Local man honoured for helping to save woman’s life A man who prevented a young woman from jumping off a bridge in Scarborough was among 29 citizens honoured by police for heroic actions this week by the Toronto Police Service.

Rayphal Slade was driving westbound on the Lawrence Avenue overpass at Colonel Danforth Park (near Meadowvale Road) March 21 when he spotted the woman on the north sidewalk climbing onto the railing.

As the woman was about to leap, Slade grabbed her in a bear hug and hung onto her until police arrived. The overpass is about 100 feet over the park. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said the woman had left a note of her intention to end her life. Slade was recognized with a Community Member Award for his “brave actions and willingness to help a member of the

A tribute to Scarborough’s Urban Heroes Our 2014 Urban Heroes

MARK A. CADIZ mcadiz@insidetoronto.com

t was a night of celebration as some of Scarborough’s very best were honoured for their invaluable contributions to their communities on Tuesday night. The Urban Heroes Awards presented by The Scarborough Mirror is an annual gala recognizing community members and grassroots level “heroes” whose personal efforts have made a positive impact. This year, 18 community leaders were honoured in the categories of arts and culture, business, community, education, environment, health and science, and sports. Rob Rogers is the founder of the Toronto Teen Track (3T) Program, a youth leadership program in the Morningside Heights neighbourhood, and he has been running it for nearly 18 years. “The idea is to have the older kids take care of the younger kids through recreation, sports, leadership and social programs. Here, all the kids work together to help keep the younger ones off the streets and safe,” said Rogers, a recipient of

just how rich our community life is,” she said at the Brighton Convention Centre. Mirror managing editor Alan Shackleton said he felt a wonderful sense of pride after hearing their stories. “Scattered throughout this room are some pretty accomplished Scarborough residents,” he said. “This event has always brought forward some terrific community leaders.” One of the youngest urban heroes of the evening was Thilaksion Kumariah, 17, from the Malvern neighbourhood. He was excited about being recognized for his volunteer work. “Over the summer we started a skate park. Many little kids came out and got another extracurricular activity that they can do within the community,” Kumariah said. He has been working

tirelessly to help build a skate park and has engaged youth through skating, including young girls and newcomers to Canada by holding skateboard clinics. “Next year we are planning to incorporate BMX riding to get even more kids involved in new things they have never tried before,” Kumariah said. Tom McGregor, a retired resident, was looking for a hobby and got into what he calls bicycle rescue. “I get them from the curb and repair them, and then I find somebody who really needs a bike who can’t afford it,” McGregor said. “I’d much rather see somebody get the benefit and it’s mostly children, seniors, neighbours who have gotten bikes from us.” When asked why he thought it was important to give back, McGregor recalled a particular time

when he gave a bike to a single mother who was in tears when her daughter was able to get her first bike. “She was new to Canada and struggling…it was very touching and that’s the reason for doing it,” he said. The Elango siblings – Diviya, 22, Deepak and Deepika, both 18 – were inspired by their mother, a registered nurse who works in a retirement home. All three wanted to give back to the community and started the Hand in Hand Project, which started off with young people writing letters to seniors. The initial success sparked a larger initiative. “The idea was to launch a pen pal initiative,” Deepika said. “We are connecting high school students with seniors who will be exchanging letters to each other biweekly.”

To learn more about these Urban Heroes, see the special section in today’s paper.

“Due to technology, people are constantly at home on their devices, but by doing this project we hope to connect the youth with seniors, eventually bringing the community together with old traditions,” Deepak said. Their goal is to connect teenagers to the community outside their homes and to build relationships by sending letters, cards and making personal visits. Rogers said it is a great honour to be recognized, but he’s sure the heroes don’t do it for the recognition. “It is a very difficult job, especially when funding is scarce and we do need help, but in terms of keeping things going this is what I love to do.”

Civic leadership is a critical issue Toronto remains a city with strengths and advantages that others around the world can only emulate. However, the lack of true political vision has disrupted serious progress on key issues such as economic and transit development. Political culture has been fractious and detrimental to building trust in leadership for the city moving forward. All of this means civic leadership has become a key issue in Monday’s municipal election. We had a record number of advance poll votes cast this year. The 161,147 votes cast is far more than ever before at advace polls. We hope that means residents take this election seriously and have taken the time to seriously question candidate platforms. Here are key issues a voter needs to consider: Leadership: Thankfully, there has been no major pre-election alignment between mayoral and council candidates. We need council members who openly fight for the needs and desires of their individual ward – and are not expected to blindly fall into line with mayoral direction. This city needs a leader who can work with council members from the most liberal to the most conservative. We need a mayor who can lead a council that works together – and leaves the cheap shots and uncalled-for language and accusations behind. We need a mayor who speaks in facts – and can competently back up their view. That mayor must expect the same from council members. A mayor must work aggressively and respectfully with provincial and federal governments. A mayor must build a profile on an international level and be respected as an ambassador on behalf of every resident. Transit: It would be hard to find two Torontonians who believe there is a focused plan for our transit future. Confusion, hostility and easily debunked transit plans have ruled four years of discussion. Yet, congestion increases. Transit builds take decades to complete. Meanwhile, the quality of life in Toronto erodes with no clear direction. Economic development: As do most major cities, Toronto suffers from unacceptable unemployment rates and is lacking in opportunity for the socially disadvantaged. We face stiff competition all the time from other lesser communities who woo industrial and retailer developers. If asked what issues were priorities of this past council, would economic development even rise to the surface? Toronto needs a new, unified vision for the future and fast. We believe John Tory is the only candidate who can deliver the unity, the vision and the results the city needs. That said, it’s you who does the voting. Please take the time to study the platform of your mayoral and council candidates. Consider the past four years simply lessons learned, and choose wisely on Monday. column

