
evening hearing about positive community accomplishments,” had become one of her favourite events of the year. “It’s about people who care about Scarborough and realize it’s the unselfish giving of time and effort that helps to build a better community,” she said at the Grand Baccus Banquet Hall in Agincourt. Twenty years ago, Lindy Wong followed her mother to the local park to do exercises outdoors. Now Wong and her husband Stephen Sung lead as many as 150 a day through two hours of exercise and dances in Milliken Park Community Recreation Centre. Scarborough’s newest Urban Heroes like what they do, and keep doing it because giving something back gives them satisfaction. “When you have a young person come back to you and say they remember something you said,” said Cleveland Clunis, “and they carry it, and it stuck with them and made a difference, that is a reward you can’t put any price on.” The founder of the East Toronto Basketball Association remembers when he was growing up in Scarborough, people in the community drove him to sports events and took time to coach him. Two young men with Clunis at the presentation of the 2013 Scarborough Mirror Urban Hero Awards now sit on a board consisting of past players who went to university (Clunis stresses achievement in academics as well as sports) and have returned to help. “The cycle continues, which is a great thing to see in the community,” he said.
students started programs of their own in Bangladesh and Kenya, sending Babli pictures and reports. “Just start small but think big, this is my philosophy,” she said. Rob Burridge, recognized for community work including at the East Scarborough Summer Festival Market on Lawrence Avenue, is a lifelong Scarborough resident who sees the local face of community involvement changing, but said the old spirit is still there. “As Scarborough’s growing, so is the need,” Burridge added before the ceremony. “I feel that I’m really fortunate, I’m lucky, and I feel that there are lots that are not.” For Joseph Gomez, the satisfaction of volunteering with the Squires youth group in southeast Scarborough comes from teaching boys of 10 to 18 leadership skills and how to increase their faith. “Seeing them be successful in school, in the community, it’s a blessing also. It makes you feel that you did your job,” said Gomez, adding seven squires in seven years have joined the local Knights of Columbus to carry on their work as adults. eadership is an important skill to acquire in life. However, many people, in particular youngsters in at-risk neighbourhoods do not have as many opportunities to gain those important skills. Thankfully the charitable organization Kids Now has taken up the challenge, offering an afterschool program where youth in grades 7 and 8 can empower themselves and gain confidence. Youth volunteer for the 12-week program and are paired with mentors who help drive home the importance of self-esteem, setting goals, communication, conflict resolution, and stress management. All skills are rooted in making the right choices in our view life, staying in school, and taking part in extra-curricuAfter-school lar activities and volunteerin the community. initiative benefits ingThe last point, though no entire community more special than the others, is one that speaks to how a strong community is created – by everyone being an active part of that community, which helps make that community a better place to live, work, and enjoy life. Kids Now mentors come from all walks of life including corporate employees, university students, and even former Kids Now participants. Kids Now is a chance for corporations, companies, Torontonians and even politicians to become mentors to youth. This is something that would not only help the lives of youth, but create a community, a city where people believe in themselves, which leads to believing in their city and the neighbourhoods they call home. The Kids Now program flourished in several schools in Toronto, in particular St. Luigi Catholic School where students raised funds for Meagan’s Walk, as well as supported a village in Kenya and ran a food and clothing drive to help the less fortunate. It is obvious that giving youth the right skills – leadership being just one – they will take up a challenge and become better citizens. It is now time for mentors of various stripes to help mould even more youth to become all they can be.

