Colorado Springs hosted an Olympic Celebration last Friday night to commemorate the start of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. UCCS was heavily represented by students, student-athletes and alumni. The event was run by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation (frequently referred to as Sports Corp.) in tandem with the City of Colorado Springs, the Downtown Development Authority and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Attractions at the event included snowmobile jumpers, live music, a showing of the opening ceremonies and a torch lighting ceremony amongst other events. “This event is great, it’s a community awareness-type event, it allows the NGB’s (National Governing Bodies) to come together and celebrate summer and winter Olympic events,” said Mike Lukken,

to us.” According to Ratz, eight sport management students have been involved for around the last three months, and are “involved in oversight and planning in their specific zone.” In addition, there are around a dozen other sport management students involved in different roles. Colorado Springs houses the headquarters for U.S. Olympic Committee as well for 25 national sport governing bodies. This proximity allows the program to speak directly with the governing bodies, to host interns and “gives our program a unique niche,” said Ratz. “They know that we’re a great resource for them to reach out to. They know our students are credible, educated, and ready to help.” One student running a portion of the event is Laura Roberts, senior sport management major. She is the event manager for the mile-long Downtown Dash Glow Run. Roberts interned in the fall for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with Sports Corp. She explained her role for the run is simple.
