David D’Eon, a council member from the College of Arts and Science, sees the Louis’ Refresh project as a complete effort that will address multiple areas of concern at once.

“There’s two different aspects to the renovations, part of them being that we need to bring the building back up to code, [as] there have been no renovations since 2000, and the other part of it is that, since we’re renovating it, is to give it a bit of a facelift,” D’Eon said.

Money for this project will come from the USSU, which receives most of its funding from student fees, advertising and sales revenue. Emmanauel Barker, USSU vice-president operations and finance, explains

that although the project was not brought to the USC upon initiation, he has been discussing the plan with administration since May 2016.

The initial budget for this project was determined by Strata Development, a university approved contracting and design firm owned in Saskatoon. Their quote was $363,000, and an additional $100,000 was approved by the USC during the meeting held on Jan. 26.

“We decided to ask [Strata] for a quote because of their great portfolio of past projects, … which are stylistically and practically very comparable to the Louis’ Refresh,” Barker said, in an email to the Sheaf.

D’Eon believes that the budget increase approved by the USC was a positive choice.

“I think that was a really good move and a really smart move, because now we can look at things like including furniture in the renovations to give it a more complete feel and also pursuing more sustainable renovations, putting more money into more efficient, long term features,” D’Eon said.

Despite this positive assertion, opinions of council members regarding the plans are divisive. Andriy Prokopchuk, who represents the College of Education, explains that voting to approve the project’s budget felt hasty.

“I didn’t feel comfortable voting on the motion based on the fact that it is a very large sum of money. I felt like I didn’t have enough time to review the information and I felt like it

wouldn’t be responsible of me as a councillor if I didn’t bring that back to my college,” Prokopchuk said.

The primary concern for Prokopchuk and other USC councillors regards USSU Senior Management and the process by which the project was approved.

“I do wish that in the planning development there would have been more transparency and more of a conversation between administration and [the USC] when the planning actually began up until the point where we voted on the motion,” Prokopchuk said.

According to Barker, there are few provisions allotted for Louis’ Pub employees during the slated time of closure, meaning some might be expecting smaller paychecks.

“Our management staff will be training on the new point of sale system. We will have as many employees in [Louis’] Loft as possible.

Some plan to take vacation days and some of our parttime people will be taking time off,” Barker said.

He explains that the timeline for Louis’ Refresh is tentative, but he states that the USSU aims to cause as little inconvenience as possible for students and employees.

“It is our intention to close Louis’ for as short a time as absolutely possible — hopefully in the ballpark of a month on or around May 2017.”

The mission of the Sheaf is to inform and entertain students by addressing those issues that are relevant to life on campus, in the city, or in the province. The newspaper serves as a forum for discussion on a wide range of issues that concern students. Written for students by students, the staff of editors, photographers, and artists collaborate with volunteers as studentjournalists to produce a product with relevance to the university community. With each composition, the Sheaf stays in touch with students on the U of S campus. It provides unique insight to university issues through a student perspective.

commitment to Indigenous students LIAM DELPARTE On Feb. 2 at the Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre, University of Saskatchewan President Peter Stoicheff and Chief Bobby Cameron of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formalizing and cementing a commitment to the learning outcomes of the university’s Indigenous students.

Building on responses to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action and previous agreements to support Indigenous students with the 23 other Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions, this MOU defines a framework for continuous and meaningful dialogue, in which the university president will meet with the FSIN assembly once a year and present a strategy to improve learning outcomes.

Conversely, the chief of the FSIN will come to the university at least once a year to present and discuss strategies with larger university committees, such as the Board of Governors, University Senate and Universi-

ty Council, all of which have student representatives.

Stoicheff explains that the agreement may be best understood as a commitment to hearing input and ensuring future co-operation between the two organizations.

“The university wants to do its best for its Aboriginal students, and to do that we need a lot of advice and information … It would be presumptuous to think that we could do that on our own,” Stoicheff said.

In response to the TRC’s Call to Action, the U of S has committed itself to raising Indigenous student enrollment and retention, with targets of 15 per cent enrollment in undergraduate programs and nine per cent in graduate programs, as well as an increased graduation rate by the year 2020. By signing this memorandum with the FSIN, the university is also affirming that Indigenous voices matter and need to be represented and heard throughout the institution.

Dallas Fiddler, Indigenous Students’ Council president, has already noticed benefits from agreements like the MOU at the university.

“I believe the agreement is a positive step forward not only for our university but also for the future students of this campus. The ISC is being approached by non-Indigenous student groups to have a position allocated for an Indigenous student. The sudden interest stems from agreements like the MOU between the university and FSIN and also the work our university is doing,” Fiddler said, by correspondence with the Sheaf.

Stoicheff stresses that the MOU is a long-term commitment. “[The agreement] commits the university to listening to and receiving that advice and creates a structure that outlives anybody at the university now and anybody at the FSIN now, that commits to that on-going dialogue long into the future,” Stoicheff said.

As part of this commitment, the U of S will be holding an internal forum on Mar. 7 where departments and colleges will present the steps they have taken and the successes they have had in improving Indigenous representation.

8 p.m. at the Gordon OakesRed Bear Student Centre, the Indigenous Graduate Students’ Council will host an event defining Indigenization at the U of S and all students can attend. The event is dedicated to providing a platform for increased student involvement in the university’s efforts to define Indigenization and its integration into curriculum.

Stoicheff sees the university president’s role as a facilitator and promoter of dialogue between the institution and the FSIN and he looks forward to the work ahead.

“This is a very powerful and enormous start. There is a lot of work to be done over many years,” Stoicheff said.

“I am extremely encouraged by the FSIN’s desire to work closely with us and I feel privileged that they want the president of the university to meet with their chiefs and to listen to their chiefs.”

Fiddler agrees with Stoicheff, conveying his support for the memorandum.

“Are we perfect? No. There is much work to be done, and signing agreements like the MOU is how we continue on that path forward.”

