Sullivan’s
Vita Hair Volumizer
™
Foaming Shampoo
The first livestock shampoo to scientifically produce hair volume! Vita Hair Volumizer™ Foaming Shampoo is formulated with a natural plantbased proprietary surfactant technology which creates an opposite acting polar electrical charge within each hair strand that actually pushes every hair follicle apart. This prevents the hair from sticking together, and actually springs it loose, making each hair follicle stand on end for a noticeable difference in hair volume and body. Fortified with Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ a nourishing vitamin package to boost hair and skin health without added weight to hair. Designed to be used in a foamer. A true “game changer” in hair performance!
Sullivan’s
Hair Savior
™
Adhesive Breakdown
Hair Savior™ is just that! Finally, a liquid adhesive breakdown that is healthy for your leg hair. Hair Savior™ adhesive breakdown features a proprietary blend of the purest, mild cosmetic grade plant-based ester technologies to naturally attack and gently remove adhesives and touch-ups away from the hair. These specific plant based surfactants have been specially identified for their unique ability to naturally counter-act the tackiness of adhesives, changing their rubberized molecular resin structure to gently dissolve the bond from the hair without any harsh stripping action. This properly balanced pH formula prevents heavy, oily residues and will not create heat. Contains the Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ nourishing vitamin package. Hair Savior™ is the first liquid adhesive breakdown product with added hair vitamins to hydrate and regenerate the hair. Mild and gentle, no harsh chemicals like other removers. Hair Savior™ ... the showman’s choice for repetitive show schedules and leg hair health!

Show cattle is my life and that’s why I trust Andis.

Champions aren’t bred and born overnight. They’re nurtured and refined over decades. I appreciate what it takes to get there, and I’m patient enough to see it through no matter what. For the same reason, I trust Andis clippers and trimmers. After 90 years in the industry, they know what works, and what I expect when preparing to show a champion, like the AGC Super 2 Speed clipper and blocking blade, as well as the full complement of interchangeable blades. LIVESTOCK SUPPLEMENT & CONDITIONER The easy supplement for show-stopping results. Blue ribbons aren’t easy to come by – but fortunately, premium nutrition can be simple. By feeding your animal just a few ounces of ShowBloom a day, you give them essential protein, vitamins and minerals. The all-natural brewer’s yeast formula is palatable and increases digestibility and feed efficiency to create a shiny coat, clear eyes and improved muscling and hoof quality. Those are results that you – and the judges – can appreciate.

Year-End Review – Shining a Spotlight on Your Finances May Brighten Your Future Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley
Review your retirement assets. Whether your retirement is a long way off or right around the corner, it is likely that you’ll have to make periodic adjustments to your retirement portfolio. Make sure the investments you’ve chosen are still an accurate reflection of your risk tolerance and time horizon.
Keep tabs on college funding plans. With college costs reaching astronomical heights, you need to utilize every available college funding resource. Financial aid and scholarships, as well as the Lifetime Learning Credit and Hope Scholarship Credit may help alleviate the college cost crunch. However, aid and tax credits alone generally will not fund your child’s college education. Make sure you’re saving and investing enough to help meet your goals. At a minimum, take advantage of the tax savings offered through an Education IRA.
Assess your income tax picture. You may be able to reduce your tax burden -- sometimes significantly -- by making strategic tax decisions before the end of the year. Your tax professional can alert you to any tax planning strategies that might make sense for your situation.
Review critical documents. Because life’s circumstances continually change, you should review your legal documents and beneficiary designations every year. This will entail carefully combing through any
Set goals for next year and beyond. A year-end review is an excellent time to start thinking about next year and setting some long-term goals. Take a close look at your day-to-day finances to see if you can reduce expenses and save more. Then make an honest assessment of which goals are most important to you and then commit to meeting them.

year-end financial review can be instrumental to your future financial success. However, you may not want to wait until the end of the year to review your financial affairs. Consider doing it during the fall so you’ll have ample time to take any corrective action before year’s end. Here’s a quick look at some of the key issues you should consider when conducting your review.

SO YOU WANT TO COLLECT AND TRANSFER EMBRYOS? Courtesy of Trans Ova Genetics :: By Sara Kober
A
t Trans Ova Genetics, we are often asked by young 4-H and FFA members, as well as high school and college students, about the education and requirements of our “Professional Team” members that perform the hands-on work of collecting and transferring embryos. The livestock industry will need talented young individuals to consider a career in animal agriculture and biotechnology not only to uphold the reputation of the industry, but to continue to make advancements and improvements to meet all of the objectives required of the industry.
What duties are normally performed in the role?
Responsibilities of this role are extensive. The primary duties include the actual collection of oocytes or embryos from the donor female, as well as transfer of resulting embryos to recipients. In addition, pregnancy detection, evaluation of donors and recipients using palpation and ultrasonography, diagnosis and treatment, prescription of drugs and hormones, intra and interstate health documentation of livestock and embryos, and consultation are all elements that are essential to the role.
What attributes, experience and education do i need?
Most importantly, one must possess a passion for the seedstock and livestock industry. Passion and desire will provide an incentive to go the extra mile for a client and their cattle. Personal traits such as organizational skills, attention to detail and work ethic are also important to being successful. There may be long and demanding days that require intense focus and organization. Most in vivo embryo collection that is commonly referred to as “flushing” is performed by licensed veterinarians. A veterinary degree has been necessary to prescribe and administer necessary drugs as well as perform procedures such as embryo collection, pregnancy

