Area MPs host meeting on services for refugees

ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com Three Liberal MPs are holding a roundtable discussion with the community regarding refugees and social services Saturday at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The discussion comes as a reaction to Conservative government’s Bill C-858, which seeks to make major changes to social assistance for refugee claimants.

Bill introduced in April Scarborough-Guildwood MP John McKay, MarkhamUnionville MP John McCallum and Scarborough-Agincourt MP Arnold Chan will host the roundtable discussion to hear what residents have to say about the bill that was introduced in April of this year. “They (Conservatives) want to deny refugee claimants health services and social services,” McKay said. “They want to emphasize that it’s failed, but don’t describe how it’s failed.” McKay stressed the bill is a major issue in Scarborough as it is home to many refugee claimants. Attending annual Remembrance Day ceremonies is “just something we do normally,” Beese said. A crowd of more than 200 people with poppies on their lapels gathered around the Scarborough Cenotaph for the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day service on Tuesday morning. From the youngest child to the oldest veteran, it was a moment of solidarity and unity for Scarborough as several men, women and children paid their respects to those who sacrificed and those who still sacrifice for country and community. The service began with a call to order by Legion Zone D5 Commander Joyce Geddes followed by a March on the Colours by Sgt.-at-Arms Chin Tam. Officers of Toronto police’s 41 Division were present to provide security and to pay respects. When the Last Post started, many in the crowd saluted. It was followed two minutes of solemn silence, where nothing, not even the cars and people on the street, made a sound. Saluting veterans were reminded of their past

Public School recited the poem In Flanders Fields while other Cliffside students stood eager to place their wreath near the cenotaph. Karen Tanouye, wife of Supt. John Tanouye of 41 Division, was with her young granddaughter. She stressed that “it’s important for them (children) to learn about why our country remembers every year.” “Right from day one, she has her poppy and knows what Remembrance Day is all about,” Tanouye said. “We’ll always remember, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the soldiers. We live in a great country because of them.” The ceremony culminated with wreaths being laid at the base of the cenotaph. Representatives from the Government of Canada, Veterans Affairs, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, various branches of the Royal Canadian Legion and many community groups all placed their wreaths under Scarborough’s Cenotaph.

Effect change by capitalizing on shared experiences, resources

W

e’ve said it before, that if you’re unsatisfied with something or desire change in this city, you need to speak up about it. But better than that, the best way to effect change is to do it with a united front. There’s strength in numbers, but also strength in shared experiences and resources. This week we’ve seen great examples of that in stories we’ve covered. In Etobicoke, Glen Agar residents, concerned about the intensification of development in their neighbourhood, banded together and formed a new ratepayer’s association. “We must have a say in the decisions that affect our neighbourhood,” reads their mandate. “No politician or city staffer has a more vested interest in how our community is growing and our view shaping than each and everyone of us.” Work together On Monday evening, a group called WSIC (Why Should I Care?) to create based out of North York held a forum on transit and urban planchange ning. Motivated by the desire to engage and inform, the group hosts public meetings like this to spur discussion and show citizens why municipal affairs matter to them. In Parkdale, the Ossington BIA recently became official, choosing its first board members. The BIA formed after business owners saw a need to manage the transformation of the Ossington strip and mitigate relations with residents and area developers. And in another show of productive collaboration, transit advocacy groups and the airport worker’s union rallied together in order to push for affordable fares on the upcoming Union-Pearson air rail link. In forming the Our Union Pearson Coalition, the group offers one collective point of view, backed by the voices and experience of thousands. Where groups can learn from each other, share best practices and experiences is where issues will be most effectively resolved. Discover who shares that common interest or has an investment in your area and bring everyone to the table to make the most impact. BIAs can assist resident associations. Issue-related advocacy groups may find a wealth of resources in grassroots community groups. Politicians, school board trustees, police liaison committees – there’s no shortage of people to turn to, when you’re looking to strengthen your cause. Find our stories on these collaborations at www. insidetoronto.com

