CX-9 performs with a ‘Soul of Motion’ After six years and a few first-gen tweaks, Mazda’s crossover, the CX-9 still shares elements with its former Ford brethren, but the vehicle remains Mazda’s flagship sports-ute and continues as the largest vehicle in the lineup. Manufactured in Hiroshima Japan, the three-row, seven-passenger 2013 CX9 has been refreshed with Mazda’s KODO “Soul of Motion” design enhancements as well as added technology features from the inside out. In reality, if you liked last year’s CX-9, you’ll like this year’s model, as only some exterior mods and interior additions were made.

Artistic design Mazda incorporates a five-point front grille with a chrome outline that points deftly and defined into eagle-eyed headlamps. Its steeply raked windshield, long, tapered nose and front-faced angles create a forward-looking demeanor with a revisited rear bumper. The fog lights also have been redesigned to sync with the KODO-esque attributes of the front fascia as have the dual rear exhaust pipes. Inside a well-appointed cabin and dashboard have been updated and some newly standard features have been added. Among the standard items you get with the 2013 CX-9 are 6-speed sport automatic transmission with sportshift mode, halogen headlights, power side mirrors, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, three-zone automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, clothtrimmed seats, AM/FM/ CD/MP3-compatible stereo with 6 speakers, 5.8-inch color touchscreen display, USB audio input port, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming capability, HD radio, Pandora internet radio connectivity, SMS text message audio delivery and reply and E911 automatic emergency notification. At 200.6 inches long, CX-9 is large enough to accommodate 76.2 inches in width, 68 inches in height a 42.8-inch

front overhang and 44.6inch rear overhang … all on a 113.2-inch wheelbase.

Explosive acceleration But it plays smaller than that, due to a powerful MZR 3.7-liter V-6 engine and solid ride dynamics. Mazda CX-9 zoom-zooms by way of a 273-hp plant with a long torque curve that delivers ample power from a peak 270 lbs.-ft. of torque, at 6,250 rpm for explosive acceleration and passing performance. Excellent passing and uphill-grade power translates better at speed than off a dead stop, as zero-to-60 mph dashes came in at a good-for-theniche, but not exceptional 7.6 seconds, en route to an admirable 15.8-second quarter-mile. But CX-9 performs better on the highway than on the track. During aggressive acceleration, or when one front wheel is on the verge of slipping, a controlled percentage of the available torque is directed to the rear axle. A power takeoff device integrated with the vehicle’s transaxle spins a drive shaft attached to an active coupling built into the rear differential. Commanded by a control module, the servo-controlledmulti-plate coupling can route from zero and up to 50 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels. Responsive steering allows CX-9 to corner better than most larger utes, and road leveling is comfortable from a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multilink rear. During quick maneuvers there is substantial top wobble, but traction is sure and dependable making even auto-crossing a fun and not stressful endeavor. One disappointment with the 4,662-lb. crossover is its fuel consumption. Considering its bulk and power, the estimated 16 mpg city and

During mixed-use testing, the yield was an average of 19.7mpg.

Well-appointed cabin Inside, CX-9 is packed with the accouterments mentioned above, and is accommodating with 39.6 inches of front headroom, 39 inches in row two and 35.4 inches in row three. Legroom goes 40.9 in front with 39.8 and 32.4 in rows two and three and shoulder room comes in at 59.4, 58.7 and 56.9. Safety items include six airbags with rollover protection, an Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution with Brake Assist, dynamic stability control and traction control system a tire pressure monitoring system, “Triple H” body construction, front and rear side crumple zones, three-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. The 2013 Mazda CX9 starts at $29,785 for a front-wheel drive in the Sport trim. I tested this model in All-Wheel-Drive,

and that bumped it up to $31,375. Touring trim starts at $32,230 and adds autooff headlights, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, leather-trimmed seats, 8way power driver’s seat with power adjustable lumbar support, 4-way power front passenger seat, Blind Spot Monitoring System, rearview backup camera and Rear backup sensors. AWD starts at $33,820. The Grand Touring trim is top of the chain at $34,785 ($36,375 for AWD) and adds bi-xenon hid headlights with auto on/

