Home-design trends are set to revolutionize the housing market Brandpoint
The housing market is thriving in many parts of the country, and the driving force is an estimated 92 million Gen Now consumers between the ages of 19 and 37 that will enter the market to become new homebuyers by the year 2020. These consumers have grown up during the introduction of the Internet, social networking, mobile devices and a huge recession. Not surprising, this massive group is demanding far different features in their homes from what their parents and grandparents have desired in the past, and it may forever change the way homes are designed and built in the future. “Gen Now is taking a fresh approach to homeownership by seeking simpler living with smart upgrades,” says Carl Hill, director of mar-

Undoing open house decor to make a new home your own Treat your windows well
Brandpoint
When selling a house, the mantra for most is neutral, neutral, neutral. To help potential new owners envision themselves moving in, real estate experts remind sellers to de-personalize their homes. That means removing family photos and mementos and replacing favorite color schemes with more vanilla shades and hues. So as a new homeowner, how do you begin to de-neutralize your new house to make it your new home?
Color your world
It’s a pretty safe bet that as the previous homeowners were preparing to sell, they went through the house and repainted with shades of beige or gray. While nice for an open house, these colors can be a little impersonal.
Brandpoint
Neutral colors help buyers see themselves in the house and a fresh coat of paint is one of the best ways for new owners to make their mark. It’s also likely the homeowners didn’t invest in the highest quality paint, saving that money for their new home. Therefore, one of the best ways to make your mark is by giving rooms a fresh coat of paint.
Choose colors that reflect your personality and style, and don’t be afraid to select bolder hues. Darker, more vibrant colors work well, especially for accent walls or rooms that could use some drama, like your guest bath.
When it comes to the floors, most real estate agents advise their clients to replace carpeting before the house goes on the market, particularly if it’s worn or on the more colorful side. As a result, you can hold off on the expense of putting in new carpet and instead look at window treatments. Once you paint, the blinds, curtains or cornice boards that were part of the open house staging efforts may not fit in with your decor. Consider the function you need from window treatments. Do you need to create privacy as well as style? Is blocking light essential, like in a bedroom, or would sheer drapes be an option? Will the treatments be used in a child’s room, making cordless blinds important? Examining the function will
help you determine the type of window treatment to select. Once you decide what type of window treatment is best suited for a particular room and window, you can begin to look at fabrics and colors that complement your paint choice and provide your new home with a fine finishing touch.
Bring in your belongings During the open house, you used your imagination to picture where your family heirlooms and prized possessions would be placed. Now, it’s time to turn that picture into a reality. Collect your photos, mirrors, artwork and other objects. Then look around your new house to create a blueprint of what to hang or place, and where. Sticky notes provide an easy method for remembering where
items will reside. To create your desired look, you may need to replace photo matting or frames to match or contrast with new paint colors. You’ll also want to look at room features, like fireplaces or angled walls and ceilings, and position objects to highlight them, rather than hide them. Now that your home is no longer an open house, you can feel free to nix the neutrals and instead use color, style and accessories to identify it as yours. While the previous homeowners may have done many things to get the house showready, you have to evaluate the quality of products used, the integrity of the workmanship and, most importantly, the feeling you want your home to evoke, as you embark on projects.

A neoclassical moment in decor By Kim Cook Associated Press If you’re a fan of traditional décor, you probably appreciate the elegant lines and rich history of neoclassical style. Interest in classical style really took off in the second half of the 18th century, when Scottish architect Robert Adam began using its elements in fancy homes, says London designer Adrienne Chin. Adam recast urns, sphinxes and vine leaves as decorative elements in mirrors and moldings. “Adam’s style owed much to the archaeological discoveries of Greco-Roman domestic architecture at Pompeii and Herculaneum,” says Chinn.
The historical discoveries also inspired the development of neoclassical furniture, which replaced the fussy rococo style with more linear, geometric silhouettes. Today, Greco-Roman classicism is the basis of many interior décor styles — Louis XV, Regency, Federal and Georgian among them, says New York designer Elaine Griffin. “As the oldest recognized style, classicism carries with it the approbation of time and taste,” Griffin says. And while it never falls too far off décor’s radar, it’s really enjoying a moment now. “Classicism’s clean, sleek lines are back with a vengeance this summer, both in a refined way and in over-
the-top, tongue-in-cheek style statements,” she says. There are many ways to introduce the style into traditional or contemporary spaces, and at various price points. “Lamps are a great way to bring a neoclassical touch into your décor — classic urn shapes, columns or classical motifs like acanthus leaves look elegant, particularly when paired with a black card or pleated silk Empire lampshade,” Chinn suggests. Stiffel has a wide selection with silver or burnished bronze bases. “Ornate plaster corbels used as brackets for decorative display shelves bring a classical element to a room,” she notes. Look for plaster ones, or unfinished

