prepares to pass on the crown By Debbie Chestnut The Sentinel Rebecca Shotto has represented her community as the 2013 Shippensburg Fair queen for the past year, and the experience has created memories that will last a lifetime. “I have a fair family now, made up of all the volunteers here, and I absolutely love them,” said Shotto. “You create a sisterhood with the other fair queens that you meet at the state pageant — and I learned a lot of interesting things, like how to milk a goat. I learned a lot about Pennsylvania agriculture that I didn’t know.” Shotto, 19, has had many duties since being crowned fair queen. She handed out ribbons to contest winners, conducted a news cast for abc27, and introduced entertainers at last year’s fair. “Outside of the fair, I went to the Dickens Day Breakfast with Santa and a lot of parades,” she said. “It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.” She also helped with the Corn Festival and participated in the Pennsylvania state fair queen pageant in January at Hershey. She said the experience has been valuable, and she encourages other girls to
consider being in the pageant. “The pageant helps you build poise and learn life skills,” she said. “It teaches you about being responsible and growing up.” Shotto’s advice to future contestants is simple. “I know it sounds really cliché, but be yourself and have fun,” she said. “The reason I entered the pageant was because I wanted to make memories and have fun. I wasn’t looking to win. It totally surprised me.” Reflecting on last year’s pageant, she said she just took her time to answer questions and then gave an honest answer. “I wasn’t really nervous,” Shotto said. “When they asked the questions, I took a deep breath, thought a moment about what I wanted to say, and then responded. I think the most important part is speaking from your heart and not sounding like a robot with a rehearsed answer.” The daughter of Robert and Susan Shotto, of Shippensburg, she is a 2013 graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School. She is now studying biology at Penn State Mont Alto. Her career plans are to become a pharmacist.
