Saving Money
Time-honored shopping tips by tammie gitt the sentinel
tgitt@cumberlink.com
Saving money at the grocery store often is a matter of remembering time-honored tricks and tips. The most common? Go with a list and stick to it. “That is, I think, a tried and true tip,” said Christopher Brand, spokesman for Giant Foods. “You make too many impulse purchases if you don’t have a list,” said Robyn Wampler, nutrition education coordinator at Project SHARE. Make that list part of a single trip to the grocery store each week. “The fewer trips to the store the less money you’ll spend,” Wampler said. Wampler said shoppers should be aware that product locations affect prices with the most expensive items being located at eyelevel. “You need to look up and down when you’re looking for something,” she said. Beware of the end caps. Items in that location are usually being promoted and companies pay for items to be put there, Wampler said. “It doesn’t necessarily mean they have some great price,” she said. Of course, it’s important to be careful while you’re waiting in line to check out. “Anything near the cash register is probably not a good deal,”

Are more cancer patients surviving?
Yes. Positively.
Does she consider her work “optimistic and uplifting?”
Irina Sachelarie, M.D.
Her own mother was diagnosed with cancer when Dr. Sachelarie was finishing her residency. That may explain her choice of specialty and her focus on making patients feel comfortable. “Patients develop closer relationships with their oncologists. They feel the actions we take save their lives,” she said. Today, she notes there are multiple treatment options for different cancers. “One model doesn’t fit everyone. We customize each treatment plan.” For more information or to find a physician, please go to CarlisleRMC.com or call 1-855-249-CRMC.

Wampler said. Wampler also advised shopping from the perimeter of the store — the meat, dairy and produce aisles. “It might seem a little expensive, but it’s the best deal for the money,” she said. Buying from the perimeter of the store means buying perishable items. Wampler said shoppers should be careful about the quantities they purchase. “If you are buying perishable food, you shouldn’t buy any more than you’re going to use,” she said. Knowing how to properly store perishable items is also key to saving money. Wampler said items, for the most part, should be kept in cool storage. Be careful of storing things near the refrigerator or the stove. “Don’t put your potatoes and onions under the sink. They will sprout,” Wampler said. She also advised practicing a “first-in, first-out” policy. Use the older items first and, when new items are brought into the house, make it a habit of putting them away

“The store can’t sell it after that date, but typically you have about a week after the date as long as it is handled and stored properly.” Robyn Wampler project Share
Shopping tips • Continued from D4 behind the items already in the pantry. “Otherwise, you can end up with something in the back of your cabinet that’s been there for five years and you forgot about it,” Wampler said. You can also save money by knowing and understanding the dating codes on products. The “sell by” date has to do with the store’s respon-
sibility. “The store can’t sell it after that date, but typically you have about a week after the date as long as it is handled and stored properly,” Wampler said. “Best by” dates refer to quality. You usually have a quite a bit of time after that, Wampler said. The product won’t necessarily be bad for you, but it won’t be at its best quality. “Use by” means what it says, Wampler said. As
with “best by” products, these products may not be bad for you but the quality deteriorates. Expiration dates are usually found on baby food and formula. “You don’t want to use them after the date,” Wampler said. Taking on a little more of the food-preparation work also can result in big savings. For example, Wampler said you can buy a hunk of cheese and slice
it or grate it yourself. In this case the savings have to be balanced with the time investment. “It also comes down to whether you are a convenience shopper or want to do a little bit extra to save
money,” Brand said. Shop special sales. Giant holds a sale on non-perishable items in January each year. Brand said it offers a chance for shoppers to get back to the basics after the holidays.
He said shoppers should pay attention to the circulars. Not only is this where the sale items are listed for each week but also where

Shopping tips • Continued from D5 additional in-store coupons can be found. Buying the store brand instead of the national brand can also result in savings without sacrificing quality, Brand said. Don’t take the children — or anyone else

Favorite frugality tips from the community Many have dropped their landlines and rely solely on their cellphones. by tammie gitt the sentinel
tgitt@cumberlink.com
The best money-saving tips come from experience, but most of us probably find we can be frugal in one area while being a spendthrift in another. That’s why sharing our favorite tips can be so helpful. Some of my favorite tips revolve around music and finding as much of it as possible for as little money as possible. Here in Cumberland County,
we’re privileged to have a number of colleges and universities within reasonable driving distance. Take advantage of the free or local cost concerts offered by the students and faculty. I rarely buy music on the day it comes out and even less rarely, if ever, do I buy physical CDs. I do, however, faithfully check Amazon on the first of every month to see what’s on the list of $5 albums for the month.

