Hiking opportunities in the Cumberland Valley The Cumberland Valley region is home to more than 200 miles of trails, including the midway point of the Appalachian Trail. There are more than 54,000 acres of outdoor opportunities, including three state parks and two state forests. The area also offers scenic areas, including Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch, where more than 20,000 migrating raptors fly over each year. Here are some of the trailers were you can take a hike.
The Appalachian Trail No list of trails is complete without mention of the Appalachian Trail. Forty-three miles of the 2,178-mile trail stretch through Cumberland County. Trail entrances to the Appalachian Trail are Arendtsville-Shippensburg Road, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Sheet Iron Roof Road, Whiskey Springs Road, Leidigh Road, ATC Mid-Atlantic Regional Office in Boiling Springs, York Road (Pa. Route 74), Lisburn Road, Trindle Road (Pa. Route 641), Bernheisel Bridge Road and Sherwood Drive. The trail is open for foot travel only; vehicles, bikes and horses are not permitted. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s Mid-Atlantic Regional office is located at 4 E. First St., Boiling Springs. The Appalachian Trail Museum is located at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Tuscarora State Forest The forest is located at 4455 Big Spring Road, Blain, and also has hiking trails available. Its forest covers areas of Cumberland, Perry, Franklin, Huntindgon, Juniata and Mifflin Counties.
Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch The nature preserve is located off of Waggoner’s Gap Road/Route 74 in Carlisle. Seasonal access is Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, and along with its birdwatching opportunities, there is also a hiking trail to the viewing area.
