Acura’s RDX moves mainstream By ANN M. JOB For The Associated Press

Redesigned for 2013, the Acura RDX compact sport utility vehicle is slightly larger, with a more compliant ride, than its predecessor and has more power than ever while beating the popular Lexus RX 350 in fuel economy ratings. The new RDX also has more front- and rear-seat legroom than a Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV and much more cargo space. Better still, the revamped-for2013 RDX is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, where it ranks above average in expected reliability. Pricing is increased an average $1,013 across the four 2013 RDX models from 2012 prices, and the top RDX — with all-wheel drive and technology package — now is just over $40,000. Specifically, starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a base, 2013 RDX is $35,215. This is a front-wheel drive RDX with 273horsepower V-6 and all the standard amenities, such as leathercovered seats, heated front seats, moonroof, rearview camera, keyless access, push-button start, 360-watt audio system, Pandora Internet radio interface and SMS text messaging system. The lowest starting MSRP, including destination charge, for an all-wheel drive, 2013 RDX is $36,615. But even with the price increase, the RDX remains one of the most affordable of smaller-sized, fiveseat, luxury-branded SUVs. As an example, the starting retail price for a 2013 Lexus RX 350 with 270-horsepower V-6 and frontwheel drive is $40,205, while an all-wheel drive, 2013 RX 350 starts at $41,605. The RX 350 is the bestselling, smaller-sized, luxury SUV in the United States. Meantime, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK has a starting retail price of $37,995 and comes standard with 302horsepower V-6 and all-wheel drive. Some fans of the first-generation RDX, which came to market

in 2006 with a turbocharged four cylinder and a firmer ride that lent itself to sporty handling, might grumble over the changes for 2013. But sales of the RDX peaked at 23,367 in 2007 and totaled just 15,196 in calendar 2011, which indicated that there’s not a big market for a sporty-handling, turbo, compact SUV. And by making the RDX more mainstream — with a smoothperforming V-6 instead of sometimes jerky turbo power and with a comfortable, refined ride that makes everything from city streets to concrete highways more tolerable — Acura is broadly expanding this SUV’s appeal. The pleasing ride was one of the first things noticed in the test RDX AWD Tech model priced at $40,315. The new RDX suspension, along with slightly wider track and longer wheelbase, managed even potholes with ease, removed the sharpness of speed bump undulations and smoothed out the “whomps” of expansion cracks on bridges. A three-hour drive on highways and country roads in the quiet RDX interior was fatigue-free on nicely supportive but not overly firm front seats. Driver and passenger remarked the trip could have gone on without a problem. The suspension —MacPherson struts up front and a multilink design in back — use new dampers that will be put in other new Acuras. These amplitude-reactive dampers are new to Acura and have a two-valve design that basically acts like two suspension systems. One is “soft” in situations such as small bumps and smooth roads and the other is firm, for big bumps and during aggressive cornering. The driver, however, does nothing to activate these dampers, which work automatically. Horsepower is boosted by 33 in the new RDX because of the 3.5-liter, single overhead cam V-6. Peak torque of 251 foot-pounds at 5,000 rpm from the V-6 is a bit less than the 260 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm from last year’s 2.3-liter, turbo four cylinder. But the test 2013 RDX moved forward with spunk and merged well into traffic. Powe r c a m e o n s m o o t h ly through the new six-speed automatic transmission that includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel for drivers who want to experience some sporty shifts. Sounds from the V-6 also were quieter and less frenetic than those that came from the turbo four. Most impressively, the tester with AWD delivered nearly 24 miles per gallon in combined driving that was some 70 percent at highway speeds and 30 percent on city streets.

This is in part because of a fuelsaving, engine cylinder deactivation system that worked seamlessly in the test RDX to shut down cylinders that weren’t needed at times. Plus, the new RDX is more aerodynamic in its styling and weighs some 600 pounds less than the Lexus RX 350. No wonder, then, that the federal government’s fuel economy rating of 19/27 mpg for a 2013 RDX FWD is better than the 19/24-mpg rating for last year’s four-cylinder RDX. And it’s higher than the 18/25mpg rating for the 2013 Lexus RX 350 FWD. The tester’s mileage gave a 380mile range on a single tank, and while premium gasoline is recommended, it is not required. Inside, the new RDX instru-

ment gauges are a bit less sporty and more mainstream than before, which fits nicely with the new personality. Most notable are the sizable buttons and controls on the center part of the dashboard. There’s no hunting to find tiny knobs or subtly indented buttons. The rearview camera comes standard with yellow lines that depict the width of the RDX along its projected, rearward path as the vehicle backs up. Front and rear legroom of 42 inches and 38.3 inches is better than what’s in the Mercedes GLK, especially the GLK’s 35.1 inches of back-seat legroom. The RDX bests the GLK in cargo space, too, offering 76.9 cubic feet behind with rear seats folded vs. just 54.7 cubic feet in the Mercedes.

