Acura adds entry-level compact vehicle to its arsenal By ANN M. JOB

In Focus

AssociAted Press

Acura’s newest sedan, the 2013 ILX, looks good, is fuel-conscious and has a controlled, comfortable ride. But its base retail price, including destination charge, is only $26,795. This is $4,110 below the previous lowest-priced Acura, the 2012 TSX compact sedan that starts at $30,905. Best of all, the ILX isn’t a barebones Acura. The starting price includes noteworthy standard features such as moonroof, sixspeaker audio system, 5-inch color information display on the dashboard, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, dual, automatic climate control, keyless entry and push-button start. Also standard: A Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging feature that can read text messages to the driver and respond to each message with one of six pre-set replies, such as, “Talk to you later, I’m driving.” A driver must have a compatible device, such as a Blackberry, to tie in to this feature. Acura officials said the new ILX is designed to attract young buyers to the luxury brand, which is part of Honda. In fact, most drivers wouldn’t have a clue the ILX is based on the Honda Civic, a compact car that has been a staple of young people in the United States for years. But the ILX is much more than a revamped Civic. While the ILX uses the Civic’s front-wheel drive platform, there’s not a single piece of metal on the outside that’s from the Civic. In fact, the ILX is a bit longer and wider than a Civic sedan. The interior is all Acura, with good use of textures and materials and thoughtful design of controls to craft a pleasing passenger compartment. The ILX suspension, which gives the five-seater a composed ride, is better than the Civic’s, too. Extra sound insulation makes the ILX interior far quieter than a Civic, as well. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is for a base, five-passenger ILX with 150-horsepower, four cylinder mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

2013 Acura ILX Premium BASE PRICE: $25,900 for base automatic model; $28,900 for Hybrid; $29,200 for manual Premium. PRICE AS TESTED: $30,095. TyPE: Front engine, front-wheeldrive, five-passenger compact luxury sedan. ENGINE: 2.4-liter, double overhead cam, four cylinder mated with i-Vtec. MILEAGE: 22 mpg (city), 31 mpg (highway). TOP SPEED: 130 mph.

Associated Press

This undated image made available by Honda shows the 2013 Acura ILX 2.0L.

LENGTH: 179.1 inches. WHEELBASE: 105.1 inches. CURB WEIGHT: 2,978 pounds.

There’s no manual transmission for the base engine. But a 201horsepower four cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission is available on a ILX Premium model for a starting retail price of $30,095. There is no automatic transmission for this higher-powered version of ILX. But this model comes with standard heated, leathertrimmed seats, larger, 17-inch wheels and tires and high-intensity discharge headlights. A third ILX model is a gasolineelectric hybrid — Acura’s first — that has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $29,795. The ILX Hybrid, with hybrid technology similar to the Civic’s, has a federal government fuel economy rating of 39 miles per gallon in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway. This compares with 24/35-mpg rating for the ILX with 150-horsepower four cylinder and 22/31mpg rating for the ILX with 201horsepower engine. For the record, the test ILX nonhybrid model with 201-horse engine and manual six speed averaged 28 mpg in city/highway

travel, without the driver trying to conserve fuel. This 28 mpg is 12 percent higher than the government’s city/highway rating of 25 mpg for this model, and translated into a range of nearly 370 miles on a single tank of fuel. Note: Acura recommends but does not require premium unleaded gasoline for the ILX. Acura officials compare the ILX to other entry-level luxury compacts, such as the 2012 Audi A3, which has a starting retail price of $28,145 with 200-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder and manual transmission. But many mainstream cars — even mid-size sedans with a fair amount of amenities — fit into the ILX price range. For example, a mid-size, 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid has a starting retail price of $29,570, which is only $225 less than the ILX Hybrid’s base price. The base Fusion Hybrid, however, doesn’t include a moonroof, while the ILX Hybrid does. The test ILX Premium model had a lightness to the electric steering that was noticed but not troubling.

The most surprising experience in the ILX: How confidently the car handled in curves and turns. It tracked solidly and felt stable on the road, even in emergency situations. The 2.4-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder in the tester is the same one that’s in Acura’s slightly larger TSX sedan. Power came on quickly and the car moved through traffic with pep. Torque peaks at 170 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm. The six-speed manual in the tester moved smoothly and precisely from gear to gear in satisfying fashion and was so pleasurable, the driver didn’t feel a need to use the standard paddle shifters. There was little wind noise, but some road noise came through to passengers. Rear-seat legroom of 34 inches was fine for me — someone 5 feet 4 — and there’s hardly a hump in the middle of the rear floor. But three adults back there would sit touching each other. Everyone in the ILX rests on comfortable cushions that have some give as well as support. Ev-

eryone has a head restraint, too. Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, front, side-seat and curtain air bags, traction control and electronic stability control. Fun touches: A driver can select the color for the background of the information display on the dashboard, and Pandora radio interface is standard. Interestingly, the ILX test car had a memorable “clean” smell inside. It was pleasant but not the usual chemical-laden “new car smell.” The styling of the ILX also turned heads. The ILX has been the subject of a safety recall. Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a cable connecting a door handle to a door latch might become loose and affect the ability of the door latch to operate properly.

