Crown Imperial can add majesty to a garden By Lee Reich Associated Press Crown imperial is exiting the garden after another fabulous spring show. The orange blossoms are fading, wilting and will soon drop. Then the rest of the plant will begin to dissolve back into the ground. As befits nobility, crown imperial comes and goes as it pleases, often in a fickle or unpredictable manner. Mine was planted over 20 years ago, and for its first halfdozen years refused to show more than just leaves. The flowers were worth the wait. Eventually, a leafy stalk emerged from the center of the ground-level whorl of leaves, the stalk capped with a crown: a tuft of leaves, below which hung a ring of nodding, orange blossoms. A

You might think a lot of coddling was required to bring up this royal family. Given the price of crown imperial bulbs — over $10 each! — nurseries evidently do consider this to be royal treatment. But mostly what I supplied was patience, which has now rewarded me with a regal line of crown imperials in a bed above a rock wall, and another one sharing a bed with redcurrant bushes. Ceiling fans offer energy efficiency, decor and function Brandpoint

Savvy interior designers know that items that are both fashionable and functional are in high demand. One of the best examples of a stylish, hardworking home fixture is also one of the most overlooked: the ceiling fan. In 2014, more homeowners are realizing the potential this classic technology has not only on their comfort levels, but also on their interior’s design aesthetic. It’s no surprise that approximately 82 percent of American single-family homes have at least one ceiling fan to help keep cool in the summer. Invented by the Memphis-based Hunter Fan Company in 1886, ceiling fans are a multi-functional and aesthetically appealing addition to any space. But many homeowners are unaware of how installing a ceiling fan can save money while improving comfort and home design. In addition to customizable fea-

tures and finishes available on ceiling fans today, homeowners who install ceiling fans enjoy: • 45 percent energy savings. An average home uses some form of cooling system heavily for about 125 days out of the year. At eight hours a day for 125 days, central air in these homes costs roughly $207 a year. Using a ceiling fan under the same cooling conditions costs only $111. And, on average, you’ll feel eight degrees cooler using a ceiling fan instead of just AC alone. Many fans now come with LED light kit options as well. To get a better idea of what your energy savings could be, visit www. hunterfan.com/energysavings. • Variety of designs. With a little research, it’s possible to find a design suited for every room and decor, from traditional to industrial to modern. There are companies that offer custom design options, and companies like Casablanca provide the consumer with more than 8 million unique combinations so

Brandpoint

Decorative outdoor fans can add coolness and flair to your patios. they can perfectly match their fan to their interior design style. • Easy install. Most fans are easy to install with a few quick steps or can be installed by an electrician. Some fans even install in as little as

five minutes. • Scalable systems. Fan size matters; the wrong size can have an impact on both your comfort and cooling efficiency. Fans are measured by their diameter, with the

most common size sold being 52 inches. In a small room, a 36-inch fan may be fine, but bedrooms and living rooms sometimes need 54inch or larger models. Got a long room? You may need more than one fan to keep air flowing. • Simple maintenance. With dust-resistant technology, maintaining the performance of ceiling fans has never been easier. Use a soft cloth or brush to clean the blades and motor housing, and remember to remove the light globe to clean by hand. Finally, use a vacuum to remove dust from the vent to keep it running at its best. Innovations like Hunter’s Dust Armor repels the microscopic water droplets that dust particles stick to, reducing dust build up by as much as 58 percent. A lot has changed over the ceiling fan’s 128-year history. To see just how versatile today’s ceiling fans are, visit your local home center, specialty lighting store or www.hunterfan.com.

This photo provided by Best Bath Systems shows a Great Grabz Heritage multistone brown counter with grab bar in a bathroom.

Bathroom grab bars get stylish By Karen Schwartz Associated Press The renovation of the master bathroom in my 83-year-old father’s new house turned out beautifully, with a frameless glass shower and handmade ceramic tile accents. Neither of us wanted to make it look institutional with a grab bar. We needn’t have worried. Many of today’s grab bars are cleverly disguised, looking instead like sleek soap dishes, functional shampoo trays, trendy towel racks and even toilet paper holders. Take for instance the corner shelf from American Standard’s Invisia line. It looks like nothing more than a solid white tray set inside a tubular frame. But that tube, available in brushed stainless or chrome, functions as a grab bar and can support up to 500 pounds. Want fun and funky? Best Bath Systems has a series of acrylic towel bars with hidden mounts that come in more than two dozen colors, some opaque, some translucent, some with embedded stones and some that even glow in the dark. Or for a spa feel, they make a teak grab bar that comes in six different lengths, from 10 inches to 42 inches. Mounting hardware is

available in a choice of five finishes. “We realized there were a lot of people who wanted an attractive option for safety, and who didn’t want to be reminded of their inabilities first thing in the morning and last thing at night,” said Abbie Sladick, 53, of Naples, Florida, a certified contractor and remodeler who created the GreatGrabz line. It was purchased by Best Bath Systems last year for an undisclosed amount. Still, I wondered what having a grab bar in the bathroom might do to the eventual resale value of the house. Turns out, it might just help it. A 2012 survey found that about half of those ages 55 to 64 thought that bathroom aids, such as grab bars and shower seating, were “essential” or “desirable.” That rose to nearly two-thirds among those age 65 and older. Even in the younger age groups, about a third of those surveyed agreed. The National Association of Home Builders’ online survey of more than 3,860 respondents included only those who had purchased a house in the past three years or were planning on doing so in the next three years. In other words, people who were “really thinking” about what they wanted in a

