2014 Jaguar F-Type Convertible: Iconic sports car continues legacy Jaguar began as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, and the Jaguar name has been synonymous with sleek and powerful sports cars since 1935 with the SS Jaguar 100. Jaguar’s racing and road reputation has been assured since its 1948 XK120 won hearts and races after WWII. A new model has arrived to build on the reputation and continue the legacy – the 2014 Jaguar F-Type in Coupe and Convertible forms. A two-seater based on a truncated XK Convertible model, the new F-Type returns to Jaguar’s sports car roots as a convertible two-seater focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. Jaguar promotes the F-Type as “a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable cars ever built.”

Recognizable sleekness Jaguar’s iconic catlike sleekness is easily recognizable from the long sloping nose to the prominent mesh grille and side vents. The bold, angular grille is flanked by twin “shark gill” openings, intended to give as much visual impact as possible and ensure that the F-Type has instant rear view mirror recognition on the road. The one-piece clamshell hood (or bonnet) stretches back from the leading edge of the grille, incorporating the signature Jaguar bonnet bulge and twin vents. The eye then goes to the winglike head-

lamps and smooth lines that bring you across the side to the slanted trunk (boot), muscular rear haunch and active lower rear spoiler. The rear spoiler will deploy at speed to reduce lift and keep the “Cat” prowling and hugging the asphalt. Full LED rear lamps create a new Jaguar sports car signature by reinterpreting classic cues from the past and, by wrapping around to the trailing edge of the rear wheelarch. They play off the F-Type’s powerful and sports car demeanor. F-Types structure utilizes aluminum monocoque construction and alloy technology to deliver increased structural integrity while reducing weight. The design also increases vehicle stability, enhances agility and lowers the center of gravity to provide the feeling of “oneness” with the road. F-Type dimensions are pure sports coupe, at 176 inches long, an aerodynamic 51 inches high and 75.7 inches wide on a 103.2inch wheelbase, weighing in with a curbweight of 3,521 pounds. Ground clearance is about 4.3 inches and when driving country roads at speed, it is advisable to athletically steer around potholes and irregularities.

Powerful cat Jaguar’s F-Type is more than just a good-looker … history demands performance and you get that with either a new 3.0-liter V-6 supercharged engine in 340 or 380 horsepower configurations or the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that stampedes out 495 horses. My test F-Type had the base 340 horsepower engine setup with 332 pounds per foot of torque and was mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. It was cat-quick, nimble and sports car-fun to drive. The more powerful engines can sprint the F-Type from zero to 60 mph in about 4 ticks for the V-8 and 4.8 for the up-powered V-6, but my test rocket still dashed in 5 seconds flat (hand-timed), and blazed a quarter-mile in 13.6 (also hand-timed), reaching a buck-sixty on the speedo. EPA estimated at 20/city and 28/highway, my week of gunning it and cruising around town, the interstates, and along lakesides, delivered an average of 22.2 mpg. Handling lives up to its feline rep, with crisp steering, non-hesitant acceleration, solid balance, strong braking and confident stability.

Bountiful cockpit The base cockpit is comfortable and filled with upscale amenities. Intuitively designed, everything seems to be at hand’s length. Taking inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by function. While interior headroom

Front leg room is 43 inches and shoulder room is 56.5. The cabin comes filled with such accouterments as climate control, anti-theft protection including interior monitoring, 10-speaker Meridian audio system with AM/FM radio, CD player (reads MP3 format), entertainment display screen located in front includes DVD, trip computer, floor console with covered storage, cruise control, outside air temperature indicator, driver and front passenger sports seats with power adjustments, headlight control with dusk sensor, internal HD navigation system with 3-D and

Safety features include intelligent driver front airbag, intelligent passenger front airbag with occupant switch off, front side airbag with head protection, two front seat head restraints, driver and passenger front seat belts with pre-tensioners and low tire pressure indicator. The 2014 Jaguar F-Type Coupe starts at $65,000 and the F-Type Convertible starts at $69,000. Offered in three trims, the F-Type Convertible is the base, as I tested with the Jaguar 3.0-Liter V-6 340 horsepower Supercharged