off, LED daytime running lights, halogen fog lights, power open/close rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power side mirrors with side marker turn-signal lights, mirror memory function and “tiltin-reverse” option, 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and other niceties. My CX-9 Sport in Meteor Mica Gray, mated to a black cloth interior, added power driver’s seat with heated front seats and mirrors for $690; remote engine start was $350; auto-dimming

mirror with compass and Homelink was $295; allweather floor mats added $125; a cargo net added $50 and destination fees added $795. That put the price-astested at $33,680. Lexus ES sedan offered as a hybrid, too By Ann M. Job Associated Press The best-selling Lexus car, the ES entry-luxury sedan, now comes as a gasolineelectric hybrid, and what a fine hybrid it is. The 2013 ES 300h has an impressive government fuel economy rating of 40 miles per gallon in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway; it earned an overall five-outof-five-stars safety rating in federal government crash tests; it’s a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, with predicted reliability of above average. And it comes with the improvements made for 2013 in the non-hybrid, sixthgeneration ES. So, the 300h rides on a longer, frontwheel drive platform than the previous ES had, and it has upscale styling that makes it look more like the pricier Lexus LS 460 flagship. The ES 300h even has the striking “spindle” grille that appears on sportier Lexus cars. The 2013 ES 300h also has 41.9 inches in the front-seat legroom and a whopping 40 inches of legroom in the back seat. Still, the ES 300h and its gasoline-only sibling, the 2013 ES 350, remain midsize sedans that are comfortable and refined to drive and ride in. The 200-horsepower hybrid ES 300h has a luxury car starting retail price of $40,145. This is $2,880 more than the starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $37,265 for a base, 2013 ES 350 with 268-horsepower V-6 and no hybrid system. But since the ES 300h’s city fuel mileage rating is roughly double the 21 mpg

of the 2013 ES 350’s, and the hybrid is estimated to get 8 more miles per gallon on the highway than the ES 350 does, the $2,880 difference in base price can be recouped after fewer than 45,000 miles, given today’s gasoline prices. Competitors include the 188-horsepower, 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, whose starting MSRP, including destination charge, is much lower: $36,820. The MKZ Hybrid has the top federal government fuel economy rating among luxury-branded, gasoline-electric hybrid sedans: 45/45 mpg; the ES 300h ranks second. The 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, which uses the same hybrid drive system as the ES 300h and has the same underlying platform, has a starting retail price of $36,350. The base ES 300h comes with standard eight-speaker sound system, 10-way, power-adjustable front seats, unique, small “puddle”-illuminating lights under the outside mirrors that light the ground as driver and front-passenger exit, 17-inch wheels, light-emitting diode (LED) turn signals, halogen headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, power moonroof and a high-grade, vinyl NuLuxe material on the seats. But the feeling inside the new ES is more upscale than in the previous model, in part because there’s luxury-imbuing stitching atop the dashboard and the dashboard is modernized with a layout that almost looks serene. This is not an easy accomplishment, given the number of buttons and knobs and displays in today’s cars. Passengers didn’t sense that this ES has only a 2.5-

liter, dual cam, four-cylinder engine operating with a fuel-thrifty Atkinson cycle. The car accelerated strong and steadily and power felt more like that from a V-6, though there were no V-6 engine sounds. Note that in the hybrid ES, exhaust pipes are hidden. In contrast, in the V-6 gaspowered ES 350, dual tailpipes are clearly visible for a sportier look. In the test ES 300h, the 156-horsepower four cylinder was peppy — with 156 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm — and meshed seamlessly with the two on-board electric motors/ generators and 1.6-kilowatt battery pack that helped save on gasoline. Everything was managed expertly by electronics, and during the test drive, there was no hesitation or shuddering of the car during the transitions from electric power to engine power. With electric power added in, total horsepower is 200. And yes, it is true that the ES 300h hybrid system is tuned so the electric power is used more in city driving than on highways. This accounts for the slightly higher city fuel economy number than the highway number. The ES 300h is quite quiet when it’s moving. Like other hybrids, the ES 300h shuts down its engine at stoplights to save gas and becomes magically quiet. The car automatically restarts when the accelerator is pressed. The ES 300h has a button to run the car on electric power only, but it’s limited to speeds under 25 miles per hour and very short distances. The ES 300h does not come with plug-in capability. All electric power is gen-

