Activity. What is producing all this activity? Well, quite a few things actually — an exodus to rural areas, a newly found ability to work from anywhere, civil unrest, political strife, Presidential election uncertainty, and escaping high taxes…

just to name a few. But it’s not just about running from something, it’s also about a “flight to quality.” That age-old adage of fleeing from risk to safety. From what has been adequate to what is desired. When visiting with folks, I often hear, “It sure seems like a lot of activity going on out here.” THERE IS! It’s possible I’ve been as busy as I currently am through my 20 years in this business, but I don’t remember when. You see activity everywhere in Cordillera Ranch these days and it takes on many forms. In spite of a slowdown in sales during March and April of 2020, home and lot sales have now rebounded so much during the summer that we’re back on par with 2019 for the year. Home inventory is as tight as we’ve seen in several years with only 25 homes currently on the market (there are approximately 900 homes in Cordillera Ranch), and we’ve recently established a new baseline for resale

BACK AT THE RANCH

TOBY AND GINGER BARNES Toby and I searched the Texas Hill Country from San Marcos to Kerrville and San Antonio to Burnet to find the perfect retirement home. Our requirements were pretty simple: 1) close to our son in Katy, Texas, 2) acreage to accommodate a horse, 3) a studio large enough to house

my longarm quilting machine, 4) remote yet close enough to civilization (airport, fabric store, medical facilities) and 5) a good area to walk dogs. We found all that and more in our dream property in Cordillera Ranch. Our home met all our requirements and was situated in lush gardens

with lovely courtyards. Little did we know, the best was yet to come! While we were familiar with the amenities of Cordillera Ranch, we learned the value of the community. We have made fast friends at Wine Socials, met great folks walking dogs, and enjoy Guadalupe River kayaking and tubing. So far, we have experienced all of The Clubs except Tennis, and it’s on our list! We have joined an inclusive neighborhood where people embrace having fun and caring for each other. The community we didn’t expect has been a great surprise! The life we lead at Cordillera Ranch is an interesting yet different pace from our 30+ year careers in the aerospace industry. During my career, I developed, delivered and operated weapons, fighter planes, bombers, the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle and Space Launch System rocket. Toby worked on many of the same projects in technology and configuration management. We have enjoyed sharing our little piece of heaven with visitors. I call it “The Rocket B Ranch” in a nod to my career, and Toby calls it “The Rock-It B Ranch” in a nod to his musical proclivities. You may call it either, and many call it “Paradise.” I couldn’t agree more!

RICHARD AND KAREN JACKSON We have been Cordillera Ranch residents since January, 2020, moving from Clear Lake, Texas where we spent our careers supporting NASA’s human spaceflight mission. Richard was a Flight Director for Space Shuttle operations before moving to industry supporting NASA programs. I worked my entire career in Mission Operations supporting both the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs. We both love the Texas Hill Country and wanted to retire here in a community with a golf course. After our tour of Cordillera Ranch, we knew we had found our new home. Cordillera had a great golf course, but offered so much more than golf. The Clubs provided a range of activities that addressed our other interests and hobbies — it was the perfect fit — a beautiful setting for our new home as well as all of the amenities. We are both golfers so we are enjoying all aspects of golf here at the Ranch including the CWGA, the MGA and Couples golf. We have also participated in other activities including wine dinners, fitness, shooting and Gold Rush. We are looking forward to kayaking the Guadalupe and trying out Pickle Ball. What we are enjoying the most, however, is the new friendships we have developed and the welcoming environment at The Clubs.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE? Being given the opportunity to manage the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association. The unique nature of Cordillera presents so many opportunities to develop fantastic relationships with property owners and I am humbled to be a part of the Cordillera team.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH? Managing the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association provides new challenges every day. Each day provides different opportunities to be a resource and serve our property owners. I enjoy the opportunity we are given to connect with our property owners.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? I prefer to spend most of my time outdoors, camping, fishing, etc. My grandfather is an avid outdoorsman and growing up, that is how we spent time together. The Texas natives met at Stephen F. Austin State University. She grew up in Houston and Dallas while he hails from Longview. The college sweethearts married soon after graduation where he double majored in biology and business and she studied fashion merchandising and marketing. Thanks to a fraternity brother’s encouragement, Ward landed a job with Abbott Laboratories and off the young couple went to Shreveport, Louisiana, putting the Lonestar state in their rearview mirror. Ward’s career began working in the diagnostic’s division in sales. “I was very fortunate being just one of two recent graduates in the training program.” With hard work and time, his path led him to positions interfacing with laboratories, marketing, commercial operations and ultimately General Manager, overseeing regional and national accounts. It also took the couple, and eventually their children, to live in a multitude of cities: Dallas, Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit and back to Chicago. By the time they were in Chicago for the second time, all three sons — Brandon, Christopher and Sean — were moving back