Police costs, efficiency need to be examined
T
he latest annual provincial report has just been released which compares services provided by Ontario cities. Generally, Toronto performs around the average. In some areas we do well, such as efficiently managing portfolios of public funds, having the highest percentage of parkland and maintaining the best roads (really!). Buried in the report is a comparison of policing services province-wide. For Torontonians, it is troubling. To begin, even on a perresident basis Toronto’s police service is expensive. We know it as the largest line item in the city budget by far. It is less well known that each Torontonian pays more for policing than almost any other Provincial resident. In return we have the second-highest number level of officers and staff per capita.
david soknacki beyond the headlines Unfortunately that high cost and number of officers does not produce satisfactory results. Our rate of crime is about average. Compared to other police, each Toronto officer handles the second lowest number of criminal code incidents. Nor is our force adept at catching criminals. Toronto’s police service has the lowest rate of solving violent crime, an unenviable record it has held for the last three years. There are excuses, reasons if you prefer, for the high cost and poor results. One can point to the unique nature of Toronto needs. It does cost extra to protect dignitaries, operate marine, mounted and canine units, and keep order at large events. Admittedly these special-
ized units are costly, but their expense is minor within the context of Toronto’s billion-dollar police budget. While it is easy to spot problems, turning the situation around is challenging, made more so by police board members not allowed to become involved in operational matters. Even so, there is still ample room for improvement. For example, the board has the authority to order a strategic plan and direction, something that it has not done for a generation. Such instructions, when done with public consultation, will go a long way in reasserting civilian control, giving direction and setting expectation levels. Although the annual budget is a crude tool for getting better value for police expenditures, limiting growth to the same targets set for other departments will at least allow
the city to lower costs. On its present path spending on police is not sustainable for our city, and produces results well below average. The third opportunity to directly impact policing will come in 2015 when it is time to renew the collective agreement. While negotiations from the public interest will be hampered by the limitations that arbitrators will put on reforms, it remains another chance to put our policing costs and expensive practices back into line. The value in the annual provincial report comparing municipalities lies far beyond using it as a scorecard. Instead it can be used to highlight issues that are more successfully addressed by our neighbours, and challenge us to create a better city. Shorework at Scarborough’s Meadowcliff bluff completed
hockey talk
Residents should take care accessing portions of the Bluffs MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Years of shoreline construction are now finished on another part of the Scarborough waterfront, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority wants people to know what it has built below the Bluffs. It also wants residents to be aware of the hazards if they walk on cobble beaches and paths that are officially a maintenance road, not a public park. The authority this fall completed beaches and headlands along 600 metres of shore west of the Bellamy Ravine (also called Gates Gully), except for plantings and cleanup operations it will do next year. This Meadowcliffe Drive Erosion Control Project was
built in front of the last section of Scarborough Bluffs that could have crumbled over time, dropping houses into Lake Ontario. Shoreworks now stretch in Scarborough from Bluffers Park Beach to the Rouge River, but only the Port Union sections, 3.8 kilometres from Rouge Beach to the mouth of Highland Creek, have been opened as a public park. 8.5 kilometres The other 8.5 kilometres is used nonetheless, mainly by local joggers and dog owners who know how to reach it from Guild Park or by a steep path down the gully from a parkette at Ravine Drive and Bellehaven Crescent. Connie Pinto, the authority’s senior project manager for the waterfront, said signs
next year should show waterfront visitors where the access points are, but also warn them of uneven surfaces, falling rocks or other risks. A sign and a chainlink fence already separate the Meadowcliffe works from Bluffers at a point some people managed to cross this summer when the water level was lower, a “very risky thing to do,” Pinto said this week. The authority is “still in conversation” with the City of Toronto about contributions toward completing the waterfront trail in Scarborough, a goal it was estimated in April could cost $70 million or more over 15 years.

