Midsize crossover tops in safety and luxury 2012 Lincoln MKX adds full-out luxury in a sports-utility package. ■
The Lincoln MKX debuted in 2006 as a 2007 model, and at the time, many thought the luxury sports-utility-vehicle – we didn’t call them crossovers then – was called the Mark 10. We didn’t realize until later that Lincoln had gone all initialese and it was the “Em-Kay-Ex”. A replacement for the truckbased Lincoln Aviator, which was derived from the Ford Explorer, MKX is car-based with Ford Edge underpinnings serving as its foundation. But MKX is more than just Edge’s platform, powertrain and body panels bulked up in mid-size crossover dimensions. MKX added chrome, a Continental-inspired grille, muscular-yet-elegantly angled architecture, and increased performance, style and full-out luxury in a sports-ute package.
Packed with amenities

tem, fog lamps and bi-functional projector beam halogen headlamps. A true mid-size crossover, MKX measures 186.7 inches long, 76 inches wide (excluding mirrors) and 67.3 inches high on a 111.2-inch wheelbase. Built with unibody construction, MKX offers a ground clearance of 7.9 inches and its FWD version has a curb weight of a light 4236 lbs. (the AWD picks up an additional 177 lbs.) with a weight distribution of 58 percent up front and 42 percent in the rear.
Delivers performance More than simply a “looksmobile”, MKX delivers with power and performance. My test MKX muscled up with a 3.7-liter 24valve T i-VCT V-6 that pops 305hp and 280 lbs-ft of torque. The set-up was standard frontwheel-drive, but AWD is available. Also standard was a sixspeed automatic transmission with manual shifting capability. EPA rated at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway (estimated) for FWD and 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (estimated) for AWD, a week of mixed-use driving garnered an average of 20.2mpg. While MKX isn’t a track star, my test-ute was able to zip from zero to 60mph in 7.5 seconds and completed a quarter-mile in 15.8 seconds – both about mid-range for the segment. With hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering, MKX is stable and sure with enough power to easily complete most maneuvers, though understeer makes MKX more of a family vehicle than a sporty-ute. Acceleration is better than niche average in all ranges and the ride is quiet and comfortable.
Still in its first generation, and built at Ford’s Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, the 2012 MKX is a treasure trove of luxury amenities. Standard interior features are upscale and include heated and cooled front seats, remote start, intelligent access with push button start, rear window defroster, intermittent speed-sensitive front windshield wipers, power, heated exterior body-colored mirrors with memory, auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, leather-trimmed seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, particulate air filtration system, manual tilt/ telescoping steering column, voice-activated SYNC® with Applink®, premium 10-speaker sound system, carpeted front and rear floor mats, and more than a dozen safety features. Ford breaks ground on new plant in eastern China $760 million plant is expected to open in 2015. ■
By DEE-ANN DURBIN Associated Press
HANGZHOU, China — Ford Motor Co. is developing a lower-priced small car for the Chinese market but has no plans to start a separate, cheaper brand in China as rivals General Motors and Volkswagen have. Ford executives discussed their plans during a three-day tour that ended Wednesday at the groundbreaking of a new assembly plant in the eastern city of Hangzhou. The $760 million plant, which is Ford’s first plant on the populous east coast of China, is expected to open in 2015. “Hangzhou is really critical because of the market it serves, and it diversifies our operations,” CEO Alan Mulally said after shoveling some dirt in a ceremony with local officials. He said the city has good infrastructure and a trained workforce that will help Ford expand. Ford won’t say what it plans to build there, but Ford China CEO Dave Shoch confirmed this week that a new small car similar to the Chevrolet Sail will be among the eight vehicles Ford is bringing to China by 2015. Ford’s growth in China has
been stymied by two things: It has just seven vehicles on sale here, compared with 30 for GM, and those it sells are relatively expensive. The Sail starts at around $10,000. Ford’s cheapest offering right now, the subcompact Ford Fiesta, starts at $13,316. “I think Ford cars are safe. The material they use is good and thick, not like the Japanese cars. But the price is pretty expensive,” said Su Xiaoling, 31, a sales manager at a real estate company in Shanghai. Ford executives hope to start changing that perception next year, with the launch of the lower-priced EcoSport and Kuga small SUVs. The new small car will go on sale sometime in the next three years. “We do recognize that we have been playing at the higher end,” Shoch said. Ford Asia Pacific chief Joe H inrichs says the company learned a lot from the development of the Figo, a $6,800 subcompact it sells in India. But Ford won’t sell the Figo, which is smaller than the Fiesta, in China, Hinrichs said, in part because it’s a right-hand drive car. One thing the company won’t do to attract more price-sensitive buyers is form a cheap, Chinese-only brand. Most of Ford’s rivals — including GM, Volkswagen and N issan — have established lower-priced brands in the last

Hinrichs said Ford is studying whether to form a new brand, but thinks China, which has more than 100 car companies, has too many brands already.
So far, the government has approved Ford’s growth plans without insisting on a new brand, he said. Ford is in the midst of its biggest production expansion in 50 years in China. It broke ground on a $600 million plant in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing on Monday and on Tuesday an-
nounced it will bring its Lincoln luxury brand to China in 2014. Ford says the new plants are key to its plan to increase global sales by 50 percent to 8 million by 2015. ––– AP researcher Fu Ting contributed to this report from Shanghai.