Santa Claus ready for his Sunday visit In case you missed the exciting news, Santa Claus is coming to town this Sunday. Yes, THE Santa Claus, Jolly Old St. Nick, himself. He’ll arrive at precisely 12:30 p.m. so synchronize your watches. Unless, you have a Smartwatch. It will glare at you if you try and then scornfully remind you that’s it quite capable of synchronizing itself. Santa won’t be sliding down any chimneys during his visit so you don’t have to clean the chute, leave out any milk and cookies, hang out any stockings, have Twas the night before Christmas open on the table, or rehearse any carols. It’s not that kind of trip. It’s strictly a meet and greet. A special celebration of the lovable big guy with the trademark fluffy white beard and signature red and white outfit. He’s dropping by for the annual parade in his honour, the 110th one to be exact, a tradition that began way back in 1905.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY (At this point my friend Jennifer will ask if I went to that first one and then let out an enormous “Ho, ho, ho.” After which her Smartwatch will remind her that it’s quite capable of doing that itself, too. That it gets the laughs, not her.) The inaugural Santa Claus parade was the brainchild of the Eaton family, owners of Eaton’s department store. It literally was just Santa who came to town for numero uno. There was no Mrs. Claus with him. No elves. No Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner or Blitzen. Not even Rudolph. What’s more, the first parade was said to be more leisurely walk than parade. Santa took the train all by his lonesome from the North Pole to Union Station. Eat your heart out SmartTrack – and SmartTrack’s Smartwatch.

When he arrived, Santa was greeted by a few Eaton family members who escorted him up Yonge Street to their downtown department store, while awestruck kids on either side of the street looked in amazement as the venerable bearded one strolled along. His first visit was so well-received, footmen and trumpeters were added the following year, a horsedrawn carriage in year three and by 1953 he arrived on a fully mechanized float. Fast forward to 2014 – if you’re following this in your time machine, that is. If you’re just reading it, take all the time you need get to 2014. Anyhow, as we get ready for the 110th edition, there are multiple sponsors now and Santa will be greeted by 31 floats, 21 bands, oodles of celebrity clowns, more than 3,000 volunteers, an audience of hundreds of thousands lining the 5.6-kilometre route, network TV coverage and exposure

on all the other platforms available. In addition, a fivekilometre Holly Jolly Fun Run along the same route is now part of the festivities and a Santa Cam on Santa’s float will be taking photos for posterity. When posterity is done looking at them – and posterity’s Smartwatch is done looking at them – anybody else can look at them, too. Lastly, Santa, circa 1905 was known for his lap, Santa circa 2014 will be known for his app, which you can use to track him along the route. What will it all look like in another 110 years? I’ll let you know when I write that column. For now, I’m focused on this year’s parade and I’ve got to get a move on if I want to get my usual spot on Bloor to catch all the action. Tory must speak firmly to feds on transit During the election campaign, John Tory repeatedly said he would “shame” other levels of government into paying for big-ticket items beyond the scope of the property tax base. Specifically, things like housing and transit. Just a few weeks following the election, mayor-elect Tory seems to be waffling. When asked Monday whether he would turn transit into an election issue in the looming federal election, Tory chuckled. After having finished a municipal election, he joked, “The last thought I have is getting involved in another one.” It’s disappointing. Tory, with his Rolodex full of contacts and relationships, might be the city’s most effective advocate when dealing with other levels of government. Surely the best time to bring that advocacy to a government is as it heads into an election and therefore has the most at stake. That Tory seems unwilling to do so is puzzling. A benign explanation might be that he simply doesn’t

david nickle the city wish to be seen following the Toronto Transit Commission’s union leadership, who made the call earlier Monday as it released a report indicating the poverty of our transit system and the need for federal and provincial investment. But the theory advanced by failed candidate Doug Ford – that Tory’s relationships are as much a constraint as they are an advantage – is another explanation. Tory’s candidacy was endorsed by sitting politicians of both Liberal and Conservative persuasion. Taking a firm stance in the context of an election involving the careers of those politicians, after they’d been so kind... well, it’s just bad manners. Hopefully Tory’s reticence to bring up awkward truths with old friends, particularly in concert with natural opponents like the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, is a temporary thing. Because it is

going to take some hard talk to engage the current federal government on municipal issues to any degree. Left to his own devices, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is more likely to fight the coming election on tax policy and the country’s military adventure against ISIS. Municipal matters are outside of the federal government’s wheelhouse as a rule, and they’ll stay that way unless municipalities make noise. That noise need not be confrontational. Former mayor David Miller negotiated significant improvements in financing and governance with both former premier Dalton McGuinty and former prime minister Paul Martin. Miller was polite but not silent. Tory needs to find his own voice, speaking firmly about Toronto’s unmet needs, and assigning responsibility for the fulfillment of those needs correctly, with the governments who have the greatest capacity to raise and disperse funds.