Core city students find support at Station 20 West NYKOLE KING In an effort to support and inspire their peers, University of Saskatchewan students have teamed up with Station 20 West to produce animated videos exploring the lived experiences they face as core students.

The animated videos are a part of a project from the U of S Community Outreach and Engagement Office that details the daily struggles of a student who is navigating life in the inner city, at university and at home. In the videos, students discuss the impact of Station 20 West’s services on their lives, including the assistance the organization has provided with education and university admission.

Tania Guertin, a student in her last term of social work through the University of Regina, describes the purpose of the video project and why she felt it was important to share her story.

“One of our project goals is to cultivate empathy on campus, especially around the barriers that student-mothers

experience, and all of us really wanted to show our friends and family what community supports are available and how to use them,” Guertin said, in an email to the Sheaf.

Station 20 West is a organization that works in the downtown core neighbourhood to provide various resources to the community, such as housing and employment, as well as assistance in the areas of food, health and family.

Likewise, the U of S Community Outreach and Engagement Office — a branch of Station 20 West — supports the west side core community, ensuring that there is an opportunity for prospective students to pursue university education and for current students to access learning resources.

Lisa Durocher-Bouvier, a second-year student in the Indian Teacher Education Program in the College of Education, explains the goals of Station 20 West for the Saskatoon core.

“The organizations at Station 20 West want to help people succeed, whether it’s through school, parenting, finding a job or home, or having access to good healthy food. I really hope that more people utilize their services,” Durocher-Bouvier said, in an

In the released video, Shingoose narrates that although she has faced difficulties as a student-mother, she feels that she can be a positive role model for her community.

Guertin states that her experience working on the animation project was very positive, challenging her to see herself and those around her differently.

“I deeply value and feel invested in the project’s message. I’ve gained a strong sense of empowerment through deep and meaningful self-reflection. Also, I want those who are unaware of their oppressive actions to understand how deeply they impact people, families and communities and how much power they have. Being a part of this project has also taught me about my own privileges and how I may be oppressive to others and how I can continue to change my own thoughts and actions toward justice and empathy.”

Dr. Pepper tuition giveaway raises concerns among students and faculty NATASHA HAUSERMANN On. Feb. 3, the Sheaf received a concerned note from a professor at the University of Saskatchewan regarding a tuition giveaway that could negatively affect the health of students.

Posters across campus advertise a U of S exclusive Dr. Pepper tuition giveaway, including six $1,000 prizes.

Each purchase of a 591 millilitre Dr. Pepper comes with a ballot to enter the draw.

The poster indicates that purchasers will increase their chances of winning each time they buy a new Dr. Pepper.

Angela Kalinowski, associate professor in the history department with an interest in food studies and health, feels that this contest is disingenuous and misleading, believing it should not be allowed on campus.

“It encourages [students] to choose sugar-laden drinks on the off-chance that they might win $1,000. I do not think that such contests, which encourage unhealthy behaviours, should be permitted on campus,” Kalinowski said, in an email to the Sheaf.

Alicia Mah, a Peer Health Mentors staff facilitator, also feels that this contest promotes unhealthy behaviour among students. She explains that drinking one Dr. Pepper may not be detrimental but that the contest has objectives that could increase harmful effects on the body.

“It is promoting prolonged consumption of soft drinks, which contain 20 to 40 grams of sugar,” Mah said, in an email to the Sheaf.

“On paper, this seems like a harmless fact, but if you consider that a single sugar cube is 4 grams, drinking one can of soft drink is equal to anywhere from five to 10 sugar cubes worth of sugar.”

According to Mah, longterm consumption of large amounts of sugar can cause weight gain and high blood pressure. She shares the Canadian Diabetes Association’s recommendation for sugar intake. “[They recommend] sugar intake to be limited to approximately 50 grams of sugar per day, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Since sugars are found in other sources, individuals are likely exceeding this recommen-

dation by drinking that can of pop,” Mah said.

Kalinowski believes that this contest conflicts with the U of S wellness framework, announced in November 2016, and that it facilitates an unhealthy amount of sugar intake for students.

“The university has just rolled out a wellness strategy and this seems to fly in the face of promoting good health in students. A 591 millilitre Dr. Pepper has a whopping 64 grams of sugar,” she said.

Patti McDougall, viceprovost teaching and learning, is co-leading the wellness strategy, alongside Cheryl Carver, associate vice-president human resources, which will focus on fostering a healthy mind, body, and life on and off campus.

McDougall also oversees student awards and financial aid, and she is aware of the Dr. Pepper giveaway. However, she was not involved in the decision to host the giveaway on campus and was unable to provide a statement directly addressing the matter. Instead, she outlined the framework of the wellness strategy, which

she hopes to share with the university community soon.

“The wellness framework will encompass the areas of healthy mind, healthy body and healthy life. It is my hope, and highly likely, that the wellness framework and the action plans that are implemented will inform future policies, initiatives and partnerships the university becomes involved in,” McDougall said, in an email to the Sheaf.

As the wellness strategy has no control over the giveaway, Kalinowski recommends that students who do choose to participate in this contest do so in a way that disrupts it with intention.

“If you read the fine print at the bottom of the poster you will see that you cannot be forced to make a purchase to enter a contest.

That is the law in Canada.

You cannot be forced to purchase a Dr. Pepper to enter the contest,” Kalinowski said.

Mah recommends that

students find other ways to attain money for school all together.

“There are other ways to get money for school, such as packing your own lunches, buying your own groceries, applying for bursaries or scholarships, and more,” Mah said. “Know what you are eating or drinking — the nutrition facts label on food products accurately represents what you are going to be having.”

Part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is knowing where to find the health foods and other products that you need. The Sheaf has compiled a guide to finding the options that work for you right here in Saskatoon.

Beginning with the food you eat can be a good first

step down the road to building a healthier lifestyle.

Fresh foods and plenty of vegetables are the foundations of a good diet, so it is useful to know where you can buy fresh foods.

