Crawford called the arrangements, shared with shelter residents this week, “a double win” for his ward, which contains the Residence, the inn and the motel. He said there were concerns the Residence, a privately owned former nursing home rented by the city in Birch Cliff near Birchmount Road, could

no longer meet the needs of its clients. As many as 60 men at a time over age 55, some with serious medical conditions, stay at the Residence, sent there by Seaton House or other homeless shelters in Toronto. In a statement, Crawford said moving to the Comfort Inn East, a newer building east of Bellamy Road South that could house 120 men, would provide a more comfortable environment for the shelter residents

and staff. Some in Birch Cliff opposed the shelter before it opened in 1999, but it has been welcome since, enjoying what Crawford called an “overwhelmingly positive atmosphere of mutual respect.” Though at the time he said parts of the building were in “pretty deplorable” condition, Crawford fought to keep the Residence open when it was slated for closure by the city in >>>RESIDENCE, page 21

Veteran recalls days at the frontline Albert Armstrong talks about adjusting to life when he returned home after Second World War MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com When Albert Armstrong got back from the Second World War, he couldn’t talk to most people in Toronto about what happened to him in Europe. It was 1946, and the city’s other citizens were afraid of the returned veterans. “Nobody would dare in Canada to ask you what it was like,” he said. Men who fought the Second World War would end up at the New Edwin Hotel on Queen Street, where beer was 10 cents a glass, and talked among themselves, “the only ones who knew or cared.” Some had post-traumatic stress – battlefield fatigue, they called it then – but nobody gave a damn, said Armstrong, who lives in Scarborough’s Bendale neighbourhood. He later married and raised a family, putting the war “away” for a long time, but he couldn’t tell his children or his late wife much about it either. MEMORIES RETURN At times, it seemed like his seven months of frontline service in France, Belgium and Holland was all a bad dream, but in retirement the names, dates, and places returned. “I hit 90 a few weeks ago. Lots of times I can’t remember what I had for breakfast, but this stuff keeps coming back,” Armstrong said last week. “When you get too much time on your hands, a lot comes back to you.”

He was still 18 when he came ashore shortly after D-Day at the French coastal town of Dieppe, where a Canadian raid two years earlier ended with heavy losses and men captured by the Germans, including Armstrong’s future brotherin-law. The occupiers had left the discarded Canadian rifles, helmets and landing craft on the beach – as an object lesson, Armstrong said. “We had to go ’round them to get in there,” he said. “You’d swear the raid happened only a week (earlier).” Trained on armoured vehicles, Armstrong was sent in as a reinforcement and given a rifle after the landing force got “beat to a pulp.” It was different than training in Canada, and different from training in England, where discipline was strict and 10 per cent of the men became casualties. The “old men” of 24 or 25 told Armstrong he knew nothing. Officers didn’t care how he dressed or whether he shaved. “I want results,” Armstrong remembered a captain telling him, “and don’t try lying to me.” Armstrong was assigned to reconnaisance with the 14th Canadian Hussars, Saskatchewan Regiment, riding in a half-track to find out where the retreating Germans were. He spent the rest of the war in a British military hospital, where he was forced to work as an orderly. Things he saw there – men whose faces had been blasted by a mortar shell, or who were in a permanent state of shock – made him wish he could go back to the front. ‘HARDEST TIME OF MY LIFE’

it,” one of the older soldiers told Armstrong. “ What happened yesterday didn’t happen. Put it out of your mind.” His unit crossed from Belgium into Holland, and suddenly the war seemed to get more serious. Armstrong had never seen starving children before, but “what looked like two skeletons come up to us.” The Germans had taken everything from the Dutch, leaving families nearly dead from hunger, Armstrong said. “It stopped us cold.” Canadians fought for months to clear the Sheldt River estuary so the Allies could use the port of Antwerp. German troops in every place “put up one hell of a fight,”

urged on by SS men who were “nutcases,” Armstrong said. “I never seen them back up or quit en masse.” He did a lot of riding on Holland’s dykes, where a German gunner would hit the first and then the last vehicles in line, “so he had you boxed in.” Reconnaisance in the narrow streets of towns and villages was worse. You’d see a gun barrel coming around a corner, and it could be an 88 mm anti-tank gun, Armstrong said. “We had nothing that would stop an ’88.’” A corporal who had refused promotion to sergeant more than once, he was finally taken off the line in February 1945, four days after the Allied assault on the Rhine River began with a bombard-

After a year, Armstrong returned to the East Danforth area where he grew up, and got his old job back at Loblaws, though it was the “hardest time of my life, trying to get used to working again.” Later, he was a store manager, and then a union representative. He went back to see Holland three times, and to Germany once. Armstrong has been a member of Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years, involved in most activities at the Highland Creek branch, as his way of giving a little back. He has gone to local schools to speak to students. He tells them about the insanity of war, that “there are no winners.” Armstrong’s family has served in Canada’s military more than most: his four brothers were also in the army during the Second World War, and his father was wounded at Vimy Ridge in the First World War. He now has a grandson who is in the Canadian reserves, the 48th Highlanders, and loves it. “I just hope to God he never has to go.”

