2012 Land Rover Range Evoque Compact Crossover Is bold and loaded. ■

By Mike Blake Carlisle Events

A major player in the luxury sports-utility niche is Land Rover, the second oldest four-wheeldrive car brand in the world, behind only Jeep. First launched by the Rover Co. in 1948, Land Rover has earned a 64-year reputation for delivering tough, durable, goanywhere, 4-wheel-drive utility vehicles without sparing comfort or tech. Now owned by Tata Motors of India, Land Rover continues to produce safe, sturdy, hightech and high-ticket off-roaders. That tradition takes another step with the all-new 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, assembled in Halewood, U.K. The name Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a mouthful, but the parent, Land Rover, is marketing the Range Rover line as a hip, fashionable road-toy badge, keeping its more conservative vehicles for the Land Rover line.

Smallest Land Rover A compact crossover (nothing is a mere sports utility vehicle anymore), Range Rover Evoque is the smallest vehicle Land Rover has ever built, and it is the company’s first two-door model – a base four-door version is also available. Some 16 inches-plus shorter than the Range Rover Sport, Evoque is also the lightest and most fuelefficient Range Rover ever produced, at 3680 lbs. with an EPA rating of 18mpg in city driving and 28 on the highway. Evoque measures 171.5 inches long, 77.4 inches wide and 64.4 inches high on a 104.8inch wheelbase with a minimum ground clearance of 8.5 inches. Engineers say that it can successfully attack 19 inches of ground or stream water.

Classic Styling Exterior design cues feature new interpretations of the classic Range Rover personality, including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid wheel-at-each-corner stance. New for the brand, Evoque adopts a dynamic profile with its rising beltline, a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, and a distinctive taper to the floating roofline. The sculpted corners reduce the car’s visual overhangs front and rear and ultra-high-

strength boron steel in the A- and B-pillars retain the slim profile without compromising strength or safety. Exterior enhancements include back-up camera, power windows, panoramic roof, sunroof with sunshield, rear spoiler, fog lamps, auto-off headlights, rear parking aid, power liftgate, intermittent rain-sensing wipers and heated mirrors.

Intelligent Drive System The lightweight Evoque utilizes an innovative full-time intelligent all-wheel drive system which continuously varies the front/rear torque split using an electronically controlled Haldex center coupling to deliver optimum grip and balance for the current driving conditions. The transverse, front-engine, all-wheel drive SUV is powered by a turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter inline 4 engine that puts out 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, the system delivers an agile and responsive ride that accomplished a zero-to-60mph sprint in 7.2 seconds en route to a 15.9-second quarter-mile. Even with time on the track, on Premium fuel, my test fried averaged a flat 20mpg in mixed-use driving. On the highway, Evoque handles more like a car than like a traditional sports-ute, as its independent MacPherson strut front and rear suspension with stabilizer bars, and electric speed-proportional power steering coupled with Continental Cross Contact 235/55R19 tires smooth out pavement inconsistencies while the stiff ride handles corners with only a little sway and no truckiness. Off road, Evoque can play well. The Terrain Response system offers different settings as needed to adapt to the conditions, and the crossover is steadied by Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release Control to help stabilize and control the vehicle during tough descents.

luxury and tech, but its small physique seems to impact roominess. With seating for five, front headroom is 40.3 inches with 39.7 in the rear seats, but the perception is that it is closer to 38 inches. Legroom and shoulder hip figures were not released when this vehicle was test driven, but cramped legroom feels like 36 inches. Evoque’s cabin is endowed with LED ambient lighting that provides illumination at night, with a range of colors that can be chosen by the driver. Standard cabin features include an alarm, vehicle anti-theft system, cruise control, keyless start and entry, adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel, power steering, trip computer, climate control, front floor mats, power door locks, electrochromic rearview mirror, mirror memory, power driver mirror and premium front and rear seat entertainment with the option package. Safety is attended to with front and rear head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags, passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation, 4-wheel anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, emergency brake assist, corner brake control, emergency braking assist, ventilated front disc / Well-Endowed Cabin solid rear disc brakes, rear door Inside, Evoque is packed with child safety locks, engine immo-