Local letter carrier honoured for helping injured woman ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com

Photo/COURTESY

Scarborough Southwest MP Dan Harris, left, presents Chris Bostinis with a citation during a Canadian Union of Postal Workers event Saturday. Bostinis, a letter carrier, was honoured for his actions helping a woman trapped in her home with a broken leg.

A Canada Post letter carrier was honoured for saving a senior woman’s life at a regional meeting of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW ) Saturday in Scarborough. Chris Botsinis was working his route March 31 when he came across a house where an elderly woman had fallen two days prior and was unable to get up or call for help. He immediately called 911 and stayed with the woman until first responders arrived. The woman suffered a broken leg but recovered. Botsinis was honoured by Scarborough Southwest MP Dan Harris, as the woman is a constituent of Harris’ riding. “I am honoured to be recognized, but really I just did what anyone would do,”

Luckily, as a letter carrier I go by the homes on my route each and every day and if I see something amiss, I am there to alert the proper authorities. – Chris Botsinis

Botsinis said after receiving a certificate of achievement from Harris. Eyes in community “Luckily, as a letter carrier I go by the homes on my route each and every day and if I see something amiss, I am there to alert the proper authorities.” “I’m just glad I was able to be there to help,” he added. A crowd of 250 CUPW representatives gave him enthusiastic applause. The incident was cited as a major reason to continue home mail delivery by CUPW National Director for Ontario Gerry Deveau.

“It’s not unusual for our employees to act as the eyes and ears of their communities while out delivering mail,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons so many people are upset about the decision to put an end to home mail delivery.” Last year, Canada Post announced it would cease home mail delivery in favour of community mailboxes. But the agency’s decision has yielded some opposition. Harris was presented with a petition with 6000 names of citizens protesting the cuts to door-to-door delivery.

Police investigate after a 42-year-old female pedestrian was fatally struck at the corner of Midland Avenue and Gilder Drive, just north of Eglinton Avenue, last Thursday.

Witnesses sought in crash that killed woman, 42 ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

A 42-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a minivan that left the roadway on Midland Avenue last Thursday. The collision happened at Midland and Gilder Drive, one block north of Eglinton Avenue, at 12:55 p.m. Nov. 6. Construction worker Sinan Yukselir witnessed the accident and rushed to help the pedestrian, who died in his arms. “The light was turning yellow to red,” he said, noting

the northbound van went onto the sidewalk, hit a traffic signal pole and then hit the pedestrian. The pole slammed to the ground. Yukselir said the pedestrian was thrown eight to 10 feet and was bleeding from the ear, mouth and nose. He said the woman had her “purse around her neck” so he took out his construction knife and cut the purse’s strap. “She died in my arms,” he added. “I feel sorry for that person. I know she’s in heaven.” Paramedics pronounced

the pedestrian dead at the scene. The driver, a 33-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. “We do know that that vehicle left the roadway for some reason,” Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said at the scene. “Now we have to determine what that reason was. Was it mechanical? Was it some outside influence?” Stibbe said some witnesses have come forward, but others are still being sought. He asked others with information to call traffic services at 416-808-1900.

Pedestrian safety campaign extended Police from Scarborough’s 41 Division are extending a pedestrian safety campaign. The city-wide Step Up and Be Safe initiative ran from Nov. 3 to 9, but it will continue in 41 Division until Nov. 30. “All officers from 41 Division will pay particular attention to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit offences in the vicinity of pedestrian crossovers, crosswalks, intersections, school zones and crossing areas frequented by seniors,”

police said in a news release Tuesday. “Officers will also be concentrating on distracted drivers, speeding, red-light, stop-sign and other offences, and officers will also continue designated RIDE spot checks.” The city offers the following tips for pedestrians: • wait for vehicles to stop before crossing in front of them; • keep aware of traffic until you safely reach the other side; • cross at traffic lights,

crosswalks and stop signs; • walk, don’t run, across intersections; • only cross when you have enough time to safely do so; • at pedestrian crossovers, push the button to activate the flashing yellow light and point to indicate your intention to cross. Fully operational streetlights are also very important as many people are wearing darker clothes.

