Republic Act DEATH THE SEARCHER

EDITORIAL BOARD Reijandro Gonzales Editor-in-Chief Jean Mariez Tolentino Associate Editor Joana Mae De Jesus Managing Editor crime. Executing a human person does not contribute to any of these goals of justice. Neither can it be argued that the supreme penalty is necessary to vindicate a legal order. In fact, it is a weak and retrogressive legal order that calls for the execution of offenders for its vindication!” Death penalty, as Villegas described it, was “cruel and inhumane” for it yields too much anxiety and psychological distress to the families of the convicted, as well as the impact of the societal stigma it left. The aim of any bill, act or law is the establishment of justice. But to have death as a penalty to a crime is a serious issue. We are very much aware that the country’s justice system is far behind perfection and therefore liable to error. What’s alarming here is that some of those who have the power to bestow this punishment, are open to the tendency of getting biased, be manipulated by bribes and submit to doing decisions that aren’t noble . Life is not something you can readily mend or brought back when mistakenly seized. To execute someone who’s not duly guilty of a crime is never different from murder itself. So how efficient would it be to have death penalty as a form of justification? How sure are we that only those solely guilty will be punished? And how sure are we that every single individual under the same degree of offense will be charged fairly? It doesn’t really mean that the absence of a death penalty in our system is what makes the offenders fearless to do crimes. Life imprisonment is never a lesser punishment than death. To be put inside a four-cornered, filthy cell, without the presence of the people dear to you, and being haunted by your conscience for the rest of your life is already an emotional death

you were sentenced to face each single moment of your life. It is never easy to have a loved one lost through a brutal murdering, but to put an end to the offender’s life as an act of justification does not settle anything. Will anybody get satisfaction from being able to say that someone is killed because he is a murderer, a threat to the society; and that someone deserved it and it’s mandated by the law? Would it really uplift the ambiance of justice and set things right once the convicted has been executed? Will it really bring peace of mind to the families of the ones being wronged? What needs to be mended here, as a solution to the surge of criminality, is the Philippine Justice system itself, where peace and order are technically rooted. To see other people be capable of getting away with their cases because they have power and money to afford bail, hire and induce lawyers to manipulate the stories, and bribe officials, makes the system rotten and loses its integrity. It is not the absence of an extreme penalty, saying death, which makes those who do wrong, became bold and unshaken about the consequences of the crimes they do, but the knowledge that they bear about the lacking of a fair treatment among the levels of society in fulfilling what was written in our law—The governing law whose grip was too loose to hold justice. While the debate on the comeback of the Death Penalty rung the Senate halls, let us hope that our legislators be guided and enlightened to come up of what was truly an effective and rightful solution to the disciplinary problem of our country. As a quotation goes “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind,” then our goal must to never lose the vision of this country.

Death as a form of punishment to implement justice is very self- contradicting and arguable. Not just that it fortifies the conflict between the law of the state and the law of God, it also signals pressure and questions to the integrity, liability and capability of our Justice system After its second abolition in 2006, death penalty haunts and attempts a comeback once again and the debate among the pros and antis restarted. Capital Punishment, commonly known as death penalty has been performed in the Philippines traceable to the Spanish regime and had gone through varied versions such as garrote, firing squad, electric chair execution and lethal injection. It has gained full sovereignty in 1946 as punishment for heinous crimes including murder, rape and treason. Under the rule of the former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, drug trafficking was also been added. It was first suspended from practice during the redrafting of the 1987 Constitution under Former Pres. Corazon Aquino, but was later reinstated by her successor. Not until 2006, under Pres. Gloria Arroyo did the roster of death sentenced inmates have been ended and the charges were turned to life imprisonment or reclusion perpetua instead. January of this year, Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III filed SB 2080, or “An Act Imposing Death Penalty in the Philippines”, a proposition to revive Republic Act 7659 or the Death Penalty Law. It was after the occurrence of sequential criminal activities that an alarm called for an effective mode of action. As Sotto sees it, execution was the option since having life imprisonment as the maximum punishment did not appear to be horrifying enough to scare criminals from doing heinous crimes. “The indiscriminate and horrendous brutality happening everywhere rightfully and justifiably compels the government to resort to the ultimate criminal penalty provided for by no less than our constitutionthe death penalty. The imposition of life imprisonment proves to be a non-deterrent against criminality,” said Sotto. Contrastingly, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) condemns the idea of restoring death penalty. CBCP president Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said, “The aim of justice is the restoration of broken relations and the ruptured social coherence that follow from

Pangalawa, lubha itong Cassandra Louise Capiroso and Juliza Maloles, the first champion of Likhang Pag-awit. magastos at kulang na rin sa oras upang maghanda at pangatlo, wala itong pinupuntahan.