wood that you can paint or gild yourself. (www.architecturaldepot.com ) AllModern has pairs of bookends with busts of Hercules or David. The Perseus console from Currey & Company is a sleek, silver-leafed iron piece with a Greek key border. (www. allmodern.com ) At Arhaus, scroll and floral wood carvings frame the Clara mirror, while the Adele dining chair, upholstered in velvet, features inlaid antiqued wood rosettes. Restoration Hardware has a group of architectural ornament fragments cast in brass and mounted on museum stands, among them swag and tassel, cornice, and acanthus scroll patterns. Vintage Italian etchings of capital styles would
make nice wall art, and so would an intricate charcoal drawing circa 1900 of classical carved marble portraits. A series of intaglio cameos of neoclassical themes are cast in plaster and framed. The retailer’s also got larger pieces, including wooden columns, pillars and plinths that could be used as display stands for artwork — perhaps for a plaster bust of Ariadne, or a carved finial. Griffin’s not surprised that the Greek key motif is a trend. She likes to use the design in dressmaker-inspired details, such as embroidered tape trim on curtains and upholstery. Or, if you want a bold look, consider going for an all-over pattern.

Ask a designer: No color is too bold for decor By Melissa Rayworth Associated Press It might be practical, of course, to decorate your home with neutral colors and muted earth tones. No need to worry about colors clashing if most everything is white, beige and light brown. But what if you’re a fan of vivid orange, lime green or a luscious shade of lavender? These colors can be tricky to use successfully in decor. But you don’t need to avoid them, says interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the Flynnside Out design blog. Just use them carefully. “It’s a game of balance,” Flynn says. “Once you get that right, just about any color can be spectacular.” Here, Flynn and two other designers — Kyle Schuneman of Live Well Designs and Betsy Burnham of Burnham Design — share advice on decorating successfully with even the most complicated colors. For a client who loved lime green, Schuneman covered one dining room wall with wallpaper that combined bright lime green with a muted sage green. He painted the other three walls in the neutral sage. That way, the client could enjoy a favorite color but the room didn’t feel overwhelming. “There can only be one star in a room,” Schuneman says. “If you want a bold color, then you already have your star.” Burnham agrees: “Orange next to screaming lime green next to fuchsia,” she says, “doesn’t belong in a grownup space.” But fuchsia paired with olive green can look chic. The same approach works for paler colors. Pastel pink used with pastel yellow and

But Flynn has found that a light pastel pink can be gorgeous paired with a dark, calming navy blue. When clients are considering a very bright color, Flynn often advises them to choose one “two shades lighter or less saturated than the one they’re iffy about.” “Nine times out of 10,” he says, “they end up still getting the effect, but without the color becoming too saturated to live with.” No matter what the color, all three designers recommend picking a shade
that’s got some gray mixed in. For a living room done in shades of purple and lavender, Burnham chose a sofa fabric that was a mix of gray and purple, and used a white paint infused with a bit of gray on the walls. Ta x i ca b ye l l ow wa l l s would be awful, says Burnham, but one bright yellow throw or ceramic lamp could satisfy your desire for that shade without overpowering a room. If your heart is set on a tough color and you’re not content with adding just a single accessory, Burnham suggests consulting an expert.

