Completing Edgewalk on CN Tower a ‘fearless’ tribute
“
SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com
O
n a trip to Chicago in July 2013, Wes Grant of Scarborough received a phone call that changed everything. His wife, Tara Cowan had been diagnosed with cancer. “My whole life had been turned upside down, too much had changed,” said Grant. After a two-year struggle, at 5:37 a.m. on Nov. 6, 2014, Grant received a second life-altering phone call. Ten minutes later, Grant arrived at the hospital, but Tara had already died. “The nurse was just standing there waiting for me and that was when I knew. I like to think that Tara didn’t want me there for that,” he said. Tara was just 39 years old. “The first two or three months I couldn’t remember anything about her, but the hospital. That scared me. It was just her in the hospital,” Grant said. “She went through a lot.” To help with the grieving process, Grant decided to sign-up for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Fearless Challenge. “It’s the silly things you regret. When I think of regrets, it’s the stupid little things. She always wanted to do karaoke and I look back now and I think; ‘Why didn’t I just go?’ It would have just made her happy,” said Grant. No more fears. No more regrets. “It’s almost like if I went back to the same routine I would be trivi-
If I can get Tara’s story out and inspire someone to get through their cancer journey, that’s good. – Wes Grant

alizing what she went through,” said Grant. Taking part in the Fearless Challenge was cathartic, he said. Grant stared down his aversion to heights by participating in the EdgeWalk at the top of the CN Tower. “In the beginning I was very hesitant, but by the end I was totally into it,” he said. “Afterwards, all I could think was; ‘Oh my God, what did I just do?” The Canadian Cancer Society kicked-off the Fearless Challenge in 2014 to raise funds for research and support services for patients. Canadians over the age of 13 can participate by taking their idea to the Fearless Challenge website and clicking on the
“create a challenge” link. Challengers are able to set their own fundraising goals and deadlines and chart their progress. Facing his fears through the Fearless Challenge has propelled Grant into various other life changing experiences. In September, Grant will be returning to school. He has enrolled in the Workplace Health and Wellness program at Centennial College. “I had this feeling that I needed to get into a field that gives back,” Grant said. “Tara was a social worker, her job was helping people with mental health issues and she was always helping others. It’s my way of honouring her.”
The biggest reward the Fearless Challenge has given Grant is the ability to share Tara’s story. “It allows me to keep her memory alive.” People don’t know how to talk about cancer, said Grant. It’s a different experience going though it as a caregiver, he said. “You put aside your own feelings. All I was doing was making sure she was as pain free as possible.” Facing his fears has opened up a world of opportunity for Grant. Fearless Challenge, more education, new job prospects, and self-improvement are his focus. “I think of what would Tara want me to do? She would be so pissed off at me, she would be so
angry if I just gave up,” Grant said. Now, Grant has regained his ability to remember Tara. He said he remembers the little things that made him smile. “I tried to surprise her by making dinner and I was stirring the pot with a spoon. She wanted to help, so she grabbed the spoon out of my hand and started to do it. I grabbed the spoon as well. So we were both literally yanking the spoon back and forth fighting over who was going to stir the pasta. “And then we both stopped and looked at each other and burst out laughing. It became a running gag over the years, if there was an argument happening, one of us would grab the wooden spoon and we would both start to laugh,” he said. The Fearless Challenge has inspired Grant so much that he is already planning for next year’s stunt: jumping out of a plane. “If I can get Tara’s story out and inspire someone to get through their cancer journey, that’s good,” said Grant.

TIFF In Your Park visits Chester Le neighbourhood The Toronto International Film Festival is coming to Chester Le this week, way out of its usual downtown neighbourhood. Through a free program called TIFF In Your Park, the festival is screening Breakup Buddies, a 2014 Chinese film, outdoors in Chester Le Park at 9:15 p.m. this Friday.
The film, which follows some child-friendly sports and activities, may not be appropriate for young children. It’s rated 14A, and TIFF describes it as a “raunchy romantic comedy.” The TIFF In Your Park program includes films that have played at the festival during its 40-year his-
tory. Nicole Laoutaris, a spokesperson, said TIFF selected Breakup Buddies with the Friends of Chester Le Park and Agincourt Community Service Association, “as they indicated that having a Chinese-language film was a priority for their community.” In the park, which is on Chester
Le Boulevard near Morecambe Gate, there will also be face-painting, a photo booth, and community games such as soccer, badminton, and tug-of-war taking place. The fun is slated to start around 6:30 p.m., Nayef Abu Qaddum, an ACSA representative said this week.

