Junior Carnival Parade set for Saturday ANGELINE MAIR amair@insidetoronto.com

The Pan Am Path’s “art relay” crosses into Scarborough this week bringing a month of interesting events with it – if you know where to look. Now that the Games are underway and the Parapan Games are almost here, the Path (www.panampath.org) hasn’t got much time to fulfill its mission of uniting Toronto, one installation or performance at a time. Using Toronto’s existing trails, it’s been generating art events on a weekly basis, and the final ones will be in Scarborough. First event The first of these this Friday, will help people understand why a Centennial College building appears to be giving advice. A new mural, forming a reflective band around a structure on the College’s Ashtonbee campus, can be seen from Warden Avenue. It faces a Hydro corridor that is part of the Path and instructs onlookers to “READ BETWEEN THE POWER LINES LOOK UP CLOSER.” Done by west-end artist Sean Martindale in collaboration with Yvan McKinnon and students from Centennial and Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, its message changes with your vantage point. >>>FULL-DAY, page 18

The Junior Carnival Parade will be making a return to Scarborough again this Saturday after last year’s success.

Denise Herrera-Jackson, CEO, Scotiabank Toronto Caribean Carnival said the event’s return in 2014 to Scarborough was successful and it’s back in the community again. “Last year was a trial and

it did really well,” she said, speaking at a launch event at the Malvern Town Centre last month. She invited everyone to “come out and enjoy and have fun,” in Scarborough again this year.

Jordan Belchos seizes gold in roller sports speed skating Change of venue for Pan Am Games’ roller sports a blessing for Scarborough school

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Jordan Belchos recognized a “now-or-never moment” Monday, and it got him Canada’s only roller sports speed skating medal of the 2015 Pan Am Games. It was that, and his ability to bear down and keep skating after he broke away from the pack in the latter half of a punishing 10,000-metre points race. Born in Scarborough and raised in North York, Belchos, 26, was being outskated by other competitors during the first half. They kept “dumping” him – overtaking him on the straightaway of a track newly refurbished for the Games at Saint John Paul II Catholic Secondary School – as Belchos tried again and again to finish laps in a position to score points. ‘Man, these guys are better than I thought,’” he recalled thinking. But Belchos also realized the pack was slowing down. Then, Mike Paez of Mexico broke into the lead. “I saw him go, and I saw them not chase him,” said Belchos, who saw this was his chance: “It’s now or never. I’ve got to do it now.” Paez reached the line and got another two points, but Belchos, as that lap’s secondplace finisher, put up one point, and then another on the next lap. And then another. As Canadian fans cheered, he kept following the leader Paez and moving up the standings until the final lap, where Belchos also finished in second position. Those last two points for the Canadian in the race’s 25th lap weren’t enough to take silver away from Colombia’s Juan Sebastian Sanz Neira, but they won

Scarborough’s Jordan Belchos races in the Pan Am Games roller sports-speed skating 10,000 m points final on Friday at St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School track. Belchos went on to place third and take the bronze medal.

insidetoronto.com/toronto-events/pan-am-games Belchos the bronze. “I know my fitness is up there with those guys,” he added afterwards. A medal was all the sweeter coming a few kilometres from where he was born, at the Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary campus. Belchos grew up in North York, where his family moved when he was two. They later moved to Thornhill, and Belchos now studies at the University of Alberta in Calgary. “This is big for roller sports in Canada,” said his father, Mike Belchos, adding his son started as an inline skater at age eight or nine before being recruited by Own the Podium to skate on ice. It is first time Canadians have won a roller sports

speed skating medal, he said. When it comes to competitive inline skating at this level, Canadian competitors don’t nearly have the experience South or Central American athletes at the Games could draw on. In the women’s 10,000 metre points race on Monday, Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Quebec, finished seventh, with one point. “It was a tough mission,” she said afterwards. “It was hard to make the good decision on when to go and where to go.” The Colombians – who took five of six roller sports-speed skating golds at the previous Pan Ams in Guadalajara, Mexico – did not disappoint until the women’s 10,000 when

Johana Viveros Mondragon fell early in the race and did not finish. Maira Arias of Argentina then won easily, finishing with a gap of more than 30 points beyond silver medalist Emma Clare Townshend of Ecuador. U.S. skater Darian O’Neil was third.

