Er Shun’s partner, five-yearold Da Mao, didn’t show any interest when Er Shun went into heat so zoo staff resorted to artificial insemination. Number of candidate debates in Scarborough Scarborough has six federal ridings, and it appears residents of each will have at least one chance to see their candidates answer questions in person. Organizers hope these all-candidates debates will make local voters more informed on Election Day Oct. 19. “With the Oct. 19 election fast approaching, it is essential that people in our neighbourhood engage with the candidates on the topics and issues that are critical to them,” Joy Robertson of Scarborough Residents Unite said in a release announcing two of the events. “We believe an allcandidates’ meeting is one of the best ways that can happen.” DEBATES SCHEDULE: w In Scarborough Southwest, a debate is planned for St.
election Paul’s United Church on McIntosh Street Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. w Another is scheduled the same night, Oct. 7, for the Scarborough-Agincourt riding, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. at the St. Paul’s L’Amoureaux Centre at Finch and Warden avenues. w For the new riding of Scarborough North, there’s a debate Thursday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Malvern Recreation Centre on Sewells Road. w The riding of Scarborough-Rouge Park, which covers much of the territory of ScarboroughRouge River and Eastern Scarborough, has a similar event Thursday, Oct. 8,
2015
from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Malvern Family Resource Centre on Littles Road. w A debate for ScarboroughRouge Park is at the Heron Park Community Centre on Manse Road from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6. w The Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities has confirmed an allcandidates event for Scarborough Centre Wednesday, Oct. 14 at The Hub - Mid Scarborough, which is at Eglinton Avenue East and Brimley Road. Times have not been announced. Residents wondering which riding they live in after the latest redistribution can consult maps of each district on the Elections Canada website at www. elections.ca

Change the message, students told >>>from page 1 handle the social fallout that happens because of cyberbullying,” said Lianna McDonald, the centre’s executive director. Teens who find themselves labelled and persecuted for a mistake involving sex and technology, often too humiliated to tell anyone, can “change the story,” she said. “A mistake does not define you.” Leah Parsons, mother of Rehtaeh Parsons, said her daughter “had big dreams, huge hopes and was very excited for her future,” but in 2011 her life changed. At 15, Rehtaeh went to a house with a new friend and “someone decided to start drinking vodka,” Parsons told the students, many of whom were her daughter’s age then. “A photo was taken. She was violated without her consent. Suddenly, now she’s a ‘slut’” everyone at her school was talking about. “Suddenly, she becomes a target and labelled.” At 17, Rehtaeh was a suicide. “It didn’t have to end this