to Texas, with all three graduating from North Texas State University, far from their parents in the windy city. “They have all settled in Flower Mound, with other family also living in the Dallas area. Dallas has always seemed like our home away from home,” says Ward. Not only were their children in Texas, so were Beverly’s parents and Ward’s parents, his brother and wife, his sister and her family. The pull of family and Texas were strong. In early 2016, Ward learned of a position with BioBridge Global, a San Antonio-based nonprofit client he had worked with for a long time. “The prospect and chance to work with outstanding people came together,” says Ward. With the job in hand they needed to find a home. “When we were considering moving back to Texas, it was important to find a community and a house that would allow us to have my parents live with us,” Beverly said. “We also wanted to be close to my parents,” Ward said. Ward’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Edward H. Carter Jr., had retired to San Antonio over 14 years earlier and lived in the Stone Oak area. Beverly led the home search, originally seeking something inside 1604. “I’d go out and just drive around and I luckily stumbled on Boerne and Cordillera Ranch. It was a chance find! Once I saw the neighborhood, I fell in love!” says Beverly. They found a home with room for her parents and a lot that met their requirements: space on either side and acreage behind them. In October 2016 they all moved in. Beverly says, “My parents, Jane and James Horrell, are now both over 91 years old, and doing well, but we needed a small and supportive community for them. Boerne and Cordillera have been wonderful!” Ward concurs, “Being close to my parents, and being able to have Beverly’s parents move in with us, brought all of us back together again.” While his parents both passed in 2017 and 2018, he is thankful for what they shared, saying, “The time we had with my parents was a real blessing.” After a 32-year career, Ward retired from Abbott and accepted a position at BioBridge: to lead their laboratory operations team with BioBridge Global as the Chief Operating Officer, for QualTex Laboratories which is also the testing lab for South Texas Blood and Tissue, along

with GenCure. “This has been a very rewarding opportunity for me to use my work experience to support a critical part of the healthcare service in San Antonio. Blood and blood components, plasma, tissue collections and cellular therapy products are critical to the health and wellbeing of residents of South-Central Texas. Being part of helping to save lives, well, I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than that,” says Ward. The scope encompasses overseeing donated product safety testing, including testing to identify people who have had exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19 who may be eligible to become COVID convalescent plasma donors. QualTex also provides testing for donated source plasma, donated tissue and organs, and performs safety testing for area military bases and blood banks. Emphasizing the importance of the life-saving nature of his job, Ward says, “I really enjoy the work and honoring the people involved. Great respect and

care are needed for donors and recipients. It’s a human giving to another human.” That aid includes corneas in coordination with the San Antonio Eye Bank and organizations for tissue. “We prefer to work with biomedical organizations that are using the donated tissues within our region here in Texas, but we also know that tissues are in short supply worldwide, so we do work with organizations outside our region, and in some cases outside the U.S. After we recover tissue, we work with organizations that process the donation into therapeutic products for use in hospitals — for orthopedic surgeries, skin grafts, heart surgeries and more. In fact, one tissue donor can help as many as 75 patients,” explains Ward. Serving as a board member through The Blood & Tissue Center Foundation, a part of the BioBridge Global organization, Beverly shares the mission. “We are always trying to bring awareness to our community on just how critical blood and plasma donations are for Boerne and San Antonio area patients,” she says. It is also personal, adding, ‘’I’m sure everyone has been affected in some way from COVID-19. I lost a dear friend from it and encourage anyone that has recovered to please donate their plasma to help others in need. If giving blood is one thing that I personally can do, then I’m all for it! There is not a substitute for blood, and other people’s lives depend on it.” Her service includes working on the annual Red and White Ball, a fundraising event that supports lifesaving programs, services and equipment needs, including new blood mobiles and establishing the Texas Cord Blood Bank. Though it was cancelled due to the pandemic this year, Beverly is looking ahead, “Mark your calendar for November 13, 2021 at the Tobin Center for next year’s gala.” The Carter family grew since the move, with the two eldest sons marrying in 2016. In addition, they have since made Ward and Beverly grandparents. Brandon and wife Alexandra are parents to sons Jameson and Rory, while Christopher and Allison have a daughter named Sloan and are expecting another baby in October. Soon brother Sean will marry his fiancée Katie, the daughter of one of Ward’s high school classmates, in Horseshoe Bay in September. The future is full of family. While their sons like to join them for a round of golf, or at the Gun Club shooting clays and skeet, the grandchildren love the Club pool, so there will always be more fun times. It was part of the plan. “Cordillera Ranch and the Club are a big draw!” says Beverly. “It’s good to be in Texas.”

