Chevrolet Camaro 2SS:

Camaro was introduced in 1966 for the ’67 model year and became an iconic Pony Car from the outset. Through four generations and 35 years, Camaro, which had a pre-launch code name of Panther, was a catlike performer, and a winner at the track, on the streets and at the dealerships until the turn of the 21st century, when sales slowed. Brought back in 2009, the Camaro has been a world beater, a “Transformers” star and a head-turning track and street champion the second time around, even performing and winning in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Four years into the second incarnation of Camaro, the muscle car has upgraded with the return of its road-racing inspired 1LE performance package with unique gearing, suspension tuning and tires that make the model capable of more than 1g of lateral acceleration. Also new for 2013, all Camaro SS models now feature variable-effort electric power steering and an available dual-mode exhaust system on manual transmissionequipped models. Both features were introduced on the Camaro ZL1. Beginning this year, all Camaro models offer a wider range of choices and enhancements including: Chevrolet MyLink and color-touch radio with GPS map navigation; Hill start assist is now standard on all manual transmissions; a ZL1-style shift knob standard on all manual transmissions and remote vehicle start is now included on 1LT and 1SS with automatic transmission.

that measures 190.4 inches long, 75.5 inches wide and 54.3 inches high on a 112.3inch wheelbase. The manual SS weighs a robust 3860 lbs. (curbweight) while the automatic transmission adds 53 lbs. American muscle is personified with a black hood (on my SS2 1LE test model), Camaro-slit grille, an integrated decklid spoiler, quad exhaust finishers, cooling ducts, four fog lights, a wide-mouth intake on the lower fascia and 20-inchby-1 0 - i n c h a l u m i n u m wheels. The four-passenger,frontengine, rear-drive coupe is built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and employs a unitized body frame, multi-link strut front suspension with a direct-acting stabilizer bar; progressive-rate coil springs; 27 mm solid stabilizer bar matched with a 4.5link independent rear with progressive-rate coil springs over shocks; stabilizer bar; 28mm solid stabilizer bar and specific half-shafts.

Power at all levels The 2013 Camaro power lineup includes the 323horsepower V-6-powered LS coupe and LT coupe and convertible with an EPArated 30 mpg on the highway; the 6.2-liter V-8 that delivers up to 426 horsepower on the SS coupe and convertible and the 580horsepower supercharged Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible. My 6.2-liter engine was good for 426 horses and 420 lbs.-ft. of torque, and performed like a street-legal

The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS features an updated look on the 35-year-old model. race car with blazing speed and performance in all ranges. With a very forgiving sixspeed manual transmission, I blasted through a zero-to60 mph sprint in 5-seconds flat en route to a 13.5-second quarter-mile. Thirsty in town, but generous on the highway, my Camaro SS2 was EPA rated at 16/24 and I averaged 17.9 mpg in mixeduse tests, but close to 25 mpg on the interstate.

Nostalgic and contemporary interior The cabin is packed with comfortable, intuitive items that merge nostalgia with 21st century tech, luxury and comfort. Ambient lighting, a heads-up display, entertainment and information centers and climate control highlight the cabin that provides seating for four with 37.4 inches of front headroom with 35.3 inches in row two, legroom of 42.4 in row

one and a tight 29.9 for rear seats, and shoulder room of 56.9 inches in the first seats and 42.5 behind. Sa fe ty i te m s i n c l u d e dual-stage frontal, and thorax side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger airbags, and head curtain side-impact, front and rear outboard seating positions bags and includes the Passenger Sensing System. Camaro coupes start at $24,245 for the base 1LS and move all the way up to $37,035 for the SS2 trim that I tested. In between are the 2LS ($25,445); 1LT ($26,660); 2LT ($29,585) and 1SS ($33,535). To assess the difference from the base 1LS to the 2SS, briefly, the 1LS has a 3.6-liter engine and the 2SS is powered by the 6.2-liter; the 1LS has 18inch heritage steel wheels vs. 20-inch painted aluminum; a 6-speaker sound system vs. a 9-speaker Bos-

