Sanistra Demonica

The VieWs of a Death Rocker 7

Death Rocker, where Punk met Metal, a dash of Goth was added. Wild hair styles, dark make up and the transformation is what we have here and now, and who better to pose for us than Lady Sanistra, issue six’s Death Rocker Goth. As always we went ahead and asked a few questions about who and what these elegant and extraordinary people do and represent. Below you’ll find a few questions from Lady S. Please give us a brief introduction of who you are? I'm Sanistra Demonica; I'm an Alternative Goth Model. Been in the industry for 5 years. Also model for Soft Bondage shoots and been promoting bands internationally. What are you currently working on? I'm not working on any project for now, but there are a couple of projects in line for me to do. What is your biggest accomplishment so far? My biggest accomplishment I have reached were to appear in the Coffee Table Book of "Goth Girls, Vampire Vixens and Satan's Sirens" by Corvis Nocturnum with Old Nick Magazine.

Always been a fan of Betty Page and Dita von Teese. Such gorgeous icons and role models!

With everything there is good and bad. What was your biggest lesson learnt in this industry?

Do you wish to be a runway model someday? If not please tell us what type of modelling you want to do.

One crucial lesson I've learned is to make sure the photographer you are using to take your photos is legit and professional!

I've never really thought about being a runway model per say but I would not necessarily push that chance aside. But my passion lies in still photography.

What or who inspired you to become a model?

8

Has modelling been a childhood dream for you or did the opportunity arise itself? I made the decision myself to get in the industry as an Alternative Model. Explain to us your feel of modelling is it all about stilettos or combat boots? Black or colourful? A little bit of everything? It’s a little bit of everything, to be able to express yourself in various forms and to experiment in fashion is a great escape to put yourself out there and to be an artist.

Dark Gothic Elegance expression, their natural self, this is what we aim to capture and expose. Each model will create themselves through their characteristics, that spark that makes them unique.

As you may have noticed, each month we introduce one of the other SAGS tagged endeavours we have that is currently running or in preparation of opening up. This issue’s introduction belongs to Dark Gothic Elegance, the Gothic modelling agency and others, which is also under management of Gauteng House of Goth which will also be introduced shortly.

Like the SAGS goals and rules states, we at DGE will abide and work according to these goals, constantly expanding and broadening our horizons. Bringing Goth to all Goths will be our creed, always searching for more models and more photographers. In doing so we can always offer new, darker and a more diverse sense of Goth...

Dark Gothic Elegance is the next step in Gothic unity set up by the South African Gothic Society, modelling, fashion and Beauty being key aspects of any Gothic sub culture, has led the SAGS to invest, market and make this dream come true of a Gothic modelling agency, with Gothic origins and with a Gothic nature.

If it flies the SAGS Acronym and flag it follows both the rules and goals set by the SAGS itself.

DGE will have full support from the SAGS, from The Society Magazine, from Exquisite Curiosities and every House of Goth including all rising future SAGS endeavours.

We are a modelling agency dedicated to the Gothic look bringing back what it means to look Goth in all aspects of beauty and fashion, reminding the masses of the ways of Gothdom. Selfexpression will be encouraged and constantly sought out, promoting each and every pose and looknaturally capturing the beauty and authenticity of it. Each of our models will add their own diverse and unique talents and traits to the family that is the SAGS. Inked, pierced and modified, we will welcome and make use of all of their awe. Their self-

As stated above, all endeavours support one another, lending a hand to ensure success and full saturation of our goals and missions. The following serve as an invitation to any model, or person wanting to be a model, to make up artists and photographers.

16

Greetings to you, it’s been rumoured for a while now that the SAGS was busy with a new venture, more specifically in the area of Fashion and Beauty, and as the name suggests here it is.

shoots, there’s more to modelling than that, and we aim to bring that back, and we want your help in doing that. Below are photos from DGE’s first official photoshoot with partnership from Gauteng House of Goth and the SAGS.

As we discuss with our new partners, yes we are of gothic natures and from gothic origins, but we are not nor do we limit ourselves to that. Gothdom in itself has grown massively diverse and with it comes much freedom to explore and expand, and much of what we do is done by the entire alt scene, all are welcome. This letter invites you, if you are interested to join DGE in becoming a model or photographer for them. To begin with, it will be one organization catering for all of SA, but as it grows and expands, it can and will be split into multiple branches to uniquely cater for the respected areas, also offering partnerships, director-status and co-owner possibilities. This will be a slow work in progress because it will be done right and accordingly, for example we will not focus on undressing the models and labelling it tattooed

18 THINGS TATTOOED SENIORS WANT YOU TO KNOW By Xavier on May 28, 2015

Photo by Alan Powdrill Know how all these articles about tattooed old folks would go, “Tattooed Seniors Respond to What Will Your Tattoos Look Like When You’re Old” and it’s going to be the same pictures of Isobel Varley (rest easy, dear lady) and Miles Better (who?) looking rad as always but the actual seniors didn’t actually get a say. Well, basically we’re doing the same thing. You can still see Miles and Isobel in here but we’ve rounded up a few seniors and asked them what’s with all this growing old thing and the sagging, etc.

Miljenko Parserisas Bukovic There you have it. Yes, we do have some regrets. Maybe a shitty pin-up that looks nothing like Bardot or a koi fish that might make a Japanese slap me for such disgrace. But you know what? We love all that ink. No way we’re regretting something we commit to. Besides, it isn’t bad as raising a child who would one day grow up to be such ignorant little shits. 2. We are pretty much aware of wrinkles, thank you.

1. Yes, we have our share of regrets.

Of course, wrinkles! Who the fuck are we, Hellen f*cking Mirren, who never seems to age? Do you really think we were into some kind of drugs that make us forget we won’t forever be twenty one when we were getting our tattoos done? We’re not only aware of wrinkles; we embrace them. It’s coming for us all, anyway. And at the very least, we have something to cover up

37

those nasty things instead of letting them hang around. 3. No, we’re not worried for our kids.

What makes you think they’ll be ashamed of their old geezer? 5. We’re still not worried for our grandkids.