The Evoque Pure (base model) starts at $43,995, the Prestige at $52,395 and the Dynamic at $51,495. My Pure in Fuji White mated to a Cirrus /Lunar Grained leather interior added the Climate Comfort Package for $1,000 (heated windscreen, front seats and steering wheel, heated washer jets); and Premium Package for $4000 (Navigation system, 825watt Meridian Surround Sound

Behind the Wheel

Chrysler 300 Sedan still turns heads With its Hemi V-8, the 2012 Sedan is one of the least fuel efficient compared to its rivals. ■

By ANN M. JOB For The Associated Press

The Chrysler 300 flagship sedan offers style on a grand scale and a roomy interior reminiscent of the big American sedans of yesteryear. But the V-8-powered SRT8 version of the 300 provides another, less nostalgic blast from the past: It guzzles gas. The 470-horsepower, 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8, with the performance to rival pricier Mercedes-Benz and Lexus sedans, has a government fuel economy rating of only 14 miles a gallon in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. That’s worse than the V-8powered 2012 Jaguar XJ and Lexus LS 460 and even the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with V-8. But no one would confuse the expressive Chrysler 300 with a truck, a Jaguar or a Lexus. Revamped over the past two years but still using the same rearwheel-drive platform, the Chrysler 300 seems like a new, full-size sedan. What once looked like a Bentley now has a more modern headlight shape, light-emitting diode daytime running lamps and a blackcolored grille that adds a sinister, yet attractive flair to the 300 SRT8. Inside, the 2012 300 SRT8 has an upscale appearance, with standard seat covering that feels and looks like real leather, 12-way power adjustments on both front seats, real carbon fiber trim, richer-than-

TYPE: Front-engine, rear-wheeldrive, five-passenger, large performance sedan. ENGINE: 6.4-liter, overhead valve, 90-degree, Hemi V-8. MILEAGE: 14 mpg (city), 23 mpg (highway). TOP SPEED: 175 mph. LENGTH: 200.3 inches. WHEELBASE: 120.2 inches. CURB WEIGHT: 4,365 pounds. BUILT AT: Brampton, Ontario, Canada. expected carpeting and a built-in Garmin-based navigation system with an 8.4-inch display. Best of all, the 2012 300 SRT8, which weighs more than 2 tons and stretches a full 16.7 feet long, rides comfortably and handles well. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $28,995 for a base 2012 300 sedan with 292-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6. The 2012 300 SRT8, with 6.4liter, Hemi V-8 producing 45 more horsepower than the previous V-8, has a starting retail price of $48,995. This includes a $1,000 gas guzzler tax imposed by the federal government. Competitors to the 300 SRT8 can include the 365-horsepower, 2012 Ford Taurus SHO sedan, which has a starting retail price of $38,950 with 3.5-liter, turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, the 380-horsepower,

A 2012 Chrysler 300 is displayed at the 41st annual South Florida International Auto Show in Miami Beach, Fla. The 2012 300, with a 6.4-liter, Hemi V-8 producing 45 more horsepower than the previous V-8, has a starting retail price of $48,995. This includes a $1,000 gas guzzler tax imposed by the federal government. 2012 Lexus LS 460 with 4.6-liter V-8 has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $68,005, and the 2012 Mercedes S550 with 429-horsepower V-8 starts at $95,375. Some of today’s V-8 sedans, overworked with electronics and controls, don’t quite convey the forceful power that a V-8 can provide. But the Hemi V-8 in the 300 SRT8 is a throwback pushrod engine with overhead valves, and the transmission is a five-speed automatic. While technology plays a role — specifically operating a two-stage variable intake and exhaust-valve timing system — the 300 SRT8’s low-end “oomph” or torque comes on fast at both low and higher speeds. I squealed the tires backing up into my garage and zoomed for-