Pulse Asia released lists of personalities that top the 2016 presidential, vice-presidential and senatorial candidacy on their surveys last September. Different personalities rank 1st in the three categories: Vice President Jejomar Binay on presidency, Sen. Grace Poe on vice-presidency and Sen. Tito Sotto on Senatorial list. Although the percentage was cut by 10% still, VP Binay remains at rank 1. According to

the United Nation's Alliance (UNA) Partylist, they already expected that Vice President Jejomar Binay's point will decline at Pulse Asia's survey because of the allegations against him. The percentage from all the social classes from Class A-E was down from 41% (June-July) to 31%. Binay was charged plunder case because of the overpricing of Makati City Hall Bldg. 2 and of the other

establishments, it is also said that he got 13% kickback in every income which is equivalent to millions of pesos. Whereas, DILG Sec. Mar Roxas ranked as number 2 and it is alleged that it was because of the issues that Binay is facing. According to him, he's unaware of that matter and that he's only focused on his job not only in DILG but as well as his job under P-noy's administration.

Other presidential candidates were Sen. Miriam Defensor (11%), Grace Poe who ranked first in last 2011 Senatorial election (10%), former president and incumbent mayor Joseph Estrada (10%), and other individuals just gain almost 1-2% (refer to the table 1 below). However, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's criticisms against the Binays don’t help his ranking that fall from 5% to 1%.

*Top 12 Vice-Presidential candidates where in Sen. Grace Poe hit the first place. Other personalities that were in the list for presidency will also be seen at vide-presidency except Antonio Trillanes IV.

A hero who couldn’t fly--he couldn’t even walk-- but he had the power that lived in his heart and mind, harnessed by different circumstances in his journey faced by realities. The power that had contributed in achieving the freedom of billions of Filipinos today. He who proved that no hardships can’t overcome if hard work is harder than it. He, who was an ordinary man with extraordinary talent and uncompressing will to pursue what he had believed, was just and right. He, who was named Apolinario Mabini Y Maranan, a public servant, an educator, a revolutionist, a patriot, a nationalist, a statesman, a great scholar, a true Filipino curving a blood of Batangueño. July 23, 1864 in Tanauan, Batangas there was born a man who fulfilled a crucial role in Philippine Revolution. Being second of eight children of an illiterate peasant and a public market vendor, Mabini in his early age was exposed to the harshness of poverty. That triggered his forethought to serve for the welfare and interest of the nation, especially for the poor. He put in his mind that he will serve the nation with the maxim he never abandoned until the last strand of his breath-“The first duty of the government is to interpret the popular will faithfully.” Mabini knew that what he wanted just not require an ounce of determination but he had to work for it. Working and studying concurrently, he was able to earned his law degree in 1894 at the University of Santo Tomas, and admitted to the bar the following year. Aside from cultivating his naturally giant intellect he also joined groups with the likes of his belief. He was known with his iron rationality that his credence in achieving things in peaceful manner made him decide that in Philippines it was a different situation.

Not only became a member but he became the Secretary of its Supreme Council when he joined the revived La Liga Filipina in 1893.He also joined a lodge of the Philippine Masonry. And he also becomes the Grand Orator of its Regional Grand Council using his nickname Katabay. Mabini’s mother wanted him to become a priest. But he said that priesthood was not meant for him and he said “I am, however, convinced that the true minister of God is not one who wears a cassock, but everyone who proclaims his glory by good works of service to the greatest possible number of his creatures.” By this, he believed he can serve God and serve the welfare of Filipino when he became the president of the Council of secretaries and as a Secretary of Foreign Affairs when he do the greatest possible good in whatever position he would have. He had bravery, sincerity and loyalty to the Filipinos that he did not shake against wealthy and influential Filipinos of his time if they were standing against the good of his fellowmen. He said in one of his writings “ To tell a man to be quiet when a necessity not fulfilled is shaking all the fibers his being tantamount to asking a hungry man to be filled before taking the food which he needs.” Because of his bravery that served as hindrance for some Filipinos and Foreigners with their own self-interested goals in his dear country, his life was almost put to an end for many times. Like when he was caught by the Guardia Civil for alleged connections with the reformists, that if not because of his polio, his death may be written as December 10, 1896. Still, he continued to be a public servant, 1898 when he was became the adviser of Aguinaldo. But the year after, he was dropped from the cabinet due to Illustrados pressure.

