Draining of wetland raises concerns MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com By draining a wetland in Scarborough’s Rouge Park this spring, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority fatally disrupted the lives of birds and amphibians living there, local
naturalists say. The Authority started emptying Reesor Wetland in April because, an official said this week, a resident beaver and muskrats had dug into an earth berm along one of its edges more than 30 times, and the structure was in danger of col-
lapse. But dedicated wetland watchers and Friends of the Rouge Watershed, a conservation group which paid for the marsh in 2008 and helped plant wildflowers there, believe the TRCA overreacted. >>>FATE, page 3

Tamil FesT draws huge crowds
Ben Priebe/Metroland
Scarborough’s second annual Tamil Fest drew a crowd estimated at 175,000 over last Friday, Saturday and Sunday along Markham Road south of Steeles Avenue. Above, a group of boys perform a Tamil Kuthu dance. Below left, Kanan of Kothu Boyz prepares a fresh and spicy batch of kothu. Below right, Shannuga (left), Suhapiraman and Ponnyrai stand together next to the boat which carried the trio, and more than 70 others to the shores of Newfoundland in 1986. Two refugee boats and 155 people were rescued by a Canadian fishing boat at the time. The trio displayed the boat they were on at this weekend’s Tamil Fest.
Victims in triple homicide identified as relatives of accused Police have released the names of the three people killed in an attack at home in the Kingston and Markham roads area last Thursday. They have been identified as Susan, Alexander and Christopher Ryan — all relatives of the accused, Brett Ryan, 35. Sources have said Susan, was the accused’s mother, and Christoper and Alexander were his brothers. Emergency crews were called to 10 Lawndale Rd. near Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue for a report of a stabbing around 1 p.m. “This dwelling is occupied by a woman and two men. Uniform officers from 43 Division attended this address and located the lifeless bodies of three individuals,” Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone said a news conference Monday. “A woman and a man were located in a standalone garage next to this dwelling. Another man was located on the driveway near the garage. All three individuals were observed to have physical trauma and were pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Autopsy results were also released earlier this week. The woman died of ligature strangulation while the man found in the garage died of a crossbow bolt stab wound to the neck. The cause of death for the other man was a single arrowhead stab wound to the neck. A crossbow was seized at the scene. Brett Ryan, of Toronto, who was taken into custody at the scene, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Ryan and a male witness were taken to hospital where they were treated and released. Carbone, of the homicide squad, said police also seized items at a secondary crime scene at an apartment on Queens Quay in downtown Toronto that is associated to Ryan. When officers arrived at the apartment, they called in the CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) team. “At this point, I can say there was no danger to the public,” Carbone con-
firmed. Investigators want to speak with anyone who had contact with Ryan between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. Thursday. “We certainly would like to speak to any of his co-workers. We understand he may have attended a local university,” Carbone noted. “My appeal here and my message is to reach out to as many people who knew Mr. Ryan. ... They may be able to supply us with some more information as to why this occurred.” When asked if Ryan’s fiancé is assisting in the investigation, Carbone said police are “getting a great deal of cooperation from the people surrounding” the accused. “This investigation is very unusual, and we’re still seeking and speaking to other witnesses,” said Carbone, adding investigators also “have some surveillance video to go through.” The two crime scenes are still being examined by police. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
Fate of pair of trumpeter swans particularly upsetting for wetland watchers >>>from page 1 They’re particularly upset by the disappearance of Ozzie and Harriet, a mated pair of trumpeter swans who nested in the wetland. “We said, ‘If you don’t put water back in, they will die,” recalled Arlene Brazeau, who with a group of friends has watched the wetland near the Toronto Zoo for years. The group recorded changes to the man-made marsh and its wildlife in pictures, but much of what they witnessed this summer was distressing. It included watching areas which had teamed with frogs dry up, and seeing wood ducks appear to attack their own offspring as water levels
continued to drop. “When things get bad they kill their babies,” said Brazeau, who suggested more wildlife could have survived if the wetland hadn’t completely drained. “They knew a drought was coming, everybody knew that. So why would you do this?” As she showed a visitor the wetland, a solitary mallard flew onto a small greenish pool that remained. Minutes later, one of the muskrats slipped into the water, then dived away from view. Brazeau took many photographs of the pair of swans, which took turns tending their nest from May 7 until around June 20, when observers noticed Ozzie, the male, was
gone. “We think probably a coyote got him,” she said, adding Harriet came off the nest two days later. She showed a last photograph of the swan in which it appears to have blood on its neck. Trumpeters, once wiped out in Ontario before being reintroduced here, are still a threatened species. Brazeau hopes to spot the couple soon at Bluffers Park, where they have wintered before, but she and some friends remain angry at the TRCA for its decision. “From now on, we have to have a say in what they do.” Gord MacPherson, a TRCA manager of restoration services, said the wetland held an extra metre of water in April, and efforts to drop
the level failed because its outlet was plugged. If the berm crumbled during a storm, it could create a six-foot ditch across Reesor Road, MacPherson said this week.“We made the decision to drain it completely because it was compromised. It was a question, in my mind, of public safety.” He continued to watch the wetland, he added, and considering the drought conditions, “I think the wildlife was doing all right.” In a letter last week, Jim Robb, FRW’s general manager, asked the Authority for a meeting and said it could have waited after the most sensitive breeding times for waterfowl and amphibians.
