2014 Scion FR-S: Cool compact sports car for those on a budget
Scion launched in 2002 as a trendy Toyota line to attract younger and more hip entry buyers with low pricing and the ability to customize. But many found the architecture boxy and the performance a bit lacking in a compromise to fuel economy. The Scion FR-S continues the affordability legacy and adds a “coolness factor,” styling, tunerability, precise handling and some zip (though not a ton of zip) to the Scion line-up. It also brings accolades by the carload and FR-S has been named one of Kelley Blue Book’s www.kbb.com “10 Coolest New Cars Under $25,000 of 2014;” as well as being chosen an Automobile Magazine All-Star, and selected as U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Sports Car for the Money.”
Front-engine, rear-wheel drive sportscar
FR-S debuted last year and little is new for 2014 with the exceptions of some interior mods, knee pads on both the transmission tunnel and the door panels around the speaker grilles, and a new standard 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system. The Scion FR-S gets its initialese name from its platform and function: Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport. And sporty it is, from its coupe body style, low roofline, long front and quick-sloping rear to its power creases. Even the color choice is hot, going from to Raven (glossy black) to Asphalt (a muted black or charcoal), to (Ultramarine (blue), Firestorm (red) and Hot Lava (orange) as was my cool-hot test ride. FR-S measures 166.7 inches long, 69.9 inches wide and a stable and aerodynamic 50.8 inches high on a 101.2-inch wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 4.9 inches. The exterior is enhanced with power folding side mirrors, dual exhaust, projector beam headlamps with auto-off, daytime running lights and 17-inch alloy wheels.

torque, and mated to either a six-speed manual (that I would have preferred for more driver’s feel) or a 6speed automatic with paddle shifters and dynamic rev-management, the rearwheel drive FR-S gets an estimated 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway on Premium Unleaded gasoline. A week of sprinting around town and pushing it on the highway yielded an average of 27.1 mpg. The 200 horses are plenty to get the light 2,806pounds curbweight FR-S around the city, cruising in the country or passing on the highway, but it isn’t what I would call “sportscar quick.” I wasn’t exactly smoking tires and rocketing along on-ramps, but I did manage a commendable 6.9-second sprint from zero to 60mph and a quartermile run of 15.3. Handling, however, is autocross-worthy. FR-S hugs corners and takes S-curves with passion and very little body lean. The steering communicates well and the tires grip pavement with aplomb. The MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear with stabilizer bars front and rear smooth out uneven surfaces and the experience is a bit stiff, but confident for driver and passengers. There is, however, a considerable amount of road noise that permeates the cabin, regardless of surface, but especially noticeable at high speed on the interstates.
Intuitive cabin filled with amenities The cabin is intuitive but not lush, modern but simple, and you get a feeling of fun behind the wheel or in the seats after you maneuver your way inside – that 50.8inch roof causes passengers and driver to grab, twist and propel into the vehicle. You have plenty of tech and entertainment inside, but also lots of plastic and a sports car amount of room that can be tighter than cozy for

The cabin provides 37.1 inches of front head room and only 35 inches for second seat passengers. Leg room is a roomy 41.9 inches in row one but a cramped 29.9 inches in row two, while shoulder room goes 54.5 and 51.7. The cabin is packed with convenience items including automatic climate control, push button start, one-touch power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, rear window defogger, digital clock, multi-information display, analog tach, leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, engine immobilizer, aluminum scuff plates, sport pedals and fold-flat rear seats. Basic audio includes 8 speakers, Bluetooth, a Pioneer system and HD radio.