All About Cars

Small truck outsells its large iconic brother The No.5-selling truck in America so far this year is the Toyota Tacoma, and while the Tundra may be Toyota’s truck icon, Tacoma is a bigger hit in total sales than the big truck. Toyota began selling trucks in 1935, with its G1, a one-and-ahalf-ton stake bed truck. In 1947, they introduced their first compact truck, the 27hp Toyopet Model SB. Toyota moved on to the 85hp Stout in 1964, their first pick-up sold in America, and then came its first truck winner in terms of market share, the 85hp Hi-Lux, in 1969. The Hi-Lux name is still around today in most of the world, but to America, since 1995, it has been called the Tacoma. Toyota officials eventually settled on the name Tacoma to appeal to the American market, but from 1976 until the Tacoma introduction in 1995, it was just called: The Toyota Truck or The Toyota Pick-Up. Now, in its ninth generation, when all the pervious names and configurations are totaled, the 2012 Tacoma has received a trendy facelift inside and out, and has benefitted from added high-tech items throughout.

Refreshed for 2012

By Mike Blake

ma measured 208.1 inches long, 74.0 inches wide and 65.6 inches high on a 127.4-inch wheelbase. Versions of the truck can be as much as 221.3 inches long with a long bed, as much as 74.6 inches wide with a 4x4 Access Cab and as much as 70.3 inches high. My test truck weighed in at less than two tons – 3835 lbs. -- and had a tow rating of 3500 lbs.

Two engines to choose from With two engine choices, Tacoma can go economical or muscular. The eco-engine is the 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, DOHC 16-valve cast iron block powerplant with aluminum alloy head and VVT-i. With the 2WD manual, it is EPA rated at 21/25 and the 4WD manual is estimated at 18/20 (the automatic gets an 18/21 estimate). The inline-4 provides 159hp and 180 lbs-ft of torque. My test 4x4 automatic was outfitted with the larger engine, a 24-valve aluminum block 4.0-liter DOHC EFI V-6 engine with aluminum alloy head and VVT-I. It was EPA rated at 17/21 and the 2WD manual goes 16/21. The electronic fuel-injected plant stampedes out 236 horses and 266 lbsft of torque, which is more than enough to move a heavy load. It was also enough power to tackle a zero to 60mph sprint in 7.6 seconds and to complete a quartermile run in 16.2 seconds. Tacoma’s coil spring independent double wishbone front suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers and a leaf spring rigid rear suspension are firm and make for a solid niche ride on pavement with decent off-road capabilities. Steering is a bit vague and better at slow speeds than high-velocity maneuvers. Front disc and rear drum brakes with Brake Control System with Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Braking Distribution and Brake Assist combine for adequate, but not exemplary stopping.

The midsize pick-up gets a refreshed front-end design and updated interior for 2012, with a redesigned hood, grille, headlamps and front bumper outside and a new center-instrument panel design with a revised gauge cluster and new steering wheel, inside. The redesigned interior center stack adds new air conditioner/ heater controls and power point locations, and cabin upgrades include a black high-contrast center console, switch plate covers, dash and upper door trim. The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is offered in Regular Cab, Access Cab (an extended cab with small rearhinged doors) and Double Cab (crew cab with four full-size fronthinged doors) configurations. Both Regular and Access Cabs come with a 6-foot bed. A 5-foot bed is standard on Double Cab models, with a 6-foot bed available as an option, and all three Tacoma body styles are offered in a choice of two- or four-wheel drive. My test Tacoma was the base 4x4 with an Access Cab. Dimensions for the base Tacoma go 190.4 inches long with a short bed. Width is 72.23 inches and height is 65.7 inches, with 7.9 inches of ground clearance and a 109.6-inch Roomy cabin accommodations wheelbase. My Access Cab TacoWith seating capacity for two in

The double cab provides 32.4 inches of second row legroom. The base 2012 Tacoma starts at $17,935. My test Tacoma 4x4 with an Access Cab and short bed started at $26,995 including an $810 Delivery, Processing and Handling fee; and choices go all the way to the Double Cab

Motors,” Zarzour says. “They were suspending my credit line. We had 30-some employees that were out of work. My wife and I were the last ones there. You know, it was like the dream that we worked for, and that we worked so hard for, was gone.” Analysis: The ad aired by Romney’s campaign and the national Republican Party attacks President Barack Obama’s support for the auto industry bailout by focusing on an Ohio GM dealer forced to close in 2009. It was released Wednesday as Obama campaigned in Ohio, a battleground state. The ad blames the administration for dealership closures across Ohio, ignoring the fuller picture of what happened in the auto industry in recent years and the government’s role. The auto bailout was enacted by Republican President George W. Bush in 2008 and continued under Obama, sending government money to GM and Chrysler. Romney says the automakers should have been left to go through bankruptcy without government assistance. GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy on the strength of the bailout. Neither Bush nor Obama believed the automakers would have survived without that backup from taxpayers. Romney’s very different prescription was to save the automakers by having them go through bankruptcy, with the government guaranteeing financing afterward and backing up new-car warranties. Those government loan and warranty guarantees would have been far cheaper than the nearly $85 billion bailout. Given the chaos in private lending institutions at the time, there’s a good deal of skepticism that Romney’s approach would have worked. The bailout issue is important in at least two general election swing states: Ohio and Michigan, where the auto bailouts are popular.