If there’s something we’re glad we taught our kids it’s that if you’re going to get tattooed drunk anyway, don’t ask us for laser job money. And oh, just because we busted your ass for coming home with that nasty tattoo at seventeen when we obviously told you to wait ’til you’re eighteen doesn’t give you the right to send us to a damn nursing home in a couple years. Ain’t no one’s going to no home for the old’n lame-ass. And before we continue this, someone has to remind me what in the world we were talking about again.

Many people might wonder if we’ll raise our kids, and the kids of our kids our way. If we’ll let them get tattoos and whatnot. Well, guess what. Isn’t that up to them? I mean, as long as they’re sober. Or at least, go to a tattoo artist who doesn’t look as if he got his license from his cousin’s basement. 6. No, we weren’t a part of the cult of Charles f*cking Manson.

4. And we’re not worried for our grandkids.

38

Oh sure, we still look like any old people everywhere. We have the usual liver spots, the ugly hair and the saggy everything. But we have our body art for people to look at apart from our lines and marks.

Tattooed folks like us who were around the time those crazy bollocks were happening, people tend to link the ‘bad boys’ and ‘bad girls’ with Skinheads, cults and biker gangs. It’s like saying everyone from the 60’s were hippies and everyone from the 80’s worshipped Madonna. You clowns can’t be serious.

9. We agree, these people have to stop.

7. Yes, some of us get new ones done (as long as there’s still space).

Need we say more? 10. No, we didn’t raise our kids from crack money.

Not all of us always had tattoos. Some really just waited for retirement or some shit that got in the way of us getting a tattoo. Might start out a little late but you know what they say, the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now. 8. We still look sexy as fuck, naked.

39

Age-old misconception. People should drop this already. Okay, there was this one time… [Kidding, I hope.] 11. It’s true about what they say with love and tattoos.

Well, of course. We could all use some extra space, you know. There was no Tim Hendricks, no Jeff Gogue back in the day! 14. Ain’t embarrassed about these tattoos, nor are we going to a damn nursing home any time soon.

If he’s man enough for a tattoo, he better be man enough for marriage. If he can commit to tattoos, better be committed to one woman. It was a time when you can’t just get shit lasered, that’s if you want to lay down several quids and put yourself through something that’s gonna hurt more than all those needles combined. That’s divorce, pretty much. 12. Yeah, we tire of them sometimes.

Rest in Power: Isobel Varley! Alright, chap. There may come a time when we will definitely need the help of someone to wipe our ass and to change our knickers. And maybe a quite cheeky crotch tattoo is something to get redfaced about but hey, had some good laugh about it in my prime; why not let it sit until I’m worm food?

Like old toys, we’re bound to lose excitement of some pieces over the years. It’s like having the same meal at the same restaurant for the past two decades. It’s not that you start hating it completely, but perhaps giving it a retouch will ignite that fire the old thing needs.

15. We look so damn fine.

13. We also want some of them gone.

40

Don’t lecture us what you know about traditional and new school shit. 17. The discrimination is still very real.

Nick Wooster FORGET THE SAGS, ALRIGHT. Tattoos still look much more interesting paired with an innocent-looking pair of granddad khakis and cotton shirts. You’ll see us walking down the streets and you’ll wonder, ‘Was he in a gang? Was he a biker? Did he ever steal a car? Was he in a band? Did he kill someone from another state?’ You’ll never know.

One of the seniors I talked to shared an interesting story, “Once worked as one of those dopey chaps wearing a fat suit and beard for a month. I was bloody St. Nick! But I guess I must’ve slipped off the gloves but it’s this little girl and the little boys to have their photos taken with Mr. Christmas but the second the mother saw my knuckles, just screamed and took away her kids. Kept mouthing off about AIDS. Geez.”

16. We were a bunch of stupid kids, too.

18. Yes, we love the look on your faces when you see us walk by.

We know what it’s like to be barely out of our teens and being reckless and adventurous and everything you kids are now. We’ve been told the same things. We’ve heard the same shitty opinions.

‘Please don’t kill us.’

same meaning, so having a few gargoyls and cathedrals done for a sleeve and all combined, each of these pieces will have a different meaning or even tell one story, and that all depends on the individual who has it…It might tell a personal tale about heartache or a fear conquered, but never let anyone tell you what your ink means when they have no idea what you have been through..

Keeping it elegant… Taking a look at some classic gothic ink, most of us will usually see gargoyles and old gothic cathedrals when it comes to this topic….Random normies (normal people) would look at you, if you have some of these designs, and cringe or pull up their noses or even be very intrigued by the powerful graphics and colour used to put your piece of art on display for everyone to see….To express yourself, these days, have become easier since it seems to have become the era for art and getting inked is a common day occurrence now…

When it comes to a more fantasy scene and gothic dragons are seen, it has been said to come across as being more fierce then those Chinese dragon tattoos…This only because they are designed to look more evil or more frightening since it has got a lot to do with a dark era/scene… A more common gothic tattoo would also be the skull…And no, not those colourful sugar skulls done to celebrate the day of the dead in Mexico, but those ones with the flames and playing cards, maybe even a pair of guns as the cross bones…you know? Old school, yeah…when those flame tattoos and pinup girls as well as those old sailor tattoos were cool.. Somehow, all of those have found a way to come back, making some people find more meaning in these old school ink…

Having all these different and unique ways to express ourselves only gives more people around us a very clear idea of just how creative our culture can be.. To the surprise of many, Goths are usually quite interesting individuals that are very intelligent, talented, and creative. It may be true that most Goths have been outcasted from society, but it doesn't have a reflection on the person they are inside. Goths are usually great artist, painters, designers, writers, and drawers. They have creative minds that are represented in their tattoos.

Yes we still have our conservative people around who would not ever even get an ear pierced, but that is what makes us all so different and unique, beautiful in each and every way…Not every tattoo will have the

FRIGHT NIGHT - A GRIEF HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN By Melt Kruger Before things went bump in the night, before candies were handed out to ghouls and girls and costumes were bought at an insanely premium price, Halloween had a very different meaning.

and superstitions, before becoming the commercial holiday that we know and love. Various aspects were adopted from the Celtic summer’s end festival of Samhain, as well as the Roman festival of the dead called Paternalia.

