Plans to change services at hospital sites formally dropped The Scarborough Hospital has formally dropped its attempt to divide surgical services between its General and Birchmount campuses and to merge its two birthing centres. Both of these major changes, which the TSH board of directors voted Monday to “no longer pursue,” had already been overtaken by the study of a possible
merger with Rouge Valley Health System, Scarborough’s other hospital. An expert panel, appointed by Central East Local Health Integration Network after opposition to the proposals from physicians and residents, issued a report last month ruling they were too risky for patients and appeared to be “a quick fix for

Members passed a motion Monday stating the hospital is committed to “ensuring the emergency departments at both hospital campuses (Birchmount and General) remain open 24/7 as part of the facilitated integration with Rouge Valley Health System.” CEOs of both hospitals had

A joint integration committee of the LHIN and hospitals, meanwhile, has said it will start “stakeholder engagement” on a merger next month.

Byelection candidates square off at debate
SIU clears police in shooting of man
Physiotherapy changes, subways discussed at Scarborough-Guildwood event Scarborough-Guildwood candidates didn’t show much trust for each other as they clashed over physiotherapy, workers’ safety and, not surprisingly, subways at the riding’s only formal provincial byelection debate Tuesday. Eight of the 10 candidates running to replace MPP Margarett Best on Aug. 1 crowded a table at the Qssis Banquet Halls to share their views over breakfast. Progressive Conservative Ken Kirupa repeated twin claims his is the only party that will bring subways to Scarborough – without raising taxes – while the Liberals, by promising a subway, “are trying to buy your votes.” Before the byelection was called, Liberals “ignored your calls for subways,” said Kirupa, a realtor. “What will they do tomorrow?” But Mitzie Hunter, the riding’s Liberal contender, hit back. Declaring again her support for replacing a planned light-rail line along the current Scarborough RT route with a Bloor-Danforth subway extension, Hunter said the Liberals are building the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown line, which she called the city’s first major transit project in a generation. “When the PCs were in power, they not only cancelled a subway (on Eglinton Avenue West), they buried it,” added Hunter, on leave as CEO of Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance. “As for the NDP, there’s no plan and no commitment to either choice” of rapid transit for Scarborough, she said. Adam Giambrone, a former city councillor running for the New Democrats, said the riding’s voters are “tired of

cynical Liberal promises.” The proposed subway extension north to Sheppard Avenue comes with “no firm commitments” and will mean little to people in Scarborough-Guildwood, who would have to wait for it at least a decade, he said. Meanwhile, the Liberals have cut $4 billion from transit line projects and an operating subsidy to the TTC, even as it gained more riders, said Giambrone. “People in Scarborough-Guildwood know that because they’re stuck on the buses - if they can get on.” Green candidate Nick Leeson called the Liberal choice of a subway over a light-rail plan already in place “bad policy” and an example of putting power over principle. The lightrail line has more stops and would revitalize communities it runs through, said Leeson, a lawyer. “We need action now to get cars off the road,” he added. “They’re trying to sell you a faulty bill of goods.” There were more differences of opinion over the government’s plan to change how it provides physiotherapy services after Aug. 1. Hunter said she doesn’t want seniors to worr y.
Budgeted spending on physiotherapy is increasing, and people will be able to get the services “right in the facilities that they do today.” An association of designated physiotherapy clinics in the province argue seniors should worry, since the government will spread the services out and spend less on physiotherapy. Giambrone said the net result “is seniors will get less access to the care that they need,” and added no matter how the Liberals try to shift numbers, “seniors already know” their services are being cut. Kirupa also accused the Liberals of “trying to cut care for seniors” after having wasted billions on other things. Leeson used a personal example to show the Liberal strategy was wrong: his grandmother, who has had physiotherapy in her retirement home twice a week, was told she can get it six times a year starting next month, he said. “This is failed management again.” Hunter responded that under the new system Leeson’s grandmother will be able to receive service in the home. “That is not chang-