Birdcall playback on phones prompts ethics debate By Dean Fosdick Associated Press
Wildlife watchers can now wield unnatural powers, playing actual birdcalls on smart phones and other mobile devices. The practice, called playback, is effective for attracting elusive species but also can harm nesting birds if overused. “It’s kind of a balancing act,” said Jeffrey Gordon, president of the American Birding Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “If you’re bringing a common bird into view for a group of kids or showing people how habitat is really good for birds, then a case can be made that it’s a good tool for making birds visible. Caution is most war-
ranted when you have a rare species or a species when a lot of people want to see it at the same location.” The prevalence of these small, inexpensive tools is increasing at a rate that concerns many recreational birders, said Michael Webster, a professor and director of Cornell University’s Macaulay Library archive, the repository for more than 200,000 bird call recordings — 150,000 of which people can use online. “The main negative? It can stress the birds, especially if overdone,” Webster said. “On the positive side? These are devices for people to get out there and experience nature. It’s educational engagement.” People should, however,

ing code of ethics, he said. The American Birding Association’s Principles of Birding Ethics includes: “Limit the use of recordings and other methods of attracting birds, and never use such methods in heavily birded areas, or for attracting any species that
is Threatened, Endangered or of Special Concern, or is rare in your local area.” That language soon may be updated, Gordon said. “I don’t know if that will make it more restrictive, though, just more thorough — spelling out a little better that not one size fits all. There are so many birds in so many situations that common sense and courtesy will be a better fit.” Here, then, are some common-sense suggestions for minimizing playback disturbance to birds and other birders, from noted field guide author David Sibley’s website: • Have a plan. Choose your spot and know your quarry, don’t just play sounds. • Play snippets of sound

— less than 30 seconds at a time — with a long pause before the next snippet. After five minutes or so, give it a rest. • Be subtle. You are trying to coax a bird into the open, not stir up a fight (among competing males during mating season). • No surprises. Announce your intention to play a recording and hold the device above your shoulder so other birders can see the source of the sound. “Any potential negative impacts of playback are more likely to occur in areas with a lot of birding pressure, so avoiding playback in those places is a good idea,” Sibley writes. “Where and how to use it in other situations is up to the individual birder.”

