Man found dead in Ellesmere building

Health care changes will be felt by local hospitals MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Changes to Scarborough’s hospitals are slowly coming into focus, and so are concerns. For months, the CEOs of Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital have warned
provincial plans will rearrange the area’s health care system in very important ways. Still, last week Dr. John Wright of TSH complained there was little community discussion about this. That should change in December, when a consultant’s report spells out choices facing TSH, which Wright said
must cut $17 million to balance its budget in April and a total of $50 million to $60 million over three years. “I suspect later this year this room will be standing room only,” Wright said last Thursday at the Birchmount campus, where a meeting on “refreshing” the hospital strategic plan to address the health care “transforma-
tion” drew a small crowd familiar with the hospital. No similar exercise has started at RVHS, but CEO Rik Ganderton told Scarborough councillors hospitals will move from being the centre of health care delivery “to simply a component” in the next few years. “Fundamental changes are
coming,” he said. Standing with Wright, Ganderton said it made sense to stop doing cataract surgeries at RVHS’s Scarborough campus, Centenary. The Birchmount campus does 6,000 a year, compared to hundreds at Centenary, so RVHS is in discus>>>EXPECT, page 11

A woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 death of her disabled teenage daughter. On Feb. 19, 2011, police were called to a townhouse at 150 Burrows Hall Blvd. near Markham Road and Sheppard Avenue. Cynara Amiee Ali, 16, was found with no vital signs and was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police reported at the time that two men forced their way into the townhouse and that one man, armed with a gun, forced the teen’s mother to accompany him while he opened various doors throughout the home. “The men were looking for a specific item,” police said in a February 2011 news release. There were no surveillance cameras at the townhouse complex. Earlier this year, police revealed they believed the home invasion didn’t occur. On March 8, Cindy Ann Sherry Ali, then 41, was charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide necessaries of life, attempt obstruct justice, public mischief and two counts of fabricating evidence. Police didn’t release the cause of Cynara’s death because it’s a matter of evidence before the courts. Police had said there were “no apparent injuries” on the victim. Cindy Ann Sherry Ali, now 42, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Sgt. In one case, a teen boy has been charged after a woman was sexually assaulted Monday night. Police said the teen came up to the woman in a park near Timberbank Boulevard, brandished a knife, demanded her cellphone and purse and sexually assaulted her around 7 p.m. The teen then approached two women nearby, brandished a knife and robbed one of the women of her purse. Police arrested the teen a short distance away. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, three counts of robbery, two counts of disguise with intent, two counts of weapons dangerous and two counts of breach of recognizance. Parking fine revenues should pay for transit

