DSUL Bailey 545 is the newest rising star at Sullivan Ranch. This outstanding female just plain out-produced herself on her first flush, and we couldn’t be more excited! She raised the Champion Hereford Steer at Houston 2010, two-time champion steer for Kristine Apel, and two outstanding open heifers that are going to make a major impact on the show circuit this summer/fall. Bailey 545 is a Midus daughter out of 145E Summit, who in return is the dam o f Grand Slam, Hard Drive, Bases Loaded, and Sandy. Take note: this is no mistake. Just royal blood!

WalkerArticle by Dr. Paul Walker, Professor of Animal Science, and Matthew Faulkner, Undergraduate Student, Illinois State University

Educating The Future “Bring your tractor to school”, “bib overalls”, “camouflage”, “petting zoo”, these are but a few examples of activities that are promoted through our primary and secondary schools during agriculture week. In many ways these activities are advantageous to promoting agriculture. However, my thoughts of these events as advantageous are accompanied by thoughts of more effective ways to educate the general public and the young people of our generation. A typical petting zoo, while well intended, often falls short of having a true educational focus. Agriculture is a very diverse industry. Fully 25% of the U.S. labor force is involved in an agriculture related business (Agribusiness). Agriculture is not an industry that consists of only farmers/producers. However, this is the primary image that is presented with “bring your tractor to school”, “camouflage”, and “bib dress up” days. These events should be changed to “Agriculture Profession Day.” Students could choose an agriculture profession in which they have interest and then come to school dressing the part. For example, one student may dress as a producer, another as a processor, perhaps a commodity broker, a financial officer, or a marketer. These careers represent just a few of the many career choices available to students. The agriculture students would then research the careers or occupations they have chosen to portray and have a short speech or presentation discussing their chosen field. These speeches or presentations could be given to other students who lack knowledge of the diversity within the agriculture industry. Far too often, when petting zoos are held, students bring in cute and fluffy little animals to show the visiting patrons. Currently, animal rights groups are attacking animal agriculture. Groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are lobbying for animal rights. They focus their efforts on public emotions and perception, depicting mistreatment of all animals and inhumane harvesting of animals. They attempt to sway public perception into viewing animals in a human sense. This is known as anthropomorphism. Perpetuating this “bunny rabbit” syndrome with petting zoos does not promote animal agriculture in a positive fashion. “Petting zoos” should be replaced with animal production exhibits. It is okay to show off a baby lamb only if the lamb is accompanied with a mature sheep, a bundle of wool, a wool sweater, a leg of lamb roast, and lamb taste treats (meat snacks). Get the message?! An animal exhibit explains animal agriculture and its role in society. A petting zoo just reinforces PETA’s agenda.

To expand public knowledge and counter negative emotionbased perceptions by activist groups, we should incorporate more aspects into the petting zoo. Before individuals reach the animal to pet, a well designed animal exhibit will have a station set up which discusses why each animal is raised. If it is a companion animal such as a dog or cat, posters should discuss the breed and its historical purpose. Of course the current use of that animal, even if it is just companionship, can be included. Animals that are raised for production purposes, which are on display at animal exhibits, should be accompanied by similar information. Students should discuss the care and work that goes into raising the animals, while displaying what their animal produces and how it is used. This should be done while discussing the benefits of animal production to society. All occupations and careers within agriculture are affected by the negative depiction of agriculture on the environment. Therefore, groups of students should design projects to address environmental issues. With these presentations students can educate others about the issues and present facts that can counter misinformed perceptions about climate change, pollution, and agriculture based energy production (ethanol, biodiesel, methane, etc.). Student projects could be developed to display unbiased and truthful facts regarding emissions produced by agriculture, in comparison with other emission producers such as cars, factories, etc. More and more, agriculture is shown in a negative light to the public by animal rights and environmental groups, and other organizations whose influential opinions have varying agendas against modern agriculture. This negative image is portrayed through media reports, controversy with activist groups, and advertisements depicting agriculture as negatively effecting the environment. Society’s perception is often driven by emotion rather than factual infromation. The contemporary agriculture industry is losing this battle. In reference to theses battles/issues, we continue to use science in our arguments and rebuttals, rather than emotion. “Agriculture Day” needs to be used as a way to incorporate science with personal experience (emotion) to educate both our farm and non-farm youth, who will be the future leaders of our industry and our country. Authors Note: This article was first authored by Matthew Faulkner, as a weekly writing assignment for our “Current Issues in the Livestock Industry” Course. Matt is an Animal Science major in his junior year.