ALL-AMERICAN Brandpoint

Dogs and other pets can lead to distractions while driving.

Safety tips for driving with dogs Brandpoint I t’s o n ly n a t u ra l fo r man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes — and mind — off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido is with you, remember these tips: • Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat — if you’re in

an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. • Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. • Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite new way to travel. • Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep everyone in your car safe — and you may even qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger. For more safe driving tips and information about AARP Driver Safety, visit www.aarp.org/ drive.

Judge finalizing deal in acceleration cases Associated Press SANTA ANA, Calif. — A California judge said Friday that he’s finalizing a settlement worth more than $1 billion in cases where motorists say the value of their Toyota vehicles plunged after recalls over claims they unexpectedly accelerated. U.S. District Judge James Selna said he was approving the deal that was announced in December and will affect 22 million consumers. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Toyota since 2009, when the Japanese automaker started receiving numerous complaints that its cars accelerated on their own, causing crashes, injuries and even deaths. More than 14 million vehicles have been recalled since the claims surfaced. Toyota has denied the allegations, blaming driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems. Steve Berman, an attorney representing Toyota own-

ers, has said the settlement is the largest in U.S. history involving automobile defects. He added that Selna called the deal extraordinary three times during a hearing Friday in Orange County. An email message left for Toyota was not immediately returned. The company had previously said it will take a one-time, $1.1 billion pretax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. The cases were consolidated before Selna and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Toyota has settled a couple of wrongful death cases, and the first one to go to trial is scheduled to begin in a Los Angeles courtroom next week. As part of the economic loss settlement, Toyota will offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010.

Ian Webb, of Fort Wayne, Manny Angareti, of Long Island, N.Y., and Bob Hodson, of Orlando, Fla., gather around Angareti’s 1974 AMC Gremlin outside the National Auto and Truck Museum in Auburn, Ind., on Wednesday.

Fans of old American Motors cars enjoy being different ByDave Kurtz The (Auburn, Ind.) Star AUBURN, Ind. — Standing out from the crowd makes American Motors cars appealing to Ian Webb and his fellow enthusiasts. “You’re the only one of these at a show,” he said. “I think that’s what guys really get out of AMCs and when they like to collect them.” More than 200 car owners who enjoy being different are gathering in Auburn this weekend with the Hoosier AMC Club, a chapter of the American Motors Owners Association, The Star reported. Thursday evening, the AMC owners were showing their cars at a cruise-in on the courthouse square in Auburn. On Saturday, they will stage a car show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Auburn Auction Park with free admission. Webb, of Fort Wayne,

works for Auctions America, which owns the auction park. He serves on the board of directors of Hoosier AMC Club. He was expecting 200 to 250 cars for the AMC show, but Wednesday evening, he was beginning to think his estimate might be low. Some 50 owners already had arrived for a welcoming event at the National Auto and Truck Museum. Webb said owners are bringing cars from as far as Oregon. “I would imagine we’ll have almost every state represented,” he said. To prove the point, Manny Angareti drove up in his 1974 AMC Gremlin as Webb was talking, freshly arrived from Long Island, N.Y. Angareti explained how he bought his car for $750 in 2006 in Montana and drove it back to New York in frigid conditions. “I had one of these when