way,” said Parsons. “I think my daughter would be with us today” had she received messages expressing support instead of hate. Allan Hubley, father of James Hubley, said his son, who “didn’t have a mean bone in his body,” should be 19 today. But James died by suicide at age 15, his dad said, because bullying took him to a dark place where he couldn’t see the good side of life anymore. “James asked a question that no child should have to ask,”
Hubley said, his voice breaking, “which is, ‘Why do people hate me?’” McDonald said cyberbullying is not merely “drama” online, but deliberate, repeated behaviour the target can’t get away from. McDonald told the Pearson students they were needed to spread the word about an anti-bullying campaign promoting the website and the hashtag #ChangeTheStory But when she urged them to be honest and raise their hands if they had ever seen such pictures circulating, only a few did. Watching, Toronto police Det. Sgt. Kim Gross conceded it’s hard for teens to put their hands up, especially with police in the room, but Gross was certain at least half had some experience with sexual images of acquaintances on social media. “That’s not a true picture of the problem – there’s no way,” she added later. Harper – who McDonald said was invited “as a mom” – said teenagers don’t have to face their problems alone. “There is always hope, and it’s never too late to change the story,” she said.
Pair of candidates to pass on Scarborough Southwest debate MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Tw o c o n t e n d e r s f o r Scarborough Southwest appear unwilling to take part in the only organized all-candidates’ debate in the riding. Liberals have drawn national attention to the district by recruiting and nominating former Toronto police Chief Bill Blair to run against Dan Harris, a New Democrat who took the longheld Liberal seat in 2011. Community groups are hosting a debate Wednesday,
Oct. 7 at St. Paul’s United Church, but a Blair spokesperson sounded doubtful the Liberal will be there. “I don’t think we are going to that one,” said John Delacourt on Monday. “We have been going to the debates, as many as we can.” Speaking for the riding’s Conservative candidate, Roshan Nallaratnam, a Toronto police officer running against his old boss, Phil Trinh was more definitive. Nallaratnam won’t turn up, Trinh said, explaining the Conservative, nominated
after the election campaign began and “starting off late,” doesn’t have the time. “We’re so tight at this time (on his schedule), we have to do more productive things like meeting voters face-toface at residences,” Trinh said. Harris has committed to attending the debate, as has Tommy Taylor, a Green candidate who was arrested in 2010 during Toronto’s G20 summit and has challenged Blair to discuss police actions at the summit in a public forum. The debate next Wednesday, organized by the
McIntosh Street church and Scarborough Residents Unite, was announced last week. On Monday, Rev. Daniel Benson of St. Paul’s said he hasn’t been told Blair and Nallaratnam won’t attend, and will be saving them seats. “We’re expecting them to be here. I’m continuing to press them to come.” De l a c o u r t s a i d Bl a i r attended a “debate” in the riding last Thursday at Atahualpa Cooperative Homes, where the former chief, Harris and Taylor briefly shared a table inside the Brimley Road building.
But others who were there said the debate appeared accidental. Though posted on the Cooperative Housing Federation of Toronto website as a “meet and greet” with local candidates, the meeting was scheduled as a series of sessions with different candidates for co-op residents. It was mainly a meeting to talk to co-op residents about their housing concerns, and “was never advertised as a public debate,” argued Taylor. Delacourt said Blair were to be part of a Rogers Local Campaign debate to be
taped in a closed studio on Wednesday that will air for the first time on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Nallaratnam, who did not go to the Atahualpa Co-op, isn’t scheduled to be at the Rogers debate either. He never received an invitation from Rogers, Trinh said. Yesterday, however, Rogers TV producer Charmaine Wong said that Nallaratnam was invited to the debate but declined. The Mirror has not had an interview with Nallaratnam, but has spoken with Blair about a variety of issues.

t was reassuring this week to hear work-to-rule job actions in public elementary schools across the province will not impact Remembrance Day ceremonies in the schools or the chance for local students to take part in literary and poster contests sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. John Smith, president of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, told Metroland Media Toronto the ceremonies will go ahead. “We’re making an exception for Remembrance Day. All Remembrance Day activities will continue... We’re recognizing that and honouring that,” he said. Smith added the annual Remembrance Day poster and literary contests sponsored by the legion for more than 50 years, will also continue in the schools. While not specifically a school project, the contests are often promoted to our view students by their teachers and the entries forwarded to the We all have a nearest legion branch. contests are part of role in keeping theThe legion’s goal to ensure Nov. 11 relevant Remembrance Day remains relevant to young people, and they understand the reasons why it’s important. “We’re trying to pass the torch to younger people,” explained Sheila Harris, youth education chair for the 24 legion branches in Toronto. “The younger people have to remember the sacrifices that were made.” The contests are divided in age groups ranging from grades 1 to 12 for the posters, and grades 4 to 12 for essays and poems. There’s also video and public speaking categories. The theme for all categories is remembrance. While teachers certainly have a role to play in these contests, parents should also be encouraging their children to understand and honour the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to keep our country free. If your child has an interest in art, poetry or writing essays, suggest they enter. Along with being a positive experience for children, they also have the chance to win prizes and attend awards ceremonies at the legion. If they are national winners, their works will be displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. We encourage students to ask their teachers for information on the contests. The info is also available at every legion branch across the city, by going online at www.legion.ca/youth/contests or by emailing Sheila Harris at stharris@rogers.com

