Helping seniors drive safer, longer Since January 2011, nearly 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day, joining the fastest growing age group in the nation. According to a recent American Automobile Association (AAA) survey of that booming population, nearly half of seniors worry about losing their freedom and mobility when the time comes for them to transition from driver to passenger. From understanding how vision changes affect one’s ability to drive at night, to researching the effects certain medications can have on one’s driving ability, it’s important to get the facts about driving for seniors. Use these tips from AAA to ensure you and your family members are driving safely:

Be aware of how aging affects driving habits.
Seniors may not notice the gradual ways that age can impact their driving ability. For instance, by age 60, your eyes need three times the amount of light to see properly as they do for people 20 years-old, which means it’s more difficult to see at night. Likewise, one-third of Americans suffer from hearing loss by age 65, which means senior drivers may be unable to hear highpitched noises such as emergency Evaluate your driving response vehicles. Find the right fit.
• Seniors should increase the distance between their car and the car in front of them, to allow more time to react to sudden braking. • Eliminating distractions in the vehicle and avoiding heavy traffic can also help seniors identify emergency sirens.
Many seniors may not realize that their car may not be optimally adjusted to fit them. For example, sitting too close to the steering wheel can injury, should the airbag deploy during a collision. • Make sure you have at least 10 to 12 inches between your chest and the
steering wheel. • When seated properly, you should be able to see the ground in front of your car within 12 to 15 feet and 1 1/2 car widths left and right. Visit www.car-fit.org to assess the safety of your vehicle, find the proper seat and mirror adjustments and more.
Talk with your doctor and pharmacist Ensure that the medications you take - both prescription and over-thecounter - will not impair your ability to drive safely. In addition, make sure all your medications go through one pharmacy, so the pharmacists on staff can better assess any potential drug in-
teractions. To help older drivers and their families deal with driving and mobility challenges related to aging, AAA has launched a new website (www.SeniorDriving.AAA. com) to make a comprehensive suite of tools and resources available at the click of a button. From an Ask-the-Expert
feature to Roadwise Review - an online screening tool that measures functional abilities linked to crash risk and more, all of the features are free to site visitors. The site also offers links and resources to help families find other means of transportation when their loved one is no longer able to drive safely. — Family Features

Pharmacist tips for vitamin supplements According to the National Center for Health Statistics, more than half of all U.S. adults are now taking supplements, which makes understanding the difference between quality vitamins even more crucial. Approximately nine in ten pharmacists (93 percent) agree taking vitamins and supplements is important for maintaining good overall health. When choosing between brands to recommend, pharmacists consider the following: • Product Quality. Nearly nine in ten pharmacists (85 percent) say that product quality is a very important factor when deciding whether or not to recommend a specific brand of
vitamin. Look to trusted brands, such as the number one pharmacist recommended brand of letter vitamins and fish oil - Nature Made. • Product Purity. Many people may not be aware that it’s important to consider a vitamin’s purity. In fact, nearly four in five pharmacists (77 percent) say that product purity is very important in choosing whether or not to recommend a brand, and two in three (65 percent) say the same of product potency as well. • USP Seal: Two in three pharmacists (67 percent) also say it’s important to look for the USP seal or other third-party certification when selecting vitamins and supplements. The USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program is a voluntary testing and au-
diting program that helps dietary supplement manufactures ensure the production of quality products for consumers. The program verifies the quality, purity and potency of dietary supplement finished products.
Top pharmacist recommendations The survey also found that pharmacists were “veryâ€? and “somewhatâ€? likely to recommend the following: • In addition to recommending fish oil to support heart health, two in three pharmacists (63 percent) are also likely to suggest flaxseed oil and about half (47 percent) recommend garlic. • Nine in ten pharmacists recommend certain vitamins and supplements like Vitamin D to fill specific
nutrition gaps • Only about two in five pharmacists (42 percent) recommend ginkgo biloba for mental alertness. • For urinary and immune health, four in five (82 percent) recommend cranberry.

