lessings brethren I am passionate about the articles we have for you in this issue because they cut across the core of Christian living and get to the heart of the matter. Are you really saved? This is the most seminal question that needs an affirmative answer if we are to rest with the blessed assurance that our eternity is secure with God and that Hell fire is not our destiny. These days it seems that people cannot bear with challenging questions or sound doctrine as was prophesied by Jesus himself. We find that we’d rather have just enough of God to lead a respectable life ,be morally upright and tick that politically correct box that we we need to, in order to fall within the realms of the status quo. But will all that secure our eternity? We need to repent and be baptised for the remission of our sins and walk in accordance with the word of God and fulfil the Father’s will by actively building His kingdom until He returns to test our fruitfulness and productivity. Will we hear those faithful words “Well done good and faithful servants” or will He say “depart from me you workers of iniquity I never knew you”? These are hard sayings but they are exactly what Jesus asked when he was on earth and he is still asking us today. Our contributors tackle these issues of testing the authenticity of our salvation. Homer Slack’s “Still a Pig?” challenges us to test whether we have experienced a spiritual rebirth via repentance from our sins. His second article “Am I saved?” again looks at the question of true salvation by challenging us to check our Christian foundations, our point of entry into the kingdom. There is indeed a difference between saved and unsaved ‘Christians’ and in following with the theme of true verses false conversion Phillip Clark’s article “Threshing floor” gives us insight into How Jesus will sift the genuinely saved from the religious when He returns for the true Church, His bride. We placed writer C. Richard McCaw’s article “Lot made a lot of mistakes” in the ‘THINK!!’ section of the magazine because there is a lot in there that is food for thought. This article looks at how our sincere need to provide and do well can easily trap us in the proverbial material chase where, if we do not cry out to God for deliverance we 4

could waste our lives and end up totally fruitless and ineffective for God. This world system ‘Sodom’ is designed to keep us chasing an elusive dream which will result in us becoming totally burned out and unfulfilled. This ‘grass is greener over in Sodom’ distraction is still alive today as it was in Lot’s time and even more so now. The real challenge is to make the kingdom of God our priority. Have the faith to believe that God will provide our every need as He has promised. Finally, Richard McCaw’s “How Strong is your foundation?” takes us to the heart of the matter. When all is said and done are we really saved, are we equipped to withstand the challenges of 21st Century living? Are we rooted and grounded in Christ. The Apostle Paul, writing in 2 Corinthians 13:5,challenges us to test ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Time for a spiritual check up. Take courage!

Love as always..

THE MASQUERADE! Look! People are staring, they’re upset with you; You have no mask, you’re out of costume; Snubbed for having broken with convention; Their remarks drip with condescension; Your offence is noted for future recrimination;

Where then can I find acceptance if not in the company of my peers? In the fellowship of family and fellow believers? In the warm company of loved ones of bygone years? Who then will stop this charade, end this parading of parody? I’ll dare to don honesty and bare face as my garment; Instruct the conductor to play a tune of delightful release; And throw off all inhibitions to find pulsating peace; Hear now the reverberating raucous of souls set free; Jubilant in their new found liberty; All masks have been abated; Conductor, orchestra and guests satiated; And the instigator has become the hero; As our dance brought the King great pleasure As the music fades, they all fall away; Each to their corner of reflection; What an event, what an experience! Why didn’t we always do it this way? Why did we ever choose the masquerade? The certainty of honesty; The discerning light of integrity; Dispelled all opportunity for dalliances with impropriety; A safe haven of importunity; Where the knowledge of the character, Of each soul present brought peace, And judgement was silenced as truth left no room for critique; I wonder if I had camouflaged my identity, and not dared to come to the ball as me, would the King have chosen to dance among us, would we ever from the mask be free........ 8

he first word ever used in quoting Jesus’ message when He started His ministry was the word ‘repent’. Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” If Jesus started His ministry and message emphasising the need to repent why is it we hear so little being said today about it? Our Lord and saviour was not the only one who preached repentance although His message would have been enough but John the Baptist His forerunner also preached the exact same message. Matthew 3:12 “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” Repentance means: to feel such sorrow for sin or fault as to be disposed to change one’s life for the better; be penitent. (Dictionary. com) The message of repentance was preached by the apostles. After the demonstration of the Holy Spirit and Peter’s message on the day of Pentecost people enquired as to what they needed to do to be saved. “..Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy

Spirit...’” (Acts 2:38) The fact that ‘repent’ was the first command given in all three examples I believe signifies that repentance is the first step towards salvation. Without repentance there is no salvation, so before we journey any further we need to ask ourselves the question ‘Did I repent and am I saved?’ Note that the understanding we get for repentance in scripture teaches that it is not just stopping in our tracks while still facing the same direction, neither is it just stopping and turning around but is instead a turning around and heading off in the opposite direction away from where we were heading before i.e. it is a fundamental transformation that affects us from the inside out and is evidenced by a change of mind and actions.

