A street at the centre of Scarborough will soon bear the name of a man who grew up there, a soldier who died serving Canada in Afghanistan. Canlish Road should be ceremonially dedicated to Cpl. Joshua Caleb Baker, members of Scarborough Community Council unanimously decided during its recent meeting. Street signs on Canlish, which runs north of Lawrence Avenue between Birchmount and Kennedy roads, will be changed to add Baker’s name. S c a r b o r o u g h C e n t re Councillor Michael Thompson said the honour is a fitting one, and added it’s supported by people on the street, 65 of which signed a petition in favour of the change. “The community has been consulted, and they’re in agreement,” he said.

Canlish Road will soon bear a dedication to Cpl. Joshua Caleb Baker.

Baker joined the Canadian army at age 18. In February 2010, at 24, he was in the Loyal Edmonton Regiment of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and part of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan, when he was killed at a firing range near Kandahar Airfield. Thompson said the young Scarborough man deserved the dedication, an acknowledgement that he paid the ultimate price “for Canada and our freedom.”

Info fair to take place at The Scarborough Hospital JEAN KO DIN jkodin@insidetoronto.com The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is reaching out to the community to attend an informational health fair Tuesday, Aug. 26 as a part of its commitment to a more seamless patient experience. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., representatives from 18 health care providers and community agencies will come together at the Global

Community Resource Centre at TSH’s General campus. Display booths for each organization will be set up to provide community members with information on the services that are available within the Scarborough community. Presentations will also be held throughout the day, looking at patient stories to educate people on how to navigate through the health care system.

Waheeda Rahman, director of TSH’s organizational development and diversity office, said Scarborough has a wealth of community agencies that provide a variety of health care services, but most people don’t always know where to go or who to ask. “We really wanted them to know that there is a commitment on integrated health services,” said Rahman. “We are hoping that they get information as to what

their health options are, to feel empowered to ask questions and take control of their health.” Rahman said the hospital has recognized health has a socio-economic impact on the community. Many immigrants come to the country healthy, but because of a new environment, a new diet and a new lifestyle, their health tends to decline. “We want to be more pro-

active with our community and make newcomers feel more empowered with information,” said Rahman. The Global Community Resource Centre is at the TSH general campus, 3050 Lawrence Ave. E. The Community Desk is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The centre is a collaborative model in partnership with 14 community agencies that

staff the Community Desk as a “one-stop shop.” The centre provides multilingual resources and workshops on a range of topics every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. To learn more about the health care fair and the Global Community Resource Centre, visit www.tsh.to

What are candidates saying about building a better Toronto?

Write us

A

recent study by the University of Toronto says our city has a “major infrastructure funding shortfall” when it comes to financial support from other levels of government and its own property taxpayers. We have said before that when it comes to projects such as transit expansion, roads and public housing, Toronto residents will get the city they are willing to pay for. So far, based on the fourth-place finish we received from the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Livability Survey this week, it seems Toronto residents have been getting an excellent return for their relatively low investment. That’s especially true since Toronto property taxes are, on average, lower than those paid by residents of other Ontario cities, according to the U of T report, Is Toronto Fiscally Healthy? our view The report by the Institute for Municipal Finance and Decide what Governance at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs also said we are willing Toronto does not have a problem when it comes to spending of taxto pay for payers’ dollars. “Toronto does not face a fiscal crisis by any means,” the report said. Toronto’s challenge is bringing in more money to pay for needed infrastructure improvements. In responding to the report, city manager Joe Pennachetti pointed out there is not a lot of room left for cost-cutting in the city, but “we don’t have all the revenues to ensure we can grow a city that we all want.” Most concerning is the estimated $860-million repair backlog faced by Toronto Community Housing, Canada’s biggest landlord. The operation of public housing is fully funded in every province except Ontario. Also, the city still must cover the operating costs of the TTC to the tune of $250 million, funding that used to come from the province. As campaigning becomes more intense in this fall’s municipal election, candidates will be cherrypicking bits of the U of T report as either justification for their past actions or as a call for change. Both arguments will have some merit. This campaign, listen to candidates who can speak about the challenges the city faces, what kind of city we want to build, what are we willing to pay for and who should be paying.

