Top 5 trendy bathroom upgrades that will not cost you a bundle Brandpoint No one ever said “trendy” translates to “cheap.” Yet when it comes to on-trend, luxury upgrades, you don’t have to spend like a diva to make your bathroom look and function like a designer’s dream. From skylights to shower seats, some of the hottest bathroom trends of 2014 are surprisingly affordable to accomplish. Home website Houzz polled users and asked what bathroom upgrades they most desired. Many of the answers were both luxurious and affordable (like skylights and double-flush toilets). Others were downright easy, such as towel warmers and foot rests in the shower. Here are five hot bathroom improvement trends and some ideas for incorporating them into your home:
1. Skylights Many Houzz respondents said they would like a skylight in their bathroom. They’re definitely on to something. In rooms where privacy is a concern, skylights can provide both natural light and ventilation without exposing your personal business to the neighbors. They’re both beautiful — endowing bathrooms with a major “wow” factor — and practical; Energy Star— qualified no-leak, solar-powered fresh-air skylights from Velux America can help trim electricity costs by providing natural light and passively venting moist, warm air from the room. Install solar-powered skylights and blinds, and the cost of the products,
as well as the installation, can qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit. And for 10 weeks during the summer there’s also a $200 cash rebate from Velux on solar skylights. You can create a big impact for a small price with a makeover that only takes a couple of days. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more and to locate the closest certified installer.
2. Lighted vanity mirror In keeping with the lighting theme, 41 percent said they would like a lighted vanity mirror. Home improvement stores, design studios and online retailers carry a wide variety of options in shapes, sizes, styles and light sources (LED, CFL or incandescent) to suit virtually every taste. Because installing a lighted vanity mirror is a simple do-it-yourself job, it’s also a very low-cost improvement that has a big impact on a bathroom’s appearance and usability. With such a huge variety, it’s possible to find a mirror that will fit your budget, whether it’s less than $100 or more than $1,000.
3. Double-flush toilet The ongoing trend of making homes greener may have helped inspire the 23 percent of Houzz fans who said they want a doubleflush toilet. Dual-flush toilets allow you to use only the water you need to get the job done — less for liquid waste, more for solids — so they contribute to a home’s overall footprint and can help trim water bills. It’s
possible to find dual-flush options for less than $250, so they’re a lower-cost upgrade to begin with. They’re even more cost-effective when installed by a savvy DIYer.

4. Towel warmers Who doesn’t love the comforting warmth of a towel fresh out of the dryer? Towel warmers deliver that effect without the hassle and expense of running the dryer. Wall-mounted or free-standing, plug-in or hard-wired, all towel warmers work the same way; heated bars warm towels hung on the rack, providing a cozy, warm towel every time you bathe. Plugin versions install easily, while hard-wired ones may require professional installation. Prices can range from less than $100 to more than $600, depending on the style and features you choose.

5. Shower foot rest Clearly, this is one improvement that most benefits the women in a home, but 10 percent of those polled by Houzz said they wanted a foot rest in the shower. This one is such an economical improvement, you may wonder why anyone wouldn’t do it. Some suction-cup styles cost under $20. For a more refined look or enhanced sturdiness, it’s possible to find one that anchors into the wall through screws, or a style built into shower surrounds. If you’re redoing your shower stall, it’s the perfect time to add a stylish, sturdy foot rest.

Prepping tips for spring outdoor projects Brandpoint Winter is over and it is now time for homeowners to start planning — and prepping for — a variety of outdoor projects. From cleaning, repairing or replacing decks, to creating raised beds for veggies and flowers, now is the time to start gearing up for those spring projects.
Cleaning up Start with cleaning existing structures. Take a weekend to clean decks, gazebos and pergolas of dirt, debris, mold and mildew. For structures made of naturally durable Western Red Cedar, a broom, garden sprayer and hose, plus a little bleach are all you need. Sweep debris such as
twigs and leaves from decks, taking care to clean between planks on horizontal surfaces. This facilitates airflow and drainage, and can help prevent a buildup of moisture when spring showers arrive. Use a garden sprayer to apply a mild oxygen bleach solution to kill mold and mildew. Be sure to leave the bleach solution on the wood surface for approximately 30 minutes, and Brandpoint then rinse with water. Never use a pressure washer as Adding flowers to your patio, deck or porch will it can damage the wood. give your entry way a touch of color and personalMaintenance and repair ity. Carefully inspect outdoor structures for wear and tear. While Western Red Cedar contains natural preservatives that make the wood durable, all outdoor structures require annual care,
including those made of pressure-treated lumber or composites. Check planks, beams and boards for cracking, warping or rough spots and repair accordingly. Replace
damaged wood, and be sure to examine hardware to ensure it’s working properly and free of rust.