ward on highways with smooth force. Torque peaks at 470 footpounds at 4,300 rpm, which is up 50 foot-pounds from last year’s V8. Now, the sedan goes from 0 to 60 in a sporty 4.4 seconds, which is better than the 5.4 seconds that the LS 460 and S550 sedans boast. The average fuel economy over combined city and highway travel was just 14.8 mpg. This translated into a 282-mile travel range on a single, 19.1-gallon tank. Chrysler advises to use premium gasoline to get peak performance. People on the streets, hearing the engine growl, would stop to see what was coming. The big sedan and its Black Vapor, dark spoke wheels and low-profile, 20-inch tires held their attention. Some tire noise came through as I drove on rough pavement, but the 300 SRT8 tester also was un-

expectedly quiet at stoplights and on new asphalt. There’s considerable sound insulation, and the optional uplevel stereo system delivered crystal clear sounds. Everyone but the middle rear passenger gets a generous amount of room on well-padded seats. In fact, sitting in the back seat with front seat up a bit on its 10.6-inch track, I stretched my legs and crossed them with ease. A full 41.8 inches of legroom are available in the front seats and just over 40 inches in the back seat. Not even a Cadillac Escalade offers this much rear-seat legroom. By comparison, rear legroom in the Lexus LS 460 is 35.8 inches, and the Taurus has 38.1 inches. However, because of the drive tunnel hump in the middle of the 300’s rear floor, the middle person back there has no convenient spot to put his or her legs.

Vehicle title washing woes Cleaning up the mystery. ■

When you buy a used car, you’re happy if the seller vacuums the interior and gives the exterior a good wash and wax before you take possession. But there’s one kind of “cleanup” that you want to avoid when you’re buying used: title washing. T i t l e - o r “ b ra n d ” washing occurs when a seller takes steps to hide the damaged or totaled condition of a vehicle. When a vehicle is damaged or declared a total loss due to flood, fire, accident, natural disaster or other circumstance, the state in which it’s titled will “brand” the title, noting the condition on the document. Unscrupulous sellers circumvent the branding by repairing or camouflaging the damage and then titling the vehicle in a different state. “What title washing means for consumers is that they can end up paying far more for a salvaged or totaled vehicle than it’s worth, thinking they’re buying a used vehicle in good condition,” says Joshua Steffan, director for Experian Automotive. “Often,

a buyer will be unaware of the vehicle’s true condition until they’ve completed the purchase, driven the vehicle and started to experience problems related to the hidden damage.” Bureau of Transportation statistics indicate that in any given year, the number of used car sales is about three times the number of new vehicle sales. With the recession driving demand for used vehicles over the past few years, incidences of title washing have also increased. In fact, during the first six months of 2011, 257,245 vehicles were initially branded and then transferred or retitled in a second state with a clean title, according to the AutoCheck vehicle history report database. In 2008, that happened to just 185,000 vehicles. Most of the title washed vehicles in 2011 were branded as salvage (39 percent) or rebuildable (26 percent). Title washing also tends to increase in regions that have experienced a natural disaster, like a hurricane. In such situations, flood waters will often leave many vehicles unusable and many states will brand a vehicle’s title as flood damaged. So how can you protect

yourself from the risk of buying a title-washed vehicle? Steffan offers some advice: • Check the vehicle’s background by purchasing a vehicle history report. Most title-washed cars keep their original vehicle identification numbers (VIN), which is all you need to order an AutoCheck report. The report includes information on the status of the title (including if it’s been branded), a check of possible problems, an odometer check, the history of how the vehicle was used (as a rental or private vehicle) and any events, such as accidents or flood damage that have been reported on the vehicle. You’ll also get the ZIP code of where the vehicle has been registered, and you can use online resources to match that information to regions where the vehicle might have been exposed to floods or other natural disasters. • Have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic. Some title washers, however, are pros and may have reconstructed a car so well that it’s hard for even a professional to tell. • When you first see the vehicle, look for discoloration on seats, seatbelts or