column

On the cotton candy trail at The Ex I ’m just on my way out the door to head down to The Ex and I’m a man on a mission. It occurred to me that after all these years I couldn’t even fill up a measly sticky note with what I know about cotton candy. All I can offer is that it’s made out of sugar, it’s fluffy and it’s pink. You’d figure I’d know a lot more than that, cotton candy being such a popular Ex staple and all. But I never tried cotton candy when I was growing up. It wasn’t on my snacking radar. I was well aware it was sweet and, like most candy, really bad for you, which normally is enticing enough to reel in any kid. But I never found it visually appealing. But I had a bigger concern: I couldn’t figure out how the heck you were supposed to eat it. I could eat ice cream in my sleep without dripping

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY

even so much as a smidgen on my pillow. Same goes for a Popsicle. For the record, I did both many times as a child much to the amazement of the Sandman. Devouring a chocolate bar was, fittingly, also child’s play. Ditto for licorice or a lollipop. And a piece of cake? It was a piece of cake! Treats are supposed to be user-friendly, right? dining dilemma Not so cotton candy. It’s modus operandi of consumption was not obvious. It seemed to have infinite possibilities. Do you chew it? Do you lick it? Do you stick your face in it and gobble away? Do you tear off little pieces and nibble on them one at a time? Do you let it melt

in your mouth, not in your hands? Do you let it melt in your hands, not in your mouth? Some of the above? All of the above? None of the above? it’s a mystery

I had no idea and for a very good reason. I’d never actually seen anybody eating any. All I ever saw were kids holding the fullsized original purchase, their faces peering out from behind. I also occasionally saw kids with cotton candy stains on their faces wiping sticky fingers on their shirts, but they, too, were holding the whole cotton candy intact. I never saw partially eaten portions in progress. When kids ate it and how they ate it were both a mystery. And here’s another question: what’s the parental holding protocol when it comes to cotton candy? Do they hold their children’s

cotton candy in between gulps or slurps? And what if they took you to The Ex with your siblings and a few friends? Are mom and dad expected to hang on to three or four in each hand while the kids go on the rides? And what’s that thing the cotton candy is on called? And how does it stay attached to it? And what happens if it’s windy – does the cotton candy blow away? And suppose you only eat half and take the rest home, do you put it in the fridge or the cupboard? And how long can you keep it before it goes bad? If you’ll excuse, it’s time to hit the road. I’ve got some serious cotton candy watching to take care of down at The Ex.

Fight against Birchmount plan will continue To the editor: Re: ‘ Residents balk at Habitat for Humanity Plans’, News, Aug. 14. The community’s opposition in the matter of rezoning and putting in a housing complex in the green space located at 357 Birchmount Rd. was made known in 2012 and continues. The situation is regrettable but never should have been allowed to get to its current point. Residents are extremely upset and continue appealing to stop the applications and save the green space. Despite its own reasonable and good faith conduct, the community finds that it has been forced into the current, dreadful situation by what it sees as a series of bad faith moves on the part of the city and the developer, as well as by improper application of the development process. The community finds that, based on its observations and experience, this seems to be a case where a developer has been shown every accommodation, while the community has been and is being thrown under the bus. The applications to rezone and build on the property cannot be

supported. This application poses significant negative impact for local residents. Destroying community It seems that this developer was targeted and hand picked by the city which has allowed it to purchase land from the city at fire sale prices. The proposal will destroy our community’s green space which includes a wonderful old heritage tree. Is this really how our tax dollars are being used? Nobody seems to care what the people in the community want. The developer’s claims that it has worked with the community to satisfy its concerns are laughable in our opinion. No one has come forward to meet with and discuss ideas for changes with residents. Residents have only learned about these so called “changes” by reading the reports published by city staff for council meetings. The developer couldn’t even wait for the report requested at

At the May and August 2014 meetings of Scarborough Community Council, having noted the irregularities exposed by the community and having discovered additional ones, the city noted that “bungling of the process” had taken place; that “a great wrong” has been done against the community; and that the city “screwed up”. Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker’s response to Councillor Gary Crawford’s motion stated that the city will look like fools if it goes to the OMB opposing the proposed development. Perhaps De Baeremaeker fails

to realize that, through its own actions from the very beginning, the city not only looks foolish, it is foolish. Since he seems to be so supportive of this developer, perhaps Councillor De Baeremaeker should welcome their housing complexes into his ward. This community cannot support this development being in the green space that it is proposed for. In spite of requests from the community since 2012, nothing has been done to mitigate the circumstances or put a stop to this process. Instead, it has been steadily supported and pushed through by the city. The community will continue working with the local councillor and is considering its options.

