It happened this week in Scarborough as Ontario’s new Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the names of her first cabinet. Wynne made Tracy MacCharles, rookie MPP for PickeringScarborough East, her consumer affairs minister. The post had belonged to Margarett Best, MPP for the adjacent Scarborough-Guildwood riding. Best had been in Dalton McGuinty’s cabinet since she was first elected in 2007, taking on health promotion (later health promotion and sport) before consumer affairs. BEST OUT, MACCHARLES IN

City’s needs must be taken seriously at Queen’s Park
W
ith the swearing-in of Premier Kathleen Wynne earlier this week, and the naming of her new cabinet, Torontonians are right to expect our city to be taken seriously at the highest levels of Ontario’s government. Wynne, the MPP for Don Valley West since 2003 and before that a Toronto District School Board trustee, is the first Ontario premier from Toronto since the NDP’s Bob Rae in 1990. It was Rae’s government that proposed subway lines for both Eglinton and Sheppard avenues, a plan killed by the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris, which was elected in 1995. Maybe this time things will our view be different. Wynne’s cabinet has 27 members, five more It’s time for than there were when Dalton McGuinty prorogued the proprovince to put vincial legislature in October. And the representation from Toronto first Toronto is significant with nine of its members representing Toronto ridings. Adding another five from the surrounding 905 municipalities, that’s a strong voice at the cabinet table for the Greater Toronto Area. Wynne, who served as both an education and transportation minister in McGuinty’s governments, has first-hand knowledge of both those files and we can expect her to make both of them priorities. While the education issue is province-wide, transit is at the top of Toronto’s list. Wynne has recognized that by naming Toronto Centre MPP Glen Murray as minister of both transportation and infrastructure. They understand just how important Toronto’s transit is to the GTA and to the economic health and success of the province, and we’re expecting results. And those results start with funding. Metrolinx must present a report to the premier later this year on how to pay for the $50-billion Big Move transit improvements planned for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Metrolinx is holding consultations with residents as is the City of Toronto’s Feeling Congested meetings, the last of which took place last night at Metro Hall. At the Metrolinx meeting in North York recently, attendees said they wanted construction started and were willing to pay more if that’s what it took. Premier Wynne should be given co-operation from opposition To the editor: Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has a solid vision to run the province without having a snap election. She is very amiable and reconciliatory person, who can adapt and adjust to the situation. I came to know her through Ontario Liberal party circles. I have met her many times at party functions and found her to be a person with confidence, courage and passion to be a leader. I invited her to a function, when she was the education minister and she sent me a personal handwritten letter to thank me. I still have that letter, which has a big souvenir value, now. During her tenure in a
number of different ministries, she held the helm of these ministries in an exemplary manner without giving any room for public insults and kept the reputation of the Dalton McGuinty government as far as these ministries were concerned. There had been some ministries such as health, energy and education during the McGuinty regime that gave the government a bad image even though the premier himself performed extremely well. Wynne has put a new face to her new cabinet with a number of new ministers appointed in some controversial portfolios. All stake holders should get the impression that this is a
brand new team with a new vision and policies. There are a many MPPs in the Liberal caucus who are very capable . I am 100 per cent sure Wynne will get the cooperation needed from the opposition members to complete this term of provincial legislature. Once that term expires, then there should be a provincial election instead of wasting the tax dollars of Ontario residents amounting to about $300 million to call an early election. There is no reason why Wynne cannot succeed as Ontario’s premier. After all,she got the training for mediation from Harvard University. Warren V. Kanagaratnam
To the editor: Re: ‘Students set to take the stage in jazz project,’ News, Feb. 8. We entrust our children to Canada’s public school system for their most important and crucial years of their young lives, and rightly expect our school system will help them grow up to become good lawabiding productive citizens of Canada, knowing they live in Canada and being proud of it. Our children are, still at least in pre-high school grades, taught Canadian history and geography, but when it comes to cultural identity, our education system is and always has been a complete failure. Typical example – yesterday, 240 young impressionable Scarborough students will perform jazz numbers on stage at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Jazz tunes composed by a “legendary” American jazz pianist from New York and to include a solo by another American jazz musician from California. This multi-school jazz festival is an annual event. It is typical of what transpires in all our schools in Canada, whatever the art form, and always has since long before Confederation in 1867. Our school system teaches our Canadian children to grow up performing and admiring mostly American culture and, disdaining Canadian culture by the complete absence and avoidance thereof. Every once in a while we alleged so-called ‘Canadians’ collectively wonder why Canada does not have a common uniting cultural identity of what it means to be Canadian. We scratch our heads asking why our young adults do not think of themselves as being Canadians, nor throughout their lives. Well, our school system’s cultural education departments are the main root cause of the total absence of Canadian culture education. I, as at least one proud Canadian, want to know why this happens? Mid Scarborough Hub hosts VDay event tonight People will be asked to “twist, dance, shout to end violence against women” at a Valentine’s Day party in Scarborough. The “VDay” celebration, part of a worldwide set of events today called One Billion Rising, takes place at The Hub - Mid Scarborough at Eglinton and Brimley roads from 5:30 to 8 p.m. A free reception and performances at the hub are organized by the Forced Marriage Project, as well as I Do! an offshoot program in which young women discuss dating
and healthy relationships. Part of an unnamed documentary about the program will be shown, spoken word poetry performed and the hub will display other art work shared by participants. Statistics for forced (non-consensual) marriage in Canada are hard to come by, but such experiences are not limited to a particular group, said Michelle Davis, the project’s communications co-ordinator. The project gathers information through online surveys, and asks
service providers to find women who need help. Its website (www.fmp-acsa.ca/ home) is equipped with buttons so Internet users can quickly hide the screen or not let others know they visited the site. Sponsored by Agincour t Community Services Association, the project is based at the recentlyopened community hub for the Dorset Park area on Kennedy Road north of Ellesmere Road.