Draining the wetland this spring “disrupted breeding habitat and upset many people,” he added. “Birds couldn’t rely on water to protect them from predators.” But MacPherson said the berm had to be dry before it could be repaired, and work to do that will likely take place this winter after an open house on the site. While glad people are passionate about Reesor Wetland, he said he didn’t think the Authority would do anything it did differently. As for the swans, MacPherson said he found the nest and saw the pair’s breeding had been unsuccessful - which is common for a first attempt. “It was a single egg, and it wasn’t viable.”

Make the most of the unofficial end of summer
WRitE uS
T
oday marks the start of a new month and the unofficial end of summer. And what a summer it was. Heat and humidty and long, sunny days. Patios packed with patrons, and pedestrians taking in the sights across our city and beyond. The exceptional weather was an uncommon trend for Toronto, but one that was welcomed (mostly) throughout the last few months. Plans are no doubt being made for the Labour Day long weekend. The weather appears it will cooperate, with sun and warmth showering most of the Greater Toronto Area. The season’s change is no time be sad, though. Instead, relish in the warm OuR ViEW weather expected. Relish in one last great weekend New seasons with friends and family. Relish in the chance for one final road trip bring new before school starts. There’s certainly no shortage of experiences things to do in Toronto. The CNE is on until Labour Day and you can take in the 67th annual Canadian International Air Show as it soars over Lake Ontario. The annual Labour Day Parade in Toronto takes place Monday on University Avenue. GREAT LIVING
If your weekend doesn’t include any social gatherings or last-minute excursions, just take the time to celebrate living in a great city like Toronto. And just because summer’s ending, the fun doesn’t stop – it carries on throughout the year. From walks to enjoy the fall colours, visits to the apple orchard to select the best fruit for some seasonal canning or baking, to skiing and skating, there’s lots to look forward to in the coming months. For instance, the Toronto International Film Festival brings stars and movie fans from around the world to our city this month. There’s also Nuit Blanche in October, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November and the 112th annual Toronto Santa Claus Parade also in November. Then it will be a new year and not long after the season will change once again from fall to winter. The goal is to change along with the seasons, finding beauty in everything that is around us, but most importantly in ourselves.

Scarborough-Rouge River misstep reveals PC party sex-ed rift Voters in Scarborough-Rouge River will be casting ballots today in the byelection to replace Liberal MPP Bas Balkisoon – and here’s hoping that by now most of them are clear on at least one key point: Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown is not planning on scrapping the controversial sexeducation plan introduced by Kathleen Wynne. Early voters – about 4,500 of them who voted in advance polls from Aug. 20 to 26 – can be excused for a bit of confusion. On the weekend, a letter went out from PC candidate Raymond Cho’s campaign, claiming Brown had a very different plan: that the PCs would, if they prevailed in the 2018 provincial election, scrap the whole thing. On Monday, Brown was forced to clarify, and he did, in an essay published in the Toronto Star. “It was a mistake for a letter to go out to Scarborough-Rouge River voters saying I would
david nickle the city “scrap” the updated curriculum. This is not my view. This is not what I will do.” What he would do, wrote Brown, is consult on future additions to the curriculum. The local campaign parsed those words, somehow, to mean that he would also get rid of what was there. It’s a pretty big shift on the part of the ground campaign. Brown was, after all, on record firmly as supporting Wynne’s sex-education plan, in spite of protests from some parents who are fearful of its frank inclusion of subjects such as LGBTQ and trans-gender issues, masturbation, consent and contraception. Such a shift might, indeed, convince some of those parents living in the riding to vote for
Progressive Conservative candidate Raymond Cho. Of course, Brown has made it clear that he doesn’t want votes on that basis. Based on his own leadership, it would be duplicitous, and it’s to his credit that he’s unwilling to win an election that way. What this summer byelection misstep does show is what could remain an existential rift in the Progressive Conservative party heading into the main game in 2018: the gap between a socially conservative wing of the party, and the fiscally conservative, socially centrist wing that dominated during Bill Davis’ Blue Machine era last century and still held sway to a degree during the more tumultuous Mike Harris years in the late 1990s and early aught. Ontario’s PCs have been in the middle of a tug of war since that time. John Tory tried and failed to achieve a mandate, pulling the party back to the
centre. Tim Hudak likewise failed to bring the party back to power by pulling much farther to the right. Whatever the outcome of today’s byelection in Scarborough-Rouge River, Brown will have to decide how he will lead through the main game in 2018. The Cho campaign in Scarborough-Rouge River (managed, it should be noted, by former city councillor and mayoral candidate Doug Ford) has made it clear that there may be an appetite, on the ground in Scarborough at least, for a hard-right, socially conservative pendulum swing. And even if there’s not that much appetite on the ground…clearly, there is, as there ever has been, a powerful hunger within the party itself. On that, there should be no confusion.