Fiesta is Ford’s smallest U.S. car By ANN M. JOB
In Focus
For The Associated Press
The Ford Fiesta is a versatile, budget-conscious small car with a stylish interior and upscale car options such as heated leather seats and voice-recognition controls. The Fiesta also has higher U.S. government fuel economy ratings than does a gasoline-powered Honda Fit. Best of all, the 2013 Fiesta earned five out of five stars in side crash testing by the U.S. government. It’s one of the few subcompacts with such a high score in side crash testing. Available as a five-door hatchback and a sedan, the Fiesta features the lowest starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of any new-model Ford: $13,995 for a base S sedan with five-speed manual transmission and $15,090 for a sedan with automatic. A base, 2013 Fiesta S hatchback with manual starts at $14,995. A Fiesta S hatchback with automatic, however, jumps in price, to $16,090. All 2013 Fiestas have the same, 120-horsepower, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, gasoline engine, though the Fiesta is sold in other some countries with diesel engines and turbocharged power. In the United States, the Fiesta has a large number of small-car competitors. As an example, the starting Fiesta hatchback retail prices are $1,120 and $825 less, respectively, than those for the 2013 Honda Fit with 117-horsepowr, naturally aspirated four-cylinder and manual and automatic transmissions. But the 2013 Kia Rio five-door hatchback with 138-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder has starting MSRPs, including destination charge, that are lower than the Fiesta’s — $14,550 with manual transmission and $15,650 with automatic. Meantime, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic starts at $14,660 as a sedan with manual transmission and $15,730 as a sedan with automatic. As a hatchback, the 2012 Sonic has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $15,560 with manual transmission and $16,630 with automatic. Sonics are available with 138-horsepower, natu-

All Fiesta models come equipped with Ford’s leading safety and security features including driver knee airbag and antitheft engine immobilizer. rally aspirated four cylinder and 138-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder. The turbo four has higher peak torque and it comes on at a lower rpm. Not much has changed for the U.S. Fiesta for the 2013 model year, though standard equipment and equipment packages are realigned. The test Fiesta SE hatchback looked good in its bright red paint with painted aluminum wheels. Fiestas have prominent indentations in their side bodies to add interest. Added-on trim pieces of silver or black are nonexistent, thus conveying a “clean” car that slices through the air. Front styling has a swanky European look — not exactly brawny and not exactly cute. Some buyers may prefer a different appearance, and Ford offers body stripes and different grille inserts as options. The test Fiesta five-door moved along in traffic and merged well, though the car didn’t have super sporty acceleration. Gear shifts were noticeable at times. The transmission was the six-speed PowerShift automatic
that’s Ford’s dual-clutch, semiautomatic mechanism. It was the subject of complaints from consumers last year, but Ford said it has installed new electronic programming to better manage the workings of the transmission. Torque in the Fiesta’s 1.6-liter, double overhead cam, Duratech four cylinder peaks at 112 footpounds at a relatively high 5,000 rpm. In comparison, the Sonic’s 1.8-liter, turbocharged four cylinder delivers 148 foot-pounds of torque at 2,500 rpm. Still, the test Fiesta easily averaged 29 miles per gallon in combined city and highway travel, for a total range of nearly 360 miles on a single tank of gas. This mileage is a bit lower than the combined 33-mpg rating given to this Fiesta model by the U.S. government, which estimates city mileage at 29 mpg and highway mileage at 39 mpg. A Fiesta with extra-charge fuel efficiency package is rated at 40 mpg on the highway. The Honda Fit, in contrast, is rated at 27/33 mpg with automatic transmission and has no extra fuel efficiency package.
The interior of the Fiesta test car had a snappy-looking dashboard arranged with a nice array of controls and features that dispelled any thought that this was a Spartan, cheap vehicle. In fact, the sticker price was barely over $19,000, but the test Fiesta drove with surprising competency and nimbleness. The car absorbed a good number of road bumps without fuss, and while passengers felt vibrations from the road, they weren’t overly intrusive. The driver, meantime, had a good feel for the road in the Fiesta SE hatchback, and found the car tracked accurately in curves. Front suspension is independent MacPherson strut, while a twisted beam and coil springs handle the rear. Rack-and-pinion steering was more precise than expected and added to the driver’s confidence. With conservatively sized, 15inch wheels and tires, the test Fiesta had no feeling of unsprung, or heavy, weight at the corners, which helped explain the satisfactory, non-jarring ride. Yet, at more than 2,500 pounds, overall, for the

test car with automatic transmission, the Fiesta didn’t feel overly lightweight or tinny, either. This stable feel was enhanced by standard AdvanceTrac electronic stability control. The Fiesta also has seven air bags, including one for the driver’s knee to help keep the driver properly positioned behind the steering wheel during a frontal crash. The five-star side government crash tests are impressive for the Fiesta, while frontal crash test results garnered four out of five stars. The Honda Fit earned four out of five stars in side crash testing. But the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic earned five out of five stars in both frontal and side crash testing. Note that Ford had auto journalists recently test drive one of its small, European, turbocharged engines. While Ford made no promises of which U.S. car might get the powerplant, there is speculation that the Fiesta would be a good candidate. Consumer Reports gives the Fiesta a below average reliability rating.