Avoiding a deadly danger for diabetics New technology gives people with diabetes peace of mind
Diabetes affects millions of Americans, and for many, it can cause devastating effects. One of the biggest risks of diabetes is a sudden and unexpected drop in blood sugar (glucose), called hypoglycemia. It is responsible for a spate of unnecessary hospital visits, auto accidents and deaths nationwide. “Every day, people are dying unnecessarily, simply because they could not predict or detect a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) event, said Steve Edelman, M.D., founder and director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes, a not-for-profit educational organization. “That’s a tragic
outcome, especially because there is modern technology available right now that can prevent it. A New Way to Monitor Glucose Levels Traditionally, the standard-of-care for diabetes is to measure blood sugar with regular finger sticks. There are some limitations to that method, however: • Finger sticks capture only a static snapshot of blood sugar. • There is no way to know if blood sugar levels are heading up or down, or how fast. • There are no real-time alarms that alert when blood sugar is headed to the

danger zone. New technology from Dexcom called Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), identifies potentially lifethreatening drops in blood sugar while driving, sleeping and other critical times. It shows not only total blood sugar, but also the speed and direction in which it is moving, and immediately alerts the user to dangerous changes so action can be taken. CGM is considered one of the most-significant breakthroughs in diabetes management in the last 40 years. People with diabetes are not always aware that their glucose levels are drop-

ping. Studies show that one in four people with Type I diabetes experience hypoglycemic unawareness, a complication of diabetes in which the patient is unaware of a deep drop in blood sugar because it fails to trigger the characteristic symptoms. Drops in blood sugar cause a progressive loss of mental function and cognitive motor skills, which can make operating a motor vehicle dangerous, or result in ‘dead in bed’ syndrome, a tragic outcome of hypoglycemia occurring during sleep. “People with Type I diabetes who solely depend on finger sticks or home glucose monitoring do not
know what direction their blood sugar is going and could be at risk for a serious hypoglycemic event,â€? said Dr. Edelman. “For many individuals with diabetes who take insulin, glucose levels can crash quickly and unpredictably, putting them at risk of passing out or having a seizure while driving or caring for a child, for example. Low blood sugar can and does lead to death, especially in people who do not feel the symptoms of low glucose.â€? The Dexcom CGM device consists of three parts: a sensor, transmitter and monitor. • The sensor-about the width of two human hairs-
is applied by the user to the abdomen, and is attached to a tiny transmitter. • The tiny transmitter sends data wirelessly to a mini display monitor, about the size of a small cell phone, which fits easily in a purse or pocket. • Dexcom’s CGM is equipped with special alerts and alarms, letting users know when their blood sugars spike or drop, so that they can intervene to prevent potential problems. • Dexcom has the only CGM sensor that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved for up to seven days of continuous wear. — Family Features

The faces of skin cancer Summer is here, which means swimming, picnics and barbecues. These warmer days encourage many people to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. However, many are unaware of the serious consequences that can develop from sun exposure, including advanced skin cancer. An estimated one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. Most cases can be cured if caught early and treated when the disease is restricted to a small area. However, in some instances the cancer may come back or spread to other parts of the body. When skin cancer becomes advanced, the disease can be debilitating and, in some cases, may even become deadly.
A diagnosis at this advanced stage can be devastating. According to a recent online survey of people affected by advanced skin cancer, *people diagnosed with this disease often feel scared, overwhelmed and isolated. However, a new online resource called Faces of Skin Cancer provides resources that can help. The program offers people with advanced skin cancer and their caregivers an opportunity to hear from others and share their experiences with those who’ve been affected. Faces of Skin Cancer aims to make a difference in the lives of those affected by advanced skin cancer by offering a platform for sharing stories. The website features stories of people affected by ad-
vanced skin cancer and their experiences, including ways they have coped with this disease. The website also allows for visitors to share their own stories about advanced skin cancer. For each story submitted, $1 will be donated to advanced skin cancer programs. To learn more about the lives of those affected by advanced skin cancer, please visit www.facesofskincancer. org and view the Faces of Skin Cancer video. One dollar will be donated to advanced skin cancer programs for each video view. Remember, it is always important to be mindful of the sun’s harmful rays even when the sun is not out. Where to find your retirement-planning confidence With the leisure and reward of retirement a few short years away, the majority of baby boomers - born between 1945 and 1966 - are confident they have adequately planned and saved for their golden years. This is according to new research from investing services company Scottrade, Inc., which also found that 56 percent of baby boomers expect to fully retire between the ages of 55 and 74.
DIY retirement planning Overall, 72 percent of Americans report a strong level of confidence in their ability to plan their own retirement. That confidence comes from two actions: discussing retirement plans and savings strategies with others, and monitoring the news. Thirty-nine percent also said their self-assurance came from the fact that they preserved most of their retirement savings through the economic downturn. “More online and in-person investment education opportunities are available to Americans than ever before, said Kim Wells, Scottrade’s executive director of product development and chief marketing officer. “The availability of easy-to-use online trading and investing tools is empowering investors to build their portfolios and take charge of their financial futures themselves.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in the past 20 years, the diets of most Americans have changed, consuming too many calories and too few nutrients. This type of diet leads to weight gain - 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese - and 9 out of 10 Americans fall short of many essential nutrients in their diets. With on-thego lifestyles, many people find it difficult to eat right, exercise regularly and keep their diet in check. Dr. Melina Jampolis, author of “The Calendar Diet: A Month by Month Guide to Losing Weight While Living Your Life, knows that even small, consistent steps can lead to big changes over time. “Eating a well balanced diet, keeping to a fitness routine and maintaining one’s weight are all tactics to support a healthy lifestyle. Eat wholesome foods “A menu filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables will give you a big nutritional boost, suggests Dr. Melina. Vegetables, she explains, are packed with fiber and water, and are low in fat, so they decrease the calorie density of your diet, while boosting overall nutrition. Opt for lean protein in your diet as well, which helps control hunger, stabilize blood sugar levels, support your metabolism, as well as build and protect muscle. Have a question about vitamins? Ask your pharmacist When it comes to understanding which vitamins are right for you, it can be tricky to know what your body needs. For some, a multivitamin can help fill in gaps in nutrition, for others, extra calcium and vitamin D are needed to help keep bones strong and healthy. While most Americans will turn to their local pharmacist with questions concerning prescription medicines, few ask about which vitamins and supplements are right for them. In fact, many Americans don’t realize they have unlimited free access to a health expert - their local pharmacist - who can provide detailed guidance on products sold at the
pharmacy. This includes everything from over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines to vitamins and supplements. A recent survey sponsored by Nature Made found that pharmacists estimate they answer questions regarding prescription medications for about half of their customers. By comparison, they estimate they answer questions about OTC products for just one in three customers (35 percent) - and when it comes to answering questions about vitamins and supplements, they estimate they do so for just one in five customers (23 percent).