Filion book seeks to explain Ford phenomena Councillor pens his take on the Rob Ford story Rob Ford is a gift to storytellers, no doubt about it. From the time he stumbled into the light as a rookie city councillor from Ward 2, Ford had a knack for presenting a narrative, or at least a hook for one. First, he was the guy who famously spent $2 a year in his City Hall office budget. How’d he do that? Then he would say awful things about all sorts of people. How’d he get away with that? One day, against all odds, he got himself elected mayor and went on a toxic, drug-andalcohol-fuelled bender unrivalled in the history of municipal government, somehow maintaining an unimaginable level of popularity in the process. Say what?
david nickle the city The story is irresistible. Former Toronto Star reporter Robyn Doolittle set it down in book form in the aptly titled Crazy Town, a book-length account of the Fords and her and the Star’s investigation into the now-infamous “crack video,” with some biographical talk. Ford’s former chief of staff, Mark Towhey, is getting set to come out with a book describing his attempts to help Ford through his substance abuse issues. And in a month, Willowdale Councillor John Filion will be presenting his own story of the story, The Only Average Guy: Inside the Uncommon World of Rob Ford. As a point of full disclosure, Filion interviewed me for the book he was
researching last year as the municipal election was getting into full swing. At the time, he told me it wouldn’t be a lurid tellall, but rather something more thoughtful – aiming for the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.’ I wasn’t sure what to make of that then. But based on some promotional copy sent around Tuesday, I think I see what he’s getting at. The book takes, at its starting point, the football pool that Filion and Ford took part in and the uneasy water-cooler male bonding that reminded Filion nothing so much as the time at 10 years old when he invited an ungainly classmate home for lunch after church. Rob Ford, theorizes Filion, is that lumpen boy grown large. More intriguing, I suspect, will be the other ungainly 10-year-old men that Filion seems to argue make up Ford Nation – that 30 per cent rump of
voters who will support Rob and his brother Doug no matter what. In an interview with former Ford Svengali Nick Kouvalis, Filion draws a picture of “partisan brains” contained mainly in the crania of heavy-set men with hard fathers. No one, he seems to suggest, will sway those brains from the Ford brand. Those of us outside Ford Nation shouldn’t be smug, though: for pretty much every brain, the Ford narrative is impossible to look away from. When it was in full swing, it was enough to transform the political face of our city. And everybody – citizens, journalists and even city councillors – has a great stake in figuring out what shape that face has finally taken.

There are still a few regular season games to play, but Jays fans sound like they’re already in fine playoff form. If you weren’t able to make it to a game these past few months, but managed to score post-season tickets, what follows is the game plan that worked so well for fans down the stretch. Study it and you’ll be raring to go when the playoffs start next week. Get your game face on before leaving home to go to the ballpark. Check. Wear a team jersey with your favourite player’s name on the back. Check. Newly-minted rally towel should be firmly in hand at all times. Check. Be ready to do the wave at a moment’s notice. Check. Turn up the volume when the Jays take the field at the top of the first inning. Check.

And kick it into overdrive when David Price so much as peeks his head out of the dugout to peer into the stands. Mental health services in scarborough: • Programs are spread too thin • Newcomers are falling through the cracks • Care providers are dealing with cultural and language barriers MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
Hong Fook staff and volunteers told the panel culturally competent care means more dignity and respect for patients. Wong said hiring staff members who speak other languages isn’t enough unless a provider offers culturally adaptive programs and can demonstrate cultural training that extends throughout the organization. When struggling with mental health, many Scarborough residents of East Asian backgrounds approach settlement services, but avoid mental health services because of language barriers and stigma, Wong said. “Then they end up in the hospital. We want to do a lot more preventative work.”
M
ental health services are spread thin in Scarborough, and too many people, particularly newcomers to Canada, fall through the cracks. A provincial panel studying health care in Scarborough and West Durham Region got that message at meetings last month, from people hoping it can help. Health-care providers, meanwhile, keep trying new programs aimed at reaching Scarborough residents struggling with mental illness despite barriers of culture, language or distance. Acknowledging people who need cognitive behavioural therapy “typically face challenges like long wait lists, a shortage of therapists and a lack of access to a therapist outside of regular business hours,” The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) has started putting therapy sessions for outpatients online. This month, the hospital also announced patients can also use its library of mental health applications for devices, suggesting patients “could use a relaxation app while taking transit to a mental health appointment.” For now, the apps or online sessions are only available in English. Dr. Da v i d Gra t ze r, a TSH staff psychiatrist, said they’re a great help anyway to many people with anxiety or depression. online tools Some patients have physical ailments or busy schedules, and online tools mean the hospital can deliver treatment “on their terms and on their schedule,” said Gratzer, adding the English used is simple and free of jargon. Bonnie Wong, executive director of the Hong Fook Mental Health Association, at the agency’s head office on Midland Avenue in Scarborough. A provincial panel is studying the delivery of acute care programs and services in Scarborough and West Durham, and Wong is among those hoping this can lead to more mental health services able to reach Scarborough residents.
dents are immigrants, there are more calls for what are called culturally competent or adaptive mental health services. Immigrants and visible minorities tend to underutilize mental health services, and in Scarborough many of their needs are still not met, Bonnie Wong, executive director of the Hong Fook Mental Health Association said last month at the agency’s head office on Midland Avenue. Hong Fook started more than 30 years ago to help people of East Asian backgrounds navigate the healthcare system. Today, Raymond Chung, one of its founders, is a member of the provin-
cial panel, but last month panel members were told Scarborough providers don’t offer enough services adapted for people of different cultural backgrounds. Nor is there any dialogue between local providers such as Hong Fook and the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), the province’s health authority, on how to fill in these gaps, said Wong. In last five years, Wong argued, there’s been no real spending increase through the LHIN for mental health programs in Scarborough, “but in Durham it’s doubledigit, more than that. That’s a huge discrepancy in terms of investment.” At one meeting last month,
Dr. Ian Dawe, mental health and addictions physician lead for the LHIN, which covers an area from Scarborough to Peterborough, said he’s not involved in budgeting, but the issue of service access “is huge” and waits for some mental health services across Ontario “are unconscionably long.” During his 18 months as lead, Dawe said the LHIN has launched six significant projects related to Scarborough. The most successful is ACTT, the Assertive Community Treatment Team, “like a hospital without walls” for people with severe and recurring mental illness. Dawe said people languished on wait lists or hospital beds waiting for ACTT, but the LHIN recently created an “after ACTT,” a step-