ton Accoustics premium sound system and the 2SS has Black leather seating, a heads up display, Chevrolet MyLink with 7-inch diagonal color touch screen and optional navigation. Premium Rally Yellow paint added $395 and the SS1LE performance package added $3500 for a black hood, 20-inch x 10-inch front and 20-inch x 11-inch rear aluminum wheels with a 10-spoke design from the ZL1 and a low-gloss Black finish, 285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle Supercar Generation 2 performance summer tires, front and rear Performance Ride and Handling suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars for excellent body control and vehicle responsiveness and TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission with a 3.91 final-drive axle ratio. A power sunroof added $900, a high-wing spoiler was $615,

the Audio System with two 10-inch subwoofers and a matched 200-watt amplifier added $1965, Camaro Chevrolet MyLink with navigation added $795, remote start was $120, a fuel door was $155, carpeted floor mats were $155 and cargo net added $60. With destination charges of $900, my 2013 Camaro 2SS as tested was $41,295. You can see Camaros, and more than 2000 GM cars from the nostalgic to the futuristic at the Carlisle GM Nationals this weekend at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. Ford Flex styling is standout feature by ANN M. JOB associated press

The bold, boxy exterior of the Ford Flex is such a forceful statement, it can distract from the other notable features of this generously sized, six- to seven-passenger crossover vehicle. But Flex stylists aren’t retreating. For 2013, they updated the Flex front end with new fascia, grille and headlights for a more impactful appearance. Even the blue Ford logo has been removed from the grille now, leaving the word “Flex” spelled out in large letters across the front edge of the hood. If this is not enough of a distinctive look, Flex buyers can opt for a roof color that’s different from the body of the vehicle. As an example, the test 2013 Flex came with a Silver, two-tone roof atop a body painted Deep Impact Blue. Try finding this combination on a factory-built Honda Pilot or Dodge . The Flex also is one of the few large people haulers that offers a turbocharged, gasoline V-6. Ford’s EcoBoost V-6 generates 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm in the hefty, 4,800-pound Flex. This compares with the 250horsepower, non-turbo V6 with 253 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm that’s the only engine available in the Pilot. Consumer Reports lists the Flex as a recommended buy with average reliability overall, but prices — particularly for a Flex with EcoBoost engine — can be eye opening. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $31,795 for a base 2013 Flex SE with front-wheel drive. second row that’s a bench. The lowest starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2013 Flex with all-wheel drive is $36,145 and this also includes the non-turbo V-6. The lowest starting MSRP and destination charge for a 2013 Flex with the turbo V-6 is $45,195. This luxury-segment price stems from the fact the turbo is only available on the top-of-the-line Flex Limited which comes with standard luxury features such as perforated leather seats, 19-inch wheels, blind-spot monitor, navigation system and Sony audio with 12 speakers. Also, the turbo engine is only in the 2013 Flex Limited with all-wheel drive. In comparison, the starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a base, 2013 Pilot with front-wheel drive is $30,350, and a 2013 Dodge Durango which has three rows of seats and a 290-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-6, has a starting retail price of $30,490 with rear-wheel drive. The Flex can be difficult to describe. Some people call it a crossover SUV because it sits lower to the pavement than a traditional SUV and has more car-like ride and handling. But others see the Flex exterior shape as a wagon, albeit one that stretches 17 feet in overall length and stands 5.7 feet tall. These dimensions make the Flex longer than the Pilot and but shorter in height. But then, the Flex does not have as low a floor as a minivan does, and it requires a bit more work than a minivan to get inside to the third row. Whether it’s the odd looks, the difficulty in describing what the Flex is or the pricing, the Flex is the lowestselling Ford-branded SUV/ crossover/wagon. Sales last calendar year totaled 28,224, which is only a quarter of the