There are options at pretty much every major grocery store for a variety of fruits and vegetables of course, but with the recent movement towards more locally sourced foods, you may prefer to go to a farmer’s market and get your produce closer to home.

One option is the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market, which offers a place for local vendors to sell their wares. These vendors are available from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Sundays and from 8 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Alongside this market, the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market also offers in-house restaurants and a health and specialty store open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Tuesday to Friday and at the same times as the vendors

on the weekends.

As an added convenience for university students, the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union and the U of S Office of Sustainability have partnered with the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market to bring a taste of the market to the U of S. This market is held in upper Place Riel once a month.

For those wishing to attend, the remaining dates for this term are Mar. 16 and Apr. 6 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

However, this is not the only option for fresh foods on campus, as the USSU Food Centre also provides fresh food to students through their weekly Fresh Food Market, which aims at bringing these foods to students for an affordable price.

The Food Centre is also a supply location for CHEP Good Food Inc., an organization focused on providing food security, allowing students to also purchase fresh foods from them through the Food Centre. These foods come in a variety of options, from a set of about 12 types of fruits and vegetables to a snack pack consisting of a single serving of fruit and vegetables. Stu-

dents are able to place orders through the Food Centre every second Monday, with their orders arriving the following Wednesday.

Off-campus options also exist for those looking to find healthy alternatives.

One such shop, located on Broadway Avenue, sells herbal supplements in addition to healthy foods.

This is the Herbs N’ Health Foodport, which has been locally owned since 1985.

The herbal supplements offered include minerals, vitamins and other related products.

Customers are also able to purchase freshly made soups, gluten-free muffins and quinoa salad from the in-house kitchen, available as either a dine-in or take away meal.

For other options in supplements, there’s a variety of retailers in Saskatoon, such as GNC, Sangster’s, Dad’s Organic Market and Popeye’s Supplements, to name a few of the stores in the city.

Overall there is a large selection of sources for healthy foods in Saskatoon, allowing for students with all sorts of needs to have access to healthy alternatives.

Why so salty? A look at sodium consumption

Sodium, a main ingredient in what’s commonly known as table salt or just plain salt, is a seasoning present in high quantities in many foods. But just how high is that sodium content in the foods you love?

In the past two editions of the Sheaf, I have looked at sugar consumption in my own diet, as well as providing tips for those looking to decrease their own sugar consumption.

From this point, I decided it was also important to look into just how much sodium I was consuming, as it is another common ingredient that can be detrimental in large quantities.

According to Health Canada, the recommended daily sodium intake for individuals aged 14 to 50 years old is 1500 feb 16, 2017

milligrams per day. While they state that keeping your sodium below this amount is the best way to maintain a healthy diet, most of the harmful effects occur once you surpass their prescribed upper limit of 2300 milligrams per day.

Similar to when I tracked my sugar intake, I purposely kept this information out of my mind when I tracked how much sodium I was eating — the goal being to record the most accurate results possible.

To start my day, I had a complete and balanced breakfast that consisted of one can of Red Bull and the general sense that I should really start getting more sleep. This was the smallest can of Red Bull available, so it contained 105 milligrams of sodium.

My first real meal of the day included curried rice and chicken with 610 milligrams of sodium, tortilla chips with 172 milligrams and hummus, which brought in 230 milligrams of sodium. Interestingly, the hummus was a fair bit higher in sodium than the chips. This added up to 1,012 milligrams of sodium for my lunch, bringing my running total to 1,117 milligrams.

Following lunch, I drank

yet another Red Bull in order to satisfy my caffeine dependency and so that I could start studying for some of my looming midterms. This added another 105 milligram dose of sodium to my diet.

Supper is where my downfall came in terms of sodium consumption. I ate three chicken drumsticks that contained 291 milligrams of sodium in total and dipped them in three tablespoons of ranch dressing, which contained 405 milligrams worth of sodium.

Additionally, I ate three slices of roast beef containing 355 milligrams of sodium and then finished the meal with two cookies, each with 53 milligrams of sodium.

My daily total ended up amounting to 2,379 milligrams worth of sodium – 879 milligrams over the recommended lower limit and 79 milligrams over the upper limit set by Health Canada.

Reflecting upon my meals, I realized that if I had simply removed the dipping sauces I used, along with the Red Bulls, I would have lowered my sodium intake by 845 milligrams and would have pretty much made the recommended intake for sodium.

While I felt that my diet

was not too far off from the average student’s, my sodium consumption was significantly lower than what Health Canada deems to be the average intake for Canadians in general. The average Canadian consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day, which is well over what I consumed. It’s the small victories, I guess.

Looking at the list of risks associated with a high sodium intake, it certainly seems that it is something everyone should be considering when making meal choices.

According to Health Canada, a high sodium intake causes a significant increase in the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. In addition to this already fairly scary implication, a high sodium intake is also associated with high blood pressure, other vascular and cardiac damage independent of high blood pressure, detrimental effects on calcium and bone metabolism, an increased risk of stomach cancer and can even influence the severity of asthma for those with the condition. Overall these risks are certainly grounds for scrutinizing your own diet to see just how much sodium you take in.

If our world was like a curling rink, it would be a pretty nice world indeed. I don’t particularly identify as a social activist, but it’s plain to see that our society has some issues that need resolving, particularly related to gender equality. One way to help combat these issues? Curling.

Hear me out. As a sports fan, I think it would be nice to see professional leagues with some more representation across the board. In particular, I think it would be cool to see some prime-time leagues that break the male gender monopoly.

Fortunately, there are a few examples where this has happened and worked brilliantly. Take professional curling. I get it — a lot of people would rather watch competitive knitting. But it’s hard to think of another mass-market televised sport in Canada in which arguably the greatest player of all time was a woman.

If you’ve lived in Saskatchewan for long enough, you’ll know that I am talking about Sandra Schmirler. Although she is best known by current students for her battle with cancer — one that she tragically lost at a young age — Schmirler the Curler is immortal in the world of Canadian sports.

