g r e e t i n g s s o ro r s !

As we celebrate the 53rd National Convention of our beloved Sorority, we are proud to showcase the accomplishments of the South Atlantic Region. Sierra and I are elated to welcome you to the South Atlantic Regional Sisterhood Luncheon. The 2016-2017 year has been replete with amazing accomplishments. The 152 chapters across the region was able to raise over 1.5 million in scholarship funds. We have worked with so many youth and contributed to our local communities. This has been a stellar year. This issue highlights some of our achievements as well as some national changes to our membership intake process (MIT). We also worked with the Divine Nine at the 2nd Annual North Carolina Legislative Day. This was a great achievement as we led the way on laying out a legislative agenda of critical issues for the State of North Carolina. Not only was the Divine Nine recognized in the Senate Chambers but one of the critical issues was discussed on the Senate Floor. It is amazing what can happen when we are unified and on one front. The theme of our Sisterhood Luncheon is “Living Like Life It’s Golden.” That means that you are living life to the fullest. You are being the best you that you can be. No matter your circumstances, you have an unwavering faith that God is able to bless you abundantly. We hope that you enjoy the wonderful luncheon that we have planned for you. So, bring your high spirits and “golden” attitudes. We are going to have a good time! Several of our chapters will be duly recognized for their hard work at serving with purpose and dedication. It is our honor to not only serve the Sensational South Atlantic Region but we count it a privilege to acknowledge all that you have done to serve your communities. Once again, you are welcomed in this place and let us always . . . Keep it SENSATIONAL!

WILL YOU BE THAT SISTER?

Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked. — Exodus 2:7 NLT I suspect that there are very few Christians who aren’t familiar with the story of a great biblical leader by the name of Moses. This character is most known as the one whom the Lord used to rescue the Israelites out of Egypt. But even before Moses was aware of this magnificent call of leadership upon his life, there was someone who played a critical role in his survival and his destiny. That individual was his sister. In the story of Moses, having a sister who was concerned with his well-being proved to have a profound impact upon his life. It was his sister who spoke up on his behalf and caused him to be cared for by his own mother until he was weaned and old enough to live in the palace. Moses’ blessing was his sister that day; and certainly, this story would have turned out differently without her concern for him. Likewise, women who are fortunate enough to become a member of our organization immediately gain the gift of sisterly love and sisterhood, whether she has biological siblings or not. And sisterhood is a tremendous gift.

Join us for Monthly Manna.

As a sister, we can hold the key to change the trajectory of someone’s life. But we must be willing to use it.

A moment of meditation and prayer to guide us through the month.

As a sister, we can speak up when someone’s reputation or credibility is at stake. But we must not sit silently.

First Sunday evening of each month at 8 p.m.

As a sister, we can affect the reality of someone else’s dream or vision. But we must be diligent in our pursuit to help. Perhaps Moses’ sister didn’t understand the magnitude of her decision that day, but we know the impact upon his life. Many of the women within our organization are just like Moses, called to accomplish great exploits in leadership, in politics, in education, in technology, in the arts and in religion throughout this world. Will you be the sister who will help her walk into that destiny? We are all called to make a difference in the lives of others. So, let’s begin with our sister. As members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, let’s endeavor to be the sister who gives life to another sister’s dream. Will you be that sister?

CHARLESTON ALUMNAE CHAPTER 2017 MAY WEEK PROGRAM

“Strengthening Our Communities through Faith, Education and Community Involvement” he Charleston Alumnae Chapter, founded in 1940, has observed May Week with a public program for nearly seventy-seven years to award scholarships, recognize finer womanhood young ladies, salute citizens who demonstrate exemplary contributions to the community and honor the chapter’s Delta of the Year. This year’s 2017 May Week Program was held at Mother Emanuel AME Church, one of the most historic African American churches in Charleston, S.C. The May Week Program also honored our departed Soror, Myra Singleton Thompson, who lost her life, with eight other angels, known as the Emanuel Nine in the most unspeakable and heart wrenching tragedy that took place at Mother Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015. Soror Myra Thompson epitomized the principles and values of education, scholarship, finer womanhood, community service, sisterhood, and the foundation of it all – Christian love – that was highlighted throughout the May Week Program. The Sensational Guest Speaker, South Atlantic Regional Director, Juanita Massenburg, delivered an awesome heart-warming message that captivated the purpose and spirit of the May Week Program. Soror Myra Singleton Thompson’s daughter, Soror Denise Quarles, was presented with a plaque in honor of her mother’s contributions to the chapter and to the Charleston community. The chapter honored eighteen finer womanhood recipients, five community service honorees, four chapter scholarship recipients, four book stipend recipients, the recipient of the MaeDee Brown Scholarship, named for a chapter charter member and the recipient of the Myra Singleton Thompson Memorial Scholarship were recognized. Soror Lynn Marie Boone was honored as the 2017 Charleston Alumnae Chapter Delta of the Year before a crowd of more than one hundred twenty sorors in attendance and an abundance of Divine Nine Greek members, family, and friends.

THE 2016-2017 MEMBERSHIP INTAKE SEASON began with a new structure in our region. The new structure entails assigning one seasoned membership intake trainer to the chapter who is conducting membership intake. The trainer remains with the chapter, beginning with the chapter vote, until all paperwork has been submitted to headquarters. The chapter feedback has been very positive and the new structure provides confidence and assurance that the membership intake process is implemented in accordance with the Membership Intake Doctrines.

The Membership Intake regional leaders are Joni Hicks, Regional Chair; Alycia Marcena, North Carolina Regional Co-Chair; Rosemary

Delta's Participate in the Second Annual Divine Nine North Carolina Legislative Day... a Powerfully Collaborative Success! The Divine Nine made history in Raleigh, North Carolina during the 2nd Annual Divine Nine Legislative Day that was held Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Raleigh Convention Center. We experienced the best in national and international

leadership, collegiality and unity among 848 members in record attendance to discuss the critical issues that affect North Carolina and the nation that included voter registration and suppression tactics, body cameras for police officers in every city, getting the legal age limit changed from 16 to 18 for teenagers not to be tried as adults and so much more! It was a very historic and heartfelt day of kindred but progressive action, thought and tireless commitment as International Presidents, Regional leadership, Presidents and Administration from HBCU's, smashing speakers, elected officials from the North Carolina House and Senate and across the state and attendees lifted our voices, plan of action and unyielding commitment forward! This followed a phenomenal meeting at the Governor's mansion Tuesday night, May 16th where Governor Roy Cooper graciously welcomed the leadership and engaged dialogue of the issues.