ing.” Candidates were called on by the Scarborough chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario, the debate organizers, to support repeal of a section of the Professional Engineers Act, called the industrial exemption, that allows businesses to work on production machinery without the services of an engineer. The PEO contends the repeal was planned in legislation but halted at the request of businesses. Giambrone and Leeson supported repeal. Hunter, though pledging workers’ safety is “our government’s number one priority,” said Ontario’s labour ministry has found no evidence repealing the industrial exemption will reduce accidents. Kirupa said the PC party would do a full review of all government regulations but added the province needs to balance rules on safety with economic development and jobs. Giambrone said the former Guild Inn in the riding has been left to deteriorate, and should get provincial support. Also running in Scarborough-Guildwood is Danish Ahmed, who leads $

the Party for People with Special Needs. A PakistaniCanadian, he is an albino and legally blind, but said many Ontarians have disabilities that are not as visible. “People with disabilities are not going away, and that’s a good thing,” said Ahmed, an author and motivational speaker. “When we help people with disabilities we’re actually helping everybody.” Heath Thomas, a Libertarian, said “government gangsters” are offering residents a subway, “whether you want it or not,” with money “they took from you by theft.” When Leeson criticized Hunter for rejecting a merger of the province’s Catholic and public school boards a move he said would save $1.5 billion - Thomas, a small businessman, called the idea of having one school system “abominable.” Jim Hamilton, an independent candidate and investor, said it’s time to reform Ontario’s unfair tax structure, moving the education component of property tax to income tax, and eliminating the multi-residential class of property tax, which he said is unfair to people in older rental apartment buildings. Raphael Rosch, said he’s running for the Family Coalition Party because it matched his values, including the right to life and freedom to own property. He urged riding residents to “vote blank at least” if no candidate appealed to them, because, he said, declining the ballot shows politicians you would vote for them if they represented your views.
The Special Investigations Unit has concluded that a Toronto police officer was justified in using lethal force on a knife-wielding man in Scarborough last month. Malcolm Jackman, 39, was fatally shot by police after holding a knife to the throat of a hostage outside an apartment building at 140 Adanac Dr. on the evening of June 8. The SIU interviewed the subject officer, five witness officers and 10 civilian witnesses as part of the investigation. The investigation revealed that two officers were dispatched to an apartment at 140 Adanac to assist paramedics with an emotionally disturbed person. According to the SIU, a man told one of the officers that Jackman attacked him with a knife. Though this wasn’t why police were called to the building, they investigated and found Jackman in a stairwell. Armed with a knife, Jackman asked the officers to shoot him. One officer discharged pepper spray but that had no effect, the SIU said. Jackman then left the building and took a hostage. “Both officers commanded Mr. Jackman to drop the knife multiple times while pointing their firearms at him,” the SIU said. “The subject officer observed Mr. Jackman moving the knife closer to his hostage’s neck and discharged her firearm four times in his direction.”
The East Scarborough Storefront holds a candidate meet-and-greet July 30 at Progress Church, 4242 Kingston Rd., at 6 p.m.

ur city is a bustling place where the day-to-day grind can take a toll. For those looking for a little back-to-nature respite, we’ve got the perfect adventure waiting for you, just steps away from your front door.
In this edition’s special feature on pages 22 and 23, we highlight local hiking trails and others across the city where people can go to spot wildlife, keep active, socialize and re-energize. Other stories we’ve collected online will take you butterfly watching along the Leslie Street Spit, jogging through the ravines of the Don River and exploring the ecosystems of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum in north Etobicoke. There’s a surprising number of hiking and walking trails in our view our city. There are so many, we list them all within our The outdoors couldn’t feature. When you walk some of them right in our it’s easy to forget you’re in the own backyard middle of a bustling urban centre - like when you’re following the winding trails through the tall, dense forests of High Park. Others have landmark reminders, like the condo tower that looms over the meadowland of the Humber Arboretum. But all, some would suggest, have the power to refresh the spirit. The federal non-profit group Turtlefeather True Nature uses outings along these trails to help women who have experienced abuse gain confidence and reduce stress. It’s also a welcome outlet for groups like the Metro Toronto Fitness Club, who has been taking to the trails for years (nearly 50 in this case), seeking not only outdoor activity but new friendships. The group meets weekly for social walks and organizes social activities on a regular basis. Though one wouldn’t normally associate hiking and city life, these protected green spaces prove the two can compliment one another and we hope our feature will prove to our readers that hiking is accessible here in our communities. So pack a lunch, grab the sunscreen (and bug spray) and head out on your own trail adventure. These green spaces provide a natural oasis that can’t be fully appreciated until you’re there. Take time for yourself, or bring the whole family and discover the great outdoors right in your backyard.