Is it time for an adventure? Women are on the move - especially women of the Baby Boomer generation. If you’ve felt the urge to see different places and experience a new adventure, you’re not alone. The Travel Industry Association estimates that 32 million single American women traveled at least once last year - and a lot of them were Boomers. “I’m in my early sixties, and in the last year, I traveled thousands of miles - with my husband and children, with girlfriends and alone,” says Harriet Lewis, Vice Chairman of Grand Circle Corporation. The company specializes in international travel and adventure for Americans aged 50 or older. Lewis says that travel can make a difference in our lives as individuals, and in the lives of those we come in contact with. “During a recent trip to Egypt, I climbed Mount Sinai late at night in order to see the sunrise. The experience changed my life,” says Lewis. “The Middle East was an area of the world I had explored before, but not in such depth, and spending time

As a doctor specializing in nutrition and weight loss, I’ve been helping people navigate life’s

Take steps toward a healthier lifestyle For many, taking the first step toward healthy living can seem overwhelming. But eating more fruits and vegetables, taking walks, washing your hands, and improving the well-being of your community are all easy ways to become a bit healthier. In fact, according to the American Public Health Association (APHA), nearly 1 million Americans die each year from diseases that can be prevented by living a healthier lifestyle.

Helping seniors drive safer, longer Since January 2011, nearly 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day, joining the fastest growing age group in the nation. From understanding how vision changes affect one’s ability to drive at night, to researching the effects certain medications can have on one’s driving ability, it’s important to get the facts about driving for seniors. Scottrade’s research found that more than half of Americans, at 55 percent, are actively planning their retirement without the help of an advisor. This do-it-yourself action plan seems to be working.
The majority of Americans did not see the value of their retirement accounts decline last year, and 73 percent reported the value of their retirement accounts either increased or stayed the same. For Americans who saw a decline in their account value, 67 percent expect to recover those
losses within 10 years. In response, a growing number of Americans are looking to save more in order to rebuild their retirement accounts, and 35 percent of Americans plan to save up to 10 percent more.

• To maintain normal energy levels, nine in ten (91 percent) recommend a B vitamin complex, and about three in four (72 percent) recommend an iron supplement. In addition, pharmacists are two times more likely to recommend a
protein-based product over a caffeine-based product for maintaining energy. To learn more about vitamin supplements and for more pharmacist recommendations, visit www. naturemade.com.