People across Toronto can talk about whether these Pan Am Games were worth something to them. Children, parents and other Scarborough residents near Saint John Paul II Catholic Secondary School have their answer already. Games organizers, in making the eleventh-hour decision to move their roller sports speed skating venue onto the school’s aging track, did something no one else could. Toronto’s Pan Ams restored the track, and the school’s javelin and long jump pits were also redone. “Sometimes things just work out for the best,” John Yan, a spokesperson for the city’s Catholic school board, said Monday, as the final inline speed events took place. After a quarter-century, the track was usable but clearly not state-of-the-art, Yan said. But after a $250,000 investment by the Games, state-ofthe-art is what the Military Trail school and its 1,387 students gets. “It’s a no-brainer to enter this type of use agreement,” said Yan. “Games of this calibre don’t come to a Canadian

Columbia’s Armando Causil leads the pack and eventually wins the Roller Sports-Speed Skating men’s 500 metre gold medal Monday at Saint John Paul II Secondary School.

city very often.” The board has a backlog of repairs and improvements. Normally, it concentrates on things like a school roof, windows and boilers – things Yan said relate to student safety. Refurbishing an outdoor track would be low on the list. Originally, Saint JP II was merely chosen as a training track for the roller sports events, and the venue was 800 metres away, beside the Pan Am Sports Centre on Morningside Avenue. As the Games approached, though, organizers decided to make a late move that would give the school an unexpected, lasting benefit. John Craig, the Games’ venue general manager, said it was just 86 days ago that he called the school’s principal, Michael Wetzel. “He was enthusiastic from the moment we said hello,” Craig said beside the track on Monday afternoon. Apart from on Monday, when summer classes had to be cancelled, there was no disruption to the school. People from the nearby Seven Oaks community who have regularly walked on the track, were also pleased. “It used to be rough. Now, it’s smooth,” said Tony Angeles. “We don’t mind having this all of the time,” he added with a laugh during Monday’s events. Kathy Ristevski, who also lives nearby, said the Games have proven to be good for her neighbourhood. “At least the taxes we pay go somewhere,” she said, adding Games organizers should get credit for accomplishing such a big job. – Mike Adler

hen a gun falls into the hands of a child or a teen, the blame for it cannot be placed on one person. It’s a community’s collective failure to provide opportunities, outreach and ongoing dialogue for these youth that allows gun culture to take root around them. For there to be a meaningful change, it has to be more than just the police coming to the door and patrolling the streets. There needs to be change fostered from within these neighbourhoods, but it has to happen in tangent with support from those on the who may have the means our view outside to help keep up the momentum. The Jamestown community in Collectively north Etobicoke is mourning the loss of 14-year-old Lecent Ross, we can do who died from a gunshot wound in a friend’s home last week. Though something police continue to investigate and have not laid charges, nor said who fired the gun, they did say the weapon was an illegal, semi-automatic handgun – a .40-calibre Smith & Wesson. Lecent was the third resident on this particular street to be killed by a gun in the past two years. Pastor Allan Bowen, of Abundant Life Assembly in north Etobicoke, told Metroland Media Toronto his community needs saving from drugs, guns and gangs. He says they need a champion to come forward to change the community’s fate. And while the police have their obvious role in eradicating crime from these areas, there are other players that need to come to the table. We, the media, need to keep the spotlight on these issues and these communities. It defeats the purpose of serving the broader, public good when we swoop in on tragedy and fly out at the first sniff of the next breaking news story. Politicians can help push for change within government. They can secure funding for community investment and investment in at-risk youth. But their actions rely significantly on the will of the people. And it’s people who live outside of these neighbourhoods who need to start caring. There are world issues that get more support than the problems happening in our own backyard. This is our city’s problem and these people need our support.