A reading of the taxation tea leaves

ou can read a lot of different things in the tea leaves after a big election and there’s lots of readings a fortune teller can pull from this last one. For instance, one might say the election of Justin Trudeau as prime minister represents a generational shift, not just in Ottawa, but in the electorate. Young, inexperienced and optimistic Justin Trudeau came into power despite old, battle-scarred and pessimistic Stephen Harper’s best efforts, and it’s hard not to imagine a group of voters born in the 1990s reacting badly to messaging that someone who at least looks about their age is “just not ready.” Millennials, after all, have heard the same thing repeated ad nauseam since they were in short pants by their entitled elders. Millennials, like the

david nickle the city rest of us, have heard a lot of other things repeated. They’ve heard that government deficits are a cardinal sin, that taxes are best kept low and that government itself is best kept small and relatively inactive. Based on last month’s federal election and the last few elections in which younger voters have been able to have their say, it’s seeming as though those notions are getting just as chilly a reception as that “not ready” attack ad. Although a conservative himself, Toronto Mayor John Tory was a beneficiary of this post-boom bump, and in his early months, governed in that knowledge, boosting existing services and promising new ones – actively reengaging city government

in city life. But as a conservative, Tory, along with many of his council colleagues, are showing oldee timee reluctance to square the circle – to do the things that in the past have been understood as politically unpopular: raise property taxes higher than the rate of inflation, consider new ways to bring in revenue such as road tolls… to increase revenue, in other words, to match aspiration. Very soon, Tory and his supporters on council are going to find a need to do this. Just one of Tory’s enhancements – a return to higher levels of TTC service to undo the transit cuts made in the Rob Ford years – will cost an additional $90 million to fund, fully rolled-out in 2016. An inflationary property tax increase (the maximum that Tory has promised) will raise $50 million.

If that were the only pressure it would be bad enough, but of course it’s not alone. The Toronto Police Service will be costing the city more, and another promise, the mayor’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, is rendered meaningless if there is not significant spending in social services added to the 2016 budget. Taxpayers will also soon have to begin paying for the loan the city made out to itself, to help balance the otherwise askew 2015 budget. Would Toronto taxpayers and voters be willing to look at paying more for better services and a more cohesive city? The tea leaves, imperfect an indicator as they are, suggest they might just.

Hospital hosts hiring fair for nurses A hospital in Scarborough and West Durham says it is about to hire more than 50 nurses. nderneath Scarborough lies a secret past that helped end the Second World War. Hidden underground, more than four kilometres of tunnels sit forgotten, abandoned pieces of GECO, General Engineering Company (Canada) Limited, a munitions plant. The plant produced more than 256 million munitions for the Allied Forces, thanks to more than 21,000 workers, mostly women, who came from throughout Toronto and across Canada to join the fight against Nazi Germany. With Britain’s munitions factories under siege and Canada’s men at war, it was up to Canada’s Bomb Girls to make sure the Allies had the weapons they needed to win the war. The $7 million plant opened in 1941 on almost 350 acres of expropriated land. In just five months, more than 170 buildings were built on the site, along with the tunnel system. As well as workshops, there were administration and service buildings, including a bank, cafeteria, fire hall, medical centre, power station and more. All ammo that left the plant was marked with Sc/C, for Scarborough, Canada, a mark of quality recognized by Allied and enemy forces alike. Scarborough resident Barbara Dickson’s new book Bomb Girls: Trading Aprons for Ammo explores GECO’s history. “I’ve lived in Scarborough my entire life, and I didn’t know that the plant existed,” Dickson said. “I wanted

to learn more, to understand the magnitude of the effort that these women had made to the war effort, and there was no book, and I felt a loss. I felt sad for Scarborough and for Canada that we had not recorded this history.” So she decided to record it herself. The plant sat between Eglinton Avenue and what is now Hymus Road, and Bi rc h m o u n t Ro a d a n d Warden Avenue, then spelled Wardin. More than 20 of its buildings are still there, used by commercial and industrial businesses. The intricate tunnel network heads southeast from Eglinton and Warden. It housed GECO’s electricity, water, steam and compressed air lines, along with transformer vaults and switch rooms.