determination, cystic ovarian disease, etc. Some states provide a certification program for non-veterinarians. Many of these states have education requirements and may have certification examinations. Significant experience is required to become proficient with donor collection and embryo transfer. In vitro embryo collection involving ultrasonography is again usually performed by veterinarians. It is important to understand each states Veterinary Practice Act for both “flushing” or ovum pick up (OPU) as states vary on both procedures. Regardless of the individual states, Veterinary Practice Act status, the collection and transfer of embryos requires significant experience to become skilled. OPU procedures are even more demanding. Even skilled veterinarians require hundreds of practice procedures as well as continued daily involvement in order to become proficient in harvesting both quantity and quality of oocytes necessary for a successful IVF procedure.
What if i am interested, but do not have the grades or time to attend veterinary school?
Traditional embryo collection and particularly in vitro fertilization procedures take a team to be successful! There are many roles available from embryologists (see “So you want to be an embryologist”), lab technicians, donor and recipient herdsman, information technology, client service, research and development, as well as business and accounting roles.
If you have the passion described above, we encourage you to consider a role in animal production and especially biotechnology. In the next 35 years, the world needs to double animal protein production, and do so in an environmentally sustainable manner. So the opportunities are there. Prepare the foundation by getting a quality education with a focus on math and science, and stay in touch. We would love to hear from you!
Veterinarian Profile: Dr Jon Schmidt Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa Q: WhaT DuTIeS are reQuIreD In yOur rOle?
A: My current duties with Trans Ova can be split into three different roles – Professional Services Veterinarian, Director of Professional Services, and Midwest Business Manager. As a veterinarian, I serve our clients in clinic and on farm by performing embryo collection (flushing), oocyte collection (IVF aspiration), embryo transfers, and I am involved in prescribing synchronization protocols for donors and recipients. I focus my on farm service work in the South Dakota region and spend a lot of time at our satellite center there. I do get involved in a few sick calls and an occasional c-section on the weekends when I’m on call. As a division director, I serve the company’s veterinarians and embryologists by equipping them with the training, equipment, and information they need to serve our clients with consistency and excellence. I am responsible for facilitating communication among all of our teams and we have frequent conference calls to discuss current events, issues, and questions. As a manager I support our Midwest site managers with information and resources to ensure that our operations are delivering on the company’s core values. I am ultimately responsible to make sure our business activities out of the Midwest continue to function successfully and at a high level. With all of this my duties can vary quite a bit from day to day or even hour to hour. It’s not uncommon to spend a few hours flushing cows, change clothes, and head into a meeting, interview, or a several hour session of emails and phone calls.
Q: WhaT TraInInG Or eDuCaTIOn WaS mOST benefICIal fOr yOur rOle?
A: Undergraduate and veterinary school at Iowa State gave me a good knowledge base from which to start my training from and to refer to in times of need. The most effective training occurred on the job and also some during undergrad internships and vet school externships. By far the most beneficial thing obtained from all of my college and first years on the job was the networking and relationships established. This took place at several places – livestock shows and sales, in the classroom, campus activities, continuing education conferences, and through general work experiences. Associating with the right people of influence and working your tail off while doing so will go miles farther than knowing a lot of ‘stuff’. From a leadership standpoint, reading a variety of leadership and business books has helped me continue to grow. We have a personal development program for our leadership team that has provided me with tools to increase my effectiveness.
Q: WhaT ParT Of yOur baCkGrOunD WaS mOST Valuable?
A: Growing up in agriculture on a diversified cattle/pig/crop farm has been most valuable in providing me with career direction. It was instrumental in programming work ethic, common sense, and general abilities in using my hands and farm equipment to solve problems and complete tasks. It also led me to 4-H and without this, I would not have developed a passion for reproduction and genetics in cattle. We showed beef cattle at our local county fair, and from this I grew an interest in the genetic background of my projects. I grew up being a pedigree nut. I scoured the show magazines looking for the next great bull advertised by the highly recognized cattle operations, many of which I now get to work with today. I was on the meats judging team in college, and this gave me a whole new appreciation for the cattle industry as a whole and how its products flow through to the consumer. Being

raised on a feedlot especially helped me connect with this. Growing up in agriculture led me to being part of an agricultural fraternity (Alpha Gamma Rho), which encourages all members to develop as leaders and become involved on campus. Instead of livestock judging, I chose to serve the Block and Bridle club as president so that I could continue developing as a leader. I’m confident these pivotal events would not have happened if I did not grow up on a farm and in agriculture. Instead, I probably would have gone into human medicine (and not enjoyed my career near as much as I do today!).
Q: WhaT DO yOu enJOy The mOST abOuT yOur rOle?
A: I really enjoy interacting with our clients and team members and helping to serve their desires and needs. I work with some of the best cattle people and teammates in the world! I love hearing about outstanding results from clients and seeing the calves we produce for them. I’ve always enjoyed math, so I enjoy following the procedure statistics of our teams. Travelling to many, many ranches and seeing different ways of getting things done has been educational and enjoyable as well. Being able to contribute as part of a strong team that continues to make progress in advancing reproductive technology in order to help the world meet its increasing global protein needs is very fulfilling and motivating.
Q: WhaT DO yOu enJOy The leaST?
A: While I love working with lots of people on lots of different ranches, long days and being away from home can wear on a person, particularly when kids enter life’s equation. One must be diligent in maintaining a balance between work and family. I’m working on this. The other thing I dislike is poor results. Way too much time, work, and money goes into this business for getting bad results to be fun. Unfortunately, we are dealing with biology here and so you end up having to accept the fact that things won’t go great 100% of the time. We can only hope and strive to get there!