See you at the polling station on election day

I

’m ready for the election. I mean, really, really, really ready. It seems like the campaign has gone on forever. But I have to admit, I do have one major concern before I cast my ballot next Monday. It’s the same anxiety I have every time I go to vote, too. It’s not the wondering if I qualify part. I know I do. I’m still a Canadian citizen, through and through. Nor do I worry about the age requirement. I’m at least 18 years old. I never get tired of telling people that I’m over 18. I’m a resident of the City of Toronto as well. Yet another biggie in the qualification department. Though I barely recognize the city anymore through all the traffic. But that’s a column for another day. That’s actually a lot of columns for a lot of other days. But back to the matter at hand, the column for this day, my worrying as the big day approaches. It’s not the wondering

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY if I’m eligible part that makes me nervous either. I’ve got the official Voter Information Card that automatically ensures I am an eligible elector. Hey, wait a minute: eligible elector. Does that sounds like a new mega hit reality show, or what? I can just see hear the TV announcer now: “Coming up next, right after the hockey game, Canada’s Sexiest Eligible Elector. Who will be voted out of the booth this week? Sorry. I got sidetracked dreaming of winning an Emmy. Where was I again? Oh yeah, the election. It’s not the actual voting part I’m worried about, either. I’ve got that down pat after all these years. Although I do have to admit, the process still seems rather old-fashioned with all the

technological wizardry at our disposal. I’m also not worried abut trying to figure out where my polling station is located. I don’t have to take out a GPS or go to Google maps for help. It’s just around the corner. A veritable hop, skip, jump and sprained ankle away. Which reminds me, I’d better stick to walking there this year. And no, it’s not the picking of the candidates either that makes me uneasy as I go to vote. I make up my mind who I’m voting for long before I go in. You have no choice but to do that. With the seemingly endless list of candidates’ names on the ballots you have to know in advance or you’d never get through them all. Nope, it’s the proving who I am part that concerns me. When I get to the desk in the polling station, somebody whom I’ve never met and who has never met me asks for some identification to prove I actually am me. The only photo I can

provide is on my driver’s license, which is curious, because it’s a picture that even I don’t recognize. Not that it matters, because it doesn’t say you need a picture with your ID. All you need in addition to your Voter Information Card is identification showing your name and qualifying Toronto address such as a cancelled personalized cheque, income tax assessment notice or an insurance policy, for example. But even though I’m apprehensive, I’ll be there Monday. Flashing said driver’s license, complete with photo, which, incidentally, looks back at me just as quizzically as I look at it. Good thing the unfamiliar guy in the picture is not running the polling station. If he was in charge, I’d never get in. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. Fridges and stoves were flowing down the river To the editor: Re: ‘Hurricane Hazel remembered 60 years later’, Oct. 9, The Mirror. Like Madeleine McDowell I also lived on Humbercrest Boulevard on the east side. In 1954 I was in Grade 9 at Runnymede Collegiate and that stormy Friday I was ready to go to the movies with my friends but my mother said a definite “NO”. When I looked outside on Humbercrest the wind and the water came down so hard you could not see the other side of the street. The noise was so loud from the wind it was like being in a wind tunnel almost all night long. After the storm, Dundas Street West from Scarlett Road to Prince Edward Drive was closed to automobile traffic until the bridge structure could be evaluated by the city engineers. The Bloor Street bridge over the Humber

was also closed for the same reason. On Sunday, my father and I walked across Dundas to the middle of the Dundas bridge and looked down at the river. Most of the old, narrow, one-lane bridge had been washed away and the water was 40 feet up the new bridge’s support pillars. It was moving very fast with multiple kinds

of debris: fridges, stoves, chairs, trees and tires were some of the things we could distinguish. I remember for many years afterward you could see how high the water had been because the pillars of the bridge had been scoured clean by the action of the water. On the west side of the river down the dirt road there had been a small house and a hot dog and

hamburger stand owned by people named Rhodes. Everything the family had was washed away including the house and hamburger hut. The other thing I remember about the hurricane is that there was a mannequin manufacturer at Dundas and Gooch in the 1940s and ’50s, across from the Dayton Rubber Factory. One of the young boys

refrigerators caught up in the branches. On the Monday and Tuesday after the storm many of the senior boys at Runnymede Collegiate left school to help the firemen and other rescuers look for the bodies of people at East Drive and Scarlett Road. I still see some of those men and they remember those days very vividly. Donna Firman

and living at Lawrence and Little avenues and was quite close to the Humber River. Back in the day we knew all the local policemen as they came to our house to use the phone. I saw our tennis club go floating down the river. I was only 19 at the time but graduated from Weston