Halloween is celebrated annually on 31 October, on the eve of the Christian holiday of All Hallows Day the start of a three day celebration of the saints and martyrs. A veritable day of the dead.

Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter. It was, however, also a widely held belief that this period acted as a portal to the world of the dead.

Yet, All Hallows Eve has a history that many scholars believe predates its secular stigma. There is evidence that the concept of Halloween has ties to Celtic harvest festivals and pagan beliefs.

The tradition of dressing up in ghoulish costumes and trick-or-treating for Halloween as we know it today, can be traced back to the olden practices of “mumming” and “guising”. People would disguise themselves and venture from door to door, asking for food. It can also be linked back to the medieval custom of “souling” in Britain and Ireland, when the poor went about knocking on doors on Hallowmas (celebrated on November 1), gathering food

The word “Halloween” dates back to roughly 1745, meaning ‘holy evening’. An easy concept to muster, except that we are almost four centuries away. Halloween has evolved via a smorgasbord of assimilation from various cultures, beliefs

in exchange for prayers for the dead.

obscurity and Halloween became a largely “children’s” holiday.

Various mythological and supernatural entities have been associated with All Hallow’s Eve, including fairies and witches. In twentieth century Ireland, it was believed to be a time when spirits of the dead could return to haunt the living world.

In later years, Halloween’s popularity grew exponentially amongst adults as well, with many going to great lengths to dress up, host events and get involved in garishly ghoulish fun. Whatever its origins, Halloween continues to delight and frighten adults and kids alike all over the world. So get dressed up and get outside, but beware the things that go bump in the night on All Hallows Eve.

Modern Halloween originated when its pagan beliefs accompanied the influx of Irish immigrants across the Atlantic to North America in the nineteenth century. By the middle of the twentieth century, most of its religious connotations had faded into

House of Goth HOG, House of Goth, there has been much speculation, wondering and rumours of what it is, what it’s about and its purpose, although it isn’t a secret , but an entity that’s open to questioning and information gathering, it would seem that people are unsure of what HOG really is, well Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you House of Goth.

HoG's like the SAGS will serve the Goths, but with HoG, their main focus will be their respected provinces, having a team of people dedicated to finding and recruiting the Goths of that particular province. That way, each HoG can make sure that no Goth is forgotten or left behind... Each council of each HoG will have one or two members rise and form the Elder council, the Elder council consisting of members from all HoG's combined will function and serve as direct directors of the SAGS, that way there will be ensured unity between covens and the main purpose of the goals, vision and mission... That way we really put our walk behind our talk of bringing everyone together as a family...

Well HoG is "House of Goth," the next phase in the SAGS. It follows the same principles, rules and goals as the SAGS, but where the SAGS is spread entirely over SA, HoG will be launched in each province, a Gothic coven of sorts, catering Goth to all Goths. With HoG each province's coven will have a council ensuring things get done and that things are happening in accordance with the SAGS.

Whereas events and other functions are concerned, we will no longer have the SAGS host them, but rather each 46

respected HoG hosting them and presenting them. In this way members from that province do it, with direct information about what is and what isn't applicable for the location.

of being a family... Secondly I will give each HoG a business, which will serve as a means to get the Goths of each HoG to work together with one another making these businesses profitable. Other than that these businesses will serve as a means of income for

Furthermore, the idea of the HoG's is to bring the Goths closer, so internal events will be hosted to unite and create bonds within the covens, that way we can compensate and put more meaning to the term

the HoG and its members. That way the members and HoG's can grow in size and power with a means of financial backing...

The idea of these Houses are much more than covens. Being an Goth is greatly frowned upon by the norm and even the alt societies. We are shunned yet we are exactly what we are, 7 out of every 10 alt people are there because they rebel against society, they rebel against discipline, respect, and responsibility. They lead alt lives because they care not to "grow up," you might say, not all but many, we as Goths, we abide by it all, but in our way... In most cases, the truest person you can know is a true Goth... And for that we are shunned, so these houses will be a standard to Goths and non-Goths of who and what we really are, they will be the family most never had, they will be the go-to people. These Houses will serve as aid to the needed, as teachers to students, they will serve the Gothic community, and business-wise, well things cost money and people need jobs, so that's why I'm willing to have each House own a business, for that purpose... An open invitation to any who wished to join House of Goth.

47

We would hereby like to formally invite you to join House of Goth. House of Goth will be the first and official Gothic based house and coven, giving every member of the Gothic community the chance to become part of a family. With the HoG you will have the opportunity to become part of something larger, working with others of like thinking and livelihood. Together we will build a lasting house, we will lay deep foundation for future generations to come. Not only will we be a house and a family, but we will be a close community, being there for one another, standing by one another, leading and guiding one another. We will have rules and laws governing all of us, protecting ourselves. There will also be a ranking where everyone will have the chance to work themselves to higher positions within the HoG. It’s not politically based, but as with most things in life we need a structure to work from, especially if we intend to maintain our mission and goals, aspiring to become so much more than the mere mundane. We will embrace our inner Goth beyond any comparison. We will stand tall with our lineage behind us; we will stand proud of who and what we are.

Not all about the serious, the HoG has future plans for business enterprises, events and gatherings as well. Leaving the unthinkable just within reach.

Along with this invite you will receive copies of an application form where we request personal information from you, you've read this letter and understand what we plan, so the information we request is within reason. Also, a copy of our rules will be shared, they are the ground rules and the laws that must be followed and enforced by all of us, we as Goths are branded as the evil in this world, we not only

48

have Goths looking at us, but other people, society and the world. If we intend to become as strong as we want to be, we must function as a on the principals of a good human being, that's the law of nature.

Lastly, a copy of our mission and goals; our vision will be shared with you, so that you can take a closer look at what we really have in store and plan for the future.

We look forward to hearing your response. By MGR

Rob fucking Zombie Rob Zombie is an American musician, film director, screenwriter and film producer. He rose to prominence as a founding member of the band White Zombie which formed in the mid-1980s and rose to fame in the early 1990s.