A depressing Labour Day reminder A story of overcoming adversity Was there ever a more depressing statutory holiday than Labour Day? I’m for holidays as much as anyone, but this one really stings. It’s right in the name, if you don’t see it, labour. I know technically it’s a day to recognize the advent of organized labour. A celebration of the people as it were. But really what it means is: ”Wake up summer’s done hope you had fun cuz it’s over. And you are really going to be labouring the rest of the year probably until about next summer”. So they just shortened it to Labour Day because the real name is too long and wouldn’t fit on the calendar. For those of us of a certain age, getting back to the full routine of school for the kids, back-to-school programs and sports can be a little daunting. Who’s kidding who, wearing pants can be daunting. And the back-to-school advertising seems to start earlier every year. I should start recording these things but this year I believe the first
john lyon LYON AROUND back-to-school advertisement I saw was July 21. Really? July 21 is closer to the beginning of summer than it is to back to school. I myself have been known to increase my size over the course of six weeks, particularly in the waist, so definitely a potential money waster shopping too early for the kids. The advertising people should be subject to some form of public shaming for the crime of some kind of seasonal manipulation or misrepresentation. I haven’t come up with a formal name for the charge. And the traffic. For those of us who commute to jobs with standard hours in the city, the first thing you will notice is the traffic come Tuesday. The school buses, the extra cars, the pedestrians. It’s almost like a cartoon where the before is an idyllic country scene with happy drivers and
TTC riders in shirt sleeves making their way mirthfully to school, or to their chosen occupations. Maybe a few of us men can event get away with open-toed sandals in the hottest days. But come Labour Day life changes. It’s like – womp! You were hit with a brick and you think “Wow where did all these extra cars, kids, and buses come from”. I for one did not know we had this many kids and buses in the city. No more idyllic scenes of drivers in shirt sleeves. The open-toed sandals, if they ever existed, are definitely out the window. Oh, and don’t be caught wearing white of course, because you are not supposed to wear white after Labour Day. Not sure why. Maybe I’ll ask the advertising people who started the back-to-school campaign in mid-July. John Lyon is a longtime Scarborough resident. His column appears every second Thursday in The Mirror. Setbacks are like track and field training hurdle bars. If you didn’t go over the first time, take a few steps back and charge at it again. This is just one of the lessons written at the end of each chapter of Resilience, the story of Tasheka Mason’s fight to overcome adversity. The 109-page book details her life, from her perspective, as she goes from childhood to adulthood. One of the book’s unique offerings is the lessons from the author at the end of each chapter, seemingly what she learned through various situations and experiences. Even more of a draw for me is the fact that Mason is just 22 years old and has lived in Scarborough since arriving in Canada from Jamaica at age 13. Of all the books I have read, few are written with as relatable of references as John McCrae Senior Public School, Lawrence Avenue and Manse Road, the Tropicana summer jobs for youth program or riding the subway from Kennedy to Kipling station.
priya ramanujam MILLENNIAL MIND In addition to Mason’s tell-it-how-it-is, conversational storytelling style, what makes Mason’s book hard to put down, is the fact that it chronicles something many of us Scarborough folk know all too well: struggle and overcoming that struggle. While everyone’s story is different, and although everyone may not have gone through exactly what Mason did, her story is understood and Scarborough readers will likely find themselves rooting for her until the last page. “I know the struggle,” she says, reflecting on not only why she wrote the book, but also why she pursued a career in community work. “I feel like it’s something that I could speak to with my eyes closed . . . I would say my work is to genuinely make people believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.” In Resilience, Mason recounts stories of enduring
physical and emotional abuse and navigating sex and love in young relationships to going through severe depression, contemplating suicide and suffering in silence. Her story is indicative of what many in Scarborough continue to struggle with daily. As she points out, while resources have increased since she first arrived in Scarborough, they still do not match the level of struggle some people are experiencing. She hopes that more people sharing their stories will bring about change. “I want [people] to say, ‘I’m not ashamed to talk about who I am,’” Mason says. “This was a risk that I took to have people read about me and still respect me for who I am and not judge me by my past. I want people to say ‘I want to take that step – to share my story, to change lives.’” Priya Ramanujam is a journalist, editor, and co-founder of Urbanology Magazine. From left to right: Donald Trump attends the April 2012 opening of the Trump International Hotel and Tower Toronto. Mayor Rob Ford is surrounded by media and supporters while making his way through the crowd during Ford Fest in Thomson Memorial Park on July 22, 2014.