How not to plan and build transit It looks like we’re planning and financing the Scarborough subway extension the same way we did for the Spadina subway extension. Toronto’s procedure isn’t found in textbooks. Maybe it ought to be, under a section on how not to plan and build transit. Neither subway extension started with professional justification. For the Spadina subway extension, once it passes York University, there is sparse population, little development and the route is well served by highways. Over in Scarborough, professionals have been consistent in advising that light rapid transit will serve more people less expensively. In both cases, staff pointed to higher priorities, some of which have been needed for decades. Never mind. Both subway extensions sprang from the same justification: a basic need to get re-elected. In the case of Spadina, the provincial Liberals were down
david soknacki beyond the headlines in the polls, and would soon be facing the electorate. With the Scarborough extension, they wish to assure the election of their candidate in a byelection. Provincial financing strategy is basically the same. Subways will be provided if the provincial government wins. When the Spadina subway extension was under consideration, the federal Conservatives governed a minority parliament. Although their principles and the constitution advised them not to meddle in provincial matters, the Conservatives found the prospect of suburban seats tempting. Practical considerations won, the subway was funded, and Conservatives gained 16 seats. There are similarities this time. Prior to calling a Scarborough byelection, the provincial Liberals were adamant that council had priori-
tized a non-subway project. In any case, they said there was no more funding. After the writ dropped, money was found, as was flexibility. If polls said electors wanted a subway, the province would not object. Ministers now joined local MPPs in demanding a subway. Once again the province told the public the project required a substantial contribution from the federal government. But the situation in Ottawa is different this time. The Conservatives hold a majority government. Although the mayor seems to be on the best personal terms with the prime minister and finance minister, federal electoral considerations take precedence. For Ottawa, it is a question of what their investment of about $400 millions buys. Indecision or deliberate delay has its own impacts. If the federal government does not finance the Scarborough subway extension, the provin-
cial Liberals cannot use the announcement in the general provincial election expected within a year. On the other hand, a lack of federal funding will frustrate the mayor. Taxpayers and residents alike will find delaying building transit costly. Already tens of millions have been invested, or perhaps now wasted, in the light rapid transit option. Should the project become a subway extension there will be the need for new studies and re-approvals. A project that has been on the books for years, and which commuters desperately need, has been deferred again. Even beyond the selfcentred politics, and wasted dollars, two similar examples show how subway projects are prioritized and funded in Toronto. These cases are starting to look like textbook examples of how not to build transit.

The Misanthrope provides great summer outdoor experience MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com
T
he world can be a difficult place to navigate with so many different personalities we’re expected to get along whether for work or play. In the Guild Festival Theatre’s current show, Moliere’s The Misanthrope, dubbed “the comedy of manners,” one man throws tact out the window to live his life in a brutally honest way, expressing exactly what he thinks regardless of who may be offended. The show venue is the beautiful and historic Guild Inn, staged on the Greek theatre nestled amongst the stunning gardens. It’s the ideal setting for this comedy that highlights how people “play the social game” versus one man, Alceste (Bruce Beaton), who refuses to do so. And herein lies the comedy of this show that begins with a great scene between Alceste and Philinte (Rick Persich), having a frank discussion about how he disagrees with Alceste’s outright declarations of people’s flaws, while Alceste thinks Philinte’s false flattery of people in the name of proper social etiquette
is equally unacceptable. Add to the mix that Alceste is hopelessly in love with Celimene (Sochi Fried), but hates that she enjoys gossiping with anyone who will listen, is a giant flirt and is the most sought after lady in the palace. moral Among Celimene’s admirers are Oronte (Ryan Egan) and Citandre and Acaste (Andrew Pimento, John Chou), who love to participate in the gossip with her. Then there’s Arsinoe (Tina Sterling), a highly moral lady who is jealous of Celimene and her cousin Eliante (Leslie DosRemedios), who disagrees with Celimene’s immoral ways. This show is less about a linear story than it shines a spotlight on how people behave. Some are more authentic than others, some wear certain masks depending on who they’re with and some, like Alceste, practice blunt honesty, despite it being highly offensive in a world where appearances are everything. While this show debuted in 1666, the characters are relatable, whether