Rob Zombie was approached about writing and directing the 3rd movie in The Crow series of movies, but his script was rejected by the studio. But in 2000, Rob Zombie's directing and writing career officially took flight with cult favourite House of 1000 Corpses. This was a movie that appealed to the grindhouse and drive-in movie fans, and was somewhat controversial for its graphic violence and gory imagery. Universal backed out after seeing the product, but Lion's Gate picked it up and released it. House of 1000 Corpses went on to make a modest $12 million at the box office, but since the budget was small, and DVD sales were brisk, it was a profitable movie, and it spawned a sequel.

The sequel, The Devil's Rejects, was released in July 2005, and was a significantly different film from Zombie's first effort. House of 1000 Corpses has more in common with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and other 1970's horror films, while The Devil's Rejects is more of an action film with similarities to Natural Born Killers and the western revenge genre. At the time I’m writing this, Zombie is working on an animated film based on his comic book creation El Superbeasto. The movie is titled The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, and Rob Zombie is the writer and executive producer. It's being directed by Doug Lawrence, the voice of Plankton on SpongeBob Squarepants, and Sheri Moon Zombie is set to be the female lead. His newest project will be released in 2016. The film is called 31. Do yourself a favour and watch these creations by Rob Zombie this Halloween.

FILMOGRAPHY

After a raid on the rural home of the psychopathic Firefly family, two members of the clan, Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), manage to flee the scene. Heading to a remote desert motel, the killers reunite with Baby's father, Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), who is equally demented.

An empty fuel tank and a flat tire lead two couples down a terror-riddled road to the House of 1000 Corpses. "House of 1000 Corpses" is at its core a story of family - a cast of twisted individuals who, with each slash of a throat or stab thru the chest, add bodies to their sick human menagerie.

Staying cool Summer Survival Guide Summer is here and we have already experience temperatures of 35+ degrees. The heat can be exhausting. You might feel like the sun is burning you to death and the heat is sapping all your strength. If you’re from European descent, you might be cursing your forefathers for moving to this hot continent. Here are some tips on how to keep cool during the sweltering African summer.

54

Clothing We are led to believe that black clothing is the absolute worst thing to wear when it is warm. This is not entirely true. On The Straight Dope, they explain that “black clothing absorbs sunlight and the heat radiating from your body, but if it is loose-fitting, and there is wind, the wind convects the heat away faster than it is absorbed. White clothing reflects sunlight, but also reflects internal heat back towards your body, so the net effect under identical conditions is less cooling than if you wore black.” Clothing made from natural fibres (e.g. linen, cotton, silk) “breathe” better than synthetic fibres (e.g. polyester, pvc), making them a better choice to wear in hot weather. Loose fitting, flowing clothing also helps to keep you cool by providing ventilation. Sunglasses are a must have to keep glare and sunburn from your eyes. It is very important to buy decent sunglasses, because cheap sunglasses can actually be worse for your eyes than not wearing any at all. Your pupils dilate when you wear sunglasses and if the sunglasses do not offer UVB and UVA protection, then more UV rays will enter your pupils. These UV rays can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancer. The best type of sunglasses are those with polarized lenses. Hats are helpful in keeping cool and protecting your head from the sun. Wide brimmed hats are the best for protection, as they offer the biggest amount of shade.

Umbrellas and Parasols Umbrellas are not just to keep the rain away, but are great for keeping cool in summer. They also help to combat sunburn for those of us with pale complexions. Using an umbrella when walking outdoors also helps you to not get tired so quickly from the heat. Parasols are beautiful, but do not provide much shade, as many of them are lacy and allow sun through. Unfortunately umbrellas do not provide much protection from UV rays. Black umbrellas are the most effective, but you can also buy umbrellas specifically made to block out UV rays.

55

Dehydration Dehydration becomes a real threat during the hot African summer. We become dehydrated when we lose more water than we take in. It’s better to drink water continuously throughout the day rather than drinking a large amount at once. Fresh fruits and vegetables also contain water and can help to combat dehydration, especially watery ones like watermelon and cucumber. Beverages like coffee, alcohol and sodas will actually dehydrate you. Teas that do not contain caffeine (e.g. rooibos, chamomile, green, and other herbal teas) are also good for replacing fluids. Coconut water is very good in combatting dehydration and yogurt and cottage cheese also help to relieve dehydration by restoring normal levels of sodium and potassium in the body. Not everyone likes drinking water and even for those of us who do find it refreshing, water can get quite boring. There are ways to spice it up a bit. You can add sparkling water, a splash of fruit juice, lemon juice, cucumber slices, etc. Frozen fruit juice ice blocks works well too.

Fans and Air Conditioning Fans are cheaper and more energy efficient than air conditioners, but cannot cool down a large area. Fans are better suited to direct cooling, e.g. a ceiling fan above your bed or a desk fan while you work. When using an air conditioner, keep the windows closed to improve effective cooling. Setting the air conditioner to a slightly warmer temperature (e.g. 22° instead of 18°) saves power.

56

Nifty Gadgets The personal mister is a very useful cooling gadget. Simply fill it with water and spray onto your face, arms, and legs for a cooling effect. If you don’t have a mister, a spray bottle will also help, but the mister is more efficient. Ice lollies are another great way to keep cool and are so easy to make. One of the easiest recipes are to buy a fruit juice of your choice and simply pour it into the moulds, freeze it, and enjoy the fruits of your labour the next day. For the more adventurous there are many delicious ice lolly recipes for fruity, creamy, and even boozy ice lollies. USB fans are cute little fans powered by your computer. A larger fan would probably be a better buy, but these miniature fans are cute.

