My dad was a king of Carnival in Trinidad,” said Eustace. Like a child waiting for Christmas to arrive each year, Eustace would wait patiently for Carnival. “It would always take so long to come every year and
now Carnival for me, is every month,” Eustace said. Flash forward 30 years and Eustace is leader of the Mas Band Carnival Nationz, a formidable participant in the competition. Eustace admitted his biggest competition is Louis Saldenah’s Mas Band, Mas K. “It’s a friendly rivalry,” he said. Carnival Nationz has won the last four years in a row, an unprecedented record. Eustace
also competes in Trinidad. Carnival Nationz is comprised of 2,000 members and is made possible with the efforts of more than100 volunteers. This year, Carnival Nationz will be showcasing its On Broadway theme. “I’ve been participating in Caribbean Carnival since I was two and I’ve been making masks since I was about 10,” said volunteer Tisann McSween. >>>CARNIVAL’S, page 16

Provincial green light for McNicoll Bus Garage MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray has approved the McNicoll Bus Garage in Agincourt, dashing hopes of a local coalition which fought to stop it. The TTC has for years planned to build a facility, north of McNicoll Avenue and east of Kennedy Road, which can service or store 250 buses at a time. The TTC and its largest group of employees, Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 113, say the garage is necessary because the transit authority is critically short of bus storage space in the city’s east end.
maintaining equipment to prevent unnecessary noise” and “restricting equipment idling to the minimum necessary.” The TTC has proposed beginning construction next year and opening in 2019.

the coalition – still hoping to see it moved somewhere else – urged residents to write Murray and request a full
environmental assessment of the project. On Monday, however, a spokesperson said Murray,
Near the future McNicoll Bus Garage in Agincourt are trees born from the dirt and ashes of Vimy Ridge. Leslie Miller, a Canadian soldier who survived that terrible First World War battle and others, mailed home acorns from a half-buried European oak he found at Vimy. Miller later planted them on land that now belongs to the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church. The local struggle over the garage - a project the province now says is clear to proceed - comes as volunteers work to bring the “Vimy Oaks” back to the battleground for the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge in April, 2017. From cuttings taken from the oaks earlier this year, saplings are growing at a nursery in Flamborough. They are very healthy, said Patricia Sinclair, an Agincourt resident and part of a Vimy Oak team working with the Vimy Foundation. “We aim to have them shipped in the fall (of) 2016 via military flight. The team is working on obtaining the necessary health certificates,” Sinclair said this week. “Things in France are going well. We hope to have our landscape architect over later this year for a site visit.” The 100 oak saplings, each to bear the name
of a donor with a relative who fought in the war, will form Centennial Park and help pay for a new Vimy Visitors Education Centre beside Canada’s most famous overseas monument, the Vimy Memorial. Knowing the European oaks planted on the adjacent church property “have a unique cultural value,” a consultant doing a tree survey of the garage property paid special attention. Among trees which would have to be removed or harmed to build the garage, the company found, is a Vimy Oak standing near Kennedy Road. With a 29-centimetre diameter at breast height, it was just under the trunk thickness required for protection under the City of Toronto’s tree bylaw. The TTC has promised to study whether the tree has cultural significance and, if it does, how best to protect it from harm. Sinclair said the volunteer team is satisfied it is not one of the oaks Miller planted after the war: “The tree mentioned is, we believe, a grandfathered tree.” The land containing the Vimy Oaks would make an ideal Vimy Education Centre here in Canada, provided it was separated from the church property, she suggested.
Top scholar honour for Scarborough high school student The Toronto Catholic District School Board is the latest in an impressive list to honour a local teenager. The board named seventeen-year-old Justin Wiens one of its 2014/2015 Top Scholars, after the Scarborough resident graduated from North York’s Senator O’Connor College School with a 99.5 per cent average. Justin, who attended Scarborough’s St. Agatha
Catholic School during his elementary years, moved to the North York high school to continue his Frenchimmersion education. The humble young man said he was a little surprised when he learned he was honoured by his school board. “I was pretty happy when I heard,” he said. “It feels good when you put in hard work and you get good results.” Justin, who is looking forward to studying engineering science at the University of Toronto in September, has