about lounging on a lovely deck on a summer afternoon, or savoring a spring morning beneath the shade of a decorative pergo la, now’s the time to start planning the project. A great deck is the showpiece of an inspired backyard, and now is a prime time to add one. To ensure your deck affords you the most value and enjoyment, consider using an online deck planner to help you envision your deck before you begin building. As gardening grows in popularity, you might consider adding raised planting beds to your landscaping. Raised beds not only make caring for and harvesting your garden easier — no bending required — they can also function as
a decorative enhancement to your outdoor environment. The material you choose will influence the longevity, beauty and enjoyment of your structure, so carefully consider your options before deciding. The green qualities and d u ra b i l i ty o f We s te r n Red Cedar make it a great choice for virtually any outdoor structure. Whatever project you’re dreaming of — from building a new deck, pergola, or planting beds to refurbishing an existing outdoor structure or palyset — careful planning, cleaning, maintenance and the right materials can ensure your project adds value and beauty to your home environment.

Create nooks and crannies A key in successful furniture placement is to ensure balance. A well-placed room helps create the feel of a larger, more inviting environment. That means making sure corners receive equal attention, whether it be with a plant, an accent chair, or a fun feature. The same rules apply when you plan a layout for your patio or deck. Conceal outdoor tools and toys or create private conversation nooks with unique design elements. An affordable DIY project is to create a privacy screen constructed from materials you may already have laying around your home. By simply cutting one or two standard, old doors in half vertically, painting or staining the wood, adding hinges, hooks and a few metal shelves you can create a decorative privacy screen for the items you’d prefer to stay out of view as well as an organizational element for gardening tools or a barbecue set. It also adds an interesting feature that brings visual appeal to your neglected corner.

Lemon Gem marigold offers unusual foliage, flowers
The Sentinel • D7
519 AdAms RoAd CARlisle
By Lee Reich Associated Press Marigold is among the most widely planted and, hence, mundane of flowers. Yet I enjoy them as an essential part of summer with their yolk-like blooms and pungent foliage. For those who are bored by marigolds, as well as those who love them, let me introduce Lemon Gem and its kin. Lemon Gem is unlike most familiar marigolds. It belongs to a different species, in fact, than the French or African marigolds soon to open their sunny heads in gardens almost everywhere. Those marigolds you grow for their flowers — large, solid-color pompoms in the case of the African marigolds (Tagetes erecta), and smaller, sometimes multicolored single or double flowers in the case of the French marigolds (T. patula).
A gem of a plant Lemon Gem is one variety of the so-called Signet marigolds (T. tenufolia), which you might grow just for their leaves. The plants are dainty, no more than about 8 inches high, with leaves that have a ferny texture and bright green color. Lemon Gem leaves also reputedly have a lemony aroma, although my nose has never picked it up. The ferny leaves are a perfect background for knitting together various parts of a flower bed or mixed border. They would be ideal for a knot garden, the kind of garden that has narrow rows of dense, low-growing plants patterned into a two-dimensional design. Lemon Gem isn’t the only Signet marigold on the block. Look also for Tangerine Gem, Red Gem and others.
Associated Press
The small flowers of Lemon Gem marigold, a different species from common marigolds, stare out like stars from a backdrop of ferny foliage in New Paltz, New York.
Other foliage marigolds
sides being a compact mound of dainty greenery, Lemon Gem does indeed bear flowers. Pretty ones. Each flower is half an inch across, single and lemon yellow. You might think nothing of them from this description, but they pop out profusely through the foliage, each staring out against the verdant backdrop like a star twinkling in the night sky. In my garden, Lemon Gem always stops visitors in their tracks and elicits the question, “What is that plant?” Like other marigolds, Lemon Gem is easy to grow. I sowed seed indoors about a month ago, but you could just plant it outdoors now. Sown directly in the garden, the first blossoms are a bit delayed, but marigolds are precocious, so the plants bloom in just a few weeks anyway. Once blossoming is underway, the show continues into fall. Marigolds are Lemon Gem flowers rarely bothered by pests, inBack to Lemon Gem: Be- cluding deer. Speaking of marigold leaves, let’s look for one moment at two other marigold species notable for leaves. The leaves of Spanish tarragon (T. lucida) have an anise scent and are grown as a substitute for real tarragon where it’s too hot or humid for that plant. Besides its use as flavoring, Spanish tarragon has also been recommended — in a 16th century herbal — for hiccups and for crossing water safely. Irish Lace (T. filifolia) is the other species of foliage marigold, this one with lacy leaves not unlike that of Lemon Gem. Irish Lace has a sweet, anise-y flavor, good for tea, as a flavoring or just for nibbling. (No marigold should be consumed in too great a quantity.) Both Spanish tarragon and Irish lace also bear flowers, but tiny white ones hardly worth mention.