Take ‘Toronto’ sign on tour after Pan Am Games

ast week, Mayor John Tory took to Twitter to ask Torontonians where the ‘Toronto’ sign, now in front of Nathan Phillips Square, should travel
next. Ideas for where the huge multi-coloured sign will be accepted until the end of the Parapan Am Games (Aug. 15) and should be Tweeted to @JohnTory with the hashtag #TORONTOsign The fun social media campaign is looking to crowdsource ideas for where the sign should be placed next – it’s scheduled to stay in front of Toronto City Hall until the end of the year. In a short video introducing the campaign, Tory cites places such as High Park, YongeDundas Square, and even jokes about putting the sign outside the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, home of the NHL’s Senators. Suggestions and photographs our view with the sign plunked somewhere in Toronto have started coming in: Build unity the new George Brown Campus, the Scarborough Bluffs, a resiby sharing dential neighbourhood, and even our sign perched atop the CN Tower. Some ideas are funny, others logical, and some just ridiculous. However, what this sign does offer Torontonians is a way to weigh in on how the city can connect. It’s one city, so the #TORONTOsign should visit every corner of Toronto. It would be a great way to build unity across the city. Imagine coming upon the sign in Mel Lastman Square, at Artscape Wychwood Barns, or the Guild Inn Park. Maybe as an entry point along the major highways coming into the city. How about walking along Queen Street in Parkdale and coming upon the sign at the amphitheatre at Dufferin Street? Maybe Councillor Norm Kelly is right, and the sign could sit above the Scarborough Bluffs looking out across Lake Ontario. How about Sunnyside Beach, the Financial District, Todmorden Mills or the Junction train platform? Toronto is considered a city within a park so why not do a travelling park tour? One thing is certain: the sign, installed for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, shouldn’t outstay its welcome. It should be on a tour of the city until it lets Torontonians feel they have connected with other Torontonians. This tour could pique interest in other areas of the city many people have not seen. It’s tough to get the west to travel east, or the north to head south. But, a #TORONTOsign might jump-start that migration.
column
Hoping Pan Am Games can stick the landing The moment the closing ceremonies for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games conclude Sunday night, discussion will begin in earnest about what Torontonians will take home with them from the Pan An movement. I’m hoping that all of the Games’ inherent messages are taken to heart, starting with a rediscovery of the joy of movement itself. A growing fascination with being glued to screens day and night is leading to a sedentary lifestyle for far too many. But, judging by the expressions on the faces of the young kids looking on in the crowds, it seems that seeing Canadian athletes running, swimming, diving, splashing, pedaling, riding, skating, grappling, boarding, jumping around – and grinning from ear to ear while doing it all – is being perceived as a very appealing alternative. Imagine that. Physical activity is cool again. Take that, technology. Another potential boon
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY from the Games is that single-tasking, which existed once upon a time but was never actually called that, could also be on the verge of making a big comeback. The original concept of multi-tasking was to be able to work on several projects simultaneously while giving equal effort to all. But that was before we were at the beck and call – and text – of intruding portable devices. Since then, multi-tasking has been downgraded from positive enhancement to negative distraction and quality has had to take a back seat to quantity. Athletes know better than to be preoccupied with anything other than what they have to do while on the job. It’s called being focused. If their minds wander for a fraction of a second it can mean the difference between success and failure.
The impressive number of medals that Canada has earned here has provided these Games with the perfect platform to repeatedly drive that point home. But the potential offshoot from these Games I’m rooting for most is an appreciation for the value of teamwork. Sadly, few seem to be able to relate to that concept in this day and age. But athletes can. They are taught from day one about its importance. Teamwork is part and parcel of the mission statement of every sport. I’m not just talking team sports either, such as baseball, softball, soccer and rugby that we have been witnessing since retired NBA superstar and future Hall of Famer Steve Nash lit the Games cauldron. I’m also referring to the individual sports we’ve been watching, such as golf, boxing and wrestling. Listen to the athletes in any of the Pan Am sports and they’ll all speak enthu-
siastically about the commitment they make and the pride they feel representing their local teams, their Pan Am team and the biggest team of all, their country. It’s also readily apparent that simply putting on the uniforms of each team they represent is enough to fill them with inspiration. The Pan Am Games have flown by so quickly. It would be a shame if this message has not sunk in yet. But there’s plenty of time. There are still a few days left and the Parapan Am Games, which begin on Aug. 7, are just around the corner. All the same attributes just discussed will be on display there, too. The names and events may change, but the stories will be just as uplifting. I have a feeling the best is yet to come. Pondering a new role for UP Express
N
ext week, the tunnel connecting the mainland to Billy Bishop Airport on the Toronto Islands will be open to the air-travelling public — becoming the second piece of air-travel infrastructure to come online in Toronto this year. The first opened its doors less than a month ago — the Union-Pearson Express train service running from Union Station through Weston to Pearson International Airport. It is telling that these two pieces — one privately funded and the other using federal and provincial dollars — are providing transportation services to people with passports and plane tickets and cash. Meanwhile, transit improvements for the rest of us, simply trying to get around town day-to-day, plod along at their own pace, in the best case fully funded and at worst pie-inthe-sky political dreams. It is in this context that I
david nickle the city look at the TTCriders’ suggestion last weekend, that Metrolinx simply give up the Union Pearson Express as a mass-transit route, with a bit more sympathy than usual. The advocacy group based their argument on what seems a dubious study of their own, spending a morning rush-hour counting the number of riders going in and out of the Pearson station of the line, and counted just 14 on each train. Metrolinx offers up slightly better numbers and maintains that the new $27.50-a-ride train to the airport is a success. Yet, there is compelling reason to think about what the express might do for the morning commute — and that has to do with the morning commute itself. As it stands, the TTC is busting at the seams, and
city council, in its wisdom, has decided to prioritize costly transit improvements that won’t provide relief very soon and will likely become even more costly. The Scarborough subway extension that council approved will likely have to be realigned, to make way for Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack surface rail that follows at a point the precise same route as the subway. Putting commuters on trains on the Union Pearson line would immediately reduce the need, if there ever was one, for that western SmartTrack line. It is not as easy as that. The 15-minute service now available in each direction for SmartTrack would probably have to be increased. Politically, abandoning air travellers for transit users would involve a mea culpa for the Wynne government and Metrolinx that might be untenable.