Olympic prudence needed in wake of Pan Am afterglow
Write us
W
e like the enthusiasm, goodwill and optimism Toronto’s Pan Am Games appear to have generated. But we must stress this is a time for prudence and caution as it relates to the Olympic Games and the city considering a bid. With the Pan Am Games portion of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games complete, what were once merely isolated whispers of a future Olympic bid for our city have grown noticeably louder – and in fairly fast fashion. As a concept, a Toronto Olympic bid is not an outrageous one. It really isn’t. Reviews of the Pan Am experience are largely positive. While there would be work needed to bring facilities up to Olympic standards, there’s been a good start made with the Pan Am/Parapan Am our view Games facilities. Also, the city’s and cultural diversity Objective review ethnic make Toronto an ideal showof Pan Am Games piece for a global event. And as the Pan Am Games the first step have shown, these kinds of events can serve as an important catalyst for needed infrastructure improvements that serve the community at large well after the Games have left town. But... one thing at a time, people. First, let’s have a proper assessment of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games – which aren’t even over yet. This review should provide relevant, objective information that can help inform not only an Olympic bid decision, but also ongoing aspects of life in the city, particularly as it relates to traffic and transit. Also, Toronto has been down this Olympic bid route before. The two most recent bids being the one for the 1996 (which went to Atlanta) and 2008 (which went to Beijing) Games. The bids alone are a significant undertaking. It’s worth examining what happened in those instances. The post-Pan Am Games euphoria for Toronto is understandable. Indeed, it’s better than the alternative. But it will take more than euphoria to fuel a legitimate Olympic bid. The city must assess its needs and capabilities. So let’s rush to the finish line, not to the starting gate. We all need to take a deep breath, and understand just what something like this would entail before we decide it’s the right course of action.

There’s a holiday on Monday? Seriously? Well, once again the civic holiday long weekend seems to have snuck up on everybody. It’s been a fixture on the calendar for a long time now, but just can’t seem to get on the public’s radar. The fact that it’s simply known as the civic holiday probably isn’t helping much. Its catchier handle here in Toronto, Simcoe Day, and one would assume more marketable one, never caught on for some reason. But it’s summer for heaven’s sake. The hottest part of the season, too. Shouldn’t that alone be enough to inject some serious pizzazz into the occasion, no matter what you call it? Anyhow, if it’s caught you by surprise, not to worry. There’s still plenty of time to make plans and lots to see and do in and out of the city. Here’s just a small sample:

Showdown in Spadina-Fort York It is going to be a hot time in Spadina-Fort York this summer and fall. Two of Toronto’s highestprofile progressive pols, Olivia Chow and Adam Vaughan, will be facing off in the newly minted riding. Vaughan, a former broadcast journalist and city councillor, is the incumbent of sorts; he has held the vanishing federal riding of Trinity-Spadina for a year, winning it for the Liberals in a byelection necessitated by New Democrat Chow’s departure to run an unsuccessful mayoral bid. It wasn’t a great surprise when Vaughan took the byelection. Indeed, voters in the NDP-supporting riding could have been forgiven for not realizing they weren’t voting NDP again when they elected Vaughan. Several of his colleagues privately wondered why he hadn’t joined Thomas Mulcair’s team, given all that. But Vaughan threw in with the Liberals for a pragmatic reason: in the spring of 2014, Justin Trudeau seemed the
david nickle the city best bet to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in government. Things appear very different in 2015. It’s not trending well for the Liberals, and the fortunes of Mulcair’s New Democrats have risen considerably. If the trend in polls continues, Vaughan will have to rely principally on his own record as a local representative – which is not inconsiderable. Chow, conversely, will be riding an orange wave propelled further by the profile she built during the 2014 mayoral campaign. She didn’t win, and didn’t, in the end, even run a terribly effective campaign. It was an honourable defeat. And there is that orange wave. In most elections, the NDP policy book shows up as a utopian document no one seriously thinks has a chance of being implemented. But this
time, promises to fund child care and public housing and transit infrastructure carry the weight of possibility. It will be a hard fight, for that. A year ago, Vaughan was a serious catch for Trudeau and the Liberals. On Tuesday, he made it clear he still is. “Olivia Chow has never given me a free ride in this city and I’ve prevailed,” Vaughan told reporters. And that much is true. He took over Chow’s seat on council when she left for Ottawa by beating her preferred candidate: now-city councillor) Joe Cressy. And the new riding concentrates Vaughan’s support, and contains polls where Chow did not do as well in her bid for mayor. What it boils down to: in 2015, it’s a good bet the new Member from Spadina-Fort York will be a member of the governing party. All other things being, in this case, nearly equal.