Her team at the 1998 Nagano Olympics was the first to ever win gold in women’s curling at the Winter Olympics, laying the cornerstone for one of the most popular Winter Olympic sports for the foreseeable future.

If you want to get a sense of just how good Schmirler was, go online and find some footage of her game-winning shot at the 1997 Olympic trials for the Canadian women’s team. Making a shot off her own rock to take out her opponent’s stone and win the game? That’s one

of the most clutch moments in all of professional sport.

There are some small gender differences in performance, but they really only exist in the big leagues. That’s not to say, however, that female curlers aren’t world-class athletes. In fact, I already know that a workout session with Rachel Homan’s Ontario team would make me puke if I tried to keep up.

My personal favourite, however, is mixed curling. If you need a textbook example of gender equality, there it is. Although top-level mixed curling isn’t as big of a spectator sport — and is not in the Olympics — it’s just as competitive as men’s or women’s curling.

At the recreational level, mixed curling is usually the rule. Having played on a couple of beer-league mixed teams, my experience was that of a diverse group of people being treated as equals, both on the ice and in the clubhouse. In fact, I’m pretty sure the only person that ever got judged was me. Which was fair, because the only skill I have is making my teammates cringe.

In fact, because curling demands such a high level of respect for everything — especially the ice surface — the smallest degree of prejudice will make you look like a massive jerk.

This is what I think makes curling such an awesome sport. I believe that curling is a game of co-operation, respect and gender equality. A little bit of class can go a long way. If we could take a few lessons in community from our rock-throwing, ice-sweeping comrades, I really believe we’ll be able to understand each other much better. And I don’t think it’s that hard to do.

Trying not to slip and fall on my keister, on the other hand, is another conversation entirely.

HIDDEN HUSKIES Behind the scenes of Huskies Athletics EMILY KLATT Sports & Health Editor

Huskies Athletics is a major part of the University of Saskatchewan community. While many of us are familiar with our student athletes and the fantastic work they do on the court, ice, field or track, the U of S is home to many people who work hard behind the scenes. From coaches to administrative staff to announcers, each person has an important role to play. Read on to meet some of the “Hidden Huskies” that work to help our student athletes towards success.

Mark Dodds head coach for women’s volleyball How did you end up in this position?

I played here at the U of S, and then I went off and played with the national team and then professionally and then I came back — I got injured and so I came back and started coaching with the men’s team actually. I was an assistant coach with the men’s team for four years and I was finishing my degree at the same time. I finished my degree and the women’s position became open, so I applied for it and I was fortunate enough to get it.

What does a typical day in your job look like?

In season, we’re training Monday to Thursday and then playing Friday and Saturday. So that Monday to Thursday, we do weights on Monday and Wednesday mornings. We have individual practices [and] smaller group practices on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, including our evening practices. So for me, [during] my typical days, I’m at weights with the team. They’re getting up at 7 a.m., so if I’m asking them to do that I figured I’d get up and do it as well. Then throughout the day for me, I’m preparing and watching video and planning for the team that we’re going to play against, as well as planning practices and preparing to train the team for the week ahead. There isn’t really a typical day.

There’s a lot of different things that come up and are part of the day.

Are there parts of your job our readers might be surprised to know?

The recruiting part — I don’t think people understand how much time is put into that aspect of it. My email generally, on average, [receives] three or four emails per week with high school athletes contacting me who would to potentially like to come to the U of S. On top of that, there’s the athletes I’m pursuing and looking at and trying to figure out if they’d be a good fit for our program. So the recruiting side of it — making connections, talking to coaches and all those things happen randomly but very often.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I love being in the gym every day and working with athletes that are driven and motivated to be the best that they can be. So to try and help them reach their goals and to follow them through that process is for sure the best part of the job, and the most rewarding part is to work with those athletes and get them where they want to go.

What are some of the challenges that come with your job?

So there’s always the financial side it, you know, trying to raise money. These student athletes are coming here and putting in a lot of time and effort into our program and we want to try and reward them for that with some scholarship dollars, and part of post-secondary athletics is the scholarship side of it.

Why should students care about Huskie Athletics?

I think it can be a big part of bringing the university community together and kind of rallying around the Huskies and being a U of S Huskie, even if you’re not a student athlete. My general take on the world is that people enjoy being part of something and I think you look south of the border, and you see that the women’s college volleyball national final last year was played in front of 18,000 fans. Basketball we see March Madness … college football ... in my mind, it’s essentially people joining together and being part of something that’s bigger than themselves.

What impact do you hope to leave on the players you work with?

What I try to pass down, or try to pass on, to these student athletes is work ethic and discipline and all those characteristics that help them be successful outside of university and throughout the rest of their lives and careers … and be a great member of our society.

What is your role with Huskies Athletics?

The title is sports information director.

It’s essentially communications and marketing for all 15 teams within Huskie Athletics. So website, story writing, media relations, social media and the planning and execution of all of that.

What does a typical day in your job look like?

It depends on the day. I would say Monday to Thursday is preparation for the weekend. So we can never look too far ahead — it’s always week-toweek based on who is at home. So Monday through Thursday is creating programs, creating game previews, preparing the statistics for our webcast, making sure all of the technology works, and Friday and Saturday is game day and execution. feb 16, 2017

I started playing when I was nine. I obviously had a bit of experience playing before but not officially – I figured skated ... all my friends had played hockey so I made the switch over and I’ve been playing since then. Played though minor hockey and then played at the U of S for my university [career of five years].

What does a typical day in your job look like?

[It] depends on the day. So if it’s a weekday, kind of Monday to Thursday, there’s a lot of video. So sitting at my computer a lot, watching videos, breaking it down — our [team’s] video from the weekend before and then looking ahead to who we are playing and breaking down some of their tendencies. [Also] administrative stuff, so lots of emailing with recruits.

Just random stuff that comes up throughout the day. What else do I do? Sometimes I’m busy all day and I don’t know what I did, but all of a sudden it’s 4 p.m. and it’s time to go to the rink.

What are the challenges of your job?

