Median: Challenge lies beyond the sidewalk By Dean Foskick The Associated Press Making a yard and a community more beautiful begins at the curb. But that narrow space between sidewalk and street — sometimes called a boulevard, median, hellstrip, parkway, verge or tree belt — is a gardening challenge. For starters, it’s probably owned by the municipality but falls to the homeowner to maintain. So the first step in caring for it is to sort out what local rules allow. “You need to go to the city’s website if there are any questions about who owns what,” said Evelyn Hadden, author of the new book “Hellstrip Gardening” (Timber Press). “The zoning laws should be posted online.” “Some cities have regulations where there can only be lawns there. Some say there can’t be vegetables, but allow some kind of lawn alternative,” she said. “Some communities change their rules when people start growing gardens and the community gets behind them.” Curb appeal can increase property values

for the whole neighborhood, Hadden said. “Curbside gardeners are pretty generous that way. They’re working for the benefit of everybody.” Even seedy-looking parcels can become natural welcome mats when integrated with front yards. Curbside spaces are often heavily trafficked, however, making them tough to cultivate. The ground is hard-packed, and plants can be crushed underfoot. Rocks might add character to the landscape but will dent car doors if placed too near the curb. Tall, dense foliage can be a traffic hazard, preventing passing motorists from seeing pets and children. Here are some tips for creating a welltended “hellstrip”: • Talk with neighbors before getting started. “The tension will come when somebody complains,” Hadden said. • Be aware of sight lines, especially at intersections. Drivers may have trouble turning safely if something tall is in the way. • Go with perennials rather than annuals, said Fred Rozumalski, a landscape architect with Barr Engineering Co. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “Then the soil is only worked

once and it’s more secure,” he said. “Dirt won’t run into the street, clogging gutters and storm sewers.” • Avoid growing vegetables at roadside sites because of pollution, Rozumalski said. “They collect elevated levels of road salt, lead from gasoline and copper from brake linings. I certainly wouldn’t want to eat any food that came off a boulevard.” • Tree planting is the city’s job, he said. “I’ve seen people make bad choices, planting trees like sugar maples that are difficult to maintain and push up sidewalks. Shrubs should be kept low, no more than 18 inches in height.” • Be cautious about displaying yard art, Rozumalski said. “You don’t want to distract drivers. Home cleaning tips turn chaos into harmony Brandpoint The stack of shoes that pile up by the front door, the linen closet that you’re afraid to open, the junk drawer that may well hide the mysteries of the universe — we all have one or two spots in our home that cry out for organization and tidying. Spring cleaning season is approaching, and with a plan of attack you can take this opportunity to clear away clutter, organize underutilized spaces and generally improve the overall usability of your home. Procter & Gamble and The Home Depot have teamed up with seven DIY bloggers to offer 14 room-by-room tips for getting organized this spring:

Cutting kitchen chaos

• Nearly everyone has one drawer in their kitchen that becomes the “catch-all spot.” Empty yours, wipe down the inside, and insert a silverware tray to help organize pens, batteries, buttons, random screws and other items that find their way into the drawer. You can find drawer inserts and many other organizational tools at The Home Depot near you. • Every family needs a central spot for

sharing information. But if a cork board, white board or chalkboard isn’t your idea of wall decor, try hiding them away on the inside of a kitchen cabinet. Mount a cork panel on the inside of a cabinet door, or use chalkboard paint to create a hidden and useful spot for notes, shopping lists, coupons and reminders. • You likely sweep the kitchen floor daily, but floors can also benefit from a good steam cleaning at least once a week. Steam cleaners like the Swiffer Bissell Steamboost deeply penetrate dirt and remove messes mops might leave behind. • Organize the cupboard and pantry by using boxes, jars and baskets with labels on them. When it’s time to put an item away, everyone will know where it belongs, rather than be tempted to toss it randomly into a cupboard.

Better bathrooms • Bathroom drawers can easily become cluttered. Place desk organizing trays in drawers so that items like makeup, combs, curling irons, etc. stay neat and orderly. A bit of Velcro keeps trays in place and makes it easy to remove them when it’s time to clean

them out. • The cabinet under the sink can be a scary place. Baskets bring both organization and style to under-sink storage spaces. • Not everything needs to be hidden away. A basket makes a great way to cleverly display toilet paper and still make it easily accessible when needed. Placing grooming supplies in a tiered serving tray brings organization, style and convenience to a bathroom. • Scent is a key concern in bathrooms. Scrubbing the shower, floors, toilet and sink until they sparkle is a good start, but sometimes baths need a scent boost. Try placing scented candles in the bathroom to help neutralize odors and add a fresh, welcoming aura to the room.

Lighten the load in laundry rooms • Even small laundry rooms often have unused space above the washer and dryer where you can install shelving for storage. Head over to your local home improvement store for a variety of shelving to store detergents, stain removers and fabric softeners. • Add a rolling cart or laundry butler to your laundry room. It’s a great way to add

organization and function to the space, helping keep clothes off the floor — plus they’re simple to transport. • Laundry rooms are often overlooked in the decor department, but a fresh coat of paint can really liven up a dingy, utilitarian room. Choose a bold and bright color - the laundry room is about making things clean, so the room should inspire the vividness you want to achieve in your clothes.

Cleaning up closets

• Empty your linen closet and refresh all those stale sheets with a good wash with Tide HE Laundry Detergent, which infuses fabrics with its fresh original scent. The art of tackling your tile project Brandpoint

When you add a tile or natural stone surface to the kitchen or bathroom, it transforms each space with a fresh, clean and customized look. Many homeowners often dream about adding a backsplash or replacing a floor, but never complete the project because they can’t decide on the right look, become mentally exhausted by the thought of doing the project or don’t know how to accomplish it themselves. “There are simple tips designers use to plan the look and feel of a room using tile colors and patterns,” says Kirsty Froelich, design director for The Tile Shop. “Whether you want to do the tiling yourself or plan to hire someone to lay it for you, these hints will help you get the look you want with ease.” Do: Find inspiration to guide your vision — This is the fun part. Get motivated to do your project by looking for photos that catch your eye in magazines or Decorpad, get inspired with hundreds of inspirational spaces from The Tile Shop on Houzz, Instagram, Pinterest or www.tileshop.com, and start a file of your favorites. Visuals of what can be done or what has already worked for someone else are great reference for your project even if you tailor it to fit your own style. Also, try using graph paper to draw out your own geometric designs. As you gather visuals, you’ll most likely notice a similar pattern and/or shape of tile or stone materials that you’re drawn to, which can range from ceramic, porcelain and glass to marble or slate. This will help you narrow down a style of tile to use. One material that is very versatile is Travertine from The Tile Shop. It comes in a neutral color palette, perfect for using on the floor, walls, backsplash, around the fireplace or even outdoors in warmer climates. It is available in stores and for purchase online. Don’t: Go overboard — Too many patterns or colors in one space can overwhelm a room. Instead, keep things clean and simple. Do: Check your colors — Before purchasing all the materials for your project, bring samples home so you can see the colors in the space. “Store lights and the lights in your kitchen are very different, and all of the sudden, what you thought was a beige color in the store might look green in your home,” says Froelich. Also match your tile samples against other colors that will be in the room, from the paint on the walls to the granite countertop to the wooden cupboards and floor. By

If you’re doing the tiling yourself and need a refresher, “Once you have your design, your materials and you have tested your pattern, you’re ready to start the project,” Froelich says. “Roll up your sleeves and get started so you can enjoy your updated look for many years to come.”