DETROIT — Car buyers increasingly want hightech features like voice recognition and navigation. But they’re not very forgiving of the car company when those systems fail. The top complaints in J.D. Power’s closely-watched survey of new vehicle owners, released Wednesday, involved technologies that drivers are clamoring for. Voice recognition systems either didn’t recognize commands or didn’t work at all. Bluetooth systems had trouble connecting with drivers’ phones. The result: Just when automakers had reached their highest-ever levels of quality — as they did in J.D. Power’s 2012 survey — technology glitches are dragging their scores down. “I’ve had companies tell me they would rather develop a new car from the ground up than a new entertainment system,” said Tom Mutchler, program manager of vehicle interface at Consumer Reports. This year’s survey questioned 83,442 owners and lessees of 2013 model year vehicles in their first 90 days of ownership. They were contacted at random through state registration data. Porsche, GMC, Lexus, Infiniti and Chevrolet topped the rankings, with owners reporting fewer than 100 problems per 100 vehicles. The worst-performing brands were Scion, Fiat, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Mini. Their owners reported 135 problems or more. The industry average was 113 problems per vehicle. Quality has gotten so good, industry-wide, that

the difference between the highest-ranking and lowest-ranking brands in J.D. Power’s survey amounts to just two problems per vehicle. Brands that bore the brunt of owner dissatisfaction often had the newest gadgetry. Cadillac’s new ATS sedan is equipped with the CUE touch screen infotainment system, which has been panned by critics who say it doesn’t always respond to the touch. Cadillac fell 10 places in the rankings. Nissan, which dropped 17 spots, was hurt by problems with features in its new Altima. Car owners have complained in online forums that the Altima’s voice recognition system doesn’t always understand them, and the car’s Bluetooth system has trouble connecting to their phones. J.D. Power, which has been conducting the survey since 1987, said the top complaints used to concern mechanical defects, such as engine noise, that could be readily fixed at a dealership. Now, owners complain about design or technology flaws that aren’t easy for a dealer to remedy. For example, wind noise — the third most common complaint this year — is related to the vehicle’s design, not its mechanical parts. “Automakers are investing billions of dollars into designing and building vehicles and adding technologies that consumers desire and demand. But the risk is that the vehicle design, or the technology within the vehicle, in some cases may not meet customer needs,” said David Sargent, vice president of J.D. Power’s global automotive business.

Government delays requiring rearview cameras in cars by JOAN LOWY associated press

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is again delaying regulations on whether new cars and trucks must come equipped with rearview cameras to protect against drivers backing over people in blind spots behind their vehicles, a victory for automakers who say requiring the cameras is too costly. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Thursday in letters to three members of Congress that more research is needed. He set a new deadline of January 2015 for the regulations. An average of 228 people are killed and 17,000 injured each year because of backover accidents. Many of the accidents occur in driveways and parking lots. Nearly half the deaths involve children under age 10. The elderly also frequently are victims. The emotional toll of the accidents is especially high since many of the drivers are parents or family members of those killed and injured. Congress passed a law in 2008 requiring the government to issue final regulations aiming at protecting against back-over accidents

by Feb. 28, 2011, and that the changes be in place for model year 2014 vehicles. But the regulations have been delayed repeatedly. The law didn’t require that cars and trucks come equipped with cameras in the rear of the vehicle that display images on a dashboard screen provided another solution could be found. But after studying the issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said cameras were the best solution and recommended more than two years ago that they be required on all new cars and trucks. The safety administration has estimated that making rear cameras standard on every car would add $58 to $88 to the price of vehicles already equipped with dashboard screens and $159 to $203 for those without them. The auto industry has opposed requiring cameras on all vehicles, saying it would cost automakers $2.7 billion annually. Many vehicles already come with the cameras as standard or optional equipment. “I am deeply disappointed by the administration’s foot-dragging over a rule that could help save the lives

of hundreds of young children and prevent thousands of heartbreaking injuries,” said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, DW.Va., chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “The fact is simple — we know installing rear cameras in cars will prevent injury and death,” he said. “The administration needs to move forward with this common-sense safety measure because children’s lives are in jeopardy.” Automakers say it should be up to consumers whether they want to pay for rearview cameras or one of the many other new safety systems being offered as optional equipment in many new cars. They’ve also urged limiting any requirement to new trucks, rather than both cars and trucks. Many new trucks already come with the cameras as standard equipment. “Automakers are providing cameras in cars today for greater vision and for new driver assists, and consumers should decide how best to spend their safety dollars. This is a decision for consumers,” said Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Au-