Perfect scores in safety Regarding safety, Scion scores well with the FR-S— as it was scored a perfect five of five starts in government crash tests. Safety systems are strong with ABS brakes, traction control, vehicle stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, Smart Stop Technology, driver and front passenger advanced airbag
system, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, LATCH system for children, tire pressure monitoring system and first aid kit. The 2014 Scion FR-S starts at $24,455. The automatic version starts at $25,800. Fog lights added $490; paint protection film for the hood and front fender was
Mazda’s biggest SUV, CX-9, is a nimble handler at the wheel By Ann M. Job The Associated Press
Mazda, the car company that gave the world the nimble, two-seat Miata roadster, makes a commendable seven-seat crossover sport utility vehicle, too. And like the Miata, the 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a nimble handler that drives as if it’s smaller than it is. The nearly 17-foot-long CX-9 also is attractively styled with a raked windshield and well-proportioned shape and comes with strong V-6 power and comfortable interior room. The five-door CX-9 is rated by Consumer Reports magazine as above average in reliability as well. Additionally, pricing is competitive with better known family SUVs. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a 2014 CX-9 with 270horsepower V-6, six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive is $30,815. The lowest starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2014 CX-9 with all-wheel drive is $32,405. Among the standard features on every CX-9 are
three-zone climate control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel with cruise control and audio buttons on the wheel, power windows, door locks and outside mirrors, three 12-volt power outlets and 5.8-inch color display touchscreen. The CX-9 prices compare with the starting retail price of $30,775 for a front-wheel drive, 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe that has a 290-horsepower V-6, six-speed automatic and three rows of seats. Mea n t i m e , t h e b a s e , 2014 Toyota Highlander with front-wheel drive, a 185-horsepower four cylinder and six-speed automatic starts at $30,075. A 2014 Highlander with uplevel, 270-horsepower V-6 has a starting retail price of $31,380, or $565 more than the starting price of the V6-powered CX-9. Japan-based Mazda doesn’t have the advertising budget that bigger car companies do, so many shoppers aren’t aware of the CX-9. CX-9 sales in the United States through the first five months of this calendar year total just 7,812 compared with 60,583 Highlanders and 43,075 Santa Fe vehicles.
But the CX-9 is worth a look, especially for families that would prefer something a bit different than what the neighbors have. The test CX-9 — an allwheel drive model in top, Grand Touring trim — was a stalwart people carrier. Both front and second-row seats moved forward and back on tracks easily, so tall and short passengers always found a way to apportion legroom to make everyone comfortable. Plus, the large and right-height lever on each side of the second-row seats that quickly unlocked them and moved them out of the way for quick entry to the third row was simpler to use than those in some other SUVs. Even the two seats in the third row of the test CX-9 could accommodate adults if the second-row seats were moved up a ways on their tracks, though third-row seats sat close to the floor. Indeed, Mazda reports the CX-9 has more second- and third-row legroom than the Highlander, Honda Pilot and even the luxury Acura MDX. Specifically, Mazda measures 40.9 inches of frontseat legroom, another 39.8 inches for second-row pas-
sengers and 32.4 inches for the third row. These numbers compare with the Pilot’s 38.5 inches in the second row and 32.1 inches in the third row and the Highlander’s 38.4 inches in the second row and 27.7 inches in the third row. But the CX-9’s 5.7-foot height makes for less headroom than is found in some competitors. As an example, the taller Honda Pilot provides up to 40 inches of front-seat headroom compared to the CX-9’s 38.4 inches, and the Pilot offers 38.2 inches of third-row headroom vs. the CX-9’s 35.4 inches. But driving the CX-9 is a sportier experience. The test CX-9 rode on 20-inch tires and hewed close to the pavement, even though it sat up a good ways. Via the front MacPherson strut suspension and rear multilink configuration, the driver of the test vehicle felt a constant connection to the road, much as one would in a sporty sedan. This affected the ride by transmitting road bumps to passengers as mostly mild vibrations. But some passengers also noticed the noises that the tires conveyed as they traveled over the bumps.
$395; paint protection film for the front bumper was $600; a cosmetically cool rear bumper appliqué was $69; mudguards were $109; rear lip spoiler added $399; carpet trunk mat was $95; all-weather floor mats were $89; interior center armrest was $249; BeSpoke Premium audio with GPS navigation was $1,198; and adding $755 for delivery, process-
ing and handling brought the sticker-as-tested to $30,248. Visit www.CarlisleEvents. com for more on the automotive hobby. Analysts predict slower June sales at General Motors The Associated Press DETROIT — A number of analysts are predicting that General Motors’ June U.S. sales will underperform the overall auto industry, putting the company in danger of losing market share at a critical time. GM has issued 44 recalls covering 20 million cars and trucks this year as it undergoes a top-to-bottom safety review in the wake of a mishandled recall of small cars. So far, GM has announced or taken charges totaling $2 billion to cover recall costs. While the spate of safety problems may be partly at fault, analysts say sales also could be hurt by a pullback on discounts and a drop in sales to rental car companies. Whatever the reason, a subpar month could drop GM’s market share from the 17.6 percent it held at the end of May. Chrysler, which has already gained nearly a point of market share this year according to AutoData, could be the beneficiary. Automakers are scheduled to release sales results on Tuesday. GM won’t be the only company to trail
the industry. Sales at Ford are expected to drop from a year ago as the company prepares to roll out significant new vehicles later in the year, led by the new F150 pickup. The Associated Press surveyed four auto industry research firms, and their forecasts for GM’s June sales range from a decline of 8.5 percent (Edmunds. com) to an increase of 2 percent (LMC Automotive) based on sales for the first three weeks. Cars.com predicts total U.S. sales will drop 2.1 percent. One factor in the decline: last year had one more Saturday, typically a strong day for dealerships. But the market will remain on track to top 16 million in annual sales for the first time since 2007, says senior analyst Jesse Toprak. Toprak expects GM sales to fall 6.1 percent. He partly blames buyer suspicion about safety issues and predicts that GM’s market share will drop nearly one percentage point from June of last year. Truecar expects GM sales to fall 3 percent while the industry sees a 1 percent gain.