PGA PRO LIFE

Being a golf professional comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations, but also some exceptional benefits that make for a fruitful career. By Robert Rodriguez :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle

There are certain nicknames in golf that have a certain prestige associated with it.These monikers are hard-earned and demonstrate that golfers often dubbed them command respect every time they tee it up. Stick. Money. Player. There are countless others that highlight how good of a golfer one is. Yet, when someone is called a “pro” there’s some extra clout attached to it — like a badge of honor or achieving Tier One status among the playing membership at the club. For those on the Cordillera Ranch golf staff who are called pros, the name is more than just an official title. Being called a professional is symbolic of the passion they have for their profession and helping make the game more enjoyable for the members. “Golf is such an interesting sport because it connects people from different backgrounds, tax brackets and cultures,” says Director of Golf Corey Roberson. “My job is simple, to make sure that everyone who wants to play golf has a good time.” For Roberson, his passion stems from being around the game throughout his childhood. His father operated Van Zandt Country Club, so Roberson saw firsthand what life is like as a golf professional. The early morning alarms, the long hours, spending holidays and weekends at work versus home.

“Growing up, we ate our Thanksgiving meal in my dad’s golf shop and celebrated birthdays on the nearest Monday,” he said. “It just seemed normal to me.” One aspect of the job that resonated with Roberson was how his father built relationships and positively enhanced the culture at the club. Striking up a conversation in passing, playing with members on the course, making sure everyone has a pleasing experience either in the golf shop or on the course — those friendly attributes are just as effective today for Corey. “When I told him I wanted to get into the golf business he said, ‘make sure you maintain your connection to the game,’” Corey remembers. “That’s how you get to know people. The golf business is really a people business around the game of golf.” Director of Instruction Bryan Gathright has made a nice ca-


reer out of helping people through golf. Gathright started in the golf shop as an assistant at such noted clubs as PGA West and Oak Tree, where he was averaging 48 hours per week in the shop. He also was teaching a lot even though “teaching was not allowed during work time.” Yet, being on the range talking swing planes and impact zones became his passion. He came to Texas to work alongside his mentor, the legendary Harvey Penick, before member Buddy Cook brought him to San Antonio to start up the La Cantera Golf Academy. Gathright came to Cordillera Ranch in 2016, and can be often seen on the practice tee or inside The Golf Performance Center. He’s still hustling — 12-hour days are typical — but professionally he’s never been happier. “I’m the most excited I’ve ever been as an instructor,” says Gathright, who currently teaches 2020 Southern Amateur champion Mac Meissner, two-time Texas Junior Amateur champion Zach Heffernan and 2020 Texas State Open champ Mitchell Meissner. “The long hours don’t bother me — I view that as what you have to do to be successful. People pay good money for my time, so they deserve 100% of my time.” Both Roberson and Gathright played college golf, and like many wannabe Tour players, found out quick that play-for-pay might not put food on the table. Head golf professional Jacques LeBlanc never sought out a career in playing, but aspired to be a golf professional. He befriended several golf pros growing up and admired what they did for the game. However, LeBlanc chose a different path in becoming a golf professional than Roberson and Gathright. There are two primary pathways that lead one to becoming a PGA member — the PGA Professional Golf Management (PGM) Associate Program and PGA Golf Management University Program. The PGM Associate Program begins with a background check, and then coursework that is broken down into levels and commonly referred to as the apprenticeship. Hopefuls must also pass an online qualifying test that consists of three courses: introduction to PGM and the golf profession, PGA history and constitution, and the Rules of Golf. Then there’s the 36-hole Player Ability Test (PAT). To pass the PAT, one must achieve a 36-hole score within 15 shots of the course rating. According to the PGA of America, fewer than 20% of those taking the PAT achieve a passing score. Currently, Player Development Coach Katie Dillard is a Level 3 apprentice, while both assistants Logan Davis and Michael Hunt are Level 1 apprentices. All three will be PGA members within a few years. The PGA Golf Management University Program is a college

Logan Davis, Katie Dillard and Michael Hunt degree program designed to attract and educate those who aspire to service all aspects of the industry. Offered at 18 universities worldwide, the University Program allows students to earn a degree in such areas as Marketing, Business Administration, Hospitality Administration, Recreation and Park Management, providing them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the golf industry. The only college in Texas to offer this program is Sam Houston State University, where LeBlanc attended. The program, administer by PGA Master Professional Dr. Rich Ballinger, laid the foundation for LeBlanc’s career as a golf professional, and helped him build a strong network of mentors and other golf professionals through required internships. “Through the program I majored in General Business Administration and specialized in the PGA/PGM curriculum,” he says. “This not only consisted of the PGA Education program that all aspiring professionals go through, but included in-class instruction through Sam Houston State to expand upon the PGA’s curriculum. Classes like Turf Grass Management, Entrepreneurship and Retail Management were among the few that helped me enter the golf industry prepared. “The most important part of the program were the required internship experiences,” LeBlanc adds. “I knew early on that private clubs were an avenue I wanted to pursue, but that was solidified during my internship experiences. I would highly recommend this program for anyone looking to pursue a career in any facet of the industry; it is not only for those who are wanting to become club professionals.” Cordillera Ranch is chockfull of PGA golf professionals besides Roberson, Gathright and LeBlanc. Marc DeWall was the head golf professional and director of golf at Cordillera Ranch before