tomobile Manufacturers. Forty-four percent of 2012 models came with rear cameras standard, and 27 percent had them as options, according to the automotive research firm Edmunds. Nine in 10 new cars had console screens available, according to market research firm iSuppli, which would put the price of adding a camera on the low end of the NHTSA’s estimates. LaHood said in his letter to Rockefeller, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, DMich., and Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., that the regulations are “important to the department due to its focus on enhancing the safety of our children.” “Thus, it is especially important in this case for the department to ensure that all aspects of the rule are supported by robust analysis and that any additional societal impacts are examined,” he wrote. In the meantime, absent regulations, the safety administration said it planned to update its list of recommended safety features to encourage consumers to purchase cars with the cameras.

This base model comes with naturally aspirated, 287-horsepower V-6 and cloth seats with middle

JOPLIN, Mo. — When Patrick Goodknight was in the first grade at Irving Elementary School in Joplin, his teacher asked the pupils to draw a picture of what they wanted to be when they grew up. “I drew a cowboy and an Indian,” Goodknight said. He ran his own saddle business for about 10 years, but these days he is an Edward Jones financial adviser on South Main Street in Joplin, having followed in his father’s footsteps. RICHMOND, Va. — Car dealership chain CarMax Inc. said Friday that higher sales of used cars drove its first-quarter profit up more than 21 percent. Revenue grew 19 percent, but its expenses grew 14 percent. The earnings and revenue results beat Wall Street expectations, sending its shares up initially before giving ground in the afternoon. The Richmond, Va.-based company, which runs more than 120 stores in 61 markets that mainly sell used cars and trucks, reported earnings of $146.7 million, or 64 cents per share, for the three-month period ended May 31, up from $120.7 million, or 52 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue grew 19 percent to $3.31 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 58 cents per share on revenue of $3.17 billion. Its shares fell $1.26, or 2.8 percent, to $43.31 in afternoon trading Friday after rising as high as $48.19 earlier. That was near its 52week high of $48.86. Sales at stores open at least one year rose 17 percent. The figure is a key metric because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations. Used vehicle unit sales rose 22 percent as the company’s average selling price rose more than a percent to $19,540. Wholesale vehicle unit sales increased 6 percent during the quarter. New vehicle unit sales, which make up a smaller part of CarMax’s business, fell 7.5 percent. Other revenue, which includes fees it receives from third-party lenders its customers use, increased more than 4 percent. Associated Press

H&H COLLISION CENTER 8TH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING ALL PROCEEDS THIS YEAR WILL BE GOING TO SGT. ZACHARY STINSON & FAMILY OF CHAMBERSBURG

Marine Sergeant Zachary Stinson was on his first deployment when he lost both of his legs above the knee and suffered severe damage to his hands in an IED blast in Marjah, Afghanistan on November 9th, 2010. While on a foot patrol with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Sgt. Stinson stepped on an IED resulting in the traumatic amputations of his right leg below the knee and his left leg above the knee. Lifesaving measures by the corpsman readied him for MEDEVAC while shots were fired and a gun battle ensued. Sgt. Stinson remembers asking the corpsman to tell his wife, Tesa, (pregnant with their first child) that he loved her. Medically evacuated by helicopter, Sgt. Stinson was first treated at Camp

Bastion and next, The Craig Joint Theater Hospital in Bagram while in Afghanistan before being transported to Landstuhl, Germany. Arriving at Bethesda Naval Medical Center six days after the blast, Zach remained there for three months. Transferred to Richmond, VA for 30 days, Sgt. Stinson was next sent to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC where he spent more than a year before finally transferring to the newly renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, where he remains at this time. Zach has endured more than 25 surgeries, including the eventual amputation on his right leg above the knee and is presently undergoing therapies as an out-patient.

Wagon train buffs relive the past on Mo., Kan. trails

But several times a year, his dream does come true — sort of.