The Deathrock lifestyle Deathrock is the American counterpart to the British Bat cave scene. It emerged as a horror influenced offshoot of the West Coast hard-core scene in the late 70's/early 80's, and as a result is louder, faster and punkier than the post-punk inspired Bat cave scene. Deathrock is usually closely associated with the '77 Punk, Goth, bat cave, Post-Punk, Anarcho-Punk, Psychobilly, and new wave scenes

58

Listen to deathrock music to decide whether or not you actually like it. If you're not already familiar with it, Deathrock sounds like a dark and oftentimes humorous mixture of Punk, New Qave, Goth, Glam and Acid Rock. Do not go into a Deathrock club requesting metal influenced artists like Marilyn Manson or Wednesday 13/Murderdolls lest you wish to receive a lot of blank stares - Deathrock clubs don't play metal though they do play Psychobilly, Gothic rock, and '77 punk. Start off with the classic Deathrock bands like: 

Christian Death

45 Grave

Specimen

Sex Gang Children

Southern Death Cult

Sexbeat

Alien Sex Fiend

Virgin Prunes

Blood and Roses

Bonemen Of Barumba

The Birthday Party

The Gun Club

T.S.O.L.

Rudimentary Peni

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry

Burning Image

Anorexic Dread

Voodoo Church

U.K. Decay

Super Heroines

The Flesh Eaters

Phaidia

The Lords of the New Church

Kommunity FK

Theatre of Ice

Deathrockers are huge music geeks, and lovers of obscure bands and equally obscure horror movies (especially zombie movies and supernatural thrillers). They own impressive vinyl collections. Develop a high tolerance towards extremely long and detailed discussion on what to do during a zombie apocalypse and whether you'd be better off owning vinyl, MP3s, tapes of CDs, and be prepared in defend your choice.

Common punk attire and Mohawks (The common Deathrock variant known as the Death-hawk), Flamboyant make-up and clothes with a cryptic or macabre meaning are great.

Leopard print, skeleton bones, and ripped fishnet stockings over your arms and legs (for male and female!) are often the best for the Deathrock genre. Black is the main colour, but a

60

combination with any dark shade of pink ranging from purple to near blood-green will give that haunting effect for your outfit.

Develop a satirical sense of humour, everything has a meaning no matter how cryptic it is and that can be used for or against you so you might as well use it for your own means. Political and sociological humour are a must, please do understand politics before stating "Down with the Right-Wing!" at a democratic caucus. Deathrock is unicorns and rainbows and unicorns and rainbows are a dangerous yet intellectual movement so be aware.

Develop your meditating and cultivating skills". Deathrockers are at their core absurdist’s who believe the only things that give life meaning are relationships with others and creating art. So whether it's designing your own Deathrock themed blazer, leather jacket, or just making your own band patches and band t-shirts, and possibly decorating your room or apartment, have fun with it and realize that creating things helps give life meaning.

Go to clubs and experience new local bands and music. Funky hair is a must as with flamboyant make-up. Deathhawks, the Deathrock variation of the Mohawk, or any funky coloured over the top spiked or natural hair is a must.

61

A Deathrocker can fit in in both Goth and Punk clubs as with some Industrial

clubs so keep an

open mind while around diverse friends. Whereas a Punk may be too Punk for the Goth club and a Goth may be too Goth for a Punk club the Deathrocker often fits in at either!

DIY the most important thing to Deathrock is DIY. Ultimately Deathrock is a form of Punk and Punk in itself is a pro-Thespian movement, so make yourself and your wardrobe count and do not give in to the man!

Remember it is all in fun; do not take yourself too seriously and over do-it with the make-up or attire as you may be labelled as a poseur plain and simple. Adding to that, do put deep meaning into your attire, whether satirical or of a strong political persuasion. You will be respected by you peers if you are not some corporate plastic follower.

THE FROTH OF GOTH… There is no better way to find out what fits you better than to experiment and try some new techniques and brand new colours. It might at times seem scary and daunting when discovering a new style when it comes to makeup.. A few things before we do try something totally different would be to know what we like, what appeals to us, which colours to use, which techniques to try, maybe at times even our face shape, skin type, and what we would like to try that’s new. Since we’re looking at the Deathrocker this month, let’s try a different perspective of make and go with something along the lines of Alice Cooper for the guys and Eva O for all you ladies…

4. And there you have it….Alice Cooper makeup done.

Here are a few steps to follow when trying out

Trying out Eva O’s look:

the Cooper style: 1. Get out those eyeliners, and do not be shy…Alice’s first appeal to the liner was much less enthusiastic as you might think. It was merely just to get his stage impression out there as far as he could so that even the rockers in the back rows could relate. 2. Start by outlining your eyes and smudge the liner so that the whole of your eye lid is covered in black. 3. Draw a line down your face but do not go lower than your nose.

1. A lot like the famous KISS, Eva loves her eyeliner and bloodshot lipstick, making her lips and eyes pop and causing such a dramatic look. So, time to get out the eyeliner and start drawing! When trying to get the swirls/lines drawn upward and away from your eyes, try to contour your eyebrow shape so that we don’t get that freakish, “I have no idea how to put on makeup” look and pull it off perfect. 2. If needed, we have a few steps to follow to help with the above mentioned strategy and it is quite simple. All we need is an eye-pencil or even just anything long enough to reach from the side of your nose, up

63

toward your forehead. We will be using this to shape and mark where we stop with our stripy perfection, almost like shaping your eyebrows.

they are very popular in the Goth and punk scene. If you don’t think you know them you probably do: you know when you hear songs that you’re sure you’ve heard before but don’t know where and when? This is what happens with Deathrock, but mostly for the very unique look of the band members and fans of this movement.

3. Making our marks in an upward movement will not only cause a more dramatic and scenic look, but it will attract most of the attention to the eyes making your face look slimmer and more mysterious. 4. Adding eye-shadow is up to you, whether to blend it with another colour or to just leave it as is, that will define what your personality says about you. 5. Try some red lipstick and get some gloss over it to make those lips look even more luscious. No one can go wrong with a little bit of classic red lipstick ;) 6. Adding some light blush will also be a personal preference and is totally up to you. 7. So happy shaping and may you pull off Eva O’s look to the T.

When the first Deathrockers were doing their thing, there was no such thing as Goth or Deathrock. This is how Dinah Cancer, singer of 45 Grave puts it: “The first prowlings of Deathrock came in the early ’80s before we were labeled as our other counterparts – the gothic movement. There were no Goths. The Deathrockers were splintered off from the punk/hardcore scene that was going on at the time. We played punk rock but we loved Halloween and we looked like vampires. So the phrase ‘Deathrock’ was born.” Deathrock originated from punk rock, taking a horror and spooky spin inspired by artists like Alice Cooper and horror B-movies. Deathrockers were also inspired by surrealism, cabaret, and religious iconography like Catholicism and Voodoo. Rozz Williams (singer of Christian Death) is the first and perfect example of the Deathrock aesthetic. Androgynous, with a keen interest in painting, poetry, and other fine arts, he’s also elevated to icon status because he hanged himself at the early age of 34.