The railway underpass and retaining wall on Sheppard Avenue east of Kennedy Road has caused problems for St. Timothy’s Anglican Church. Scarborough Community Council recently approved a temporary traffic light for the church to help those attending deal with what has become an unsafe turn.
Traffic light approved for St. Timothy’s Church Hazard ‘that the city introduced’ must be corrected: Councillor Chin Lee MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
S
carborough councillors say the City of Toronto should pay for new traffic signals - and for removing those signals a few years later - because a flawed GO Train overpass creates dangerous conditions at a Sheppard Avenue intersection. “It’s a hazard that we introduced, that the city introduced. We need to correct this,” Chin Lee, who represents the area around Lamont Avenue and Sheppard, told Scarborough Community Council at its meeting last Thursday. Lamont is a dead-end street east of a $30-million
GO Train overpass completed on Sheppard last year. After the work finished, worshippers and others going to St. Timothy’s Anglican Church and its two halls by the intersection complained the overpass’s pedestrian railings and raised sidewalk blocked the view of drivers turning out of Lamont. Community councillors responded by banning left turns and through movements across Sheppard at the intersection, but also ordered a traffic study to test arguments the signals are needed. City staff in spring did $15,000 worth of studies on days when the church buildings hosted services
or social events, but their measurements - traffic volume, delay to cross traffic and recorded collisions - show signals weren’t justified. U-turn It’s the city’s position drivers turning right from Lamont can edge out into a lay-by lane for buses to merge with eastbound traffic, and should be able to perform a U-turn at Midland Avenue to go west on Sheppard. “We are not putting people at undo risk here,” said Marko Oinenen, Scarborough traffic operations manager, adding the TTC and provincial Metrolinx transit agency
don’t want signals at the intersection because that will slow down the planned Sheppard East light-rail line. Rev. John Stephenson of St. Timothy’s Anglican, however, said the intersection is unsafe, and every driver and pedestrian who goes there knows it. Years of construction damaged the century-old church building and its parking lot – for which St. Timothy has hired lawyers – before the overpass design was seen to block sight lines for drivers and pedestrians. The city’s “deeply flawed” traffic study doesn’t deal with the safety problems, while Metrolinx has washed its hands of the matter,
Stephenson said. “They built the underpass to the specifications they were given, so it’s not their problem.” Church members described close calls at the intersection and predicted serious accidents without the signals. “As a woman of faith, I pray daily no one is hurt or killed,” said a statement by Sheila Martin read at the meeting. Oinenen said the set of signals would cost at least $150,000, and the delayed LRT project, scheduled to start “in 2017 or so,” would require them to be removed at a cost of perhaps $75,000, perhaps to install a different quarter-signal which only faces eastbound traffic.
Scarborough councillors, however, saw no alternative after Oinenen said the bridge railings could not be changed, and the danger couldn’t be fixed by adding mirrors at the corner or a traffic island in what is now a hazard lane on Sheppard east of the overpass. Some councillors said they have tried themselves to turn out of Lamont and agree there is a danger. “Frankly, I found that scary,” Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly added. Lee’s motion for “interim” signals passed unopposed, but must still be confirmed at Toronto Council next month.