Hyundai Motor reaches deal with labor union By YOUKYUNG LEE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SEOUL, South Korea— Hyundai Motor Co. and its labor union reached a tentative agreement Thursday to eliminate night shifts and increase wages, moving one step closer to end the company’s first strike in four years. The preliminary agreement means that workers will halt limited strikes they have been staging since July, which have resulted in 1.59 trillion won ($1.4 billion) of lost output for South Korea’s largest carmaker, the company said. Hyundai and union officials wrapped up their four-month negotiations and agreed to scrap night shifts starting March 2013. Hyundai will invest 300 billion
won, or $264 million, in facilities to help it maintain the current level of output despite reduced working hours. The deal will be put to a vote by Hyundai’s more than 40,000 unionized workers on Sept. 3. Kwon Oh-il, an official at Hyundai’s labor union, said it was uncertain whether the workers would approve the terms. “In previous years, there were cases when the tentative deal had failed to win majority votes,” Kwon said by phone. Since July, Hyundai’s labor union staged a series of brief walkouts to put pressure on management during negotiations. Workers at Kia Motors Co. and General Motors Co. in Korea also have staged limited strikes to press demands for an end to night shifts and new wage terms.
Earlier this month, unionized workers at GM’s Korea unit rejected a tentative deal reached between management and the union’s board. The union staged a partial strike Wednesday that the company said caused a loss in production of 15,000 vehicles. The strike is expected to make a dent on Hyundai’s bottom line for the current quarter. However, the company will likely meet its sales target this year because it exceeded its production target in the first six months of the year, which could make up for the lost output, analysts said. “The strike is unlikely to have much impact on its annual earnings, though it will affect its quarterly financial results,” said Suh Sung-moon at Korea Investment & Securities.

Auto Briefs Chevy Volt broke monthly sales record in August DETROIT — General Motors says sales of its Chevrolet Volt electric car will break a monthly record in August. The company says it already has sold more than 2,500 Volts this month with two days left. The old record was 2,000 in March. A spokeswoman says about one-third of the sales are in California, where Volt owners can drive alone in carpool lanes. She says sales are growing in other states. So far this year GM has sold more than 13,000 Volts. The car can go about 35 miles on battery power before a small gas generator kicks in to keep it moving. Earlier this week GM said it will close the Volt factory in Detroit next month to control inventory and retool the plant to build the new Chevrolet Impala.
Chinese car maker Chery announces Brazil recall SAO PAULO — A Chinese automaker says it’s recalling nearly 12,500 cars sold in Brazil
after asbestos was found in engine and exhaust gaskets. Chery International says in an emailed statement that it investigated the asbestos problem after it was discovered about two weeks ago in vehicles sold in Australia. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. A recall of 23,000 cars was made in that nation. The automaker says in its Wednesday statement that the Brazil recall is of its Tiggo and Cielo models, both hatchback and sedans. Chery says the asbestos does not pose a risk to drivers during use of vehicles. But it warned owners to not replace the gaskets themselves. Chery is moving strongly into Brazil’s auto market and is now building a $400 million auto plant.
to embrace budget cuts and other reforms following a meeting with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Merkel was in Beijing for talks aimed at boosting trade amid slowing global growth and allaying fears about Europe’s heavy government debts. China has a stake in a resolution not only because Europe is its biggest export market, but because Beijing holds billions of dollars in European bonds. “The European debt crisis has continued to worsen, giving rise to serious concerns in the international community. Frankly speaking, I am also worried,” Wen told reporters after the meeting. “The main worries are two-fold: first is whether Greece will leave the eurozone,” he said. “The second is whether Italy and Spain will take comprehensive rescue measures. Resolving these two problems rests with whether Greece, Spain, Italy and other countries have the determination for reform.” The premier added later, “Resolving the European debt problem requires fiscal Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressed tightening and finding balance within indialarm Thursday about Europe’s debt prob- vidual economies.” lems and called on Greece, Spain and Italy Wen said Beijing would continue to buy

European government bonds so long as “risks are controlled,” the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Ahead of Merkel’s visit, German officials told reporters Berlin wanted to reassure Beijing that European debt is a “safe and good investment.” Later, Wen and Merkel presided at a signing ceremony for billions of dollars in business deals — a regular event during visits by European leaders. Airbus Industrie committed to invest $1.6 billion in the second phase of an aircraft final assembly plant opened in 2008 in Tianjin, Wen’s hometown. A Chinese state company signed an agreement to purchase 50 Airbus jetliners valued at $3.5 billion. Volkswagen AG, Europe’s biggest automaker, signed a deal to invest $219 million in an “environmentally friendly production facility” and vocational training initiative, also in Tianjin. Officials of the two governments also signed agreements to collaborate in biotechnology, electric vehicles, agriculture, education, labor and the environment. –Associated Press
