Spring is here! Clear skies and sunshine have made their long-awaited appearance and the once-frozen grounds are sprouting fresh flowers and greenery. These decorating tips can help you turn a ho-hum house into a happy home ready to celebrate the new season.

ing happens as spring takes hold. Flowering trees start to bud and before you know it, the world around you is awakening. Take cues from the environment and rebuild your own scenery at home, paying special attention to the details that surround you. Much like trees set the stage outdoors, the walls of your home define the space and demand your attention. Adding a fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive and easy way to revive a room. Pratt & Lambert offers springinspired colors. With names like Petal Bloom, Lilac Time and Breath of Spring, everything will be coming up roses. Dress up an accent wall in the guest bedroom with Cayenne Pepper or Pratt &

Lambert’s color of the year, Sunspot. These bold hues will warm up the space for overnight visitors. Keep rooms bright and airy by drawing back curtains and opening windows to create soft natural lighting and a cross-breeze that’ll relax and revitalize.

Things are looking up Once the decorative foundation for your home has been set, it’s time to work your way up. Blue skies are the key to a beautiful spring day. Don’t forget to apply the same principle to your home by paying special attention to the ceiling. From overhead lighting that keeps things sunny and cheery to ceiling fans that help disperse gentle breezes throughout your home,

these small details add subtle comfort to any space. Replace dusty lampshades with over-sized drum lights or industrial cage lights. Ceiling fan blades can be enhanced with floral stencils or a new stain. You can also paint the ceiling to draw the eyes up even more. Don’t feel obligated to stick to white though. Add a burst of color to the ceiling for a quick way to add visual intrigue and height to the space. This spring, why not reflect nature’s beauty inside your home? Recreate the magic of the season with a few of these easy home decorating tips. When rainy days and afternoon showers have you heading inside, you’ll be glad you did.

Flea-market shoppers can get decor of all kinds By Melissa Rayworth Associated Press

The arrival of spring means that flea markets are reopening for business around the country. Shoppers will hunt for treasures amid acres of used goods. A few will come home with just the right vintage art or quirky piece of furniture to make their home more beautiful. Jaime Rummerfield, cofounder of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design in Los Angeles, sometimes mixes flea-market finds with high-end new furnishings to decorate the homes of her celebrity clients. “The beauty of flea mar-

kets,” she says, “is you never know what you will find. There’s nothing like being outdoors or in a place off the beaten path rummaging through old treasures.” Los Angeles-based interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the FlynnsideOut design blog, also hunts for vintage pieces: “I shop second-hand regardless of my project’s budget or client’s level of taste,” he says. “Vintage and thrift is the best way to add one-ofa-kind flair to a space without insanely high cost.” There is luck involved, of course. But skill also plays a role. As you browse crowded tables of used things this

spring, how can you find the treasures that will give your home an infusion of style while avoiding decorating disasters? Here, Flynn, Rummerfield and another interior designer who shops for vintage decor — Lee Kleinhelter of the Atlanta-based design firm and retail store Pieces — tell how they do it.

When to go Winter and early spring are perfect for flea-market shopping, says Flynn. “Since ‘thrifting’ and ‘antiquing’ are often associated with gorgeous weather and See Flea market, D15

Help control garden pests naturally By Dean Fosdick Associated Press

Gardeners worried about the safety of synthetic pestcontrol products sometimes turn to botanically derived compounds instead. But many of those also contain toxic ingredients, such as nicotine, rotenone and pyrethrins. “Botanically derived pesticides are not always safe and some are more hazardous than synthetics,” said Linda Chalker-Scott, an extension horticulturist at Washington State University’s Puyallup Research Center. “Any improperly used pesticide will contaminate nearby terrestrial and aquatic systems.” And don’t use home remedies, she said, which could be “illegal and possibly fatal

to many good things in your garden.” Instead, consider the benign-neglect school of pestcontrol — a mix of prevention (such as maintaining healthy soil) and natural controls (such as insect-eating insects). “I don’t add fertilizers. I don’t use pesticides. I use a wood chip mulch, which provides habitat for beneficial insects like predacious ground beetles that may eat slugs and slug eggs,” Chalker-Scott said in an email. Ninety-nine percent of the insects in our yards are benign or even beneficial, writes Jessica Walliser in her new “Attracting Beneficial Bugs to Your Garden: A Natural Approach to Pest Control” (Timber Press). She recommends introduc-

insects around, however, you have to offer a diverse and pesticide-free garden with plenty of plant-based foods. “Just like people, most species of beneficial insects need a balance of carbohydrates (found in nectar) and protein (found in their prey) in order to survive,” Walliser said. Provide plants that pro-

duce flowers with shallow, exposed nectaries, she said. “Many beneficial insects are very small and don’t have specialized mouthparts for accessing nectar from tubular flowers. Members of the carrot family and the aster family are great places to start.” Where to find beneficial insects? Aside from luring wild singles into your yard with the necessary food, water and shelter, you can simply buy several hundred for release from containers at garden centers or on the Internet. “Be sure you have everything they need to survive, then look at the types of pests you have in the garden,” Walliser said. “If whiteflies are problematic on your tomatoes, then larval

lacewings may be your answer. If aphids are plaguing your lettuce crop, ladybugs may be a better choice.” Prevention, though, is the best way to keep problem insects away, said Christy Wilhelmi, a garden designer from Los Angeles and author of “Gardening for Geeks” (Adams Media, 2013). “If you have healthy soils, you won’t have as many pests and you won’t need to use pesticides,” she said. “Avoid (plant) stresses. Have soil with a lot of organic matter in it. Create clean curb appeal for your home’s entry Brandpoint