Scarborough protesters call for hike in minimum wage MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
winter shoes, winter clothes. It’s quite expensive.” Moses and others who gathered on Friday, Oct. 18 at the corner of Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue are placing their hopes in a province-wide campaign to raise the wage to $14. Chanting “Decent earning, decent living,” and “No more poverty wages,” members of the group walked south on Kennedy to a Tim Hortons, where they lined up along the drive-through lane. A minimum wage of $14 an hour won’t make much difference to the bottom lines of corporations, argued Regini David of West Scarborough Community Legal Services, one of the rally organizers. Ram Alexander, who carried a sign in Tamil, said he has spent the last 17 years working for minimum wage in Toronto, often at two or three jobs in restaurants and factories. His wife and four children in Madurai, India look to him for money – they, like him, had to leave Sri Lanka as refugees – but there’s never enough left over. Alexander said he’s had to move many times because he couldn’t pay the rent, and he’s struggled with
Don’t Lena Moses and her husband deserve a raise? The Scarborough couple both work full time, but still can’t afford winter clothes for themselves or their two children, Moses said during a mid-day rally in Scarborough recently to support raising Ontario’s minimum wage. Before arriving from Sri Lanka in 2010, she was an administrative secretary. Here, she found assembly work in a factory for the adult minimum of $10.25 an hour and is now a receptionist for a law firm, which recently increased her hourly pay to $11. Her husband works in the kitchen of a restaurant and is paid $10.25 an hour. It’s hard to live on such wages. After paying rent and the TTC, there’s not much left for groceries and everything else, said Moses, whose family has gotten by so far wearing clothing donated by friends. They still don’t have anything suitable for the colder months, she said. “When winter comes you need
Supporters of the Scarborough Anti-Poverty Coalition rally at Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue Friday afternoon calling on the provincial government to raise minimum wage in Ontario to $14 per hour.
depression. He hasn’t seen his family since arriving in Canada and his low earnings make sponsoring them here impossible, he said. “I am very, very hardworking. I am very tired.” With $14 an hour, Alexander said, he can at least afford to eat and live, and maybe send a little money to his family.
Ontario’s Liberal government has raised the minimum wage from $6.85 since 2003, and has appointed a Minimum Wage Advisory Panel which will report this winter on the wage and how it should be set in future. Ontario and British Columbia are the only Canadian provinces without a formal way of setting the minimum
wage, which the campaigners want tied to inflation. They are asking anyone interested to attend a 7 p.m. public meeting on the subject on Nov. 5 at R. H. King Academy, a high school at St. Clair Avenue and Kingston Road. Patrick O’Neill, who said he worked as a security guard for minimum wage until he became disabled, said people should send Premier Kathleen Wynne and Scarborough MPPs the message they need $14 an hour. “We know we are determined and we will not give up,” he said. A man walking by the Tim Hortons disagreed with the marchers. “Are you on drugs?” he asked Guled Arale, a student activist from University of Toronto Scarborough. Arale said the man’s argument, that a $14 minimum wage would drive businesses from Ontario, was wrong. The minimum wage has been frozen for more than two years, and with TTC fares, tuition and other costs increasing, it’s getting harder for working students to support themselves, he said.

Bike lanes roll into election issue
J
ust in time for the 2014 municipal election, it looks like Toronto Council is going to be talking big bike lanes again. This week, Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee voted to re-start the environmental assessment of bike lanes along Bloor Street – a route that is both a practical goal and symbolic grail for Toronto cycling advocates. It should also send a shiver up the spine of any regular downtown bicycle commuter. Just about four years ago, cycling advocates convinced the council at the time to put bike lanes on Jarvis Street, and nearly got a separated bike lane pilot project on University Avenue too. The Jarvis bike lane was good for cyclists, but better for politicians willing to stir up anger over what they characterized as those cyclists’ sinister and overweening ambitions. There wasn’t much consensus in the 2010
david nickle the city mayoralty race, but nearly everyone agreed that there was a war on, that war was against “the car,” and Jarvis Street was its battleground. And so it was that the new council voted to pull the lanes out and widen the road again, against the wishes of the local councillor and community. As an afterthought a year later, council ordered the city to stop studying that other big bike lane project along Bloor Street. And now, it is on the verge of starting up again, and from a transportation planning point of view, it makes a great deal of sense. The city is studying a bikeway along Dupont and Bloor. What happens there affects what happens on Bloor and vice versa. And it’s not for nothing that Bloor is such a grail for bike nuts. All the public transit along Bloor is below ground, which means
cyclists need contend neither with buses nor streetcar tracks, and it crosses many pedestrian- and bike-friendly communities already. It’s hard to see how pushing along with even an environmental assessment now will result in anything but a push-back from what has previously shown itself to be a powerful anti-bike sentiment in a large part of the electorate. This is not to say that bike commuters should despair and the city should shelve what is a good plan. A Bloor Street bike lane’s a good idea — just as it would be to extend the bike lanes back east along the Danforth. It would make the city safer, greener, and maybe even a bit more physically fit as commuters saw an option in biking. But wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t also fuel the kind of divisive politicking that burned so bright in 2010?