Marc DeWall, Barry Denton and John Kuhry he became the general manager in 2018. Throughout his illustrious career in the golf industry, DeWall has served on numerous committees for the Southern Texas PGA and has been a twotime president. Cordillera Ranch Realty Director of Sales Barry Denton also is a PGA member and was a teaching professional at Oak Hills CC and the head golf coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio before his career in real estate. In addition, Cordillera Ranch Realty’s John Kuhry is a PGA member. All had to endure the long hours and low pay that comes with being a green professional, and all can look at those early experiences as catalysts for their many successes and promotions. The perks of the job also can be sweet for a golf professional — working outdoors, playing golf under the guise of work, no TPS reports or cubicles, and very few cookie-cutter days. “I love the curve balls, even though at times they can catch you off-guard,” LeBlanc says. “The challenge and variety created through the diversity of tasks are extremely entertaining and make the job fun.” As Roberson experienced growing up and LeBlanc is now dealing with as a new dad, the home life is very different for a golf professional. They’re not sliding down the dinosaur at 5 p.m., or spending all weekends and holidays with the family. That can take a toll on the family unless there’s an understanding of what the job entails. “I’m super lucky that my wife, Colleen, understands what it means to work in the service business,” Roberson says. “We had that conversation early in our relationship and she’s always been supportive of me chasing my career because she respects how much it means to me. The spouse must be fully on board and supportive.”

Roberson adds that when he’s interviewing assistants, he always makes it a point to meet the spouse and make sure they understand what it means to work in the golf business. Unfortunately, the hours and effect it has on the family are among several deterrents that push people out of the golf business and into other professions. Gathright has seen it on the teaching side, and makes sure he devotes time in his schedule for himself and his family. He also believes having a mentor helps a budding professional grow and prosper on the job. Gathright had Penick and Roberson had Cameron Doan, the longtime head golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club in Dallas. For LeBlanc, he considers his mentors to be DeWall, Roberson and David Von Hoffmann, the director of golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Bee Cave. These mentors showcase what to hone and master to excel personally, and how make a club or staff thrive once in a leadership role. “I am a strong believer that for an assistant to grind and grow in the business they must maintain their love for playing and play as much as they can,” LeBlanc says. “This combined with having a strong mentor is the key to growing in the golf industry. If those two things are prevalent, I believe aspiring assistants can succeed in this industry.” “Doan would always say, ‘you have to fully understand what you have and constantly try to make it better,’” Roberson adds. “I think that’s a great mindset for any leader. To be a great coach or leader, you must be an efficient communicator — regardless of industry, but especially in the golf business. You must clearly communicate to your team, boss, membership, and owners or board. Also, the ability to relate to each member in a unique way is a key skill for the person running a golf operation. The most successful leaders can get that skill to trickle down through their team.” For Roberson, Gathright and LeBlanc, being called a pro pays homage to the physical and mental grinds they endured to get where they’re at today, and the passion that still burns in them to make golf a pleasurable experience for everyone they meet. “It’s really no different than any other industry — you have to put in your time and work your way up,” Roberson says. “If you focus on the short-term, this business isn’t for you, but if you love the game — it can be very rewarding. You must be motivated by play and potential. Play refers to loving what you do. I love playing the game and being around the people who play it. The potential part is knowing that you are working towards something. “If you lose that passion, the business just becomes a job.”

This summer, during a four-week stretch, four Texans added their names to some of the most elite trophies in golf. McClure Meissner won the Southern Amateur. His brother Mitchell Meissner prevailed at the Texas State Open. Zach Heffernan claimed the Texas Junior Amateur. And Trey Bosco hoisted the H.L. Edwards Memorial Trophy at the 111th Texas Amateur. All four talented competitors share one important thing in common. They’re all guided by the same man.