Collegiate and so I volunteered at the Weston Police Station, answering their phone. In addition to seeing the club house float away, I saw two firemen in a row boat going round and round in a flood of water at our intersection. A lot of damage was done at that time 60 years

ago. Although there are many sad memories, it is also nice to remember the many nice folks and policemen we had back in the day. Thank you for the chance to reminisce. Jean Macdonell

Chow the choice for this columnist It is something of a cliché to say a municipal election marks a cross-roads for a city. But after four years of the Ford family’s wild reign at Toronto City Hall, any kind of road seems a relief. Based on the polls, a small majority of voters believes themselves to have found that road in the form of John Tory. Fiscally conservative, gracious of manner and civically engaged, the former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, business executive and talk show host has presented himself as an agreeable antidote to the melodrama at City Hall. Tory would follow the rules. He would maintain cordial relationships on council and with other levels of government. His history of volunteer work on matters of social inclusion make it clear he could be expected to govern from a fiscally conservative centre. Elements of his platform, however, make him maddeningly difficult to

push to return the costly Scarborough subway to its provincially funded light rail predecessor, and put the billion dollars in tax revenue slated for the subway toward a necessary but unfunded downtown relief line. Some aspects of Chow’s platform might not come off as planned – notably, her plans to increase bus service and build affordable housing. But these failures would leave Toronto in a status quo, not in ruinous debt. Chow may have proven to be an inexpert campaigner and an often tenuous debater. But on Oct. 27, the debating and campaigning is over for nearly four years. And Chow’s work as a city councillor and Member of Parliament has demonstrated an ability to lead allies and parlay with opponents that Toronto’s next mayor will need in spades. By those measures, Chow is the best choice on Oct. 27.

david nickle the city endorse. Key among these is the $8-billion (or so) SmartTrack surface rail plan that has been criticized for its vague and risky tax increment financing plan. With that said, SmartTrack is an improvement on the plan put forward first by Mayor Rob Ford and then his brother Doug, to pursue an unsupportable plan to build 32 kilometres of subway and kill the remaining planned light rail lines. Which brings us to Olivia Chow. For those voting strategically, third-place Chow seems a terrible bet. Yet she offers the most fiscally conservative and civically constructive platform in the race. Chow is promising tax increases marginally higher than Tory’s, and a land transfer tax premium for $2-million-plus real estate transactions. But she would

KILL IT OR KEEP IT?

FATE OF SHEPPARD EAST LRT HINGES ON MUNICIPAL ELECTION

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The Sheppard East Light Rail line is already a phantom: After Rob Ford killed it, the project rose again, backed by city council and a panel of experts. Now the 13-kilometre surface train route promised to the people of the north Scarborough is in danger of dying again soon after next week’s municipal election. Doug Ford, if he become’s Toronto’s mayor, will try to kill it. John Tory supports completing the still-delayed $1.1-billion project, but if he wins, Scarborough councillors will attempt to get rid of it anyway. The plot against the LRT line is being quietly led by Norm Kelly, Toronto’s deputy mayor, who hasn’t talked to Tory about his plans. “We’ve not had a tete-a-tete on this matter,” Kelly said in an interview, suggesting it may not matter if Tory, as mayor, chooses to fight for the LRT line or another planned for Finch Avenue West. “The last chat I had with John, I tried to get across to him the nature of political life at Toronto council,” where members aren’t bound by caucus discipline, and a mayor’s position on issues “will be tested just like that of any other member,” Kelly said. Scarborough councillors, through a vote in 2015, hope to convince the province to shelve the Sheppard LRT, much as they got Ontario’s government last year to scrap the LRT line it had planned to build from Kennedy station in favour of a Bloor-Danforth subway extension. Kelly said he’s talked to Liberal MPPs in Scarborough about approaching Premier Kathleen Wynne after a city council vote, and said they seem to be on board. “I want them collectively

Staff file photo/RAHUL GUPTA

Placard-brandishing members of the Scarborough Subway Action Coalition held a demonstration last May at the intersection of Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue in support of a subway for Sheppard. The group, wants to replace a fully funded 13-kilometre light rail route planned for Sheppard, to run between Don Mills subway station to east of Morningside Avenue, with a subway.

to join me in making another request of the premier to either commit to a subway (on Sheppard East), or delay funding of an LRT.” SUBWAY CHAMPIONS Kelly’s allies include Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong who, after facing a Progressive Conservative election opponent campaigning on the issue, branded herself a “champion” for extending the Sheppard subway to McCowan Road. “As your MPP I have listened to the community, and heard that the vast majority of you want a subway, and that is what I will continue to work for,” Wong told supporters in June, promising to collaborate with Kelly and other councillors so that a decision to build a Sheppard extension would not be “forced on the local community.” This sidesteps the fact Toronto council reinstated the LRT project in 2012,

when it was judged the best option for Sheppard East by an arms-length panel after public debate. “The premier has consistently said we respect the lower-tier government, and right now council has said they want the LRT,” Wong said on Friday, also conceding some Scarborough councillors don’t support the subway option. Raymond Cho, however, said last week he thinks most Scarborough councillors will vote to reject the LRT – which would have been carrying passengers from Don Mills to east of Morningside Avenue already, had it not been shelved in 2010 – even if Tory wins. Once a supporter of the LRT line himself, Cho, incumbent councillor for ScarboroughRouge River Ward 42 at the east end of the route, said he’s facing constituents repeating the Ford brother’s “Subways, subways, subways” slogan, including many convinced a subway extension is coming