door panels that might indicate mineral deposits left behind by flood waters. You may see moisture on the inside of the instrument panel. Do a sniff test. A water-damaged vehicle might smell moldy or musty. Or, it might smell strongly of potent cleansers that the seller has used to mask the odor of mold. • Fresh paint on newermodel cars may indicate the vehicle has been in an accident and had bodywork done. Mismatched panels and extremely low mileage may also be red flags. • Always check to ensure the VIN on the vehicle’s paperwork matches the one on the vehicle. The location of the VIN varies from vehicle to vehicle, but you’ll often find it on a small metal plate in the corner of the windshield nearest the driver. Other locations include on the engine or engine block, or the right front wheel well. “Ultimately, a title check from a vehicle history report is the optimum way to know as much as possible about a vehicle you’re considering buying,” Steffan says. “A modest investment can help you avoid making a costly mistake.” Courtesy of ara.com

Chevrolet Sonic sedan is driven around the test track at the GM Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan.

GM recalls Chevy Sonic to check brake pads More than 4,000 cars expected to be recalled. ■

Associated press

DETROIT — General Motors Co. said on Friday that it is recalling more than 4,000 of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars to check for missing brake pads. The possibility that some Sonics could be missing an inner or outer brake pad was discovered during warranty service for a rental vehicle customer. GM said the problem “is expected to exist in

very few cars,” and there are no known crashes or injuries related to the issue. A missing pad could require longer stopping distance, and contribute to a crash. The recall involves 4,296 of GM’s 2012 Sonics sold in the U.S. The affected models are from the Orion Township, Mich., assembly plant, where the Sonic is built for sale in the U.S. and Canada. Dealers will inspect the front brakes for missing inner or outer pads and, if a pad is missing, install new pads. If needed, a new brake caliper or brake rotor, or both, will also be installed.

fore driving becomes a problem, advises Lee. Car accidents, near misses, selfregulation of driving and health changes all provide opportunities to talk about driving skills. There’s nothing that can make this conversation an easy one, but there are ways you can promote productive dialogue. If you determine that there’s reason for concern about your loved one’s ability to drive, approaching the situation in a thoughtful and nonthreatening way is important. “Comments about how much more congested traffic has become recently or about an accident in the news can be a good way to start a conversation about driving safety,” says Lee. In addition to offering safety courses for older drivers at www.aarp. org/drive, AARP also offers an online seminar for those who may need to approach the topic of driving with older family members at www.aarp.org/weneedtotalk. Starting the conversation is often the most difficult part and your approach can set the tone for how it proceeds. Here are a few suggestions for starting the conversation in a nonthreatening way that will make the older driver more comfortable expressing his or her feelings. • “Did you hear about the car accident in the news today?” • “Have you asked your doctor about the effects of your new medication on your driving?”

• “That was a close call yesterday. I worry about your safety on the road.” •“I’m worried about you getting in a car accident with all the ice and snow on the road.” • “I’m glad that you’ve cut down on night driving. I would never want you to drive when you’re not comfortable or feel that it’s too risky.”

Some other tips • Prepare for the conversation and do your homework. • Choose the right messenger and the right time. • Be supportive, positive, factual and nonthreatening. • Have transportation alternatives ready. • Note that it might take more than one conversation to address the issue. Let the person know you’re there whenever he or she is interested in chatting about the subject. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when addressing problems your older driver may be having behind the wheel. Some issues can be remedied with improvements in physical fitness, increased attention and driving safety classes. Other situations may call for more immediate action. Preparing vehicle for harsh winter weather This year, millions of Americans will be hitting the roads and facing cold temperatures, along with the snowy and icy conditions winter weather brings. These factors are not only a nuisance, but at times, very dangerous, even for the most confident and experienced drivers. Simple driving maneuvers, such as starting, stopping and making turns can become very challenging if vehicles are not properly prepared for inclement weather. After their homes, the second-largest financial investment for most is their vehicle; helping it stay in good working order during the colder months of the year should be a top priority. Because money is often tight in the given economy, you may be reluctant to spend on services or maintenance that could be put off, at least for the short term. Such decisions, however, could potentially shorten the life of a vehicle, decrease its fuel efficiency or even help create unsafe driving. To prepare vehicles for the winter months ahead, here are some simple tips to help you.