Trustee’s campaign expenses reviewed David Smith, a Scarborough public school trustee removed from office and reinstated this year over his campaign expenses, is under official scrutiny for those expenses again. The City of Toronto’s Compliance Audit Committee this month decided to refer the Ward 19 trustee’s expenses to an auditor for a review and report. If that auditor finds evidence Smith overspent during the 2014 campaign,
he could lose his seat and wouldn’t be allowed to run in a byelection. The committee, which met at the Toronto District School Board’s Yonge Street headquarters on Thursday, July 9, took action on a complaint filed by Scott Harrison, the ward’s former trustee and its second-place finisher last year. Smith could not be immediately reached for comment. One reason Harrison setes out in the complaint alleg-

Smith was removed from office in April because he filed his 2014 campaign expenses late, but a Superior Court judge re-instated him in May.

OUT OF WORK? TOUGH LUCK. Hard times are about to get harder for Canada’s unemployed. Thanks to Harper’s Conservatives, thousands of Canadians who paid into Employment Insurance are being cut off from benefits, negatively impacting countless communities across Canada. This government is recklessly slashing essential public services, without regard for the rights and needs of all Canadians.

Briathwaite family proud of history in community ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
As one of the first black families in Scarborough, the Braithwaites faced both
the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. It was 1946 when Rella Braithwaite and her husband Bob, a Second World War veteran, bought a half an
acre property on Centennial Road. They were the first black family to settle in the southeast Scarborough neighbourhood and one of a handful in all of Scarborough
at the time. Rella, 92, said that “the early people had built three houses side by side” and that she and Bob bought one of them through the Veterans’ Land Act, which allowed exservicemen to purchase land with the help of a government loan. “The few people who were living here welcomed us, and we didn’t really have a problem with being the first blacks,” she said. But things changed in the 1960s when a subdivision of more than 300 homes was built down the road. “People were bringing biases with them,” said Diana Braithwaite, one of six children Rella and Bob raised. “You didn’t get invitations to certain things or you’d notice that people wouldn’t allow us to visit with certain people at their homes.” Some kids, Diana explained, didn’t want to touch her because “they were afraid maybe the colour was going to rub off.”

