2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE

Family sedan delivers 40 mpg The 2012 Camry Hybrid has a 30 percent increase in fuel economy over previous versions. ■

T h e Toyo ta C a m ry – America’s best-selling sedan for nine years running and 13 of the past 14 years – is now in its seventh generation, and this year’s model has been redesigned with bold, sophisticated styling, a roomier interior, improved driving dynamics and a quieter ride than gen-six. Introduced in 1983, the midsize now sports luxury attributes and its hybrid version is top in its class in fuel economy. A member of the extended range and alternative propulsion niche, Camry Hybrid was launched in 2006 for the 2007 model year. New for the 2012 Camry Hybrid, which can run on either gasoline alone, electric battery alone or a combination of the two, is an EV Drive mode allows the driver to operate the car on the electric motor alone for up to 1.6 miles at speeds below 25 mph. The all-new Camry Hybrid debuts a highly revised version of the brand’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, including a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder aluminum alloy block engine that puts out 156hp and 156 lbs-ft of torque and has an aluminum alloy head. Working with its Permanent Magnet AC Synchronous Electric Motor with a power output of 105kW/4,500 rpm, the system’s net horsepower is 200hp, with a net torque of 199 lbs-ft. The set-up, mated to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission is EPA rated at 43/39/41 for the LE trim and 40/38/40 for the XLE, a 30 percent increase in fuel economy over previous versions. An improved system is partially responsi-

ble for the gain in fuel stinginess, but at 3441 pounds, it is about 250 pounds lighter than a 2011 Camry Hybrid I tested, and fine-tuned aerodynamics and 17-inch lower rolling resistance tires also help launch the vehicle more efficiently. During my weeklong test, I managed an average of 39.8mpg in mixed-use driving.

Contemporary Design The new design is one of contemporary themes with a wider, lower stance than the previous generation. Utilizing crisp character lines, a strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel molding, Camry brings home its new architecture with angular headlights, trapezoidal fog lights, a pronounced curvature of the main-beam unit merging into the bumper cover and rear lamp clusters that wrap tightly into the body sides, with their top sections extending into the trunk panel. Other exterior enhancements on the XLE trim include chrome-tipped exhaust, chrome garnish on trunk, integrated chrome trimmed fog lamps and heated outer mirrors. The 2012 Camry Hybrid is assembled on all-new platform, but its dimensions are as in the last version, measuring 189.2 inches long, 71.7 inches wide and 57.9 inches high on a 109.3-inch wheelbase, and a ground clearance of 6.1 inches.

sumption capability, Camry Hybrid delivers surprising power from a start and in passing range. With attentive throttle response, my test Camry Hybrid finished off a 7.2-second sprint from zero to 60mph and completed a quarter-mile in 15.7 seconds. The buzzword for successful transitions from electric motor to gasoline engine and back is “seamless.” Camry may not be perfectly seamless, but it is really close. And the ride is really quiet. At speed, the cabin is luxury-silent and at rest, the tendency is the make sure the motor is still activated. From a driver’s perspective, the Camry Hybrid rides like a larger vehicle, the electric steering is linear, the braking is confident and the vehicle is weighted precisely to minimize wobble or yaw during quick turns.

Upscale Cabin Inside, Camry is a roomy, upscale environment. With seating capacity for six, headroom is 38.8 inches in front and 37.9 inches in the rear, legroom measures 41.6 inches in row one and 38.9 inches in row two and shoulder room goes 58.0 and 56.6. Previous Camry cabins suffered from excessive use of hard plastics, but the 2012 version employs more soft surfaces, soft plastics and a generous use of contrasting-material textures. Finally, there’s a Buick LaCrosse sedan that puts many of today’s most topical fuel economy features into its base model, at no extra charge. The new, 2012 Buick LaCrosse lineup has a base model with four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor, with regenerative braking, wind-smoothing, aerodynamic touches and automatic engine stop at traffic lights, to deliver improved gasoline mileage. It’s called the LaCrosse with eAssist. A LaCrosse with only four cylinders isn’t offered anymore, because who would want it? The 2012 LaCrosse with eAssist delivers 6 more miles per gallon in both city and highway driving than a solitary four cylinder did in the 2011 LaCrosse, according to federal government estimates. Specifically, the 2012 LaCrosse with eAssist is rated by the federal government at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. This compares with 19/30 mpg for the 2011 LaCrosse with four cylinders and no eAssist. Better yet, real-world, combined city and highway driving, as opposed to government laboratory testing that provides those government fuel rankings, can net between 31

And Camry is packed with a plethora of upscale cabin comforts. From a safety perspective, Camry is outfitted with 10 standard airbags, a collision-impact absorbing body structure, vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. The standard 2012 Camry starts at $21,955 in L trim, and moves up to $24,725 base for the XLE trim. In Hybrid form, the LE starts at $25,900 with Standard acoustic noise-reducing front windshield, dual zone automatic climate control, BLU Logic® Hands Free System, Optitron instrumentation and metallic-tech-grain interior trim with chrome, interior door handles, while the upscale XLE bases at $27,400, adding integrated

fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. My test XLE was all decked out with several option packages including the Premium HDD navigation with Entune, 10-speaker JBL sound system with subwoofer and amp, leather, power adjustable heated seats, Blind Spot and Safety Connect package for $6320. The rear spoiler added $159, and delivery and handling