gray Show cattle & umbarger Show feeds are excited to join forces and bring you a monthly article, in hopes to help juniors across the country. We hope the variety of topics brought to you in each issue are found to be beneficial and that juniors can find ways to incorporate them in to their very own programs.
you have one shot.... make it count In the last issue, we focused on getting your club calf project started right in terms of feed and nutrition. In this Issue Insight, we at Gray Show Cattle would like to continue on that path to a good start. Nutrition is a key area in a getting off to a good start and we encourage all of our clients to get started on a quality Umbarger product; if you have any questions, see contacts below. Let’s focus on a few other important items in this article however. Getting off on the right foot and having success in the ring starts at home and starts early. Some things to make note of include: overall health and showmanship. It goes without saying that the health of your project is of utmost importance. Keeping an eye out for runny noses as the fall season brings colder temps, cloudy eyes, and lack of appetite can be precursors to larger issues to come. Keeping a good vaccination program will help with such issues. For the primary focus of this article, let’s focus on showmanship. While it might seem like a long time until the first show, it is essential to begin work at home early. Many times, several people focus on hair work and that alone; while that is very important and will be a topic of conversation to come in an Issue Insight in the near future, I feel that showmanship skills get overlooked. Let’s face it, you can have the hairiest, best dressed animal at the show, and if you can’t get that animal shown, you will likely not get too far. A few pointers that may help you with this important piece to success. First, get the show stick on them early. While clipping my help and I, often realize that it may be the first time a show stick has come into contact with the animal. While frustrating, it is important to note that instead of relaxing the animal, this motion will excite them. This obviously is not the goal here. Second, practice a showmanship at home. Weekly walking and setting up of your calf as imagined in a show setting will train your project to set up easier and save you time in the show ring. As I tell many of our clients, you may only get one chance to make an impression on the judge-make it count. If you wait months after your new project arrives in the barn, it will become increasingly harder to get them used to what is expected of them. Lastly, practice all facets of showing your calf. Have a friend or family member assess your project as if they are the judge of the show. Make sure to make eye contact, step back from your project to emphasize the calf only, if a steer, have them handle your calf as will be done in summer month; these things will ensure that you are at peak performance in the show ring. If you are unprofessional when working your showmanship skills at home, you will likely be that way at the show as well. We sure hopes this makes your showing and overall experience a better one. Remember to start with the right nutrition in mind, stay alert to health problems, and start early with your showmanship practice. As we say, you may only get one shot….make it count!

PROFESSOR TO PRODUCER
BULLET POINTS FOR WEANING CALVES By Dr. Paul Walker | Illinois State University
ences say corn silage may predispose calves to diarrhea and BRD. • Feed calves all the long stem, highest quality grass hay you can afford or find. • Providing weaning calves free access to a big, round bale of oat straw sometimes helps calves maintain rumen function. • Any supplement fed to calves should contain high proportions of distillers grains (DGS) and/or soybean hulls (SH). Research conducted at Illinois State University observed calves fed supplements containing DGS and/or SH had fewer outbreaks of BRD, lower mortality rates and less morbidity than calves fed shelled cornbased supplements.
is weaning time for spring-born calves and almost every university beef specialist in the country has authored an article regarding calf weaning. Therefore, I’m going to try and narrow the focus of this article to the effects nutrition has on weaning beef calves. • Calves accustomed to a grain-based diet (creep fed) for at least 30 days accept weaning with less stress than calves not creep fed. • Calves familiar to automatic water fountains will drink more water and eat more feed during weaning. • Set automatic water fountains to overflow a little. This may encourage timid calves to drink. • Remove or tie down the floating balls of heaterless (frost-free) water fountains. Pasture calves may not know how to depress the balls to drink. • Calves that eat and drink more will cope with the stress of weaning more effectively and will have a lower incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). • NRC estimates that calves require 12.5% crude protein diet. My experience says calves fed a 14% to 15% CP diet during weaning have more success avoiding problems. • Do not feed weaning calves legume hay. Legumes encourage bloat and diarrhea. • Do not feed calves corn silage or haylage during the first two weeks of weaning or during the receiving period (first two weeks in the feedlot). My experi-
• DGS and SH should be fed in pellet form and not as a meal. Intake of a meal is not as consistent as the intake of a pelleted feedstuff. Pellets stimulate greater rumen function and more cud chewing than meals. • Research at Illinois State University found calves fed grass hay and offered supplements at 2% of body weight had greater weight gain during the first 21 days in the feedlot than calves fed supplements at 1% of body weight. Calves fed supplement at 2% of body weight maintained the weight gain advantage through the first 84 days on feed. • For calves fed grass hay (any roughage) ad libitum, increase the grain portion of the diet one pound every third day until the calves are on the desired concentrate ratio i.e. 50:50, 75:25, 80:20, 85:15, 90:10 grain:forage. • During weaning calves should receive an oral antibiotic to help prevent BRD. I encourage feedlot operators to avoid feeding sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics, except during weaning. Once the “ball” is out of the calves, stop feeding the antibiotic. • During the receiving period (the first 21 to 28 days following arrival at a feedlot) I recommend feedlot operators avoid feeding sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics. • My recommended antibiotic feeding regimen during weaning and/or during the feedlot receiving period is to feed each calf a therapeutic dose of antibiotic for the first 4 days on feed; feed no antibiotic for 10 to 14 days; feed a therapeutic dose of antibiotic to each calf for 4 days. Thereafter, do not feed antibiotics except for an ionophore (such as Rumensin or Bovatec).