one overtime loss got them a bye through last weekend’s preliminary round. That one overtime loss, however, was to Cumberland, 20-13. Cumberland did play a preliminary round playoff game last weekend, winning 22-3 over the visiting North York-based Metro Toronto

OUT OF WORK? TOUGH LUCK. Hard times are about to get harder for Canada’s unemployed. Thanks to Harper’s Conservatives, thousands of Canadians who paid into Employment Insurance are being cut off from benefits, negatively impacting countless communities across Canada. This government is recklessly slashing essential public services, without regard for the rights and needs of all Canadians.

Platinum Home Design & Renovations will be celebrating 25 years of professional service and top quality products later this year thanks to its loyal and supportive customers. The local business, known for its windows and doors, was started in 1990 by Gus George. It has grown to be one of Toronto’s leading window and door renovators, servicing the GTA from Oshawa to Oakville and Newmarket to the lake. Platinum is committed to a uniform standard of excellence in service and workmanship. The team even has its own high quality brand of windows - Enerview. Platinum is so sure of the product that there is a lifetime guarantee on all windows. The windows also come with a Neat Glass coating. This coating uses UV rays and rain water to repel and remove dirt. Though it’s not unique to the company, Platinum is one of the only window companies that doesn’t charge an extra fee. It’s always included. Across the city and in your own neighbourhood, Platinum has established standards of quality in window and door installations which have resulted in thousands of satisfied customers. You can trust Platinum’s products and the installation. All installers are Window Wise certified. This means everything is done perfectly to code using the right methods and materials according to Canadian guidelines.
Before and after a Platinum door installation
You may not be sure if you need new windows or a new door, but make sure you don’t wait too long. It’s not uncommon to notice older or poorly installed windows increasing the cost of heating and cooling in a home. Platinum offers free quotes to anyone considering a change. A new door, the focal point of the home, is more of a personal choice while windows are often a necessity. This month, the company is offering a deal of 35 per cent off Enerview windows. This includes the option of 24 equal monthly payments with zero per cent interest or a free exterior paint upgrade for all windows. Visit www.platinumrenovations.com or call 416-609-0102 for more information.

Carnival’s many events offer a cultural celebration >>>from page 1 “It’s my culture. I love the artistry. I love the music. It brings culture together and brings people more knowledge on Caribbean history,” said McSween.

In November we come up with the colours,” said Saldenah. In April the glitter and jewels come out as the costumes enter the beginning stages of coming to life. Mas K will be showing off its theme, The Chronicles of Machel. The mas band started with 98 people and has grown to include more than 5,000 people, said Saldenah. When he isn’t helping to create the spectacle of Caribbean Carnival you can find Saldenah out on the golf course. “It’s how I like to relax,” he said. Relying heavily on the busy hands of approximately 100 volunteers, Saldenah is humbled and grateful for the team effort. “I look back over the years and I can say we have never
lost the integrity of the costume design and it’s because of the people I surround myself with. They make me look good,” he said. Vo l u n t e e r Na d i a Chapman, has been helping to make costumes for 10 years. “It’s t h e p e o p l e, t h e energy, the atmosphere,” said Chapman. A volunteer of seven years, Tara Ross is proud to be a part of putting together something that helps express the beauty of her culture, she said. “It’s the way that we express ourselves, it’s the way we are able to be free. Not only in this country but also in other countries that celebrate Carnival. It’s to celebrate our freedom and for that one day just let go,” said Ross. The King and Queen event will take place today at 7 p.m. at Allan Lamport Stadium, 1151 King Street West. The Grand Parade is slated for Saturday at Exhibition Place at 9:30 a.m.

