A guitar signed by Canadian music legend Gordon Lightfoot will be auctioned off at a benefit concert in honour of Scarborough murder victim Tyler McGill. “It’s incredible that he endorsed our benefit by signing it,” said event organizer Randy Baker. “It’s an amazing signature to get.” The event takes place Sunday from 2 to 10 p.m. at Queen Victoria Pub, 2240 Midland Ave. McGill, 22, was a gifted musician whose life was cut short in the summer of 2007 in what friends and family call “a senseless act of random violence.”

“The risk of acquiring Lyme disease in Toronto is considered low,” Dr. Howard Shapiro, Toronto’s associate medical officer of health, told media gathered in the park – one of three areas of the city identified as having blacklegged ticks. “This is a time of year when individuals and families start to enjoy the warm weather outdoors, so it’s important that people are aware of where ticks have been found in the city and
how to prevent Lyme disease,” added Shapiro. “It’s important that residents know that they can reduce the risk of getting bit by a tick by taking precautions when they’re outdoors in brushy or wooded areas where ticks may be found.” Along with Morningside Park, Rouge Park and Algonquin Island have been identified by TPH as areas where blacklegged ticks are most likely to be found 5-Star Safety Ra Ratings More Stars. ‘Officer John’ of Uncle Bobby show remembered John Patterson served with Toronto police for more than 30 years; promoted traffic safety was a way to reach a large number of people.” Patterson passed away April 16 at Seven Oaks Long Term Care in Scarborough. He was 86. Patterson joined the Toronto police force in August 1951 and quickly rose to fame. In October 1955, he was in the news for his sharpshooting. “Someone was robbing a store, and dad drew his revolver and shot the gun out of the person’s hand,” Bates said. “Dad always swore ‘I was just lucky’ but it was obviously his skill that he was able to do that.” In the 1960s, Patterson transferred to the traffic safety bureau where he regularly appeared on Uncle Bobby as “Officer John.” He also helped design Blinky, the talking police car, which he used to spread safety
ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
John Patterson may have been the most popular Toronto police officer in the 1960s and ‘70s. And perhaps also the most influential on children. The longtime Wexford resident promoted road safety while being a recurring guest on the Uncle Bobby children’s TV show at the CFTO studios in Scarborough, and a regular visitor to schools throughout both Scarborough and North York. “It was quite an exciting time. You couldn’t go anywhere in Scarborough without someone knowing Officer John,” said Heather Bates, Patterson’s eldest daughter. “He was just a kind person who wanted kids to be safe, and it (Uncle Bobby show)
pin to give out when stopped by a young fan. “You couldn’t go into the grocery store without (someone saying) ‘Officer John’ or ‘There he is.’ He was very well known,” Bates said. “Dad just rolled with it. It was just who he was. He was just always kind and always had time for people if they came to speak with him.” Two of Patterson’s children, son Jim and daughter Sam, followed in his footsteps and joined the police service. “He was the face of the safety bureau,” Jim said of his father. “He was a shy guy in a way, but he certainly liked the attention. He was always more than happy to stop and speak with a child, but I think he was embarrassed by the attention at times.” Patterson retired in April 1984 though his legacy lived

messages. Patterson was also known for using Elmer the safety elephant in the school safety program. No one will ever know how many lives were saved
because of the safety programs he ran, Bates said. “He was a rather famous man in his day,” said Bates, noting her father always had an Elmer sticker or a Blinky
on. “My dad was in a nursing home for the past three years of his life, and people in the nursing home recognized who he was,” Bates said. As a tribute to the legendary officer, Blinky was brought to his funeral. “I think he got a lot of joy out of Blinky because the kids were always excited about that,” Bates noted. Patterson grew up in the Beach and attended Duke of Connaught, Adam Beck and Danforth Tech. He moved to Scarborough’s Warden and Lawrence avenues area with his wife Barbara in the early ‘50s, and they lived there for six decades. “Work and family. That was his life,” Jim said. Patterson leaves behind five children, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Walk in My Mocs helps teens dealing with bullying, depression MiKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com They survived all the bullies, fought their own fears and self-doubts. Now, they can help other teenagers who might be harming themselves. “This is your battle,” a youth named Chris told a mostly-young audience this week in a KingstonGalloway gymnasium in Scarborough. Bullying played a part in his depression and self-harm – those many times, he said, when he walked into school and was called “faggot,” a “douchebag,” or “future serial killer.” A member of the Walk in My Mocs group for the area’s aboriginal youth, Chris said he wants to help people in