Custom home decor without the hassle, high costs Brandpoint Conventional wis dom holds that in order to achieve a custom look in your home decor you either have to spend a bundle hiring professionals, or invest countless hours of hard work doing it yourself. In the Internet age, however, it’s easier than ever to achieve the look of custom home decor without the expense or hassle of traditional methods. That’s because you can buy virtually anything online these days, from custom wall art to made-toorder slip covers. And while for some items you’ll pay a bit more than you would in the local department store, online resources can provide you with virtually limitless ways to achieve exactly the look you want. Here are a handful of home decor staples that you can customize through online resources: • Wall decor — While family photos are one of the easiest, cheapest ways to customize your wall art, sometimes a room cries out for an eye-catching canvas wrapped print. Home decor stores can yield some acceptable options, but for a bigger selection— and reasonable costs — head over to www.canvasyourway.com. The same folks who pioneered the concept of custom wallpaper murals now offer millions of image options online that you can customize in several different sizes. Perhaps you need a cityscape to add just the right touch of sophistication to a living room and haven’t been able to find it in local stores. Canvas Your Way has hundreds to choose from or you can make a custom canvas print by uploading your own image. With so many options, it’s possible to find

exactly what you’re looking for at a reasonable price — without the worry that you’ll ever see a similar piece in someone else’s home. • Lighting — Drive down any subdivision in the U.S., glance in entryway windows and you’ll likely see the same light fixtures repeated over and over again. Builders standardize home lighting and many homeowners simply never bother to change things. Or, if they do, they head over to the same home improvement store that everyone else uses, so changing a light fixture doesn’t really give them a unique look. A simple online search can yield thousands of options for customizing your home’s lighting design — from chandelier makers that allow you to specify the number, size and color of crystals to pendant lights in myriad colors, shapes and sizes. • Window treatments — Blinds for one room, sheers for another and valances in a third — sure, you can get all those window treatments customized from local businesses, but how much time and money will it cost? Online merchants offer virtually the same level of cus-
tomization for window treatments as you would find in a specialty shop, at competitive prices and with far less hassle than driving to a custom store, or having a sales person come to your home. All you need is a measuring tape and a vision, and you can find custom window treatments online to fit any home decor. • Slip covers — From shabby couches that are still comfy to sturdy dining room chairs that just need a new look, covering existing furniture with custom slip covers is usually much cheaper than reupholstering or replacing furniture altogether. Again, it’s easy to find a host of online merchants that can customize slip covers to your specifications, including the exact size, color, pattern and fabric you desire. Easier than driving around looking at fabric samples, ordering custom slip covers online makes it simple to give much-loved, still useful furniture a whole new look and life. And most reputable online sellers will offer satisfaction guarantees, so you can be confident you’ll be happy with the look of custom slipcovers that you buy online.
Customization doesn’t have to cost a lot of time and money. Some smart online searching can help you create exactly the home decor look you desire.

Home organization starts with the right tools Brandpoint Your closets may be a bastion of neatness and your pantry a model of the philosophy “a place for everything and everything in its place.” Still, no home is truly in order if the people who live in it are disorganized. “ Pe r fe c t ly o rga n i ze d storage throughout your home is a beautiful thing, but it’s all for nothing if your family can’t keep track of their own and each other’s schedules,” says designer and stylist Emily Henderson, a blogger and spokesperson for the Home Collection by Postit Brand, Scotch Brand and Command Brand. “Today, families are constantly busy so it’s important to find organization tactics and tools that work for everyone.” To organize your family, Henderson suggests turning the heart of your home - the kitchen - into its command center. Make your kitchen both the storage and display location for items that help you plan meals, make schedules, remind you of important appointments and bring a smile to your day.