A look inside controversial campaigns DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A businessman whose success stems from inherited wealth, whose opinion tends toward the blunt and controversial, and whose celebrity makes a populist-fuelled run for high office a real possibility. Remind you of anyone? If you said real estate mogul and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, congratulations: you’re alive on this planet in 2016. If you said the late former Toronto mayor and councillor Rob Ford… well, congratulations too. You were around for at least some of the controversial mayor’s term of office, and may even remember his juggernaut campaign to win the mayoralty in 2010. And looking at both campaigns, six years apart, you might think these two campaigns are hitting many of the same marks — that Rob Ford’s 2010 decisive win against well-funded Liberal George Smitherman might provide instruction to Trump’s attempt to best well-funded Democrat Hillary Clinton. You might think that in August 2016. But really? Nick Kouvalis, the Conservative pollster who took over Ford’s own faltering campaign in July of 2010, says it’s more complex. There are some similarities — but there are key differences between Ford and Trump that could turn out to be deal-breakers, in almost every area. Here are five of them:
to help with small issues. “He did all the phone calls but he was specifically well-known as a guy not putting up with waste and mismanagement.”
2
The base. Kouvalis concedes that Ford’s base — the group of mostly suburban voters who eventually became known as Ford Nation — and the base of supporters attending Trump’s rallies come from the same source: “People who are just really pissed off. That’s sort of the same, people who can’t get ahead as hard as they work.” One difference, though, is that Ford’s base was multi-ethnic; Trump so far has extended his appeal to mostly white voters, aided by consistently racist rhetoric. And that, said Kouvalis, is a mistake.
3
The Gaffes: Both campaigns have dealt with missteps and scandals, but Kouvalis says that
Trump is in a worse position because most of his problems arise from missteps on the campaign trail — insulting the Khan family, suggesting a judge with Mexican heritage was unqualified to rule on his case are two examples. Ford’s problems — a drunk driving case from many years past in Florida, or a tape in which he appeared to discuss helping a supporter buy street-level OxyContin — were in the past. “People don’t care about things in the past. They do kind of care about things that are said in the moment.”
4
The Ground Game: On this, there is no comparison. Led by Kouvalis, Ford’s campaign team pushed hard to build a database based on Ford’s own records of phone calls he’d returned and, later, based on robocalls. By election day, the campaign knew who their supporters were, where they lived, and how likely they were to come out and vote. Trump, said Kouvalis, “has got nothing. We’re talking about a national race. I just
1
The brand: As mentioned up top, both men are outsiders with private sector bona fides. But where Trump is famous for living in gold-plated luxury and arrogantly firing those who don’t measure up, Ford spent a decade as a city councillor in Etobicoke, doing the opposite. “He had 10 years at City Hall,” says Kouvalis, who notes that Ford was also famous for returning constituents’ phone calls and trying

don’t know how you can have nothing. Hillary Clinton has 700 paid staff in a building.”
5
The Competition: Here, Kouvalis says, there are similarities. While Trump is behind in nearly every poll, in former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton he is facing an opponent who is well funded but historically unpopular among voters. Ford was in similar circumstances, vis-àvis former Liberal Cabinet Minister George Smitherman. Kouvalis maintains that unpopularity pushed Ford’s support to 47 per cent — higher than anyone had expected. And he said that Clinton’s unpopularity could in the end be the one thing that might help Trump recover. “He’s still got three months,” said Kouvalis. “He doesn’t have to bring it back that much — he’s behind five points nationally and that’s nothing.” What would Kouvalis advise Trump to do? What Ford did in 2010: stay on message, listen to his advisors and never, ever ad-lib. Do that, said Kouvalis, and the Republican campaigns downstream will start doing the groundwork that Trump’s campaign hasn’t yet begun. And ultimately? Take the lesson from Ford. “Ford and Trump are different because Ford knew why he wanted to be the mayor and Ford was also willing to learn. He was humble and Trump isn’t. Trump knows what he knows and doesn’t want to ever admit that he doesn’t know something,” said Kouvalis. * In the days following this interview (conducted over August 22-23), Trump may have shown signs of following this advice, softening his position on immigration and attempting at least nominally to reach out to African American voters, and his standings in polls has improved. But as the late Rob Ford was wont to say — the only poll that counts is the one on election day. And that is still more than two months off.

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce
the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!