to ever make one’s living writing plays that’s what I would do. Two years ago, Scarborough Theatre Guild (STG) staged Jennings’ second play, the murder mystery No Traveller Returns. It was so well-received, Julie McLaughlin, who directed the show and is also directing Death in a Black Suit, asked Jennings if she had any other plays. Jennings remembered a script she had written a decade earlier that had never been published. She dusted it off, reworked it and decided that Scarborough and STG would be the place for its world debut. “It’s going to be exciting for me because I’ve never seen it on its feet, Jennings said. “I really support amateur the-

I really support amateur theatre...if you give it a chance to be produced, you never know where it could go. – Maureen Jennings

atre...if you give it a chance to be produced, you never know where it could go. McLaughlin, another fan of detective fiction with favourites including hard-boiled private eyes like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, was also a fan of Jennings books, and once she heard she was also a playwright, spearheaded the effort to stage No Traveller Returns. McLaughlin said STG is thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to debut Death in a Black Suit, and said she’s a fan of Jennings both as a writer and as a person, and hopes to do the story justice.

“I certainly want Maureen, who I respect very highly, to be pleased with our work, and I want the audience to be pleased and I want the actors to be pleased with the work we do together, McLaughlin said. Jennings loves writing murder mysteries and she became a fan of the genre after discovering Sherlock Holmes as a child, as well as the Golden Age British mystery authors. Death in a Black Suit is based on a typical murder mystery scenario: people stuck somewhere where they can’t leave and murders take place. Agatha Christie tradition Set in modern day on an island in Georgian Bay, ON., a group of six actors gather at their director’s cottage to rehearse an upcoming play. But a freak snowstorm means they are stuck there, and it isn’t long before a murder takes place. “It’s a murder mystery in the

tradition of Agatha Christie and the English country house murders, McLaughlin said. Interestingly, Jennings said this story was inspired by an actual incident when she was stranded somewhere because of a snow storm. McLaughlin had a similar experience in 2012. Both Jennings and McLaughlin said they hope the audience enjoys following and gathering the clues throughout the show, and trying to guess “whodunit. “The audience gets to put clues together and guess along with them (the actors) who the murderer is, McLaughlin said. “However, we hope the audience doesn’t get it too soon because we want to engage them until the end. The premiere of Death in a Black Suit is on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Tickets are $20.

Robbie tournament inducted into Language program run by volunteers Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame The Scarborough-based soccer charity, The Robbie Tournament, was inducted as an “organization of distinction” into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame last Sunday. The induction ceremony took place at the Chateau Le Jardin Conference and Event Venue in Vaughan, ON. The Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, which is operated by the Ontario Soccer Assocation. Known to the community as The Robbie, the tournament has run every year since 1967 and has to date donated $1.6 million to many charities, primarily Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Teams from across Canada and around the world have participated in the tournament including a number of pro players. National team players Dwayne De Rosario and Diana Matheson participated in the tournament in their formative years. In 2017, The Robbie will celebrate its 50th year, giving it the status of being the longest and largest charity soccer tournament in the world. For more information about the Hall of Fame induction, visit www.thesoccerhalloffame.ca/en-us/ Police toy drive wPolice have launched their

annual holiday toy drive, which supports about 3,000

Scarborough youth. The initiative, run by auxiliary officers, kicked off Saturday morning at the 42 Division station. The toy drive has been held annually for 20 years. Police said they are seeking toy donations, especially for those between the ages of 10 and 14. drop off Unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the following locations: • 41 Division, 2222 Eglinton Ave. E. • 42 Division, 242 Milner Ave. • 43 Division, 4331 Lawrence Ave. E.

>>>from page 1 tion, overhead and materials.” The program follows TDSB-style semesters from September to January and February to June. Lessons run from Monday to Thursday in the mornings with five classes each day. With 14 volunteers teaching English to a number of diverse immigrants, Agincourt CELP is looking for supply teachers to step in when other volunteers are

unable to attend. “Currently, we’re looking for one or two teachers to step into the shoes of volunteers that are incapacitated right now,” Willis said. With the help of volunteers from various backgrounds, including higher levels of management, Willis said the idea is to teach newcomers the language skills they need to become employable and settled in the workforce. All students are mature,

with ages ranging from 25 to 80. Agincourt CELP is not funded by any organization and remains a volunteer-run program. Volunteers must be fluent in spoken and written English and commit to one or two mornings each week. Agincourt CELP is run at Knox Presbyerian Church at 4156 Sheppard Ave. E.