• Never let the bunk run out of hay, but never let wet, moldy or stale feed build up. • Keep all feed (hay or grain) as fresh as possible. • Feeding twice a day is more effective than once a day. Feeding newly arrived calves three times a day is more effective than twice a day – unless the temperature is really hot. • Walk the lots frequently. I like to walk the lots early in the morning before feeding. However, walking the lots immediately after feeding is acceptable • Check calves that do not get up. Healthy calves that get up leisurely should stretch. But, startled calves may not stretch and sick calves will not stretch. • Even if using a mixer wagon to feed a TMR, long stem grass or oat straw hay should still be provided. Feeding therapeutic levels of antibiotics for a short predetermined period of time kills invading bacteria. Waiting 10 to 14 days to feed a second therapeutic dose of antibiotic should be effective in killing a second invasion of bacteria. Feeding subtherapeutic levels of a particular antibiotic for prolonged periods of time may contribute to increased bacterial resistance to an antibiotic. The 4 day on - 10 day off - 4 day on therapeutic regimen has worked well in the ISU Farm feedlot to help control BRD during calf weaning and during the feedlot receiving period. As many of you know, I retired September 30 after 33 rewarding years at Illinois State University. Because I’m not ready to sit-on-the-porch and watch-the-grass-grow, let me know if you hear of an interesting job offer. I may consider a second career if it includes cattle. The cattle industry has been good to me – the cup is always half full and I always have a good day!!

What’s it like to be a
Ceo of the beef board What is youR backgRound? I wasn’t raised on a farm or ranch, but found a fascination with agriculture when I was in high school. My mom was a Lutheran minister who specialized in starting up rural churches, so I was exposed to ag a lot growing up, but that also meant we moved around a lot. I lived in Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania growing up. Would you descRibe foR us What you Really do. As the CEO of the Beef Board, it’s my job to make sure that all the dollars collected under the Beef Checkoff are spent in accordance with the legislation. I also get to provide input into the programs of promotion, research and education that we fund. Under the law, we must award Checkoff monies to independent industry organizations to do this important work to support and grow consumer demand for beef. hoW did you get into this line of WoRk? I’ve been working for beef producers in non-profits for more than 21 years. My first job was setting type for a livestock paper in Denver, from there, I’ve done producer communications, marketing, public relations, membership, evaluation, and now management—all working for producer boards of directors. What do you like about youR job? I love working for beef producers – I guess that’s clear! Just like Thomas Jefferson, I think people who care of land and animals, who keep rural communities vital, are the bedrock of America.
Polly Ruhland
What aRe the toughest challenges foR What you do? When I tell other non-profit administrators that my board is 103 members, they can’t believe it! Plus, we have more than 200 members of our advisory committees (which are joint with the Federation of State Beef Councils). I guess two of the toughest things I do are making sure we operate with as close to a consensus as possible, and also explaining the complicated Beef Checkoff system to producers. do you need a college degRee in youR PRofession? I believe that experience is the best teacher, but education helps you learn how to learn from your experience and your mistakes. I have a master’s degree in agriculture from Colorado State University. WheRe should somebody go to get staRted in youR line of WoRk? Do an internship with a breed association, or a state cattlemen’s association or state beef council, to see if you like non-profit work, and you like working for boards of directors. It’s a different breed of cat. What is a tyPical day on the job like foR you? I read a lot—approvals, projects, evaluations and that kind of thing. I also do a lot of communicating with producers, staff, and contractors. I can’t stress enough how important clear and frequent communication is, with management positions particularly. What Would most suRPRise a student about youR caReeR? People always seem surprised that the cattlemen hired a woman for this job. They might also be surprised at how many hours I work, because I’m available to my staff and board of directors 24/7. That makes for a lot of hours.
anything you Wish someone Would have told you When you WeRe in school? If there is anything you really, really want to do—publish a book, travel the world, invent something amazing, train for the Olympics, do it when you are young! Try everything as early as you can. Only then will you find something you love, and believe me you need to do something you love with your life. You’ll spend too many hours at it not to love it.