down program, to expand the service. “Is there still need out there? Absolutely,” he said. Mental health challenges affect people from each culturally background differently, said Dawe, adding the University of Toronto, where he teaches, is focused on cultural competency. “Culturally competent practitioners will be practicing within our boundaries,” Dawe said. “They don’t have to speak the actual language specifically,” but having “good, nuanced understanding” of a culture helps. Last month, agency representatives told the panel some patients, when discharged from hospital in Scarborough, are not going back to a healthy home. Gladys Cheung, resident access and support manager for Toronto Community Housing (TCH), has a team that tries to connect TCH tenants with infestation or clutter issues to mental health services. Often in Scarborough, there’s not a whole lot to connect to, she said. The “best window” to deal with a problem could be when a troubled tenant is in a hospital, but sometimes, Cheung said, her team isn’t “looped in.” If the tenant returns to an unhealthy environment, it can become a revolving door situation, she added. Services for mental health
and addiction are lacking across Toronto, and when tenants are asked to go as far as Ajax for treatment, it’s discouraging, Cheung said. “When you don’t have a car, that’s way too far.” Claire Fainer, executive director of East Metro Youth Services (EMYS), said it’s hard for the service system to develop the expertise and perhaps cultural competence and sensitivity required by every new population coming to Scarborough. transit challenges Scarborough is unique in Toronto because of its transportation challenge for people without cars. If you or your children must see a specialist once or twice every week, as some programs require, “you can’t manage,” Fainer said. EMYS, named lead agency for Toronto in transforming mental health services for children and youth, wants to make access as easy and equitable as possible across the city, said Fainer, adding EMYS opened a mental health walk-in clinic, now operating six days a week, where youth can be seen within 25 minutes. “You don’t have to overthink things,” just walk in the door, she said. Panel members send their recommendations to Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins Oct. 10.