Colour-coded bus stop markings and a streamlined network map introduced in the last year could be removed in as little as two months. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said no decision has been made whether to preserve the designs currently seen along the 94 Wellesley bus route since being placed there on a pilot basis in February. Ross suggested some elements of the designs could be incorporated into a proposed system-wide wayfinding strategy, which was to be unveiled to the public at the TTC’s monthly board meeting on Wednesday. truths about transit report wHard
An advisory panel tasked by Premier Kathleen Wynne to look at a list of transit revenue tools proposed by Metrolinx released its first of three planned reports this week. On Monday, the 13-member panel published Hard Truths about Transit, which dispels what it calls oft-mentioned transit “misconceptions,” such as the notion subways are the
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT only worthwhile transportation infrastructure investment. The panel, which includes Mayor Rob Ford’s former subway funding plan architect Gordon Chong, must report back to Wynne in December with final recommendations. To read the report, go to www.transitpanel.ca to hear noise wall concerns wMinister
A campaign organized by the Junction Triangle Rail Committee has paid off after Transportation Minister Glen Murray reportedly agreed to hear the group’s concerns over a planned series of noise wall barriers. As reported last week by Metroland Media Toronto, the group called on its supporters to continuously phone Murray’s office demanding a face-to-face meeting to discuss an alternative to the noise wall designs proposed by Metrolinx for the GO Georgetown rail corridor.
The transit planning agency says the five-metre-high walls are required to reduce elevated levels of noise coming from diesel train traffic when the Union Pearson Express opens in two years. The meeting is scheduled to take place at Queen’s Park on Thursday, Oct. 31. TTC education campaign wnew
A public education campaign will launch across the TTC next year to encourage riders to offer up their seats to expectant mothers. The TTC will place advisory decals aboard all vehicles in support of the measure, which Ross said comes as a result of provincial accessibility requirements and not – as has been reported by some media outlets – a strategy to improve rider etiquette. Also planned is the future installation of blue seat inserts on all TTC vehicles designating priority seating.

>>>from page 1 residents who are commuting from the outer reaches of Scarborough to the subway,” Berardinetti said in a letter. The TTC is also closing a commuter lot at Ellesmere Road and Lawrence Avenue which has around 80 spaces, and is in talks with Build Toronto to divide and sell the 300-space commuter lot at Victoria Park Station for development, said the Scarborough Southwest councillor. There are also plans to sell the north commuter lot at Warden Station – a 600-space overflow for the south lot, which has 300 spaces – but
they are on hold “now that the full extent of the impact” of closing the other lots is known, Berardinetti said. It is “essential” the TTC keep the lots open during construction of the LRT and the planned extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line, particularly because cars diverting from Eglinton onto St. Clair and Lawrence avenues will have a “severe” effect on local traffic, she said. At the recent community council meeting, Berardinetti called the loss of station parking a “major issue”, but moved to defer it until November, when a TTC representative
would be able to speak about it. The transit commission’s board, meanwhile, will see a report on Nov. 18, a day before the community council meets, on options for commuter parking across Toronto, said Vince Rodo, a TTC spokesperson. It is not clear whether the entire Kennedy lot must close, and the TTC will look at alternatives wherever spaces disappear, including temporary parking areas, Rodo said. “We want to leave as many spaces open at Kennedy as we can.”