Engine; the F-Type S with starts at $81,000 with enhanced graphics, interior, dynamics, tech and 40 more horses; and the 5.0-liter V-8 supercharged F-Type V-8 S starts at $92,000 for more enhancements and an additional 115hp. Leather seats added $500, heated windshield with timer added $350, a wind deflector added $275 and destination charges of $925 put the sticker at $71,050. Ford Shelby GT500 is more powerful than ever Since I took over this column in 2005, I have been fortunate enough to drive hundreds of great vehicles, including the special one I tested for this week’s column. This column is a special one as it is the 500th All About Cars column I have written for Carlisle Events. During that time I have tested and reviewed muscle cars, family sedans, sports cars, soccer-mom vans, tough trucks, off-road performers, luxury cars, econoboxes, nostalgic icons, short-timers and those that have endured. I have tested Corvettes and Pony Cars, Bentleys and Smart Cars, Hummers and hybrids and even a Zamboni. Many of the cars I tested were seen at the various great shows at Carlisle Fairgrounds and many were tested on the fairgrounds’ autocross track. Two vehicle tests even made it to film on SpeedChannel’s successful series, “Cars at Carlisle.” I have been asked what was my favorite car? I have many favorites as there is generally something about every car that I like, but I have never driven the perfect car, nor have I ever given a perfect vehicle review … I keep waiting and searching and testing and reviewing … and that is part of the fun. I prefer vehicles that serve their niches well, whether it is a 500 horsepower muscle car, a luxury vehicle that pulls out all the stops, a work truck that pulls out tree stumps, a tuner that I can drift at an autocross, a family sedan that really caters to the family and can also please mom and dad on a night out, a fuel-efficient vehicle that is truly “green”,

entry-level vehicles that are great buys — I always like great buys — versatile vehicles, fast cars and safe cars, as well as specialty vehicles. And I love re-visits – bringing back icons of the past with today’s top tech and safety. I love vehicles I can run full out on the track; those that maneuver efficiently in town; ones that are gentle at the pump and the cars that will turn heads on the road. Along the way, I hope this column has given readers some history, some fun trivia, some useful information, pricing they can take to the dealers and a lively read. I listen seriously to comments from my readers and welcome your views, whether positive or negative, so please keep them coming.

2014 Ford Shelby GT500 I think it is fitting that my 500th column features a vehicle with “500” in its name, and a favorite of mine from past columns — this year’s version of a revered Pony, the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500. Heralded by Ford as “The Ultimate Mustang,” the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 raises the bar high on performance with the most powerful production V-8 engine in the world, delivering 662 horsepower. The original Ford GT500 was a Carroll Shelby design

Muscular outside, loaded inside Built in Flat Rock, Michigan, the Shelby GT500 is nostalgically muscular, enhanced by a Shelby rear decklid spoiler, unique Shelby front/rear fascia and splitter, Cobra and Shelby badges front, grille side and on the gas cap, and lots more. The Shelby GT500 measures 188.2 inches long, 73.9 inches wide and a sportscar-like 54.8 inches high, on a 107.1-inch wheelbase, with a curbweight of 3,850 pounds. The base Shelby GT500 is loaded with interior features including leather-trimmed bucket seats with racing stripes, manual air condi-

tioning, Skaker audio system, Surround Sound, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, SYNC with Applink, ambient lighting, 4.2-inch message center, heated front seats and tons more. With seating for four, the interior provides 38.5 inches of front headroom, and only 34.7 inches in row two. Legroom measures a comfortable 42.4 inches in row one and a cramped 29.8 inches in row two. Shoulder room goes 55.3 inches up front and 51.6 in the second seats.