Whether you are building a new home, or want to refresh your existing home, choosing a contemporary style creates high-class curb appeal. But, what goes into contemporary home styling? Among the various ways architects and interior designers describe “contemporary,” two words come up again and again: “simple” and “sophisticated.” For example, interior dec-

orator Coral Nafie describes it as, “fundamentally, simplicity, subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines help to define contemporary style decorating. Interiors showcase space rather than things. By focusing on color, space, and shape, contemporary interiors are sleek and fresh.” “Less is more: smooth profiles instead of ornamentation,” adds decorator Lisa Frederick. As seen from the outside, the National Association

of Realtors notes contemporary homes feature these design elements: • Irregular, asymmetrical façade. • S t ro n g , ge o m e t r i c shapes. • Distinctive roofline — sometimes flat, other times gabled — usually with a wide eave overhang. • Natural, often local, building materials. Your home might be a crisp marvel of modern architecture, a midcentury rambler or some other style.

A simple way to create contemporary curb appeal is with a sophisticated front entry. In any case, a simple way to create contemporary curb appeal is with a sophisticated front entry, starting at the door. “Traditional front doors,

10 reasons you should love your lawn Brandpoint

As summer approaches and your thoughts turn to home improvement and the outdoors, you’re probably considering a variety of ways to make your home more comfortable, more attractive and more environmentally sustainable — while hopefully increasing its value as well. One feature that can achieve all these goals is a healthy lawn. Perhaps surprisingly, installing and maintaining a natural turf lawn is one of the best home improvement investments a homeowner can make. If you’re weighing your options and wondering whether a lawn is worth the effort, consider the following 10 benefits. 1. Outdoor recreation: An

inviting, low-maintenance outdoor space can provide a significant boost to your quality of life. From picnics and games to lounging in the shade with a drink and a good book, a lawn offers the perfect setting for outdoor entertainment and relaxation. 2. Increased home value: Grass makes a home more appealing. A well-maintained lawn is recognized as such a desirable feature to potential homebuyers that it can boost a home’s value by as much as 15 percent, according to a Gallup survey. 3. Excellent return on investment: When it comes time to sell your home, good landscaping can give you a much higher return on your investment than many other home improvement proj-

ects. According to a Gallup survey, you can generally expect to recover 40 to 70 percent of the cost of building a deck or patio, while landscaping can offer a 100 to 200 percent return. 4. Stress relief: Grass areas are naturally calming and stress relieving, and the visual appeal contributes to improved mental health and better quality of life. The healing power of nature can work its magic even in your own backyard. 5. Urban benefits: In cities, grass absorbs noise and provides a beneficial link with nature. Studies have shown that well-maintained lawns also promote greater community pride and deter littering and vandalism. From picnics and games for kids to lounging in the shade with a drink and a good book, a lawn offers the perfect setting for outdoor entertainment and See Lawn, D14 relaxation.

Entry Continued from D11 homeowners, particularly those on the upper end, look for entry doors that are much more clean and crisp. C o n te m p o ra r y d o o r styles have straight lines, flat panels and simple geometric shapes like squares, diamonds and rectangles.” In keeping with the contemporary theme of using natural materials, wood and glass are popular in entry doors. You can select from dozens of readily available wood species and some manufacturers will make a door out of any species you choose. Glass options range from simple, clear glass, to textures that balance light and privacy. With the thousands of

Saturday, April 12, 2014

Lawn permutations and combinations available in contemporary door designs, it can be difficult knowing where to start. Easy-touse online tools provide a way to quickly compare options and to personalize your door to your unique tastes. For example, Simpson’s website features “DOORmagination” tools that include a “Test Drive Your Door” tool that lets you upload a photo of your home and see how various doors will look on it. Such tools provide a fast way to compare dozens of options. Other design tools include a wood species selector allowing you to see doors in more than 20 wood types, and a “Glass Taste Test” to see how much privacy different glass textures provide

for your home. To complete the look of your contemporary door, it is important to consider hardware. On today’s front doors, the hardware is usually understated — simple handle and locksets in satin metal finishes are popular — no lion’s head door knockers. Your local door dealer or hardware store can show you dozens of options. As a final inspiration, remember that simple does not need to mean boring or cold. As Lisa Frederick sums up contemporary styling, “While it doesn’t have the overt warmth of older design styles, it won’t cast a chill either.” Architect John Hill’s take is, “contemporary architecture is of its time, therefore innovative and forward-looking.”