Jacob, a young artist, painted this picture for the ‘Walk in My Mocs’ youth group in Scarborough’s Kingston-GallowayOrton Park neighbourhood. The painting, one of several displayed May 4 during an event at which aboriginal youth talked about their struggles against ‘self harm,’ shows how some people see Jacob and how he sees himself.
ways he wasn’t helped. He wants to talk to them
and see if they’re OK, tell them to “be your own person,” and
learn to shrug off bad things people say. Courtney, who also spoke from the stage Wednesday, Ma y 4 , a t Ma p l e w o o d Secondary School, faced bullying too, witnessed drug and alcohol abuse, and felt something else was missing from her life, stability. “I never really knew where to call home,” Courtney said, explaining she and her sisters were raised mainly by a grandmother who held the family together. She learned she had to take care of herself, and that “the hardest prison to escape is your mind.” But Courtney managed to beat her depression, and believes other youth can too. “To those who are suffering, you’re not alone,” she
said. “Sometimes you have to restart a hundred times, and it’s frustrating, but it’ll be OK; you can do this.” The group, which formed last December and meets Wednesdays at the Native Child and Family Centre (NCFC) on Galloway Road, produced a video, shown at Maplewood, dramatizing some reasons why youth might harm themselves. It wasn’t easy for them to stand up and talk about topics like these, said Ryan Besito, a NCFC staff member. “They want to help, and I think they’ve proved themselves today.” Another Walk in My Mocs member, Chad, said kids are always facing judgements that hurt – people calling them too tall, too skinny, too short,
too fat – and the fear of being alone. Two and a half years ago, “I stayed in my room for, like, seven months straight,” he recalled. “Opening up and talking to people, it feels a thousand times better.” Some youth produced art showing how they felt. Jacob, one of the artists, painted a scene showing the way many people see him, and the way he sees himself. At the bottom of the painting are four masks on pedestals, labelled: sloth, loneliness, silence and emptiness. But above the masks on a stage are four figures, each representing a part of Jacob he would like to show the world – his love for games, music, adventure and pizza.

Go top speed on cycling plan T he 10-year cycling plan proposed by the city this week that could see hundreds of kilometres of cycling infrastructure built is certainly ambitious and one that is worth going after in an expeditious manner. The plan is large in scale featuring 525 kilometres of new infrastructure with bike lanes and cycle tracks proposed in neighbourhoods across the entire city. This should generate excitement as there seems to be a city-building opportunity here with feasibility studies planned on some of Toronto’s major street corridors including Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor Street from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Kingston Road. Like public transit, this plan has the potential of connecting and moving Toronto residents by providing more travel alternatives especially for those living in the our view edges of the city where affordable transportation options are Network of woefully lacking. Building a connected network bike lanes will of bike lanes throughout the connect city city could also encourage more people to ride their bicycles on safer, designated routes. The benefits of doing so are many, such as helping reduce traffic gridlock, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and decreasing the number of cycling fatalities. The timing also seems right with growing support from cycling advocates as well as the political will to take action on these issues. Last week’s approval by Toronto Council for a pilot project to put separated bicycle lanes on Bloor Street is a good start. Of course, an ambitious plan like this has financial implications with the city recommending five levels of funding starting from $8 million a year that would allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects, and $12 million a year to see half the projects go ahead. But this shouldn’t be done piecemeal and spending $20 million a year to complete the whole project in 10 years is warranted. With careful planning, community consultation, and financial accountability, the plan should proceed forward as soon as possible. Any delays in implementation could see costs rise and leave Toronto further behind other major cities when it comes to transportation infrastructure. It’s about time a city like Toronto catches up and becomes more connected.