n the livestock show circuit, if you’re not moving forward you’ll be left standing. From shifts in type and kind in the ring to the latest products found in a show box, change is inevitable and progress is key. This continual progression in the industry is what keeps the creators of livestock products in the barn, on their toes and endlessly innovating.
Meet the Makers
No one knows more about product innovation than the team at Sullivan Supply, one of the leading producers of livestock grooming supplies. With 24 years under their belt and a reputation for the most state-of-theart products on the market, they know what it takes to successfully envision, produce and sell. John Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa, started Sullivan Supply when he was just 23 years old. He grew up showing cattle and spent a few years managing show strings in Texas and Nevada, but was ready to get back to the Midwest and wanted to manage his own business. “I didn’t have the large land base to go back and start raising cattle, but I knew the industry really well and had a natural liking to create things and make different products,” Sullivan says. From there, it was all about perseverance. “I was from the school of hard knocks,” Sullivan admits. “I was truly self-taught.”
146 November/December 2013 • theshowcircuit.com
Another industry guru who knows a thing or two about product development is Dave Guyer, Founder and CEO of Natural Solutions for Livestock in Robinson, Ill. Established in 2004, this business venture started when Guyer was approached by Todd Kennedy and Brent Bolen with the idea for a new joint supplement product, now called Natural Stride. With a little reluctance and a lot of faith, the trio launched their product with a goal of selling one ton in their first year. Twelve months later, they’d moved more than 15.5 tons and soon, Guyer became the sole owner of the brand. Along with his wife, Lucy, and daughters, Ashtin and Nalaney, Guyer has worked tirelessly to grow this family-owned business into one of the industry leaders.
ViTa hair VoluMizer This is one of Sullivan Supply’s newest products, Vita Hair Volumizer, in the development phase (top) and as a final retail product (bottom). From start to finish, this product took over two years to develop, produce and test before it was sold to the public.
“When we started, it was just Lucy, my mom, the girls, and me,” Guyer says. “We would get the product in bulk at the warehouse, hand package it and put the labels on ourselves.” As the company grew, the Guyers moved to pre-packaged products and brought another family member on board. Guyer’s aunt, Joan Briggs, stepped in to help as the secretary for Natural Solutions and also handles product shipping. The family now serves thousands of customers nationwide, and Natural Solutions products have a major presence in the showring.
concept to creation
So where do the ideas for all of these products come from? “A product usually gets started because there’s a need for it,” Guyer says. “You have to identify that need – then you chase it.” Sullivan often relies on his showring background to help inspire product ideas. “It’s important to be involved in the show part of the industry and really get hands on,” he says. “Whether you’re at a show or working on cattle at home, the little things start to hit you. From there, you can create an entirely new product that is out of the box, or you can look at how to make an existing product better. I am a challenger – I want to challenge myself, my products and my employees.” Once the idea for a product is on the table, the real work begins. Sullivan says his team asks two essential questions before they start the development process: does the market want it and is it a good product? “You don’t want to create a new product just to create a new product,” Sullivan explains. “You have to make sure it has staying power.” Perseverance is also essential in this line of work. “Sometimes you have a good idea, but the technology hasn’t caught up yet. You just have to stick with it,” Sullivan says. When the blueprints for a product are in place, another team comes in – manufacturing. Everyone handles this a little differently. While the Sullivan team does a lot of their manufacturing on-site, Guyer works with a handful of firms across the U.S. who make the products, then ship them to his warehouse for sale and distribution. He likens this outsourcing to construction.
Dave Guyer along with his wife, Lucy, and their daughters Ashtin (l) and Nalaney (r) not only manage their family owned-and-operated business, Natural Solutions, but also compete nationally in the show ring with both cattle and showpigs. “You may know you want to build a house and where you want to build it, but you don’t actually do the building – the carpenter does,” he explains. “This is the same kind of idea.”
Passing the Test
Of course, things are rarely perfect the first time around – this is especially true when working with product innovation and improvement.
lation. The manufacturer had to tweak the makeup of the product, called Show-a-Peel, before the team could take it to market. The Sullivan team also puts products through extensive testing before releasing them to the public. Scott Kinzer, Director of New Product Development, oversees this process.
“It’s really a trial-and-error process,” Guyer says. “It takes some time playing with a product before it can actually sell.”
“Sometimes we can get a product to work after the first prototype,” Kinzer explains. “Other times, we might go through 50 samples before we get something to work how we want.”
One of his product lines used in the showpig industry, cofounded by Todd Caldwell and Travis Platt, actually turned pigs orange with the first formu-

ing sure things are just right before their customers put it to use. “As a rule, if we wouldn’t use a product on the cattle at Sullivan Farms, then we’re not going to sell it, because it’s not in the best interest of our customers,” Kinzer says.
Guyer also explains that although the Natural Solutions products don’t come under FDA jurisdiction, a lot of time is spent on regulations and labeling, as they can vary from state to state.
laws & labeling
Once a product has completed the conception, production and testing phases, it still has to clear the regulatory red tape before it’s sold to the public. “Our product line is so vast, and every project has a slightly different approach,” Kinzer says. “When we manufacture any product, we come under very strict standards. Each one has to be designed or formulated correctly for outstanding performance, long-term durability and safety.”
John Sullivan (l) and Scott Kinzer (r) have worked together for over 20 years innovating and producing livestock grooming supplies. “We are students of experience,” Sullivan says of himself and his long-time friend and colleague.
NaTural SoluTioNS WarehouSe Joan Briggs, who serves as the secretary and handles product shipping for Natural Solutions, moves product in the warehouse at Guyer’s farm in Robinson, Ill.
Living the Dream
Sullivan and Kinzer, who grew up together in the cattle business before becoming coworkers, say this is their passion and their way of life. “I feel very fortunate I get to work with a life-long friend,” Sullivan says. “We feed off each other and enjoy what we do so much – it’s not work.” Kinzer echoes that sentiment, and insists the frustrating days are worth the end result. “There are a lot of days I want to pull my hair out, but when we get to the end and have a product that works – I am so proud,” he says. Guyer’s advice is simple – never say “never.” “I promise you in the beginning of this, I never thought it would happen,” he says. “If you have an idea or dream, don’t be too hard headed to chase it, because you never know what it will turn into. It’s been life changing for my family.” Today, after years of dedication to their trade, Sullivan and Guyer are truly living their dream – they have found success for themselves and their families and have become household names in the livestock industry.