Time. Just never feeling like there’s enough time.

Some weeks you get really busy and all of a sudden it’s Thursday and you’re hopping on the bus to go somewhere, and then it’s Friday morning and you don’t know where the days went. Sometimes with that crunch time, you don’t have the full opportunity you would like to make sure all of your 24 players on the team are taken care of.

What impact do you hope to leave on the players that you work with?

Robin Ulrich interim head coach for women’s hockey community. I think that’s the biggest thing I try to instill in them — that we need to give back to the game as well. That’s why I’m a coach.

Hopefully they see that.

You’re in the interesting position of having been both a player for the Huskies and now a coach. What perspectives do you have on that?

It’s cool. I think I’ve come to appreciate … how much work and thought went into everything.

When you’re a player, sometimes you see a decision that’s made, and you kind of go, ‘Why would they do that? Why would you change that? Why would you do this or that?’ and you don’t realize that that choice wasn’t a split-second decision that was made.

I think that whatever your opinion on athletics is, we are kind of the face of the university. There’s 15 teams on campus and every weekend, you have between three to four to six teams travelling somewhere else in the country, and we’re kind of the people that represent the university and I think overall, Huskie athletes do a very good job of that.

What’s your favourite part about being a U of S Huskie?

My favourite part is just that feeling of community. We have our own team here and our own family and we’re very tight and close-knit but also like I said, with the 15 other teams, it’s a feeling of a bigger family … so that’s a very cool experience.

What is your favourite part of your job?

The athletes. I am here because of the student athletes. I wouldn’t have a job without the student athletes and so they’re the reason why I make the choices I do in marketing, make the choices I do when I write and they’re the best part. Seeing them succeed and seeing them go off and do things outside of athletics.

What are some of the challenges that come with job?

Probably the personnel and resources. So there’s one of me and 15 teams. It would be nice to have multiple of me for all of the sports, which is sort of what you’d see in the NCAA or … in the United States. So that would be the biggest challenge.

What impact do you hope you have on the student athletes?

I hope it helps promote their accomplishments and what they are achieving. I hope that when they leave here they can see their achievements, whether it’s on the ice, or field, or court, are there in some sort of

history, [whether it’s] statistics, pictures, all of those kind of things — I hope they look back on it as a fond memory and that I had some role in making it a successful time for them.

What’s your favourite part about being a U of S Huskie?

I’m going to have to go with the obvious: winning! Winning’s a lot of fun, and hosting championships … being in playoffs. This is my favourite time of year. October for when football and soccer are winding down and everybody’s starting, and right now when everyone’s getting into that playoff time.

Local brew: A look at Saskatchewan’s very own beers KEZIA FOURIE There are some liquors that students are more than familiar with — Smirnoff, Fireball and Original 16 to name a few. However, what a lot of students might not be aware of is that Saskatchewan itself is home to quite a few breweries and distilleries — which are about to be uncovered to all.

Starting us off is Paddock Wood. They take pride in being like Saskatchewan’s first microbrewery, after challenging the provincial government to change the law.

Opened by Stephen Cavan, Paddock Wood makes beers of all types — from India Pale Ales to specialty beers knowns as the Heartstopper. In an article for CKOM, spokesperson Rob Kapronczi once said that “we use only four ingredients, no chemicals, no preservatives, [and] no pasteurization.”

That dedication seems to have paid off, as several of their beers have won awards at the Calgary International BeerFest. Paddock Wood Brewing Co. is located at 103rd Street if you want to pay them a visit or learn more.

If beer isn’t your thing, try some homegrown vodka from Lucky Bastards Distillery.

They take pride in their spirits and liqueurs, brewing them only in small quantities to serve you only the “crème de la crème of distillates.”

LB Distillery was founded

by Michael Goldney and Carey Bowman after Bowman was inspired by Europe’s craft spirits. Their crafts are unique, with flavours beyond your imagination. Explore Bowman’s Bacon Bettah Bitters for your next Caesar or add Chai Vodka to your next mug of hot chocolate. Visit them on 47th Street to see Ginger — their copper pot still.

Besides LB Distillers, Saskatoon has another brewer of spirits: Black Fox Farm & Distillery, which is just outside of Saskatoon on Valley Road. They pride themselves on sustainability, which is why they use their own ingredients from their farm or from other personally-known farmers.

Black Fox combines excellent flavours into their liqueurs, such as Honey Ginger, and makes vodka out of triticale for a different taste.

Omega Eta Phi: Greek life is coming to the U of S NATASHA HAUSERMANN Sorority life is coming to the University of Saskatchewan this year for the first time ever with the launch of Omega Eta Phi. Two U of S students, Lindsay Rose and Anika Rae, were inspired to create a sorority for U of S students to empower one another and create the social atmosphere that some students want when attending university.

Omega Eta Phi will be a co-ed club that allows students to experience the

social aspect of Greek life, while bettering themselves through helping one another with schooling tutorials, supporting the community, and a local and national charity.

Rae, who is an alumna of Alpha Omicron Pi Women’s Fraternity from the University of Calgary, said she and Rose were inspired to create Omega Eta Phi when they noticed the lack of cohesion at the U of S. “We saw there was distinct lack of cohesive community on campus. Many students, especially those who are

One that may be more well-known is Saskatoon’s Great Western Brewing Company. The brewery, which was originally home to Hub City Brewing Company in 1927, has changed hands many times since then.

The company website tells the story of how Great Western came about when 16 employees from the former O’Keefe Brewery created Great Western to save their jobs. Their hard work in 1989 paid off, as today their beer is world class and holds a great reputation. If you’ve never tried Great Western, give one of their most famous titles, the Original 16, a try.

Much like the prairie sun, beer tends to have a golden yellow colour — maybe that’s what inspired the next brewery’s name.

Prairie Sun Brewery was started by Cameron Ewen and Heather Williams, who decided to build their own brewery after being approached by an entrepreneur.

