Owned by Show Cattle People,
FOR SHOW CATTLE PEOPLE! We have a driving passion for the show industry. Striving to formulate NEW, modern show products for you! Hide & Hair
The hottest NEW Hair growth product.
Not only has Hide & Hair been shown to grow hair, but it also encourages skin health which is essential for optimum hair growth. It contains kelp and seaweed which has been shown to lower body temperature. Hide & Hair contains no melatonin. With melatonin, there is a point where hair growth comes to a peak and then it sheds, but with Hide & Hair you are able to achieve consistent hair growth. Initial reorders have been very strong!
Instructional DVD’s by Dave Guyer These superior quality DVD’s are stuffed full of great information to help you succeed in the show ring. Dave is a tremendous fitter, educator and cattleman. He reveals significant information that gives you a competitive advantage. Five different DVD’s: Selection and Feeding, Daily Care, Clipping, Fitting and Showmanship.
NEW!!
Sullivan’s PEACE Pellets FLAIR
NEW!!
Flair is a tremendous feed supplement that contains the perfect combination of proprietary nutrients to promote the growth of luxurious, full, fresh, hair coats. Originally created by the Wilcox Family of Indiana, they consider Flair the “secret ingredient” to their family’s tremendous show ring success.
This pelleted feed supplement is fed daily to calm and take the edge off show cattle. Mixes easily with your daily feed ration. Provides a calming effect during daily stressful times and allows the exhibitor to handle show animals more professionally. It also helps to break animals and take stress off. A Great New Product!
NEW!!
Fitting Tip From The Pro’s With the arrival of your calves this fall, here are a few things to get you off to a good start: Check with the breeder to assure the calf has been propBarry Nowatzke erly vaccinated. Take your time when breaking your calf to minimize stress. After washing your calf the first time, use a heavy coat of Kleen Sheen. Comb and blow the sheen into the hair, then apply a heavy coat of Final Bloom to the entire body, including the legs. Continue to blow while applying more Final Bloom to any dry skin or dandruff areas. This will help to get the hide in better condition, promote hair growth, and train the hair.
Shop at Sullivan’s for the showman on your Christmas List. Check out our on-line specials at www.sullivansupply.com

P roud Jazz x D Bar T Cowboy Justin Sullivan Show Cattle
Champion ShorthornPlus at Oklahoma State Fair
Jazzman is proving himself to be a leader in the industry!!! These calves are great, with a one-of-akind look! He's working great on Heat Wave daughters and many others. You will get colored roans, reds, or blacks, with perfectly colored red necks coming from Charolais, blacks, and even Hereford cows. His calves are big boned, great haired, and cool looking! Even the blacks are built like crossbreds. Look for his calves to be a new leader for the industry!!
Try this one to down-size and make them even stouter and sounder. His mother is a big-time donor with proven genetics all over his pedigree. W here else could you get all of this!!!

Showmanship Points by Division
Oklahoma Club Calf Association - October ‘10 Hello from OCCA, Fall show season is here! By the time you read this, Oklahoma’s state fairs will be here and gone. Hope everyone was successful. The weather in Oklahoma is dry. Last weekend I drove through northern Oklahoma, and I never saw so much dust from wheat being drilled. Pray for rain. We need it! Jackpot show are just around the corner. Check the website for the schedule. We will post new shows when we get them. Start checking your points to see if they are correct. And don’t forget to make sure your district is listed correctly. Again, we want to thank our Platinum sponsors: Elite Trailers, C&M Trailers, Purina, Cruel Girl, and Cinch. Thanks for all you do. I want to thank again the adult board for every thing you do. You make it easy. See you at the shows.