Diana Braithwaite, left, joins her mother Rella Braithwaite in presenting Centennial Road Public School students Pratik Bahl and Emily Norris with their 2015 Rella Braithwaite Creating Writing Awards, during a recent ceremony. The Braithwaite family moved onto Centennial Road in 1946, and was one of Scarborough’s first black families.
Diana said her dad also faced discrimination at his workplace, a local manufacturing business. “They weren’t advancing him,” said Diana, noting her dad “didn’t want to deal with that” so he started a scrap metal business.
Bob died in 2007; his business, though, continues, now being run by his sons. Seeing the need for her children to know their roots, Rella developed a career as a black historian, authoring >>>WRITING, page 17

Chariot Festival to take place at Kennedy Road temple Lord Ganesha, the Hindu remover of obstacles, will make another grand appearance beside Scarborough’s Kennedy Road this Saturday.
At the height of the annual Chariot Festival, the diety’s image is slowly paraded outside the Sri Varasiththi Vinaayagar temple on a huge, hand-carved wooden
platform pulled with heavy ropes. Prayers start at 7 a.m. inside the temple, which is just south of McNicoll Avenue, and the elephant-headed Ganesha
will be in the parking lot from 9 to 11 a.m. Thousands gather each year for the festival, and the temple says all people are welcome to witness it. Ganesha appears out-

In 1978 she worked at the education ministry on a black studies guide for students. “My mother told us about our history and our heritage so we were always proud of who we were,” said Diana, noting her mom “had us all wear African outfits” at community fun fairs. A writing award in Rella’s honour is presented each year to a graduating student or two at Centennial Road Junior Public School, located across from the home Rella has been
living in for nearly 70 years. Rella and Bob’s six children, including Diana, all attended the school. “The school was just going up when we came,” Rella said. This year, students Pratik Bahl and Emily Norr is received the Rella Braithwaite Creative Writing Award for 2015 during a graduation ceremony at the school. The award, started 11 years ago, is a way to encourage writing, something Rella enjoyed her whole life. “The kids seem to really be
so proud to receive it,” Diana said of the award, adding her family is equally proud to present it every year. For the most part, said D i a n a , g r ow i n g u p i n Scarborough was a positive experience. “We were welcomed by a lot of really nice families and wonderful people.” And she said the bigotry she sometimes faced “actually made me a stronger person.”

will personally receive the diety’s blessing. “When the king gets blessed, the whole country gets blessed,” Jaya Rajah, the temple manager, explained this week.