The Brick continues partnership with Children’s Miracle Network The Brick enters year two of its partnership with Children’s Miracle Network to help improve the lives of children and families across Canada and celebrates Brickley Bear’s first birthday with a new Superhero Edition. Following the great success of its inaugural year, The Brick launches its second year as a partner of Children’s Miracle Network in Canada. In the first year of its partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, The Brick raised nearly $700,000 for children’s hospitals across Canada. “The Brick is a great Canadian retailer which has provided value to the homes of Canadians with a team of community caring staff that made the inaugural year of our partnership a great success,” said John Hartman, chief operating officer, Canada, with Children’s Miracle Network. “We are thrilled to continue a partnership with The Brick that does have a real impact
on the lives of children. We’re elated to have help from The Brick in raising funds for the equipment and research that help to save the lives of ill and injured children. Brickley is a good friend and role model to kids, whether they’re sick or healthy.” President of The Brick Group, Jim Caldwell, said, “The Brick is proud to be part of communities across Canada and has a strong tradition of giving to these communities. We care about our neighbours – especially the youngest generation. That’s why we’re partnering with Children’s Miracle Network.” Both The Brick and Children’s Miracle Network believe in keeping funds in the region where they are raised. All proceeds from Brickley sales will go toward the Children’s Miracle Network member hospital that serves the community in which the purchase or donation was
made. “The focus of our campaign is all about ‘Helping to Improve the Lives of Children, Brick by Brick’”, said Caldwell. “The reason we chose that name for our campaign is that we believe that every little bit counts towards making a real difference to the lives of children and their families.” In celebration of Brickley’s first birthday, a second edition, Superhero Brickley, is available to help raise funds. Brickley stuffed animals made by Gund are available in The Brick’s 220 stores nationwide and online. All of the net proceeds from the sale of Brickley go to Children’s Miracle Network in support of the local children’s hospital. The Brick will match every dollar donated through from Sept. 1, 2015 to Feb. 29, 2016 up to a maximum of $100,000. Limited quantities of Brickley are now available for sale.

Designers’ take on four decorating myths Find out which common design “rules” were made to be broken Let’s face it, as countless home decorating tips abound, one’s first instinct is to take them as truths. Yet, why is it that we continue to listen to others’ ‘rules’ when it comes time to decorate our own homes? Hunter Douglas, a leading window treatment company, asked two top designers to describe what they believe to be the most common decorating myths.
Myth No. 1: Don’t mix floral and plaid prints “Why ask the patch to match when the interest lies in the juxtaposition and the mix-and-match of colour and texture?” says Katie Leede of Katie Leede & Company. Leede suggests that when using several patterns in your home, try varying the scale of the designs, but keep to a simple palette to unify. “Use large florals and small stripes or tiny florals and big plaids,” she explains. “Think of your geometric plaids and stripes more like a solid or a texture that adds structure to the more playful, eye-catching floral. You can achieve this by pulling out one colour in the floral and make that the dominant colour of the plaid or the stripe.”
Myth No. 2: A view is better without window treatments Despite common perceptions, window treatments can enhance a view rather than take away from it. Case in point, designer James Rixner turned to Hunter Douglas Alustra Woven Textures soft screen shades when it came time to decorate the windows in his show house room. “The shades allowed for light and a partial view, masking the unattractive outdoor elements,” Rixner explains. “The fabric shimmered in the afternoon sunshine and the shades diffused the light. They looked so refined and elegant.” These window dressings also provide UV-protection.
Myth No. 3: Pairs must be placed opposite each other While Katie Leede likes having pairs, she doesn’t think one needs to go, in her words, “all Noah’s Ark and overdo it.” “I am starting to play with splitting up pairs of lamps and chairs so they aren’t opposite each other, but scattered through the room,” she reports. The eye still seems to register the balance.
Myth No. 4: ceilings must be white Contrary to popular belief, a pure white ceiling doesn’t always work. According to James Rixner, with certain wall colours it can make the ceiling look lower. “If you have richly toned walls and your ceil-
ing is pure white, it will effectively give you a lower ceiling, something most people want to avoid,” advises Rixner. “It gives the eye too much of a jolt to go from a wall colour to a pure white ceiling.”