its May meeting, appealing to the OMB regardless. That compromised the ability of council to review, make a decision and take action on the report. The community is sorry for the families and recognizes that the developer is also in an awkward position, however there cannot be any respect afforded to the name, brand, concept or work of a “charity” like that.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Ave. E. on Oct. 8. Anyone with information is asked to call 43 Division at 416-808-4300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

needs of children, said they are dedicated to providing these types of opportunities to kids in various communities. “It is important for us to provide as many opportunities as possible to the kids so they can live healthy, productive lives within their communities. It is our job to have them be the best possible people they can be.” It was the first time for many of the young students participating in the camp. Anita Aden, 12, said she enjoyed everything about the computer camp. “The camp was great and

my favourite day was when the camera crew came and they taught us about the cameras and how they worked,” she said. Amit Jaikaran, 12, had an “amazing experience,” learning about software and robots saying it was very interesting, but hard too. The camp also tries to instill creative problem solving skills by having participants build the best tower or the best bridge using Popsicle sticks or straws. “This exercise is about having the kids collaborate and using creativity to solve the problem, and those are really the building blocks of engineering,” Robitaille said.

opinion

Let zoo make own decisions The Toronto Zoo turned 40 on Friday, and the best present Toronto could give it is independence. City councillors proved it didn’t have that by sending the zoo’s elephants to a sanctuary, over the objections of keepers and the zoo’s management board. By the time the “ladies” arrived in California last October, after a tug-of-war lasting years, the U.S. Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) had stripped the zoo of accreditation. Those elephants may be happier at the sanctuary; they’re certainly warmer, but the zoo’s prospects are damaged when it’s needed more than ever to breed endangered animals and protect them in the wild, and to teach people how to stop extinctions. That’s work supported by both sides in the elephant battle, but one side, backed by most city councillors, made it harder for the zoo to reach its goals. Glenn De Baeremaeker, a councillor on the zoo board,

mike adler the city says AZA is a “morally bankrupt” institution the zoo shouldn’t rejoin. That’s fine, until you consider animals the zoo has on loan to AZA zoos or is loaning from them, or conservation programs it works on with other AZA zoos. The longer it’s stuck with lower status, the harder dealing with AZA zoos gets, and it can’t get accredited until council agrees that, while the city owns the animals, the zoo decides what’s done with them. Council also rejected the zoo’s proposal in 2012 to run itself through an independent body, as it did from 1974 to 1978. This time, the body would have “prominent corporate, community and business leaders” and no council control. De Baeremaeker calls this “a fiasco,” but Gloria Lindsay Luby, a councillor and zoo board vice-chair, hopes a report on zoo governance is

heard next year by a different council that will “leave the zoo matters up to the zoo.” Lack of independence also hobbled the zoo’s fundraising. Its renewal plan in 2009 – $250 million over 10 years – was abandoned. Contrast that with the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Transformation AGO funding drive; it met its $254-million goal five months early in 2008, then increased it to $276 million. This city stepped up for a place to house fine art. Why wouldn’t Torontonians do the same for the zoo? Our zoo is part of that mounting public infrastructure deficit mentioned in a University of Toronto report last week, only this isn’t chunks falling off the Gardiner Expressway, it’s a $15-million animal hospital the zoo needs but can’t afford; it’s work to save animals from extinction. It can’t happen unless the next council unchains the zoo and trusts it to be on its own. Metroland Media Toronto reporter Mike Adler is on the city hall beat while David Nickle is on vacation.

The annual Urban Hero Awards were developed to recognize the individuals, groups and businesses that make our community a better place to live.

Our focus is the grassroots organizations, the average Joe or Jill – people who do great things but don’t always get the deadline recognition they deserve. Now ’s t h e i r time to shine! Last year’s winners included the founder of a local basketball league, a football coach, the

The first Union Pearson (UP) Express trains have arrived in Toronto for testing. Reaching a top speed of 145 kilometres per hour, Metrolinx says the new trains will be able to travel between Terminal One of Pearson International Airport to a new station located inside Union Station’s Skywalk in 25 minutes, making two stops along the way at Weston and Bloor GO stations. Eighteen of the “clean diesel” trains were ordered by Metrolinx for the all-day UP service, which can be converted to electric in the future, although the province has not yet announced when that will happen. Councillor Del Grande to run for TCDSB trustee seat MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

Mike Del Grande, who in February said he wouldn’t seek his Agincourt seat on city council again, is trying re-join the city’s separate school board. “If I sit at home and do nothing, I’ll go nuts,” said Del Grande, adding he’s been admonished by constituents on a regular basis since news got out he wasn’t running again. On Monday of this week, he registered to run for Ward 7 trustee in the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the post he left behind in 2003 when he was elected councillor for Ward 39 ScarboroughAgincourt.