you know people like this or see yourself in them. In today’s world, people want to make an impression, whether it’s to get ahead or to be perceived in a certain way. And these characters are no different, which lends to several funny scenes full of witty repartee, outrageous revelations played out
by a colourful and talented cast of characters that are enjoyable to watch. Beaton is thoroughly entertaining as the “tell it like is” Alceste and his reactions and inability to bite his tongue is funny every time. Persich is also great in his role, displaying a much needed softer
side as Alceste’s friend and voice of reason. Busy-bodies and charming, Pimento and Chou are the amazing comic duo of this show and Egan’s portrayal of the overly dramatic and flamboyant Oronte, was an audience favourite. The women of this show are equally impressive, Fried as Celimene is sweet and strong and embodies her role well, and her icy rival, Arsinoe, is fantastically played by Sterling. Beautiful lighting, both created and natural with the setting sun, and period costumes, along with the outdoor setting makes this theatre production a unique evening out. Just make sure you bring your bug spray and expect the unexpected when dealing with the elements. The Misanthrope runs Wednesdays to Sundays, 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees each Sunday (except July 28), at the Greek theatre at the Guild Inn Gardens. Tickets are $25. Local Tamils mark Black July anniversary Scarborough’s Tamil community this week is remembering the Black July riots, a week of anti-Tamil violence 30 years ago blamed for three decades of civil war in Sri Lanka. Black July is “the main reason you will see hund re d s o f t h o u s a n d s o f Tamils in Canada now,” David Poopalapillai, national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress said Tuesday, July 23. In a statement, the Scarborough-based Congress added every Tamil family living in Canada has been affected by the pogrom, which lasted from July 24 to 29, 1983, and its aftermath. A million Tamils have left Sri Lanka since, and a million more were internally displaced. The civil war, in which tens of thousands of Tamils and the island’s majority Sinhalese died, finally ended in 2009
as the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was crushed by the government. The Congress invited the public to an exhibit at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda. The exhibit includes the testimony of Black July survivors, and encouraged TamilCanadians to share stories and feelings about the riots at www.blackjuly83.com/ SubmitStory.htm and on social media. Politicians of Canada’s three major federal parties expressed sympathy on the anniversary and support for the Tamil community’s continuing concern for the rights of people in their homeland. Rathika Sitsabaiesan, the first Tamil-Canadian MP, said the repercussions of Black July can still be felt. The Opposition New
Democrats urge the Canadian government to boycott the Co m m o n we a l t h He a d s of Government Meeting scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka this November, said Sitsabaiesan, who represents Scarborough-Rouge River for the NDP. “Canada must take a principled stance regarding the Sri Lankan government’s continued human rights abuses and refusal to conduct an independent investigation of war crimes allegations,” she added. J a s o n K e n n e y, t h e Conservative government’s employment and social development minister, said he stood with Tamil Canadians “in commemorating the senseless destruction and tragic loss of life during Black July.”