Now the Pan Am Games have concluded, extended transit service is also largely over. The TTC ran plenty of extra service during the Games, including earlier Sunday subway starts, and received sterling reviews for the most part. With the Pan Am portion of the Games over, the TTC is largely back to regular levels of summer service. But there’s still shuttle service planned to venues holding the Parapan Am Games when they kick off Friday, Aug. 7.

The carpool feature allowed two passengers headed in the same direction to share the cost of a single ride. Uber plans to bring the carpooling option back to Toronto permanently.

Uber’s Pan Am carpool service was a hit, says the rideshare provider. Approximately 33,000 people made use of uberPOOL during the service’s two-week trial run during the Games, the company said in a statement. Most of the trips took place in the downtown core and on Games HOV lanes that were restricted to

You’ve got until the end of the month to provide feedback for the future expansion of the Toronto bike network. Head to www.torontocyclingnetwork.metroquest.ca to pick and choose via interactive maps which cycling priorities the city should tackle over the next decade, and which ones shouldn’t be considered a priority.
The deadline for feedback is Saturday. The city is also planning to hold drop-in events in August. For more information on those events, check out www. toronto.ca/cyclingnetwork QUAY USERS STILL FIGURING IT OUT wQUEENS
Queens Quay was recently re-opened after an ambitious redesign that saw the dingy concrete afterthought transformed into a multifaceted promenade that has proved a hit, judging by the hundreds of revellers last weekend. But with increased traffic comes confusion – and sometimes fisticuffs – as evidenced by a recent video of an altercation between a cyclist and pedestrian captured on the street, which added signage hasn’t been able to prevent. I even saw a vehicle travelling on the Martin Goodman Path on Saturday night, which is supposed to be reserved for cyclists’ use.

TTC pledges better off-peak rides on busy bus, streetcar routes RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC is pledging improved crowding conditions on 33 busy bus and streetcar routes during off-peak travel periods. The routes in question will see more frequent service, shorter wait times and offer riders a far greater opportunity to get a seat outside of the usual rush hour times, promised TTC chair Josh Colle, who was joined by Mayor John Tory and Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti for the announcement. Colle said the move reverses past service reductions to off-peak service through TTC budget cuts mandated during the mayoral term of Rob Ford, which resulted in regularly crowded buses and streetcars and more discomfort for riders. “I think we got to a point where the previous adminWe’re addressing istration was crowding standards saying and moving toward just cram as many more comfortable people and customeronto a friendly levels. bus as possible – TTC chair Josh Colle and it will take care of itself,” said Colle during a press conference Monday at Finch Station, which has six bus routes slated to receive better offpeak service as of September. “By implementing this service improvement we’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. We’re listening to our loyal and very patient customers.” The new service will be funded through a $95-million budget boost made by city council earlier in the year for the TTC’s annual operating needs, and includes previously announced commitments for better all-night bus service and an enhanced 10-minute-or-better network. The funding commitment also funds the TTC’s recent move to make service completely free for kids. Currently the TTC’s off-peak load-

ing standard for frequent service routes is to carry more riders than seats – articulated buses large enough to seat 46 have an acceptable standard of 53, for example – a move that was made simply to save money following the 2012 cuts, admitted TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold. That will change as of
September. “This move today is to say it doesn’t actually makes sense to have a different crowding standard based on the frequency of service,” said Upfold.