The Philippine never again had a statesman as great, ethical, radiant, willed and profound as Mabini. He was arrested by the Americans on December 1899 during the Philippine –American War and was exiled to Guam along with 56 other Filipinos. But that was not enough to stop a man with unwavering dedication to serve the nation; he still kept writing articles against Americans that made him called by the authorities as the “Brains of Insurrection”. Though he had to fight the Americans, his fear of dying in foreign land due to his failing health made him reluctantly took the oath of allegiance to American flag in Feb. 26, 1903.He died months later due to cholera, he was 38 that time. His death was called by the Spanish Newspaper as a ” National Misfortune” ( El Noticiero de Manila) and he was named as “The most excellent man born in the Filipino soil”( El Mercantil) and that he had been the most profound thinker and philosopher the Filipino raced ever produced. Many Filipinos until today knew how great Mabini was even former PUP President Dr. Prudente. He believed that Mabini’s distinctiveness, him, having brilliant leadership, strong commitment to his own ideals and inimitable ability to overcome hardships in life is a perfect example to embody the Principles of PUP officials, faculty members, admin. Staffs and students or better called, scholars.

Sabi nga ni Stephen King, “Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different.” Maraming matutuwa at syempre may madidismaya.

FEATURE Meet the Top Notcher

`On August 2, 2014, the Professional Regulatory Commission-Board of Accountancy released the list of the new successful Certified Public Accountants. All over the Philippines, there were 5440 examinees and only 1107 made it. Luckily, one of PUPSTB’s products, Jo-Ann Mercado, (April 2009 graduate) made it on top and landed on the 9th Place having an average score of 90.86%. Not on a thought of everyone that a simple and silent lad who always wants to stay on the corner of the room and read her notes is now a successful CPA, what a privilege to have an interview with her. And as an aspiring board passer like me, it is a blessing to know her techniques that we could use to pass that very difficult board exam. For more about her success, these five skimpy questions will unfold it all (take note, this is unedited): R.P: Kindly give us a background

(E.g. study to enroll on a review center. routines, study techniques, R.P: Did you feel that you will usual things that you do) be included in the top 10 after taking the exam? I scheduled my time so we really worked hard for it. well so I will be prepared for the I think I don’t have any special board exam and fulfill my dream. study technique/ But I lose hope routine to share. on the first day was overjoyed of the board. But eventually the board exam I realized I right after you shouldn’t react graduated? that way so I paused and prayed, I told God “Lord, ok lang po kahit Ms. Mercado, CPA: Our family hindi mag-top basta pumasa wasn’t financially blessed that lang.” From the first subject up to time. I had to work after college the last, never again did I expect to help my parents support the to be part of the top 10. I just studies of my younger sister. After prayed so hard to pass the board. four and a half years, I resigned from my work and had the chance R.P: What is your first reaction

when you received the news that you ranked 9 on the board exam? Ms. Mercado, CPA: I was surprised since from day 1 of the board, I already gave up the dream of becoming a placer. I was overjoyed and at the same time grateful for one of the grandest blessings God had given me. R.P: Any pieces of advice for those students who want to take the board exam and those aspiring board takers who wants to be a CPA like you (study habits and recommendations for example). Ms. Mercado, CPA: There is no ‘one-size fits all’ study habit. Each reviewee should embrace the style which is suitable and effective for him. Don’t forget to pray and ask guidance to Him before studying and before taking the exam. Build self-confidence. Believe that you’ll make it and have faith in God and His plan for you.

seven Things You Need to Know About PUPSTB Patrick Lim 1. It is so grand it has a mini-zoo. The mini-zoo just happens to be an open one, which means that the animals are not enclosed in cages but are roaming freely around the school. 2. Studying in PUPSTB is a FINE experience. 3. PUPSTB is a magical place. So magical that the doors of some classrooms are invisible.