Whoever you choose to look like, don’t forget to have the matching hair and outfits…have fun.

Some further info on Deathrocker dress code, makeup and hair styling…: Deathrock: a Brief Introduction and Look Suggestions Deathrock is a dark subgenre of punk rock (or better post-punk) that lasted very shortly from 1979 to 1985 in CA. It was primarily based in Los Angeles, CA and the most famous bands are 45 Grave and Christian Death, just to name a couple. We’re sure you know these bands as

Even if the term Deathrock initially referred to the post-punk movement developed in the 1980s on the West Coast, it is now a broader term used to define a whole genre. “Deathrock” as we know it today also developed in the New York area thanks to The Cramps, which later coined the word “psychobilly.” The Misfits are

64

Striped Pants – Skeleton Dress

also sometimes defined Deathrock (if the adjective “horror punk” is not used). Deathrock is an American phenomenon, but the gloom and doom music “trend” happened almost at the same time in Europe and more specifically in the UK. We’re sure you’re already thinking about bands like Specimen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend and Virgin Prunes. They all had one thing in common: the Batcave, the legendary “dark punk” club in London where all gothic punks used to meet and enjoy live music.

This look is very diverse, but it has some staples that are almost mandatory to be recognized as a Deathrocker. One of these staples is ripped tights. Ripped tights are worn as tights or as tops, as band tops or like actual sleeves. They are also worn over platform boots, which leads us to the next staple, huge platform boots. Almost every Deathrocker owns at least one pair. Last but not least, the haircut. Big backcombed mohawks or extreme sidecuts, paired with pretty heavy makeup.

As usual, when the years go by the original look gets lost in the way and something new comes along. This is the case for Deathrock as well. There are still a few “original” Deathrockers that can be found in clubs, but the largest part of horror and 80s fans have a mixed up look. Psychobilly, horror punk, punk, gothic and Deathrock clothing, makeup and hairstyle merged together and gave birth to some extreme pieces of clothing and looks. Let’s see some suggestions to get the Deathrock look.

65

Gothic eye makeup made easy When most people think of Gothic eye makeup they usually imagine thick, black lines around the eye, and panda-like dark eyeshadow. (Er, guilty…) Whilst this is a tried-and-true Gothic look, your friendly neighbourhood goths will reveal swirls, glitter, and even – gasp! – colour. Many Gothic girls and guys like to get creative with makeup, and ‘dramatic’ is the word to remember. PS – with this makeup, nongoths are also allowed!

Goths and eyeliner – a match made in purgatory

that’s the look you’re going for, then great. Otherwise, don’t join the lines in the corners, or line only the bottom half of your lower lid. You can also line the top and bottom lids in different colors. White eyeliner on the inside of your bottom lid will make your eyes

Because thick, dark eyeliner is a Gothic staple, let’s start there. Liquid eyeliner makes a smooth, sharp line, but it can be tricky to work with; a steady hand is a must. (If you really want to use it, remember practice makes perfect. No, really!) For a great smoky look, use a pencil liner dipped in matching eye shadow. You can also use a dampened small brush and powder eye shadow.

look bigger and brighter, but be careful doing this if your eyes are sensitive.

Of course, you can never go wrong with black eye liner, but purple, green, blue, even red and white can all look great lining the eyes.

as simple as a small “wing” extending past the upper lid (think retro) or a little swirl, or you can get fancy and draw curly-cues, sharp points, and other designs all around the eye. Liquid eye liner looks better than pencil for these types of Gothic eye makeup designs. If you have trouble

adornments are sure to attract the lecherous attention of jaded Goths in their late twenties and early thirties who will probably give you free speed if you prove sufficiently pliable.

Makeup Tips for the Bleak [Taken from Ghastly Magazine, Issue 3]

3. Find a shade of lipstick not everyone else is wearing. Theatrical supply stores are the best for really deep shades of congealed-blood red. Apply it with a lip brush for a more precise and severe effect.

Done badly, Gothic makeup and dress can look painfully stupid. The following are some suggestions for how to do it well. 1. Whiteface should create the illusion that you really are that pale, and not that you have a bunch of makeup from Wallgreen's caked all over your face. Use a good base: not even the most gifted makeup artist can get the necessary coverage from inferior makeup. If you have dark skin, don't try to do whiteface unless you're going for a very stylized harlequin look or are willing to put makeup on all exposed skin areas. Try using a base just one or two shades lighter than your own colour, and then put white powder over it. This will give you an ethereal, almost grayish cast.

4. Strive for originality in your costume. For those doing vintage looks, realize that both the eighteenth century and the Victorian era have been done to death. The Twenties, Thirties, and Forties are largely untapped by Goths and have great potential. One could dress as an emaciated, opium-addicted flapper from the Aleister Crowley set or pose as the Black Dahlia, a would-be actress from the Forties whose gimmick was that she dyed her hair black and would wear only black clothing; her ghastly mutilation and murder remain unsolved to this day. Also remember that black is not the only colour. Deep blues, greys, and greens, as well as blood-red, purple, and ivory, can be equally striking.

After spending money on a decent base, take the trouble to apply it evenly. It's appalling how many Goths overlook something so basic and vital to their entire aesthetic. Equally bad and unfortunately as common is the tendency to overpowder and to end one's pallor at the jawbone. Such mistakes are just inexcusably stupid. Don't make them.

5. If you have scars on your wrists from suicide attempts, by all means display them proudly. The same goes for bruises, cuts, and track marks. Abscesses, however, should always be coyly veiled in filmy black fabric.