because the Fords promised one. “I say, ‘I want a subway on Sheppard too,’” said Cho, adding, “I will try to convince John Tory too,” should Tory become mayor. Other north Scarborough council candidates – notably Jim Karygiannis, the former Scarborough-Agincourt MP running to replace the retiring Mike Del Grande – are Sheppard subway extension supporters, and vocal residents holding pro-subway signs attended an Agincourt transit forum last month featuring Kelly, Wong and Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca. LRT SUPPORT Chin Lee, another incumbent councillor along the route, said he’s supporting the LRT line “as of this moment,” though it isn’t shown on his campaign website’s map depicting what Toronto’s transit system will look like when

planned projects are complete. The Sheppard subway campaign is “driven by a few people in the area” though they are the “loudest voices,” said Lee, who doesn’t think subway backers, given low ridership projections, can put together a convincing case. That, he said, could mean money promised to north Scarborough for rapid transit will simply evaporate if the province chooses the “delay” option, and “I will not give away my $1.1 billion on an empty promise.” Lee, however, said he’s willing to assign the money temporarily to help finance Tory’s SmartTrack plan, which would improve rail service in his ward, though doing this might also delay the LRT project. “I’m willing to go back to the people and ask them,” he said. Work on the LRT line is set

to begin in 2017 and end in 2021. Backers of a Sheppard subway extension – ranked in priority below a future downtown relief subway line even by Doug Ford - weren’t able to say how would be paid for or when it could be built. “I’m looking forward to an informed debate, and all these questions will be answered,” said Kelly, arguing, much as the Fords have, that Toronto needs a world-class subway system to compete against other cities. “You govern on behalf of the future,” said Kelly, who dismissed the expert panel as being “loaded on the other side,” and said an expanded subway network would help people reach Scarborough Town Centre and Toronto’s other suburban hubs. “When you do that, you give every part of the city a chance to grow.” Cho suggested a special savings bond, a lottery and a one cent increase in gasoline tax in the Greater Toronto area could raise money for transit projects there. Kelly and Wong, however, both acknowledged many residents who spoke to them about the issue would be satisfied to see the Sheppard East LRT die, even if no subway extension is ever built. In campaign appearances, the Fords have stressed the inconvenience LRTs present to drivers and that building “nothing at all” is preferable. Merchants along the LRT route aren’t necessarily prosubway, but many are worried about the lack of left-turn lanes affecting business after it’s built, said Ernie McCullough, executive director of the Sheppard East Village Business Improvement Area. A member of council’s expert panel, McCullough said he thinks his organization’s business owners need to hear realistic plans next year for a subway option which include how to pay for it.

finds fault with BUS bike racks wMinistry

rahul gupta

A recent Ontario Ministry of Labour ruling means cyclists for the time being cannot make use of the bike racks found on most TTC buses. The Ministry ordered the TTC to lock the bike racks found on the front of its Orion VII and Nova articulated buses – which make up the majority of the fleet – because of sight line concerns when the racks are full. Until the issue is resolved, the TTC will allow bikes on board its buses, if there’s enough room.

TO in TRANSIT the TTC blamed on an interim signaling system put in place by Waterfront Toronto. Waterfront Toronto, which is co-ordinating a wholesale renovation of Queen’s Quay including the installation of a modern set of transitpriority signals, promised to tweak the system by the end of the week to help the streetcars run smoother. return HITS TECHNICAL ISSUES wSTREETCAR

In the wake of flooding last week, the city is urging residents to do a better job ensuring loose piles of leaves don’t get onto the streets. Improper disposal of leave and debris was identified as a key culprit for flooding on St. Clair Avenue West after a freak thunderstorm last Thursday evening that temporarily suspended streetcar service.

The return of streetcar service to Queen’s Quay last week did not come without some technical issues. Following the resumption of both the 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina services Sunday, Oct. 12 on the street’s newly built transit rightof-way, riders complained of excessive wait times and vehicle bunching, which

GO bus passengers have the opportunity to provide feedback on the quality of their rides and maybe win a travel voucher in the process. From now until Tuesday, Nov. 18 GO riders can make their feelings about bus service known by filling out an online survey. Kitchens, Bathrooms and Plumbing Your house isn’t just a house. It’s your home. It’s where you raise your family; your refuge away from the world. You take pride in your home and ensure it is comfortable and inviting. Crystal Bath understands this. Being a truly family owned and operated business, Crystal Bath takes the same pride in their quality workmanship, as you do in your home. Husband and wife team, Mario and Ann Scala, are President and Vice president of Crystal Bath. Mario has been a licensed tiler since the age of 17 and Ann has a background in sales. Almost 21 years ago in 1991, Mario and Ann embarked on creating their own kitchen and bathroomrenovationbusiness and haven’t looked back. To make the family-owned and operated story complete, Mario and Ann’s son, Chris, recently joined the business as a licensed plumber. Crystal Bath specializes in complete and partial kitchen and bathroom renovations and ensure that not only are all their employees licensed