Michele Farner, a Boiling Springs native living in Rockwall, Texas, suggests hanging laundry out to dry as much as possible to save money on electric bills as compared to using the clothes dryer. Rachel Yucius commented, “Have your home air sealed and increase your insulation levels to be more long term energy efficient.” Norma Shacklock recommended using coupons when food shopping. Karen Shields Kunick recommended using a cash budget. Greta Andrusyszyn wrote, “Go to Bosler Memorial Library for books and DVDs!” “Never buy anything new,” Averi Stevens wrote. Kimberly Largent-Christopher commented, “When I grocery shop, I use a basket instead of a cart. When the basket is filled, my shopping is done. Doing this tones upper body muscles, thus eliminating the need for a gym membership. More savings.” Tara Jones had a couple of
tips for grocery shopping. First, never shop hungry and stick to a list unless it’s something that you know you’ll need. “I even take a snack along if need be to munch on in the car,” Jones wrote. She also suggested looking at the sale flyers online and typing up a list of wanted items that are on store. Then, she said to decide at which store to buy the items based on where they are on sale. “We also utilize thrift stores for clothing and certain household items,” Jones wrote. Find ‘free’ money in your recycling bin by tammie gitt the sentinel

Sometimes a little extra money is as close as the recycling bin outside the back door. “Just about anything can be recycled,” said Teresa Hockenberry of Cumberland Recycling, 121 Stover Dr. “If we don’t take it someone else will.” Cumberland Recycling accepts metals of any type. “We take aluminum, copper, brass, light steel, heavy steel, cast iron, lead, stainless steel,” Hockenberry said. “As long as they weigh a pound when we take them in.” Each type of metal has a different price and even each type of aluminum is priced differently, she said. Hockenberry said market forces drive the pricing so it’s best to call in advance to see what the prices are on a particular day. “For a while last summer, my price for copper changed three times in one day,” she said. Those belongings sometimes turn out to be far more valuable than their owners believed. “I’ve had people that were surprised at their paychecks,” she said. Warner said items are considered antiques if they are more than 100-years old. Vintage items should date from the 1970s or earlier. Popular items for consignment sale include all types of glassware from china to milk bottles to cut glass dishes. “I think everybody, at one particular time, used to collect a pattern of some sort,” Warner said. Retro items — those items dating from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s — are huge right now, she said. “The greater demand, really, right now is collectible advertising,” Warner said. “I can’t keep them in here.” Jason Malmont/The Sentinel Collectible advertising includes items such as Vickie Hardy, owner of Haar’s Auction, Dillsburg, points to the wide variety of

Selling • Continued from F2 embossed milk bottles and porcelain advertising signs, Warner said. Advertising for local businesses is particularly popular. Selling items at the shop starts with bringing in the items. “I take a look at it. We agree on what I think I can get them for it,” Warner said. When an agreement is made,
paperwork is signed and the item is catalogued. When the item sells, the seller is paid. Items accepted for sale at the store also are posted on Warner’s eBay store and on icollect247.com, a website through which dealers can sell vintage items. From these online stores, Warner has shipped purchases to locations throughout the world, including Portugal, Russia, Germany and Canada.
The speed with which an item sells depends on the item. “Some are more collectible than others. The more unique items will sell the quickest,” Warner said. On average, items are in the store and listed online for 30 days before being sold. Some more expensive items, however, may take longer — such as the working 1920s refrigerator Warner has in the front of the shop chilling bottles of water.

People should simply bring a current driver’s license to the auction in order to get a bidder’s number. “Then, just look in all the rooms to see what they want to bid on and be there when the bidding happens,” Hardy said. Payment for any purchased items will be expected on-site and cash is preferred, although approved checks are accepted, Hardy said. But make sure to research before bidding on items, Hardy said, and keep a budget in mind while bidding.