Toronto Public Health (TPH) has achieved the coveted Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) designation from the Breast-feeding Committee for Canada (BCC). The BFI is a worldwide program of the World Health Organization and UNICEF. In Canada, the BFI designation is awarded by the BCC to hospitals and community health services that put policies in place to protect, promote and support breast-feeding.

Looking at term limits for council
O
n Monday, Willowdale Councillor John Filion gave up what for him had been something of a calling – the chairmanship of the Toronto Board of Health. He’d been at it for awhile; but for three years, he’s been the face of public health since amalgamation. And there’s no reason he shouldn’t; after all, aside from a notable gaffe involving food carts, he’s done a pretty good job. And it’s not against the rules. But what if it were? And what if it were against the rules for Filion to even be on council as long as he has? Both are questions that have come up recently around city hall – not about Councillor Filion in particular, but about councillors in general. Should councillors be able to sit on boards and committees, term after term after term? Should councillors be allowed to sit on council for as long as they can get elected? Toronto’s executive committee voted to look

into the former; and two first-term councillors are hoping to convince their colleagues to look at the latter. The executive committee question might get answered. But it’s unlikely the motion coming forward from Mary-Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson to look at a threeterm limit for councillors will pass. There are rather too many councillors in Filion’s position. If they voted for term limits, they’d be voting themselves out of a job next election. It’s too bad, because the heart of the McMahon/ Robinson motion is not an ageist attack on long-inthe-tooth politicians. What it is, is a recognition – and repudiation – of a sad reality: that Toronto Council
has become balkanized, where old political feuds routinely drown out intelligent debate. Wiping the slate clean of those old feuds by removing all those old politicians would undeniably be effective. As with many effective plans, it would also be a little anti-democratic. Over the years, career councillors have become formidably skilled in seeing through policies and projects that make the city better. Sometimes, those ugly fights on the floor of council are necessary evils. side of a band room, whether in elementary school or high school, can create a sense of belonging. It is also a place where students not involved in sports or other activities can gather. Children who move a lot due to a parent's work may find that joining the marching band or participation in the choir is the one portion of school that is familiar no matter where they attend
school. While neighborhoods may change and teachers differ from school to school, music can be a reliable constant. While not every child will go on to be the next, great musical sensation, thanks to music education, he or she will have learned lessons in working as a team and other social benefits that will help in all areas of life. –MS