Bryan Gathright, 62, started coaching golf in 1988 following a five-year stint playing professionally. Over the years, he’s worked with many high-profile players including four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III and 2016 PGA Champion Jimmy Walker. Though he’s seen success with touring pros, Gathright spends most of his days now in Boerne, Texas, at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, where he primarily works with junior and amateur golfers. Gathright currently coaches about 400 golfers who range in age from 10 to 82. He’s passionate about their development and seeing his students succeed. The Meissner brothers, Heffernan and Bosco are just a few of the talented pupils Gathright instructs; however, their four wins in four weeks is an unprecedented highlight in Gathright’s 32-year coaching career. “At no point in time have I had four different players win such prestigious events in such a short span of time,” Gathright said. “As a coach, it is my responsibility to make certain that they are both prepared and ready to win, but for four different players to have such incredible success in such a short span is impossible to put into words.” It started with McClure (Mac) Meissner, a senior at South-

ern Methodist University. The 25th-ranked amateur golfer in the world carded seven birdies in the final round of the 114th Southern Amateur at Maridoe Golf Club on July 18. His closing 6-under 66 was enough to erase the six-shot deficit he faced to begin the day. Meissner was tied with David Perkins of East Peoria, Ill., through 72 holes at 7-under 281. On the first suddendeath playoff hole, Meissner’s routine par clinched the victory. “I started off really well, and that kind of just set the tone for my round,” Meissner said following his win. “I’ve been struggling with finishing rounds. I just told myself just to keep being aggressive and keep giving myself looks.” Meissner’s victory adds his name to a long list of renowned Southern Amateur past champions that include Justin Leonard, Bob Tway and Ben Crenshaw. Though this is the biggest win of the 21-year-old’s young golf career, he’s been a grinder since Gathright started working with him eight years ago. “I can’t speak enough about his competitiveness,” Gathright said. “No one hates losing more than Mac. He’s a great driver of the golf ball and has the best short game of anyone I’ve ever worked with.” Eleven days later, Heffernan made his own statement. He carded rounds of 66-73-70 at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Ram Rock Course to win back-to-back Texas Junior Amateur titles. The 2021 Baylor University commit became only the third player in the tournament’s 94-year history to claim consecutive victories. “It means so much to be one of three people to have won the Texas Junior Amateur back-to-back,” Heffernan said. “This year was really special to have all my family on the 18th green and watch me win. It’s still crazy to me the last time someone did this was in 1994-95.” Gathright has been working with the two-time Texas Junior Amateur champion since he was 10 years old. Over the past six years, he has continued to watch Heffernan develop into a better and more confident player. “The one thing about Zach is he loves bigger moments,” Gathright said. “Whether it’s a statewide championship or coming down the stretch in a high school event, he loves to win. He plays his best in high-pressure moments.”


Just two days following the Texas Junior Amateur, Mitchell (Mac’s older brother) won the Texas State Open at The Cascades Club in Tyler. Mitchell, who played collegiately for Rice University and won the 109th Texas Amateur in 2018, turned professional following his graduation in the same year. Even though he had some early success on the PGA Tour Latinioamérica, Meissner was still winless as a professional entering the 50th Texas State Open. His rounds of 67-65-63-66 to post 19-under secured his first win in the pro ranks by one stroke. “I knew there were going to be a lot of low scores and that no one else was going to let up at the top of the leaderboard,” Meissner said after the round. “Winning this is pretty big. Just gaining confidence and learning that I can play under pressure and win when I’m presented the opportunity was awesome.” Like Mac, Mitchell has had Gathright in his corner since he was a young junior golfer. They’ve built a unique relationship over the years as Mitchell has transitioned from junior golf to collegiate golf and now professional golf. “I’ve tried to remind him to stay patient,” Gathright said. “He’s a great a player, but there is a difference between amateur and professional golf. He’s got so much potential and it’s great to see him finding that confidence.” Two weeks, three players, three wins. But the run was not over. Bosco, who lives in Austin and started working with Gathright in June, was struggling with his game throughout the quarantine. The rising freshman at Baylor was showing frustration; however, things started to change two weeks before the 111th Texas Amateur. “He was a little lost with his game,” Gathright said. “But he stuck with what we were working on, and he goes out and shoots 67 to win his qualifier for the State Am.” Bosco’s 4-under 67 at Lighthouse Country Club earned him a spot in the 132-player starting field for the Texas Amateur at Boot Ranch. Without any expectations, the 18-year-old carded rounds of 72-71-67 to find himself tied for second place and two shots off the lead with 18 holes to play. “I called him [Bosco] the night before the final round,” Gathright said. “I try to make a point to always talk to my players when they are in the hunt. I told him, look you’re 18 years old, no one is expecting you to win. Just go out there and play your game and I think you will. I always want to instill the belief that my players can win.” The pep talk got Bosco believing, too. In the final round, he carded six birdies including three straight on holes 15, 16 and 17 to post 5-under 279 for the championship and claim a onestroke victory. “At the beginning of this summer I was struggling badly. I didn’t know which way the ball was going and it was frustrating,” Bosco said. “A future teammate referred me over to Bryan