who are in need. It is evil to think to yourself “I have two because God has blessed me but they have none because God is not pleased with them therefore I will not share with those whom God has cursed.” Here is the exact quote of what John said, John 3:11 “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” He goes on in verses 12-14 to explain that true repentance is also evidenced by our honesty and contentment. The story of Zacchaeus’ salvation is an exact example of what John was preaching, listen to what Zacchaeus said and Jesus’ response. Luke 19:8 “Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.’ 9 And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, ...’” Zacchaeus’ statement is evidence of repentance which is the starting point of salvation, and Jesus Himself said it “Today salvation has come to this house..” Why? Because he who stole will steal no more but will instead now give back to those he stole from and will provide for those in need. Where there is no fruit there has been no repentance and without repentance there is no salvation.

“Today

salvation has come to this house”

True repentance bears fruit John the Baptist in Luke 3:8 says, “..bear fruits worthy of repentance, ... even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” Note here that repentance bears good fruit that can be observed. John went on to explain, to those who asked, what the fruit of repentance looks like. In effect he was saying if you have more than enough while others are in need do not sit there and do nothing, help those

AM I SAVED? In the kingdom but not of the kingdom...

By Homer Slack

A weird encounter

I

was only a young Christian when I set off by myself to a gospel concert. When I got there, about 100 meters out I was approached by someone I recognised from my community. He asked me if I was there to attend the concert and I told him yes so he told me to follow him. Where this concert was being held the audience would stand in an open air space with a covered stage for the performers all of which was fenced around with gates for entry and exit within the fence. This man took me through a gate and into the grounds then requested the fee for entry. I paid him and he

headed back out. As I looked around and observed I realised that something didn’t fit. At another gate I noticed that people were entering in an organised way, paying their fee and receiving a ticket from officials with marked badges (I wasn’t given a ticket). It then dawned on me that I was conned by a crook who I later learned was a forger who specialised in getting people into big events like football matches and concerts etc. through illegal means. A thief escorted me in through what was meant to be the exit gate and now here I stood in a concert knowing that the patrons had every right to throw

I soon discovered a thief escorted me in through

what was meant to be the exit gate and now here I stood in a concert knowing that the patrons had every right to throw me out because I was there illegally even though I paid this crook the full fee.

me out because I was there illegally even though I paid the full fee. My situation here I believe is exactly what Jesus was describing when He said in Luke 13: 24 “Strive/Make every effort/Work hard to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able...” If entry through the narrow gate is synonymous with getting saved then Jesus here is saying that we should work hard to get saved. But we know that we are saved by grace and not by works so that would, most certainly not be what Jesus is saying. So what is He saying then? As indicated in my story I believe Jesus is saying that, once inside the kingdom, we must work hard at investigating whether we got in through the correct gate. Jesus said this in John 10:9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,..” If we did not enter through door Jesus we will be thrown out, and guess what? If we then try re-entry through the correct gate we will discover that it is now too late for the gate is now officially closed and even though “many...will seek to enter in, [they] shall not be able.” I write this article therefore as a warning to say make every effort now to get out and re-enter through the correct gate if you discover that you entered through the wrong gate and are in the kingdom illegally. If you wait until you are thrown out then re-entry will be impossible “There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.” (Luke 13:28)

Illegal Entries Many ‘Christians’ today came into the kingdom via

the wrong route. We do not belong in the kingdom and neither are we saved simply because we have been attending church since we were children, or because our parents are very good Christians, or our father is a preacher/pastor/vicar etc. You could be part of the worship team, an elder, the church secretary, a youth pastor, a Sunday school teacher etc. but still not saved and therefore an illegal immigrant in the kingdom of God. If our church life and Christian journey did not begin with an encounter with Jesus where, by the power of the Holy Spirit and the understanding of the message of the cross, you were convicted of our sins, we repented of them and by faith called on Jesus to save us then we may have entered the kingdom via the wrong gate. There is time yet to correct our error if indeed we are in the kingdom illegally. If we discover we are inside illegally but make no effort to correct this then we are thieves indeed. Remember that there is a time set for the gate to close so hurry. Jesus said, Luke 13:25 “When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,..” Strive/Make every effort/Work hard, go back to your foundations, get back to the gate you entered through, check it out and make sure it was the correct and acceptable point of entry. Be sure and see to it that you entered through the narrow gate who is Jesus our Lord and if not repent (make the change) now. Still a pig?