How to trick the eyes with the magic of home improvement Brandpoint
tra White from Dutch Boy, can help reflect natural or artificial light, making the walls seem to disappear and creating a space that looks bigger. Picking the perfect neutral can give the illusion that your walls are receding. This subtle DIY secret keeps eyes focused on the colors and patterns of the furnishings and accessories in the room, rather than on the size of the room itself.
From disappearing acts to mind games and sensory illusions, the art of magic is all about making your audience believe what they are seeing, taking a seemingly impossible task and making it possible. This timeless art can inspire you to perform some magic of your own using simple home improvement tips to fool the eyes and transform small, drab spaces into ones Embracing your that will surely astound and dark side amaze. Conversely, if you have a room that is overwhelmingly large, the opposite principals can be applied to make it look
smaller. Use dark colors, but this time in a flat finish, to minimize the appearance of the room. An alternative way to trick the eye with paint — and add a level of sophistication and luxury to your home — is by using a faux finishing tech-
nique, replicating the appearance of materials such as brushed suede, granite or old world plaster.
A disappearing act Another way to keep costs and clutter down is by making trim and other decor
items vanish. Instead of over-furnishing, accessorize with multi-purpose pieces like a decorative storage chest that can double as a coffee table or a set of nesting tables that can be easily stored when not in use. Place large furniture against the walls to open up the space. Paint pieces like armoires and shelving units the same color as the walls and hang matching draperies to help them blend. The room instantly feels larger. Opt for furniture with open arms and exposed legs to keep your eyes flowing through the room. Introduce glass or glass alternative tables, which are almost invisible. Mirrors are also a great, inexpensive way to open up a space, giving the illusion of depth. But don’t overdo it with accessories — keep it simple and clean.

Housekeeping tips for a fresh approach to spring cleaning Brandpoint After the long and cold winter experienced across the United States, families will be tackling spring cleaning with a passion this year. But for more than 40 million Americans living with allergies and 25 million with asthma, housekeeping comes with extra concerns and respon s i b i l i ti e s. Mo re than half of all homes in the U.S. have at least one person dealing with allergies or asthma, so spring cleaning needs to focus on removing common household allergens and irritants, and avoiding problems that some cleaning supplies could actually create. “A l l e rge n a vo i d a n c e and environmental control are important parts o f a ny a s t h m a a n d a llergy management plan,” say Dr. Beth Corn, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Director of the Division of Immunology Faculty Practice Associates, “that means a patient should try and avoid contact with allergens like dust mite particles and pet dander that can be found in the dust of
Brandpoint
Be aware of allergens and irritants when cleaning. most homes. Exposure to irritants, like strong scents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be found in some common household cleaners should also be avoided by patients with respiratory issues.” If your cleaning routine doesn’t specifically focus on allergen control and removal, you may be only moving dust around, sending allergens and irritating cleaning chemicals into the air that could aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms. To create a “healthy home” this season, consider these simple tips from the asthma and allergy friendly Certification Program, a healthy h o m e i n i t i a t ive o f t h e Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA): • Use a certified vacuum that has a high efficiency filter with tight seams and
seals to prevent particles from leaking out while you vacuum. Also, choose a style that requires minimal exposure during canister emptying or bag changes. • Use moist cloths or special dry dusters designed to trap and lock dust from hard or flat surfaces that rarely get cleaned, such as baseboards, door jambs, air duct vents, ceiling fan blades and window blinds and shades. • Certain cleaning products can contribute to airborne irritants, especially if they contain harsh chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or have strong odors. Also avoid “green” products with natural allergenic ingredients, such as lemon, coconut or tea-tree oils. • Place certified allergen barrier covers on your mattresses and pillows.
Wash your bedding at least once a week in 130 degree hot water to kill dust mites and their eggs. • Mold, a common allergy trigger, can grow anywhere in your home where moisture is present. Look for cleaning products that help kill and prevent mold from returning. Also, keep your household humidity below 50 percent and fix leaky pipes and cracks to reduce standing puddles of moisture where mold can prosper. • If you are unable to remove carpets and heavy rugs from your home, have a certified professional steam cleaning service care for them three to four times a year. The asthma and allergy friendly Certification Program has recently adopted a new
standard for Professional Carpet Steam Cleaning Services. • If children live in your home, look for certified plush toys. Dust mites, mold and pet dander can accumulate on plush toys over time. Certified toys can be machine-washed and dried, or placed in the freezer for 24 hours then rinsed in cold water to remove dead mites. Dry completely. Do this monthly. • Lots of air passes throug h w i n d ow a rea s and airborne dust and allergens accumulate on all types of window treatments - which are rarely cleaned. In the family room and throughout the home, replace big, heavy linen drapes with more sensible window treat-
ments such as wood blinds or flat screens that are easy to wipe and keep clean. • If your home uses central air conditioning or heat, replace the filter in the machine regularly, typically every 30 to 90 days. Choose an HVAC filter that has been certified to effectively capture fine airborne particles like pollen, dust and dander. AAFA’s asthma & allergy friendly certification program helps consumers evaluate and verify the allergen-reducing effectiveness of a variety of products, from cleaning supplies, air cleaning devices and vacuums to toys, bedding, home improvement products, paints, clothes washers and more.
