NO SACRIFICE Eco-friendly bathroom renovations that still have plenty of style and luxury Brandpoint Elegant, planet-friendly bathrooms continue to be a hot trend in home building and renovation. Bath products that respect and celebrate water have become trendier and more satisfying, proving that homeowners don’t need to sacrifice comfort, beauty and luxury in order to do something good for the environment. The secret to achieving a pleasing and environmentally friendly bathroom ren-
ovation is choosing the right combination of fixtures and accessories — and realizing that the bathroom is one room that’s well worth investing a bit more in to achieve great upgrades that are modern and lasting.
Worth the investment Bathrooms sell homes. An upscale bathroom remodel that costs around $50,000 will recoup more than 58 percent of its original cost at the time of resale, according to Remodeling Magazine’s
Cost vs. Value Report. A mid-range renovation returns even more on your investment — 65 percent. The bathroom is one room where dollar value also meets aesthetic appeal. Considering how much time Americans spend in the bathroom, and how many of us consider the bath a restful oasis where we can close the door on the 24/7 wired world, it’s easy to justify spending a bit more to achieve the bathroom of your dreams.

Bathroom Continued from RE3 name” in the bathroom, says the influential real estate blog Zillow.com TOTO product designs are distinctive but adaptable, so they work well with a wide range of styles and architectural expressions. The manufacturer’s elegant 11-inch Rain Showerhead uses a water-sipping 1.75 gallons per minute to deliver a luxurious shower experience and appreciable water savings. And its Keane Lavatory Faucet consumes just 1.5 gallons of water per minute, without sacrificing an ounce of performance. TOTO toilets have earned a reputation as the “Subzero of the toilet world,” according to the New York Times. They perfectly marry exceptional design with EPA WaterSense-level con-
servation. The UltraMax II 1G toilet uses a single gallon of water per flush to effectively clear the bowl, and offers an elegant, upscale design to enhance any bathroom renovation. Visit www.totousa.com to learn more.
Greener design elements When it comes to other design elements in the bathroom, such as flooring and lighting, it’s easy to find greener options that are also high-end and visually striking. The cost of quarrying and transporting from point of origin to point of sale can make natural stone less than eco-friendly. Instead, consider using recycled flooring material, such as pebbled tiles made from recycled glass or plain recy-
cled glass tiles. Reclaimed wood can also work wonderfully in an upscale bathroom, imparting a look that is both rich and rustic. Or, if you prefer newer wood, opt for cork or bamboo; both resist mold and mildew, and repel moisture. And both are among the hottest flooring choices for savvy interior designers. Finally, improving the electricity efficiency of your bathroom lighting is as simple as replacing incandescent bulbs with energysipping LEDs or CFLs. The looks and sizes available in both types of energy-efficient bulbs seems to expand every year, so it’s possible to find one that will fit in any light fixture — turning even high-end luxury lights into eco-friendly, energy efficient options.

Green life Continued from RE7 You can reduce your water usage in numerous ways. At home and work, you should use WaterSense-labeled toilets, sinks and showerheads. Because both businesses and homeowners like to save, check out epa.gov to find rebates for water-wise improvements. Additionally, remember to turn off water when appropriate — such as when you brush your teeth or are rubbing your hands together to generate soap bubbles. Keep showers to 10 minutes or less. • Look for products that use reclaimed materials Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash, and recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of this material in 2011, which is equivalent to a 34.7 percent recycling rate, the EPA re-
ports. This rate is pretty impressive, and with waste now being employed as the primary ingredient for things we use every day, this number is likely to rise. Reclaimed rubber is one such example. Ecore, a rubber flooring company, uses reclaimed rubber tires to make commercial flooring, and has been doing so for more than 25 years. Old, exhausted treads of tractor-trailer tires are ground, screened and separated to remove contaminants — creating a durable flooring option for businesses. • Go green with your greenery Being strategic about what plants you use for landscaping at home and work can help you conserve water and reduce maintenance requirements. Use natural vegetation appropriate for the re-
Midstate Homes Drier Cleaner gion where you live. Ask your Healthier nursery or state’s extension service about shrubs, trees and ground covers that are good alternatives to grass. Native plants quickly adapt to changing climate conditions, so you’ll spend less time trimming and watering. While you have your green thumb out, consider placing a few houseplants in your office and throughout your home. As part of plants’ natural photosynthesis process, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which helps to naturally clean the air around us. Some houseplants have even been shown to remove formaldehyde and benzene pollutants from the air. Increase your indoor air quality with a few good greens. Try houseplant varieties like philodendron, spider plants, (chlorophytum comosum) or peace lilies (spathiphyllum).