Ewen and Williams took time to fill their minds with the knowledge that encompasses and surrounds craft brewing before they opened Prairie Sun in 2013. Prai-

rie Sun definitely has some unique flavours, including Moose Tracks — which they describe as a hazelnut espresso stout.

There is a stigma against Greek life and Omega Eta Phi is looking to change the view that students have.

Rae and Rose hope to reach out to the student body and show them that Greek life is more than just partying.

“A lot of people wrongfully believe that it’s like the movies — all about partying, that we haze our pledges and that you have to be rich or conventionally attractive to join. These are simply untrue and we believe that the more we get the word out about what Omega Eta Phi is actually about, the more people will become interested,” Rae said.

To give you an idea of what Omega Eta Phi has planned, Rae and Rose provided the Sheaf with an idea of how they propose to go beyond just being a social club.

“We plan on supporting one local charity and one international charity as our

philanthropies, so we will hold events to fundraise for these causes, as well as potentially volunteer our own time to our local community. We also plan on holding optional study hours, to help those who are interested to boost their marks and learn from each other,” Rose said.

Not only will Omega Eta Phi help enrich students’ resumés, but it will provide opportunities for students to feel empowered, confident and personally rewarded.

“It will provide the opportunity to expand [students’] social horizons by meeting people from all sorts of walks of life, being inspired and supported in achieving their academic and personal goals, as well as giving back to campus, and the local and global community,” Rae said.

Currently, Rose and Rae are in the process of ratification with the USSU to make their dream become a reality. There has already been interest from students, and Rae and Rose are ready to get started.

“In the first week of doing preliminary work on starting a sorority, we already had individuals reaching

to restock on alcohol, try something homegrown and taste the reward. Not only are you supporting local businesses and the local economy, but you’re also indulging in some of the best alcohol around. So gather up your friends, try something new and enjoy the tastes of locally crafted goods!

Hangover remedies to save us all MARK ANDERSON There are few certainties in life — death, taxes, the lackadaisical manner in which the artist at Subway wraps your sandwich — and perhaps the worst certainty of them all, the agony and despair that awaits you in the morning following a night of drinking.

The hangover is the ultimate leveller — how we reached it, no two stories are exactly the same. But the outcome is as unavoidable as it is painful.

Maybe I’ve simply been one to accept my fate with hangovers when I could have been heeding advice from outside sources to help me. My friends, my parents or even the unbiased, well-researched and ever-trustworthy medical sources who conduct their services within the confines of Reddit and Yahoo Answers: they might know a

trick or two to beat a hangover.

So, the question remains — what is the best hangover remedy? Depending on the person, specific remedies may or may not be successful. So instead of trying to find the one best hangover cure, here’s a list of various remedies that hopefully includes one or two that’ll help you out in a time of need.

1. All-you-can-eat-sushi: I’ve had a few hangovers in my day, and not once have I felt the desire to reach max capacity via Maki rolls.

2. A combination of cheap pizza, green tea and a stroll outdoors: Wait, a stroll outdoors? Don’t you mean avoid wherever my eyes may come into contact with a source of light? This suggestion isn’t for those sensitive to light in the depths of their hangover.

3. Exactly two litres of Gatorade and one Tylenol: The Gatorade must be blue and only a single Tylenol must be taken — if it’s Powerade, they say the hangover may last a lifetime.

4. Pedialyte: Yes, I mean the formula your mom gave you as a small child in the midst of a harrowing bout with diarrhea.

5. Shower: Both literally and metaphorically, wash away the alcohol. Just make sure the water isn’t too hot, or you may feel even more nauseous than you already do.

6. Sleep: Admit defeat and sleep the hangover off.

You may have things you need to get done that morning, but let’s be honest, with this killer hangover you’re not going to be that productive anyway.

7. Sunglasses: There’s a price to pay with this suggestion — in exchange for feeling slightly better, you become the asshole who wears sunglasses inside. But it’s worth it.

8. Prevention: You’ve probably heard this last suggestion from your parents — in fact, it’s one of the first things they learn at parent school — and that is, of course, prevention.

In an ideal world, this last bit of advice might just work. However, we don’t live an ideal world, nor do we live in a world where people don’t want celebratory drinks after a projected F in Anthropology 101 is returned as a sparkling C. Whatever the circumstances, more often than not, the following morning begins in much the same way — seemingly, the beginning of the end.

Next time, before the world marches on without you at the pace of the pounding in your head, take swift action. Stumble to the nearest sushi-and-pizza spot, double-fisting green tea and Gatorade — it has to be blue — and grab some Pedialyte on the way.

If none of these remedies work, well, maybe you should set down that Palm Bay, bid farewell to the bartender and come play cards with my parents.

If you’re anything like me, the next best thing to watching a movie is listening to a good movie podcast. For the uninitiated, here are five great shows worth giving a listen to in your spare time — spoiler alert on all of them.

1. You Must Remember This: I’m newer to this show, so I can’t claim the same familiarity I have with the rest

of the recommendations, but Karina Longworth’s informative and tightly produced exploration of Hollywood’s seediest stories is a great listen for anyone with an affinity for gossip and celebrity dirt.

Where to start: “23: Mia Farrow in the 1960s, Part One: Mia & Frank.” In discussing the early years of Hollywood icon and lifelong scandal-magnet Mia Farrow, Longworth combines research with dramatization, history with storytelling. It’s not the most insidious episode, but it’s certainly com-

pelling and it showcases Longworth’s talents in tremendous form.

2. The Canon: While currently on hiatus for rather disturbing reasons, Amy Nicholson’s program is set to return to the airwaves this spring with a new co-host.

The show’s premise revolves around the discussion of generally well-regarded films with the goal of determining whether or not they belong in the canon of all-time great movies. The film of the week is then offered up to the public to vote and determine the film’s fate.

Where to start: “89: Blazing Saddles.” You’d be best to pick an episode about a movie you’ve seen and love, but if you wanted to get a feel for the show’s style, Nicholson and former co-host Devin Faraci’s gushing analysis of the Mel Brooks classic provides both articulate criticism and fan love.