Baths Continued from D7 home, said Stephen Melman, NAHB’s director of economic services. Statistics show that while people 85 and older are the most likely to slip and fall, no age group is immune. Nearly 22 million people over the age of 15 went to the hospital because of a bathroom injury in 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Falls accounted for more than 80 percent of the injuries. Although 85 percent of those taken to a hospital were treated and released, the injuries still resulted in approximately $67.3 billion in lifetime medical costs, the CDC said. Some things to think about when choosing a grab bar:

— Consider the weight of the people who will be using it. Some bars are rated to support up to 250 pounds, the amount required to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Others support up to 500 pounds. — Compare prices and quality. The Invisia sham-

poo shelf retails for about $285 online, depending on the finish, while one made by Moen is available at Home Depot for about $40. — Be aware of how it will be mounted. If you haven’t reinforced the back of your shower or tub with plywood, you’ll likely need a bar with 16-inch offsets, or multiples thereof, to secure it properly. —Many people think of grab bars for the shower and bathtub, but consider putting one near the toilet, too. The 10-inch bars from Best Bath Systems can be mounted to hold a roll of toilet paper. Invisia, meanwhile, makes a more substantial, 13-inch-high arched toilet paper holder. With so many choices, it was easy to find attracPhotos by Associated Press tive options for my father’s bathroom. Tips for high yields in a small or thirsty garden By Jennifer Forker Associated Press How can you get the most yield from a garden where space is limited, and water is too? Plant smart, and pay attention to the soil. “Your garden is only as good as your soil,” says David Salman, chief horticulturist at High Country Gardens, a Santa Fe, N.M., catalog that specializes in native and low-water plants. Find out what nutrients your soil has — and what it’s missing — with a soil test, available through local cooperative extension offices at a nominal fee (home soiltest kits are less reliable, according to the Colorado State University Extension). Photo courtesy of Martha Steward Living Encourage plant health Herbs that grow best in a small or water-wise garden by fertilizing with natural, include basil, oregano, parsley, thyme and rosemary. organic fertilizers, which

include fish emulsion and liquid seaweed, says Salman. Limit the use of chemical fertilizers because they don’t help build the soil. “You will have more nutritionally complete vegetables if you have healthy soil,” he promises. One trick Salmon recommends, especially for gar-

deners living in new housing developments, is adding a soil inoculant called mycorrhiza, a beneficial fungi. It’s found naturally in healthy soil, but often needs to be added to a new garden. “New gardens in new subdivisions, their soil is scraped off as part of construction,” says Salman.

“You need to put beneficial fungi back in.” Peas, beans and soybeans could benefit from legume inoculants, which are species-specific (a soybean inoculant cannot be used to improve peas’ growth). Read See Gardening, D13

Fresh ideas for summer alfresco entertaining Brandpoint

Warm days are calling, as summer traditionally kicks off the outdoor entertaining season. But this year, tradition takes a new direction. More hosts are breaking the boundaries of indoor versus outdoor entertaining. Gone are the paper plates and plastic cups. Instead, people are daring to take their dinnerware outside. “Whether it’s brunch on the patio or dinner on the deck, we’re seeing outdoor dining evolving from impromptu cookouts to more thoughtful, planned gatherings,” says visual merchandiser John Griffith. “Rather than going out for an evening on the town, people are

entertaining at home and they’re enhancing that experience by using their dinnerware outdoors, whether it’s a cozy, casual get together or an elegant, formal alfresco meal.” Griffith and his teammate Julie Robbins develop seasonal design ideas for Replacements, Ltd., known as the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal and silver. “I think many people are a little leery of using what they consider their ‘good dinnerware’ outside, but there are so many ways to dress it up or down depending on the evening,” says Griffith. “For example, you can blend a casual, colorful pattern, like Fiesta, with

a formal white or complementing floral pattern for a festive flair. You can also mix in pieces and mediums that are both attractive and durable; many manufacturers including Pfaltzgraff and Homer Laughlin are offering melamine plates and trays, while Corning has a wide selection of acrylic tumblers.” You can easily incorporate sizzling summer shades by using flowers or fresh seasonal vegetables as centerpieces. Robbins suggests using paper napkins on your table for a casual feel, while you can just as easily add cloth linens to dress up the same place setting for a more formal feel. She adds you can also use beach towels to create festive table runners.