Scarborough residents invited to wax poetic New poetry club holds first meeting Oct. 2 TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Scarborough’s poets and poetry lovers are invited to share their appreciation of the written word by joining the new Scarborough Poetry Club. The club will hold its first meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Agincourt Library, 155 Bonis Ave. Its founders, poet Jeevan Bhagwat and poetry curator Anna Nieminen, will facilitate the group. “Our mandate is basically to provide a warm and welcoming environment that fosters the creative exchange of poetry among poets of all stages of their writing careers,” said Bhagwat. “I believe that everyone has the ability to write poetry, and
they should not be intimated by the idea of writing poetry. This club will be a warm and welcoming environment to everyone, and I think it’s going to be very dynamic, and it’s going to give them an opportunity to get their voice heard.” Meetings will feature poetry readings and writing workshops. Writing materials will be provided. Members are encouraged to bring poems they wrote or are working on, and works by their favourite authors to share. Anyone is welcome to join. “We’re looking to have a good mix of individuals at all stages of their writing careers,” said Bhagwat. “We believe that this will make the group stronger and more dynamic. Even if you’re not a poet per say, and you just have an appreciation of poetry, or if you have some poems that you loved when you were growing up, and have an admiration for some Canadian poets or otherwise, you can join the group and
emerging writers here, why not put together a club,” said Bhagwat. “Give the residents of Scarborough an opportunity to get their voices heard as well, and also introduce them to established poets, because you can learn quite a lot from poets who have already made it on their own. And it’s a great opportunity to network and get points and tips from established poets, and get their work out there.” An award-winning writer, and member of The League of Canadian Poets, Bhagwat’s most recent book, The Weight of Dreams, is available from IN Publications. A poem he wrote about the Agincourt community is also featured on the Toronto Public Library’s Toronto Poetry Map, which lets people explore the city through poetry. read those poems and get feedback from the group. We want to promote a love of poetry in the city, and we believe this is a great vehicle to do so.” The creation of the club was sponsored by the Agincourt Library and a Jane’s Walk Eyes on the Street Grant. The
inspiration for the group came to Bhagwat and Nieminem during a Scarborough poetry walk held as part of the Jane’s Walk events in May. “We got to talking, there was a great turnout, and I personally believe that Scarborough has such a rich and vibrant community, and a lot of

Bhagwat hopes the group will give people a chance to share poems and ideas, while also fostering a greater appreciation of Scarborough’s writing community. “We need to prop up our Scarborough poets, and I think this is a great opportunity to do so,” he said. “If you have a love, or simply an appreciation, for poetry, this would be a great opportunity to mix with other writers, to get to know some of the writers in Scarborough, to get your voice heard and wax poetic.”

Maintain your health long term with Brimely Physiotherapy When you think about the future, do you picture yourself playing at the park with your grandkids? Or hitting a hole-in-one on the golf course? Taking care of your health is the best way to keep an active lifestyle as we age, though with such busy lifestyles it is easy to put ourselves last. Instead of leaving your health benefits untouched until the aches and pains interfere with life, book an appointment with a physiotherapist or chiropractor to maintain your health though out the year. “You don’t wait until the end of the year to take your vitamin, you take it all year long to feel the benefits. You should put that same mentality into using your health benefits,” says Dr. Vanita Bali, chiropractor at Brimley Physio, a mutli-disciplinary physiotherapy clinic located at 3333 Brimley Rd. As the year comes to a close, she says the clinic fills up with people looking to use their benefits, but the best time to book an appointment to address stiffness or discomfort is now, before the rush of holidays parties and family get-togethers start to add up. “At Brimley Physio, we believe in maintenance care,” says Dr. Bali. “Maintaining health through the year is better for our patients, and we can see them as they progress and follow-up with treat-
ments as necessary to maintain the benefits.” During the initial assessment, patients will meet with a certified physiotherapist for a detailed assessment of the injury and medical history, before determining a treatment plan with the physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists and chiropodists that make up the wellness team. Despite the large team, the clinic provides intimate care for all patients, who receive oneon-one attention during their treatments. ‘There isn’t a cookie cutter solution for everybody, so our patients receive a custom plan and our team cares about the success of our patients.” The one-stop-shop approach to healing benefits patients, who will receive multiple perspectives on treatments from registered professionals, as well as compression stockings and custom orthotics without leaving the building. The clinic itself is a modern facility, with the most up-to-date equipment, and “zen” blue walls and hardwood floors, that provide a sense of calm for patients. Brimley Physio provides direct billing to some insurance companies, and every service offered is covered by most benefits policies. Patient-centred care and earlier diagnosis a must for dementia strategy, says former nurse and neurologist by JOANNA LAVOIE
H
amilton resident Phyllis Fehr, 57, is a member of the Ontario Dementia Advisory Group, a group of people living with dementia that was formed last fall with the purpose of influencing policies, practices and people in dementia management. A former ICU nurse who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s three years ago, Fehr offers a unique perspective on the challenges facing Ontario’s health-care system in providing quality care for the increasing number of people diagnosed with dementia. Having experienced the healthcare system from both sides of the coin as a health-care professional and as a patient, she said she has some strong ideas about what the Ontario government needs to do to successfully tackle this significant challenge. Fehr’s journey with dementia started in 2010