Same as the doors, the windows too cannot be seen by the naked eye. They are also quite reliable during windy days, allowing the chilling winds to enter the room uninvited to give you hypothermia; or if you are writing something on your desk, to toss the papers away, sending you off after them while your classmates stare at you.

4. Another proof of

statement no. 3—students are taught how to transform things, like the stairs in the new building, which become instant seats for gossiping students.

5. Studying here requires you to be brave, because if you don’t possess enough courage, you won’t get past the gates; the guards there are so nice and friendly that they will raise their voices at you and humiliate you in

front of other students if you have only a registration card instead of an ID. 6. Here in PUPSTB, students learn the value of sharing. We share almost everything here, from the chairs, to the answers during quizzes and examinations. 7. Professors here are never late. *crosses fingers*

They need to explore and experience the actual thing! At mararanasam to sa fieldtrip. - Gov. JPM/P.r.

- Just Say Yes Oo. Gastos lang din yan -__- Jejema Hindi, kasi, as the name implies, educational tour, so it is expected na we'll gain new knowledge. Hindi naman lahat ng knowledge sa field of studies natin ay makukuha sa school, so having educational tour is a must. Also, it will bring the students enjoyment that will balance their school life. - Umali Depende, wag na lang nilang alisin. Ang ganda kaya pag may fieldtrip. Haha - A.T

OPINION Sickmind Fraud

The Three must-CAREERS Many years in the Philippines have made me to figure out how Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao treats the people in his lives, manages his career, and becomes a true public figure. On my mid-childhood, Iwas fond of watching him in the ring not knowing he is a Filipino. I also wondered how come he threw strong punches to his opponent who’s taller and bigger than him and with every great punches he was able to kick out the enemy’s defence, I just found myself saying “Ow!” and “Ah!” But now, having a mind-set on how Pacquiao was acting in his career, I can’t understand why he needs to divide his time into three careers: Boxing, Politics and Basketball. BOXING. We see Pacman now as a wealthy and a well-known person; a great difference from his life when he was only starting his career in boxing. At the age of 14, Pacquiao moved to Manila and lived there for a while on the streets. He started as an amateur boxer then eventually made it to the higher ranking. He is the

first and only eight-division world champion, in which he has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes. Nowadays, he is able to fight 3 to 4 different boxers in a year but sometimes, the boxing committee decides for a rematch, like what happened with him and Morales, Marquez and many others. No doubt, he really is a pride of Filipino. POLITICS. Aside from boxing, Pacquiao has participated in acting, music recording and politics. In May 2010, Pacquiao was elected to the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress of the Philippines, representing the province of Saranggani. He was re-elected in 2013 to the 16th Congress of the Philippines. Some we’re happy and supported him all the way but others, well, they wanted him to focus on his boxing career. BASKETBALL.

a very long process. Pacman first conducted try-outs to select players for his team. He then went to the committee of the association to bring his team to the “All Philippine Cup”. And now, at last, Pacman was drafted to be a playing coach in PBA. It was a great accomplishment for him. He again pursued a new career where he might also be famous. But how about his boxing and political assignments? Isn’t he contented on all his wealth? Fame? His province needs him, his activeness for their aims and wills, and his act of responsibility towards them. What will happen now? Try to think of it, what if hypothetically, his team in basketball has a schedule to play while he has to attend a meeting

in congress and while he needs to be present in the press conference for his upcoming fight? Would he go for the game, or for the meeting or for the boxing presscon? I think, he should go to the appointment, retire in boxing, let someone manage his team and concentrate on the career where he is needed most-- the politics. He gained trust, trust which none of his political rivals have. He should treasure this while thinking of something which might help him to repay this trust, like some road developments for easy transportation and construction of buildings to increase employment rate. If he then accomplishes all of these and satisfies his people, maybe that time, he could try another career where he can showcase his talents and abilities that he acquired from his experiences.