BusinessArticle by Matthew E. O’Donnell, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

Protecting Your Retirement Investments During a Job Transition The current economic and market environment has prompted many Americans to rethink their retirement strategies. If you are experiencing a job transition—particularly if the transition is unplanned and unexpected—such a reassessment may be particularly important for you. While it may be tempting to focus more on your immediate needs, you should not lose sight of long-term goals, especially your retirement strategy. Some Basic Decisions Your employer-sponsored retirement plan is likely to be a key component of your retirement strategy. Because it represents a key source of future retirement income, it is important to carefully consider your alternatives for administering these assets. During a job transition, you will usually have three options: take a lump sum distribution, leave your assets in the employer-sponsored plan or move your assets into a Rollover IRA. Taking a direct, lump sum distribution—With this option, the assets in your plan are distributed directly to you in a lump sum, which provides you with immediate access to your funds. Depending on your short-term needs, that may appear to be an attractive alternative. However, a distribution will likely result in substantial federal and state income taxes and a 10% IRS penalty tax, which can significantly reduce the amount of the distribution. Because you will be receiving the distribution directly, the plan administrator must withhold up to 20% of the value of the distribution for federal income tax purposes. Moreover, you will lose the benefit of the tax-deferred status of these assets, which could reduce the amount ultimately available to you at retirement. The status quo option—You can decide to do nothing, leaving your assets in your former employer’s plan. That will protect the tax-deferred status of your assets and allow you to transfer the account assets at a later time to a new employer’s retirement plan that accepts rollovers. But you may be limiting your investment choices and control because employer plans typically have a restricted investment menu and require the consent of your spouse before you can name someone else as a beneficiary. Establishing a Rollover IRA—A Rollover IRA simultaneously addresses the issues of taxation, flexibility and control, and may hold significant benefits for you as a result: • If your distribution is transferred directly to a custodian, rather than to you, the Rollover IRA eliminates the with holding requirement and penalties that may result from a lump sum distribution. • The entire rollover amount can be invested immediately, according to the strategy you specify. • Your assets and any earnings continue to have the poten tial to grow tax-deferred until you retire and begin taking withdrawals. • You may gain access to a wider range of investment options and more retirement planning and distribution flexibility. • You can name any beneficiary, including a trust, without needing the consent of your spouse (although special rules may apply in community property states).

50

June/July 2010 theshowcircuit.com

For example, investment products in an employer plan are usually limited to mutual funds and company stock. With a self-directed Rollover IRA, you can work with your financial professional to structure a portfolio using stocks, bonds, annuities and other investments utilizing an asset allocation1 that is customized to help you meet your retirement investment objectives. And your retirement strategy can be further tailored with a wider range of beneficiary selection and distribution choices. Consider Consolidation This may also be an excellent time to deal with multiple IRAs you may have opened over the years, and with account balances you may have left in the plans of former employers. Together, these assets may represent a significant sum. There are good reasons to consider consolidating them all in a Rollover IRA: • Comprehensive investment strategy—It can be difficult to maintain an effective investment strategy—one that accurately reflects your goals, timing and risk tolerance— when assets are spread among multiple financial institu tions. When you consolidate, your financial professional can help you ensure that these assets are part of your over all asset allocation strategy that is reflective of your current financial situation and long-term retirement goals. • Greater investment flexibility—A self-directed IRA gen erally offers you the ability to choose from a wide range of investment products, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities and more. • Simplified tracking—It is easier to monitor your progress and investment results when all your retirement savings are in one place, because you will receive one statement instead of several. That simplifies your life while protecting the environment. • Lower costs—Reducing the number of accounts may also reduce your account fees and other investment-related charges. Dealing with one account rather than several also simplifies the distribution process—including complying with complex minimum distribution rules when you reach age 70½.* And you avoid the risk of losing track of your retirement accounts or access to the account assets should your former employer merge with another company or go out of business. Your financial professional can help you assess your alternatives so you can make decisions based on what’s best for you. You may find that this time of transition holds benefits for your retirement assets. Matthew E. Oklahoma Club Calf Association - June ‘10 Greetings from the Oklahoma Club Calf Association! Spring is finally here! All that moisture we endured this winter has sure helped our pastures provide a beautiful green backdrop for all those new calves that have hit the ground. Those kids that covered masses of ground following the show circuit had lots of opportunities to participate in OCCA sanctioned shows. Members chasing points fought hard in some of the worst and coldest weather I have ever seen, while still having the time of their life. Great memories were made at our Beef Expo which was huge success with entry numbers holding steady. We expected the economy to impact participation and sponsorships. But parents and sponsors spare no expense when it comes to providing good opportunities for our agricultural youth. A special thank you goes to our new Platinum Sponsors, Cherokee Trailers, Cinch, and Cruel Girl which join long-standing Platinum sponsors, Elite Trailers, and Purina Mills. OCCA welcomes some new faces to the board of directors. We are excited about the fresh ideas these folks bring to the table and have already implemented some of their suggestions. There are several events on the horizon of which OCCA members can take advantage. The OJCA Preview Show, which serves as a good junior national preparation opportunity, is the first weekend in June. We will once again sponsor the Wanted Ones Sale during the Tulsa State Fair. This is a great opportunity for club calf consigners to provide an excellent selection of show calf prospects to hard working feeders and talented showman. And to all the showman, good luck and safe journeys as you hit the road. I look forward to seeing you in Stillwater in June. Sincerely, Tim B. Thank you Sponsors, Supporters, & Volunteers No organization survives very long without the generous and continued support of sponsors and volunteers. This year OCCA is pleased to acknowledge as Platinum sponsors several companies who have chosen to put their money where their heart is – with youth in the cattle business. Please join us in thanking long-time supporter Purina Honor Show Chow for another year of support to our organization, also returning this year is Elite Trailers, and new to OCCA in 2010 are Cherokee Trailers and Cinch & Cruel Girl Clothing. In addition to the sponsors above there are numerous other sponsors who contribute to our ability to operate one of the most competitive show circuits in the nation. These folks have a thorough understanding of our cattle shows and our member/exhibitors. Thanks to Blue Ribbon Show Supply, Show String, Sullivan’s Show Supply, Bob Heidlage Photography, The Show Circuit Magazine, and the many cattle breeders, families and individuals who support our organization with their money, time, and talent. The OCCA web site offers a complete list of sponsors and supporters with links to their businesses and products. We hope you’ll let them know how much their support means and thank them by your patronage, hugs and pats on the back – they are the best and we couldn’t do it without them!