Protecting your home and family when the power goes out — and stays out Brandpoint Super storms like Sandy, major floods in Colorado and other natural disasters remind us of the devastating impact a long-term power outage can have on a community. But it doesn’t take a major disaster to take down the power — and make life difficult — for days. A basic winter storm with heavy snow and ice can do the trick, too. “Extended power loss in the wake of a storm or natural disaster can be as damaging and threatening as the disaster itself,” cautions Ed Del Grande, a master contractor and nationally syn-
dicated home improvement expert. “Food spoiling in the refrigerator or an uncomfortable temperature in your home may be the least of your worries. When the power’s out, your home’s sump pump won’t work and could cause flooding. A home-based business could lose important data and days of operations. And family members with special needs may be especially affected. With hurricane season in full swing and winter rapidly approaching, it makes sense to prepare your home and family to face a potential power outage. The experts at Kohler Generators offer some advice:
LOG CABIN ON 10 ACRES!
• Have a plan that covers how you will evacuate your home and neighborhood, if necessary, an established meeting place if you lose contact with loved ones, and a list of important phone numbers such as doctors, family members, etc. • Prepare an emergency kit using a backpack or a large plastic bucket with a lid. Stock it with three days’ worth of nonperishable food and water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a battery-powered or handcranked radio, batterypowered clock, first aid kit, cash, medications and a CD or USB drive that contains digital copies of important
documents. Store your kit in a secure location that you can get to easily in case of emergency. • If you’re ordered to evacuate, do so immediately. If you’re able to ride out the storm in your home, turn off and/or unplug major appliances like water heaters, stoves and air conditioning units. Unplug electronics like TVs and PCs, microwaves and stereos. This will help prevent damage to appliances and avoid overloading the system when the power comes back on. Leave just one light on so See Power outage, RE14

Seven simple tips for prepping your home for the holidays Brandpoint
There’s something about the holiday season that makes gathering with family and friends extra special. But between the cooking, decorating and shopping, preparing for the holidays with that never-ending todo list can be overwhelming. To reduce stress and stay organized, make a list of all the tasks you need to complete around the house, and apply a deadline for each project. This will help you prioritize and stay on schedule, eliminating any lastminute scrambles. Of course, there are standard household chores like vacuuming, window wip-
ing and counter cleaning, but don’t forget to consider these other holiday prep projects that may not be on your list. 1. Clean the oven — The oven is the heart of any kitchen, so it’s especially

Power outage Continued from RE12 you’ll know when the power is restored. • Never connect a portable generator directly into the electrical system of your home; electricity could flow backward into the power lines, endangering lives. Plug appliances directly into a portable generator using properly rated extension cords. Make sure the portable generator is properly vented to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Never bring a portable generator into your home, garage or on a porch. Keep it outside with plenty of ventilation at all times.
• To keep your home upand-running during a power outage, consider permanently installing a standby generator before trouble arrives. While portable generators can power one or two appliances, a standby generator can supply power for your whole house. A professional installer can place a standby generator outside your home; it looks similar to a central air conditioning unit and runs on natural gas or propane, using existing gas lines. When the power goes out, the standby generator automatically turns on to power critical and sophisticated appliances and systems such as heating
and cooling, lights, refrigerators, sump pumps and home security systems. Kohler, a leading manufacturer of automatic standby generators, advises homeowners considering a standby generator to: • Look for a unit that offers clean, consistent power and can handle heavy loads. A generator that produces sub-standard power could damage sophisticated electronics like HD TVs, stereos and computers. A generator that struggles to handle heavy loads will be less efficient and may even fail in a pinch. • Choose a unit that can power up quickly, allow-
ing you to keep your home functioning without interruption. A unit that powers up slowly may only handle a few circuits at a time, forcing you to choose between which essential appliance or system you’ll power up first. • Consider appearance, since a standby unit sits outside the home. Also, look for a unit that is corrosion-resistant — an especially important consideration for homes near water. To learn more about standby power and to get an idea of the size generator your home would need, visit www.KOHLERGen erators.com.

Home prep Continued from RE14 important to clean it to prevent excess smoke and other kitchen hazards. But don’t create additional problems by using a cleaner with smelly fumes. Rather, opt for a quick, easy-touse product like Goo Gone Oven & Grill Cleaner, a surface-safe alternative to general oven cleaners that does the work for you with its-super-cling foam and low odor formula. Look for
it at your local retailer or purchase it online at www. googone.com. 2. Clear the fridge — Create space in your fridge and throw out any expired products, making room for your holiday menu items and any unexpected dishes that guests may bring. While you’re at it, make sure you clear plenty of counter space for your holiday menu items. 3. Freshen the carpet — Regular vacuuming will
help eliminate surface dirt and pet hair, but it won’t eliminate set-in stains and ground-in grime. Depending on budget and time, you can either rent a carpet deep cleaner or hire a professional to clean the carpeted rooms of your home prior to hosting your big holiday event. In a time crunch? Focus on the high-traffic areas of your home like the living, family and dining rooms. 4. Empty a closet — No one wants to wear a wrin-
kled coat home from a party. Instead of tossing guests’ coats in a bedroom, maintain your privacy and clear out a closet near an entry where guests can hang their coats while visiting. 5. Create more space — Give guests the freedom to unwind and relax at your holiday gathering by offering them enough space to do so. Store extra throw pillows, blankets and toys in bins or chests to create more seating space for guests.
6. Deodorize your home — What’s a surefire way to put a damper on your holiday gathering? Have guests enter a space plagued by unpleasant odors. Keep deodorizing sprays, candles or oils on hand to add a favorite scent to a room or to eliminate any undesirable odors left behind from an unfortunate cooking incident. For a cheaper alternative, boil an orange peel, which releases its natural oils into the air for a pleas-
ant citrus scent. 7. Stock extra toiletries — For overnight guests, provide extra toiletries they may have forgotten like travel-size shampoo, soap, lotion, shaving cream, toothpaste, a toothbrush and cotton swabs. With these tips, some time and a bit of advanced planning, your home will be holiday-ready, leaving you stress-free to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with those you love.