F
“As the partners and founders of Embryos On Snow, we are proud to generate a program that recognizes leading young people who are a part of our industry,” said Christy Collins. “The primary goal of La Prix is to allow this sale to give back to an outstanding youth who has a dream and a goal of building a business or starting a project at the front of their young, professional life.” Embryos on Snow is an equisite genetic offering from leading producers nationwide. This sale provides producers a rare opportunity to purchase top club calf matings of Composite, Charolais, and Hereford genetics as well as elite purebred or maternal seedstock including Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Red Angus and Shorthorn features. LYING COW GENETICS Offers state-of-the-art breeding facility, serves as IVF collection sIte
Flying Cow Genetics, a newly established cattle reproduction facility and fertility lab, is now offering cattlemen a variety of advanced reproductive services in the convenience of a single location. The Welch, Okla., facility is headed up by longtime veterinarian Tony Small D.V.M., and will provide a full line of cattle donor and reproductive management services, including collection for in vitro fertilization (IVF) through a partnership with Trans Ova Genetics. The partnership with Trans Ova makes it one of only a few cattle reproduction facilities in the Oklahoma tri-state area to offer the IVF service. In addition to IVF, the new facility is providing conventional flushing, freezing and storage of embryos, embryo transfers, artificial insemination (AI), donor and recipient-cow housing, along with breeding bull exams and testing. The Flying Cow Genetics site is located on 2,700 acres of improved pastures and has a number of large grass pens equipped with automatic water systems, which are being utilized to host donor cows, while additional acreage at the location is used for recipients. Small hopes the facility’s location will provide the geographic area, known for large numbers of cattle, with an option for reproduction management without having to travel. “We are in the heart of cow-calf country, and most of our customers are excited to get to work with us because of that,” Small said. “And, most of the customers we work with won’t have to travel as far for this type of service. There are multiple purebred operations in this vicinity that utilize our services.” The Flying Cow Genetics facility also includes offices, a
conference room, housing, and an enclosed squeeze chute system, integrated with a built-in water pressure system for cleaning. The system was designed by Small, who after years of experience has learned the value of having a clean, efficient work environment. Small has an extensive history as an embryologist and is respected for his work as a veterinarian, working in the field for more than 25 years. In addition to working with clients, the staff at Flying Cow Genetics plans to collaborate with local high schools and colleges to schedule AI and palpation classes. According to Small, this will be an opportunity to foster interest in embryology, which he thinks has been in decline in the last several years. “When I go to American Embryo Transfer Association meetings, there are very few young people involved,” Small said. “And, I hope the classes can help address common misconceptions some people have with various breeding techniques.” While Flying Cow Genetics has a strong regional customer base already in the making, the extensiveness of the staff’s capabilities and the facility’s amenities are drawing customers from far outside local boundaries. Customers have come from as far as Oregon, California and New York. “Some of that just has to do with who you know and are comfortable working with,” Small said. “We serve a community of people who like to know what to expect and appreciate hard work and efficiency. We have tried to provide that in our service for years, and now I feel like we have the facility to provide more options.”

- All the hard work and early mornings finally pay off, and you get to see everyone’s calves that have been tucked away all summer. The atmosphere is irreplaceable. What do you want to be when you grow up? Steer Jockey and Feed Nutritionist What quality/skill to you have that you’re most proud of? Stunning personality Favorite subject in school: English Would you rather dance, play cards or hula hoop? play cards One weird habit/skill/fact about you: I have OCD when it comes to barn cleanliness and everyday routines. Favorite show memory so far: Winning the Illinois State Fair Least favorite show day task: Breaking calves down after the show . Most embarrassing stock show moment: Probably when I was younger, and it was my first time twining a steer for the State Fair open show. It was my brother’s steer, and I did front legs. It looked so poor that my brother made me show the steer, and I found myself trying to put my legs back together in the ring as I was sent to the middle of the class. The judge’s reasons were “this steer seems to literally be falling apart as the class goes on.”

Blaire Wildy AJCA Area 6 Vice President Determination--firm or unwavering adherence to one’s purpose. I start out with the definition of determination to set the stage for introduction of a fellow showman that I truly admire. In my opinion, this showman takes hard work and perseverance to a whole new level. He has such a desire to show cattle and has never let a health issue hold him back. Connor Miller, 15, is a sophomore at Buffalo Island Central High School in Monette, Arkansas. Connor was diagnosed with Gaucher’s Disease as a baby. This is a rare genetic lipid storage disease. He receives IV treatments twice monthly to battle this illness. The symptoms Connor suffers from are curvature of the spine and severe fatigue. I say all of this to then in turn tell you, that with all of the symptoms and hardships of his illness, you will never once hear a complaint come from his mouth. Connor began his show career almost two years ago. He started showing an Angus heifer which has now been turned out to begin his herd. He now is showing an Exotic Commercial heifer who is calls Josie. He is excited to show Josie in this year’s Arkansas State Fair. Long days of showing wear on him physically, but Connor has learned that pushing through the pain and persevering will reap rewards in the end. He has the mindset to never let his health problems hinder him from being the best showman he can be. If anything, it has taught him to push even harder. Connor has had the disappointments throughout life of not being able to participate in contact sports and other activities. He is very thankful that although showing livestock is hard work, it doesn’t discriminate against children with health issues. Connor thoroughly enjoys meeting new friends at the shows on the weekends. He hopes that one day the responsibility and hard work of showing livestock will help him to prosper as an adult. As a young adult, Connor deals with his health issue like a champ, but the main thing Connor wants you to know about him is he never wants anyone to look at him any different than you would a perfectly healthy kid. Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” P lease look for Connor and his heifer Josie at this year’s Arkansas State Fair.