Regular garbage collection back after special flood pick ups Regular garbage, recycling, green bin and yard waste resumed Tuesday of this week after the city announced it has now finished its special garbage collection following the intense rain storm on July 8. Crews collected about 4,100 tonnes of flood-damaged materials across Toronto, the city said in a statement. As of July 23, residents
should follow their normal garbage collection schedule and standard disposal rules, the statement said. For example, if you have more garbage than will fit in your bin, you can leave extra bags with a city-issued tag beside the bin. Tags can be purchased in packages of five for $15.50 at Canadian Tire stores. You can put out bulky or
oversized items such as furniture beside your garbage bin on your regular garbage days. No tags are required. The city collects these items in a separate truck for reuse, recycling or dismantling to keep them out of garbage dumps. Carpeting should be tied into rolls no longer than 1.2 metres (four feet) and weighing no more than 20
kilograms (44 pounds). Electronic waste Electronic waste can be put out for pick up on your regular garbage days. Place them half a metre (about two feet) away from your garbage bin. The city does not collect hazardous waste such as paint cans and fluorescent lighting
tubes and bulbs. Instead, take them to a drop-off depot or a local community environment day or call 311 to arrange for a “toxic taxi” for free pick up.
disposal company. Check Waste Wizard, the online search tool at http:// app.toronto.ca/wes/winfo/ search.do, or call 311 if you are unsure of how to properly dispose of waste materials, the city said.
Construction material Construction material such as drywall and wood should be taken to a drop-off site or picked up by a private

Popularity of electric vehicles concerns Toronto Hydro RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is resulting in more strain on Toronto’s overworked power grid, says a Toronto Hydro spokesperson. While fewer than 100 vehicles were in operation in Ontario as little as three years ago, the number has ballooned to 1,450 as EVs are proving ever more attractive to consumers due to cheap energy costs – $2,000 less per year than gas powered cars, according to fuel efficiency estimates – and the availability of provincial rebates. However, according to Tom Odell, the popularity is coming at an increased load to existing power utilities due to the exorbitant amount of power EVs can take up for charging. “EV usage represents three to five times more than the power requirement of the average house,” said Odell, Toronto Hydro’s Capital
Projects manager, last week. “It’s like throwing the energy usage of three households onto a neighbourhood utility.” EV day Odell was at the recent EV Day showcase at Yonge-Dundas Square where members of the public could check out and even test-drive various EV models from manufacturers such as Chevrolet, Nissan and Tesla Motors out of California, which is the world’s first car company devoted only to the manufacturing of EVs. According to sales figures, Tesla’s Model S sedan is the second-highestselling EV in Canada, second to the Chevy Volt. Michelle Lee-Gracey from Ford said the Focus model on display at Yonge-Dundas Square was one of five EVs manufactured by the car giant and can travel around 120 kilometres on a single charge, with a top speed of around 135 kilometres.
As car manufacturers continue to improve battery strength, EV owners lose their “range anxiety” and are confident to travel greater distances. Odell said Toronto Hydro’s challenge was to determine how increased usage will impact the grid. “Charge control is a very important issue for us,” he said. “We have to make prudent infrastructure choices to accommodate electric vehicles.” A Toronto Hydro pilot program monitoring of electric vehicle usage shows a “significant cluster” in Etobicoke and Bloor West as well as North York. While the results of the pilot are limited to those electric car owners who volunteer to share their usage with Toronto Hydro, Odell said the information gleaned from the study shows energy usage spikes in the nighttime hours when home vehicle charging is strongest. “People are charging for a long period of time when they get at home

at 6 p.m. right until two or three in the morning,” he said. “We’re seeing more strain on local distribution transformers and that’s when we see the EV usage landing.” Plug’ n Drive president Cara Clairman said EVs should be considered an attractive purchase because they are far less harmful to the environment than traditional automobiles. “You can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90 per cent,” said Clairman whose group educates about the environmental and cost benefits of EV use. Clairman said a central objective of her group was to increase the number of public power charging stations available in the city, which currently stands at less than 10 according to the City of Toronto website, although stations are available at some car dealerships.