and insured but they have been practicing their trade for a minimum of 10 years. This way, Crystal Bath can hire the best tradesmen and go out of their way to keep them. “Everyone is really experienced,” explains Ann. “We keep our people. Our employees are qualified and happy.” Whether it is tiling, painting or electrical work, you can be assured that all jobs completed by the Crystal Bath team are of superior quality. They have also recently added licensed plumbing services to better accommodate all their customers’ needs. Their plumbing vehicles are available seven days a week and can be dispatched for any emergency situation. The greatest testament to any company is word of mouth referrals and repeat customers. This is how Crystal Bath has successfully grown their business. Along with client testimonials, Crystal Bath has been recognized for the last ten years as the best in kitchen

and bathroom renovations by readers of the Scarborough Mirror newspaper. Their workmanship is guaranteed to be completed on-time and on-budget. The Crystal Bath team will provide professional advice on design and function, whether it is of a contemporary or traditional design. Their team will work with you to provide the best solutions to accommodate your needs and budget. Crystal Bath accommodates all homeowners, including first time owners, but they also have a special understanding of the aging population and their special needs. They love to take on projects like retro-fitting bathrooms with amenities such as walk in bathtubs and showers. “We are fair with seniors,” says Ann. “We take care of the older generation.” For your at home free kitchen and bathroom quotation call Crystal Bath at 416-261-6199 or go to www.crystalbath.ca for more information.

Author explores ABC’s of Toronto HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The idea for Paul Covello’s children’s book, Toronto ABC, stemmed from a video project he wanted to submit for the Toronto Underground Film Festival (TUFF). It consisted of a 30-second clip of different parts of the city. “I showed it to some people and they all said it should be a book,” Covello said. “I didn’t think about that at all.” It didn’t take long for the Toronto resident to take the suggestions to heart; a year later, he created Toronto ABC. Now in major bookstores, the alphabet book helps chil-

dren learn their ABCs through identifying the letters with different aspects and attractions around the city. “Because it’s an alphabet book, I knew right off the bat which places I wanted in it,” Covello said. “I knew I wanted to do Casa Loma, High Park, that one shows the seasons, Kensington Market was really fun to do...There’s plenty of places to choose from that’s really unique to Toronto.” Other locations in the book include the Junction, the Waterfront, the AGO and Toronto islands. A l l t h e i m a g e s w e re drawn by hand by Covello, then scanned and filled in with Illustrator. The process

allows him to easily go back and make changes and offer a clean, crisp and bold image, he said. Illustrating has always been his passion, despite having a masters in English from the University of Ottawa. While he currently works as a graphic designer for HarperCollins, his said passion lies in illustration, which he’s been doing on the side for years. “It was a fun project because I got to combine both graphic design and illustration,” he said. “If you’re really passionate about something, you’ll always keep it around.”

Correction A story that appeared on page 3 of the Sept. 18 edition of The Scarborough Mirror requires correction. In the article ‘Big crowd takes in Ward 44 council debate’, a candidate’s position on cutting wages to police was inaccurately reported.

Refreshments will be provided and parking passes will be available.

In fact, Richard Ross dismissed another candidate’s suggestion on ways to replace land transfer tax funding, and Ross does not agree that cutting wages from the police service was the answer. The Mirror regrets the error.

K

arin Eaton is the executive director of Mural Routes, which has been beautifying Scarborough with painted murals on mostly bare brick and concrete walls for the past two decades. Along with creating art in outdoor locations from Highland Creek to Birch Cliff and beyond, Mural Routes has also inspired scores of

young artists in the community. As well as creating high quality wall art, Mural Routes works with the communities to create murals that are reflective of or pay tribute to the area’s history. Unique in Canada, Mural Routes is a not-for-profit, member-based group, which is dedicated to the creation, development and promotion of public wall art. The group’s

success with a number of well-known murals in Scarborough, including the streetcar and cow mural in the Kingston Road and St. Clair Avenue area, has led it to be one of the leading organizations in the country when it comes to the promotion and creation of mural art. They have also become the ‘go to’ source for mural information across Canada.

Along with running Dance Caribe, Pascall has also worked with both the Toronto public and Catholic school boards to present dance programs to local students.

Pascall is always generous with his time and resources to provide dance instruction to children and youth at a nominal cost. Along with community events, dancers from the company represented Ontario at the Vancouver winter Olympics. The company’s goals include the promotion of healthy lifestyles and tolerance.

Business Jason Miller and the One More Wear Foundation Helping young people look good, feel confident

S

carborough resident Jason Miller helped create the One More Wear Foundation to help at-risk youth achieve their artistic, academic and employment goals by providing them with professional clothing and other attire. Miller was inspired to create the foundation along with his brother Andrew and teacher David Delay. Miller learned through personal experience the impact and need for such a service. The foundation has helped numerous local youth take steps toward a brighter future by making sure they look good and feel confident. One More Wear provides professional clothing for youth in need. It helps make sure they are dressed well, looking good and ready to apply for or work at jobs requiring professional attire. The One More Wear Foundation also provides information for young people on the roles the media can play on bodyimage issues and on how to build self esteem.

oopan and Seema David came to Canada in 2007 and encountered many challenges during their transitional period of integrating into Canadian life. It was through this period that the Davids

wanted to start a free soup kitchen because many families they met with young children struggled to meet the most basic needs during the transitional period. Now the Davids operate the 5N2 Soup Kitchen serving those

who struggle to make ends meet. Since they opened in 2013 they have expanded to four locations in Scarborough serving hundreds of marginalized families, youth and newcomers with nutritious meals and soups every day.