column

The Pan Am Games are picking up steam I have to admit I never paid much attention to the Pan Am Games before, including the two times they were in Winnipeg, in 1999 and 1967. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of the Pan An Games in 1967, let alone that they were going to be staged in Canada. Back then, amateur sports in this country didn’t have the visibility they do now. Compounding matters was that the big push during our centennial year was for the world’s fair, Expo 67, held in Montreal. Expo 67 was a great experience. We went there on a family vacation and I still have souvenirs from it tucked away. But given that I played just about every sport imaginable when I was growing up and was obsessed with sports 24/7 – my parents always claimed it was a lot closer to 28/7 – if amateur sports had the same profile back then as they do today, I likely would have lobbied my folks for

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY a trip to catch the Pan Am Games instead of Expo 67 considering Winnipeg, like Montreal, was just a hop, skip and flight away. Flash forward to the present. Well, the Pan An Games have got my attention. Not my undivided attention, mind you. There’s no such thing anymore it seems, particularly in a city of this size. There are always a lot of great festivals and activities going on in Toronto at this time of year and the list keeps expanding. Throw in trying to keep up with the exploits of the Blue Jays, TFC and the Argos and all of the off-season moves of the Leafs and Raptors. Well, we’ve got our summer hands full around here. But, the Pan Am Games have the majority of my attention. I still don’t know what they’re all about exactly, but

I’m learning quickly. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the benefits of having such a spectacle just around the corner. There are numerous by-products of being part of a host city. Topping that list are a generous amount of free festivities complementing the paid ones, so the huge number of people who don’t have the wherewithal to put the word “only” in front of $20 when talking about ticket prices can feel as much a part of the excitement as those who can afford to be in the stands. There is much speculation that these Pan Am Games are a dress rehearsal for an Olympic bid for 2024. But I don’t think any of us are in need of a run-through. I sure don’t need any help. I know the Olympic spectator script by heart. I’ve been following it on cue since Friday night. I was glued to the TV for the opening ceremonies. I’m checking the updates regularly to see how the

Canadian athletes are doing and keeping a close eye on where Canada sits in the overall medal standings. At night I’m watching the highlights of all our medalists. Over and over and over. And I’m getting chills seeing our smiling athletes waving to the adoring crowd. With the Games in town, I also get the added bonus of being able to catch a couple of live events and take in a few freebies. Yeah, though we’re just a week in, I’m already in fine Olympic spectator spirit form. But admittedly, I’ve still got a little work to do. You see, I’m determined by the time the closing ceremonies arrive, once and for all, I’ll finally have Pan Am spectator spirit down pat, too. HARPER’S CONSERVATIVES ARE BLEEDING OUR PUBLIC SERVICES. The Harper Conservative government’s vision for Canada’s future? Cuts, cuts, and more cuts. Canada’s border security services? Slashed. Canada’s environmental protection services? Sliced. Canada’s food safety services? Butchered. Veterans Affairs? Nine Veterans Affairs offices shut down and front-line services gone. Canadians who paid into Employment Insurance denied benefits. Canada’s public search and rescue services? Systematically dismantled. Essential public services threatened without regard for the safety and welfare of millions of Canadians.

ried to Magda (Erin Jones), who is the opposite if Harriet, a vibrant and energetic woman, so his days with Harriet are amazing, so much so he wants to leave his wife and be with her. However, unbeknownst to Gordon, there is another man in Harriet’s life, Alec (David Borwick), who is also unhappily married to Mildred (Meg Gibson). He also provides Harriet a monthly allowance and is there on the days Gordon is not. Harriet, having been married before, has no desire to be married again or have either of them leave their wives. She is happy being a mistress and runs a tight ship to keep the two apart. She uses her “mummy” as an escape plan when there’s a threat of the two men colliding. When her oldest friend Anne ( Jean Ireton) shows up, freshly separated from her husband Richard (Scott Simpson) and needs a place to stay, things start to unravel in Harriet’s world. Gordon shows up on Alec’s