The Leslie Barns maintenance and storage facility for the TTC’s new streetcar fleet is delayed yet again. Leslie Street was supposed to have re-opened in July, delayed from June after a private contractor’s error required the concrete track bed from Commissioners Street to Queen Street to be torn up and rebuilt. The problem is now fixed but more time was needed for the project’s engineering contractor to review final designs for the work which TTC spokesperson Brad Ross termed as more complicated than usual because of technical requirements. Leslie Street is now slated to re-open next month, but the facility won’t open until late September – if there’s no further delay. TO in TRANSIT UP station at Toronto Pearson airport last Thursday to count the number of morning rushhour passengers using the four-stop premium transit line. They claim to have spotted just an average of 14 people using the service over a two-hour period, which works out to eight per cent of total capacity per train. Metrolinx reported recently ridership is at 3,250 passengers a day, in line with its first-year projections for UP which began running in early June. It’s projecting 2.5 million annual UP customers over the long-term, enough to recover day-to-day costs. NEW STREETCARS HIT TORONTO TRACKS wSEVEN
For the first time, seven new streetcars were in service as of last week, the TTC reported. Production issues with manufacturer Bombardier has meant a slow trickle of the sleek new rides, 204 of which are supposed to replace the existing fleet within five years. A revised production schedule by Bombardier promises
27 of the new vehicles will be in the TTC’s possession by the end of the year. There are currently two of the new streetcars running on the 509 Harbourfront route, three on 510 Spadina and another two on the 511 Bathurst service. EARLY SUNDAY SUBWAY CONSIDERED wBEING
This upcoming Sunday will be the last scheduled early opening for the subway as the Pan Am Games come to a close. For the past two Sundays, trains have started operating at 6 a.m., three hours earlier than usually scheduled to help transport Games spectators. While the TTC says it needs the three hours to get the trains ready for regular 9 a.m. service, it is looking into options for speeding up that needed work to allow for consistent early openings. Nothing’s confirmed at the moment, but it’s looking as if earlier openings will become the norm in the future. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears on Thursday. Why choose a realtor? A realtor has the experience and knowledge to help you find the home of your dreams Entering the real estate market is both a daunting and exciting experience. You spend your time envisioning the perfect first home, the dream kitchen, or the ideal neighbourhood you’d like to settle down in. But a home is also the most expensive purchase you can make, and finding the right home to meet your needs should be left in the hands of a professional. A realtor has the education, experience and inside knowledge to make home buying easy. Like any professional in their field, a real estate agent needs to go to school and complete courses before they can secure their real estate license. You trust your hairdresser to help with your hair, and turn to a doctor with a medical issue; it only makes sense to turn to a professional when making a home investment. Real estate agents spend years learning from professionals about the importance of economics, demographics and geography on real estate values, how land and property is registered, municipal planning and land use regulations, the construction of homes and buildings, determining the value of a property, current trends and issues that impact residential and commercial real estate and many other necessary skills to help their clients buy and sell their homes faster, that you likely don’t know if you aren’t an expert yourself. Even after they’ve obtained their real estate license, many realtors continue to update
their skills to be on top of an ever-changing real estate market. It’s not all about statistics and school courses. Real estate agents bring years of experience to the table that helps guide new clients when looking for a new home. They know the ins and outs of the neighbourhood you’re looking to move into, from the demographics of the area to the closest school, or know where to find the industry buzz about it. This kind of knowledge only comes with being tapped into the real estate industry. Once they’ve helped you find a home that meets all of your wants and needs, realtors use their knowledge of the neighbourhood to help get you the best deal. You may know that a comparable home in the neighbourhood was on the market for $600,000, but a realtor would know how long it was on the market, any upgrades the owners made and the actual selling price, which can help you when making an offer. Whether you are putting your home up for sale, or looking to purchase, a realtor has a network of professionals to help you meet your goals. Over time realtors develop a roster of contractors, decorators, plumbers and electricians they’ve worked with, and can attest to the quality of work. You don’t need to know everything about buying, selling and even renovating when you enter the real estate market, as long as you hire a professional who does.

How to maximize natural light in your home (NC) Adding daylight to your living space is one of the best things you can do to improve your home. There aren’t many other home adjustments that have the power to change your mood, your health, the style, comfort and design of your home than something as simple as natural light. Here are some smart ways to enhance the natural light that enters your home. Capitalize on windows Go with light and airy blinds or curtains, instead of dark and heavy textures. Translucent shades provide privacy while still allowing the sun’s natural brightness to shine through. Even something as simple as pulling back curtains during the day and giving your windows a thorough cleaning can
make a big impact on the natural brightness of your home. Fresh paint colour Choose a soft, bright colour for your walls to help reflect the natural light that comes in. While dark colours tend to consume the brightness of a room and give off a feeling of dullness and lifelessness, light coloured paint can actually radiate natural light that comes through. A tip to maximize the effectiveness of light paint is to add white paint trim around your windows and an accent wall for a pop of colour. Put in a sun tunnel While skylights may not work for the roof details or floor plans of every home, Sun Tunnels are easy to install and extremely effective for bringing light in.
They work by capturing light on the roof and directing it downwards into a highly reflective aluminum tube – the light ends up coming through the ceiling of the home distributing light evenly throughout the space. Look for sun tunnels that are designed for reliability and performance like ones from Velux, which have an integrated pan and dome assembly to prevent leaks and allow for condensation drainage. The more daylight you can invite indoors the better you’ll feel. Daylight is free, and it’s the ultimate green energy source. These natural light solutions are simple, clean and elegant home improvements that boost the beauty and brightness of your home without raising your bills.