Placing infrastructure underground ensured workshop explosions wouldn’t affect the plant’s ability to keep operating, which it did around-the-clock six days a week. The tunnels can still be accessed from some of the plant’s remaining buildings, but have been blocked at property lines. Businesses where access to the tunnels has not been sealed off generally use them as storage space, noted Dickson. “Hardly anybody knows about them,” she said. “Some have been filled in, some have become dilapidated over the decades. It’s amazing, it’s been

70 years and some of these tunnels are still pristine when you walk through them, others though, have collapsed.” The plant was top-secret, to safeguard it from German threats. Workers, who had to be British subjects, were screened by the RCMP, fingerprinted, photographed and sworn to secrecy. Each risked their lives working with high explosives and gunpowder. Luckily, there were no fatal explosions at GECO. The women who worked at the plant, and others like it, not only helped win the Second World War, but also redefined women’s societal place and value. At the time, they were unaware of how much they were advancing women’s rights. “Without any hope of recognition, they just did what they needed to do to get their men home, at a time when, mostly, women didn’t work outside the home,” said Dickson. “They could see that they could contribute. It was a catalyst to empower women to feel that they had opportunities, they didn’t have to settle for the status quo.”

The workers were immortalized on screen by Bomb Girls, a Global Television series that ran from 2012 to 2014. The show, which centred around the fictional Victory Munitions factory, was based on GECO and nearby Defence Industries Limited, a munitions plant in what is now Ajax. Before GECO, Scarborough was a relatively rural area with few defined communities. After, it exploded with growth. Many plant workers chose to stay in the area following the war. Parts of the plant were converted to post-war emergency housing, bringing more people to the area. To serve them, schools and stores opened on the GECO grounds, along with a church

and police station. Families called the housing complex home for nine years, before it began transitioning to other uses. Municipal offices, a council chamber and public library opened there, alongside businesses, attracting even more people. “GECO was the catalyst to Scarborough,” Dickson explained. “The cheap land and low taxes of that area of Scarborough brought in new industry... All these businesses were coming in along Eglinton Avenue and it was the start of The Golden Mile.” Named after The Golden Mile in London, England, it was one of Canada’s first industrial centres. It was so impressive that Queen Elizabeth II came to see it in 1959.

A young child is recovering after being struck by a vehicle in Scarborough Tuesday. Police said a vehicle hit the three-year-old, who was in a stroller, on Kennedy Road at Cowdray Court (south of Sheppard Avenue) at 3:30 p.m. The child was taken by ambulance to the Hospital for Sick Children via an emergency run. “The child was later found to have received minor inju-

ries, including a cut to their head,” Toronto police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said. The youngster was one three kids struck by vehicles over the past few days in Scarborough. Two boys suffered serious injuries after they were struck by vans. At 3:09 p.m. Oct. 30, a 12-year-old boy crossing Lawrence Avenue at Scarborough Gold Club Road

was struck by an eastbound 2015 Chevrolet van driven by a 43-year-old man. The boy was taken to hospital in critical condition. At 4:40 p.m. Saturday, a westbound 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by a 69-yearold man hit a 14-year-old boy while he was crossing Sheppard Avenue west of Massie Street. He too was taken to hospital in critical condition.

When Scarborough artist Martine Simard attends the exhibitions where her paintings are displayed, it’s not the awards or the accolades she loves, but interacting with the people. “I love to have contact with people, because when you paint you are alone and

everyone is missing that part, and that part is magical, the painting evolving and suddenly it happens, which is so magical,” she said. Simard is one of the 85 artists who will be displaying 400 pieces of original artwork this weekend at the Art Guild of Scarborough’s annual Fall Show and Sale in Scarborough. Scarborough (AGS) and fellow member, Garry Herridge, who will also be displaying some of his paintings, said their people meeting and interacting with others over art is truly what their spring and fall exhibitions are all about. “The AGS is a group of artists who live in the community and who create their art in the community, and the people who come to the show

Joys of the weekend hockey tourney I’m heading off to Rochester this weekend with my daughter’s Scarborough hockey team for a tournament. Anyone who has their kids in hockey, or other team sports, knows the dreaded tournaments can mean plenty of Fridays off work, and that can be a problem for those of us with limited vacation time. I mean, you add up the number of kids you have times four or five tournaments per year, and you can eat into your vacation allotment pretty quickly with Fridays off for the pursuit of our national sport (or co-national sport along with lacrosse – look it up). Another problem with weekend tournaments is food and drink. Where to get them, the cost, is it good, etc. You can usually count on eating at odd times, at various greasy or otherwise unseemly restaurants. A team meal will eat up two hours of your life you may want back

