Ever since Fiat merged with Chrysler Group, I have been waiting for my chance to drive one of the Italian fuel-savers, as it has been decades since I last drove a Fiat. My opportunity came when I got behind the wheel of the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth. The first Abarth, produced by Abarth & C, appeared in 1949, originated by Viennese champion motorcycle racer Karl Abarth. His 1949 Abarth 204A Roadster, derived from a Fiat 1100, won the Italian 1100 and Formula 2 championships and by 1956, the Abarth 750 was introduced and set numerous speed and endurance records. Abarth & C was absorbed into Fiat in 1971, and 40 years later, the Fiat 500 Abarth was introduced in the United States, with the Abarth motto first coined in the 1960s: “Small but wicked.” The Fiat 500 might not be a race car in the purest sense, but it is a fast, economical vehicle with some great tech, solid handling and performance for its niche. Faithful to the “small but wicked” catchphrase, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth offers performance and precision, purposeful and aggressive styling, high power-to-weight ratio and limited-production volume. Measuring only 144.4 inches long, 64.1 inches wide and 59.2 inches high on a 90.6-inch wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 4.1 inches, Fiat 500 Abarth weighs in at a confident 2512 lbs. The diminutive package yields an aggressive exterior specifically designed for aerodynamic efficiency, improved down force and maximum system cooling. A pronounced front fascia is stylistically blended to improve aerodynamics and the signature “Abarth” shield floats on a finned surface that serves as an additional air intake. Fast and economical Abarth power comes from the new 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine with a castiron block and an aluminum bedplate. Mated to a 5-speed heavy-duty manual transmission, the system puts out 160hp and 170 lbs-ft of torque. Working in concert with the turbo boost gauge, performance-tuned suspension and performance brake system, Abarth is a fun-to-drive eco-sports car that is EPA rated at a city/ highway/combined estimate of 28/34/31. My weeklong test yielded an impressive 33.3mpg. Also impressive was its acceleration, as track tests showed a zero-to-60mph sprint time of 6.8 seconds en route to a quarter-mile run of 15.4 seconds. On the highway, passing force was effortless and on twisty and autocross examinations, the chassis showed some play, but with dedicated throttle and brake work, Abarth hugs the surface firmly and the understeer and torque steer only add to the fun driving experience. Engine noise is readily apparent during acceleration, but acceptable during cruising.

Cozy interior yields safe environment The Abarth cockpit will seat four snugly, with 38.9 inches of front headroom and a head-bowing 35.5 inches in the rear; legroom is a comfortable 40.1 inches of front and a knee-bending 31.7 in row two and shoulder room goes 49.4 and 46.4.

Another $400 was added for the TomTom® Navigation device with touch screen controls, Eco Drive, and trip information. A year of Sirius XM Radio service plus automatic temperature control of a Micron filer and a security alarm added $600. Lexus GS gets F Sport treatment This fourthgeneration GS 350 vies to be the closest GS to the BMW’s 5Series sedan, with its well-known performance flair and image. ■

The re-engineered-for2013 Lexus GS 350 shows that a Lexus sedan can have an overtly sporty ride, a snarly-looking front end and a noticeable exhaust note, all while hewing to the brand’s high fit-and-finish reputation. Packaged in optional F Sport dress, this fourthgeneration GS 350 vies to be the closest GS to the BMW’s 5-Series sedan, with its well-known performance flair and image. But given that for every GS that Lexus sold in the United States last year BMW sold 14 of its 5-Series cars, the new GS 350 has a ways to go to convince shoppers of its sporty personality. Maybe this is why Lexus offers a lot for the money on its new, rear-wheel drive, mid-size GS. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $47,775 for a base model with 306-horsepower V-6 and automatic transmission. This compares with the $48,345 starting retail price for a 2012 BMW 528i that has a 240-horsepower, twin-turbo, four cylinder and automatic transmission. Standard equipment on the base, 2013 GS 350 includes leather-trimmed seats, keyless entry, pushbutton start, moonroof, 12-speaker audio system, rearview camera, 10-way, power-adjustable front seats and 10 air bags. A 2013 Lexus GS 350 with V-6 and all-wheel drive has a starting retail price of $50,325, while the starting retail price for a 2012 BMW 528i xDrive with four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive is $50,645. Another mid-size, luxury competitor is the 2012 Infiniti M37, which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $48,595. Standard items on the M37 include a 330-horsepower V-6, automatic transmission, leather interior, moonroof, six-speaker audio system, 10-way, power-adjustable front seats, rearview monitor, keyless entry, push-button start and six air bags. One of two main mid-size sedans at Lexus, the GS aims to challenge other rear-drive performance sedans.