2. On the subject of eyeliner, liquid is better, but if your hands shake, by all means use the most expensive pencil you can afford. Cheap pencils go on faint and will smudge after an hour. Do something original with your eye makeup: cobwebs or bat wings drawn across the cheek look silly on anyone over the age of fifteen. On those under fifteen, however, such

Your Gothic look should be as opulent, decadent, and original as possible. If you're not up to making the necessary effort to carry off this most highmaintenance of affectations, try wearing plaid shirts and listening to Nirvana instead.

Summer Makeup Tips We all know that warm weather can be a drag and mess up our makeup. You also don’t need your face to feel like you’re wearing a heat mask all day. Here are some tips on how to get the best out of your makeup during the summer months.

Primers To combat shine, use a non-oily primer on the areas that are prone to get shiny, like your Tzone. Primer goes on after your moisturizer, but before your foundation. For the summer, you’ll need to use a lighter, less oily moisturizer than in winter. A primer on your lids will help keep the eyeshadow where it’s supposed to be instead of collecting in the crease.

Foundation To apply liquid foundation that will not feel and look greasy, use a foundation brush to apply it with criss-cross strokes. This results in thin, even application. Translucent powder will set your foundation. You can also make your own makeup setting spray by following the recipe on Everything Pretty. Apply this using a powder brush and dab the powder on rather than using longer strokes. A makeup setter will also help that your base doesn’t just sweat off during the day. Blotting paper will help to clear up oiliness during the day.

Eye Makeup A useful tip is to substitute eyeshadow for eyeliner, which will keep better in heat. Crème eyeshadows do not cake like powder shadows do. Jumbo eye pencils are basically

69

crème eyeshadows in pencil form and are great for controlled application. These pencils can be smudged to give a softer look.

Liquid eyeliner won’t smudge away like a kohl eyeliner pencil will. A wax brow pencil will last longer than other brow pencils and keep the hairs in place. Waterproof eyeliners and mascaras won’t sweat off and leave you with unsightly blotches.

Lips Lip stain or matt gloss are better alternatives to lipstick or shiny lip glosses, as they hold better and feel lighter on the lips. If you do use a lipstick, make it last longer by blotting it with tissue, then applying translucent powder. You might need to apply more than one layer using this blotting technique.

The Gory Cut A step by step tutorial By Roulette Seri Step 1: Mark the area for the “wound with red paint or makeup.

Step 2: Cover the area with liquid latex and let it dry.

Step 3: Gently cut the latex to create a basis for the wound and cover it again with liquid latex.

Step 4: Before the latex dries stick some cotton wool to it. Let it dry and repeat. Latex. Cotton wool. Dry. Three or four layers work well.

71

Step 5: Cut through the latex and cotton wool. This will become the torn “skin”. Use a cream foundation to blend it into your own skin.

Step 6: Colour and shade to create some dimension. Use black along the inner edges to create depth.

Final Step: Add some fake blood and a piece of clear plastic (optional) to create protruding “glass”

72

Creating the Severed Finger look A step by step tutorial By Roulette Seri

Step 1: Use masking tape to stick the tip of your finger to the middle of your finger and paint the masking tape black.  Use either your middle finger or your ring finger.

Step 2: With red paint or makeup, colour in the part that will be severed.

73

Step 3: Glue cotton wool around the edges, nail glue works amazingly well and add a thin layer of Liquid Latex over the edges. Let it dry and, by using a cream foundation, colour the cotton wool and blend it into your skin. Be careful not to cover the black areas.

Step 4: Add some fake blood and Bob’s your Uncle!!

The Slit Throat A step-by-step tutorial By Roulette Seri

I usually close this one up with safety pins and it gives a really great effect, but let’s try the clean cut.

Step 1: Layer liquid latex and cotton wool. Four or five layers would suffice. Cover the selected area with liquid latex and stick cotton wool over it before it dries. Wait for it to dry and set and add another layer, etc.

78

Step 2: Once the cotton wool is completely dry, carefully cut a slit through the middle. Cover with a foundation that matches your skin colour (unlike mine).

Step 3: Use black and red to colour the inner part and to create depth.

79

Step 4: Add some liquid fake blood and let it run! Finish off the look with safety pins or fishing gut and have fun!!

Life’s Thorns

Confrontation This month’s topic: there's confrontation in so many things we do and think, but we won't be covering it at such a depth at this stage.

Confronting a friend about a bad deed or action, even a choice should never be taken as an offense, if they are truly your friend, they'll listen to you. They’ll respect you to tell them the hard things - that is what friends are for in the end.

For now we will look at why, how and when we do choose to confront whatever it is.

Confrontation is a healthy aspect in one's life. We shouldn't let that pent up anger or anguish build up pressure, it only festers and change us inside. It might not be now, but slowly and steadily it poisons us, changes us, and when we do take note, we have no idea of how this change or outburst happened.

A lover would either see your confrontation as preachy, an attack, or criticism, but only in certain instances, such as when they do not value your opinion, or appreciate your life and in certain cases where the root of the confrontation lies, such as alcohol or narcotics. This list can go on, yes, and in multiple areas and scenarios, but the goal here is to set you at ease, to help you confront what needs to be let out. That is an issue so many of us deal and struggle with. We may easily confront others, yet our friends or family isn't the same thing, or vice a versa. We’re all different with a different set of rules we live by.

Confronting an issue you may face isn't always easy, it either means taking the issue up with a loved one, a friend, a bully or someone of stature and power, but the feeling you may feel about confronting them is either fear or being unsure of whether one should go through with it, or just leave it, and leaving something of this nature is never a good thing.

Lastly, self-confrontation, knowing what we do, or act upon, our little voice inside us speaking or warning us; how do we deal with that voice per say? Do we ignore it? And afterwards regret or feel bad about it?

Standing firm for a bit to say your piece or to state your feelings is never a bad or selfish thing, neither is it an attack, although, the manner in which you do this does play a role. Do not sacrifice being respectful. You expect them to respect you enough to listen to your confrontation, so don't go to a place where you do not wish them to go with you, nor go there even if they did. Don't become the person other people are.