WHERE DO YOU enjoy the outdoors in the city? Email us a paragrah about it, explaining why: scm@insidetoronto.com
Hiking the Highland Creek Watershed Winding through parks in south Scarborough, watershed is urbanized north of Hwy. 401 MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
O
n sweltering days like Scarborough had last week, the Highland Creek Watershed needs every tree it can get. Fast and prone to erosion in storms, the creek has the most developed watershed in Greater Toronto, its upper reaches north of Hwy. 401 basically all in pipes and concrete channels. Only six per cent of it is covered by anything that can be called a forest, but in a heat wave, Morningside Park, the watershed’s largest green expanse, feels like a blessing. From the park, where the East and West Highland creeks
meet, a determined hiker can walk a trail southwest under Lawrence Avenue to as far south as Kingston Road. The paved pathway also winds under Morningside Avenue and through the University of Toronto Scarborough, turning southeast through Colonel Danforth Park and under Lawrence Avenue to the Highland’s mouth at Lake Ontario. Last Wednesday evening, as Andrea Cake and Greg Johnston led about 20 people down a steep path from Lawrence for a “tree tour” of the park – past an old sign still warning “skiing, tobogganing and sleigh riding are hazardous and prohibited” – the air
At 417 acres, Morningside Park is the largest natural park fully within the City of Toronto’s borders. seemed to cool immediately. Brian MacFarlane, the park’s volunteer historian and a member of the Highland Creek Green Team paused by a small clearing where a dance hall and recreation centre once stood. It was torn down about 20 years ago, he said. “It was a beautiful old hall; it was all stained pine.” At 417 acres, Morningside is the largest natural park fully
in Toronto, said MacFarlane, who is starting a group called Friends of Morningside Park to work on improvements, including better access to the area. Cake, field operations supervisor for the non-profit group LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), started pointing out notable trees, starting with a Canada hemlock - “the underbark is actually purple” - and cedars, with bark that is almost smooth and looks lined. She stops by a white pine, once considered by the British a perfect tree to make masts for their giant warships. “It’s definitely over 100,” Cake said. From a low bridge after
about a kilometre, different species of willow could be seen, all prime spots for insects, and resilient. “It’s almost impossible to kill a willow,” Cake declared. Earlier, MacFarlane pronounced another spot on the creek - where trash strewn high on the banks testified to how high the water rises after a heavy rain - “the absolute best spot to see the salmon in the fall” during another guided walk Sept. 29. Not all of the huge fish die getting through the park, but older ones become food for foxes, coyotes and other animals, MacFarlane said. If you come down “first thing,” as he does, you might >>>LOTS, page 25

Lots of wildlife to be seen >>>from page 24 see a beaver in the creek, or coyotes scurrying across the path, or the deer. “You have to explore this park a lot more,” MacFarlane said. “You’ll see a lot of neat things.” There are threats to this urban oasis. Invasive plants such as dog strangling vine, garlic mustard and japanese knotweed - with green bamboo-like stalks - are everywhere, said Johnston, Highland Watershed assistant for the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. “You could spend a lifetime trying to get rid of it all.” Cake shows the hikers a patch of the vine - “It can climb up trees. It can destroy anything in its path,” she warned - with another invasive plant spreading over it, common buckthorn. Grown as a hedge, buckthorn is bright orange under
the bark, its wood exceptionally hard, said Cake, who used to work at removing it. “It can be a tree if it wants.” Probably the watershed’s greatest enemy now, though, is the emerald ash borer, a tiny beetle that can fly a kilometre on the wind and kill any ash. Beside an ash, infested and marked with red paint as one to be cut down, Cake said the city will plant a tree in residents’ front yards for free, while LEAF will plant one in a back yard for $150-200. Green Team members have a neighbourhood canvas planned July 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to battle the bug’s effects, at Charles Gordon Senior Public School on Marcos Boulevard. Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in Toronto LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com
For the first time this year, mosquitoes in Toronto have tested positive for West Nile virus, the public health department announced yesterday. The department will not say where the mosquitoes were found, arguing all residents across Toronto should take steps to ensure they do not get infected, healthy environments manager Elaine Pacheco told The Scarborough Mirror. “It doesn’t really matter where in the city it was found. The public is reminded to take precautions,” she said, adding public health monitors 43 mosquito traps across Toronto on a weekly basis. There have been no reported human cases of the virus in Toronto this year, Pacheco said. In 2012, there were 100 positive mosquito pools and 94 human cases.