alton McGuinty’s announcement Monday night that he is stepping down as Ontario’s premier and proroguing the provincial legislature has opened a number of interesting scenarios for Toronto’s many Liberal MPPs. Say what you wish about the timing of McGuinty’s move, Toronto residents can expect a number of their provincial representatives to be serious contenders for the Ontario Liberal Party’s leadership. our view Toronto has been good to the Ontario Liberals, showing Toronto MPPs them strong support in the last three provincial elections. After understand majority government wins in transit needs 2003 and 2007, the Liberals formed a minority government in 2011 and would not have done so without Toronto’s backing. More than a third of the Liberals 53 seats at Queen’s Park belong to Toronto MPPs. We have strong political influence in the party, and that will be reflected once the race to replace McGuinty heats up. Part of McGuinty’s legacy is transit. He created the provincial transit authority Metrolinx with the mandate to build and fund transit across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Whoever replaces him must continue to make transit in the GTHA a priority. Any MPP from Toronto will clearly understand the importance of the transit file, and it should be a major plank in the campaigns of those running for the party’s leadership. Ontario Progressive Conservative Party leader Tim Hudak was at Toronto City Hall Tuesday morning to talk transit at a meeting scheduled before McGuinty made his announcement. He will be making transit and traffic gridlock a key issue when we do get a provincial election call, presumably sometime after the Liberals pick their new leader. Flanked by a number of city councillors including Mayor Rob Ford’s brother Doug, Hudak looks as if he’ll have no problem working with the Ford administration at city hall. McGuinty was also able to work with Mayor Ford. In a statement on McGuinty’s decision, Ford said, “While we had different political views on some issues, Mr. McGuinty and I always had a very good working relationship as mayor and premier.” Maintaining that good working relationship with Toronto’s mayor will be crucial for whoever is chosen as the Ontario Liberal Party’s next leader. If council wants to penalize the owners of cars, delivery trucks and other vehicles belonging to people trying to conduct legitimate business off of the inner city roads, why not? Rooming houses abound in Highland Creek To the editor: Re: ‘Building height limit of four storeys sought for Highland Creek,’ News Oct. 11. The article described well the debate about redeveloping Highland Creek. Your reporter obviously stayed until the end when Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moesser asked for a show of hands
vote on which plan was preferred by residents. What your reporter missed, however, was the stormy side issue, which arose over residents’ strong opposition to illegally operated student rooming houses in the area. These are proliferating in Highland Creek, which is in walking distance to the University of Toronto’s
Scarborough Campus. The owners are never resident in the buildings. They may not even be resident in the province or country. The current Scarborough bylaw, which is still in effect, allows only one legal rental unit (such as a basement apartment) per dwelling. These rooming houses are often housing five or more students.
The U of T has dumped its apparent policy of encouraging foreign student enrolment (and revenue generating high tuition) without providing affordable student housing onto the backs of local residents. Meanwhile, the City of Toronto seems to be turning a blind eye to the problem. Ken Grant
Privatization of TTC would only have short-term rewards To the editor: Re: ‘TTC should be privatized,’ Letters, Oct. 5 W.D. Adamson is eager to privatize the TTC, yet he seems to forget where it came from. It is fairly common knowledge that when they built the TTC tram and subway lines, it was an investment of millions of dollars of public money. Then when they built the SkyDome, it was with more public money, an
investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, and then Hwy. 407, with more than a billion dollars of public money invested for Ontarians to build a road that would eventually be toll free after it was paid for. Then when they needed money to pay the taxes or maintain and improve them, nobody wanted to pay. The privateers figured, “hey, let’s just wait a bit and we’ll get something
for nothing when the government’s sell them.” Surprisingly, they did. The TTC has been on life support since the Harris Tories reneged on the province’s portion of subsidies forcing greater strain on the city. Given its tenuous situation, we’ll see what kind of bargain price the city and province can come up with should they decide to give away another pillar of the common good to balance
their books in the short term. And that’s if there is any debate. Privatization should be front and centre, but not because it’s the solution. launched a separate effort – called Span McCowan – to cover a stretch of McCowan Road, nearly uncrossable for pedestrians, with concrete decking and turn the span into a park beside an all-year indoor market building. Advocates for both causes
thought they had a strong case when city-owned property by McCowan sold last December for $22.6 million. The area’s secondary plan said money from city property sales there “will be utilized in a strategic manner” to further goals for the civic centre area,