An award designed to recognize overall individual excellence and achievement in the exhibition of beef cattle. This award considers OCCA junior exhibitors involved in exhibiting steers, breeding heifers and beef showmanship. While each of these aspects is individually considered, the award places emphasis on the well rounded individual who is involved in two or more aspects of beef cattle exhibition. Ideally the Purina Premier Exhibitor is an accomplished showman who is equally knowledgeable about breeding and market animals.

Brock Courtney, Champion Lauren Shieve, 1st Runner-up Clint Barney, 2nd Runner-up

The Sunrise Award was established in 1988 to honor the memory of Patty Davis, a charter member of the Oklahoma Club Calf Association and Junior Board Secretary in 1987. Known as fun-loving, hard-working, determined and kind, Patty was the 16 year old daughter of Ted and Sandy Davis. She was a champion showman throughout the country and an enthusiastic supporter of livestock activities in Oklahoma. After her death from injuries received in an automobile accident in December 1987, Patty’s family and friends established the Sunrise Award to recognize family effort, teamwork, and accomplishment in the show ring. The Sunrise Award is given each year to a family that exemplifies these values.

Missouri Club Calf Association Missouri Juniors, Friends, & Family.. August is just around the corner and the MCCA could use your help! We are looking for people who believe in the youth of tomorrow and who understand the positive impact that exhibiting livestock can make. Show the junior exhibitors how proud you are of them and all of their hard work by becoming a MCCA sponsor. The more sponsorships we receive the more kids we can reward. Please consider becoming a MCCA sponsor today! There are a couple of ways to show your support: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Do you have a farm or business that you would like to advertise to the many families across the state that views our website? Then purchase a link… for only $100/year! Make a monetary donation in the name of the award ceremony to be held during the State Fair in Sedalia this August. Donate an item that can be given as an award. Sponsor a specific breed award - or - the top prize of all… the overall exhibitor award!

We are a non-profit organization created to “give back” to the junior exhibitor. 100% all of donations will be awarded to the kids. Please contact one of us to become a MCCA sponsor.

Trans Ova Article

Today’s Donor

It is very common in a production sale lineup to advertise donors as a separate listing. “Twenty show heifer prospects, 15 bred heifers, and five donors” is a typical description of females in a sale offering. But what is the definition of a donor? Most people define a donor as a cow that has had one or more outstanding progeny, and has been flushed to make multiple offspring for the next calf crop, normally through embryo transfer (ET). Often these cows are held back from getting bred to be flushed multiple times, sometimes for longer than a year. These donors tend to exhibit a more advanced Body Condition Score (BCS) because they have less nutritional requirements than if gestating a pregnancy or lactating on a regular interval. Typical perception of a donor is a slightly overweight, open cow that has an elite set of offspring on the ground. “Our business revolves around donor females on a daily basis,” says Jared Knock, Sales and Marketing Director for Trans Ova Genetics. “We see the definition of a donor changing as technology allows us to create progeny in multiple ways.” The type of females that are considered donors has expanded greatly with the increased use of in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is an alternative to ET for producing embryos from elite females. In an IVF procedure, unfertilized oocytes are recovered directly from the ovary, fertilized and cultured in a laboratory. These embryos are then transferred into recipients on the same biological schedule that ET embryos are transferred.

One of the great advantages of IVF is that embryos can be produced from pregnant cows or heifers. “Follicles are continuously generated on the ovaries throughout gestation so they may be harvested from an animal that is bred,” explains Knock. “A trained IVF technician can successfully collect oocytes from a pregnant animal until she is 90-100 days into gestation.” Recently, many breeders have identified elite females within their herd that could be potential donors. But, rather than make the choice between making embryos from these females or breeding them for their earliest calving dates, they now can do both! That is a powerful, paradigm-shifting breakthrough that is now a reality thanks to the advantages of IVF. An especially valuable part of every operation’s herd is its string of show heifers. Those that stay bred and have a calf early in the calving season tend to remain more productive in the cow herd. Furthermore, it is an advantage during shows late in the fall to have these heifers displaying reproductive development that accompanies late term gestation. It is now possible to have pregnancies gestating from elite show heifers while they simultaneously achieve their greatest successes in the ring. This breakthrough will make for some interesting ringside conversation in the coming years. Taking the opportunity to perform IVF on your pregnant females may change your personal definition of a donor.