The 2013 Lexus GS 350. New styling is the first visible clue to the changes that were made. The front “spindle” shape of the grille, as Lexus calls it, reminded me of a woman in a cinched corset and didn’t convey an upscale image. The back’s light-emitting diode taillamps reminded me of a BMW. The interior, however, impressed with comfortable seats, nicely laid out controls and a sizable, 12.3-inch (measured diagonally) display screen in the middle of the dashboard that provides clear, easy-to-read information. Fit and finish on the test GS 350 was impeccable, with seat material stitching and every gap between interior trim parts as well as steel sheet metal outside perfectly aligned. Since the tester had the optional F Sport package, it came with 19-inch wheels that were a dark color, not shiny silver, fitted with lowprofile tires. This made the GS 350 look sinister and definitely more youthful and sporty. But watch these

fancy wheels. They are easy to scrape against concrete curbs during parallel parking maneuvers, and the small amount of tire sidewall, plus an F Sport suspension, means road bumps can come through harshly to passengers. The overall GS size is about the same as last year’s model, stretching nearly 16 feet long, from bumper to bumper. This is just a couple inches shorter than a 5-Series sedan. But the underlying GS platform is new, with a slightly wider track and an inch more in height compared with the old GS. This provides a bit more interior room, especially in the back seat of the GS where headroom now measures 37.8 inches, which is about on par with the back seat of the M37. Legroom in the GS 350 back seat totals 36.3 inches, or about the same as the M37. Still, there’s a hump in the GS rear floor that a middle passenger has to contend with, and three adults sit closely in back. Trunk space of 14.3

cubic feet is accommodating. Passengers familiar with more refined rides in Lexus cars were surprised to hear the strong, throaty engine sounds from the test GS 350 F Sport. They also didn’t know what to make of the ride that readily conveyed road vibrations, even when the suspension setting was in normal mode. The 3.5-liter, double overhead cam, direct gasoline injection V-6 is mildly tweaked from last year for peak torque of 277 footpounds at 4,800 rpm. Power came smoothly and quickly through a six-speed automatic transmission, and zero-to-60-miles-perhour time is a sporty 5.7 seconds, according to Lexus. But enjoying the GS 350’s torquey “oomph” at startups and around slower cars took a toll on fuel mileage, as the tester averaged just under 20 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel. The federal government’s fuel economy rating for the 2013 GS 350 is 19 mpg in city

driving and 26 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the base 5Series with turbo four cylinder generates a healthy 260 foot-pounds, just 17 shy of the GS, and it comes on starting at a low 1,250 rpm while earning a government fuel mileage rating of 23/34 mpg. Note that premium gasoline goes into the GS, which at today’s prices meant a fillup of the 17.4-gallon tank in the tester came to more than $72 for about 365 miles of travel. The GS six-gear transmission seems a bit dated when compared with the 5-Series’ standard eight-gear automatic, and the M37’s seven speed. Steering in the GS 350 tester was crisp and precise, requiring virtually no adjustments in long sweeping curves. Be aware that the top-ofthe-line, sport-tuned GS 350 with F Sport package is pricey, especially when packaged as it was in the tester with other items for more than $13,000.

Honda quarterly profit jumps on improved sales Honda Motor Co.reported net profit of 71.5 billion yen ($882.7 million) for the fiscal fourth quarter. ■

TOKYO — Honda’s January-March profit jumped 61 percent as the Japanese automaker sold more cars and motorcycles in a turnaround from a disaster-battered 2011. It forecast record global sales of 4.3 million vehicles for this fiscal year. Honda Motor Co., which makes the Accord sedan, Fit subcompact and Asimo robot, reported net profit of 71.5 billion yen ($882.7 million) for the fiscal fourth quarter, up from 44.5 billion yen a year earlier. The results underline a recovery at all Japanese automakers from the sales plunge that hit last year after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disrupted the supply of auto parts from northeastern Japan. Tokyo-based Honda’s quarterly sales improved 8.7 percent to 2.41 trillion yen ($29.7 billion), mainly because of rising sales in Japan and North America. It achieved record quarterly sales of motorcycles at 3.5 million bikes, up nearly 18 percent from a year earlier, with demand especially robust in Asia and South America. Demand for its auto models was also strong, including the Odyssey minivan, the remodeled CR-V sportutility vehicle as well as hybrid models. For the fiscal year ended

March 31, Honda’s profit fell 60 percent to 211.4 billion yen due to the disruptions to production from the tsunami disaster in Japan and last year’s flooding in Thailand where Honda has assembly lines. The automaker has also been hurt by an unfavorable exchange rate. A strong yen erodes the overseas earnings of Japanese exporters such as Honda. The dollar been trading near 80 yen compared with 86 yen the previous year. But Honda is confident of a rebound, forecasting record global vehicle sales and an annual net profit of 470 billion yen — more than double what it earned last fiscal year. It sold 3.1 million vehicles worldwide for the fiscal year ended March 31. The recovery tale is likely to be repeated at other Japanese automakers. Japan’s No. 1 automaker Toyota Motor Corp. reports earnings May 9. Nissan Motor Co., the nation’s No. 2 automaker, reports earnings May 11. Not so upbeat were the results at Mazda Motor Corp., whose January-March profit slipped to 5.1 billion yen ($63 million) from 9.9 billion yen a year earlier. For the fiscal year ended March, Mazda’s losses ballooned from 60 billion yen to 107 billion yen ($1.3 billion) as vehicle sales declined across all regions except for North America.