After receiving backing from Scarborough councillors in June to have their concept studied and the $22.6 million diverted into an account for local use, Ross and McLeod saw the city clerk rule the request out of order when it reached Toronto Council. They were back at Scarborough Community Council Wednesday, Oct. 10, to ask for action so that Span McCowan doesn’t “die on the vine,” Ross said. Councillors started discussing how they could send the request to Mayor Rob Ford’s powerful executive committee, where Scarborough holds five of 13 seats. Then Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson told them all money the city agency Build Toronto made through its sale of Grangeway Avenue land is “a phantom fund,” spent already on streetcars. Councillors, including those from Scarborough, had decided that’s how Build would spend its profits, Thompson pointed out. “There is no money.” One colleague, Glenn De Baeremaeker, had argued Scarborough needs something “as special and spectacular” as projects that have been possible in downtown Toronto, and that Span McCowan would give more people a reason to come to central Scarborough. Councillors were looking over a Public Space and Streetscape Master Plan for the area, for which, a report recommended seven priority projects –a revitalization of Albert Campbell Square and reconfiguration of street entrances to Borough Drive being two – at an estimated $15.4-million
cost, of which $1.3 million is available. Ro s s a n d Mc L e o d have asked for a study to estimate the costs of Span McCowan and the market. Though generally supportive of the projects, several Scarborough councillors said they doubted they could convince their executive committee colleagues to give Scarborough back money from the sale. Perhaps the private sector would help build the park and market, Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly said. Demanding money from Build is “opening up a can of worms” because it will be money drawn from property sales across the city, said Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford, adding he needs $30,000 for a park in his ward and can’t get it. Chin Lee said the armslength agency is selling land from a former police college in his ScarboroughRouge River ward. He would want to keep it, he said. “Is that fair to the rest of Toronto?” Mike Del Grande, the city’s budget chief, said Toronto is facing a budget shortfall and it’s easy to call for more spending. Del Grande mentioned council had added Crawford’s ward to a priority list for sewer infrastructure and that Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle Berardinetti had the executive approve the same thing for her ward this week. Unless paid off with land sales, the streetcar purchase adds to Toronto’s debt, he told the meeting, adding, “I wish you guys would spend a day with me trying to plug up some of these (budget) holes.” In the end, De Baeremaeker withdrew a motion asking executive to support using $22.6 million on Span McCowan and the civic beautification projects. He said he will write the committee a letter for consideration instead. Staff said they would report on Span McCowan as part of their recommendations in the New Year for another planning exercise in the area.

McGuinty’s decision proves need for city to fund transit I t’s been a long time since anyone has illustrated the argument for made-in-Toronto transit funding solutions as well as our soon-to-be-former Premier Dalton McGuinty did Monday night. McGuinty’s surprise resignation was not only as leader of the Liberals and
premier of the province — but as the remaining steward of Toronto’s current light rail transit expansion plan. That $8.5 billion plan, for light rail on Eglinton, Finch and Sheppard Avenues, is the reliable base-line for hope, for those who wanted to see faster transit to sub-
urban communities. We’ve dreamed of other plans, of course. Mayor Rob Ford briefly created a convincing enough scenario in which the private sector might build subways to Scarborough. TTC Chair Karen Stintz created an even shorter-lived scenario in which Toronto might

have as many new transit routes as burst capillaries on an old drunk’s nose. And now, the morning after McGuinty’s exit announcement, there are indications that even the $8.5 billion light rail plan isn’t that reliable. Tim Hudak, the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, stopped by Toronto City Hall to affirm his preference for a Mayor Ford-style subway expansion.