Bantam Stars lacrosse team tops at Nepean tourney The Scarborough-based Toronto Stars bantam lacrosse team earned the gold medal at the Nepean Knights tournament last weekend. The Stars road to the gold medal went largely through cross city rivals Toronto Beaches, hooking up for the tournament’s last two games, including the gold medal game won by the Stars 4-2. It was the prototypical
Stars/Beaches game: low scoring with chances and great goaltending at both ends. The two teams also happened to play the final game of the round robin, squaring off to a 1-1 tie. The Stars, who needed either a tie or a win to advance to the gold medal game, finished the preliminary round with two wins
(5-3 over Northumberland Nemesis and 9-2 over the Nepean Knights) and two ties (3-3 with Gloucester Griffins in addition to the 1-1 tie with Beaches) while Beaches advanced with a round robin record of three wins to go with the tie.

Ford Fest: Rob ‘itching’ to host event in North York says Doug Ford

SALE JULY 23-26
It’s been nearly a year since the last Ford Fest in Thomson Memorial Park, and Ford Nation’s been silent on when the party might return to Scarborough. Former mayoral candidate Doug Ford, however, says Ford Fest isn’t dead and it may soon transplant itself to a new territory, North York. On Tuesday, he said the family were checking possible dates and locations and would make an announcement “probably in the next week.” Ford added he’s talked with younger brother Rob, former Toronto mayor and current North Etobicoke councillor, about hosting Ford Fest in a new location. “Rob’s really itching to do it in North York.” Ford supporters were never shy before about promoting these annual parties for the public, which started, by their recollection, in Etobicoke back yard of the Ford family home in 1995. After Rob Ford became mayor, the Fords kept up the tradition until
2013, when, in an apparent nod to Ford’s strong Scarborough base, they first staged a Ford Fest at Thomson Park on Brimley Road. That event, offering free hamburgers, beer and T-shirts, drew thousands. The family’s decision to stage another last July 25, as Rob Ford was campaigning for re-election, drew complaints from many, but the Fords, insisting it was a family celebration and not a campaign event, got their city permit. parties They have also said the parties aren’t welcome any longer at the home of their mother, Diane Ford. The last Ford Fest so far was held in an Islington Avenue parking lot late last September, after Rob Ford had started cancer treatment and Doug Ford had taken his place as candidate for mayor. This week, Doug Ford said the family knows a lot of its support comes from Scarborough and Etobicoke, where the parties are appreciated. But the family has supporters in North York, too, he added.
Meeting slated for the SPOT There will be a public meeting on Wednesday, July 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. on how the city will keep The SPOT open. Five years in the making and “youth-governed,” The SPOT (Success Power Opportunity Teamwork) opened in 2013 as an addi-

Pole vaulter Barber wins Pan Am Games gold medal Shawn Barber vaulted his way to gold Tuesday. The 21-year-old, who has ties to Scarborough, placed first in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ men’s pole vault final at York University. He equalled a Pan Am record with a jump of 5.80 metres, beating out German
Chiaraviglio from Argentina, who placed second with a jump of 5.75 metres, and bronze medallist Mark Hollis from the United States with a jump of 5.40 metres. Barber’s father, George, who competed in pole vault at the 1983 World Championships and is his
son’s primary coach, said the goal for the day was to “play, have fun, and win.” Cheering section “(Barber) has been pole vaulting since he was four or five years old,” George said, adding some 30 relatives
came out to cheer the gold medallist on. Barber, who joked he made sure to apply sunscreen to his fair skin while under the hot sun, said he did his best to keep the mood light and friendly amongst competitors, adding he has a few more meets lined up this year and is
setting his sights on the 2016 Rio Olympics. A two-time Canadian champion, Barber had his international breakthrough at the 2012 World Junior Championships where he won bronze, and went on to win bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow, Scotland as a senior. While competing for Akron University, Barber won backto-back NCAA indoor pole vault titles in 2014 and 2015. Barber had a stand-out year in 2015, clearing 5.88 metres indoors in February, breaking a 16 year NCAA record as well as the Canadian record.