This scooter, used to deliver insecticides to mosquito breeding grounds, helped the City of Toronto control West Nile virus last summer.
The public’s risk of infection is low, with less than one per cent of people who are infected becoming sick enough to need hospitalization, according to public health’s website. “The majority of people infected with (the virus) show no symptoms. About one in five people infected with (the virus) have symptoms, which
may include fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting and body aches. These can be accompanied by a skin rash and swollen glands. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to weeks,” it said.

Basketball tourney remembers Danzing shooting victim Yasay A York University basketball tournament held in honour of alumnus Joshua Yasay, an innocent victim killed last summer during a shoot out on Danzig Street, raised $4,000. Funds raised at the first annual tournament are being donated to the Joshua Yasay Award for Excellence in Criminology and Community Service. The July 1 tournament was held a couple of weeks before the first anniversary of Yasay’s death on July 16, 2012. Seven teams competed in the tournament, which saw Yasay’s family, friends and fellow students play in a double elimination competition before taking on the Toronto Police Services’ recreational team in the final round. The finals matched up players from the Goodfellas Barbershop, which Yasay

Investigation into dog on apartment balcony continues The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating an incident involving a dog left on a Scarborough apartment building balcony.
OSPCA spokesperson Alison Cross said the agency received the first call on the situation at 4:20 p.m. Monday and informed the caller that the next available officer
would respond. “At the time, all of our officers were on the road responding to other calls,” she said Tuesday afternoon.

“Later that night, an officer was assigned to the case, and the investigation is currently ongoing.” When asked what happened with the dog, Cross said “the investigation is currently ongoing so when we have more information to share we will share it.” When asked if the dog is in OSPCA’s custody, Cross said “again, this is an ongoing investigation, so I’m not going to reveal any information at this point in time about the investigation.” Seventh-floor balcony

Police said the incident happened on a seventh-floor balcony at 410 McCowan Rd. “The complainant advised the dog is outside barking,” said Const. Tony Vella, adding the animal was later rescued. Toronto animal services also received a complaint. “When our agent got there, the dog was no longer on the balcony,” a city spokesperson said. “The complaint was that the dog was on the balcony. It was moaning, barking and scratching at the door.” – Andrew Palamarchuk

It’s time to ride the waves and feel the wind in your hair as Surf Ontario hosts its fourth annual SUP4MS, this Sunday. Hosted by Mike Sandusky and Grant Kennedy, owners of Surf Ontario surf shop, the fundraiser involves Stand Up Paddling (SUP) on Lake Ontario and raises money for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada. Stand-up paddling sees participants standing on a board, much like a surf board, and paddling across water. It’s a newer sport that has been gaining popularity over the past seven years. The pair, who picked up the sport five years ago, created the fundraiser in 2009 with a 65-kilometre paddle across Lake Ontario to raise money for MS. “My sister has MS,” said Sandusky, who is from Scarborough. “I was thinking about something that we could do to help raise money to support her and other people with MS,” Their first trek – from Hamilton to Toronto – lasted 14 hours and raised more than $6,000. “That was sort of the experiment to see if we could do it the first year,” Sandusky said. “We sort of opened it up after that for other people to join.” The fundraiser has been gaining momentum over the past three years, with some participating in the 65-kilometre trip and others opting to take shorter routes. So far, SUP4MS has raised around $30,000. The 25-kilometre route leaves from Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering at 8 a.m. Sunday. There is also a shorter, 10-kilometre route that leaves Scarborough Bluff’s Beach at 11 a.m. The day finishes at Balmy Beach in Toronto. The pair are hoping the fundraiser will continue gaining participants each year and continue to raise money for people like Sandusky’s sister.