OUTSTRETCHED ARMS: A Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate runner attempts to evade a tackle by a Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate defender during high school football quarterfinal action Friday afternoon. Laurier, 1-3 in the regular season, pulled off the upset 14-0 win over crosstown rival Macdonald (3-1). Laurier is slated to face Etobicoke Collegiate (2-2) in a semifinal game today (Thursday), 3 p.m. at Esther Shiner Stadium.

City titles for Scarborough schools It’s crunch time for fall high school sports and Scarborough schools are right in the mix. In the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the boys volleyball and girls basketball championships were held on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, with Scarborough schools nabbing a couple of titles. GIRLS BASKETBALL Stephen Leacock Collegiate earned Scarborough’s lone TDSB hoops title in the AA championship game, defeating Runnymede Collegiate 40-26 to cap an undefeated season at the city level. Leacock now advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial championship Nov. 20-22 in Kingsville. In the TDSB junior championship, Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate lost 33-21 to Leaside High School. BOYS VOLLEYBALL Always strong in volleyball, Scarborough had a banner day on Tuesday, represented in three of the four TDSB title matches – and winning them all (including a double sweep for Sir. John A. Macdonald Collegiate) as follows: • boys 4A: Agincourt Collegiate

defeats Richview Collegiate 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-18); • boys 3A: Sir. John A. Macdonald CI defeats Humberside CI 3-2 (25-14, 18-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9) • junior boys: Sir. John A. Macdonald CI defeats Bloor CI 2-0 (25-23, 25-15). Both Agincourt and Sir. John A. Macdonald move on to their respective OFSAA championships Nov. 20-22. Those two schools met up in the east (Scarborough) division senior final with Agincourt winning 3-1. Sir John A. Macdonald won the east junior final 2-1 over Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate.

Scarborough Thunder bantams in OVFFL semifinal showdown The Scarborough-based Toronto Thunder’s bantam squad is the only city club with a team still in the running to make it to the Ontario Varsity Fall Football league’s championship day, Sunday, Nov. 23 at St. Michael’s College on Bathurst Street. To earn their ticket there, however, the bantam Thunder will have to go just outside the city for a conference final game this Sunday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. at Kinsmen Park in Pickering where they will take on the Ajax-Pickering

Dolphins. Both teams won last weekend’s conference semifinal games – the Thunder 40-6 over the visiting Burlington Stampeders, and AjaxPickering 49-0 over the visiting North York-based Metro Toronto Wildcats. Neighbouring teams The two neighbouring teams met up in the regular season finale Nov. 2 with Ajax-Pickering defeating the host Thunder 14-7 in a game

played at Scarborough’s Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School. The province-wide league runs fall minor football rep programs for bantam, peewee and atom divisions. In the spring and early summer, its parent league, the Ontario Varsity Football League, runs varsity, junior and bantam rep programs.

Challenge your mind and body with taekwondo On any day of the week, Master Myung’s Taekwondo Academy is filled with people of all ages, learning and perfecting their martial arts skills. The newest of six locations, at 4142 Sheppard Ave., in Scarborough opened in the fall and is already making a name as a leading martial arts school in the community. Established in 1994 by Master Hwa Sun Myung, Master Myung’s Taekwondo Academy instructs students from three-years-old all the way to 70 in the martial arts. In the fun and structured atmosphere, children and adults alike learn not only self-defence and fighting skills, but also discipline and respect that comes with training in taekwondo. A student of the martial arts learns humility, determination to meet goals and discipline to continue practicing the correct forms while engaging in a fun workout. Fitness, strength and flexibility are all incorporated into a taekwondo lesson and students will gain harmonious growth and improvements of life through taekwondo. The Master Myung’s After School program is a greatwaytogetyourkidsengagedinphysicalfitness and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Students will be picked up at the end of the school day to partake in taekwondo lessons, have snacks and complete homework at the academy. Junior students learn that unlike in team sports, taekwondo focuses on independent learning and what they get out of