Rethinking your Portfolio for Rising Rates During the recent recession, we witnessed U.S. Treasury yields traveling down a one-way street, heading south through a series of historical lows. That happened, in part, as investors sought safety, even if it meant lower returns. At the same time, you probably benefited from that interestrate scenario if you took out a mortgage or refinanced other loans at extremely low rates. Now, as the general financial picture improves and investors get comfortable taking on more risk, low-interest safe-havens lose their luster. In a rising rate environment, your portfolio’s total return may need a retrofit—away from cash equivalents or fixed income securities earning you near-zero interest rates. It may make financial sense for you to revisit your bond holdings from a different perspective. What results can you expect from the bonds you own in your retirement portfolio today? Perhaps not as much as you should—for rising rates are not a bondholder’s friend. If you are retired—or you will be soon—chances are you’re drawing a significant source of income from your bonds, many of which are paying you a fixed rate of interest. The Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Global Investment Committee (GIC)—our team of seasoned strategists—recommends that investors shift some of their holdings into floating rate investments that may help capture higher interest income, should interest rates rise. Finding better value in bonds as interest rates head higher. Fixed income investors need to be aware of the unfavorable effect rising interest rates have on bond portfolio values. As interest rates rise, bond prices fall—decreasing the value of key assets you’ve deployed for your wealth accumulation plan. While it’s important to make the most of your bond portfolio to earn meaningful interest right now, it may be appropriate for you to also focus on opportunities to boost the income you’re counting on for the future. For example, you can swap a portion of your taxable bond portfolio from fixed rate securities to floating-rate bonds, called floaters. You’d receive an interest rate, known as the coupon, that adjusts periodically against a benchmark reference rate such as LIBOR (the London Interbank Offer Rate). That way, should rates go up, the interest payments you receive would generally be higher. However, a decline in the benchmark reference rate will result in a lower interest payment. Prices on interest rate-linked floaters typically do not react as strongly to interest rate movements as comparable fixed rate securities do because the coupon adjusts in sync with rates, leading to outperfor-

mance over fixed rate securities in a rising rate environment. Defensive-minded investors also have choices for capturing improved yield. Step-up bonds provide a coupon that resets—or steps up—on a preset schedule. Although the initial coupon rate may be lower than a bond without the step-up feature, if the security isn’t called, the stepped coupon eventually increases to a level that is higher than a comparable fixed rate bond issued at the same time as the step-up. Investors who prefer to maintain positions in fixed rate securities may consider premium bonds, which are priced above par due to their coupon rate being higher than current market interest rates. In a rising-rate environment, the higher coupon provides a cushion against price declines because the net present value of the bond’s cash flow is greater than a par or discount bond. There are two sides to every scenario. Rising rates require you and your Financial Advisor to protect your assets and find opportunities for income growth. Therefore, before rates climb–as expected, lock in a lowinterest loan to manage your liabilities. Home buying is up, but jumbo mortgage rates are still low. Mortgage interest rates are very low, for now, since they are pegged to today’s relatively low Treasury rates. At the same time, home prices remain depressed, having fallen 32.6% nationally since the peak in June/July 2006. Locking in a low-rate jumbo home or refinancing loan now can have a long-lasting impact on your overall wealth strategy. Added into the outlook for a stabilizing economy, this combination of depressed prices and expected mortgage interest rate increases makes this an ideal time for clients to buy or refinance homes. The current forecasts are that mortgage rates will rise significantly this year. Many anticipate the 10-year Treasury yield will rise to 5.5%, which implies conventional rates increasing to 6.6% and jumbos rising to 7.5%. (Jumbo mortgage loans are currently those of $417,000 and higher in most of the U.S.; interest rates on jumbos are typically higher than for smaller, conventional home loans.) Matthew E. Value of Corn Distillers Grains in Finishing Diets First article in the series, “What We Do Know” Since 2004 1,051 refereed articles have been published in scientific journals regarding the feeding of corn distillers grains (DGS) in beef cattle grow-finishing diets. Generally, if the dietary