oul-R Damon Maraj grew up in Scarborough and works as a community worker and developer. Over the last decade he has been giving back to different communities throughout the city, but mainly focuses on Scarborough neighbourhoods. Recently he founded a non-profit grassroots organization called IMPACT’ n Communities which is dedicated to improving communities

across the Greater Toronto Area. Through his volunteer work he has developed several positive programs which have engaged youth, children and adults. IMPACT’ n Communities is a 100 per cent volunteer driven organization. It provides drop-in services, sports, arts and music and leadership training programs at two locations in the KingstonGalloway-Orton Park and Dazig neighbourhoods of

east Scarborough. The organization says the goal of its programs and services are geared to support youth residents and their families that have been stricken by the ill effects of social injustice and other adverse social detriments on their quality of life. Through his work with IMPACT’ n Communities, Maraj aims to create change in neighbourhoods in need through inspirational, meaningful and positive actions.

jeev Bhatia began working with the East Scarborough Storefront four years ago as a volunteer. Since that time, he has played a key role with the Lawrence Avenue organization as it designed its EcoHub resource centre and Sky-O-Swale sports court. As part of Storefront’s community design initiative, Bhatia helped local

residents design a resource centre that not only served the needs of the KingstonGalloway-Orton Park community but was also environmentally friendly. His leadership with the Community Design Initiative for the Eco-Hub and Sky-O-Swale were especially inspiring to youth in the area, said Scarborough-Guildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter, who

nominated Bhatia for the Scarborough Urban Hero Award in the Environment category. “This initiative was focused to engage the youth not only through physical context, but also increase their economic, social, cultural, and environmental knowledge,” said Hunter of Bhatia’s work on the design in her nomination.

lvin Fischer has been making a difference in the Thomson Park and Birkdale Creek Park area for years by helping to keep the areas free from litter. On his daily walk, Fischer, who recently turned 90, makes a habit of picking up garbage and disposing of it properly. He tackled the smallest bits of litter to arranging the removal of dumped construction materials and other large items. His actions have also inspired other residents in the area to help keep the parks clean and to look out for the health of the environment. “He inspires people big time,” said David J. Magill, who nominated Fischer for a Scarborough Urban Hero Award in the Environment category. Magill said Fischer’s dedication has inspired him and his wife to take a garbage bag with them to the park once a day when they walk their dogs. People who visit the local parks often comment on how clean the parks are, and a large part of the credit for that goes to Fischer and his dedication to the environment, said Magill.

S

iblings Diviya, Deepika and Deepak Elango started the Hand in Hand Project to help seniors living in an apartment complex in the Eglinton Avenue East area of Scarborough. The program’s main focus is to improve the mental well-being of seniors by building intergenerational relationships. Bonds between the seniors and younger gen-

erations are built through initiatives such as sending letters, cards, messages and through personal visits. Along with benefitting the seniors by keeping them active and engaged, and letting them know that others care about them, the Hand in Hand Project also has many benefits for its younger members. “It gets kids listening to those from older generations, and gets kids out of the house

and into the community,” Deepak said. Bridging the generation gap and paying tribute to older generations is a key part of the Hand in Hand Project. It was inspired by the Elango siblings who noticed many immigrant families in the area did not have regular access to their grandparents or grandchildren. “It’s like caring for your own family by helping others,” Diviya said.

the 3T program himself after he stopped receiving grants from the city. “The idea is to have the older kids take care of the younger kids through recreation, sports, leadership and social programs. Here, all the kids work together to help keep the younger ones off the streets and safe,” Rogers said. Though finding funding for the program is sometimes a struggle, Rogers said it is a labour of love. A key for the community, he added, is a recreation centre for Morningside Heights youth as the one in Malvern is too far away to travel to.

He also helped lead the planning for the Malvern Skateboard Festival where he received a grant from the Laidlaw Foundation to help fund the competition. Business helps connect homeowners/production companies FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Alex Kolodkin was working on his undergrad degree in radio and television arts when he realized just how hard it was to find shooting locations. After using the kitchen of his mom’s friend, the North York resident thought there must be a better way to go about this.

After finishing grad school, Kolodkin took a year to see if his idea of creating a site for homeowners to list their properties to production companies for a fee would take off. Within eight months, Set Scouter Inc. had its first client. Within nine months, the company listed two employees. Now, a year after launching, Set Scouter employs seven

people and has several hundred home listings for rent. In the past, film companies would hire a location scout to find suitable spots for shooting, Kolodkin said. If the scout didn’t have an existing relationship with certain homeowners, they would go around different neighbourhoods and literally knock on doors to see if the owner was amenable.