Traction is key The economy has forced many to postpone tire purchases, but with wet weather and unpredictable winter conditions ahead, now is not the time to have low tread on your tires. Your tires need good traction to help keep your car on the road. It’s important to have the correct tire tread and in particularly

cold climates, drivers should consider investing in winter tires. The Winter Reactive Technology used in Goodyear’s Ultra Grip Ice WRT tires offer a combination of innovative tire features to help drivers react to changing weather conditions with enhanced starting, stopping and turning traction for superior performance on the roads. Winter driving experts such as the ILR Car Control School, located in Mount Albert, Ontario, choose Goodyear UGI Ice WRT for superior performance

Feel the pressure As temperatures change, so does tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotive safety, optimum driving performance and even good fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box and should be checked at least monthly. Over-inflation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear and underinflation reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent.

Keep it clean Keeping vehicles clean will help protect them from the chemicals and dirt that may attack the car’s finish and undercarriage. Be sure to use quality cleaners and waxes specifically designed for handling a car’s finish. Courtesy of ara.com

How to keep your garage tidy during winter season How technology can play a big factor in keeping your space organized. ■

As the American home has continued to evolve with the speed of new technology, so has the garage. In order to keep up with the everyday busy lives of homeowners and the need for these homeowners to spread out and utilize all the space within their homes, garages have become a new frontier for functioning space within the home. The majority of homeowners use the garage as the main entrance way into their homes, making the garage door and its opener imperative to the security of the home,

protecting the people and property behind it. Before, garage doors only opened and closed to let your car in and out of the garage, and you had to be there to do it. But garage doors and openers have improved dramatically in the last decade to do more. If you’re interested in upgrading your home’s security and curb appeal, don’t forget to check out some of the newest high-tech features: • Control from anywhere around the world: Garage door openers are high tech now, and the LiftMaster openers with MyQ Technology allow you to control your garage door - as well as other household items - from inside your house, while at the office or even from halfway across the world by using your

computer or smartphone. This technology lets you monitor if the garage door is opened or closed and allows you the freedom to operate it from a remote location, perhaps to grant access to a family member or allow a delivery. • Electronic eyes - New garage door openers come with safety sensors that prevent the door from closing if something were to be underneath. If an object breaks the beam of infrared light spanning the width of the door, the garage door won’t close - and if something were to cross the sensor as the door is closing, it would cause the door to reverse direction and open up again. This can help protect small children and pets from being struck by the closing door. • Timers for closing - You’ve

probably forgotten to close your garage door after pulling out of the driveway at least once in your life, leaving your home and property wide open to anyone passing by. New garage door openers allow you to customize the settings on your garage door opener to ensure that the door will close after one minute, five minutes or even 10 minutes of being open. • Power out? Not a problem - The harsh winter weather can leave many homes without power for extended periods of time. LiftMaster openers are equipped with battery backup, which is very useful during a power failure in severe weather conditions, providing your family with reliable, uninterrupted access to your home and automobiles in the garage.

• Shed light on safety - Exterior lights also have seen technology upgrades, and when placed next to your garage, can deter unwanted visitors. Save money with solar powered lights, or lights that are motion-activated to brightly shine when something approaches the garage. In addition to discouraging unwanted visitors, lights also give your family members a safer environment when arriving home after dark. Using new technology in and around your garage helps you maintain security and safety and can improve your life in so many different ways.