Cabbies and left-wing councillors lose in Uber debate Last week’s vote on Uber at Toronto City Council did undeniable harm to two very vulnerable groups in our city. Taxi drivers form one of those groups. The suite of amendments moved by Mayor John Tory and approved by a solid majority of Toronto councillors makes the lives of drivers who don’t own their own plates undeniably worse. Licenced taxi drivers come away from the debate with less stable income, in a position that makes it virtually impossible to compete with a potential flood of Uber-X cars and drivers. And then there is that other vulnerable group – one that’s not vulnerable economically or socially perhaps, but is practically an endangered species in the political ecology of Toronto City Hall: Toronto’s small but vocal group of left-wing councillors. Tory left them gasping
david nickle the city in disbelief, after he abandoned a long negotiation with them to come up with a more progressive and taxi driver-friendly set of amendments, to make a sharp turn to the right and champion a very different, very Uber-friendly set of amendments. Those amendments mollified some of the bigger voices on the right – notably Giorgio Mammoliti and Jim Karygiannis. But they left the leadership on the left – Janet Davis, Gord Perks, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell – seething more than usual. The negotiations had been long, and the left went into the May council meeting thinking they had a deal. The reversal was a clear indication that the left could count on no reli-
able negotiations with the mayor’s office, so there was no point in trying. None of this should concern Tory much. While it’s true he has promised to bring Toronto Council together in a way that no other mayor has, the reality is that Tory does not really need to do so in order to govern. His natural allies, council’s centrists and right wing, will support him on most matters. If the mayor wants to put policy in place that strays to the left, he can rely on council’s left without a thought. Is the left going to vote against bike lanes, public housing dollars, public health matters? Given that Tory’s mandate seems to be based on offering comfort to voters of nearly every political persuasion, will the left really be able to bring forward a credible, winning mayoral candidate in 2018?
Council’s left wing meanwhile, is in a corner. Unless a Bernie Sanders municipal figure emerges very soon, there is very little that a left-leaning councillor can do to harm Tory politically, particularly as Tory is far more likely to face a strong challenger from the right. And as was demonstrated last week, there is scarcely more that left-wing councillors can accomplish in working with Tory and his staff. They can vote for policies they agree with, of course, but influence them? Put a mark on them? Well they can certainly try – if, that is, they can put from their minds the May 2016 council meeting, when they and Toronto’s cab drivers both lost it all.

Spotlight on Literacy in KingstonGallowayOrton Park Reading is about more than just books. At first glance, it’s an odd message for an annual event that has given away thousands of books to get kids reading in Kingston-Galloway-Orton Park. But Spotlight on Literacy, which returns today, knows books are not the only way to teach literacy to children. So does Randell Adjei, founder of the weekly RISE (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere) Edutainment spoken-word workshops in Scarborough. As a child growing up in KGO, Adjei didn’t much like to read, but a teacher saw he was good at writing, a gift he didn’t recognize in himself, he recalled this week. Adjei said the power of literacy helped him overcome his challenges. “I started developing a thirst for knowledge,” he said. In Adjei’s case, literacy led to a love for poetry. Poetry is hip hop culture, which allows people to express themselves, but “like anything in life, you have to know the fundamentals,” he said. Adjei agreed it’s sometimes hard to get children to care about what they’re told to read in school, but said educators should try tying learning what children love. If they love basketball, even basketball requires literacy fundamentals, he said. Hosted by The Reading Partnership, a local non-profit group dedicated to giving parents the skills and confidence needed to get children reading, Spotlight will be at Sir Robert L. Borden Business and Technical Institute from 5 to 8 p.m. Around 1,500 books, community resources and food will be given away. Spotlight started four years ago after tests showed nearly half of all third graders in KGO were reading below the provincial standard. – Mike Adler

Liberals ‘should be ashamed’ of treatment of Scarborough and its hospitals: Horwath MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto A n d r e a Ho r w a t h s a y s Ontario’s Liberal government “should be ashamed” about treating Scarborough and its hospitals with such disrespect. The government moved last month to support recommendations for some expensive hospital projects in Scarborough and west Durham, including planning for new hospitals to serve each region. But Horwath, Ontario’s New Democratic Par ty leader, said the Liberal administration previously “turned its back” on calls for upgrading Scarborough hospitals, and results can be seen in the state of their emergency rooms and operating rooms. “The crisis in health care in Scarborough has been created by this government,” Horwath said in an interview Monday. Health care unions and the NDP have been hitting in a more general way at the Liberals for freezing hospital budgets over the past four years. Horwath and the Ontario Nurses’ Association on
Monday called for a “moratorium” on cuts to nursing in the province’s hospitals. T h e O n t a r i o He a l t h Coalition charged last month hospital budget cuts have led to overcrowding, cancelled surgeries, patients being discharged too early, ambulance delays, infections, and other problems.
“
The crisis in health care in Scarborough has been created by this government. – Andrea Horwath, provincial NDP leader
The Liberals have pointed out hospitals set their own budgets. Hospitals often describe the replacement of registered nurses with registered practical nurses or other staff as adjustments meant to deliver “the right care at the right time,” and not as cuts affecting patient care. But Horwath said hospital CEOs are desperate, and are forced into making damaging cuts in Scarborough and elsewhere. She pledged an NDP government would give hospitals

Provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath says Scarborough has been treated with disrespect by the Liberal government in the area of health care.
stable funding and annual increases that at least keep up with inflation and population growth. Horwath said an Ontario government should make
health care its first priority. Such arguments could be repeated soon in a byelection campaign brought on by the surprise March resignation of Scarborough-
Seven-way race for Scarborough-Rouge River Local Liberals to choose provincial nominee June 5 The struggle to carry the Liberal banner in Scarborough-Rouge River is now a seven-way contest including an ex-New Democrat and a former Green. Ve t e r a n M P P B a s Balkissoon’s sudden resignation in March set the riding up for a provincial byelection that is still to be called. But local Liberals will gather on June 5 to choose a nominee from seven contenders. One is Rathika Sitsabaiesan, the federal riding’s MP until
last fall, when Sitsabaiesan ran for re-election as a New Democrat and lost. Another is George Singh, an anti-carding activist who ran previously in the riding for the federal and provincial Green parties. In a statement Tuesday, Singh said he wants to “continue the effective leadership” the riding had under former Liberal MPPs Balkissoon and Alvin Curling. “In order to accomplish that goal we need someone who understands the needs of our community, how to work effectively with government, and who has a fresh new perspective,” he said. First to declare he was seeking the nomination, however, was Piragal Thiru, a vice president of the Ontario
Liberal Party and a former executive member of the Canadian Tamil Congress. Other choices on Nomination Day are Viresh Mathur, a long-time party member in the riding, and Dewitt Lee, who has twice run as a Toronto mayoral candidate. Late on Tuesday, the provincial party identified two other potential candidates, Ashan Fernando and Kiri Karthigesu. “This is very diverse group of individuals, from various walks of life, and truly do represent the diversity in Scarborough-Rouge River,” said Ryan Singh, the Liberal riding association president. Many other people expressed interest in the race,
but the deadline to apply has now passed, he said on Tuesday, May 10. Progressive Conservatives in the riding will choose their candidate on June 4. Kabirul Mollah, the PC riding president, said at least 10 people have taken nomination forms, and interviews of potential nominees are in progress. The Ontario NDP said it will hold a nomination meeting on May 26, but hasn’t released the names of potential candidates. Neethan Shan, a New Democrat who has run in the riding before, has said he might seek the NDP nomination. There is no announced nomination date yet for a Green candidate. – Mike Adler
Rouge River Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon. After the Scarborough announcement, Ontario Public Service Employees Union President Warren (Smokey) Thomas called for more details, and suggested Liberal “empty promises” did not make up for consecutive years of hospital budget cuts: “This sounds to me like a government that is getting ready for an important byelection,” Thomas said in a release. Asked if the announcement was made with the byelection in mind, Horwath said she “wouldn’t put it past the Liberals.” In 2004, she recalled, she won a byelection in Hamilton, during which the ruling party “put everything but the kitchen sink into Hamilton.” But people in Hamilton saw through the Liberals, and Scarborough residents will too, Horwath said. Progressive Conservatives in Scarborough-Rouge River choose their byelection candidate on June 4, and the Liberals on June 5. New Democrats will hold their nomination on May 26.
Olympian spends Mother’s Day with hockey daughters Scarborough Olympic hockey veteran Natalie Spooner spent most of Mother’s Day on Sunday helping out a couple of hundred young daughters. Spooner, who helped Canada to a gold medal at the last Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 and is also the star player for the Toronto Furies of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, chipped in for the 5th annual Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest in Toronto. One of five across the country, it attracted more than 350 young female aspiring hockey players to the MasterCard Centre in south Etobicoke for a day of fun and instruction.

Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,
while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. Interested people can register for a free hearing test and trial of the Audéo V by calling 1.888.408.7377

What would you do if you found a bag of money? Scarborough bus driver Daniel Clavette didn’t think twice, and on Friday he was recognized for his honesty. At about 5:50 p.m. May 2, Clavette was driving the 9 Bellamy bus when an elderly man brought him a knapsack that was left behind by a fellow passenger. At Scarborough Centre Station, Clavette opened the backpack in the hopes of finding ID. Instead, he came across funeral papers and envelopes containing stacks of $100 bills. A lot of cash

Judging by the thickness of the stacks, Clavette knew he had a lot of cash, so he contacted transit control to turn over his find. “Then the supervisor said, ‘How much money are we looking at, $1,000 or $100?’” Clavette recalled. “I said, ‘No, I’m holding one envelope with I think $10,000 and there are more (envelopes),’ so (they) sent a supervisor.” The bag in fact contained $50,000 and was reunited with its rightful owner a short time later. The man who left behind the knapsack recently lost his mother, and it’s believed the cash was an inheritance.

TTC driver Daniel Clavette was honoured for finding and handing in a bag with $50,000 in it.
Toronto Police Supt. John Tanouye said the man was at the 41 Division station reporting the lost bag when “we get a phone call from the TTC saying they just found a substantial amount of money, so we connected them up.” On Friday, Tanouye recognized Clavette for his “honesty and integrity in the performance of his duties.” “It’s not every day somebody turns in $50,000,” Tanouye said. “He’s a Good Samaritan. It’s an act of kind-
ness.” Clavette said he found the honour a bit overwhelming. “I was just doing my job,” he added. TTC spokesman Brad Ross noted riders have left many odd items on public transit over the years. “We’ve had prosthetic legs, we’ve had mobility scooters,” he said. “But $50,000 in a knapsack, no.” Ross described Clavette as a role model who “does the TTC proud.”

Car and owner sought by police in fatal shootings ANDREW PALAMARCHUK
85 Ellesmere Rd. at 9:47 p.m. on April 29. The shooter allegedly fled in a grey, four-door, 2006 Ford Fusion, licence plate BYYW 755. Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux of the homicide squad said a citizen took a photo of the getaway car in the parking lot as it sped away. “Another citizen recorded the licence plate of the suspect vehicle
apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Police are appealing for help in locating the getaway car in a double murder outside a Scarborough LCBO. Police said the gunman approached an SUV and fired into the back seat, killing Joseph Anzolona, 25, and Cynthia Mullapudi, 24, in the parking of the LCBO at
and repeated to himself over and over again until he had an opportunity to record the licence plate in his cellphone,” he said, adding police want to recover the car as it has “significant investigative value.” On May 1, Harris Nnane, 24, of Toronto was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Giroux alleged that the Ford Fusion is registered to 24-year-
old Julianna Talevski and that she has a connection to the accused. “I can’t at this point say for certain that she was present at the scene,” he told reporters during a news conference Friday. “I’ve made efforts to determine her whereabouts through her family initially and so far I have been unsuccessful.” Investigators believe
Anzolona, who was known to police, was the target of the homicide. A man and a woman in the front seat of the SUV weren’t hurt. Giroux said Mullapudi was a “totally innocent victim” who knew the woman in the front passenger seat but had just met the two men in the vehicle that night. “We detailed the police in the middle of the night to do
every parent’s worst nightmare: to knock on a door and tell them that their daughter wasn’t coming home,” he added. “They indicated that they were concerned over the fact that she was late and they were waiting up for her until the police came to the door.”

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been s successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Andre Ouimet, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the Scarborough, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-
lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debts. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Andre Ouimet, andre.ouimet@ e x p e r t m o r t g a g e b r o k e r. ca www.GTAemergency.ca, 647-700-9014 1-888-982-7954

Provincial funding for upgrades Ambitious plan for cycling network across city revealed to West Hill, Laurier collegiates DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com
MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
It will cost $20 million a year over the next decade for Toronto to build the entirety of its 10-year cycling plan. The ambitious plan to spread a cycling network across Toronto will be coming to the May 16 meeting of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. The plan features a total of 525 kilometres of new cycling infrastructure, which adds up to 1,050 kilometres of cycle lanes counting each direction. The plan would see feasibility studies at least for cityspanning bike lanes or cycle tracks extended on Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and further along Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Kingston Road. Jane Street would see a bike lane from south of Hwy. 401 to Steeles Avenue; on Kingston Road from Eglinton Avenue to the Highland Creek Trail; on Kipling Avenue from Bloor Street to the Waterfront Trail; on Midland Avenue from Steeles
As one east Scarborough high school prepares to close, the province is spending more than $2 million to improve two others. The Toronto District School Board says Sir Robert Borden Business and Technical Institute will no longer be a school for local students after this June. The board told residents about what could happen to the Poplar Road building, including a possible sale, at a public meeting at the school last night, after The Scarborough Mirror’s press time. Last week, however, Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals announced grants totalling $2.14 million for West Hill and Sir Wilfrid Laurier collegiates, where many Robert Borden students will go next year. There will be a new greenhouse at Laurier and a new industrial kitchen and cosmetology lab at West Hill, Sandals said during a visit to that Morningside

