Shippensburg to host 33rd Corn Festival SHIPPENSBUG — Handmade crafts, craft demonstrations, food, family friendly entertainment, antique cars and a corneating contest highlight Shippensburg’s 33rd annual Corn Festival from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine, along King Street in downtown Shippensburg. Contestants may register for the corn-eating contest

until the start of the event at 11:30 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day at multiple venues. Groups will include the Midlife Cowboys, the Shippensburg German Band, and Nancy and Jody. Admission to the festival is free. Parking is available

for $3 at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds with free shuttles to King Street. Pets, bicycles and scooters are not permitted. The Corn Festival is an entirely volunteer-run event that has donated more than $300,000 to local causes in the past three decades. The event was started by a group of local residents

who formed the Shippensburg Heritage and Recreation Planning Society. Concerned with the destruction of many of the community’s oldest buildings, they used proceeds from the festival to underwrite a survey and pay for a historic district application for the National Register of Historic Places. Corn was chosen as the theme be-

cause it is the area’s biggest crop. Donations have supported historic marker signs; a sidewalk, fence and lighting at the entrance to the municipal parking lot; downtown period lighting; restoration and landscaping of the gazebo; iron wreath Christmas decorations; trees and flowers for the downtown area; roof replacement

of the oldest church in town; preservation of Dykeman’s Spring Hatch House; restoration at God’s Acre Cemetery, one the oldest burial grounds in the region; and the committee donates funds to many local organizations. The event is rated as the best one-day festival in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Festivals Association.

Company). The corn eating contest, being held for the third year, is one of the most popular events at the festival. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the

main stage. Gates said eight contestants competed last year. The winner ate nine ears of corn in three minutes. “They are allowed to hold it,

but they can’t leave any kernels,” said Gates. “All the kernels have to be gone. “A lot of people gather around and cheer them on. The MidLife Cowboys play

appropriate music and sing stuff to fire the guys and girls on to make them chew faster.” She recalled a woman who finished second last year who promised to return this year

and win. The prize, a wooden plaque featuring a mounted ear of corn, was designed by Bill Hynes, a retired Shippensburg University art professor.

Festival Continued from C9 in the parking lot of the Shippensburg First Church of God, 121 E. King St. (next to the former Vigilant Hose Fire