Hudak’s chances Although the days are early, it’s fair to say that Hudak’s chances of being the next premier of Ontario are excellent, as are the chances that Ontarians will be given the opportunity to weigh those chances in an election within the next six months. What happens to the $8.5 billion in light rail funding if that happens? Well, it’s up to Hudak. Work’s already started on the EglintonScarborough Crosstown line, and unless the Progressive Conservatives want to develop a reputation as the kind of government that fills in holes on Eglinton (as the Mike Harris government did there in 1995) there will probably be some form of light rail transit there. But if the decision gets made to bury the rest of the line, that will take care of most of the $8.5 billion right there. And Finch and Sheppard will be unfunded. When will subway funding
come? “When I am the next premier, we will use whatever dollars are available to build underground,” he told reporters. Uh huh. Toronto’s decision earlier this year to look into funding transit expansion on its own starts to look pretty good, given all that — because really, with a provincial government deep in deficit, whatever money’s available won’t pay for much light rail, let alone subways. It’s pretty clear, as we move into our suddenly very muddy future the only reliable way to get around this town by bus, subway or light rail, is to belly up to the table and put our own money down. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. 2013 Nissan Pathfinder:
More bang for your buck Nissan won’t say it this bluntly, but when it comes to the 2013 Pathfinder, it’s all about what you get for the money. And what you get is a full-size, sevenseat CUV that is 500 lb lighter, 25 per cent more fuel-efficient and, get this, an average $6,000 less across the board than the Pathfinder it replaces. step forward as the former model was too thirsty, too heavy and too expensive compared to competitors such as Highlander, Explorer and MDX to name a few. To my eyes, it is very North American not just in how it sits on the ground but in the very long list of features. All versions are powered by the latest version of the 3.5-litre VQ DOHC V6 producing 260 hp (240 lb/ft of torque) in front- or all-wheel drive through the second generation Xtronic CVT. Nissan started doing away with automatics 20 years ago and has produced nine million CVTs since then. With this combination, the new Pathfinder can pull up to 5,000 lb in AWD and, depending on trim level, comes with a seven-pin hitch. With the FWD model, the fuel rating is 7.7/10.5/9.3L/100 km city/highway/combined. Opt for the AWD and it’s 7.9/10.8/9.5K/100 km which very close to the FWD and helps bolster Nissan’s belief CVTs are better when it comes to fuel, which by the way, is regular in the Pathfinder. Currently, the 2013 Pathfinder is the sole CUV in its class with selectable FWD, Auto or AWD Lock modes from the available intuitive ALL-MODE 4x4-i system. In Canada there are four trim levels and pricing will be: S FWD/AWD

It is easy to point and even easier to park. A standout feature is EZ Flex Seating System with Latch And Glide, an industry first second row tip-up seat which allows easy third row access with a child safety seat still installed in the second row. As far as fitting in seven people, there
is 4,463 litres of passenger volume with another 453 litres of cargo space behind the third row 50:50 split/fold rear seat. Another is the Easy Fill Tire Alert that gives a beep of the horn when correct pressure reached. If sound is your thing, Nissan and Bose go back a long way and in the Pathfinder you can order the 13-speaker audio system with Acoustic Waveguide Subwoofer, Tri-Zone Entertainment and Advanced Drive-Assist Display. With the Sirius/XM dialled in, I was
able to enjoyably cover some 300 miles. Using the navigation system, the voice prompts were piped in over the music and there was no lag in the map showing your turn after over shooting because the GPS processor wasn’t fast enough. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is no longer a forgotten wallflower but is ready to reassert itself as a full-size CUV force to be reckoned with.

FIRST LOOK: FORD FUSION SE AWD 2013
■411 ON THE FUSION: In this completely redesigned model, built on an all-new global chassis, Ford has not only knocked it out of the park in terms of styling, but they’ve created a wellpriced, well-crafted sedan that should challenge the best in its class. It will be available with a wide range of four-cylinder engines that include a normally-aspirated 2.5-litre (175 hp, 175 lb/ft of torque), a 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost (178 hp, 184 lb/ft), 2.0litre EcoBoost (240 hp/270 lb/ft) and a hybrid that pairs a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle inline four with an electric motor and weight-saving lithium batteries. There’s even the Fusion Energi – a plug-in hybrid – that will be available early next year. The 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost models, despite the Fusion’s heft (between 1,512 and 1,670 kg), are lively performers. Despite its smaller displacement and lesser numbers, this engine is still peppy. With the advantage of a clutch, you can spool it up quickly, and although it’s no rocket off the line, you’ll have no trouble passing at speed. Inside, there’s an abundance of soft-touch materials, with nicelyfinished edges and upholstery that wouldn’t look out of place in a premium automobile. Panel gaps are extremely tight.