SELFIEsh Do you have this penchant of taking your own photos anytime, anywhere and with anyone (them totally unaware)? For your information, there is a House Bill 4807 or the Protection against Personal Intrusion Act tagged as the “Anti-Selfie Bill” that is at the time being, was sent back to the public information committee for further deliberation even it was already at the brink of passage on third reading in plenary. nila.

made way to the rise of SELFIE-a social media-spawned activity where one takes his or her photo, oftentimes with the specific intention to show the background or other elements within the frame. Philippines takes pride of its tourist attractions all over the world. We have Boracay Island, Underground River in Palawan, Chocolate Hills in Bohol and others that are too many to mention that are teemed with local and foreign tourists. And taking snapshots of these breathtaking views (which may include some strangers who happened to obstruct the panoramic view, call them photo bombers) is inevitable. I’ll be more sorry to disturb the peaceful life of leprechauns, trolls and fairies underneath. The thing is, isn’t tourism profitable? Yes was the only answer. Aside from that, Filipinos have something more to boast. On a database built by Time Magazine, Makati City and Pasig City abode of 500,000 inhabitants

Kaye Mari Maranan

had produced more selfies per capita or 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people, was the “Selfie Capital of the World” beating 459 cities that the international magazine had evaluated. Placing ninth to it was the Queen City of the South, Cebu City, having an average of 99 selfie-takers for every 100,000 people. Perhaps, it is already one of our reflex actions. So why push such a nonsense bill in the Congress, when there are more pressing issues to discuss? Poverty, perhaps or our freedom of information? Isn’t it becoming an intruder in such a way that it will invade our own private space? Click. #NoWay As expected, it has gained different reactions from various organizations. Since law enforcements activities are the only exemption, there lies a big question on how we’ll be going to practice our freedom of expression if ever.

7 Wonders I wonder… Why don’t some professors practice punctuality? Is it hard to come on time? Or is it hard to come at all? They have the knowledge the students should learn but where are they? Somewhere out there letting the students to wait in vain. I hate to break this to you, but I’m pretty sure you already know this as much as you know that the sky is blue; there are-- and probably forever there will be-- professors whose hobby is to be late for his class. Ironically, professors mark the absence or the tardiness of his students while he himself is also a latecomer. Or much worse, he is always absent. What made the admin decide to assign a professor on a certain subject where he is unknowledgeable? It’s funny to think that not only the little things are being misplaced in this world. For instance, imagine a dentist were asked to perform an open-heart surgery. What do you think would happen? It is not very different on the situation happening in PUP. Professors are being assigned to teach a particular subject which is not his forte. Where do the professors get their exams? Do they just pick it somewhere else? After a couple of days preparing for the

exam, you will be shocked upon receiving your test paper. ‘Where on hell did my professor get this?’ Yes I know. I’ve experienced. And definitely, all of us did experience and will experience. The questions in the test papers were not usually the things they’ve taught us if they ever teach. It’s very unfortunate for us to grasp for the answers we never really had at the first place. When will the school rules be strictly implemented? Or rather, when will we ever know the rules and its counterpart punishments? It’s hard to follow a rule but it’s harder to break a rule without actually knowing that there is a rule. Who should be blamed for the low grades? The professors who ungenerously give grades or the students whose aim is only to pass and not to excel? They say that regardless of where university you study or who your professors are, you will be the one to assess your academic performances. It is you who make your own grade; your instructors are just the instrument. But what really happens is this: no matter how hard you study, how badly you want to excel, how

ReiJanGon

competitive you are, you are just a piece of this little game. You cannot control the things that come and not all the odds are in your favor. You will either be the first or the succeeding. You pass or you fail. You’ll be an achiever or a mediocre. You’re the source or the cheater. You’re the favorite or the unremembered. You cannot get the two; it’s one or the other. How do the PUPians deal with these issues? Some are just being blind, never minding the problems they are facing. Some are deaf to the sighs and cries for help of others and not hearing the issues they’re supposed to know and be involved in. Some are mute and have adamantly decided not to speak for himself and for the others. Some can bear even the worst-case scenarios, dealing with the problems all through the way just until they get their diplomas. Fortunately, there are still some who are curious. Some who want to get involve. Some who make a move. Some who go against the flow. And some who will never stop wondering, searching and seeking for the right answers. If you wonder these things too?