INDOOR HOUSE LEAGUE SOCCER REGISTRATIONS Last In-Person Registrations Register early, space is limited Saturday, October 25th Golden Mile Mall 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Co-ed Groups - born 1997 to 2010 and Women’s Recreation League

With Set Scouter, homeowners list their place for free, write a description, post photos and set rental prices, which is usually in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, Kolodkin said, adding his company specializes in one-day shoots. “We are making the process as frictionless as possible,” he said. Most shoots run from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and involves an eight- to 12-person crew, a truck and minimal equipment. Homeowners can choose whether to be home during shooting and can also place restrictions, such as limiting work to only a certain part of the home. “We had a Jewish homeowner who kept the house kosher and didn’t want pork products in the home, and didn’t want bedrooms used,” Kolodkin said. “The producers are respectful. Some homeowners will say they are comfortable with using their kitchen or living room, but not the bedrooms, and that’s OK. Our productions

use the existing furniture in the homes, but maybe they’ll move a lamp or a coffee table. We call it the new era of production.” Average family homes As for the type of properties producers are looking for, Kolodkin said average family homes are the No. 1 seller, followed by larger upscale houses and then condos. Though Set Scouter lists homes all over the GTA, North York seems to be a hot spot for productions, he said, adding the homes are “so beautiful” in that neck of the city. Companies typically seeking Set Scouter’s services are shooting commercials or music videos, and the odd short film, he said. Production companies must be fully insured. Once a location is booked, productions are required to provided insurance documentation and co-insurable certificates on locations. Certificates are collected by Set Scouter and

given to homeowners, in addition to security deposits. A $40 deposit is charged to the producer every time a viewing – a scout – is confirmed by the homeowner. Once confirmed, the homeowner’s personal information, such as address, is released. Set Scouter takes 15 per cent on all booking fees, and homeowners are paid 48 hours after a space rental is complete. “Set Scouter has been a very professional organization to work with,” said resident Shari Wert. “They make the process of renting your house to a production company for a shoot so easy. ...Within a couple of months I received inquiries and had booked a commercial shoot in my living room. I have booked several other shoots in the last few months and it has been interesting and easy.”

ADVERTORIAL

Teen driving: Take the responsible road While an RBC Insurance survey1 shows that 9 in 10 parents rate their teens as fairly good drivers, many teenagers still fall prey to common driving misconceptions. “Being a teenage driver isn’t easy. You’re developing a new skill and learning the rules of the road, and because of this, are more likely to fall victim to myths,” explains Natalie Dupuis, Senior Product Manager, Auto, RBC Insurance. “The consequences of making a mistake on the road can have serious ramifications, including the impact to your pocketbook, with teens in an accident seeing substantial increases in premiums upwards of 50%. However, knowing what types of mistakes you’re most likely to commit can help teens make the right driving decisions.” While a number of these activities are already illegal, still many dangerous driving misconceptions persist. To help set the record straight, RBC Insurance debunks the three most common driving misconceptions among teens: Myth: “I can safely text or talk on my phone while driving.” Fact: Cell phones are a significant visual and cognitive distraction for drivers, with average “eyes off the road” times that increase the risk of collision considerably. Drivers engaged in text messaging on a cell phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash event than non-distracted drivers.2 Myth: “I’ve only had one drink so I’m fine to drive.” Fact: Any amount of alcohol impairs driving and increases the risk of collision. Even one drink can cloud your thinking, dim your vision and slow your reflexes.

Alcohol also affects your attention span, alertness and coordination. A driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.10% is 50 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver with no blood alcohol content.3 Myth: “Driving under the influence of cannabis is not as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol.” Fact: Your driving ability can be impaired by pot just as much as it can be impaired by alcohol, as both can impact your ability to concentrate and lower your reaction time. In fact, drivers between 16 and 24 years old are equally split between drinking-driver fatalities (27.6%) and drug-positive driver fatalities (26.9%).4 To learn more, visit www.rbcinsurance.com/ insuranceneeds/safety-tips-for-teenage-drivers.html 2012 RBC Parent and Teen Driving Study. Have your say about The Scarborough Hospital at an engagement session The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) invites residents to a Community Engagement Session Thursday, Oct. 23 as part of its planning process to “renew strategic and clinical directions plans.” The planning process has led TSH to connect with staff, physicians, the TSH Foundation, volunteers, patients, partners and community groups. TSH said its community outreach will help “develop new opportunities” for the hospital. “We want to hear from as many people as possible,” said Robert Biron, president and CEO, TSH, in a press release. “Everyone’s input is valuable and we will be taking these insights and feedback into consideration as we develop our strategic plan, which will shape this hospital’s future for the next three to five years.” The new planning pro-

cess, in cooperation with stakeholders and community members, comes after an effective strategic plan launched in 2009. In a press release, TSH said it was an “exceptionally important” roadmap. Two years after, the TSH launched its Clinical Action Plan (CAP) to identify investment priorities based on the needs of the community. Since 2009, its communityinvolved plans have led to exceptional outcomes, TSH said. These include an

Exemplary Status rating from Accreditation Canada in 2013, the lowest overall emergency wait times among hospitals in the GTA and a number of awards from the Ontario Hospital Association. “We have had many successes at TSH and these have only been possible by a collective effort,” Biron said. “It is this collaborative spirit that will define our approach and solutions for the future.” TSH has two hospital campuses, Birchmount and General. It is also a regional centre for dialysis and affiliated with the University of Toronto. The community engagement session is tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scarborough Hospital General Campus in the Lee Family Auditorium, 3050 Lawrence Ave. E.