EarthFirst!
triEs to sabotagE WolF hunting sEason
a
recent National Public Radio (NPR) program featured efforts by the radical EarthFirst! Organization to undermine wolf hunting in Montana and Idaho through the use of what they call a sabotage manual. NPR’s Dan Boyce pointed out hunting restrictions on wolves are looser, licenses are cheaper and hunters are allowed to kill more wolves as part of intentional state efforts to reduce wolf numbers. Boyce said, “The gray wolf was removed from the endangered species list a couple of years ago, and since then, states in the Great Lakes region and northern Rockies have started hunting seasons to bring down wolf numbers they say far exceed minimum population goals.” However, not surprisingly radical activists don’t believe that wolf numbers are as big as reported and certainly don’t approve of hunting them. Authorities say the tactics being promoted by EarthFirst! to disrupt the wolf season are illegal; but breaking the law isn’t something the group – named by the FBI as a domestic terrorists – cares much about.
Boyce explained, “So the group’s 12-page sabotage manual suggests people work to stop wolf hunts physically: following hunters into the field, blowing whistles. Mostly, the manual details how to destroy wolf traps. And if an advocate finds a wolf already trapped, the manual lays out strategies for releasing that wolf back into the wild.” One can’t help but think the wolves might take care of any activist dumb enough to release an injured, dangerous, wild animal from a trap.

he Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is pleased to announce a new collaboration with its long-time corporate sponsor Plum Creek aimed at maximizing the educational and recreational opportunities for deserving youth, disabled, military, first-time and limited opportunity hunters. “Through Plum Creek’s generosity, QDMA will be able to provide access to this unique property for educational and hunting purposes to hundreds of youth and other deserving individuals, all while showcasing the benefits of Quality Deer Management,” said QDMA CEO Brian Murphy. “We hope this pilot project will lead to many other similar initiatives which provide training and access to the most deserving.” “Plum Creek is very pleased to partner with QDMA in this worthwhile project,” said Plum Creek’s Director of Recreational Lease Management Glenn E. Johnson. “QDMA provides the best tools and expertise to successfully achieve our outreach objectives for this property. With impressive initial support from

the Greenwood Community and Lakelands Branch, we are excited to see the first events later this fall.” The first endeavor of its kind in QDMA’s history, this collaboration was made possible with Plum Creek providing a generous gift of a multi-year lease to a 500-acre property located outside of Greenwood, South Carolina. QDMA’s Lakelands Branch will manage the property, which includes a three-bedroom house and a fishing pond, with support from QDMA. The property will also be used for QDMA Branch events. Anyone interested in providing support for the hunting property and its mission should contact QDMA’s Lakelands Branch vice president Karman Bedenbaugh at (864) 992-3312.

• The Shiawassee Flats QDM Cooperative, which surrounds the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Michigan, now includes 27 landowners and over 12,000 acres. • The broad interests of the Shiawassee Flats QDM Cooperative include improving wildlife habitat, improving communication between adjoining landowners, increasing hunting participation, educating neighbors about land management, building relationships between neighbors and to provide a platform for education about deer biology and management. The specific goals of the Cooperative include increasing the size of the local deer herd (following an EHD outbreak), increasing habitat diversity, balancing the adult sex ratio, balancing the buck age structure and to establish a network of resources for residents on how to better manage their property and deer.

he Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) helped establish three wildlife management cooperatives in March – two in Oklahoma and one in Michigan – that now encompass more than 70,000 acres of public and private hunting land. The three cooperatives were established around federal wildlife refuges to unite public and private hunting lands for better deer habitat and hunting. Wildlife management cooperatives (WMCs) are groups of neighboring hunters working together to improve wildlife and/or habitat management programs. These three cooperatives were made possible thanks in part to a $50,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), and all three were launched in March of 2013.
• The Washita River Deer Management Association, which surrounds the Washita NWR in western Oklahoma, now includes over 30 landowners/members and more than 44,000 acres. • The broad interests of the Washita River Deer Management Association include managing the land for deer, turkey and quail. The specific goals of the association include increasing the buck age structure, balancing buck:doe ratios, balancing deer density with what the habitat can support, providing youth hunting opportunities, providing opportunities for educational meetings, increasing quail numbers and the possibility of enrolling in Oklahoma’s DMAP program. • The Deep Fork Deer Management Association, which surrounds the Deep Fork NWR in eastern Oklahoma, now includes over 40 landowners/members and more than 14,000 acres. • The broad interests of the Deep Fork Deer Management Association include managing the land for deer, turkey and waterfowl while also further developing bottomland hardwood and upland prairie habitats. The specific goals of the association include protecting young bucks, estimating deer herd size, data collection, establishing and maintaining food plots and controlling Bermuda grass.

HUNTERS HITduring
M
GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
any hunters planning to utilize federal land were surprised to find their access cut off during the government shutdown when some 329 federal wildlife refuges were closed to hunting due to the impasse, according to Yahoo News.
“People are traveling hundreds of miles this time of year and getting to their favorite hunting or fishing holes and finding they’ve closed,” said Miles Moretti, president of the Utah-based Mule Deer Foundation in an October 7 news article. Some hunters’ lifelong dreams were dashed. “In Colorado, hunters who’ve waited 12 years to hunt elk are being forced to turn in their tags,” said Gaspar Perricone, co-director of the Bull Moose Sportsmen’s Alliance.
However, not all public lands were closed. Minnesota was able to keep its wildlife management areas open, as one example. And the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Association reversed course and re-opened waterfowl production areas that include more than 2 milion acres in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Montana after an outcry. That’s not to mention the economic impact on rural communities, outdoor retailers, hunting guides and others who depend on this time of the year for the majority of their income due to hunting and fishing. Conservation programs were also shutdown during the standoff. While legislators finally got their act together and the government is again open for business, lost time during this crucial season can’t be made up in some cases. An article from “Think Progress” also quoted Moretti of the Mule Deer Foundation. “One of the big factors that we’re seeing is that habitat projects for wildlife that are long-term are being shut down. Some of these projects are time-sensitive. They need to be done in the fall. They may not occur this year at all, or they may have to be put off and not done. Those are critical to some of our wildlife

species, especially some of our big game animals.” “These industries have already faced the axe from budget cuts and sequestration, as environmental conservation efforts important to hunters and fishers faced budget cuts in recent years, including under sequestration at the beginning of 2013,” said Dr. Steve Williams, president of the Wildlife Management Institute and a former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “Sequestration included a 17% cut to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. And the most recent House Republican budget plan includes a 27% cut to the service’s budget and includes no funding for land, water, wetland, or wildlife conservation grants. We’re tired of non-proportional cuts to national resource interests.”