down to Lawrence Avenue; and the Gatineau Trail to the Waterfront Trail. Lake Shore Boulevard West would also see a bike path between Mississauga and the Humber River as part of the plan. Also included in the plan are off-road cycling routes, and routes along quieter streets. The question of how to pay for the plans will be up to committee and council. Staff have recommended five levels of funding: $8 mil-
lion a year would only allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects. The $12-million plan would allow 51 per cent to go ahead. Spending $16 million a year allow 85 per cent of the proposed networks to go forward. Annual funding of $20 million would allow delivery of all projects in 10 years. Spending $25 million a year would let the whole project be finished in six to seven years.

The Big Red Eight expands reach The $8 men’s haircut is suddenly part of Bathurst Street in North York, like bagels, kosher sushi, Filipino groceries, and tombstones. Having migrated over from Scarborough, where it’s become the $7 haircut in places, it’s now offered in five spots on Bathurst between Lawrence and Steeles. But it’s not a franchise, it’s a sales strategy: put a big red eight on the window, get customers in and out in 15 minutes, and turn a profit. A man whose family name is Yang claims he started the first $8 haircut place in Scarborough 10 years ago. Two years ago he opened his second, Hair Joy, at Sheppard and Bathurst. It was busy last week, with Yang directing stylists in six chairs. But Yang, who’s from Fujian Province, China, looked weary. Competition is making it tougher to make the numbers add up. A year from now, he said, there might be 10 $8 haircut joints in North York, or 20.
mike adler edges of toronto Supercuts and First Choice stores, where a men’s cut costs between $17.46 and $19.15, seem free to raise or vary their price. But his $8, already very low, cannot move. Any cheaper, Yang said, and it’s hard to make money, but now his customers won’t accept a $9 haircut. “We tried to charge more, but cannot make it work.” Across Bathurst at Hair Sweety, which also cuts men for $8, and kids for $6, a barber named Mario said some stores advertise $8, but charge you $12. Now retired and working part-time, he started in a barber shop and beauty salon when he was nine, in Italy. “We don’t sell the merchandise, we sell service,” Mario said, cleaning his brushes, when asked about the $8 cut. “I don’t under-
stand what’s happened.” At Eli’s Barber Shop down the street, Richard Paczok said it’s impossible for him to cut hair for $8. Paczok grew up in a barbershop in Budapest, Hungary, and went to barber school there for three years. He and his partner charge $25, or $20 for an easy cut. The $8 haircutters won’t do a good job, he said, and most of their barbers leave. The $8 cut is not taking his business, said Paczok. “It even brings more people, who say they’ll never go back.” The $8 places could take a little more time with customers, charge people $15, and find more barbers, too, he added. But four blocks south, Hair J, open less than a month, waited for customers, the same big red eight on the window and signs outside.

Change is a predictable part of life be it in journalism or taxi rides The only thing constant in life is change. Growing up on the older end of the millennial generation, I know this cliché to be true. Before my eyes, the music industry has gone from cassette tape to compact disc to mp3s to streaming; homes have increasingly become cable-less, giving rise to a
on its head as digital platforms and social media change the way news is gathered, packaged, consumed. Worried about the viability of my career choice, I am constantly told to adapt or die. As the latest disruption unfolds, I watch once again from the sidelines. The first time I used