Merger a distraction: coalition >>>from page 1 Ontario Health Coalition meeting in Malvern. The group says Scarborough’s two hospitals, after years of austerity budgets, both suffered deep cuts this year and are preparing between them to trim $28 million more in 2014. Johnson said people should think of “all the difficulties we will be facing” after these cuts take hold, how many jobs will be lost, and what the province and hospitals will do to cover gaps in services. “Are they going to increase the community (health) services, and if they do, how near will the community services be to you?” she asked. Fewer than 20 people climbed steps to a room above the gymnasium in Malvern Recreation Centre Tuesday night to hear the coalition’s message. That surprised Learie Charles, a Scarborough postal worker, who said it’s important for people in the area “to see this is their health care” under threat. Mushtaq Sayed, a local realtor, said he’s ready to help any way he can. Sayed and members of his mosque have contributed to cancer care and a new MRI machine at The Scarborough Hospital, but said he now finds service cuts there affecting his family directly. His father, for instance, needs surgery in both knees, but Sayed was told the surgeon must operate on one
knee at a time because of a cutbacks to operating room time and a new fee structure. That means instead of being able to recover fully in six months, his father’s ordeal will last 18 months. With decisions on a merger between TSH and Rouge Valley Health System coming next month, the coalition still considers the whole exercise “a distraction from the issue of service cuts,” according to the group’s director, Natalie Mehra. Instead, the coalition is set to protest the $28 million in looming “cuts” – actually a budget shortfall estimate the hospitals provided themselves, with another $20-million hole to fill projected in 2015 – by pressuring the province to bail out both Scarborough hospitals with extra cash. It’s either that, or change the current funding system for hospitals, which local hospital CEOs say has forced restructuring because while provincial support has “flatlined,” labour, equipment and other costs continue to rise. The hospitals have said no medical services would be moved between Durham and Scarborough, and that no hospital campus or emergency room will close as a result of the merger. The hospitals’ approval of a $1.1-million merger study next month will be a verdict only on a merger itself, and not program consolidations
that may result or the composition of a merged hospital board. Mehra suggested Ontario has cut its hospital spending, per person, “more deeply than any jurisdiction I could find,” so that it can keep tax cuts for corporations in place. The government wants to move services out of hospitals into community settings, so that care for patients can be refused or the cost paid partly by the patients themselves, she charged. Communities which refuse to accept cuts to their hospitals stemming from this “ideology of restructuring” have seen services returned, Mehra said. The group has announced a “day of action” on Saturday, Nov. 9, in which offices of five of the six Liberal Scarborough MPPs will be picketed (Pickering-Scarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles’ constituency office in Pickering is not on the list). Hospital union members are meeting at 7:30 Monday, Oct. 28, in Birkdale Co m m u n i t y Ce n t re o n Ellesmere Road and the coalition said other Scarborough meetings may be announced soon. The hospitals, meanwhile, have scheduled special meetings the public can attend on Nov. 12, at which merger study recommendations will likely be ratified.

he Guild Festival Theatre Group is being honoured for its efforts to bring arts and culture to everyone in Scarborough. This past summer, the group staged an exuberant open-air version of Molière’s The Misanthrope at the Greek Theatre in the Guild Gardens. The group has a mission to provide enrichment through entertainment and to help revitalize the historic Guild area and re-establish the Guild as a space for the arts to flour-
ish. Each summer since 2009, The Guild Festival Theatre has presented a high-profile theatre festival of classics on the Greek stage. Further, the Guild Festival Theatre Group seeks to nurture and inspire the artists and audiences of tomorrow by showcasing masterworks from the past. The group believes theatre educates the soul, and can inspire and empower its audiences and participants.
onnecting community through health and art is what this Urban Hero does best. Scarborough artist and resident Fazilatun Nessa Babli is a volunteer and program director with the Healthy Living Through Art project in the Kingston-Galloway Orton Park neighbourhood. She brings art, including a variety of visual and performing arts workshops and opportunities, for children and residents that focus on showing healthy living through their art.
For example, one student painted an Egyptian dancer to show how dancing is a part of healthy living. The program helps children get access to resources such as professional instructions and media supplies. Healthy Living Through Art was started in 2008 by a committee of parents in the neighbourhood who wanted to improve community health, creative expression, family connections and community safety. Babli has been a volunteer with the project since