Spray paint tips to flawlessly update your home’s furniture Brandpoint
With the warmer weather, now is the ideal time to bring new life to home decor. Whether your outdoor items are looking worn and weathered - or your indoor spaces need a pop of color — spray paint is the perfect solution. To ensure your furniture update goes flawlessly, follow these few tips from the experts at Krylon, the nation’s leader in spray paint.
Prep properly
Surface preparation is extremely important and the best predictor of how long your finish will last. The goal is to make your surface as smooth as possible to ensure the new paint adheres well. Remove any loose rust or paint by lightly sanding. Next, clean surfaces with soap and water or degreaser, if necessary. Rinse and let your surface dry completely. Your surface should now be clean, dull and dry.
To prime or not to prime
Primer prepares bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface for paint. It also seals the surface to help smoothen out blemishes, increase spray paint adhesion and improve corrosion resistance. While priming is a critical step, research shows that consumers only use a primer 50 percent of the time. For the same results with fewer steps, try a combination spray paint with primer.
Choosing the right product
It is important to choose the product that meets the
needs for your substrate — as well as your style. • P l a s t i c / l a m i n a te s — With the popularity of ready-to-assemble furniture made of laminates and storage items made of plastic, these surfaces are prime targets for painting. However, without the right product, your project could turn out less than desirable. “Most consumers don’t realize that not all plastics are the same,” says Denise Patterson, Krylon product manager. “In fact, most spray paints on the market will not adhere to the most popular plastics found in furniture, toys and storage. Krylon’s new Dual Superbond spray paint offers a unique formulation that promises quality adhesion to 85 percent of plastics, as well as hard-to-adhere surfaces, such as melamine and laminates.” • Metal — For metal surfaces — especially those that are exposed to outdoor elements — it is important to choose a product that provides rust protection. “Many products that claim rust protection only work when used with an additional primer,” says Patterson. “Using a combination product, such as Dual Superbond Paint + Primer ensures that all surfaces will achieve superior rust protection without a multi-step process.” • Wood — Choosing the best spray paint for wood is dependent on the finish, use and location of your surface. Exterior projects should always be primed for the greatest durability. A general purpose spray paint, such as Krylon ColorMaster, is an ideal choice for wood. This new product offers the widest color selection with nearly 100 colors and finish-
es, as well as offering a combination paint and primer for a one-step application.
Spraying specifics
Before you spray, shake your can for about two minutes. Next, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and use several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat. Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object using an even side-to-side motion, releasing the tip at the end of each pass. Try to overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass. As you prepare to paint new life into your home deBrandpoint cor, these few tips and tricks will ensure your project is A can of spray paint can transform rusted or white plastic outdoor furniture painless and pretty for years into colorful art. to come. How to choose a patio door to transform your home’s view Brandpoint
It’s the time of year to get outside, dine on the deck, bask in the backyard or relax on the patio. Is your home ready for summer entertaining or is it time for a remodeling or replacement project? If the answer is the latter, now’s the time to get more out of your home by improving access to the great outdoors. You can do this by replacing your patio door. Replacing it can transform your home’s view and comfort year-round. Here’s how you can begin the process.
Select a style hinged or sliding
Hinged — Hinged patio doors, often called French doors, add an elegant look to your home. Choose from popular options like two
architecture. Sliding — If floor space is limited or if your patio door opens to a balcony, consider a sliding patio door, since they take up less floor space. Look for a patio door with the sliding panel on the outside, so that when the wind blows against it, the design creates a tighter, more energy-efficient seal to help keep your home comfortable. To add pops of color, change the wall paint. Adam B. cient fiberglass withstands extreme heat, cold, and moisture. With a long-lasting powder coat finish, fiberglass patio doors like the Pella Impervia line don’t need painting and resist sagging and warping, even in dark colors, even in hot climates.
Decide on decorative options
Optional between-theglass shades or blinds help reduce dust accumulation, eliminating the dreaded chore of cleaning blinds or shades. Blinds or shades between-the-glass are a natural for patio doors, since they don’t interfere with the operation of the door itself, yet make it a breeze to control light and privacy. Plus, shades and blinds without roomside cords are safer options for homes with pets or children.

from Pella made from wood, fiberglass or vinyl frames with double- or triple-pane insulating glass options. Wood — Consider the natural warmth, beauty and energy-efficiency of wood patio doors. They are available in virtually any shape, size, grille pattern, and exterior color. You can save time by choosing factory prefinished wood interiors and trim. Vinyl - For exceptional energy performance, outstanding strength and weather resistance, consider a vinyl patio door. Low-maintenance vinyl sliding doors will look great for years, without the need for painting. Continued from D11 sense of space throughout a home, but this trend is particularly prevalent in bathrooms where space is at a premium. The Ciclo Bath Collection features Krion, a material that is smooth to the touch and endlessly customizable because it can be molded like plastic. With virtually invisible joints, the collection of sinks, mirrors, vanities and shelving makes it simple to integrate clean line design concepts. Warm weather often calls for refreshed color palates within home design, but it’s not necessary to do a complete overhaul to inject the season’s hottest hues. Whether you go for vivid tones like radiant orchid, the Pantone color of the year, or you prefer more subdued gray and blue hues that are currently trending with in-
terior designers, home decor accents make it easy to integrate color for seasonal updates. For example, swapping pillows, throws, paintings and photography takes minimal effort and little investment. A touch of sparkle is an attractive addition to rooms, particularly in unexpected spaces. Light fixtures like crystal chandeliers are no longer reserved only for dining rooms and entranceways - many now grace bedrooms and powder rooms, adding visual drama. In the bathroom, the Swarovski Crystal Elements Collection features dazzling decorative elements that reflect light and can be used to separate surface transitions on walls, showers and backsplashes. Try mixing crystal accents with organic materials like marble or wood for a striking and chic contrast look.