While being a kept woman may not be the most moral way to live, it can be a beneficial one. How e v e r, i n t h e Scarborough Players’ final show of the season, one woman realizes that with all its benefits being the mistress of two men cannot only be challenging, but downright exhausting. A hilarious and well-written comedic farce by John Chapman and Dave Freeman, Key for Two is the ideal show to end a great season, with amazing performances, laughter and lightheartedness. Set in the 1980s in the flat of Harriet (Carolyn Tutchener) in Brighton, England, the show opens with her and her lover, Gordon (Ryan Wilson), starting the day by organizing some details. This includes what needs fixing around the house, scheduling their trysts and of course, Harriet’s monthly allowance for rent. Gordon is unhappily mar-

day, hurts his leg, which leaves him stuck there on ‘Alec’s day.’ Now it’s up to Anne to help Harriet navigate the situation so she doesn’t get caught. To make matters worse, the wives and Richard end up there, and they have to be creatively deceptive to keep everyone none-the-wiser of the truth. This show boasts an amazing cast who each have excellent comedic talent and timing. Tutchener is fantastic as the unapologetic mistress, and she remains charming and funny throughout her whole ordeal. This play has a great cast, set and direction, and is the perfect show to have a laugh. Remaining Key for Two performances are: today to July 18 at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $20. Performances are at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd.

about the project. In 2009, however, city council approved the sale of what it considered surplus land to Habitat. Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford acknowledged “considerable opposition” to the project last August and tried to have the nine-home proposal voted down. Habitat said preparation of the site is scheduled to begin next month.

It is the cottage for a lot of people in my area,” the councillor said. Toronto council voted to accept the donation at its July meeting.

Uber has launched a new carpooling service in Toronto to take advantage of projected congestion levels during the Pan Am Games. From now until July 26 UberPool allows users of its contentious UberX rideshare service to split fare costs with a fellow customer headed in the same direction. The service has been around since 2014 in five cities including San Francisco and Paris, and Uber claims it has led to “thousands” of users making use of it more than five times a week. Uber is also promising the carpooling option will make use of the temporary HOV lanes installed for the Games on major roadways. That will not be music to the ears of Toronto taxi drivers who’ve opposed Uber’s operations from the start. PETITION COLLECTS NAMES FOR BIKE LANES With Toronto council

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT endorsing the expansion of bike lanes on Adelaide and Richmond streets, attention from the city’s cycling community has shifted to Bloor Street. The street has long been an aspiration for cycling activists looking for a major east-west lane network, but adding lanes has faced opposition from some storefront business owners who fear a loss of street parking will negatively affect bottom-lines. But that hasn’t stopped nearly 860 people from signing a CycleTO petition calling for a pilot lane on Bloor by 2016, and for the street to be included within the city’s 10-year framework for cycling. You can view the petition via CycleTO’s website www.cycleto.ca MOBILE USERS GET SUBWAY CELL ACCESS wWIND WIND mobile users will now be able to use their phones at every TTC station

on the U subway Loop. The company became the first-and so far onlymobile provider to sign up to provide cellular access in the subway system. Now with this week’s announcement, cellphone reception will be available within 18 downtown stations, though not on the trains themselves. offers eLECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING wikea

IKEA will install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Canadian stores including its two Toronto locations. The move is expected to take place by the end of August and two stations will be available per store, the company announced last week in a statement. EV use is slowly growing in Canada with top brands including the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and the stylish Tesla Model S. Around 10,650 cars were sold from 2011-2014. said Nastassia Parson, its general manager. “It’s been a whirlwind in the past few days,” Parson added this week. The July 25 event (a rain date is July 26) starts with a 1 p.m. parade from the Scarborough Museum at the park’s south end which anyone can join - provided they learn its “flash mob” routine, taught at the museum on Wednesdays. Performances are from 2 to 3 p.m., with activities in the park afterwards. The relay doesn’t end as the summer continues and the Parapan Games take over. Its next event, called Fairgrounds, is on both Aug. 4 and 5 off Old Kingston Road, in a ravine north of the Parapan tennis venue. From 5 to 7:30 p.m. on both days, Fairgrounds is on land of the University of Toronto Scarborough campus and features performances on Aug. 4 by the UTSC Alumni and Community Choir and a bike tour with UTSC Principal