Continued from page 11

You realised what’s rubbish Be assured of this, there is no gaining Christ until we recognise that all our earthly achievements, pedigree and possessions are like filth when compared with the excellence of knowing Christ. A person who has truly repented and turned to God will quickly and willingly give up the pride of such past achievements and associations realising their worthlessness. If one struggles to let go their past life as Lot’s wife struggled to let go of Sodom then this would be evidence that something is wrong. Paul says, Philippians 3:7-8 “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish *[and I easily let them go as if they were stink and nasty], that I may gain Christ..” The gift of repentance is the gift of recognition, the opening of our eyes where we recognise that what we wallowed in was mud and what we lapped up was vomit. The sins we used to love and indulge in becomes so repulsive that we

gladly turn from them to follow Jesus our newly found treasure and love. Romans 6:2 “How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” Peter speaking of unsaved Christians who only had a form of Godliness but never experienced true repentance said “..it has happened to them according to the true proverb: ‘A dog returns to his own vomit,’ and, ‘a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.’” (2 Peter 2:22) According to 2 Corinthians 7:10 repentance borne out of godly sorrow is genuine and will lead to salvation.

Repent or you will all likewise perish. Jesus said some things in His response to the news about some Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices and those who the tower fell on that most would find shocking. The first shock had to do with Jesus’ lack of political correctness as He did not mourn their death, He did not say He was sorry to hear about it, He did not ask about their now fatherless children, He did not mention consoling their families but said, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they

suffered such things? 3I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:1) The faithless, unrepentant person will die in similar fashion. How did they die? Suddenly, without sanctity, and without God’s intervention as if their lives were not worth much to God. Back then people questioned the existence and character of God using the same reasoning as we do today. If there is a loving God why did He not intervene and stop innocent people from dying such horrible deaths? A second shock comes when we hear Jesus’ parable about the barren fig tree. Here Jesus seems to be telling us that the fruitless falls in the same category as those sinners who experience sudden horrible deaths. It is made clear that the extent of one’s sin is not what matters but whether one has repented of them. The notorious murderer who, in our estimation, deserves a horrible death is no different, in God’s estimation, from the unsaved ‘Christian’ who may be a ‘goody two shoes’ but is unrepentant and is therefore unfruitful.

Being able to repent is a gift that is more precious than money because the person who can repent will be saved but the one who cannot, will be dammed. Yes, repentance is a gift that must be granted by God. 2 Timothy 2:25 “..if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,..” No human effort can bring repentance, only the conviction of the Holy Spirit can lead a person into repentance. In a time when many are praying for health, wealth and prosperity I would advice that we pray for brokenness. That God gives us a heart that can be broken before Him when He, by His Spirit, convicts us of sins. Pray that He blesses us with brokenness that will, in times of conviction, bring us into a deep sorrow that will then result in repentance. This is priceless in these the end of days. *My words are in parenthesis [...]

Think!

Lot, made a lot of mistakes

L

By C. Richard McCaw

ot was a believer who had made a terrible decision based upon what he saw, the possibility of “financial prosperity” if he mingled with worthless sinners, traded with them, became equal business partners, let his daughters flirt and entertain them in his living room. He was like many who listened to the prosperity teachers on Christian television and saw dollar signs before their eyes; scripture tells us the agony of soul he went through. Every day he was being annoyed, made miserable by the filthy conversation (an Elizabethan word meaning ‘behaviour’). All they could talk about was ‘sex,’ ‘fashion,’ ‘tattooing the body,’ ‘the latest chariot from the chariot store’... the latest entertainment at the arena downtown...He could not stand the continual fleshly discussions that left God out...the illegal carryings on...But he was described as “tzadique” (Hebrewfor a just righteous man) caught up in an unrighteous situation. But the Lord knew how to deliver him. That is a different situation than if he were happy and content with living among wicked people. Lot became vexed EVERY SINGLE DAY OF HIS LIFE with SIN. That is the attitude of a true believer. He made a big mistake. He thought a believer could fellowship with unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14-18) IMPOSSIBLE! No true believer can fellowship with unbelievers and be comfortable and happy! He compromised! He was evidently an immature believer, a spiritual baby who had not grown up to maturity (perfection - teleios). He had not ‘grown in grace’ nor in the intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ as Peter encourages us (2 Peter 3:18). He was too busy with business transactions to spend quality time in prayer and the Word. In the end he lost everything, along with the corruption that seeped into his daughters’ souls that could make them sleep with their own father and birth two horrible, wicked nations that later gave Israel so much trouble. True believers pay for their mistakes by bearing the consequences. God punishes them because He loves them and they are His genuine children and He is committed to bringing them to perfection. (Heb 12:6-11).

Morning by Morning Devotional Morning by Morning Devotional is written with you in mind. Our hope is that you will find it helpful in getting your day started on the right path, with the Lord. The daily thoughts cover a range of topics and will give you something to think about keeping your mind on the Lord throughout the day. Isaiah 26:3 says, “you (the Lord) will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Build your faith each morning, keep your mind on him and let his peace keep you all day. It is a good idea to seek the Lord first thing in the morning so you can begin your day with him. It seems as if David the man after God’s own heart used to do the same. He writes in Psalm 5:3 “My voice you shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to you, and I will look up.” The devotional displayed here only covers a season or two of the year so you will need to look out for the follow on books to complete the year. We do not put dates to each devotion because we want it to be a book that can be reused or passed on to others and not just discarded because the dates suggest that the book is obsolete.