Romney’s ad blames Obama for something GM had sought for years — cutting its dealer network to boost profitability. It’s the kind of calculated move Romney was so familiar with in his work turning around struggling businesses as CEO at private equity firm Bain Capital. GM, along with other U.S. auto manufacturers, had been stuck with a post-World War II dealer network that was oversaturated in big cities and inner suburbs. As more affluent families moved to outer suburbs, those close-in dealers had to fight for a shrinking piece of the market. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Cleveland. The dealer featured in the ad is from Lyndhurst, a suburb on Cleveland’s east side. Cleveland has many suburbs, and nearly all had a GM dealer. Buyers would play one dealer off another to get discounts, so the dealers wouldn’t make much money on sales. That meant they had little to invest in their buildings or to advertise, hurting GM’s competitive position. At the same time, Honda and Toyota were building shiny new dealerships in more affluent areas. There were fewer of them, so they made more money and they advertised a lot more. Plus, their buildings were more modern than the GM dealerships in older neighborhoods. GM wanted to cull the ranks to make the remaining dealers healthy. The company was able to do it while going through the government-mandated restructuring to fix its business. While a lot of longtime dealers lost their franchises, it made good business sense. Now GM’s dealers are making money and investing in buildings and advertising, and the company posted record profits last year. –Associated Press

Auto Roundup GM profit falls 41 percent on weakness in Europe DETROIT — A big loss in Europe dragged down General Motors’ second-quarter profit. The automaker’s net income from April through June fell 41 percent to $1.5 billion, $1 billion less than the same quarter a year earlier, GM said on Thursday. A $361 million loss in Europe, coupled with $19 million of red ink in South America, pulled down strong performances in North America and Asia. In last year’s second quarter, GM made $102 million in Europe before taxes. European nations are struggling to contain a debt crisis, weak economies and high unemployment, which have sapped car buying in the region. Even North America, GM’s profit center, showed weakness. Pretax profit fell almost 13 percent to about $2 billion. International operations, which include China, saw pretax earnings fall 3 percent to a $557 million. Overall revenue slipped 5 percent to $37.6 billion. The company’s overall profit was better than Wall Street expected. GM earned 90 cents per share, compared with 75 cents forecast by analysts. Shares rose 9 cents to $ 19.75 in early trading Thursday. Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann wouldn’t predict when GM would make money again in Europe, saying it was largely dependent on the broader regional economy. “We don’t know exactly how that’s going to unfold,” he said. GM is restructuring in Europe and has an array of new vehicles coming out this year and next around the globe. Ammann said that’s reason for optimism. “That makes us feel good about the general prospects for the business going forward,” he said. Still, the company predicted that

its third-quarter North American pretax profit is likely to be below second-quarter results. GM’s European sales, which include mainly the Opel and Vauxhall brands, fell 7 percent to 454,000 vehicles during the quarter as several countries went into recession and government debt problems scared away buyers. But Ammann said GM was able to keep its prices relatively steady as people paid more for new models, offsetting discounts on older models. Earlier this month GM replaced its European CEO and added three outsiders to its management team there, including two from Volkswagen, the region’s top automaker. In North America, Ammann said he wasn’t worried about the slip in pretax profits. During the quarter, the company shifted its salaried pension plan to an insurance company annuity, and that cut pension income by about $200 million. GM also cut truck production during the quarter as it readied for all-new models in 2013, and that affected income, Ammann said.

In the meantime, the company is telling drivers to contact their dealers if they hear an abnormal sound in the rear of the vehicle.

Harley-Davidson 2Q profit up 30 pct on US demand

MILWAUKEE — Harley-Davidson Inc. says its second-quarter net income jumped 30 percent on higher U.S. demand for motorcycles. Harley reported net income of $247.3 million, or $1.07 per share, for the three months ended July 1. That’s up from $190.6 million, or 81 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.05 per share. Revenue jumped 17 percent to $1.57 billion. That was below average Wall Street expectations of $1.64 billion. The company says its sales were hurt by warmer-thanusual weather in the first quarter that pulled forward some sales. By volume, retail sales of new bikes rose 2.8 percent worldwide, while U.S. unit sales increased 4 percent. Harley says it’s cautious about its prospects for the rest of the year, DETROIT — Toyota is recalling given the economic uncertainty, 778,000 RAV4 SUVs and Lexus especially in Europe.