Automakers to recall air bags in parts of U.S. The Associated Press
DETROIT — Faulty air bags — which have already led to the recall of millions of cars worldwide — are blamed for a new round of recalls in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government’s auto safety agency, said Monday that BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota will recall cars sold in places where hot, humid weather can potentially affect the air bags. The older-model cars have air bag inflators that can rupture. If that happens, the air bags might not work properly in a crash, and shards from the broken system could fly out and cause injury. The automakers all have air bag systems made by Takata Corp., a Tokyobased supplier of seat belts, air bags, steering wheels and other auto parts. NHTSA opened an investigation this month after
getting six reports of air bags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico. Three people were injured in those cases. It had estimated 1.1 million vehicles automakers in the U.S. could be affected, but the total is likely to climb. Honda, for example, said it will include 10 states and territories in its recall, including Texas, Georgia and South Carolina. Honda says Takata recommended recalling cars in four places: Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The government says it wanted to act quickly in warm states while it continues to investigate the issue. “Based on the limited data available at this time, NHTSA supports efforts by automakers to address the immediate risk in areas that have consistently hot, humid conditions over extended periods of time,” the agency said in a statement. Honda says too much pressure may be building up in the system, causing the air bags to deploy with too
much force. In one complaint last August, a Honda driver’s lawyer told NHTSA that the car was in a crash, and both driver and passenger air bags inflated. The driver’s air bag inflator ruptured “and propelled a one-inch piece of shrapnel into the driver’s right eye.” The driver lost sight and suffered cuts requiring 100 stitches to close, the complaint said. Takata’s air bags have been the subject of multiple recalls in recent months. In April 2013, Toyota, Honda and Nissan recalled nearly 3.4 million oldermodel vehicles worldwide due to a problem with the propellant in the air bags that could lead to fires. But Takata recently realized that recall didn’t include all of the potentially faulty air bags. Earlier this month, Toyota recalled 2.27 million more cars globally. And on Monday in Japan, Honda, Mazda and Nissan together recalled nearly 3 million more.
Ford looks beyond steel but says it’s still a big customer By Joseph S. Pete The Times (Munster, Indiana) Ford has come up with a new Lightweight Concept car that makes greater use of aluminum and other alternative metals, but company officials say the automaker isn’t giving up on steel. “We’re still a huge steel user and will be for a long time,” said Joe Hinrichs, executive vice president and president of the Americas at Ford. Ford is building more on its design for the aluminumbodied F-150, which is 700 pounds lighter to improve mileage and meet tough new federal fuel-efficiency standards. The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker is experimenting with different materials — including recycled soda bottles and even tomato fiber — to get its fleet to the average of 54.5 miles per gallon that is mandated by 2025. The automaker’s new Lightweight Concept cuts the weight of a 2013 Fusion by 25 percent, effectively making a full-size sedan weigh as much as a compact Ford Fiesta. The demonstration vehicle, which Ford says
potentially could be produced at high volume, uses more aluminum, chemically toughened glass, magnesium, carbon fiber and ultra-high strength steel. “There’s lots of new technologies out there in boron and high-strength steel, but also in aluminum to be able to take weight out,” Hinrichs said.“We’re showcasing what we can do with lightweighting. What that means for all of our plants is Ford continues to intend to be a leader in fuel efficiency with all our new models, and we have a number of enabling technologies to make that happen, including taking weight out of our new vehicles. We want to take weight out of our new platforms whenever we do new vehicles.” New Ford models often have smaller engines, replacing V8s with lighter and lower-horsepower EcoBoost engines. They also often include parts made with more lightweight metals than the steel that is forged in Northwest Indiana mills. “The new Mustang has an aluminum fender,” Hinrichs said. “It always had an aluminum hood, but now it has an aluminum fender.” Ford has been experiment-
ing with new metals, alloys and composites for more than 25 years. The adoption of more alternate metals threatens steel, which historically accounts for about 60 percent of the weight of the average vehicle. About 20 percent of the steel made in the United States is for the automotive sector, and the local mills in Northwest Indiana count automakers as some of their largest customers. “We’re material-agnostics,” spokesman Chris Preuss said. Aluminum has been making inroads on steel’s market share. A recent study commissioned by the Aluminum Association found the use of aluminum sheet for vehicle bodies could increase from 200 million pounds last year to as much as 4 billion pounds by 2025. The lighter metal has not been widely adopted outside of luxury brands thus far because it is three times more expensive than steel. Analysts believe, on the mass market, aluminum sheet is most likely to be used more in the bodies of bigger vehicles like pickup trucks, where it can shave the most weight.