The Awards
T
he Scarborough Mirror Urban Hero Awards is an annual program to celebrate the contribution of community members to community life. Urban Heroes come from all walks of life and enrich our community in many ways.
Their actions inspire. Their words motivate. They are instant role models for anyone wanting to contribute to Scarborough life, making it a little brighter, a little easier and a little more fun for us all. Urban Heroes are nominated by people who appre-
ciate their contribution to community life. Urban Heroes are Scarborough teachers, students, family members, mentors, volunteers, leaders, innovators, protectors and caregivers. Nominations are open to residents, groups and busi-
nesses in Scarborough in the categories of community, arts and culture, business, education, environment, health and sports. For more on the awards, please visit www.urbanheroes.ca. Nominate someone today for an Urban Hero Award for 2014!

o community garden can succeed unless somebody serves as a co-ordinator. Fortunately, the Littles Road Community Garden, started in 2011 by Malvern Action for Neighbourhood Change, has both John Seaman and Hasmukh Mistry in that role. Both men are volunteers who live near the garden in the Morningside Avenue and Sewells Road area of Malvern and have supported the project from the beginning, helping to build its fence and shed, and then landscaping, planting, watering and maintaining the plots. The pair stand out, the organization says, in their level of involvement in the garden and the responsibility they take for it, including passing on their
considerable knowledge in training new gardeners and stepping in to help care for plots when others are ill. Surplus vegetables are given to local residents, and Mistry personally takes vegetables to the street next to the garden. Seaman bought and built wooden frames for the garden’s beans to grow on. Both Seaman and Mistry are assisting the garden with its current plan for a greenhouse to grow seedlings for all of Malvern’s community gardens. They are also advocates for a proposed Rouge Community Farm at Old Finch Avenue and Morningview Trail, which may help connect the neighbourhood to Rouge Park and provide jobs for residents living in the community.

Friends of The Rouge Watershed
he Rouge River is the closest thing Scarborough has to a wilderness, but in 1991, when Friends of the Rouge Watershed was formed by Cathy Gregorio and other volunteers, much of that watershed was in fields rather than forests. Determination, conservation expertise, and good relations with the private and public landowners of what is now the Rouge National Urban Park, have helped the non-profit FRW group turn large sections of the watershed into a living legacy of Canada’s endangered Carolinian Ecozone. Over the last 20 years, FRW has restored 300-plus hectares of public Rouge

Watershed and park lands by planting more than 650,000 native trees, shrubs and wildflowers with the help of more than 48,000 youth and community volunteers. Founding members of the group were originally involved with Rouge issues through Lois James and Save the Rouge Valley System, and helped rescue the Rouge Valley from landfills, highways and urban sprawl. Between 1990 and 1993, FRW contributed to the development of the first Rouge Park Management Plan. In 1997, the group received grants from the Rouge Park and the federal government, allowing FRW to hire staff for the
first time. With full-time staff, volunteer coordination and community conservation work expanded, and the group provided research for strategic planning of the park. Today, FRW is not only planting trees in the Rouge, it is teaching young people about the environment and removing invasive plants such as phragmites and dog-strangling vine. Members of FRW are now advocates for a vision of a Rouge National Urban Park that is based on conservation principles and expanded to 100 square kilometres in order to preserve watersheds linking Lake Ontario and the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Explaining the gluten-free diet Dietary fads come and go, but the gluten-free movement is one nutritional trend that seems to have staying power. The gluten-free diet was once largely exclusive to sufferers of Celiac disease, a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine, preventing it from absorbing parts of food the body needs to stay healthy. That damage is the byproduct of the body's reaction