Continued from D13 6. Cooling: On hot days, grass is much cooler than cement, asphalt and dirt, which trap heat. And grass doesn’t just stay cool to the touch — it cools the atmosphere as well. Each blade acts as an evaporative cooler, and by transpiring water to cool itself, grass also cools the environment, reducing the energy requirements for air-conditioning in buildings surrounded by lawns. According to the academic professionals with Grass Seed USA, the front lawns of eight average-size homes have the same cooling effect as the air-conditioning systems of about 20 homes. 7. Conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen: Trees may be the first thing that comes to mind when you

think of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but all plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. According to the academic professionals with Grass Seed USA, a lawn of just 50 square feet releases enough oxygen to meet the needs of a family of four. 8. Natural weed control: If you want a relatively lowmaintenance landscaping option for an area of bare ground, try grass. A healthy lawn discourages the growth of weeds, and grass will easily outcompete other plants when you create the conditions that favor it. 9. Erosion prevention: Grass is one of the most efficient and inexpensive ways to prevent erosion caused by wind and water. A thick lawn absorbs rainfall, virtually eliminating any runoff, and the extensive root sys-

tems of the individual grass plants bind the soil more effectively than many other ground covers. 10. Self-repair: A lawn is naturally self-repairing. If you choose the right grass for your climate conditions and lawn use patterns, it will be highly resilient and regenerate quickly in response to stresses such as drought, frost or foot traffic. “There are many reasons to love your lawn,” says Bryan Ostlund, executive director of Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and turf specialists. “Whether you want a safe place for the kids to play or a welcoming outdoor space for a barbecue, grass fits the bill. It’s a remarkably easy and budget-friendly way to add aesthetic, recreational and economic value to your home.”

Flea market Continued from D7 weekend shenanigans, many people shy away from hunting for their vintage finds when it’s cold or gloomy,” he notes, so go now and go early. “I usually show up just as the flea market opens to ensure I see every new item as it’s put out on display,” he says. “When you wait until the end of a flea market’s run to check out its stuff, you’re likely to find mostly leftovers, things priced too highly which others passed over, or things that are just way too taste-specific for most people to make offers on.”

Time travel

Rummerfield occasionally finds signed artwork and ceramics by noteworthy artists at flea markets and

antique malls. “It is amazing to see what people cast away,” she says. “I personally hunt for Sasha Brastoff ceramics because of his unique California heritage as a set decorator and artist.” She has also found vintage Billy Haines chairs and Gio Ponti lighting at flea markets. So read up on the designers and artists from your favorite periods, and then hunt for their work or impressive knockoffs. A single flea market might offer goods from every decade of the 20th century. Can you put a lamp from the 1970s on a table from 1950? Yes, if the shapes and colors work well together, Kleinhelter says. If your home has contemporary decor, Rummerfield says it can be powerful to add one statement piece — a

Beautiful&Durable

side table, say, or a light fixture — from a previous era. But “a little bit goes a long way. Use vintage in moderation with contemporary spaces,” Rummerfield says. “It will highlight the uniqueness of the vintage item. You don’t necessarily want to live in a time capsule.”

Fixer-uppers You may assume that old upholstered furniture should be avoided, especially if the fabric looks dirty or damaged. But these designers say it’s actually a great thing to hunt for: “Hands down, upholstery is the best deal to walk away with at flea markets. Just make sure you train your eye to pay no attention to the existing fabrics,” Flynn says. “Zero in on the lines of the frames instead.” Kleinhelter agrees: “I usually gravitate toward the

bones and frames of vintage pieces, and I make them my own by adding fun fabric or lacquering the base.” The same goes for lighting. Buy it if you love it, but get the wiring updated by a professional. Flynn usually estimates an extra $50 to $75 per fixture for updating the wiring, so keep that cost in mind as you bargain.

Mix and match Be on the lookout for pieces you can use together. “You don’t need multiples of the same chair or sofa to make a room work,” Flynn says. “Stick with those which have similar scale and proportion, then recover them in the same fabric.” Once you get home, use flea market finds sparingly, Flynn says, mixing them in with the pieces you already own: “A few big piec-

Money advice “The best way to get an amazing deal is to buy a bunch of different items from the same vendor,” says Flynn. “This way, they can actually lower their prices since you’re guaranteeing them more sales, which in turn also makes their packing up and leaving much easier.” You should bargain, but don’t go so low that you’ll insult the seller. “If something is marked $185, it’s probably not ideal to offer $50,” Flynn says. One option is to negotiate for a 25 percent to 35 percent discount. And do bring cash. “Mom

and pop dealers don’t have the luxury of taking credit cards due to the charges acquired,” Flynn says. “If you bring enough cash with you, you’re more likely to be able to negotiate successfully.”

Personal taste

Above all, choose items that delight you. “I never focus on eras or hunt for specific designers,” Kleinhelter says. “Pick what you like.” And be open to serendipity. “When I’m looking for furniture, I always stumble across a good vintage jewelry or clothing vendor and end up with a fun bauble of a bracelet or necklace,” Rummerfield says. “Prices are usually so reasonable, you come away with a good amount of loot. It is always a day well spent.”