2012 Audi A6 3.0T: Mid-size luxury sedan upscales Audi’s executive luxury mid-size sedan, the A6, is the No.4-selling luxury vehicle in America, and has begun its fourth generation with the same liquid style, elegant lines, power, pampering and performance that epitomized the first three versions. Beginning as a cloned Audi 5000 in 1994, the A6 fills the mid-size portion of Audi’s executive line, complimenting the full-size A8 and looking quite like its smaller sibling, the A4. Manufactured in Neckarsulm, Baden Wuertemberg, Germany, the 2012 Audi A6 has sculpted its shoulders, added raised door handles, tweaked the previous generation’s grille, headlights, and taillights and increased its wheelbase by nearly 3 inches. And that’s just the exterior. Inside, A6 has upscaled with available oak trim, increased ambience and grace, and added a large information screen and optional heads-up display. Power is also increased and handling has been fine-tuned even further.

Increased aerodynamics The A6 architecture is newly conceived, with an extended wheelbase to shorten overhangs, which has created a more performance-oriented look while delivering improved ride quality and interior space. Its sloped roofline increases aerodynamics and sporty driving characteristics, and the manufacturer’s use of highefficiency diode lasers to weld the roof to the side panel frame structure has generated a sleek “zero joint” seam. All of this has helped reduce A6’s drag coefficient to 0.26Cd. A6’s galvanized steel body utilizes an aluminum hood and front fenders to save weight, and comes in at a curb weight of 4045 lbs. -- 78 lbs. lighter than the previous generation. With a multi-step anti-corrosion protection system employed within the construction (12-year limited warranty against corrosion perforation), A6 delivers extra luxury touches from the body up. Measuring 193.9 inches long, 73.8 inches wide and 57.8 inches high on a 114.7-inch wheelbase, the mid-size A6 is sleek and

offers 4.6 inches of ground clearance.

Turbocharged power Audi A6 is graceful on the outside and powerfully efficient under the hood. The 2.0T sedan is equipped with a 4-cylinder 211hp/258 lbs-ft. 2.0 liter turbocharged engine. My 3.0T Premium utilizes a 3.0-liter TFSI supercharged V-6, generating 310 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed Tiptronic® transmission. The manufacturer says the 2.0 will sprint from zero to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, and my test 3.0T V6, supercharged, with spark-ignition direct injection and a 130mph speed governor, completed the dash in 5.4 seconds en route to a 13.8-second quarter-mile. EPA estimates are 19 city/28 highway/22 average for the 3.0T and my test A6 averaged 20.4 mpg in mixeduse driving. The 2.0 is rated at 25/33/28. A6 is a driver’s car with responsive electromechanical steering and exceptional balance. Its modular longitudinal platform aids stability and in extreme hairpins and softer twisties, the previous generation’s understeer has been diminished significantly. A6 accelerates deftly with supercharged low-torque power and has good high-range ability as well. The five-link front suspension with an anti roll bar, twin-tube-gas-filled shock absorbers and trapezoidal-link rear with twin-tube-gas-filled shock absorbers is a bit loose, but confidently smoothes road irregularities. Braking is self-assured with the electronic stability program, antilock brakes and electronic rear brake pressure proportioning.

Wraparound cabin design The wraparound skyline cockpit is indulgent with exquisite fit and finish, a bevy of advanced communication technologies, ambient lighting , keyless start, ergonomic seats with power lumbar up front, leather seating surfaces (partial leather), three zone automatic air conditioning and metallic accents, including chrome bezels framing air vents. The cabin is also spacious with seating for five -- 37.2 inches of front headroom and 37.8 inches in the second row, 41.3 inches of legroom in row one and 37.4 in row two, with shoulder room of 57.5 and 56.3. From a safety perspective A6 is attentive as more than 4,000 crash simulations were carried out to ensure that each component is designed and manufactured to exacting standards. A6 safety items include a front-end crumple zone carefully constructed to absorb energy from

frontal impact and the engine and front axle divert energy to a fortified floor and tunnel structure. Also included are an adaptive restraint system, side and curtain airbags, Audi pre sense that initiates protective measures if it detects an imminent collision, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, and systems that warn the presence of other vehicles and activate if a rear-end impact appears imminent. The 2012 Audi A6 2.0 starts at $42,200. The 3.0T in Premium trim starts at $50,400 with destination charges of $895. My test vehicle’s upgrades included a $5900 Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 1,300 watts of power, 15 speakers, subwoofer and center speaker, acoustic lens technology, Digital Signal Processing and ICE power digital amplification. Also onboard was the $5800 Innovation Package that included adaptive cruise control, Audi presense plus collision prepared-

ness system, Audi side assist blind-spot monitoring system, LED headlights, head-up display, Night Vision Assistant infrared camera and heated, power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory. The final addon was the $1500 19-Inch Sport Package that replaced the standard 17-inch wheels with 19inch 15-spoke wheels covered by 255/40R19 performance tires and utilized a sport suspension and three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles.