Inevitably someone leaves unhappy with their meal, as having a team of 17 screaming girls or boys and assorted family members seems to put an undue strain on otherwise reasonable mid-range chain restaurants. One of the great things with American tournaments, though, is the booze. We all know alcohol in general is much cheaper in the U.S., but if you want to go real big, the deals are even better. Seems to me they have 95-pack cans of beer on sale for $20 or a big two-gallon jug of liquor for $25. Even with the exchange, that sounds like a good deal to me. Supersize me! With all this eating and drinking, watch out for the dad or mom who wants to stay up to the wee hours,

especially if it is in your room. Nothing good happens after 11 p.m. on these weekends, and inevitably the evil tournament schedulers have you up at the crack of dawn travelling to some freezing, outdated rink not near a coffee shop. By the time Sunday morning comes, either your team is in the playoff round, or has been mercifully eliminated, which may allow a much needed sleepin for both parent and overtired kid. More likely kid and over-tired parent. Making the final game comes with a cost – staying late Sunday with a long drive back home. See earlier remark about merciful elimination. CFUW Scarborough fosters local education ali raza scm@insidetoronto.com Education is a “huge open door” for women, says Janet Holt, of the Scarborough branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women’s Club. The club, which was founded in 1960 and today has a membership of 64 Scarborough women, it aims to continue its communitybased work to improve the status and human rights of women and children and ensure that girls and women have equal opportunities to education. “I realized one of the most important aspects of my life has been the fact that I was able to receive an education, specifically a university education,” Holt said. The Scarborough branch is part of 112 clubs across Canada that fall under the Canadian Federation of University Women. There are 50 clubs in Ontario, with the original founded in 1919 for degree-holding women. Membership today no longer requires that women hold degrees, as it’s open to any women who support the goals of the club. “We are finding younger women are very busy with their lives,” Holt said. “We are very interested in encouraging women to

join our organization. Wexford Blast win Woodbridge Classic The Wexford Blast U13 boys soccer team wrapped up their season by taking the Woodbridge Classic tournament championship title recently. The Wexford boys went undefeated through the tourney to win the prestigious tournament.

In the championship match, Wexford beat Erin Mills Academy 2-0. The Blast won two and tied one game in the preliminary round. Wexford beat Mississauga Croatia 5-1, and the Stouffville Mustangs 6-1. Wexford and the York Jets then tied 1-1 to wrap up the

preliminary round, which Wexford won to qualify for the semifinals. That semifinal game went to a shootout against Epic FC after ending 0-0 in regulation time. Wexford came out on top in the shootout to win 1-0 and qualify for the championship game.

At last all’s done, they’re ready to go, The flare’s light up, row by row, The scream of motors fills the night “Listen to her purr, she sounds all right.” Buddy Dick was born in Toronto to Eastern European Jewish parents who had immigrated for a better life. When he enlisted, he was attending Vaughan Road Collegiate. He was stationed in England. He travelled across Europe after the worst of D-Day was over, serving as the driver for a captain who was gathering information for war crimes trials. After his return he settled back in Toronto, married Irene List (their Jewish mothers arranged their first meeting) and went on to have five children. He started a successful insurance business and loved to travel. He was an exceptional amateur photographer, loved tennis and jazz, and made outstanding dill pickles.

Soldier recalls friendships made, not horrors of war BY ELLEN COREY-SAMLAL

rving Banfield Corey (1892-1976) was born in Kingscroft, Quebec on a farm. In his teens, he took a business course and worked in a number of different places. By the time the First World War started he was working for one of the banks that existed then. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and late that year, was sent overseas. In early 1918 he joined the Canadian Air Force, which had just been created, as an observer.

He kept a diary, which was mostly about his friends and the things they did when they had spare time. This is what he wrote on Nov. 11, 1918: “...deserted at dinner but the few present made enough noise to offset the lack of numbers.” He came back to Canada in 1919 and lived a very ordinary life. When he talked about the war to me, he didn’t dwell on the horrors, but on the friendships he made.

ll three soldiers pictured here lived in Toronto. All survived their military service. Pte. Martin O’Keeffe, my husband’s uncle, was originally from Dundee, Scotland. He lied about his age in order to enlist. Jack Cartledge was my husband’s father. He apparently trained with the R.C.E. but was transferred to the Irish Regiment when he got overseas. He served in Italy, Germany and ended up in Holland where he stayed with a nice family awaiting his return home after the war, probably reading issues of the Green Bonnet. He arrived home Christmas Day 1946. Pte. William Baker is my father, originally from Northwich, England. At the Dieppe Raid, he was picked up in the freezing water and consequently suffered health problems for the rest of his life. We were given these pictures by our mothers and we cherish them. We also have medals, Martin’s dog tags and Jack’s kit bag.