How we treat ourselves has a unique role in how we treat others. We cannot expect to be there for others if we cannot be there for ourselves. Sure, we're able to help others, but the toll it takes on us is massively more than it ought to be. Besides for being there for others, knowing what we do, did or what we're about to do;

81

when do we draw the line and tell ourselves to stop this? We confront ourselves easily several times on a daily basis, and they’re not all about negative or bad happenings, but good and positive ones too. The question is, how do we do it? Do we handle it the same way? Or do we take more joy in the good one than the bad one? Are we too easy on ourselves when it comes to our wrong doings? All of this plays a role in our lives. Something we should carefully consider. How do we deal with ourselves? When others mention things we're unhappy about? When we ourselves realize we're wrong, we've been wrong? How do we deal? What do we do?

I'm leaving this right there, I'd love to hear from you how you go about this? -tBR

Consulting the Seers 1 - As a baby Goth, still kind of new to the whole thing, I want to know how to go about making new friends who share the same interests as me. Where do I find people who are like me? Listen to the same music as me?

younger, you have the internet available to you so go search for some social sites or if you are familiar with a few chat apps, like Mxit, 2go, Twitter and even Facebook, there are sites about everywhere. As long as you remember to keep safe and never give out any personal information about yourself to anyone‌Good luck‌

Answer: My dear baby bat, we all had to start off where you are, and frankly, it is not as difficult as you think‌Keep an eye out for people who dress similar to you, maybe listen to the way that others talk who are about the same age as you are and start conversing about your interests. At times, we forget that not all Goths dress or act the same, so even if they dress a bit differently, they might still have the same music taste as you. Unlike when we were

2 - Hi Seers, I am battling with depression which I think is caused by my sexuality. The thing is, I'm heterosexual and, I'm polyamorous, and I haven't had any luck finding anyone who can understand how it is to love more than one person at a time. Most people see it as cheating, are they right and I'm wrong?

83

Answer: “People who identify as polyamorous typically reject the view that sexual and relational exclusivity are necessary for deep, committed, long-term loving relationships. Those who are open to, or emotionally suited for, polyamory may embark on a polyamorous relationship when single or already in a monogamous or open relationship… “Each and every person are confined by their own judgment and opinion. It is just like one person would go and call another person dumb or being “a doll” or “Barbie” etc. It doesn’t make that person any superior to the person being named anything. We all have our own view on life and what we prefer and what not…Basically, go be who you are and don’t let anyone change what you believe in or take away what you want in your

life. You are not the only one out there struggling with this issue, you just carry on and sooner or later, you will get the chance to meet others who share the same views... 3 -So, I went to place recently, where there were lots of people who are like me, Gothic and alternative, but I was basically lonely the whole time... Maybe I don't have any social skills or something, so here's my question: how do I make friends with these people who seem to be just like me? Answer: There is no better way to make friends than to step out of your comfort zone for a few hours or even days…Just putting yourself out there will make a big difference from the start. Otherwise just being yourself, some small talk won’t do any harm ;)

This Halloween watch the movie that was banned in the United Kingdom for thirty years… Freaks Being Halloween and all, I initially decided to take a survey and from the responses compile some top ten horror movie list that would make your Halloween weekend a horrific one. But, I decided to watch something else... something not really horrific at all. I mean, I could definitely start off the top ten list with films we know all too well and love all year round – American Psycho, The Crow, A Clockwork Orange or something “real horrorshow” by Dario Argento. This year I want to let you in on something different! Freaks, directed by Tod Browning is a film that did not really make folks from the 1930’s jump outta their boots, instead it disgusted them. The reason for this was the time period in which the film was made. Critics did not really have a broad view or open minds… I think this is what folks from alternative subcultures have faced at some point in their life. We are often misunderstood and so were the freaks of Freaks. I could tell you what Freaks is about, but it is a story you probably know all too well. A normallooking couple decide to take advantage of the weird crowd, laughing at them behind their backs, never wanting to be a part of the freak family at all. From this film we learn that no one takes advantage of the freak family because you look different. This movie is a chance to connect with something you either find powerful or dull.

Influences stretch- Watching this film one can draw parallels between the film and American Horror Story Freak Show. It is spectacular to see so many genuine carnival performers in Freaks and how American Horror Story tried to capture that authenticity for their fourth season.

This Halloween you might choose to stay indoors again, saying something like, “South Africa will never do Halloween right and partake in your yearly ritual of Frankenstein or Nosferatu. How about adding Freaks to the lineup? I could have used this film review for something like World Goth Day and let you have a real bloody mess to try on the 31st, but I am all about trying strange roads and I hope you will join me this Halloween.

She’s back, and in a tangle

The Girl in the Spider's Web If you thought the last thing Salander would do was kick the hornets’ nest then you were wrong, Lisbeth is back and this time finds herself tangled in a spider’s web! The Millennium Trilogy consists of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played with Fire", and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest". “The Girl” being badass Lisbeth Salander.

learning new words, but I also love effortless reading. I read until I saw the sun coming through my dark curtains and that was that. I read about the most astonishing, tough, fictional heroine of the 21st century. I do not want to hear about Katniss or Tris Prior in the same sentence as Salander, you can totally write their reviews…

Stieg Larsson, writer of the Millenium series died before the books became a success, so when news of the fourth book was out, fans asked who is this David Lagercrantz and will he be able to carry the torch?

So what’s “The Girl” up to? We read about some new characters but our old favorites are still there. The most special addition is August, the son of a scientist and witness to his father’s death (Frans Balder). Before his death, Frans Balder noticed his son displaying signs of Savant syndrome. Things get interesting when poor August is hunted but becomes safe in the presence of Salander. I found it extraordinary that David decided to throw a mentally disabled child and Salander together. One must read on to find out what Salander and August have in common, and why they must hide from the enemy.

When I was purchasing The Girl in the Spider's Web, a cashier explained how skeptical he was of reading the book. “I have the book at home but I’m too afraid to open it. The cover is legit though!” He said. I told him that as long as someone is writing about Lisbeth Salander I am going to read about it. He is right though, the cover is “legit”. You will not be disappointed with the offering by David Lagercrantz. His writing style is simple, slick, crisp and clean. I do not know about you but I absolutely love it when I can just read a book without opening a dictionary or google. I love

tone this down as I couldn't understand it. -David Langercrantz in an interview.