and ever since then it’s been a very fun process. There were a lot of tough days working on the things Bryan had me doing, but I always knew in the back of my mind it would click. Sure enough at the Texas Am everything came together and I played some of the best golf I have ever played.” Mac, Heffernan, Mitchell and Bosco’s victories are all individual accomplishments. And Gathright will be the first to tell you they are all extremely hard-working and outstanding young men who deserved those titles. However, it’s no question there’s a common denominator. “Bryan’s great at building relationships with players and will go out of his way to help you fix any issues you have,” Mitchell said. “He works from sun up to sun down. I can’t tell you how many times I have been at a loss with my game and texted him ‘Hey, I need some help,’ and for him to respond, ‘I’ll see you at 7 a.m. tomorrow.’” It’s Gathright’s dedication, commitment and passion that stands out to those who work with him. Heffernan’s mother, Dana, explains Zach has not only improved as a golfer but also a person. “There are many things that make Bryan a special coach,” Dana said. “But from a parent’s perspective, his positive demeanor and disposition are a great fit. He has encouraged Zach since Day One and supported his big goals. I love that he is always so confident.” As for Gathright, he isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon. He’s coaching many talented young players from across the state, in addition to his four most recent champions. “My goal is that my players improve and get better every time they come see me,” Gathright said. “I recently told my wife, I am more excited now about the group of players I am coaching than I ever have before. I know their potential and it makes me work harder knowing how good these players can be.” Bryan Gathright is the Director of Instruction at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in Boerne. Maria Sayers is an avid golfer, sometimes playing twice a day during these stay-close-to-home pandemic days. She is a supporter of women’s golf at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, and a member of the Cordillera Women’s Golf Association, where she plays currently with a 6 handicap. James and Maria Sayers and Doyle and Yana Dommert play together often. “We love playing with couples! It builds strong relationships as a community,” says Maria. The foursome were together on the course on July 25th when Maria shot her first even par round. She needed a birdie on hole 18 to shoot a 72 (even par), and her drive was about 100 yards from the green. Her second shot skirted the bunker, bounced up on the green and rolled out to approximately 25 feet from the hole. Maria holed that putt for a birdie which secured the even par of 72. “Great fun and a great day for Maria! It was beautiful to watch,” says Yana of her friend’s victory.

CONGRATS TO ZACH HEFFERNAN AND JACOB KING Zach Heffernan, a three-time Cordillera Ranch Junior Champion, captured his second straight Texas Junior Amateur title making him the third player in the 94-year history to win backto-back. He shot rounds of 66-73-70 to finish at 4 under-par and win by 1 shot over three other juniors. He also finished 2nd this summer in the Maridoe Junior Invitational and will be playing in The Players Invitational at TPC Sawgrass on September 3rd. Zach is a senior at Champion High School where

he maintains a 4.0 and will attend Baylor University next year to play golf. Jacob King, another a Cordillera Ranch Junior, and senior at Champion High School, finished T-20 with rounds of 75-7372 in the Texas Junior Amateur. With an equally impressive resume, Jacob finished 3rd, 4th and 6th at the Legends Junior Tour Tournaments this past year and his best finish nationally was 9th at the AJGA Bob Estes Junior Championship (67/67). Both boys play Champion High School Golf where their team placed 2nd at 5A State in 2019 as sophomores, and were poised to win in 2020 until their season was cut short. On the statewide Junior Golf Scoreboard, Zach is currently ranked 3rd in the class of 2021 in Texas and Jacob is 12th. Congratulations to both, and here’s to a State Championship this year!

WEDDINGS The celebration of marriage reflects a couple’s love, commitment and tradition, and their desire to share their joy with family and friends. Kristen and Ben Beyer originally planned a May wedding at the Club, only to postpone due to the pandemic. Their vision was to celebrate with family and friends while enjoying all of the amenities they love at the Club, and support local Boerne vendors for flowers, photography, rentals and such. 1976 for many of us was a great year. Rocky was the #1 movie; the Concorde started service; Apple Computer Company was formed, and our country celebrated its Bicentennial year. Forty-four years ago, in the world of wine, there were just three categories: the good stuff (French), the very good stuff (also French), and everything else. Few doubted that anything could be finer than the vines in Burgundy and Bordeaux, and those at the upper end of wine snobbery were unshakable Francophiles. At the time, California wine was still an unknown in the wine world. Robert Mondavi founded his eponymous winery just 10 years earlier. Wine lists were heavily founded on what we call today Old-World wines, with perhaps a couple of California wines. And then an event on May 24, 1976 — a singular, notable event that would come to be known by the mythical name “The Judgment of Paris” — dramatically changed the way wines were seen and sought forever after. This was the day that has gone down in the wine history books that changed everything for California and the wine world. Two Napa Valley wines — Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon — prevailed in a blind tasting competition between French and American wines. At the annual event, 11 judges at the Paris Tasting (nine French, one British and one American) decreed a California wine as the winner in both the red and white wine categories. It is not that California wines suddenly became regarded as better than French ones, but the tasting’s results proved that California wines could compete. They were suddenly, officially, good. There is a great family film I recently watched — the most familiar version of the Judgment of Paris story, told in the 2008