inclusion of DGS is less than or equal to 20% of a diet dry matter, the DGS has been added to provide the cattle protein needs. If the dietary inclusion of DGS is more than 20% of the diet dry matter, the DGS is serving as both a protein source and an energy source, and the protein intake will exceed the cattles requirement. The majority of the research conducted suggests Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) has 110 – 115% of the feeding value of dried shelled corn and that modified wet distillers grains (45 – 60% moisture) has 120 – 125% the feeding value of shelled corn. When feeding DGS, producers should have three primary concerns about the DGS: • inconsistency in nutrient composition. • high sulfur concentrations. • percent moisture of the DGS. Nutrient composition on a percent of dry matter basis can vary from plant to plant and between loads produced by the same plant with considerable week to week variation. However, most plants are becoming much more consistent producing DGS with less variation in protein, fat and element concentrations than they did just a couple of years ago. In fact in some states, such as Illinois, several ethanol plants are very professional in documenting the quality of DGS produced. The inconsistency concern relates to inconsistent cattle performance if the nutrient composition of the DGS varies more than 5%. Sulfur concentrations in cattle diets above 0.4% of the total diet dry matter can result in sulfur toxicity symptoms and PEM (polioencephalomalacia). Generally, we have little concern regarding sulfur toxicity unless the DGS inclusion rate exceeds 40% of diet dry matter and the DGS sulfur concentration exceeds 0.90%. Moisture variability of DGS can be the cattle feeders biggest concern. Distillers grains above 60% moisture can substantially decrease dry matter intake and lower cattle performance. In addition, DGS above 60% moisture does not store well especially in warmer weather and can deteriorate rapidly. An abrupt dietary switch from 50% moisture DGS to 70% moisture DGS can throw cattle off feed and negatively affect cost of grain. In addition to these three primary concerns most cattle feeders should have three marginal concerns regarding the feeding of DGS: • increased phosphorus levels in manure. • increased incidence of fecal E coli. • increased concentrations of mycotoxins in DGS.
Several research studies have observed increased concentrations of phosphorous in the manure of cattle fed higher inclusion levels (≥ 40% of the diet dry matter) of DGS. Higher manure phosphorous concentrations can be a concern when land applying the manure especially if the soil concentration of phosphorous is high. [In Illinois for example the IEPA is considering adopting a regulation for livestock operations that must have a NPDES permit that states “Livestock waste shall not be applied to land where the Bray P1 or the Mechlich soil test for elemental phosphorous is greater than 300 lbs. per acre for the top seven inches of the soil profile. Livestock manure may only be applied to land at rates not to exceed the agronomic phosphorous demand for crops grown…”] Therefore, the more phosphorous the manure contains, the more acres required for manure application. The concern regarding the relationship between E coli concentrations in the feces from cattle fed DGS and the amount of DGS fed is not completely understood. Unpublished work at Illinois State University suggests there is no relationship between fecal E coli concentration and dietary inclusion of DGS but published data by other investigators has found a linkage. My speculation is that other environmental factors such as environmental temperature, rainfall, lot conditions, cattle stress, etc. have more effect on E coli than does dietary inclusion level of DGS. Mycotoxin concentration in DGS is of greater concern for swine and poultry diets than it is for cattle diets. Even so, cattle feeders should be cognizant of DGS mycotoxin concentrations, especially in years when weather conditions increase the likelihood of mycotoxins in shelled corn as the ethanol production process concentrates the mycotoxin level in DGS. Cattle feeders should always request a current DGS nutrient profile that includes a mycotoxin concentration analysis. The last thing I will cover in this narrative regarding my “What We Do Know List” addresses storing high moisture DGS. Research conducted at Illinois State University has successfully stored wet (40 – 60% moisture) DGS for extended periods of time (up to eight months) during warmer weather, including over the summer months with both the “vacuum method” and the “salting method”. My preferred recommendation is to store wet DGS in a bunker by sprinkling one pound of salt per one square foot of surface area on the top of the piled DGS, followed by covering the pile with a plastic tarp. This is a low cost effective method of storing wet DGS without (or with minimal) nutrient loss. My next article “Seventy Percent DGS Can Work In Finishing Diets” will continue this series.