Re-elected twice in the ward, Del Grande was the city’s budget chairperson under Mayor Rob Ford until, disappointed, he stepped aside from those extra duties early in 2013. In an interview, he said a return to the school board as a trustee was logical because it is a part-time position with less stress. “I’ve done both. I know what they’re like,” he said. Del Grande also said he’s leaving city hall with a whole lot of city hall experience, including how to deal with city government He added he doesn’t believe in selling schools or public green space to provide the board with cash infusions. A chartered accountant,

Del Grande spent nine years as a trustee, both for Ward 18 of the former Metropolitan Toronto Separate School Board from 1994 to 1998, and on the Toronto Catholic Board from 1998 to 2003. The councillor was succeeded as Ward 7 trustee by his son, John Del Grande, who holds the post and registered in June to run again. The elder Del Grande’s registration Monday has pitted father and son against each other, along with two other candidates, Aldo Calla and Emmanuel Yanga. Del Grande, however, suggested his son will soon withdraw from the race. “The matter will sort itself out in the next while,” he said.

Let’s get physical! When today’s parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when today’s kids become tomorrow’s parents, chances are their recollections won’t recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun. Many of today’s kids prefer to play a video game on the couch instead of going outdoors and being physically active. The potential ramifications of youngsters choosing a more sedentary lifestyle are dangerous, as it increases their risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments and joint problems, among other things. What’s more, numerous studies have found that obese or overweight children are more likely to become obese or overweight adults, which highlights the importance of embracing a physically active lifestyle as a youngster. Parents know it’s not always easy to get kids to be more physically active. But the following are a few tips parents might find useful when encouraging their kids to embrace sports this fall. • Give toys that encourage physical activity. Kids love toys, and their toys will often dictate

how they spend their days. Instead of buying the latest video game console, give kids toys that encourage them to be active. This can include balls, bicycles, jump ropes, or even a backyard swingset. Kids who embrace these activities are more likely to choose sports as extra curricular activities. • Reduce time spent in front of the television. Parents who can effectively minimize the amount of time their child spends in front of the television, whether reducing their time spent watching television or playing video games, will likely be more successful at instilling a love of physical activity as well. Don’t allow televisions in their bedrooms, as that will only make it harder to monitor just how much time kids are spending in front of their TVs. • Remember that physical activity should be fun. Not all kids are athletic, and some will likely bemoan participating in recreational sports leagues. But that doesn’t mean parents should give up on encouraging physical activity. Instead, find a physical activity that your child finds fun and encourage his or her participation. This might be nontraditional

kids’ sports like cycling or jogging or activities like dancing, hiking or even bird watching. Once a child exhibits a healthy interest in a physical activity that you have deemed safe, encourage it. • Set a positive example. Kids, especially younger children, look up to their parents and often try to emulate what Mom and Dad are doing. Parents can make the most of that adoration by setting a positive example

and being physically active themselves. Go for a nightly bike ride or a walk around the neighborhood with your youngsters in tow. Or put that elliptical machine in the basement to good use. Whatever physical activity you choose, you can bet your children will express an interest in it as well, and that’s a great way to make them more enthusiastic about having a healthy and active lifestyle.

Impressive Advanced Placement Exam Results The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers motivated students the opportunity to take challenging university level courses while still in high school. Successful completion of an AP examination can result in a university credit, advanced standing or both. In May TCPHS students wrote a total of 91 AP exams and our students should be very proud of their results. Out of the 50 students who wrote the exams, 82% passed which exceeded the Ontario average of 80%, and greatly surpassed the worldwide average of 61%. From our grade 12 students who wrote their exams this year, 15 students were recognized as “AP Scholars” for successfully completing 3 or more AP exams which is equivalent to 3 to 5 university credits. Mohammed Roohi received the “National AP Scholar Award” for successfully completing 5 AP exams with a score of 4 or higher (out of 5) on all exams. Congratulations to all participating students. How to help kids make new friends Kids pick up much more than book smarts and sports skills from school and extra curricular programs—it’s where they first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships. While many kids find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance so they can make the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that might last a lifetime.

• Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to establish friendships. • Discover common interests. Encourage your child to join a club

or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk to other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier. • Teach proper manners. Children who are polite, well-mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be

shunned by other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends. • Take the friendship lead. As parents, you can improve your child’s chances of making friends by getting friendly with their classmates’ parents. You do not have to become bosom buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children. Social-

izing as families also presents other opportunities to get together and solidify relationships. • Boost confidence levels. As a parent you can talk to your children about their strengths and positive attributes. Emphasizing kids’ best traits will increase their selfesteem, and that sense of selfworth can make it easier for them to make friends. A child who is shy and insecure may retreat when meeting new people, but a child who can proudly stand behind his or her accomplishments may attract friends easily.

The unanimous endorsement of having the province prohibit e-cigarette use wherever smoking is prohibited, ban sales to minors and remove e-cigarette displays in stores will lead to a follow-up report in February. If the province doesn’t act by then, the city should, McKeown said.

Doctor leads collaborative program between hospitals Ali Raza araza@insidetoronto.com An award-winning pediatrician from Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is leading a collaborative residency program between RVHS and The Scarborough Hospital (TSH), as he believes better training leads to better doctors. Dr. Yehuda Nofech-Mozes, director of the pediatric medical education program at RVHS won the Marvin Gerstein Award for excellence in teaching at the Pediatric Awards Day at the Hospital for Sick Children in June. Nofech-Mozes’ teaching credentials and recognition allow him the opportunity to strengthen Scarborough’s pediatric care options. The new collaborative residency program allows medical students train at RVHS or TSH so that the two hospitals can share resources. “We have such a strong outpatient clinic setup so TSH felt that trainees might benefit by spending some time with us,” NofechMozes said. “It goes back to the patients, if you get more skills as a trainee and you know what’s available to you, when you become a family doctor you know how to use those resources better.” Started a month ago, the residency collaboration specifically lets second year medical

Marvin Gerstein Award winner for Excellence in Clinical Teaching Dr. Yehuda Nofech-Mozes, left, and University of Toronto department of paediatrics, director of postgraduate medical education Dr. Adelle Atkinson display Dr. Nofech-Mozes’ citation recently after he was recognized for his teaching at U of T.

residents rotate from RVHS to TSH, spending a month at each hospital. The collaboration is one of the few initial

steps that Nofech-Mozes says can lead to a merger between RVHS and TSH into one location to provide Scarborough residents with all their medical needs without having to go to the downtown core. “Our nursery, the neonatal intensive care unit, was upgraded and we now have the resources to treat sick babies, younger premature births and allowing the family stay in the Scarborough area instead of travelling downtown to tertiary centres,” he said. In addition to the nursery upgrade, RVHS opened an allergy and immunology clinic in its pediatric department last year. This year, it’s expected to open a pediatric dermatology clinic. And now, medical students at TSH can receive training at these pediatric clinics at RVHS. “I think all these different arms show the community that not only are we strong, but we’re getting stronger and bigger,” NofechMozes said. “And now by having residents from TSH, we’re going to embrace each other and work together closely, if we can get a new structure in 10 to 15 years that would be amazing. If not, we’ll do everything in order to collaborate to become one program to benefit everyone.” Nofech-Mozes’ award was granted to him by his students at the University of Toronto, where he trains pediatric residents at SickKids for the past eight years.

“It’s not that I’m that smart, it’s just experience,” he said. “It’s to teach them the tricks and where not to make a mistake, from your own mistakes, that’s how you share and make better doctors, from your knowledge and experience.” Though RVHS is not affiliated with the university, the hospital’s pediatric department has its own agreement with the medical school. In recent years, there has been a rise in students interested in community pediatrics that have started their rotations at RVHS. The reason for this is that SickKids hospital does not have labour and delivery training for students. Students in rotation at RVHS receive training to attend deliveries, manage newborns and treat premature babies. RVHS’ facilities bolster its ability to train new students, now students at TSH can also take advantage of these facilities. “We get emails and phone calls from all kinds of medical students all around the world and in Ontario,” Nofech-Mozes said. “They hear about Rouge Valley and request elective rotations with us.” Nofech-Mozes believes the reason for this is that the hospital always tries to accommodate trainees. Its facilities, both inpatient and outpatient, allow residents to gain a diverse skill set in training, he said.