Owner Brent Saville said he and his wife started the business to help others and build relationships with their customers. “We know what it’s like to have to go out and buy clothes and food and gas with kids,” he said. Saville asks people wishing to sell clothing to call ahead. The store does limit the amount of clothing brought in at one time because of the time it takes to process them. “We try to thoroughly inspect the items,” Saville said. “If we were going somewhere,
The payment offered at SaVillage isn’t equivalent to what consignment stores might offer, but it’s money up front as opposed to payment given when the item sells. For example, Saville might offer 50 cents per item for a children’s item in good condition, Saville said. When SaVillage sells the clothes, the prices are kept as low as possible to keep customers coming back, Saville said. A look around the store showed signs with prices ranging from

Saving Money
Group educates locals on managing finances by tammie gitt the sentinel
tgitt@cumberlink.com
The work of Maranatha– Carlisle may be complex, but executive director Joan Jones explains it fairly simply: “We manage people’s money,” Jones said. “We pay their bills with their money.” Maranatha–Carlisle was formed when Jones and her husband were computerizing the records of Samaritan Fellowship, a ministry of local churches which funds emergency needs. Many of those who came to Samaritan Fellowship had the emergency needs because of poor choices in spending money. Samaritan Fellowship did have counselors, but those efforts didn’t work because people didn’t follow through on the recommendations, Jones said. In 2003, Maranatha– Carlisle began as a branch of Maranatha, a financial counseling ministry in Chambersburg. It achieved independent status in 2006. “I think we’re successful when it comes to getting people on a firm financial footing,” said Linda Rydberg, social services manager, — and the agency’s first volunteer and employee. Rydberg said people who work with Maranatha have money for rent, utilities, medications and even fines. The agency has been able to help purchase cars and negotiate payments with creditors for medical bills. “We’ve take a lot of the stress and anxiety out of finances for people,” Rydberg said. Along the way, Jones and Rydberg have found ways to put more money into the pockets of their clients — strategies also applicable to people who don’t use the agency’s services. Rydberg said the first thing
to do is to take a second look at your W-4, the form employers use to make sure the right amount of federal taxes are withheld from an employee’s paycheck. Often, people — especially families with children — will not claim sufficient exemptions. That means a big refund come tax time, but Rydberg said making the appropriate changes to the W-4 can spread that money out over the year. “It’s basically getting the tax help ahead of time,” she said. Instead of getting thousands of dollars at one time as a tax refund to pay all the overdue bills that have accumulated over the year, you would have potentially hundreds of dollars more each month to ensure those bills stay current, Rydberg said. R y d b e rg a d d e d t h a t the W-4 can be changed through the year. “Something very basic and simple is making a list of all your expenses,” Jones said. With that list, you compare expense to income then take the next step — cutting expenses or increasing income, she said. Jones also advised against buying furniture and appliances from rent-to-own stores. “These rent-toown places come out much higher than it costs to purchase (with cash),” she said. “You’re going to pay more than it’s worth,” Rydberg said. Usually, the attraction to such places, especially for those with low incomes, is that less money is needed up front. Rydberg suggests people put an amount of money aside to prepare for purchasing furniture or appliances so they can pay cash. They should also avoid anticipation loans on income tax returns, Rydberg said. In those cases, people are not only paying interest in a tax-anticipation loan but
Dean’s
they are also paying to have someone prepare the taxes. Jones said those with low incomes can have their taxes prepared free through the Employment Skills Center. Jones recommended staying away from the lottery — money spent in hopes of a big payday could be put aside in savings. Likewise, young workers should start early and put small amounts of money away consistently for retirement. “Make it small enough that you’re not going to raid the account,” Rydberg said. One of the most powerful things people can do is to be truthful about their financial situation. “Don’t try to live up to someone else’s situation,” Rydberg said. Rydberg and Jones agree the end result of being truthful about finances and taking steps to manage them is worth the effort. “It’s so freeing to be financially independent,” Jones said.