when she began noticing small changes in herself, notably forgetfulness. She discussed her concerns with her doctor, but it wasn’t until two years later she received a working diagnosis of mixed dementia in the form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia, a less prevalent form of dementia that occurs when abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein accumulate inside the brain’s nerve cells. In the meantime, Fehr was having trouble multi-tasking and was drawing blanks on details and tasks that were once second nature. Doubting her abilities and concerned about providing the best care she could to her patients, she took a leave from her nursing career. “It was affecting my work and I needed to figure this out,” said Fehr, who, despite being under the care of a neurologist and a gerontologist, had started to feel frustrated by the lack of an action plan.

part 2 of 3 “From having my first symptoms to diagnosis it was basically two years in limbo. I felt quite stressed.” With a diagnosis, she said she was eager to move forward on a course of treatment, but again was stuck in a waiting game. “I’m a firm believer in treating something sooner than waiting.” Fehr decided to take the matter into her own hands and started seeing renowned neurologist Dr. Sandra Black in early 2013. “I’m very grateful for the intervention and understanding of Dr. Sandra Black. Once I started with her, she helped me understand what was going on, get on track and sort out what was happening.” Under Black’s care, Fehr said she’s received the “patient-centred and

patient-involved care” all patients with dementia need. “We think of each of our patients and their families as having a unique and important story to tell,” explained Black. “We try to partner with our families and share their load to ensure they know they are not alone in their difficult journey, as most dementias still lack definitive treatments.” “It can’t just be clinical,” agreed
Fehr, who, as a health-care professional, said she appreciates the challenges doctors face to provide the best care they can while dealing with extremely limited resources. “I realize there’s only so much time and money, and not enough staff and specialists. All of that needs to be improved,” she said, adding an earlier diagnosis would have changed the course of her life. >>>helping, page 33

In Ontario, a lot of time, attention and money is being placed on getting an early handle on dementia, understanding how to better recognize its early signs and mitigate its symptoms. Dr. Doug Munoz, a neuroscientist at Queen’s University, has focused his career on understanding how the brain controls eye movement and how brain damage or abnormalities, including those caused by dementia, can affect it. “What we have is a toolbox for how the brain works,” he said. Munoz is exploring the connection between eye movement and dementia. To do so, he’ll be measuring where the eyes go to study memory loss using videobased eye tracking. “This study will be helpful in early detection. It will help us detect dementia earlier than we can now,” said

>>>from page 32 oanne Woodward Fraser, a spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care, said the government is preparing to care for an influx of Ontarians living with dementia. “Initial engagement with the sector has begun,” she said via email. “Ontario is gathering input from individuals with the disease, their families and caregivers, as well as health-care providers involved in treatment and support.” Still in the early stages – and too early to speak to specifics as the provincial government wants to “get it right” – Woodward Fraser said the first step will be to develop a “coordinated, collaborative approach with input from patients and their care partners, all health-care providers, as well as organizations involved in supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Further, she said the provincial government has mandated Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris to champion the development of a provincial dementia strategy. Fehr agrees a holistic and streamlined approach must be taken to treating patients with dementia to avoid unnecessary and often detrimental delays and frustrations. “Currently, the process takes so long. It makes me worry about everybody else,” said Fehr, who is also a volunteer board member for the Dementia Network of the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network, which is working to find ways to work together with the government to understand gaps in the system and provide a better integrated system care for those with dementia. “There has to be a way to streamline all the services under one umbrella to avoid reinventing the wheel every time. We need to be looking more at the big picture.”

It’s nice to look after other people’s parents,” said Abdool. The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is also doing its part to encourage doctors to consider working with the elderly, said its president Dr. Mike Toth. “With an aging population, we know it is important to have enough physicians to care for seniors, including those with complex conditions such as dementia,” he said. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Jude May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified throughout the whole world now and forever, Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, help to the helpless, pray for us. Say nine times a day for nine days. Prayer will be answered by the eighth day, it has never failed. Publication must be promised. Thank you very much Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Jude, for favors granted. - C.F.
HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. M.L.