New youth group, Islamic Relief Canada team up to host barbecue >>>from page 1 to run.” Nakhuda and some of his friends formed MLYU in August of last year in an effort to support and encourage their fellow youth in the community. “We have no city or other programs for these youth and so we noticed that due to this, more and more youths started to drift towards criminal activities,” said Nakhuda. The organization officially registered as a nonprofit organization just last month. They run a number

of programs at Cornell and Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute. The group is currently working on a website and looking for their own facilities. In the meantime, they are recruiting volunteers and raising awareness through collaborative projects with Islamic Relief. All proceeds from the community barbecue will go towards Islamic Relief’s Helping Hands initiative, which aims to support local communities through dif-

ferent collaborative projects and events. “We have a lot of global initiatives and we just wanted to expand our domestic presence,” said Sohaib Zuberi, Islamic Relief’s development coordinator. Islamic Relief Canada is the largest Islamic charity organization in North America. They run a number of international campaigns, such as food aid, orphan sponsorship and emergency relief efforts.

The Scarborough United Swarm U13 girls soccer team won the Woolwich Invitational tournament in Elmira.

Scarborough United wins in Woolwich The Scarborough United Swarm U13 girls soccer team recently won the championship of the Woolwich invitational tournament in Elmira. The Swarm defeated Orangeville 5-2 in the championship game. The Scarborough girls went undefeated in the tournament, winning four straight games to take the title. In the preliminar y round, Scarborough beat Georgetown

TransCanada would like to take this opportunity to update you on the Eastern Mainline Project. The proposed project is needed to meet firm service commitments following the proposed transfer of a portion of the Canadian Mainline capacity to crude oil service from natural gas services as a part of the Energy East Project. The project is also required to meet growing market demand for new supplies of natural gas from the U.S. Northeast.

4-1, Woolwich 9-2 and Orangeville 7-0. Team members include Kieryn Carlse, Kyra Doto, Terra JeanBaptiste, Cecilia Levy-Bages, Grace Monaghan, Danielle Montecinos, V i c t o r i a Pa u l u s , C h r i s t i n a Petropoulos, Samantha Robillard, Hannah Routledge, Kate Shackleton, Cora Shah, Maya Umraw, Lauryn Wurst and Simone Zomer. Coaches are Marcelo Levy, John Montecinos and Matt Paulus.

TransCanada has considered a number of routing options as part of the consultation process with interested landowners and stakeholders. An initial proposed route was shared in project materials that were provided at Open Houses held between May and June 2014 and during other outreach activities this year. During the Open Houses and as part of ongoing conversations with landowners and stakeholders, we received important feedback and have refined the route for the pipeline. We are continuing our engagement efforts and welcome any additional feedback as we refine route deviations.

TransCanada is proposing to add new natural gas pipeline facilities to the existing Canadian Mainline system in Ontario. These new facilities would be added in sections between Markham and the Township of South Dundas, on the southern arm of the Eastern Triangle. The preliminary scope of the project included the construction of approximately 370 km of pipeline. TransCanada has now finalized contracts with commercial shippers and determined a refined scope in order to ensure the appropriate amount of capacity is constructed to meet TransCanada’s existing and new firm contractual commitments. The proposed project scope now includes approximately 250 km of 36 inch pipeline with the addition of nine new 11 MW compressor units to be installed at five existing compressor stations.

New sports pad opens in east scarborough

The official launch of Scarborough East’s Multi-Sports Pad and Skyo-Swale took place yesterday afternoon. Hosted by The East Scarborough Storefront, the Multi-Sports Pad and Sky-o-Swale were co-created by local youth and architect mentors from archiTEXT in the Kingston-Galloway-Orton (KGO) Park neighbourhood. The multi-sports pad fills the void of a proper recreational space aiming to provide a safer surrounding for children where various sports can be played. The first-of-its-kind Sky-oSwale is an eco-friendly water filtration system that uses rainwater through a green roof to irrigate the Roots of Scarborough East Garden. For more information, visit

Mayor Rob Ford put city employees last week by not following proper procedure after a bomb threat at city hall, their union representative says. The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 79 filed a policy grievance Friday alleging the mayor and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, chose not to respect the city’s policy on such threats. Tim Mcguire, the local’s president, said employees found out there was a threat from media reports. Bomb threats at city hall are supposed to go first to the city manager’s office, which assesses the seriousness of the threat and contacts police. “The policy broke down in a number of ways,” Mcguire said in a press conference. CUPE has contacted the province to ask for an investigation.