V e t e r a n photojournalist Mike Alquinto, chairman of Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines (PCP), Inc., said that this bill can be used against the media and journalists and that clear provisions should specify exemption of news gathering. Jose Torres Jr., board member of PCP, said the bill needs to define what "intent to gain or profit therefrom" means. "It must be clearly defined what can be classified for 'gain' or 'profit.' News outfits - newspapers, magazines, television, online publications, radio, and news wire agencies - are basically for profit organizations. There must be clear provisions that specify that news gathering must be exempted from this section," he added. On the other hand, Press Photographers of the Philippines president Freddy Mañalac, said it is “shocking” that HB 4807 was rushed through the legislative mill. He said the swift action on the bill just proves how legislators prioritize a bill that will protect their interests. It also gained criticisms from ‘netizens’. Citizen journalism, wherein anyone can post pictures or even videos in the Web, had performed a vital role in giving public awareness about social issues. There were also prompt resolutions to crimes. No way will such a bill be turned into a law. Not only are we a nation of narcissists but also a nation of alert individuals who have their minds open for the truth. We badly need greater transparency and this modernization will be of good help. We can’t let such a bill progress anymore unless we wanted to be controlled by those self-serving officials who even had stayed on their positions for a long time now are not yet finish with their hidden agendas. Or we may also have our photos confined with the same background all over again—plain and dull. Now that is something so SELFIEsh.

Book Review ReiJanGon

The Young Elites by Marie Lu Putnam; 355pages; Php499 The author of New York Times Best Seller Legend Trilogy, Marie Lu, is back with her new series. She shares that the first draft --which is actually her 22nd-- of her manuscript didn’t work well. Originally, she tried in vain to tell a story of a hero who takes on the task of mastering his powers and vanquishing the villain but eventually she found out, with the help of her agent, that the story didn’t fit well together and that’s when she came up with a new protagonist, Adelina who is the actually the antagonist on the first draft she wrote. So her character is somehow the villainous one. The story sets during Renaissance period when a blood fever devastated their nation a decade ago. Many people got the deadly illness and eventually died. Others who survived were left with strange markings that would change their lives forever. Adelina is one of the unfortunate survivors. Her black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale and a jagged scar crossed the part where her left eye once was.

The misfortunes never stop there because her father and the society see her as a malfetto-- an abomination, an evil. People believe that malfettos are curse on their society, bad luck that caused the regression on their nation. But some malfettos are rumored to possess uncanny abilities. Though their identities remain secret, they have come to be named the ‘Young Elites’. Adelina who has been suffering from the cold, cruel hands of his father finally decides to escape from him and leave her younger sister behind, Violetta. In contrary, Violetta never suffers from their father. She is his favorite, his ever-loved daughter because although she had the fever, she got out from it unscathed. The night she escapes her extraordinary power

Trajeco

manifests that instigates the turn of events. She is found and captured by the Inquisition Axis. The group, which is led by Teren Santoro, is the King’s men whose mission is to destroy the malfettos before they destroy the whole nation. On the day of Adelina’s execution, a group of hooded and masked Young Elites--the Dagger Society—save her. Enzo, leader of Dagger Society, discovers that Adelina’s power is beyond extraordinary. Now that she’s with her fellow Young Elites, their mission is to overthrow the King to stop the killing of malfettos. The story doesn’t just revolve around the battle of Young Elites. But also, the battle of Adelina against the darkness, hatred and anger that has festered inside her that seeps a little more every day. X-men, Assassin’s Creed and Game of Thrones elements are mashed together into a novel and serve to the readers to devour it hastily. It is the first book of Lu’s new series filled with magic, darkness, mystery and bit of romance. Told thru Adelina’s first person POV and third person POV of other characters, this will definitely keep its readers at the edge of their seat. Many books made me wish I could live within their story, but I wouldn’t mind dying in this one.

PUPians’ A-Z List

These are random PUP-related stuffs. If you don’t know a thing or two, then you don’t fully experience yet the glory and downside of being an ‘Iskolar ng Bayan’!