3. The Faculty of Horror: In a sea of male-driven movie podcasts, The Faculty of Horror can be considered an island of lost souls. Hosts, horror addicts and academics Andrea Subissati and Alexandra West, take the time to critically analyze scary movies and their themes through

a sociological and feminist lense.

Each episode comes with “required readings” — typically a film or two along with some related critical essays — and you’d be wise to come to class prepared as they never hesitate to go in-depth in their discussions.

Where to start: “4. Do you like scary movies?” In an early outing, Subissati, West and fellow podcasters look back to what scared them as children.

The format is abnormal when compared to their typical episodes, but there’s something about it that makes a striking impression on the listener.

4. The Important Cinema Club: I might argue that the title of this show is a little bit misleading. While hosts Justin Decloux and Will Sloan undoubtedly know their stuff when it comes to arthouse and international cinema, this energetic and ever-so-catty program is far from the snobbish circle-jerk that its name makes it out to be.

With a generally loose format, they cover plenty of obscure films, filmmakers and actors, but they always keep it interesting and balance those episodes out with ones on actors like Sylvester Stallone and the Friday the 13th series

— so don’t let them ever fool you into thinking they’re too fancy for you.

Where to start: “#23 — What the Hell is Canadian Cinema?” If you’re a self-loathing Canadian like me, this deconstruction of our country’s film industry and inferiority complex is a hilarious and brutally honest listening experience.

5. We Hate Movies: Bad movie comedy podcasts are a dime a dozen, so We Hate Movies sits atop a very high throne. Regular hosts Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak and Eric Szyszka use the show as a platform to reminisce not only about bad movies, but about adolescence and growing up as a movie nerd.

They have a back-and-forth charm that only the best of friends could have and their now-vast catalogue of episodes covers everything from shit they loved as kids to atrocious blockbusters and movies they love but love to mock even more.

Where to start: “Episode 205 — Space Jam.” Again, it’s hard to recommend any one episode, as your favourite will likely be the one on the movie you’ve seen the most times, but their scorned skewering of Space Jam warrants repeat listenings to this day.

An education in arts and science includes a collection of varying subjects to be studied throughout the course of the degree. Anyone who has worked through, or is currently working through a degree in the arts and sciences, knows that a certain number of requirements in the major subject are necessary, complemented by a certain number of elective requirements.

This type of education is invaluable and I think everyone should receive at least some exposure to the arts and sciences.

The variety of subjects studied produce well-rounded graduates, with exceptional soft skills which are highly demanded in the workforce.

Soft skills are competencies such as imperative critical thinking abilities, information management, argument formation — both written and verbal — and problem solving, to name only a few.

These skills are highly valued, but just skills alone will not necessarily land you a job in your field of study, or any other field for that matter.

By contrast, one could obtain a more professional or technical degree. Examples of these degrees might be those offered in medicine, law, education, commerce or engineering. These degrees might require students to study some arts and science subjects, but for the most part, will focus intensely on the respective subject.

Other variables held constant, job prospects for graduates of these areas directly out of university are often better, as more specific skills have been acquired and licensure is sometimes necessary, depending on the field.

It is important, then, to remember that an undergraduate degree in the arts and sciences is not a professional degree. I place a very high value on the diversity of an arts and science education that produces the well-rounded and intellectual

minds that this world so desperately needs, but most students must be prepared to continue their education after receiving an undergraduate degree in the arts and sciences.

Regardless, it all depends what your goals are and where you see yourself upon graduation. If you like your psychology or economics courses and want to become a psychologist or economist, you’ll likely need to go back to university and get a graduate degree or two.

On the other hand, if you feel you’ll accumulate enough student debt with one degree and are ready to start working upon graduation, coupling work with part-time distance education to strive for a professional designation is a great option.

Depending on your field of interest, many different professional designations are available, which sometimes require an undergrad degree in any subject combined with practical experience. Complementing an arts and science education with a technical skill acquired through a polytechnic school might be an option, too.

In sum, if you’re not sure what you want to do but love the arts and sciences, by all means study them. Just be prepared to keep learning after you receive your degree.

Besides, education is a lifelong journey that need not end upon graduation.

Feminism Week put on by the Pride Centre and Women’s Centre.

What all of these awareness weeks have in common is that they are all attempting to provide knowledge and exposure to a specific topic or issue. This is extraordinarily important because it fosters acceptance towards “taboo” issues, creates dialog and benefits the USSU. These awareness weeks can also help the greater community of the university and sometimes communities off campus. We can see this in the Women’s Centre’s menstrual products drive — which will be stationed in the Arts Tunnel from Feb. 13-17 — where the donations collected will be distributed throughout both AIDS Saskatoon and northern Saskatchewan communities.

The events that go along with awareness weeks can fundraise for the centres through admissions to poetry nights, the drag shows and the various other events they put on. They also serve to bring in new volunteers to the centres. These in tandem

allow them to put on more events and to provide services to the student body.

The Who Needs Feminism Week was a prime example of an awareness week that positively created dialogue, as it featured a white board campaign in which people could stop and write why they personally feel they need feminism. The results included many powerful messages surrounding issues such as the wage gap and gender roles.

The awareness weeks, more often than not, take place in the Arts Tunnel, which sees 22,000 visitors every single day, giving each topic a great deal of exposure.

Although criticisms have been made that more people walk past the booths than stop at them, or that they only stop for the free swag, I would argue that the booths and events are still important and serve a purpose.

Regardless if people are just stopping for a witty pin or to grab an adult flip book, there’s still a level of engagement which often leads to some sort of communication

around the specific topic of the week. It’s also impossible to have everyone stop at a table throughout the day, but there is typically still a high engagement level from my experience. Even if only a few new people stop for information or attend an event, I see it as a victory because these interactions tend to lead to an opening of someone's mind to a new perspective.

The awareness weeks are not limited to social issues through the centres, either.