Pan Am Games traffic plan declared a success, though official stats not yet released The multi-partner agency responsible for co-ordinating traffic during the Pan Am Games is confident its transportation planning proved a success, even though it’s not yet ready to release any data indicating so. The Unified Transportation Coordination Centre (UTCC), which continuously monitored Toronto
region roadways before and during the Games, is not ready to release any official transit stats. The Pan Am Games ended Sunday. There’s also no information available from the Games’ Integrated Security Unit as to how many tickets were issued for misuse of special carpool lanes designated primarily to transport Games’ athletes and
personnel. That information could be made publicly available as early as this week, said ISU spokesperson Devin Kealey. The TTC’s Brad Ross also could not provide figures indicating how well the transit commission did providing transportation options for tens of thousands of Games goers. When the numbers are released,
UTCC spokesperson Andrew Posluns is confident they’ll show travel times improved during the Games. “We are seeing an improvement in travel times across the region and we see the plan we spent those years putting in place is working,” said Posluns. “But one of the things we’re mindful of is we’re gathering information from a lot of sources. And
we will need to take that away and do our due-diligence and make sure we can verify what we’ve seen before putting out a definitive assessment as far as how we’ve done for travel times during the Games.” Posluns, UTCC executive director, was part of a team tasked with continuously monitoring Toronto region roadways during the Games.

especially those who suffer from the virus are beginning to see the top of the peak. D r. R a f f y C h o u l j i a n , o f Scarborough, has been an active volunteer with The Rotary Club of Toronto Don Mills and its campaign to conquer polio. Since 1985, Rotary International has contributed more than $1.4 billion toward ridding the world of polio. Chouljian travelled to India in February to take part in National Immunization Day and was touched by what he witnessed. “Seeing it first-hand made me want to do something more,” said Chouljian. “People in Canada think polio has been eradicated, but it’s not.”
As the World Health Organization is hoping to remove Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries, Chouljian is pleased to see the end to the virus is in sight. Witnessing the debilitating effects of the virus as he watched a 17 year old on crutches during his trip was what hit home, Chouljian said. “It was knowing that if he would have been vaccinated, he wouldn’t have to be on crutches,” he said. Alongside nine colleagues, Chouljian is gearing up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro next year in solidarity for those who suffer from polio, said his daughter, Maral Chouljian, also an advocate in the fight against polio. Scarborough North Dental Group will be sponsoring the team’s Polio
Climb. The dental group will pay for all associated costs of the climb as well as donate $10,000 to Rotary International. The initiative, Conquer Kilimanjaro, Conquer Polio aims to raise $100,000 towards vaccinations each costing 60 cents. Vaccinations are the simple way to prevent the virus from spreading or from making a comeback, said Chouljian. “Sixty cents is nothing,” he said. Given her father’s passion for ending the virus, it was only natural Maral would become involved as well. “Growing up, my dad taught me so much about polio and it’s shocking that it’s still around,” she said. Chouljian’s Polio Climb is in part-
nership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that has pledged to match donations two-to-one in fundraising for vaccination efforts. Nigeria will be the last African nation to become polio-free, but the virus is still widespread in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. Vaccinations are the key to keeping polio at bay, Maral and her father agree. “Just because it’s gone now doesn’t mean it can’t come back,” said Maral. well-deserved standing ovation was given to the cast and crew of Guild Festival Theatre’s opening night performance of Romeo & Juliet at the Greek Stage at the Guild Park. The classic love story by William Shakespeare is the quintessential tale about two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet (Jovan Kocic, Lindsey Middleton), who are determined to be together despite a longstanding feud between their families. If thoughts of Shakespeare conjure up awful memories of having to read or act out scenes from one of his plays in high school, this production can change your mind. Well-performed, easily understood and a fluent, beautiful story, this is the way everyone should see Romeo & Juliet. The way the dialogue is spoken, the modern dress and the performances make it completely understandable without taking away from the original story or dialogue. A masquerade ball at the Capulets’, the home of Juliet, her mother Lady Capulet (Kaya Bucholc) and her father, referred to as Capulet (Michael McLeister), is promised to be a night of good company and entertainment, and where Romeo meets Juliet. Accompanied by Mercutio (Marcus Bernacci) and Benvolio (Emilio Vieira), the three are amongst their “enemies” but are hidden by their masks, making Lady Capulet, her husband, Paris (Shawn Parsons), who is betrothed to Juliet, and Tybalt (Marcus Haccius) none the wiser. However, amongst the loud music and dancing at the party, there comes a