Even the base model (MSRP $22,499) is well outfitted with a decent list of features like air conditioning, power windows, keyless entry, tilt/telescopic steering, and a four-speaker AM/FM/CD/ MP3 audio system with steering wheel controls and SYNC voiceactivated connectivity. And there’s a ton of available driver technologies, such as the second-generation MyFord Touch with SYNC infotainment system, navigation, rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring (with cross traffic alert), lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, active park assist and the fuel-saving stop/start feature. The latter, which comes in at a reasonable $150, is only available with the 1.6-litre engine with autobox. It shuts off the engine when stopped, and seamlessly restarts when you release the brake. Ford claims it will cut fuel consumption and emissions by about 3.5 percent. Fusion’s new, sleeker profile, sweeping character lines, thin roof pillars, slit projector headlamps and wide grille with horizontal chrome strakes, suggest poise and athleticism. It’s a look that is more premium than its predecessor and one of the most handsome in its segment. In the 2013 Fusion, Ford has raised the bar yet again. – Metroland Media

Mercedes-Benz revs up SUVs for 2013 The pulse quickens a little when a driving invitation lists Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport) as the driving venue. Closer inspection reveals that the track is just a staging point for road and trail tests of the latest SUV models from MercedesBenz. But that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be boring. There’s still plenty of excitement to be had, albeit at lower speeds, when Canadian automotive journalists get a
chance to see what’s new for 2013 in Mercedes’ family of our “offroaders�. Now, I slapped those quotation marks around the “offroader� tag because some of these vehicles are more trail competent than others. Most modern SUVs are more about attitude than aptitude, selling the image rather than the reality. Because, frankly, most SUV owners rarely venture off the asphalt further than the over-

But the evolution of sport utility carries on with a convergence of all-condition driving security enhanced by new benchmark levels of luxury and comfort, especially here in a revised 2013 MercedesBenz lineup.
GLK The GLK 350 4MATIC ($44,900) maintains its distinctive, high-top sneaker profile but it ups the power with a new 3.5-litre direct injection CGI V6, making 302 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque. The new engine features ECO start/stop technology that shuts the motor down to eliminate idling (like a hybrid). There are new paint choices for 2013 and interior tweaks include a swap in positions for the turn signal and cruise stalks. A variety of options and packages including AMG treatment are available.

I don’t want to give the game away early, but this was my first and favourite drive of the day. The GLK 350 4MATIC blends all the right ingredients in a nimble, supple and powerful package that is less ponderous that the GL, less ambiguous than the ML and less eccentric than the top-of-the-
line G Class. The GLK seems to resonate with Canadians. Ours is the only market in the world where the GLK outsells the Audi Q5. For 2013, the rear-wheeldrive model has been dropped but a later addition of a new
GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC model will feature the first application of a 2.2-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel in the Canadian lineup, a motor making 190 hp and 361 lb/ft of torque. The GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC ($TBA) will come to dealers this December.

Okay, we’ve stepped a little out of the price progression sequence but the M-Class lineup
G-Class The G-Class, originally designed for military use, supports over 60 armies and was chosen for use by Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. The G’s narrow track and width allows it access to the kind of trails that usually limit admission
to serious bush bashers made by competitors like Jeep and Land Rover. The terrain verifies some of the number crunches on the spec sheet – 21 cm of ground clearance, a fording depth of 60 cm and driving stability at inclined angles of up to 54 per cent, along with sharp angles of approach and departure. The two-model lineup includes the G 550 ($120,900) that we tested offroad, and the pimped-up, more street-oriented G 63 ($149,900). The G 63 replaces the former G 55 and harnesses a 536 hp biturbo 5.5-litre V8 that can hustle the G 63’s more than two and a half tons of mass down the road almost as quick as you can yell “Mein Lieber Gott!� (or in 5.4 seconds from 0-100 km/h). Whether it’s bought for bragging rights or for its potential as a post-Apocalyptic getaway vehicle, the G-Class is in a niche of its own, with the kind of road rarity that is enough incentive for those who can afford it. actually spans a price range of its own with a wide selection of model choices and packages in what is arguably the most carlike SUV in the Mercedes stable. The M-Class lineup got a major overhaul for 2012 with new powertrains, more technologies and other revisions. The exterior look shifted to a more rugged style while somehow staying in touch with the familial cues of sedans like the E-Class. The interior went in the other direction, with new levels of sedan-like refinement. For 2013, Mercedes is stressing the addition of the brand’s across-the-board Collision Prevention Assist and also offers most of the available technologies mentioned above in the GL. The M-Class lineup blends the best of wagon, SUV and minivan qualities in a premium package, and it features the ML 350 4MATIC ($58,900), the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC ($60,400), the ML 550 4MATIC ($76,500) and the ML 63 AMG ($100,900).