He finds an ally in Anthony (Matthew Hyslop), who notices Johanna in the window of the Turpin’s home, and the two devise a plan to free her. There are a lot of creepy things going on in this story, and the show is ideal for fans of the genre. But murder, indecencies to, and consumption of, human bodies aside, this production is extremely well-done and boasts an amazing ensemble cast. The ramblings of a crazed beggar woman (Elizabeth Van Wyck), who is saner than one may perceive, acts as a truth

teller and adds another amazingly eerie element to this show. The musical numbers ranged from haunting, as seen in the opening number The Ballad of Sweeney Todd to the jovial number God, That’s Good in which the townspeople sing as they enjoy their “special ingredient” pies. The set is simple, except for the ingenious chair/trap door contraption that drops the bodies to the bakery below and to the realisticlooking oven where the pies are baked. There are so many standout performances, including Burke-Kleinman and Hyslop singing Johanna and Anthony’s duet, Kiss Me. Their voices pair well, and BurkeKleinman’s falsetto voice is beautiful. Silzer gives a chilling performance of the evil Judge Turpin, and induces shivers in his creepy number entitled Johanna. Mitchell is commanding and strong in his performance of Sweeney Todd, and embodies his murderous, twisted character, well. He also has a powerful singing voice that’s perfectly complements in scenes with Hurst, who is amazing as Mrs. Lovett. The pair’s scenes together were some of the best in the show. This show will make you cringe and laugh, and has an ending you won’t soon forget.

Macabre takes on a whole new meaning in the delightfully dark story about a man who decides to exact a unique style of revenge in Scarborough Music Theatre’s latest show, Sweeney Todd. A high energy, wellexecuted and extremely entertaining performance is given by this group that takes audiences on a journey into the minds of a murderous couple and some of the twisted minds in this 1846, London, England, tale. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, some may know this story by the 2007 film version starring Johnny Depp, who is known for taking outlandish roles. The stage version is no less bizarre. Having been wrongly imprisoned, Benjamin Barker returns to London as Sweeney Todd (Andrew Mitchell), and after hearing the fate of his wife, Lucy, who committed suicide after being raped by Judge Turpin (Jason Silzer), Sweeney decides Turpin must pay with his life. Out for blood, Sweeney feels others in town must pay as well, and decides to re-open the barber shop he once ran as a cover-up for his murderous plans. Instead of a cut or a shave, he will slit their throats. In any story of revenge and

Fratelli Village Pizzeria in Highland Creek Village, refurbished after a devastating fire last May, was hit by an apparent arsonist Tuesday morning just hours before it was to reopen. At 4:15 a.m., Toronto firefighters, alerted by a smoke detector in the main dining room, “found a small fire which was isolated to one table,” said Cpt. Adrian Ratushniak, a public information officer for the department. The fire left $10,000 in damages, and it stopped the re-opening the Old Kingston Road restaurant had planned for that day. Toronto police have posted a security camera image of a suspect (shown here www.torontopolice.on.ca/newsreleases/pdfs/25686.pdf) in what they and the fire service are calling a suspected arson.
The man in the image is described as white, slim, 30 to 40 years old and wearing a dark hoodie, pants and shoes. Investigators are asking anyone who has information or was driving in the area of Old Kingston and Morrish Road and saw anything out of the ordinary to call police at 416-808-4300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477. Police had not considered the previous fire last May as suspicious. An outpouring of community support followed the blaze, encouraging the owners to rebuild. On Wednesday, a voicemail said the restaurant is currently closed. “We will reopen soon, details to follow,” the message said. – Mike Adler