Atlas, Continued from page 175
5. Coupled with the very high energy needs of the animals was the fact that most of the feed the cattle were currently eating was quite low in energy. Cattle grazing lush green grass makes a beautiful picture, but the reality is that lush, rapidly growing green grass is very high in moisture and low in energy per pound of feed consumed. The unusually large rainfall in September had created this rapidly growing grass in many areas. Under normal weather conditions, cattle were able to consume large quantities of grass to meet and even exceed their energy needs. But under blizzard conditions, it was not possible for them to consume adequate amounts of forage to meet their much higher than normal energy needs. 6. To try to escape or reduce the harsh wind, cattle will walk with the wind and seek areas of shelter, such as draws and ravines. Walking through heavy, wet and deep snow increased their energy needs even more. The severity of the snowfall also meant that the animals were walking blind, and could easily fall in to gullies, walk into a stock dam or creek, or gather into a fence corner and face crushing and trampling. rhea Virus (BVDV). Respiratory diseases in cattle generally have an “incubation period” of 7 to 14 days. Therefore, ranchers might expect that cattle affected by the blizzard could break with these illnesses over the next two weeks (after the blizzard). Weaned calves may be more susceptible to coccidiosis as well. This condition will present as bloody stools, along with dehydration and depression in more severely affected calves. “Prompt identification of affected calves and treatment with individual or feed-based medications is important. Ranchers should consult with their veterinarian whether feed- or water-grade antibiotics, especially in weaned calves, would be appropriate for any of these conditions. In spring calving herds, the storm hit in the midst of ranchers’ normal preparations for weaning. Herds were in various stages of the process, anywhere from having calves weaned already to calves having their first pre-weaning vaccination, to calves that had not had pre-weaning vaccinations at all. Long-term stress has the effect of inhibiting the immune system against infectious diseases, but it also inhibits the body’s response to vaccines. Ranchers should give the calves and their immune systems 7 to 14 days following the blizzard event to recover from the stress before giving initial or booster doses of vaccines. “Vaccinations will be less effective in cattle that are still under the influence of cortisol due to stress. In cattle, it is generally considered that the effect of stresses on the body are additive. This means that any sort of transportation, processing, or weaning will add to the stresses already encountered by cows and calves going through the blizzard, or faced with moving through snowbanks or muddy lots. Likewise, ranchers should hold off on any processing, weaning, or long-distance transporting of cattle for 7 to 14 days following the weather event. The best source of information regarding animal health in adverse conditions is the local veterinarian. There is no one more qualified to offer advice for prevention and treatment in light of local conditions.
“The blizzard also coincides with the traditional marketing window for spring calves. If at all possible, ranchers should consider delaying marketing until the calves have had time to recover from the added stress load. Feedlots or backgrounders who purchase calves who have undergone these conditions should do all they can to minimize stress and provide as much TLC as possible. Feeders should consult with their veterinarian concerning timing of arrival vaccinations and possible preventative strategies.”
Ways you can help
As we all know, the agriculture community is something special and when someone needs help you can bet friends far and wide will rally to support fellow farmers and ranchers. Here is a list of resources compiled by BEEF magazine where you can contribute to helping these fellow producers get back on their feet. 1. soUth dakota cattle locator
This Facebook page offers a central location to help connect ranchers who have lost or found cattle and return them to their owners.
2. blizzard ranch relief and aid
This Facebook page is a catch-all for information about the blizzard. Check back daily for updates on the storm’s devastation, as well as new resources for ranchers.
3. heifers for soUth dakota
According to this Facebook page, “This is a group for those who are wanting to pledge a heifer, be it a bred yearling or a replacementquality weanling for a rancher in South Dakota. Let’s reach out to our neighbors in their time of need. This will be a 501-c-3 not-for-profit group. The focus is on providing breeding stock to family-type ranches whose primary income is from agriculture. All are encouraged to help in any way they can, be that informing potential donors, hauling livestock, coordinating brand and health inspections or donating dollars towards fuel. All livestock are appreciated, but I challenge those giving to give an animal that they would be proud to own, with the focus on quality breeding stock.”
4. black hills area commUnity foUndation’s soUth dakota rancher relief fUnd The South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund was established on Oct. 8, 2013 by Black Hills Area Community Foundation (BHACF) to provide support and relief assistance to those in the agriculture industry impacted by the blizzard of Oct. 4-7, 2013. The fund will be administered by BHACF in cooperation with the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association for the direct benefit of the livestock producers impacted by this devastating blizzard.
5. VolUnteers for sd ranchers
There are many volunteers willing to help gather, move, sort, and haul livestock. Many have horses and four-wheelers and are willing to travel to the ranchers in need. If you are a rancher who needs help with these tasks, please call 605-274-1407 or 605-274-1408.
6. agchat foUndation offers sUpport
With a goal of raising $500,000, the 501(c)3 organization is able to gather donations and provide 100% of the contributions to rancher led organizations in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming, including the Rancher Relief Fund established by Black Hills Community Foundation. Funds will be equally distributed between the states. AgChat Foundation has received the support of many agricultural organizations and agribusinesses such as American Farm Bureau Federation and Tyson Foods. Additionally, the foundation is working with rancher run organizations in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. Also, the Show Circuit’s Facebook page has a link to specially made sweatshirts that are being sold with all proceeds going to the Ranchers Relief Fund. Get one today!