GL Mercedes refers to the GL as the S-Class of SUVS. It is bigger and roomier than the GLK and offers ultimate comforts, pulling out all the stops with premium positioning and a wealth of standard and available technologies. The turbo is part of a fourcylinder strategy for the 2013 Malibu with the 2.0-litre joined by a standard 2.5-litre and a specially tuned 2.4-litre that is part of the optional GM e-Assist hybrid system on the Malibu Eco model. The current 2.0-litre uses direct injection, variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbo pumping at 20-psi. But there is more to it than that. The heads use the same metallurgy as the mighty Corvette ZR1. The special aluminum pistons have oil spray cooling. There is a two-stage thermostat and two-stage variabledisplacement oil pump that enhance efficiency. The exhaust is specially configured to reduced back pressure with the bonus of a more throaty sound quality. And wait, there’s still more. Each of the two scrolls on the turbine is fed by a separate exhaust passage (one from cylinders one and four, the other from cylinders two and three) to virtually eliminate turbo lag at low engine speeds thus giving the engine immediate throttle response. With GM’s ubiquitous sixspeed automatic, the engine/ transmission never hunts for a lower gear or higher one when running on cruise control. Besides the engine, Chevrolet has come a long way with its
interiors and the LTZ, being the top-of-the-line, was completely equipped with a host of features. There is not enough room to list them all but you get leather seating, dual-zone climate control, ambient blue interior lighting and remote start not to mention power everything. Also part of the LTZ package is Chevy MyLink with a seven-inch colour touch-screen radio, Bluetooth and USB port. As for as infotainment systems go, the MyLink has a large screen that is not blotted out when hit by direct sun. I was able to dial in my favourite satellite radio stations with no problem but did not mess with the route settings, etc. With its sportier engine, the Malibu LTZ Turbo is also tuned for improved handling. The MacPherson strut front end features dual-path mountings which separate the transfer of spring damper loads to the body for a smoother-feeling ride overall and enhanced stability when cornering. New for the turbo model are internal rebound springs for the front struts that give the Malibu improved body motion control and roll damping in handling manoeuvres. A direct-acting front stabilizer bar gives a sharper and more
immediate feeling to steering inputs. It is mounted to the rear portion of the engine cradle with each end of the bar connected to the front struts. At the rear, the four-link rear suspension includes an upper camber link, two lower links and a trailing link. GM’s Stabilitrak with traction control is standard on all Malibus and modulates the brakes at the individual wheels, reduces power or does both to help the driver remain in control. The new Turbo model should give Chevrolet a big boost in the mid-size sedan segment.