Spring into four simple DIY Gardens home decorating trends

Continued from D10

Brandpoint Whether you’re personalizing a new home or revitalizing an old room, the start of spring is when newly imagined spaces become do-it-yourself realities. Here are four easy and affordable DIY tips to bring 2014’s trends into your home.

Don’t just spring clean ... spring create Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything in the garage. Familiar pieces showcased in a special way can be a conversation starter. Love cycling, but have an old bicycle that you don’t ride anymore? Consider using its components to construct a unique piece of furniture to showcase your passion for the sport. Peter Debelak, co-owner of Soulcraft Woodshop and Gallery, a membershipbased community woodworking workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, did just that. He used Elmer’s ProBond Advanced, a construction adhesive designed specifically for bonding porous to non-porous mixed materials, such as metal to wood or ceramic to drywall, to create a rotating wine rack made out of a bicycle wheel, as well as a shelf and coat rack

Brandpoint

Create a bookshelf from wood and bonding glue. constructed from a repurposed bicycle crank-set and handlebars. “More and more we’re seeing people personalize their home decor by transforming fascinating objects they love into home accessories and furnishings,” says Debelak.

Go ahead, mix materials Vintage and contemporary design elements come together to create rustic contemporary looks. Metal, wood, glass, ceramic - all of these key materials play essential roles in making your home the center of attention. Mixing two, or even all, of these together will give you an edge in creating a unique space. Consider gluing pieces of

metal and wood together to construct an industrialstyle coffee table. Able to work on almost any substrate, ProBond Advanced’s “opposites attract” formula delivers a heavy-duty bond between porous and nonporous surfaces. The glue doesn’t leave a foam residue once it dries, so creating a masterpiece is as easy as glue, clamp and relax.

Give piece(s) a chance Recycled wooden pallets and cable spools are trending now on Pinterest in 2014, as DIYers turn them into coffee tables, desks and wall art. “Homeowners are finding ways to bring an element of surprise to staple pieces.

product labels carefully or ask your gardening center for assistance. “Your beans will do OK (without it), but if you really want to crank out t h e b ea n s, yo u ca n d o that with the inoculant,” says Salman. “It’s kind of a ‘grandma’s secret’ to growing great beans.” Plants that can offer high yields with low watering include leafy vegetables such as kale, lettuce and spinach; beans, snow peas and sugar snap peas; and some varieties of cucumbers and squash, he says. Plant vining beans and peas if you have space or can grow them up a fence or trellis; plant bush beans and peas in large pots if space is limited. Sarah J. Browning, an extension educator for t h e Un ive rs i ty o f Ne braska-Lincoln, suggests planting radishes, carrots, peppers, zucchini and summer squash for summertime bounty. Peppers grow well in dry condit i o n s, says B row n i n g , and root crops such don’t need frequent watering. “If you watered them well and then mulched them, I think you could ge t a c ro p w i t h fa i rly small amounts of water input,” she says.

The Sentinel • D13

P l a n t ra d i s h e s ea rly in the season or in part shade, and mulch them and other plants to retain moisture and combat weeds. Browning recommends the cherry tomato cultivar Sun Gold and the slicers Big Beef and Celebrity as great-tasting high producers. Also look for disease-resistant tomato varieties, which are easier to grow. Browning refers tomato lovers to Pennsylvania State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences Extension’s “Tomato Report 2011,” which lists the best varieties in its tomato trials. Melissa Ozawa, a features editor for gardening at Martha Stewart Living magazine, recommends growing okra and Swiss chard; both are heat- and drought-tolerant. Melons also can handle less water once established because of their deep root systems, she says. Not all vegetables grow well in all regions, so read seed packets, matching days to maturation to your region’s growing season, Salman advises. “One of the big problems with horticulture in this country is everyone tries to be one-size-fitsall, and this is just too big of a continent to do that,”

he says. “You don’t want to grow a 120-day watermelon in Denver. They can grow those in Texas, but the maturation period in Denver is much shorter.” P ro l i f i c, wa te r-w i se herbs include basil, oregano, parsley, thyme and rosemary, says Browning. Salman offers spacesaving planting tips for herbs: Plant lavender and oregano along the dryer edges of your garden, since they’re the most heat-tolerant, and plant Greek oregano and dill, plus annual herbs such as basil and cilantro, among the root vegetables. Try growing perennials such as rosemary, English thyme, tarragon and lavender in your ornamental beds. They don’t require your vegetable garden’s mineral-rich soil, says Salman. Drought-tolerant flower varieties include coneflowers, hummingbird mint, salvia and blanket flowers, according to Ozawa. Other cutting-garden winners are cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers and larkspur, says Salman. His favorite late-season bloomer is the Mexican sunflower. “If there’s a bee or butterfly in a 10-mile radius, they’ll find that Mexican sunflower,” he says.