A-ir ventilation. A cold breeze always

embraces PUPians during class hours. This not a typical form of ventilation ‘cause this is a gift from nature that passes directly thru open windows. B-all games. There are students who really find ball games fascinating. They are very resourceful too, as they make the hallways and driveways an

alternative court. Just beware! When you walk absentmindedly, there is a great probability that the ball might hit you in the face. C-ramming. This is in PUPians’ vocabulary along with the word ‘procrastination’. Procrastinate now, cram later. D-OTA. What do you think the reason why your classmates (mostly boys) go to computer shop during leisure? No, not research works of course. E-xtra rice. Extra hard work needs extra rice. Unfortunately, the price of extra rice in Panini rises to 8pesos so an extra hard work needs extra rice; extra rice requires extra allowance. F-ees. PUPians are naturally generous to the extent that they don’t question the unnecessary/unused fees which are part of the miscellaneous fee. Or is it just that the official receipt is so barely readable they can’t even decipher a word on it? G-rades. Grades given by the professors are really a top secret. First, you need to log-in on your SIS account. But before that, you need to make sure that your SIS account is accessible. Don’t be surprised if your password is always being denied. H-ogwarts. PUP is a Hogwarts in disguise. Many magical things happen here. Vanishing doors, invisible professors, roaming cats and dogs (professors are unregistered animagi) and the unexplained grades. Very magical. I-D. New order has been imposed. After 22years, finally, we have this ever-cliché

‘no i.d no entry’ policy. The question is, ‘how long?’ J-ustice. The unjust system is not only in our government. It happens here all the time. For instance, no matter how hard you study but your professor doesn’t know you then you’ll end up having the same average grade with others. K-wek-kwek. Many students take this one as their food-comforter. After series of quizzes and seatworks, you’ll find yourself at the foodcourt poking a stick at this bestseller kwek-kwek and devouring it until the last coin of yours is gone. (I recently discovered that a bigger version of kwek-kwek is called ‘kwak-kwak’. Woah!) L-ate. What is the basis of being late? Is it when you come not on time? Or is it until your professor hasn’t come yet? Ironically, professors mark the absence or the tardiness of his students while he himself is also a latecomer. Or much worse, he is always absent. M-arvels. Craving for pizza but can’t afford yellow cab? No problem! Foodcourt has a new franchise. A very affordable pizza all can be eaten alone or can be shared with friends. N-ightshift. You don’t need part time jobs to experience night shifting. PUP offers that too! Even freshmen have classes at night. How cool is that?! O-ctagon. Need to rehearse? Practice? Or even test your experiment for Physics? The octagon is here all for you but first and foremost, you have to reserve it, maybe three weeks before the date you need it? Yeah, it’s quite indemand. P-ancit. Panini’s bestseller signature student meal is composed of rice, your own choice of meat dish and of course, their pancit. Q-uizzes. Apart from assignments and seatworks, quizzes test how much you learn from your professors. The thing is, if they ever taught you.

R-egi. Yes, it’s baaaaack! No need

to request one for your scholarship program. This is the first thing you would have to be officially called ‘Iskolar ng Bayan’. And also, when the time comes you forget to bring your i.d, it will save you from the guards keeping you out of the threshold of PUP. S-ubjects. It comes in three types: the minor, the REAL major and the FEELING major. No more explanation. You definitely know what I’m talking about here. T-ita Rose. Who here don’t know who Tita Rose is? She’s probably the most favorite tindera of PUP community out of campus grounds. U-nderground canteen. Other universities have cafeteria but PUP proudly gives its student the so-called ‘Underground Canteen’ that is not really underground. Amazing, isn’t it? V-andalism. Form of art that most PUPians love to do. Instead of painting on canvass, sketching or drawing, they decided to release their realism, expressionism and impressionism artistry thru vandalizing walls and chairs. W-acky. PUPians are reaaaaaally into photography. Their subject is of course themselves. Wacky. Jumpshot. Pout. Japan. Most are selfie-genic who even borrow others’ cellphone (only those with frontcams) just to take picture of themselves. Call that vanity? No. That’s their art of photography! X-erox. Copyright of the book says: “scanning, photocopying and any other form of reproducing part of this book is unlawful piracy and theft of author’s intellectual property” Maybe the publisher should have printed those words in a much bigger font so the students will immediately notice that. Students are so busy talking about practicality. Y-ellow paper. So among your circle of friends, who is the source of yellow paper? Hope he/she won’t get tired being generous, merciful and understanding to you who never think of trying to buy his own pad of yellow paper. Z-ombie. This is the new fashion trend of students after exam week. Bags under the eyes, pimpled-face, shabby hair and a practical limping walk-- everyone’s fashion statement!