Elantra hatches 2013 GT The Elantra GT replaces the Elantra Touring in the model lineup and adds a great deal more flair to the five-door variant. Using the “Fluidic Sculpture� styling that Hyundai has adopted as a brand, the GT has a European heritage in that it is based on the i30 model sold overseas. It has a shorter wheelbase than the sedan, but the corporate styling is evident with the large hexagonal grille and the dual character lines that flow upward from the front fenders. All Elantra GTs are well outfitted, boasting seven airbags including one for the driver’s knees. The electric power steering features a segment first for Hyundai with the Driver Selectable Steering Mode (DSSM) that provides three steering modes – Comfort, Normal and Sport, accessed by a button on the steering wheel. The front-wheel drive GT is powered by Hyundai’s Nuseries 148 hp, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that is shared across the Elantra lineup. It is available with a six-speed manual or optional sixspeed automatic with Shiftronic manual control. The engine has an aluminum block, resulting in a 30 per cent weight saving or an iron block. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.2/4.9L/100 km city/highway with the manual and 7.3/5.0L/100 km for the automatic. The European-tuned suspension of the GT means it is calibrated more for increased responsiveness and handling, whereas the sedan is tuned in for more comfort. With its hatchback design and fold-flat second-row seats, the Elantra GT has one of the roomiest cabins in the segment. Cargo volume is 651 litres with the rear seats upright and 1,444 litres with the seats down. Adding to the family-friendliness of the GT is the number of convenient stowage and storage features
throughout the cabin. We tested the top-end SE with Tech Package that came loaded with everything the GT can throw at you, including a neat rear view camera hidden behind the Hyundai emblem on the trunk lid. When the shifter is popped into reverse, the emblem tilts out to expose the camera. Cool! At $26,349 the SE with Tech also features leather seats and door trim, seven-inch touch screen navigation screen, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, autodimming rear view mirror, proximity keyless entry with push button start, alloy pedals, 360-watt sound system and mirror mounted turn signal indicators. On the road, the GT feels like much more of a driver’s car than the sedan, largely because of the European tuning, which gravitates to the sportier side of the equation. Inside, wind and road noise is negligible at cruising speed. The car is comfortable, quiet and easy to drive. All in all, the GT is a great family car at a reasonable price. Residents, the CEOs say, should expect more program mergers between hospitals or hospital campuses to create larger, more efficient facilities. The province wants hospitals to jettison some services, including noncomplex surgeries, into the community, and will fund services remaining in hospitals on a per-patient basis, encouraging a larger scale. “The more you do (of one operation), the better you are,” Wright said. TSH has already started to specialize: 16 per cent of its budget this year will come from high volumes in hip and knee joint replacement, cataracts, and treating chronic renal disease. But obstetricians and community members at Birchmount hinted at difficult choices to come by asking Wright about a proposal to merge Maternal Newborn and Child Care services at the Birchmount and General campuses into a single-campus unit in order to save $5 million a year. One in 10 babies born in Greater Toronto each year are delivered at a TSH campus. Agincourt resident Pat Sherman said he’s heard rumours obstetrics at Birchmount “is under the microscope” and could it be cut. “There’s a lot of questions in the community right now.” Obstetrician Dr. Larissa Tam asked Wright if he considers the program an acute-care service each TSH campus should retain, “because I never saw a woman give birth in a clinic.” Wright said no decision has been made on any program, but he believes Maternal Newborn – “whatever site, whatever size” – will be better, and able to provide services the separate sites cannot provide now. Some people voiced frustration at the vague nature of “transformation” they were asked to consider. May Lee, a prominent Scarborough fundraiser, said the public sessions at TSH were more like “a dog and pony show” than a useful process. Dr. Nermean Abdelrazek, another TSH obstetrician, said the area’s Muslim community is “kind of unaware of these meetings” and would appreciate simple explanations of what services will be cut or moved. “They want it point blank, kind of like a bullet form,” she said. “They can’t have it now,” because no one knows, Wright responded. The TSH CEO admitted numbers for budgets are hard to project because the provincial officials “keep changing the rules.”
That uncertainty won’t be helped by this week’s resignation of Premier Dalton McGuinty, which will require a new Ontario Liberal leader and probably a provincial election. Ontario’s rising healthcare costs and its deficit, however, must be

Shan said he thinks proroguing is “problematic,” because it leaves legislation in limbo and people expect MPPs to continue work at the legislature. Most troubling of all, said Chopowick, a former advisor to PC Leader Tim Hudak, is the prorogation is indefinite. Chopowick added that many people are hoping that the legislature is recalled sooner, rather than later.