Stampeding horses — 662 of them Under hood, this powerful Pony stampedes out 662 thundering horses with 631 pounds per footof torque with its 5.8-liter, supercharged four-valve DOHC V-8 with over-rev capability. A powerful performer, the 2014 version leaves the

’67 version in its wake. The original GT500 was touted at 6.1 seconds for a zero-to-60mph dash and a 14.3-second quarter-mile. My track tests with the 2014 model blew that out of the water with a 4.1-second sprint and a 12.3-second quarter. While the ride was good for driving the track — feeling most road nuances — passengers thought the experience was too stiff. On Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G rubber — 19-inchers in front and 20-inchers in the rear — the Shelby GT500 attacks hairpins with gusto and is one with the road at speed and while cruising around town. Fuelwise, the Shelby is EPA rated at 15/24. I averaged a gas-guzzling 15.5mpg and loved every thirsty moment. Safety items include dual front airbags and driver and passenger side-impact air-

bags, tire pressure monitoring system and an SOS Post-Crash Alert System that flashes signal lights and sounds the horn in the event of an accident. While a basic Mustang Coupe with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine starts at $22,510, five models run all the way to the 662-horsepower Shelby GT500 that starts at $55,110. The electronics package added $2,349 for navi, dualzone automatic climate control and HDRadio. Destination charges of $825 brought the final sticker to $58,275. 2014 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS combines muscle and sportiness The mid-’60s Pony icon from Chevrolet, the Camaro, was launched for the 1967 model year and thrived until the turn of the century. After a brief hiatus, Camaro was re-introduced in 2009 and it has enjoyed star status ever since. Upgraded last year, with a road-racing inspired 1LE performance package of special gearing, suspension tuning and tires, the 2014 model has been tweaked again to show off a new front fascia, headlamps and unique SS hood; unique RS grille; new rear fascia with fresh diffusers and exhaust tips; and modified taillights, deck lid and rear spoiler. Also added for 2014 are a special rear spoiler on the SS 1LE Performance Package, Recaro performance front seats for the SS coupe; color heads-up display; color driver information center display; daytime running lamps with low-beam headlamps; separate daytime running lamps with RS package; projector-style fog lamps; a Blue interior accent trim package and three new exterior colors — Red Hot, Bright Yellow and Red Rock Metallic. T h e fo u r- p a s s e n ge r, front-engine, rear-drive coupe is built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada with a unitized body frame and one- and two-sided galvanized steel. The new front and rear fascias — including new headlamp and taillight designs — provide a sleeker, faster appearance. muscle, sportiness and lavishness in a powerful package that measures 190.6 inches long, 75.5 inches wide and 54.2 inches high on a 112.3inch wheelbase. The manual SS weighs a confident 3908 lbs. (curbweight) while the automatic transmission adds 38 pounds. That muscle is exemplified with a bold hood scoop (on my SS2 1LE test model), quad exhaust finishers, cooling ducts, four fog lights, a wide-mouth intake on the lower fascia and 20inch-by-10-inch aluminum wheels. Power choices for the 2014 Camaro include the 323-horsepower V-6 in the LS and LT trims that produces 278 pounds per foot of torque with an EPA-rated 19 mpg/city and 30 mpg/ highway; and the 6.2-liter V-8 that stampedes out 426 horsepower and 420 pounds per foot of torque with an EPA rating of 16/24 for Camaro SS manual transmission vehicles. The zero-to-60mph dash was finished off in 4.9 seconds (hand timed) and the quarter-mile was accomplished in 13.4 (hand timed). Passing is confident and hills are glided over. And you get that face of Camaro with thin top grille segmented by vertical bars and the Chevy Bowtie center stage, as well as a trendy new headlight design and black lower grillework

muscle, sportiness and lavishness in a powerful package that measures 190.6 inches long, 75.5 inches wide and 54.2 inches high on a 112.3inch wheelbase. Another version, the L99, is for automatics, and develops 400 horsepower and 410 pounds per foot For those who demand even more power, the all-new, track-capable Camaro Z/28 coupe features a 7-liter LS7 engine rated at an estimated 500 horsepower and the Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible are equipped with a supercharged V-8 that thunders out 580 horsepower and 556 pounds per foot of torque.