the best way – when the phone’s dead or the credit card’s maxed or when I’m running late in downtown Toronto and the streetcar is nowhere in sight, but dozens of cabs are. On my many travels over the last year and a half, I’ve often turned that awkward small talk between driver and passenger into one discussion: The Uber versus Taxi War. Ironically, though they may be on different sides of the war, the drivers’ narratives are often similar. The work is a struggle. High expenses, low rewards. Rider safety and satisfaction is of the utmost importance. My stance (as someone who still buys physical CDs, books and maga-
zines) is that there is room for both, because for all those who swear by Uber, there will be others who won’t have any part in it. For people unhappy with Toronto Council’s new ground transportation bylaw, remember that when disruptive change arrives, industries and governments must adapt. The 100 amendments may not satisfy everyone, but they are a step, and also need not be set in stone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that more change is most definitely on its way. Work N Wear brings brand name work apparel to Markham The name you’ve trusted in work wear since 1975 has moved to Markham. Work N Wear specializes in clothing, work boots and work gloves for the working person. In all of Work N Wear’s five locations, you will find brand name work apparel such as Carharrt, Tough Duck, Dickies, and many more. The store also boasts the largest selection of work boots, including brands like Terra, Kodiak, Cat, Baffin, Timberland and Big Bill. The new Work N Wear store is located at 7701 Woodbine Ave., Unit 4. “We’re the largest workwear store in the GTA,” says owner Aadil Hashmani. “We saw that there wasn’t a store in Markham for men and women to find the best name brands in work wear, so we really think we’ll be a good fit for the area.” Other Work N Wear locations can be found at Kingston Road and St. Clair Avenue East, Danforth and Woodbine Avenues, the Stouffville Country Market and the 400 Market in Barrie. The friendly and knowledgeable associates will walk you through everything from sizing to the best brands for the job. All the staff at Work N Wear understand the needs of the trades, and
Uber was in late 2013 while in Atlanta, Georgia, covering a music festival. Upon arriving there, I was introduced to this neat little app that I could connect to my credit card and smartphone, and conveniently use to get from venue to venue without the hassle of hailing a cab in an unfamiliar city. About a year later, I heard Uber was coming to Toronto. Oh, cool, I thought. Maybe because I have grown up amidst constant disruption, I didn’t give it much thought. Today, I am a frequent Uber user, but I also take my fair share of rides in traditional taxis, as I have my entire life. After all, there are times when the Uber way isn’t
can help you find the protective equipment you need to get the job done. On top of work apparel and boots, the store also carries the essentials for working on a job site, include safety glasses, safety vests, hard hats, caution tape, traffic cones and much more. Work N Wear employees would like to thank their loyal customers in Scarborough for their support at the Scarborough North store, and they hope to continue to serve them better in the new location. For more information, like Work N Wear on Facbook, or call the store 416-267-9675.
New incinerator for Highland Creek approved East Scarborough residents finally have a sludge-disposal plan for the Highland Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant they will like. In 2011, Toronto Council overturned the opinions of city staff and residents living near the waterfront plant by voting to replace its aging incinerators with “beneficial use.” That meant trucking dried sludge from the Beechgrove Drive facility through local streets to where it could be thrown away or spread on farm fields. The trucking never hap-
pened. Angry community members appealed to the province, and the city launched a new environmental study on the plant. But a vote in council Thursday, May 5, wasn’t a repeat of 2011: this time, councillors backed the preferred option, which was fluidized bed incineration. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser, recently diagnosed with nonHodgkins lymphoma and undergoing chemotherapy on Thursday, wasn’t there for the 32-to-12 decision. But he was watching, and
later called it “decisive.” Consistently in favour of modernizing the plant’s incinerators, Moeser thought the vote would be closer, and gave credit to Mayor John Tory for speaking in favour of the incineration option. “The mayor did a terrific job. I’ve really got to applaud him for supporting the community,” Moeser said. Incineration was backed publicly by five area ratepayer groups - the Coronation, Highland Creek, Guildwood Village and West Rouge associations - and a 17,000-signature petition.

Rouge and Morningside parks identified as areas with blacklegged ticks for the bacteria in Toronto. In 2015, 32 human cases of Lyme disease were reported in the city, but most were thought to have been acquired outside Toronto. Since 2010, an average of 20 cases a year have been reported. People can reduce the risk
of getting tick bites by staying in the centre of trails in wooded areas, and wearing DEET-based insect repellents and light-coloured clothing that makes it easier to spot ticks, which can be as small as poppy seeds. After spending time outside
in areas where ticks could be, it is recommended that people check their full body and head, and those of their children and pets. Showering can also help clear ticks before they become attached. For more info, visit www. toronto.ca/health ADMIT ONE

