2012 Lexus LFA: Luxury super car exhibits style The concept of supercars is not a new one. Some Point To Mercedes, Jaguar, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, Corvette, AstonMartin, McLaren, Bugatti and the like as true supercar manufacturers, though many car enthusiasts have others they would include on the list, and no list would satisfy everyone. Many describe a supercar as an expensive high-end car that is fast, powerful and luxurious, while imbued with superior handling … a car in a league of its own. In today’s overhyped world, many cars are glorified with the supercar tag, just as many lightweight lowhorsepower vehicles are currently referred to as musclecars. But, we purists reserve the muscle label for high-hp, high-performance, highweight vehicles that adhere to the standards set by those 1960s-’70s V-8s that burned rubber down American highways and dragstrips; and we also reserve the “supercar” tag for those cars that are truly super in stature and performance. A new player in that league is the 2012 Lexus LFA. The initials stand for Lexus-Future-Advance, and the LFA is a car of the future, available today, at a supercar’s price -$375,000. LFA is priced at $375,000 plus destination and handling of $2400 and a gas guzzler tax of $3700 (let’s not quibble if you are willing to ante up $375k), but invoices have been seen at $337,500 plus taxes and destination charges. The LFA is the new flagship for the Lexus FR-line of performance models and elevates Lexus into a new stratosphere. Haruhiko Tanahashi, chief engineer of the LFA’s development program said, “From the very beginning of automobile history, supercars have represented dreams, hopes and aspirations. For Lexus, a brand that aims to provide customers enlightened moments and memorable experiences, the development of a world-class supercar was an indispensable next step”.

ticated, high-revving 4.8-liter V10 engine that thunders out 553 hp and 354 lbs-ft of torque to achieve a factory-estimated top speed of 202 for the 3265-lb. trophy car. This specially developed powerplant is hooked up to a unique six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox with paddle shifters for excellent driver control. Performance personified, my test ride blazed from zero to 60mph in 3.8 seconds, and burned down a quarter-mile dragstrip in 11.9. EPA-rated at 11 City/16 Highway, a week of mixed-use driving achieved a gas-guzzling 12.9mph, but the sheer fun of driving it and the propensity to drive it fast and hard, accelerating at all legal opportunities, kept the consumption high and the mpg figures low. The steering and handling are precise, but the ride is track-sensitive, meaning that on the highway or city streets, every nuance of the road is felt …harshly. Great for track feel, lousy for comfort. The four-wheel independent suspension -- double wishbone front and multi-link rear – with front and rear stabilizer bar and extremely low center gravity help LFA become one with the road or track surface. The grip is unrelenting, body roll is imperceptible and the electrically assisted rackand-pinion steering through twisties, esses and hairpins is on the money.

tion and USB connection. Safety features include intelligent driver and passenger front airbag, dual front side-mounted airbags, 4-wheel ABS, emergency braking assist, front seatbelt pretensioners, stability control, traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, front integrated headrests and tire pressure monitoring. Participants may pose with friends for a complimentary photo shoot in front of the “Truth in 24 II” photo screen.