moment when Romeo and Juliet come together and profess their love for one another. It is a touching scene, when everything becomes quiet and their chemistry louder than the music. As they embrace, Nurse (Laura Meadows) happens upon the forbidden couple, and they vow to meet later that evening. Not wanting to live without each other, they decide to marry in secret and tell their families later. As in many love stories nothing goes as planned, and the two are up against some impossible odds at happiness and some hard choices to make. Amazing cast Besides being beautifully performed by a cast of amazingly talented actors, a true testament to their skills, as well as director Jamie Robinson, is that the story was the star of the show. The cast is a great mixture of fresh theatre graduates and seasoned veterans including Christopher Kelk as Friar Laurence, Gordon Gresko as Montague, and McLeister as Capulet. Their professionalism and talent bring an authenticity and realness to this show, and they embody their roles amazingly well. Bernacci’s portrayal of the outgoing and eccentric
Mercutio is amazing. His comedic talent and freespirited portrayal gives the audience many memorable and funny moments. Scenes with Bernacci, Vieira as Benvolio and Kocic as Romeo are some of the funniest and entertaining ones in the show. The ladies also shine in this show, most notably Meadows as Juliet’s faithful nurse and Bucholc as Lady Capulet. They give strong performances, especially in scenes with Juliet. Kocic and Middleton are fantastic as Romeo and Juliet. Their chemistry is believable and these two talented performers are fantastic both individually, and in scenes together. This show contains a talented cast, a beautiful setting and Shakespeare that is accessible to all. The production is dedicated to founding artistic director of Guild Festival Theatre, Sten Erik, who died suddenly in April. It was his dream to stage Romeo & Juliet, and this cast and crew undoubtedly make him proud. Romeo & Juliet runs until Aug. 9 at the Greek Stage at Guild Park, 201 Guildwood Parkway. Tickets are $25, $20 for students and seniors and children under 12 get in free.

Paralympic gold medalist takes on new role with Canadian team Toronto Parapan Am Games open on Aug. 7 DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Chelsea Gotell is a bit jealous. The three-time Paralympic swimmer and five-time Paralympic gold medalist has competed around the world – but never once right at home. “As a retired athlete I’m pretty jealous,” said Gotell, waiting with a crew of Pan Am athletes to purchase tickets for the upcoming Toronto 2015 Parapan Games. Home soil “I never got to compete on home soil, to have this awareness-building opportunity, not for sport in Canada but for Para Sport. This is absolutely ginormous.” Gotell is participating in
the Games that begin Aug. 7 as a member of Team Canada’s Mission Staff. “I’m the athlete mentor for the whole team,” she said. “I’ve done this in London and in Socchi. I’m glad to support the athletes with whatever they need – whether it’s help with the pressure or they could just be asking for chocolate milk.” Tickets On Tuesday she was on hand to help encourage Torontonians to buy tickets for the events, along with Pan Am athletes Zack Chetrat, Pan Am bronze medalist and cocaptain of the Canadian swim team; Brittany MacLean, Pan Am bronze medalist; and Julia Wilkinson, two-time Olympic swimmer. According to TO2015
spokesperson Neala Barton, so far the Parapan Am Games have sold 50,000 out of 200,000 tickets. “It is exactly where we would expect to be,” said Barton, who said most ticket sales will likely come as the Games begin. “When people start to see it happen they want to come and support the athletes – they’re often very late sales.” The Toronto 2015 Parapan Games will feature 15 sports at 11 venues, with 1,600 athletes taking part from 28 countries. The Games will officially open at the CIBC Pan Am/ Parapan Am Athletics Stadium at York University on Aug. 7 and continue until Aug. 15