The City of Toronto, like many other cities in the world, has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by the year 2050 to help reduce the most negative impact of climate change. Reaching this goal will require changes in the ways we live, travel, work and consume goods and services, which will in turn affect everything from the structure of our economy, to the types of jobs we hold, to our education and training programs, and more, advocates say. TransformTO is a project aimed at engaging Toronto residents and businesses in imagining the transformative changes needed to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent while improving public health, enhancing our local economy, and reducing social inequalities. Locally, environmental advocacy group Green 13 (green13toronto.org), in conjunction with Project Neutral (projectneutral.org), is organizing an event, Brainstorm for a Sustainable City, that
will take place next Tuesday at West Toronto Baptist Church, 3049 Dundas St. W., at 7 p.m. Special guests include Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, Linda Swanston from the City’s energy and environment division, and Paul Antze of Green Neighbours 21. The StoneCap Collective has announced the release of Arts Arrive, a free arts guidebook
for Toronto newcomers. Providing an overview of the Toronto arts scene, Arts Arrive is available in both physical and digital forms. Arts Arrive celebrates more than 80 Toronto-based arts organizations in the disciplines of visual arts, dance, theatre, music, literary arts and film. Featured organizations include Afrofest, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, and Gallery 44. In the interest of removing barriers that some may face when interacting with the arts, the guidebook highlights activities that are available around Toronto at low or no cost. As well as being released online, Arts Arrive will be distributed through settlement and newcomer agencies. The StoneCap Collective is a newly formed collective that aims to promote diversity and accessibility within the Toronto arts scene. LRT western tunnelling complete The Eglinton Crosstown LRT celebrated an important construction milestone this week. Metrolinx announced the completion of western tunnelling for the portion of the light rail line to run below Eglinton Avenue. Since June 2013, two massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), nicknamed Dennis and Lea, had painstakingly excavated a tunnel around 50-feet below street level from Black Creek Drive to Yonge Street. Last year, another pair of TBMs started tunnelling the Crosstown’s eastern underground portion traveling from Brentcliffe Road toward Yonge Street. Both of them are west of Bayview Avenue. gardiner closure on weekend wcomplete

When a TTC bus driver makes the news, it’s all too often for negative reasons. But Daniel Clavette at least is receiving some well-deserved praise for his recent actions. Clavette was working his regular shift Monday, May 2 when he came across a knapsack left on the 9 Bellamy bus he had been driving. Opening the bag to determine if there was any identification, he found $50,000 in cash, along with funeral papers. It turned out the owner of the bag had recently lost his mother, and the money was likely an inheritance. Clavette radioed transit
control, ensuring the bag, with the money intact, was returned to its owner. presto card at wellesley station wuse
You can now use your Presto card at Wellesley Station. The station is the 28th in the subway and RT network to receive Presto access, and the TTC is promising to have every subway station plus all buses hooked up to the tap-on fare system by the end of the year. Physical locations where you can purchase an adult Presto card are a little more elusive, but you can buy a pre-loaded card for $20 plus a $6 issuing fee from vending machines at Union, Queen’s Park and Main Street stations. Some downtown Gateway newsstands also have pre-loaded cards for sale. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transportation and infrastructure reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Federal funds for TTC will be put to good use: Tory RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of millions of dollars in new federal infrastructure funding for transit could become available within a couple of months, said Toronto’s mayor at press conference Friday morning. John Tory said the $840million in new funding for 2016, earmarked for upgrades and improvements to existing TTC service as announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, would allow the transit commission to get started on a number of essential projects, such as re-signalling the Bloor line, purchasing more buses and completing accessibility improvements at all subway stations. “It’s May now, and it’s reasonable to expect sometime before the summer is over we will have this money in hand and we will be able to put it to work,” said Tory following the announcement made by Trudeau at the TTC’s
Ontario this year – is just the start of a new federal commitment, said Trudeau. He said conversations were already taking place between all three levels of government for the next phase of funding, which would go to larger-scale individual transit projects. “The first phase is just that, an immediate injection of hundreds of millions worth of federal money that is going to ensure… upgrades or investments in our existing transit systems are made starting right now this year,” said Trudeau. “This is a start, it’s a very good start, but it’s just a start”. Currently the TTC has close to $3 billion in unfunded maintenance and repair work planned for the next 10 years, ranging in scale from immense projects like converting Bloor’s signalling system and purchasing new subway trains for the line to smaller but no less important concerns such as upgrading drainage and ventilation

This year, he suggested work could begin on Line 2 improvements and continue with shovel-ready projects such as TTC station elevator installations, which are currently unfunded. New buses could also be purchased with the federal money, he said. “We’re ready to go, we’ve done the plans. We just need to see the money and we’ll get rolling,” said Byford, who was at Greenwood for the announcement along with TTC chair Josh Colle. Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca, also spoke at the announcement.