I was a kid in 1970,” he said. “The minute I got behind the wheel, I felt like I was 20 years old again.” Angareti was just getting started with going to great lengths for his passion. Next, he bought a 1976 AMC Pacer in Fairbanks, Alaska, and made a seven-day drive back to Long Island. When he bought his first Gremlin, “I liked it because it was different,” he said. Bob Hodson of Orlando, Fla., listened as Angareti talked. He owns five AMC models and said he fell in love with the 1964 American hardtop. “I have not been able to move past that car” in the half-century since then, he said. “When I go down the road in my AMC, I don’t see myself coming or going, and I can find it in the parking lot,” Hodson said. Webb’s connection to AMC cars goes back even

further than his teenage years. “I came home from the hospital in a ‘69 AMX, and I’ve been going to these shows since I was in a stroller,” he said. Webb’s family owned a business in Huntington selling auto restoration parts. We b b d rove h i s ra cy 1978 AMX to the museum Wednesday night. His first car was an identical twin to it, he said. But Webb is eager to show off his 1971 Gremlin this weekend. He just finished Tuesday with a 27-month restoration of the car. “I’m pretty excited to be able to debut it here in the ‘home’ show,” he said. Webb said encouraged the club to come to Auburn for this year’s gathering. “Auburn’s such a car town,” he said. “I think people are really going to get a kick out of coming to Auburn for this show.”

Teens get second chance by fixing cars By Meghann Evans Winston-Salem Journal WINSTON-SALEM,N.C.— On many weekday mornings Dave Moore can be found teaching lessons about life and cars to his latest group of students at his WinstonSalem auto body repair shop. The teens, ranging in age from 14 to 19 years old, spend three mornings a week at Southside Rides as part of the Reclaiming Futures Juvenile Drug Court Program overseen by CenterPoint Human Services and Insight Human Services. The program offers substance abuse services to youth entering the court system, which includes special summer activities to keep them focused. Southside is one of the sites offering summer training, and though the program is new, it is not unfamiliar territory for Moore. For several years now, Moore — the founder of Southside Rides Foundation — has opened his shop up to those in need of a second chance. Young men and women pass through his garage throughout the year as he works with the court system to get them community service hours and auto-body repair training or access to other career training opportunities. He even offers customized training at the shop through a Forsyth Technical Community College program. Six teens are participating in the summer program at Southside Rides. Moore said the program has been a success so far, but now he is encouraging the community to get involved. Moore is asking community members to bring their cars by the shop to let the

But Moore also sees it as a way to engage his students with the community. As they wash people’s cars, Moore hopes they can chat with folks and make positive connections. He is also encouraging police officers to stop by and meet the teens to “bridge the gap.” The teens can be found near the shop on Hope Street from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They begin their sessions with an hour of exercise at the nearby Better Body Training Facility. The owner is Henry Gray, who has a law enforcement career spanning 28 years. One of their trainers is Derrell Springs, a former gang member who has

turned his life around. Springs said, “I needed a chance. If I can change, they can change.” After spending time at the gym, the teens come back to the shop for a class about auto body work and detailing. “I think the world of Dave and his program,” said Kathi Perkins, system of care coordinator for CenterPoint and Reclaiming Futures treatment fellow. “I think the community really benefits from someone like him in the community and doing the type of work that he does.” Bryant Williams is a testament to Moore’s training. He was fresh from prison when he began participating in a Southside program in March 2011. With his criminal record, Williams had a hard time finding a job. “Now I’ve got a skill and a trade,” said Williams. Williams said he never en-

visioned himself attending college, but thanks to what he learned at Southside, he is now a student at Forsyth Tech working on his degree in collision repair and refinishing. He said of Southside: “It gives you a lot of doors to open up. It’s up to you. Are you gonna turn the knob or not?” Jermeka Fulton speaks with young women at the garage about her life story. She tells of how she got in trouble at age 19 and spent several years in prison. Now she has been home for eight months and has a job, a car and her son back. Fulton talks about how she could have given up but she didn’t, and she praises the encouragement Moore provides. The summer program will continue until Aug. 10, when Moore plans to have a car show fundraiser and a graduation ceremony for the students.