One of the greatest amenities that Cordillera Ranch has to offer is its parks and trail system that include access to the Guadalupe River and the spring fed creeks on the Ranch. HANDGUN LICENSE AND TRAINING

When the COVID-19 crisis hit us in early spring, I didn’t realize the impact it would have on our outdoor recreation programming at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. Like most businesses, we had to navigate the concerns of keeping our staff and patrons safe while trying to offer some services that members and their guests could still partake in. Along with the COVID-19 crisis came social unrest, widespread protest and civil discord across the country. A bi-product of this was an increased interest at Cordillera Ranch to get trained on how to safely carry and use a handgun. During the past eight years, we have offered the concealed carry course and have had over 500 participants. When we offered the course in May of 2020, we had more interest in the course than ever! Over the past three months, we have sent over 40 people through the Texas License to Carry course as well as many more through our Introduction to Handguns course.

Texas has been issuing conceal carry permits since 1995. The law was initially introduced following a 1991 mass shooting at a Luby’s in Killeen. In 2007, the Texas Legislature expanded the state’s Castle Doctrine with the Stand Your Ground Law. It cleared the way for gun owners to use deadly force if they feel threatened — not only in their homes, but also if they’re in their vehicles or places of business. Seven years later, in 2015, gun rights activists scored two more big victories. Texas lawmakers passed the open carry law, giving handgun owners the option to show their holstered firearms in many public places. They voted to lift the ban on concealed weapons on college campuses, which has been in place since Vietnam war protests in the 1960s. My opinion on the recent rise in interest to obtain a License to Carry permit is that citizens are concerned about safety. People’s primary motivation for purchasing firearms has shifted from hunting and sports to primarily self-defense and self-protection. On September 1, 2017, a new law in Texas went into effect that


reduced the first-time fee for a license to carry from $140 to $40 and the renewal fee from $70 to $40. A License to Carry permit is valid in Texas for five years. Upon signing the new law into effect, Governor Abbot said, “The right to bear arms is something that is synonymous with the state of Texas. We are proud to expand the right to bear arms by lowering the cost of what you have to pay in order to get a license to carry. Texans’ ability to bear arms is going to be even bolder today than it’s ever been before.” In response to the increased demand, we have developed a list of course dates for the remainder of 2020. Please remember it’s important to have a basic understanding of handguns prior to taking the License to Carry course. Also, please remember to buy ammunition well before your class because handgun ammunition around the country is in high demand and low stock. Our instructor for these courses is Dan Mosley. tion and hand-to-hand combat. Kevin will focus the hand-tohand combat in a few areas: pain compliance, full-on striking skills and stand-up weapon retention at its best. We also train in edged, blunted and improvised weapon use. We use real world scenarios — sitting at a table, in your car, standing at a bar… you name it. Our improvised weapons include using a magazine, towel, ink pen, cell phone, a cup of coffee… you get the idea. ANY item is a weapon of self-defense, IF it gets down to that in an altercation. Our ground fighting is based on “getting back up” FAST! These are real-world skills for real-world application, NOT for competition! BREWING in BOERNE By Claudia Alarcón

The United States has a long and complicated history when it comes to craft brewing. Modern U.S. craft beer history began in the 1960s, followed by an increasing popularity of homebrewing in the 1970s and the rise of microbreweries in the 1990s, which were legalized in Texas in 1993.Today, there are about 7,000 microbreweries across the country, including the Texas Hill Country and Boerne, home to a thriving craft brewery scene. With three gold and three silver medals from international competitions, DODGING DUCK BREWHAUS (www.dodgingduck.com) offers a wide range of core and seasonal beers. “We typically have four brews on tap from our tanks but occasionally we have as many as six,” says Keith Moore, owner of the popular brewery. “We’ve tried to always have a variety of beers to please every palate.”