their training depends on what they put in. Elite level athletes training for local, national and international competitions can also be found honing their skills at Master Myung’s Academy. Recently, athletes from Master Myung’s Taekwondo Academy represented Canada at the World Championships in Mexico and were successful in medalling at this prestigious event. All of the trainers at Master Myung’s are certified black belts and the head instructors are master level. Beyond their skill, each and every instructor possesses a true love of teaching taekwondo and is excited to share that with their students. Every new student is recommended to take the beginner classes where they will learn the fundamental basics that are built upon at every level. Remembrance Day parking tickets raise frustration While local residents w e re t a k i n g p a r t i n a Remembrance Day service at the Scarborough Cenotaph, a parking enforcement officer was ticketing their illegally parked vehicles. Gary Puddister said he was walking to the event when he spotted the officer ticketing cars on McIntosh Street, about 100 yards from the cenotaph. “I couldn’t believe it. I just thought: what’s the matter with this guy,” Puddister said. “You’ve got to look the other way once in a while, especially with a thing like this.” Puddister said he flagged down a passing police cruiser “and I pointed out what that idiot was doing.” The police officer, Puddister said, tracked down the parking officer and made him come back and remove all the tickets from the vehicles. “Mo s t o f t h e s e c a r s had legion membership (stickers) on them and the poppy on the licence plate, so most of them were

legion members,” he said. “And there’s nowhere else to park.” Puddister said about a dozen tickets were issued. “He was working his way up the street, so he hadn’t done them all yet,” Puddister said. Puddister lives in the area and attends the ceremony every year. McIntosh Street, he said, is “totally transformed for that one hour on Remembrance Day every year” with cars parked on both sides of the residential street. “This never happened before,” he said of the tickets. Su p t . Jo h n Ta n o u ye, the unit commander of 41 Division, attended the ceremony with his wife and granddaughter. He called the incident a misunderstanding. “He didn’t mean to do it. I don’t think he realized,” Tanouye said of the parking officer. Tanouye said the ceremony was a “great tribute to our veterans.” – Andrew Palamarchuk

Man rights wrong on uncle’s military grave ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com S c a r b o ro u g h’s Wi l l i a m Mitchell has a special name. It belongs to generations of men in his family who have served Canada, namely his uncle, William James Andrew Mitchell, and his uncle’s father, William Mitchell. William discovered something peculiar about his uncle. William James Andrew Mitchell was listed in government records and on his gravestone as Lance Corporal, but this was not actually the rank his uncle kept. Upon further inquiry, William discovered the true rank of his uncle was Acting Lance Sergeant. Acting Lance Sgt. Mitchell was known to the family as Billy. The discrepancy in his uncle’s rank in records and on his gravestone was a cause for concern for William, given that his family had a history serving their country. “The only thing that accompanied Billy’s final rank was the responsibili-

The war grave for William James Andrew Mitchell, killed in the Second World War, had the wrong rank. His nephew was recently able to have it corrected.

ties,” William said. “Billy died fulfilling the responsibilities of his rank. If he was Lance Corporal, instead of heading back out, he would have hit his kit and gone to sleep.” Billy was killed in action on Oct. 4, 1944 near Camp de Brasschaet, Belgium after being promoted to Acting Lance Sergeant a few days

earlier on Sept. 26. He was buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery in Bergon-op-Zoom, Netherlands, Section 12, Row H, Grave 10. Billy enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 16, 1941. His service of more than three years in the heart of the Second World War took him to the United States, England, France and Belgium. William investigated the rank discrepancy and found Billy’s service records listed him with his proper rank of Acting Lance Sgt. But with government databases listing with the incorrect rank, William wrote to several agencies in July 2013. “I wrote to all of the ones that include Canada’s war dead in their databases,” he said. “I was bringing the mistaken rank to their attention and asking if they would correct it.” Within two months, all the agencies William contacted had responded. The rank was corrected and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission com-

mitted to replacing Billy’s gravestone with a duplicate one inscribed with the correct rank. William explains that Billy’s rank was incorrect because as an “acting” Lance Sgt. he would not have received two extra chevrons indicating his new rank. An “acting” rank only receives the responsibilities, William said. Billy’s father, also William Mitchell, served in both World Wars. William’s family has lived in Scarborough since 1935 and though Billy was born in Peterborough, he too lived in Highland Creek from 1934 until he enlisted in 1941. William’s family’s long history with Scarborough and with the military prompted him to contact The Mirror and tell his story of yet another Canadian who sacrificed, now known to the world by his proper rank, Acting Lance Sgt. William James Andrew Mitchell.