SIU probes shooting of man at apartment A man was shot and wounded by a police officer Sunday in an apartment south of Hwy 401 and east of McCowan Road. The incident on the eighth floor of 1 Lee Centre Dr. was quickly placed under the jurisdiction of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit which were called by the Toronto Police Service to an apartment in the building at 6:50 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10. When police arrived, stated the arms-length provincial agency in a release, there was an interaction between officers and a male, one officer fired his pistol and a man, age 31, was
sent to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with a gunshot wound. Media reports and Twitter comments said a woman with stab wounds to her neck was also carried out of the apartment unit. The SIU, tasked with investigating all cases of serious injury caused by police in Ontario, said it assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to look into the incident. Anyone with information about this case is being asked to call the lead investigator at 416641-1866.
n Arrest in bank robberies
Toronto police arrested a 30-year-old man and charged him with the robberies of five banks along Danforth Avenue and one in Scarborough’s Eglinton Square, a mall at Victoria Park Avenue. The robberies all occurred between the previous Friday, Feb. 1 and 4. Police had described each robbery as the work of one man who fled with some cash. In each case, the suspect was said to have approached employees with a note and demanded cash.

Though hospital administrators pledge emergency rooms at both campuses will still run around the clock: 109 doctors, a dentist and an oral surgeon associated with the hospital signed a letter warning the division of services (complex and longer-stay surgery will go to the General) will cause the smaller Birchmount to deteriorate. The letter warns Scarborough north of Hwy. 401 eventually “would be left with a glorified walk-in clinic,” because “acute care services could no longer be safely performed there.” Organizers of the petition noted it was similar to another, signed by many of the same physicians and sent to administrators in 2006, when the hospital proposed moving pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology from the Grace to the General. “Nothing has changed in terms of our communities’ needs for acute care. Yet we are again staring down the barrel of proposals that are dangerous to the health of our communities,” said the 2013 letter, which argues consolidating maternal and newborn care at either campus will leave it “substandard.” Tom Chan, TSH chief of staff and an emergency specialist, said hospital executives aren’t taking the concerns lightly. “We have absolutely no intention to de-vitalize any of our campuses,” he said, adding doctors and other TSH caregivers “will be engaged at the service-delivery level” to ensure access and quality of care is maintained. Change is being forced upon the hospital, and Chan said he is asking its caregivers to help. “I need them to be in there. This is the fiscal reality. This is what we can afford.” TSH doesn’t have an interventional cardiology program, since it relies on Code Stemi at Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary campus. “They’re on call to us 24/7 and we have immediate acceptance to our patients,” Chan said. Display boards at Monday’s session explained TSH had already consolidated its palliative care and mental health units into single campuses, suggesting results for patients have, if anything, improved as a result. Where the consolidated birthing centres, re-branded as a Centre of Excellence for Women and Children’s Health, would go is still undetermined. TSH must cut $17 million by April to balance its budget. The hospital has said it will do this through “a mix of operational efficiencies and changes to program scope and size,” including changes to where services are.

Hospital names new CEO Robert Biron to replace retiring Dr. John Wright The Scarborough Hospital has chosen a chartered accountant from Northumberland County to lead it through challenging times. Robert Biron “is exactly the leader The Scarborough Hospital needs to shepherd us through the changes we will need to make as a hospital in this era of healthcare transformation,” Stephen Smith, TSH board chairperson said in a release. Biron resigned last Thursday as CEO of Northumberland Hills, a hospital east of Toronto he had led since 2008, just before TSH announced his appointment in Scarborough. His profile on the No r t h u m b e r l a n d Hi l l s website said Biron has worked in the health care sector for more than 20 years, including at the Medbuy Corporation, a national purchasing group for hospitals, and at a Georgetown long-
term-care facility, the Bennett Health Care Centre. The TSH release said Biron’s term begins on June 1, meaning he won’t be CEO during public consultations on the future of programs at both hospital campuses this month or when hospital directors pass a 2013 budget requiring some $17 million in cuts.

West Hill hosts February Freeze this weekend The West Hill Minor Hockey Association will host its third annual February Freeze house league tournament this Friday through Sunday. And luckily for organizers the weather is forecast to be seasonally cold, but with no great amount of snow predicted to mess things up, such as was the case last weekend. About 60 teams, at the house league level, will compete in divisions from tyke through to midget, all closing out with Sunday’s slate of championship games. Of the nine divisions from tyke to juvenile, SHA teams managed to win two of them (novice 8 and peewee) and finish as finalist in another two (bantam and junior-midget).