Brewmaster Ian Richmond almost always offers an India Pale Ale, but the recipe changes with every 10-barrel batch produced. The other three taps vary depending on what’s brewing. “We usually have a few batches of Duck and the Giant Peach Ale and HoneyDuckle Ale every summer, along with our Pine Road Pilsner and Pico de Pato Mexican Lager,” says Moore. Every fall they brew two batches of Ducktoberfest! and late fall usually brings the popular Quackinator Doppelbock and Zaner’s Old Geezer Pecan Brown Ale. Richmond occasionally makes barrel-aged beers, including the newly released Down the Hatch Green Chile Ale, aged in a Devil’s River Whiskey barrel for about nine months before they tapped at the brewery’s 18th anniversary celebration on August 1, 2020. “Periodically we make cask conditioned ales which we serve at cellar temperature — around 55°F,” says Moore. Moore says that craft brewing was coming along great in the Hill Country, with breweries popping up regularly, until COVID-19 hit. Since then, brewpubs with significant food operations have generally fared better than breweries without. “Our production has increased significantly over our history, but since we sell 100% of our production on site, our beer production has grown with our food sales,” he says. Dodging Duck also started canning small volumes of beer last year, and this has proven to be very popular with the current big increase in takeout and curbside sales. Nearby, a group of homebrewing enthusiasts comprised of coworkers, friends and family members opened TUSCULUM BREWING CO. (www.facebook.com/tusculumbrewingcompany) in 2019 in the landmark Bergmann Lumber Company, along Boerne’s Hill Country Mile. The lively brewery makes 12 specialty and seasonal beers that rotate through the year, with a focus on lagers and Belgians. “We usually try to have both our Belgian-style Big Tex Blonde and our Honeybee Blonde — a more hoppy but still light and easy-to-drink blonde — on tap or in bottles,” says co-owner Paige Matthews. “We always have a dark beer, whether it’s a porter, stout or brown ale, as well as a lager and an IPA. For our lagers and IPAs, we have a handful of recipes that may be available at any time depending on what our brewer is in the mood to make.”

Although they don’t brew seasonal beers per se, they always rotate what they have to offer, changing their summery Berliner Weisse by adding different fruits to the base recipe, and serving an Oktoberfest beginning in late September or early October. CIBOLO CREEK BREWING CO. (www. cibolocreekbrewing.com) brewer Ty Wolosin likes to listen to his customers when it comes to big batch brews. They have two beers that never change — Creekside IPA and Boerne Blonde — alongside a wheat beer that changes every two months (Hefeweizen, American Wheat, Dunkel, Wit), a darker tap (Oktoberfest, Porter, Stout, Amber), and one seasonal (Pale Ale, DIPA, NEIPA, Tropical IPA). They always offer at least two small batch beers which change weekly. “For small batches, I pretty much let myself, and our assistant brewer, Beck, do what we want,” says Wolosin. “My favorite thing to do is brew with a story in mind. An example is the New Mexico Hunting Trip IPA. My idea was to brew a beer that made you feel like you were in the pine

Dodging Duck Brewhaus and fir trees of New Mexico. I used piney hops, juniper berries and spruce extract. It smelled like the forest!” Another example is the Retired Space Commander, a New England IPA brewed with Galaxy Hops and space dust (edible gold dust). Current seasonal beers include the recently released Lost Mail Pale Ale, as well as an American Wheat that will change to a pseudo Wheat Lager at the end of this month, before going back to the Hefeweizen for the fall. The Oktoberfest was brewed early this year and will stay until the end of October. Around Thanksgiving they’ll release fan favorite Streetside DIPA, and small batch enthusiasts can

expect everything from Milkshake IPAs to Belgians, Coffee Stouts, barrel-aged beers and even seltzers. Despite their popularity, Wolosin has not turned seasonal beers into year-round brews. “And I hear about it all the time! IS THERE ONE SUCCESSFUL SALES STORY THAT STANDS OUT? A family was living in Maui, and they stumbled upon us about 90 minutes before they had to go back to the airport. They never had heard about Cordillera Ranch and the guy was a big shooter. They told me that they lived in Maui, had acreage and amazing waterfront views, and I’m wondering why they want to leave paradise for Texas. We had that common bond with shooting, and I was able to develop a wonderful relationship with them. To watch their house be completed was exciting. He has a pistol range in his basement (we referred to it as a bowling alley during construction) and he gave me a membership card he created out of metal to his pistol range. I’m member No. 1 at the “bowling alley.” It was one of my first sales and we’re still good friends today, so it means a lot to me. WHAT’S THE MOST APPEALING ASPECT ABOUT CORDILLERA RANCH? It depends on the individual. Some people come here for the golf; some people come here because they’re equestrian enthusiasts. Some are here for privacy or acreage. A good friend of mine was getting married and we were playing golf prior to his wedding. One guy busted his leg and couldn’t play, so he brought his camera. We were on this par-3, having a good time, and he lays down so he could take a picture of each player as they hit their tee shot. He so happened to get a picture of my hole-in-one. Later, he sent a nice print of it. YOU’VE JUST WON THE MASTERS AND IN ADDITION TO THE PAST WINNERS YOU CAN BRING THREE GUESTS TO THE CHAMPIONS DINNER. WHO WOULD YOU INVITE AND WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE?