Bruce Kidd. On Aug. 5, there’s First Nations storytelling with U of T Indigenous Elder in Residence Cat Criger, a “theatrical interpretation” of the Fairgrounds and a studentled discovery walk. The impressive full-day finale of the entire art relay is Maadaadizi, or Summer Journeys, at Scarborough’s Rouge Beach on Aug. 15. Family activities - including workshops on drumming and singing, hoop dance and lantern making - start at noon and continue until 6 p.m. The First Nation-themed programming continues at 8 p.m. but the real showpiece of Maadaadizi (a word meaning “begin a journey” in Ojibwe) is the multimedia and multidisciplinary performance by Jason Baerg, The Great Chief Star, which explores the cosmology of the Cree people. - Mike Adler

Parade returned to Scarborough last year >>>from page 1 The parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Malvern Community Centre, which is at 30 Sewells Rd. The parade will exit on to McLevin Avenue travelling west on McLevin Avenue, north on Neilson Road and ends at the Neilson Park, which is at 1575 Neilson Rd. The judging will take place along the route just prior to the Neilson Park entrance. The party continues in

the park with “Last Lap in De Park” and will include music and a junior showcase sponsored by Organization of Calypso Per for ming Artistes. There will be children’s activities, a marketplace, vendors and more. At the Malvern Town Centre launch, toddlers and teens donned colourful costumes for the kick off of the Junior Carnival Parade at Malvern Town Centre today.

Kevin Carrington on air traffic reporter and master of ceremonies, said, “The real stars are the young masqueraders.” One of the first performers on stage who caught the crowd’s attention and inspired everyone to start clapping and cheering is 10-year-old Jada Rajaram who is part of the Toronto Revellers. She thrilled the audience with her dancing and bright orange and red costume. The Scarborough

resident says “I get to express how I feel in my dances.” She also said she likes performing because she gets to enjoy herself and the music. The mall was filled with all the spectacular sights you’d expect from the Caribana Parade only a miniture version of dancers wearing head dresses with massive brightly coloured feathers, as the sequence and glitter glowed off their tiny dancing bodies.

Press conference just part of story An epiphany came upon the city hall press gallery Tuesday, after Scarborough Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis finished a morning news conference offering a scaremongering interpretation of the Highway Traffic Act. It was not that Karygiannis was being irresponsible when he warned Torontonians and visitors they could be fined up to $20,000 for booking an Uber ride. He was being irresponsible, of course, selectively reading sub-clauses from the Act to conflate the responsibility of a customer with that of a driver and dispatcher. It was straightforward work for journalists at the event to dismantle that fallacy. Had Karygiannis consulted a lawyer in coming to this position? He had not. Had he spoken with the police about the likelihood of such charges being laid against passengers booking a ride with the Uber app? He had written them but not heard back. Had he heard of anyone in any jurisdiction being charged for calling an Uber cab? No.

david nickle the city The epiphany didn’t have much to do with Karygiannis. It had to do with us. The fact is that while the councillor and former Liberal MP was twisting facts, cameras were rolling and his words were going out live on CP24 across the Greater Toronto Area. And before anyone got a chance to ask any questions – including CP24’s own journalists – Karygiannis had the floor. And that is the epiphany: the institutionalization of liveTV coverage of press events has made it easier than ever for demagoguery to take hold. The Ford brothers used live television news conferences to great effect, shouting down reporters who challenged assertions that were flat-out and self-evidently wrong. Former councillor Doug Ford was a master at this liveTV obfustication, often picking out a particular journalist

by name, and insisting their questions were inspired by personal animosity to his poor brother Rob Ford, the mayor. One wonders how much of Ford Nation is comprised of people waiting to get the keys to their car from the muffler shop, watching half or twothirds of these oh-so-distorted spectacles? Karygiannis’ bit of mischief will likely have a similar but smaller effect, driving uninformed visitors and inattentive Torontonians from Uber cars to the waiting arms of Toronto’s licensed taxi drivers, a group that has enjoyed the unwavering support of Karygiannis. Others, who read newspapers, watch news conferences to the end and partake of the good, balanced work broadcast journalists do piecing the story together for newscasts, won’t be so easily fooled. But that’s just damage control. The medium has already delivered its message.