fter an unsuccessful attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz in Norway’s Kaa Fjord by our Fleet Air Arm fighterbombers on April 3, 1944, all planes but two had returned to the safety of the Emperor (aircraft carrier) just before the weather suddenly changed for the worst and we started rolling and pitching, causing planes to break their moorings. There was so much confusion on deck that my good friend, and fighter pilot, John Brine of Cornwall, England, who was still flying protective cover for the ship, was told to remain airborne until some planes were safely lowered to the hanger deck. By the time the upper deck was clear, the seas had become mountainous, and even down in the engine room, where there was normally less motion, we were holding onto stanchions and railings to avoid falling. John was signalled to land but, just as his fighter came over the stern, the ship pitched, the bow went down, the stern came up, and his plane’s arrester hook

caught the end of the deck instead of the arrestor wire. The hook was wrenched from its socket and the plane flipped over upside down. John sustained a fractured skull and died the next day. We buried him at sea, and that in itself was a nightmare since it was almost impossible to stand, with the ship rolling and pitching. We continued to roll a steady 30 degrees, which is very dangerous, and twice we did 45 degrees, which is usually fatal. Eating and sleeping were practically impossible, crockery was smashed. Planes were wrecked, so we turned into the wind to alleviate our problem. The waves had to be 50-feet high. Our nightmare continued for six more days before the seas and winds abated and we could sail back to our base at Scapa Flow in Northern Scotland. I learned later that we had been given up for lost, and for some years after the war, I had nightmares about being on a ship that turned upside down, but the only one to do that was the Battleship Tirpitz a few months later.

A wartime romance blooms

t was 1944 and while bombs were dropping during the Second World War, a springtime romance was blooming in London, England. It was between Thomas, a brave young 19-yearold Canadian soldier of the North Shore Regiment from Campbellton, New Brunswick, ready to be shipped out to fight on the Normandy beaches in June, and Freda, a strong-willed young au pair girl from Leipzig, Germany, stranded in England and interned for three years on the Isle of Anglesey Wales, by the act of formal Declaration of War between Great Britain and Germany in September 1939. They saw each other for a few short months before being separated by battle. The regiment landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Freda passed away 15 years ago in 2000, still in London, England. Thomas still remains a mystery. Their loving son, born New Year’s Eve 1944, now resides in Toronto. – name witheld by request

Freda, an au pair girl from Germany, met Canadian solider Thomas while both were in England. The couple embarked on a whirlwind romance. Thomas was eventually shipped out and Freda was left pregnant. The pair never reunited and Thomas never learned he had a son.

have become the family archivist through a series of circumstances and, I must admit, a certain inclination on my own part. It is often a very emotional experience that captures one’s heart and will not let go easily; however, it is also a poignant and touching experience that enlightens and brings joy along with the tears. Many years ago, following the death of my paternal grandmother, my family was going through her home. My father, sister and brothers, aunt and cousins were all sifting through the remnants of hers and my grandfather’s life, hoping to discover a treasure before someone else. What captured my attention was a box of old photographs. Following a few cursory glances from the others, I was left alone with the box as they continued on their search for things more valuable. And I indeed was left with a treasure. Within the box was this old photo of a soldier. I had seen a lot of those kinds of photos before as my father was a Second World

War veteran. But this was different; the uniform was simpler than my dad’s and the young man was not wearing or holding a hat in his picture, the way my dad always had. I turned it over and saw that it was actually a postcard with writing on it. It reads: Dear Friend Just thought I’d send you this post to show you how I feel. I hope everybody down there in the old burg called Galt is feeling well. I certainly am for this is the life for me. How is all the rest down there, dad, mother, and dear old Mary, and little Dutch Charlie. Jim and John, tell Charlie to bring in the cows at 5 o’clock. Must close now Yours Truly H. At the top of the postcard in red ink, in contrast to the black of the original, was written: Died of pneumonia in France 1917.

I have kept this postcard all of these years. My grandmother died in 1972, my grandfather a few months later. I still, to this day, do not know who H. Simon was or what his relationship was to my grandmother. I do know that my grandfather had a sister named Mary and brothers named Jim and John. His reference to Galt (now Cambridge, Ontario) is where they all lived. Regardless of this, I am honoured to have shared the life of this brave Canadian soldier, H. Simon.