to gluten, a term used to describe proteins found in specific grains. While the gluten-free diet remains a necessity for some, nowadays even nonsufferers are embracing the gluten-free diet for a variety of reasons. One such reason is non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, or NCGS. Though NCGS is not as severe as Celiac disease, research has suggested that a gluten-free diet can relieve NCGS symptoms, which include abdominal pain and headaches. Allergies are another reason some people may opt for a gluten-free diet. Unlike Celiac disease or NCGS, both of which are digestive system responses to gluten, wheat allergy is an immune-system response and, like other allergies, can be outgrown. But until a wheat allergy is outgrown, it's best to avoid foods, including those with gluten, that might trigger an allergic reaction. While a gluten-free diet is a necessity for people with Celiac disease, NCGS or wheat allergies, it may provide little health benefit to those without such conditions. But that doesn't mean the popularity of the gluten-free diet is about
to wane. Those without a pre-existing medical condition who are considering a gluten-free diet anyway should know a few things about this diet before making such a drastic change. Gluten-free is not easy: Unlike eliminating sugary soft drinks or cutting back on fried foods, going cold turkey on gluten can be very difficult. Many people who adopt a gluten-free diet find it extremely challenging, as gluten proteins can be found in additives, making something as seemingly simple as reading labels a lot trickier than it looks. Though labels may not list gluten among a product's ingredients, men and women must be aware of all additives that contain gluten proteins in order to avoid gluten entirely. And while supermarkets are stocking more gluten-free products, shopping for groceries while on a gluten-free diet can be tedious. Certain foods and drinks must be avoided: Though people considering a gluten-free diet are aware that such a diet requires some sacrifices, they may not know which foods and beverages they will need to avoid until they have insti-
tuted the diet. For example, a gluten-free diet excludes any beverages that contain barley, meaning beer cannot be part of a gluten-free diet. Though many gluten-free beers are now on the market, beer afficionados may find such alternatives cannot compare to the real thing. Rye and wheat products also must be avoided, and these include products whose labels list bulgur, durum flour, farina, graham flour, kamut, semolina, and spelt among their ingredients. Though there are now many gluten-free foods on the market, unless labels say gluten-free, the following are a handful of products that should be avoided: Breads Cakes and pies Cereals Croutons French fries Pastas Salad dressings Soy sauce Soups Many doctors also recommend men and women on a gluten-free diet avoid oats, as they can easily be contaminated with wheat during the growing and processing stages of production.

Be mindful of the dangers of cross-contamination: Cross-contamination can occur during the manufacturing process when glutenfree foods come into contain with foods that contain gluten. Manufacturers typically include the phrase "may contain" on labels as a warning to consumers looking to avoid gluten and other ingredients. Such products should be avoided by men and women on gluten-free diets. Cross-contamination also can occur when gluten-free foods are prepared on the same surfaces as foods containing gluten. For example, toasting gluten-free bread in the same toaster as regular bread can easily lead to contamination. Preventing cross-contamination can be a difficult task, and that difficulty merits consideration by people who want to adopt a gluten-free diet. A gluten-free diet may lead to a vitamin and nutrient deficiency: Grains are often rich in vitamins, and avoiding grains as part of a gluten-free diet can deprive men and women of these vitamins, weakening their bodies as a result. When adopting a gluten-free diet, speak with a dietitian to ensure your diet has enough iron, calcium, fiber, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. If the diet is lacking, you will need to make adjustments. – MS

Hello all, my name is James and I’ve been delivering The Mirror for nearly four years now, since I was twelve. A couple things I enjoy about having a paper route is that it’s a good way to get exercise and that when delivering papers I have time to think to myself about things. Some advice to those new to delivering papers or are considering a paper route, is that you should always smile at customers and wish them a nice day when you see them. Overall, the best paper boy/girl is one that is considerate of their customers, enjoys the job and uses the money wisely.

14 players scored goals demonstrating the versatility and depth of the team. “The success in the outdoor season is a reflection of the time, energy and dedication the players invested in developing themselves as soccer players over the prior indoor and current outdoor seasons,” said coach Bosco D’Mello. In the previous indoor season, the team won the Provincial Indoor Soccer League (PISL). In July the team travelled
to Cleveland, Ohio and were finalists in the AC Milan Continental Cup. This presented the team an opportunity to play against highly rated American teams. The Storm boys earned a promotion to the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) in 2014. Team coaches are Pat Thompson and Bosco D’Mello.