A boxful of Matchbox memories By David Blow The Post-Star (Glen Falls, New York) A 1970s-era gold Mercedes 300 sedan came screaming across the concrete with the beat-up, white police car sporting a smashed blue light right on its tail. Drivers of both cars skillfully stayed in between the deep, jungle-like grass to the left and the huge lake to the right that was filled with almost-too-blue water. Seconds later, however, the sedan and police car were old news. Now, a weathered tractortrailer truck hauling a tiny sports car is inching its cargo across that same concrete, followed by a blue Land Rover with an orange luggage rack and an old school garbage truck that looks like it has hauled area trash since Carter was in office. Closer inspection of the scene reveals dozens of other vehicles in the background, almost all from the early 1970s and most with chipping paint and dings everywhere. There’s a Greyhound bus, a butterscotch-colored VW Beetle, a white Mercedes 230SL convertible, a red and green refrigerator truck missing the back door and a BP gas tanker truck. There’s even a MASH helicopter.
Bizarre scene, right? But just an hour before, the concrete on which they now sit was bare and all of the vehicles were tucked away in the same orange mop bucket they’ve been in for five decades, waiting for eager little hands. “Can I play with the cars?” 2-year-old Will Jenkins immediately asked his parents at his home when told he was heading to the Blows’ house for a poolside barbecue. (That story was relayed by his folks.) Minutes after his arrival, the cars came cascading from the mop bucket onto the pool deck, and the well sun-screened toddler sporting a baseball cap, T-shirt and shorts began bringing them back to life. “Brrrrrrrrrm,” he said, swe rv i n g a n ove rs i ze d M a tc h b o x a m b u l a n c e around the other cars. Inevitably, they’ll end up lined up in a row, with him sitting with outstretched legs and choosing which ones he wants to pull out for a drive. Others at our gatherings swim and scream and eat and drink within feet of him, but Will seems totally content on this day with the cars and trucks — just like I was. The bucket of cars has resided at my home in
Queensbury for probably five or six years now after being housed since the ’70s in the Chittenden, Vt., home I grew up in. The mop bucket, their home, looks worse than most of the cars. The plastic lip is almost gone from the top and it’s split in several places, but it still sports a 1977 Vermont State Fair bumper sticker, the remnants of a sticker from Storytown (yup, that’s dating me), a ladybug sticker that says “don’t bug me” and a “milk drinkers make better lovers” sticker. Pretty diverse youngster I was, huh? In Magic Marker and written sideways in little kid handwriting is “David Blow.” As a kid, I was Will, and dumping the bucket of these cars and trucks was a daily imaginative release for a kid who lived in the country, where nearby friends were scarce. My favorite was the cop car, perhaps because my dad was a Rutland County sheriff’s deputy. Not long ago, I considered trying to sell the cars. Hell, they’re 40-plus years old and gotta be worth something, I figured. I also looked into selling my John Deere pedal tractor with trailer. Those can fetch a decent sum, I discovered.

My favorite was the cop car, perhaps because my dad was a Rutland County sheriff’s deputy. Not long ago, I considered trying to sell the cars. Hell, they’re 40-plus years old and gotta be worth something, I figured. I also looked into selling my John Deere pedal tractor with trailer. Those can fetch a decent sum, I discovered.

My favorite was the cop car, perhaps because my dad was a Rutland County sheriff’s deputy. Not long ago, I considered trying to sell the cars. Hell, they’re 40-plus years old and gotta be worth something, I figured. I also looked into selling my John Deere pedal tractor with trailer. Those can fetch a decent sum, I discovered.