The USSU itself has put on events that encourage students to get engaged in the political process and held the Usask Votes campaign, which gave out information on how to vote.

Awareness weeks are an entertaining way in which to give out important information to a large amount of people. They are incredibly important to have because of the dialogue it creates and allows exposure to topics that people may either be uncomfortable with or not know about. Overall, the awareness weeks help create a more open campus.

An arts and science degree is not a professional degree BODAN WOROBETZ Something that may not be completely transparent to students — and those outside of academia — are the job expectations or lack thereof many have upon convocation with a degree in arts and science. It is important to understand that an arts and science degree is not the same as a professional degree.

Unfortunately, obtaining an undergraduate degree in the arts and sciences might not necessarily secure you employment directly out of uni-

versity in your field of study.

Some understand this the day they begin their studies, but others might not really sort this out until nearing the completion of their degree — or even later yet.

This is a fairly broad analysis, and some degrees in the arts and sciences might be in greater demand from employers. However, based on my own experiences in scouring the job market and scrambling to figure out how to land a comfortable job upon convocation, it is my belief that relying solely on a degree in the arts and sciences might

This includes the awareness weeks put on by the University of Saskatchewan Students' Union, which are both incredibly effective and important for students.

Awareness weeks are frequent on our campus and are often done through the USSU feb 16, 2017

campus centres. These weeks have specific themes and corresponding events. The most recent example would be the Feb. 6-10 Sex Week orchestrated by the Pride Centre, Women’s Centre and Help Centre, which promoted healthy sexuality and acceptance of sexual diversity.

Sex Week not only had a booth that gave out information and contraceptives but also held events including a sex toy party and the Sexibition drag show. This year has also seen Ally Week and Who Needs

Sanctuary cities are common throughout the United States, but as of right now there are only four of them in Canada. The turbulent politics surrounding immigration are changing the way we respond to it and there is talk of several more Canadian cities becoming sanctuaries, including Saskatoon.

It was announced in early February that the Saskatoon municipal government is beginning to discuss becoming a sanctuary city. This announcement comes in the aftermath of American president Donald Trump’s executive order for a 120day ban on refugees entering the United States, as well as a 90-day ban on entry from seven Middle Eastern and North African countries.

Both Saskatoon and Regina are considering adopting the sanctuary city status, following suit of some other cities in Canada, such as Vancouver and London, Ont. Illegal immigration has previously not been prevalent in Canada the way it has in the U.S. In 2011, there were a reported 487 people caught entering Canada illegally, but the past year has seen a rise to over 1,000 people who were caught illegally entering.

This is still far from the numbers of migrants caught entering the U.S. illegally, which can reach over 1,000 migrants every day during peak seasons. However, with Trump’s exclusionary executive orders and promises of deportations, illegal immigration might be on the rise in Canada.

Becoming a sanctuary city means that everyone is welcome to feel safe in a city, regardless of their immigration status, and it also means taking the role of enforcing immigration status off of municipal law enforcement.

This will mean that the local police force will be able to spend more time focusing on stopping actual crimes and keeping its people safer.

If Saskatoon goes through with becoming a sanctuary city, it would mean that everyone will be able to access police services without fear of being displaced. This will make for safer cities because of more trusting relationships between everyone living in the city and the police.

It will make the use of health care, public transportation,

schools and all other public services open to everyone as well.

There is the fear that sanctuary cities make it easier for criminals without immigration status to live in the city. The sanctuary city status does not make undocumented immigrants exempt from the law, it only ensures that their presence alone is not an indictable crime. If an undocumented immigrant were to otherwise break the law, they would still be prosecuted just like any other person.

As these discussions are only in the beginning stages, there is still quite a few things to be determined regarding the change. For example, how would this affect police training and how would they ensure unity among the police department on the new policy?

There is also the question of how the citizens of Saskatoon will react. There is a rising xenophobia problem in Canada, as was made obvious by the horrific Quebec shooting in January. The idea that exclusion is the only way to have safe communities is spreading quickly not just in Canada but throughout the whole Western world.

Welcoming immigrants to our communities and treating them as equals will help to lower the hostility from all involved. Inclusion, rather than exclusion, is the best course of action to create safe and happy communities.

A city diverse in population and culture with mutual respect may be a utopian dream, and having sanctuary cities is a small step in that direction — but a small step is better than no steps at all.

Making Saskatoon a sanctuary city might take some of the stigma away from refugee and immigration policy.

Giving all people access to these services can only improve the living conditions of all people in the city. It will lower crime, keep the whole population healthier and better educated, and strengthen relationships between police and the community.

The benefits of Saskatoon becoming a sanctuary city greatly outweigh the detriments, so there is no reason why these discussions should not proceed into actions. This will not only make everyone a little bit more equal, but will also strengthen our communities and society as a whole. feb 16, 2017

ATHABASCA HALL — While many foolish students got sucked into expensive dinners and screenings of Fifty Shades Darker, second-year English major Mark Hazelsteven took Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to get some stuff off his Netflix queue.

“Honestly, I just feel bad for my roommate,” Hazelsteven said. “While he’s out there having vigorous

sex and eating erotic food or whatever, I’m here in my gym shorts watching Infowars on YouTube and eating Munchie Mix. You tell me who the real winner is here.”

Hazelsteven admits that not having a date was his best decision of 2017.

“Honestly, I thought I’d be super lonely and sad knowing that all my best friends have partners and are sharing their lives

with other people, but I’ve already masturbated to Maxim three times today and I had buffalo wings for dinner, so realistically I’m really in no position to complain,” Hazelsteven said.

Hazelsteven went as far as to tell the Sheaf that he hopes to be single next year to repeat the ritual.

“Valentine’s Day is about having a good time, right?” Hazelsteven said.

“For some, that may mean spending quality time with your future spouse or expressing human commitment to another person, but for me it means getting smash-ass drunk by myself, listening to Neutral Milk Hotel in my room and not studying for my midterms — to each their own, right?”

At the time of print, Hazelsteven has fallen asleep in his clothes.