Torchbearers sought for Pan Am Games

Three thousand people are needed to carry the flame to Toronto’s Pan Am Games. For 41 days next year, the torch will visit five cities outside Ontario and 130 communities in the province before a cauldron for the games is lit in downtown Toronto on July 10. Chris Hadfield, a former fighter pilot and International Space Station commander – he’s seen the Americas from space thousands of times – said the games will challenge young people to push themselves to the edge of their capabilities. Torchbearers must be at least 13 years old when the relay begins. They can register online at TORONTO2015.org/torch-relay or at the mall until stores close there this Sunday, Oct. 5. Some of the 3,000 bearers of the flame – to be lit at an Aztec ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico – will be chosen by communities on the route or games stakeholders. Some 7,500 athletes and 250,000 visitors are expected at Toronto’s Pan American and Parapan Am Games, which start 40 weeks from now. Tickets start at $20, and there are discounts for seniors and children.

Women’s College Hospital marks expansion milestone JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Phase two of the ongoing redevelopment of Women’s College Hospital reached an important milestone with the official topping off of the building. The final beam was placed at

the building’s highest point at 76 Grenville Street on Mondaywith construction expected to be substantially completed by September of next year. The first phase of the redeveloped hospital has been up and running as an ambulatory care facility since last spring, providing outpatient

Soirée portes ouvertes Open House

services, day surgeries and more. The second phase will enhance its treatment facilities but will serve primarily as an administrative and education space. “That’s the space where we’ll welcome patients into the hospital,” said Women’s College Hospital president and CEO Marilyn Emery.

“There will also be an auditorium that seats about 150, retail space and full underground parking.” It will also allow the hospital’s research institute to move under the same roof as the hospital’s other services for the first time ever. The institute is currently located nearby on Bay Street, but the move will allow for easier collaboration between researchers and the hospital’s clinical team. Most notable in the second phase of the building will be Women’s College’s distinctive pink cube. That will serve as a meeting space enclosed in pink windows, which is expected to be put in place at some point in November. “That will really be something that gives the building an iconic presence,” Emery said. Trees will be planted atop the pink cube, while a green roof will be adjacent to the space, allowing hospital staff, patients and visitors a place to relax. The green roof will not be the only open space available to hospital visitors. The front of the building will also feature a large green space, with Emery noting space will be available should the hospital need to expand in the future. “We don’t have any plans to expand, but it’s there for us,” she

said. “We just like having that green space available.” Women’s College Hospital’s makeover has helped the facility switch from a conventional health care provider – albeit one that focuses strictly on women’s health – to a newer care model in which there are no inpatient beds and maximum effort is given toward holistic care in a bid to keep patients out of the hospital. Patient self-care is emphasized, and the hospital is also making waves in its treatment of marginalized women, many of whom face barriers or uncertainty when being treated under the conventional health care system. “It’s a future that is uncompromisingly patient-centered,” Emery said. “It’s a hospital designed to keep people out of the hospital.” The redevelopment has also helped the hospital increase its patient load, serving more women in a quicker, more efficient manner. The hospital has essentially doubled the size of its acute ambulatory care department, added 16 new gynecological examination rooms and streamlined its departments.

hundreds of zombified Torontonians walking along Queen, Yonge and College streets and University Avenue at 3 p.m., returning to Nathan Phillips Square at 5:30. Concerts, costume contests and more will follow. For more information, visit www.torontozombiewalk.ca

Voters flock to city’s advance polling stations Early-bird voters flocked to the polls last week, setting a record for advance poll turnout in Toronto municipal elections. A total of 161,147 people turned out to vote over the past week, more than double the 77,391 people who cast an early vote in 2010. In addition to a robust get-out-the-vote effort by mayoral campaign teams and greater voter interest sparked by a range of controversy stemming from the mayor’s office, the high turnout might

be explained by a larger number of polling stations. This year, the city operated a polling station in each ward, allowing voters to easily cast a ballot in advance of the Oct. 27 election day. According to city statistics, the highest level of voter turnout was in Ward 22 (St. Paul’s), where 6,037 attended to cast their ballot. Voter turnout was also high in southern Etobicoke, south-eastern Scarborough, downtown Toronto and south-central

North York. City clerk Ulli Watkiss was pleased with the numbers: “We hope this trend continues into election day, and encourage all eligible electors to come out and vote on Oct. 27,” she said in a news release. ENCOURAGES VOTERS ◗‘MYFIRSTTIMETO’

Some people aren’t so young when they do it for the first time, but Toronto social agencies want the abstainers to know how voting makes people feel. MyFirstTimeTO, which

launched this week, encourages people to post videos to Facebook telling the story of the first time they voted. The page’s humour – the implied comparison in some voters’ videos with a first sexual experience – may get old fast for some, but the significance of voting comes across. “You feel important in this country,” one man says in his testament.

A woman says in her home country, to go out to vote is to risk violence. “I overcame that fear,” she adds. “I wanted my freedom.” More can be posted to www.facebook.com/ myfirsttimeTO “If you’re feeling in a truly confessional mode, take one minute and tell us about your first time,” said John Campey of the Social Planning Council of Toronto, which set up the page with Toronto Neighbourhood Centres. Campey said there’s

not enough education in schools about voting and the video project is a chance to demystify the process, particularly for young people and newcomers to Canada. Another woman who posted a video suggests her first time voting was a bit of an anti-climax. “I had built it up in my mind so that it was so huge,” however, it wasn’t, she says.
